Chayce Beckham: ‘Bad For Me’ – Debut Album Review

Chayce Beckham releases his new debut album, Bad For Me, out now, April 5th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new project here.

Since winning the 19th season of American Idol in 2021, Chayce Beckham has been establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with in country music. On the heels of his first radio #1, “23,” the California native released his debut album, Bad For Me, out now.

Featuring thirteen new songs, nine of which he wrote or co-wrote, the album allows the introspective and unapologetic vocalist to soar. Produced by Bart Butler, the album features songs co-written by some of Nashville’s biggest names, including Brett James, Parker McCollum, Andy Albert, Natalie Hemby, Randy Montana, and more.

“Once I finished recording this album and had time to live with it, I felt the title Bad For Me fit perfectly. It sums up a lot of my own faults,” reveals Beckham in a statement. “I like a lot of stuff that’s bad for me, even though it ends up being kryptonite but that’s all a part of being human. I am so proud of this record. I just hope there’s a song on this album that makes somebody feel something.”

Accepting his vices is a common theme of the LP, as Beckham struggles with moving on from a broken relationship, drowning himself in alcohol, dealing with addiction to a toxic woman, and so much more. The album’s title track is an introspective ballad that finds him doing just that, growling through lines like “Tonight I want something bad for me that’s gonna keep me up and losing sleep” and “I want that poison in her kiss to run right through my veins.”

Likewise, the rousing “Waylon in ‘75” and the album’s opening track, “Devil I’ve Been” continue with that outlaw vibe. “Devil” is a blistering and stomping ditty that allows the singer-songwriter to show off his vocal grit. On the Brothers-Osborne-meets-Eric-Church barn burner, he’s an outlaw trying to outrun his past. “Right now I need some saving // This much I know… Trying to outrun the devil I’ve been.”

Beckham is introspective and apologetic on the stirring, “Mama,” which is a letter of apology for all of the mistakes he’s made. Written while he was competing on Idol, the penitent tune is sparse and heartfelt, as he recognizes both his mistakes and her sacrifice. “A woman shouldn’t have to carry anyone, let alone her own son…” He croons. “I’m sorry Mama, a woman shouldn’t have to do the things you’ve done.”

The 19 Recordings/Wheelhouse Records/BMG artist shows his more country-leaning side on tunes like “Everything I Need,” “Drink You Off My Mind,” “Addicted and Clean,” and “Smokin’ Weed and Drinkin’ Whiskey.” The latter is a full out honky tonk tune which finds Beckham celebrating the finer things from both his homes, California and Tennessee.

Meanwhile, “Drink You Off My Mind” pairs musical sunshine with more downtrodden lyrics in a clever juxtaposition, while “Addicted” is a mid-tempo that finds Beckham a walking contradiction, his voice softer and full of emotion as it subtly shimmies over slide guitar. “Everything” finds him celebrating the simpler things in life, celebrating that the wins are more common than the losses.

“I’m alive and I’m breathing, out here breaking more than even // I ain’t leaving, there’s no place I’d rather be // Ain’t no worry on my mind // Might even roll me one tonight, Let the smoke rise in the moonlight by the creek // And when the sun comes up, I’ll let it dawn on me, I’ve got everything I need.”

“Glitter,” “Something Worth Holding On To,” and “Whiskey Country ” each allow Beckham to show a hint of his more bluesy side, with the latter a romantic invitation for someone to join him down in Nashville. Meanwhile, “Glitter” truly shines, the lyrics painting a poetic picture of appearances being deceiving. “You can’t water silk flowers, expect them to grow or pretend it’s a diamond, when it’s a rhinestone // Yeah, we made it look perfect, like a magazine cover // Shine bright for the pictures, but not for each other // Love wasn’t real, kiss was for show, Baby it was only glitter, it was never gold.”

Pairing an incredible collection of songs with his warm soulful rasp, Bad For Me truly allows Chayce Beckham to shine in a way that’s way more than glitter… It’s gold.

Chayce Beckham Earns First Number One Single with “23”

Chayce Beckham earns his first number one single at country radio with his song, “23.” Learn all the details here and listen to the song below!

American Idol favorite and one of country’s music rising stars, Chayce Beckham has had quite the career so far. From the moment he started releasing music, the singer-songwriter resonated with his fanbase. His debut single to country radio, “23” was a fan-favorite from the get-go, and now the single marks Beckham’s first number one of his career.

This moment is even more special for Beckham because “23” is an autobiographical song that he self-penned about his struggles and his life. Adding to the feat, “23” becomes the first number one song that was solely-written by the artist who also recorded it since Taylor Swift’s “Ours” in 2012. The hit song precedes the singer’s debut album, Bad For Me, which is slated for release this Friday, April 5th.

“Well, I went to California and I had me a band // And we played in all the bars in all the southern lands // We played all night, and we drank for free // All of my boys and me // Now I’m 23 and there ain’t nobody who can drink like me // Soon I’ll be 24 and the Lord knows that I can’t drink no more // I know I shoulda taken it slow // It’s not the way that my life goes // Now I know”

Chayce Beckham Shares Brand New Track “Till The Day I Die”

Chayce Beckham’s new song “Till The Day I Die” is out now, April 28th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

One of country music’s favorite American Idols is back with brand new music. Chayce Beckham has a new track to add to his growing catalog of songs. His new song “Till The Day I Die” cements his staying power, as he firmly plants his boots in country music.

The new bluesy track is a true love letter to country music and the country bringing. Throughout the verses, Beckham shares about his experiences growing up and being a bit rough-around-the-edges. Referred to as a “whiskey-soaked prayer,” “Till The Day I Die” is a true depiction of Beckham’s vocal abilities and songwriting prowess.

“I guess mama let me grow up to be a cowboy // She couldn’t shape me up no matter how hard she tried // and the good lord gave me a crazy side when he made me // So he’ll let it slide if I let a little out tonight // because if whiskey’s only on this side of heaven // and they don’t play outlaw songs up in the sky // I’m going to raise a glass to this cowboy life I’m living // and I’m going to keep on raising hell till the day I die”

Beckham continues to be as authentic as they come. Each and every release showcases exactly why he deserves to be an artist in country music. “Till The Day I Die” is an honest and vulnerable new track that truly ups the caliber.

Who Is Chayce Beckham? The Story Behind His Journey to Country Music

Who is Chayce Beckham? The singer-songwriter joined us to chat about his journey to country music. Get to know the rising star here…

Quick Facts:

Full Name – Chayce Beckham
Hometown – Apple Valley, California
Current City – Nashville, Tennesee
Musical Influences – Johnny Cash, Sublime, Tim McGraw, George Jones
Label – 19 Recordings/BBR Music Group
Current Single – “Keeping Me Up All Night” (*as of date of article: 10/17/22)

The Beginning:

After many requests from fans, we are finally spotlighting Chayce Beckham’s story. While he rose to fame on American Idol, Beckham’s journey began long before his coveted win. Learn more about his rise here.

The singer-songwriter grew up in the high desert of southern California; however, his family’s roots are in Oklahoma. “We moved to California because my grandfather was working jobs in California at a construction company and we all kind of followed him out here,” shared Beckham. “I used to stay home with my grandma and she had a couple of acres […] She was very old school and she liked to sing and listen to old bluegrass.”

Beckham recalls being immersed in music from an early age, listening to the likes of country artists like George Jones and Johnny Cash with his grandmother. “I got my first guitar when I was three years old,” began the singer, “That kind of got me started on playing music. I played guitar for as long as I can remember. However, I didn’t start singing until I was older. I always wanted to, but I didn’t have control of my voice when I was young.”

In high school, Beckham started to branch out, listening to all sorts of different genres. “I wanted to be a rapper. […] Then I wanted to be in a rock and roll band and that led to wanting to be in a reggae band,” recalls the singer. “There was so much music available for me. I was exposed to so much, especially different cultures, different music, and different lifestyles, and I think I kind of struggled because I moved around so much when I was a kid to really like identify with something. I played around with a lot of different stuff.

The Turning Point:

Despite getting into music at an early age and gigging with his friends in bands, Beckham still did not know what kind of music was calling him. “I kind of always had this drive in me to do music. I wanted to be known for my music,” adding, “I knew I wanted to make people feel better with music hopefully.”

When his band of high school friends fell apart in 2020, Beckham found himself feeling lost musically. “I started singing songs just acoustically on my guitar […] I was posting videos of Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan covers […] People were liking it and commenting on it.”

Soon thereafter, life started to throw Beckham some curve balls. He found himself getting a DUI after playing a show in Huntington with his band. His band and his relationship both ended, and he was forced to move back home with his parents. Two weeks later his parents signed him up for American Idol.

“My parents signed me up for American Idol and was accepted to do the judges audition and I didn’t want to go,” shared the singer. With some pushing from his parents, Beckham agreed to go. “They gave me three yes’s and I walked out of there as someone who had done everything wrong and had nothing left and having no hope at all to someone who had all the hope in the world and my imagination was lit on fire.”

Beckham credits American Idol for helping him turn his life around and giving him the platform he always dreamed of. The timing was perfect, even though it did not feel like it at first. “I got to go to this fast-track of music college,” shared a grateful Beckham.

Today:

Flash forward to today, Beckham is finally getting his chance in the genre he always loved. “When I was a kid, I was more sheltered to country music, and life as it got older, life started doing what it does to people, hitting road bumps, you kind of fall back to country music or just the music that made you feel good, which for me is the music that I felt good as a kid,” shared the singer adding later, “I think I found myself in the songs that I sing now.”

While his breakout song, “23” was the story of his past, his current songs reflect where he is now. With a debut EP under his belt, Doin’ It Right and a brand new single, “Keeping Me Up All Night,” Beckham’s dreams are officially coming true.

The single is romantic and heartwarming. “Keeping Me Up All Night” is all about that right kind of love. Beckham has fans swooning, as he reflects on what it is like being with the person that still keeps you up all night.

The singer-songwriter shared that more new music is coming sooner rather than later. There is even talks of an album. Until then, make sure to keep your eyes and ears on Beckham. This is only the beginning!

Chayce Beckham continues to broaden his fanbase, after being crowned the season 21 winner of American Idol. Between performing with Luke Combs and dropping a song with Lindsay Ell, Beckham is the real deal. Today, the entertainer shares a brand new song with fans called “Tell Me Twice.”

The new song is a 4-minute life lesson for all of us. Beckham shares all he has learned so far in life, crediting his work ethic and just “living life” for helping him get to where he is now. The song has a way of igniting nostalgia and motivation in the listener. In his young career, Beckham has yet to shy away from singing his truth in his music, something we have grown to love and appreciate about the rising artist.

“Learned the value of the dollar // ‘Cause I had to work for it // Rolled my windows up // When the rain is pouring down // But from where I’m sitting now // I’ve learned a hell of a lot from taking good advice // But a whole lot more from living life // You don’t have to tell me twice”

Beckham proves with “Tell Me Twice” that he deserved a spot on our 2022 Artists to Watch list. Click here to learn what other artists made our coveted list.

We are interested to see how Beckham’s career will continue to evolve. It is only just the beginning. Congrats to Chayce on his American Idol win!
