Jimmie Allen and Brad Paisley’s collaborative song, “Freedom Was A Highway” is officially the number one song at country radio. Learn more below.
Just fresh off the announcement that he will be co-hosting the 57th ACM Awards, Jimmie Allen can celebrate yet again! The rising star achieved his third number-one single at country radio this week with his Brad Paisley collaboration! “Freedom Was A Highway” is officially number one.
“Freedom Was A Highway” is a nostalgic tune where Allen and Paisley reminisce about more carefree days. The collaboration is one of many off of Allen’s project Bettie James. Both artists are huge fans of one another, which is one of the many reasons that makes this collaboration so special!
“When the town was the whole world // And love was the girl next door // Soundtrack was a song in the dark // I miss those days when our dreams // Were there for chasin’ // But time was better wasted // We were summer young and livin’ for a Friday // And freedom was a highway (oh-oh, oh-oh) // Freedom was a highway (oh-oh, oh-oh)”
We love a collaboration and are so happy to see this song succeed. Congrats to Allen and Paisley and their teams!

All of the greats we know and love today were once the opening acts, too. Get to know today’s openers from summer 2021’s hottest country music tours.
Not only did your favorite superstars reunite with the stage this past summer, but your future favorite entertainers had the opportunity to share it with them this country concert season as well. Country music is famous for having incredible ‘superstars-to-be’ open for their major tours, and here at Country Swag, we have your guide to all the of the show openers. Learn more about this year’s opening acts below.
Tenille Arts just earned her first #1 on country radio with the smash “Somebody Like That”, following the release of her second studio album, Love, Heartbreak & Everything In Between. All her hard work is paying off this year, as she gears up for new releases and as summer set in, Arts found herself as the opening act on on Lady A’s ‘What A Song Can Do Tour’. Tenille Arts is without a doubt one of the best vocalists and songwriters of this new class of country artists and if you caught the show, you will probably agree.
Matt Stell, one of our artists to watch and Live Swag Session alums is taking over country music one single at a time. His debut single, “Prayed For You” is one of the most popular love songs in country music, and his new single, “That Ain’t Me No More” has been sent to country radio. This summer, he joined Old Dominion and Miranda Lambert on their respective run of shows.
Lainey Wilson and HARDY were both opening acts for Jason Aldean’s ‘Back In The Saddle Tour’ and if you caught the show, you know they rightfully earned their time in the spotlight. This isn’t the first time the two have toured together either; they opened for Morgan Wallen on his first headline tour over two years ago. HARDY and Wilson both released critically acclaimed albums in the past year (A ROCK and Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’, respectively) and as those albums indicated, their fiery songs got fans up and out of their seats each and every night just as fast as they sat down in them!
The full list of country tours and their opening acts are listed below. One of the best feelings is when you go to a show not knowing the opener and leaving a forever fan. If that rings true for the show’s you attended this year, be sure to remember their names, follow them on socials, stream the music and get ready to see those artists when they head back your way. For New York City country fans, head to our calendar to find out when the next shows in the area are.

Brad Paisley’s new song, “Off Road” is available now, February 10th, on all streaming platforms. Written by Paisley with Lee Thomas Miller, and Ross Copperman, take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the track.
With the release of “Off Road”, a beautiful and simple song that admires and celebrates a strong, independent, and trailblazing woman, Paisley works to connect with fans as he continuously releases new music throughout the last year. “Off Road” follows Paisley’s most recent single “No I in Beer”, a song about the unity of the nation at the beginning of the pandemic that also honors those who continue to sacrifice in order to get us through it. Additionally, Paisley also collaborated with Jimmie Allen for their song “Freedom Was A Highway”, which hit Country Radio just last week and is part of Allen’s collaboration project: Bettie James, released back in July.
“Off Road” is a song where the man stands beside the woman and witnesses and admires the confidence, strength, and success that she exudes all on her own. She is highlighted from the very start of the song as Paisley sings “Well here she is, meet the star of this song…”.
The song paints a picture of the two both physically leaving their past in Tennessee and headed for a future in California, but also metaphorically headed for bigger and better things. There’s no mountain she can’t climb; anything she desires is within her reach. There is just no telling what she can accomplish. She is in control in the driver’s seat and he is just along for the ride.
“She didn’t move out here to fail / She’s gonna blaze a brand new trail / Where anybody else might stop, when they run out of blacktop ”
It is clear that she is not one to follow the status quo or “stay in her lane” and she’s not going to make any choices or decisions based on the notion that someone or society says she should.
“she’s a little off road, gravel dust on her halo / I think you oughta know, if you wanna ride along (you better hang on) / Where she’s going ain’t paved / No her way ain’t the highway / And she ain’t gonna stay in her lane, cause she’s a little off road ”

Jimmie Allen’s unique sound combined with Paisley’s signature guitar playing make for a remarkable new single, “Freedom Was A Highway”, set to hit country radio on February 1st.
“Freedom Was A Highway” was first released on Allen’s record Bettie James, named after his late grandmother and late father, where he collaborates with superstars of various genres and generations including Darius Rucker, Charlie Pride, Tim McGraw, Mickey Guyton, Nelly, Noah Cyrus, Tauren Wells, Rita Wilson, and The Oakridge Boys. Since its release in July 2020, Bettie James has received more than 118 million streams.
“Freedom Was A Highway” is a nostalgic, windows-down tune where Allen and Paisley reminisce about younger, carefree days. It was written by Allen, Ash Bowers, and Matt Rogers and Paisley adds vocals and a signature guitar solo.
When the town was the whole world / And love was the girl next door / soundtrack was a song in the dark / I miss those days when our dreams were there for chasing / But time was better wasted / We were summer young and livin’ for a Friday/ And freedom was a highway
While writing this song with his co-writers, Allen says he imagined himself driving down his favorite roads back in Delaware. He says, in a press release, “This song takes me back to simpler moments such as an innocent, childhood crush on the next-door neighbor or feeling freedom in the wind as you drive with the windows down.”
On dueting with Paisley, he shares, “I’m a huge admirer of Brad Paisley. I love what he brings to music and I had to have him bring that same magic to this song. I’m humbled to have him join me on this song – he brought the Freedom to the Highway.”
Jimmie Allen and Brad Paisley’s “Freedom Was A Highway” Impacts Country Radio February 1st
Regarding joining Allen on the song, Paisley shared, “I’m a fan of Jimmie, not only as a musician but also as a person, and I was honored when he asked me to join him on the song. It’s a magical combination – it doesn’t sound like a typical record for me at all and when I come in, I try my best not to ruin Jimmie’s song.” In regards to his role in the song, Paisley says that “I use my guitar to make a record sort of sound like I’m on it even before you hear me sing, and I love this guitar solo. I’m really proud to be a part of ‘Freedom Was A Highway’ and I’m excited for people to hear it.’”
When you’re seventeen and driving / you don’t think about the road running out / no, no, no, no / you just keep your eyes on that horizon / because you’re wrapped in now
Allen has already made history as the first Black artist to launch a career with two consecutive No. 1 hits on Country radio – the first being his debut single “Best Shot” – which claimed the No. 1 spot for three weeks – and second being his latest solo single “Make Me Want To”. While Bettie James was a special album for Allen because it paid tribute to his late family members and so many influential artists, “Why Things Happen” with Darius Rucker and Charley Pride was an especially impactful moment of his career as Allen was able to bring together three generations of Black country artists and share a song with the two artists who helped pave the way for him in country music. Allen is beyond grateful that he was able to have a friendship and this song with Pride before he passed and that he was able to properly thank him for breaking the barriers that allowed for his presence and success in country music.
On July 13, 2021, Allen will publish his debut picture book, My Voice Is a Trumpet, a powerful story about speaking up for what you believe in, at any age. For more information, visit www.jimmieallenmusic.com.

With the exception of a few remixes and covers, fans of Jimmie Allen have not been given new music since his 2018 debut album Mercury Lane. Still, the “Best Shot” singer has maintained his spot in country music and has developed a devoted community through social media. With his growing fanbase, Bettie James is here to reintroduce Allen in a way that could not have been more anticipated, in the very best way: with a collaborative project.
With six, out of seven, unreleased tracks with entertainers such as Nelly, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, and more, Bettie James works as a mesh of creatively diverse tracks. There are feel-good, powerhouse songs, estranged love ballads, inspirational messages laid over music, and reflective lyrics that contemplate tragedy and, in another production, potential growth.
Bettie James was undoubtedly worth the wait, not only for Allen’s listeners but for country music as a whole. It showcases a grown, matured, and versatile artist who is capable of honesty and vulnerability as well as performing those country music classics that get people moving and grooving. Not only does it provide Allen with a chance to redefine himself in a multifaceted, cross-genre way, but the well-known contributors are able to play with their preferred style of music, too. For instance, “Made for These” practically demands Tim McGraw’s involvement since it walks the same line as McGraw’s 2004 hit, “Live Like You Were Dying”. Additionally, “Freedom Was A Highway” aligns with Brad Paisley’s high-esteemed inclinations to incorporate a dense, electric riff.
Further exploring a mix of genre-bending music from top to bottom, the album kicks off with the infectious and fan-favorite “Good Times Roll” featuring Nelly and ends with the final and seventh track, “This Is Us” featuring Noah Cyrus. Fans got a bit of an early taste for each of these two tracks. While the latter was released on its own in February, Allen also began including a sneak peek of “Good Times Roll” in his live show as early as December 2019. Check out the video below for a clip of the live performance.
Although, Bettie James in its entirety is a true gift, there are two notable pieces, and it would be a great disservice if “Drunk & I Miss You” and “Why Things Happen” were not specifically given the words, and the space, to officially discuss and acclaim. The former is with Mickey Guyton and the melody practically sends the listener into a dizzying mental state, as if a camera is rotating 360° around an object to cause chaos and confusion. It only adds to the anguish and desperation of the song, though the mixed feelings of honesty battled with alcohol-induced longing creates a conflicted, muddled mental state that allows the track to be what it is. And, it’s great.
“Why Things Happen”, with Charley Pride and Darius Rucker, takes on a more serious route with the lyrics searching for answers as to, well, why things happen as they do. It’s political, without having to get political. And, it’s an emotional, thought-provoking production that tugs at the heart-strings. With Rucker’s natural tremble in his voice and Pride’s established, rough yet muted tone intertwining with each other and echoing Allen, a full-blast exploratory creation is born that leaves us wanting more.
Bettie James is an epiphanic, significant and well-built project from Allen that takes you on a whirlwind of emotions in seven tracks, leaving you dazed and confused, in the very best way.

“We’re all in this together and there’s always next year / I’m liking all this team effort
There ain’t no I in BEER”
Grab a drink and virtual cheers your buddies because Brad Paisley has just released an anthem for these quarantine times. “No I In Beer” is the perfect song to celebrate how the world has united against COVID-19 and how we can all appreciate the little victories and our essential frontline workers.
“We’re all in this together / to me it’s all so clear drinking oughta be a team effort / there is no I in beer”
Laced with epic guitar licks and Paisley’s cheeky delivery, the track written by Brad Paisley and Kelley Lovelace, will for sure be one of the bright spots of this time and a reminder that we all came through it stronger. “No I In Beer” will definitely be a staple in Paisley’s live shows and we look forward to hearing it and raising a beer with fellow concert-goers.
He closes the song by gratefully shouting out to the first responders, farmers, and nurses for all that they have done during this pandemic, offering to take a break and he’ll buy them a beer.

Hitmaker Brad Paisley released his variety show on ABC called Brad Paisley Thinks He’s Special on Tuesday, December 3rd. The show features an array of celebrities as well as Paisley’s infamous humor! Along with the premiere of this show, the singer released a powerful duet, “Alive Right Now”, along with Cancer Survivor Addie Pratt, as a way for him to use his platform to do good for the world.
With a contemporary spin, this song celebrates the joys of living life to the fullest. The song opens playfully, with clever lyrics that allude to current cultural references.
“It’s, “Hey Siri, who sings this song?” (Brad Paisley) / It’s a selfie with your best friend and a beer / It’s a hashtag Friday feelin’”
Paisley references selfies and hashtags, to help convey the message that it’s the small and simple joys in life that make it worth living, right now. In the catchy and uplifting chorus, Paisley celebrates life further as he belts:
“It’s great to be alive right now / By the grace of God somehow / Yeah, girl, this is our time / I’m glad that I’m alive right now”
The lyrics are simple, yet very sentimental as they make one reflect and feel grateful for all the beautiful things in life. The most touching moments of the song occur during the final chorus and bridge when Paisley is joined by powerhouse Addie Pratt. Pratt is a St. Jude Children’s Hospital cancer survivor, who’s incredible vocals both inspired Paisley and took him by surprise! Paisley initially invited Addie to perform this song with him on his ABC variety show. The performance was so impactful that Paisley invited her to join him on the studio recording.
Pratt joins with her vocals, starting softly and slowly building into strong notes and harmonies. This duet is a magical moment and makes the song extra special.
After this stunning performance, we’re excited to see what happens with Pratt’s well-deserved singing career!

As we hang on to the last bit of summer, Friday evening (Aug 30.) New Yorkers headed out to Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater to kick off Labor Day weekend. Headliner, Brad Paisley brought his 2019 World Tour to the waterfront venue, featuring special guests Chris Lane and Riley Green. Check out highlights from the show on our Instagram story here.
Just as the sun was beginning to set, one of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Riley Green took to the stage. The rising artist exploded on to the stage with songs like “Bettin’ Man,” “In Love By Now,” and “Get That Man A Beer,” both upbeat tunes. Green took some time to show off his vocals and softer side, singing his next radio single “I Wish Grandpas Never Died”. The singer-songwriter explained “If ya’ll don’t mind, I’m going to play ya’ll a brand new song that I just had written. It’s one of my favorite songs that I ever wrote,” adding that the song would be his next single on country radio, and a track on his forthcoming debut album, Different ‘Round Here.
It was clear the audience did not mind as all, as fans both sang the words back to Green and nodded and danced in approval as they listened to his breathtaking vocals. He ended his enticing set with his first number one single, “There Was This Girl,” leaving fans wanting even more music from the talented singer. Check out our Live Swag Session with Riley Green below from last Fall where he performed and chatted with us months before getting that number one.
Approximately ten minutes later, entertainer, Chris Lane brought his high-energy set to the amphitheater, even mentioning that the venue was one of his favorites to perform at. Before he even took the stage, the stage lit up with colorful lights and eclectic music blared from the speakers. It was obvious that Lane was about to leave his heart and soul on the stage, keeping everyone entertained.
The country crooner made sure to sing fan-favorites including “Fix,” “I Don’t Know About You,” and “For Her.” The entire crowd showed their approval, singing along throughout his set. One of the highlights was when Lane introduced his newest song “Big, Big Plans,” the song he just so happened to use to propose to his now fiancé Lauren Bushnell last month. Lane humbly told the audience “Thankfully, she said yes.”
As always, the singer-songwriter made sure to bring his ’90s country flair to his performance, singing a medley of some popular country songs. Lane borrowed an American cowboy hat from a fan in the audience to get into character. The charming mash-up included “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” “Boot Scootin Boogie,” “Check Yes or No,” among some other popular ’90s tunes. Lane ended his impressive set with “Take Back Home Girl,” which he sang as he ventured through the sea of fans in the audience as he made his away around the venue.
We first caught up with Chris Lane nearly two years ago when he played Long Island’s Stereo Garden. Check out the interview below where he chats about hitting the road, music, and more.
Green and Lane definitely did their jobs, as fans were eager to hear from the headliner, Brad Paisley. Paisley not only brought his unique swagger and strong vocals to the stage, but his theatrics and background images were unparalleled, only adding to the whole ambiance of his almost two hour set.
The seasoned musician sang a mix of some of his greatest hits, new songs, crowd-favorites, and everything in between. His set began with the electrifying “Beat This Summer,” following it up with “Ticks,” “The World,” and “Perfect Storm.” Although Paisley delivered every song with conviction, one of our favorite moments of the night was when he sang a mash-up of his romantic ballads, “Then” and “Waitin’ On a Woman.” The singer-songwriter mesmerized each and every fan with the love songs. Later on in the set, Paisley showed his vulnerability yet again, singing “She’s Everything,” while the camera cut to real-time clips of adorable couples in the audience, catching them on the ‘kiss cam.’
Photo Courtesy of @bradpaisley on Instagram
Lane and Green joined Paisley back on stage, during the middle of his set to sing both Hank Williams Jr.’s “A Country Boy Can Survive” and “I’m Still a Guy.” Each vocalist sang a verse of the song, but it was the banter between the singers that really made the performance. Paisley poked fun at Lane’s style, laughing saying, “you have more bling around your ankles than I own,” and even stopped to take a selfie with fans. All joking aside, Paisley shared, “I’m the luckiest guy in the world to have these guys out. Chris Lane! Riley Green everybody!”
Paisley kept up the energy, singing both “This Is Country Music” and “American Saturday Night.” During the later, he made sure to thank the troops for serving our country and even brought four soldiers out on stage to honor them, encouraging fans to cheer and applaud. Concertgoers obliged, giving the soldiers a standing ovation and starting a ‘USA’ chant, making for another iconic moment of the night. [Shop here for your ‘USA! Chant’ gear.]

Paying homage to 90s country, Paisley made sure to gives fans his rendition of Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee”, but it was his cover of Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher,” that surprised excited fans. Paisley ended his set, singing arguably some of his most popular songs, including “I’m Gonna Miss Her,” “Mud on the Tires,” and “Today.”
Of course, Paisley came back to the stage for an encore song, singing his Grammy nominated track, “Alcohol,” with Lane and Green. The trio’s performance was the perfect cap to a great night of country music.
This weekend wrapped up this leg of the incredible tour; however, Paisley will head to Europe for a string of shows in October. For tickets and more information head to bradpaisley.com.

From scoring his very first number one hit earlier this year with “There Was This Girl” to making waves with his newest release “I Wish Grandpas Never Died,” Green is paving his own path towards superstardom. With his debut album Different ‘Round Here slated for release next month, September 20th and a headlining tour of his own beginning this fall, here are five reasons why you should be sure to head into the venue early to catch his opening set.
1. He Has A Song For Every Emotion
Whether you’re in the mood to jam out or in the mood to cry, Green has you covered with everything in between. Songs like “There Was This Girl” and “In Love By Now” will have you up and dancing, while “I Wish Grandpas Never Died” might get you emotional. “Bettin’ Man” and “Same Old Song” will definitely have you swaying back and forth, focusing on Green’s guitar skills and incredible vocals.
2. For The Ladies… He’s Handsome
Not only is Green extremely talented, but he was also blessed with good looks too. For us ladies who love a man with a beard, he is the guy for you.
3. He Flawlessly Blends Traditional and Modern Country Music
Green was raised in Jacksonville, Alabama on old traditional country, bluegrass and southern gospel music. Growing up, he spent his childhood songwriting and performing for his grandfather, who ran Golden Saw Music Hall. Green shared the stage with his grandfather, Bufford Green and other influential men of his time. As he grew older, he put his own mixture of modern rebellion into his original music.
4. You Will See Him Live Before He Releases His Debut Album
The Jacksonville, Alabama native will be releasing his debut album Different ‘Round Here on September 20th. Green co-wrote each of the fourteen tracks with some of Nashville’s greatest songwriters including Jessi Alexander, Erik Dylan, Justin Weaver and more. He also recorded the project alongside CMA and ACM award-winning producer Dann Huff and executive producer Jimmy Harnen. You will get to hear and know most of the songs on the LP before it’s release.
5. You Can Say You Knew Him When
For followers of NYCountry Swag, you knew about the singer-songwriter back when we hosted a Swag Session with him last Fall. We sat down with Green at The Boogie Room in October 2018 while he performed two songs for us and spoke about his experience as a country music artist up until that point. Watch the Swag Session above.
