NYCS First Impression: Cassadee Pope ‘Rise and Shine’

Rise and Shine Cassadee Pope

As fast as it started, summer is slowly winding down. Soon enough, the days will get shorter and the weather colder. Today, August 6th, Cassadee Pope released her third studio album, the acoustic Rise and Shine and it’s the perfect soundtrack to transition you into fall. It’s warm, nostalgic, and exciting. There’s a song for every season and feeling.

The first track, “Let Me Go”, and the final, “Built This House”, were the first of the eight to be released. “Let Me Go,” tells the story of a relationship that has run it’s course, while “Built This House” is more of a reflection of once you’re on the other side of the breakup. “Counting on the Weather”, written by the artist along with Bobby Huff, and Blair Daly is the most classic Pope, rhythmically and lyrically. It’s incredibly distinct, and it sounds like it was made for a late Indian Summer night.

A project like this is a reminder of why Pope won NBC’s The Voice all those years ago. Not only is she a true artist with a vision, but she has one of the most spectacular and versatile voices in all of country music. This is showcased on the entire album, but especially on moments like “Hangover” and “Hoodie”. Both are early-2000s sounding and reminiscent of her alternative roots.

“Rise and Shine is a collection of songs that talk about where I’ve been and where I’m headed,” says Pope in a statement. “I wanted people to hear these in their purest form so I went with a more stripped back sound that really lets the lyrics stand out. My hope is that these songs help aid people into feeling every emotion they need to let out.”

The standout on the record is “California Dreaming”, which she sings with boyfriend and fellow singer-songwriter/actor Sam Palladio. It starts with a gorgeous, pensive guitar and builds as soon as Pope’s voice comes in. When Palladio joins her at the chorus, they soar together, and it is bound to give you goosebumps. It’s nostalgic and really thoughtful. “I’ve been flying and crying, trying to leave you where I’ve been/But the cracks in my heart always let you back in/Keep trying to lose you in the Hollywood Hills/but I’m California dreaming still”, they sing on the chorus. The guitar is melodic but doesn’t overpower their vocals. It sounds like it could be straight off the show Nashville, while still sounding retro.

The title track, “Rise and Shine” is soothing in every way; it’s perfect for the times we’re living in now. Written by Pope, Danny Orton, Matt Scannell is the beautifully serene song about getting up every morning and choosing to fight for yourself and your worth. It sounds like waking up early in the morning and seeing the sunshine through the blinds.

Modern country music has become more produced over the years, so it’s refreshing to see an artist as successful as Cassadee Pope step back and let the lyrics and her voice do the talking. Right now what we need most is music and art to transport us, and this album does that successfully. As Cassadee sings, “you know it’s always darkest before the dawn, so rise and shine”.

Lauren Alaina Explores Ambitious Moments In “Run”

Lauren Alaina Run

With a current single “Getting Good”, that peaked at #5 on Billboard’s Country Digital Song Sales in October and came to life with singer-songwriter Emily Weisband and producer David Garcia, as well as a current EP that was released in March, Lauren Alaina is back with more. A new track titled “Run” has been introduced to begin the next phase of music and her upcoming EP Getting Over Him is due out Labor Day weekend.

“Run” is meant to explore those non-stop, ambitious moments that often take control over the decisions we make in order to get to where we want to go. “We are all running. Constantly. Non-Stop. Even in this quarantine, we are all still the busiest we’ve ever been. Life just keeps going and going and going in unbelievable paces as we try to race ourselves to the next thing,” Alaina explains in a statement. “My idea with the song was to refer to examples of all things that run because no matter what your walk of life is, we are all racing to the next thing. We are all trying to get where we are going. We all get our hearts broken. We all have these childhood dreams. We ‘run’ to make it all happen.”

“Run, living life like it’s a highway and we’re all stuck in drive / Like a preacher on a Sunday, always going overtime / Like the muddy water rushing, in the river outside of town / Yeah, the clock just keeps on running and we can’t slow down / No matter where we’re going / No matter where we’re from / Oh-oh, oh-oh / We’re all born to run”

Though fans of this Georgia native, who has become one of the most established and admired upcoming female country artists, have not been given a full-length album since 2017, Alaina has not been quiet. There have been consistent releases of singles and EP’s while taking part in a variety of different collaborations such as Kane Brown’s #1 and 5x Platinum hit “What Ifs” and Chris Young’s 2019 “Town Ain’t Big Enough”.

This steady activity through diverse projects, in addition to her own, is a testament to how devoted Alaina is to music. And to where she wants to go next. “Run”, written by Ben Johnson, Kennedi Lyyken, and the artist herself is a journal entry with instrumental components that shamelessly declares the desire for more, and the tendency to keep on running.

To keep up with Lauren Alaina, follow her on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.

“Run” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

NYCS First Impression: ‘Chris Tomlin & Friends’ Collaboration Album

Chris Tomlin & Friends

Faith, religion, and God have always had a place in country music. Now, Grammy-award-winning Christian music singer-songwriter, Chris Tomlin has taken this theme to the next level with his Christian/country collaboration album titled Chris Tomlin and Friends that dropped last Friday (July 31). Some of the biggest names in country music are featured on this record, including Florida Georgia Line, Thomas Rhett, Lady A, Brett Young, Chris Lane, Cassadee Pope, RaeLynn, and Russell Dickerson, as well as some of the biggest songwriters, including Ashley Gorley, Corey Crowder, Dan + Shay’s Shay Mooney and much more.

Tomlin’s thirteenth studio album was executively produced by Florida Georgia Line and Crowder. This project came about when Tomlin and Tyler Hubbard met in a Florida gym on vacation. Both confessed that they were huge fans of each other and decided there to write some songs together in the future. On the record, Tomlin co-wrote nine of the thirteen songs while Hubbard and Crowder have co-wrote six songs each.

“This is a very meaningful project for us,” Hubbard shared in a press release. “BK and I both grew up leading worship in church, singing several of Chris’ songs throughout the years. He’s been a huge inspiration to us, and to have this full circle opportunity to collaborate with him on this album is a true blessing.”

Aside from writing, Hubbard and Brian Kelley feature their vocals on three songs, including “Forever Home,” “Sing,” with Russell Dickerson, and the lead track “Thank You, Lord” featuring Thomas Rhett. “Forever Home” is the most country sounding track on the record. The ‘forever home’ they sing about is a metaphor for heaven. “When we get to our forever home / Me and you will be forever home.” In “Thank You, Lord,” Tomlin, Rhett and Florida Georgia Line express all they have to be thankful for in upbeat fashion, including their mothers, friends, wives, kids, and more. Rhett is also featured “God Who Listens,” which touches on the power of prayer. Tomlin and Rhett collaborated on Rhett’s COVID-inspired hit song, “Be A Light” that was released in March.

Grammy-award-winning country group, Lady A will get their first taste of Christian radio with “Who You Are To Me,” as this will be Tomlin’s next single to the charts. Some people think the Lord is just the protagonist of some fables, but in this song, Tomlin, Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott, and David Haywood explain that God can be a part of everything you do. “Your mercy, Your goodness / Lord, You’re the air that I breathe / That’s who You are to me.” The track currently sits at number 24 and was the most added song to Christian radio the week of August 1st. “Gifts From God,” featuring Chris Lane has a similar message – Every day is a gift from God and if you look around, you’ll see He is always around you, not just the hour you spend with Him in church on Sunday.

“Chase Me Down,” featuring RaeLynn, and “Together,” featuring Dickerson reminds us that even in the worst of times, God is always there for us, even when we’re “knee deep in sin.” In “Be The Moon,” Brett Young and Cassadee Pope harmonize with Tomlin to create a beautiful ballad about how we, like the moon does with the sun, can use Christianity to reflect the light of God onto others.

Other non-country collaborations include “Reaching for You,” with We The Kingdom, “Power,” with NEEDTOBREATHE’s Bear Rineheart, and the album’s closer, “Tin Roof,” featuring Blessing Offor.

“Everyone brought their own unique experiences and talents to the table and it’s what made the songs and their message so relatable and powerful,” Tomlin shared. “For me, this record is a step towards breaking down the walls of the Christian genre and allowing the music to be accessible to a wider audience. That’s my understanding of the Gospel. Music about faith, God, salvation and forgiveness doesn’t only have to come from the Christian genre.”

23 Dove Awards and nine number one songs on the Christian Airplay charts wasn’t satisfying enough for the Nashville-based, Texas native. Growing up as a kid, Tomlin wanted to do one of two things: play professional baseball or sing country music. While it would tough for the 48-year old to make an MLB roster, it wasn’t too late to record a country record. The awards and the number-one hits show Tomlin clearly has a lot of talent as a musician, but this album truly put his exceptionality and versatility on full display.

Eric Church’s Ode To Strong Females, “Bad Mother Trucker”

Eric Church Bad Mother Trucker

Eric Church is known for his deep, rock ‘n roll style lyrics that either make you want to scream the song at the top of your lungs or curl into a ball and contemplate life. “Bad Mother Trucker” fits into the former category and tells the story of a woman truck driver who outworks, outdrives, and outraces her male counterparts.

“She drove an ’81 Peterbilt 18-wheeler // Jet black with pink mud flaps // It was a mean piece of metal with lightning in the pedal // Thunder comin’ out the back // And them boys would chuckle when they saw her buckle // Herself in the captain’s seat // But nobody was laughin’ when she’d go to passin’ // Smilin’ at them real sweet”

There seems to be a deeper meaning to the story of the song though: women are just as capable as men as getting the job done. Joanna Cotten’s soulful background vocals are the perfect counterpart to the raspy and rock-edge of Church’s in a similar way to “Mistress Named Music.” The singer-songwriter wrote the song with Casey Beathard, Luke Dick, and Jeremy Spillman. The song is a classic Church song with a catchy chorus and way of making you really think about the lyrics and backstory behind them.

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Josh Melton

Josh Melton

Our Swag Spotlight this week, Josh Melton is eager to make a name for himself in the country music scene. He may have gotten a late start to music, but he makes up for it with raw talent, charisma, and of course the ability and desire to soak it all in. We chatted with the rising artist about where he has been, where he is now, and where he is headed.

Growing up in Ohio, Melton was a preacher’s kid, which came with a unique set of values. “We weren’t allowed to listen to secular music,” he shared, “It sounds a little crazy talking about it now, but I barely ever listened to music growing up all.” Other than singing in his church choir, Melton focus was on anything but music. He often found himself participating in extreme sports like snowboarding and skateboarding, adding, “I grew up without music honestly and that’s kinda crazy.”

The singer-songwriter found music later in life when a buddy of his asked him to help with a Karaoke bar every Thursday on an island in Ohio called Put-in-Bay. “When people weren’t singing, he was like “Josh you got to sing something”,” he recalls, adding later that the only thing he really knew was Frank Sinatra. Melton continued to find his voice working with his friend and hearing other people sing more modern songs. He slowly started recognizing his affinity for country music.

“The more current stuff- I just started falling in love with that kind of music. A lot of my friends growing up had country on, so I just think it was an evolution of me just like being around it.” Melton relates to the message that county music often portrays, feeling a connection to subjects in songs, such as church and good people. This revelation convinced the singer to move to Nashville, unsure of exactly what he wanted to pursue.

“When I moved to Nashville, I didn’t know what I really wanted to do,” he shared, “All I wanted to do was sing.” He landed gigs on Broadway, singing cover songs at popular bars, “For a while there, I spun my wheels on Broadway because I thought that was making it.” He shared that he only knew ten cover songs at the time, so he ended up learning over a hundred cover songs in one summer by renting a storage unit from a friend and practicing stage presence and guitar, playing songs in the mirror.

Flash forward to today, Melton has found value in listening to more modern singers. “I love Thomas Rhett’s character and how he involves his family in his career,” he shared with us, also adding, “I love Jordan Davis and Old Dominion [too]. I love the vibe of those guys.” Nowadays, Melton has shifted gears, focusing on songwriting and creating original music. “I found out that it was really all about a song and that’s how everybody else got to where they got, having a great song. I think I started to focus on writing about 4 years ago.”

The singer has had the chance to work with some of his icons, playing writer’s rounds, and even writing with Old Dominion recently. His current single “Staycation” has received praise from the country music world, even landing on major playlists on both Apple Music and Spotify.  The single just so happened to coincide with the times, which made it even more perfect. “We wrote that song about six months ago,” he told us, adding, “It’s kinda a no brainer for us to give it to the people.” The song is the perfect introduction to Melton’s unique vocals and his creative and fresh songwriting.

Although Melton understandably cannot be sure of what the future has to hold, he promises that there will be more music coming down the pipeline soon. The singer shared that he wants to release a song every couple of months and hopes to head out on to the road when touring begins again. Until then, fans should stream “Staycation” as much as possible!

To keep up with Josh Melton follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Mickey Guyton Releases Heartfelt, “Heaven Down Here”

Heaven Down Here Mickey Guyton

Mickey Guyton is one of Nashville’s up and coming female singer + songwriters making a change. Throughout the duration of 2020, Guyton has been drawing attention to different causes, and her third single of the year “Heaven Down Here” asks for prayer and a little bit more love that we are all in need of.

Written by Guyton, Gordie Sampson, Josh Kear, and Hillary Lindsey, “Heaven Down Here” asks for help for our current state of the world. It’s structured as a conversation with somebody of higher power full of prayer and glimpses of hope and love.  She sings: “If you got a little love // Left in your back pocket // Rain it down like pennies // In this wishing well of tears // I know that you’re busy // But if you could hear me talking // We could use a little more heaven down here // We could use a little more heaven down here.”

Guyton shared on her Instagram page, “I wrote ”Heaven Down Here” during our lockdown and after seeing so much hate in this world. To be hated for something you cannot control is still so unfathomable to me. I wrote this asking God that if he has any love left up there to rain it down on us because we need it. I hope you can hear my heart and I hope you can find healing in this song.”

“Heaven Down Here” follows the singer + songwriter’s “What Are You Gonna Tell Her;” a call to action song recognizing the injustices of being a woman. It also follows Guyton’s single “Black Like Me” released in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd. The songstress has been very vocal on her social media platforms encouraging change and calling on fans to do the same.

Dan + Shay Release New Single “I Should Probably Go To Bed”

Dan + Shay I should Probably go to bed

After a quiet four months to reset the palate and focus on delivering their best work yet, the 2x Grammy-award winning duo have made their highly-anticipated return with a new single titled “I Should Probably Go To Bed”. The announcement took shape with an incredibly appealing teaser video that adds to the excitement of new music and predicts all good things for the familiar yet seemingly rebranded pair.

Despite the noteworthy and prominent direction of the teaser that may have been somewhat influenced by the current state of the world, Dan + Shay chose a more relaxed track to start off a new chapter of music. “I Should Probably Go To Bed” is molded as a stripped-down piano ballad, and expands as the song grows into itself. Though, with the vocal ability that Shay Mooney possesses, the opening verse is enough to be considered an entire, standalone performance. And with Dan Smyers’ production skills, which he did entirely from his home studio, the instrumental component and effects add a mesmerizing, hazy-eyed yet enlightening feel to the lyrics.

“So I should probably go to bed (Ah) / I should probably turn off my phone / I should quit while I’m ahead (Ah) / I should probably leave you alone / ‘Cause I know in the mornin’ (In the mornin’) / I’ll be callin’ (I’ll be callin’) / Sayin’ “sorry” for the things I said / So I, yeah, I should probably go to bed”

The accompanying video continues the intriguing and end-of-the-world, alternate universe feel that the teaser possessed. Though, the video becomes off-balance regarding both the camera itself and the environment surrounding all performers involved. Check it out below:

“I Should Probably Go To Bed” is the duo’s first release since October when their multi-week #1 hit collaboration with Justin Beiber “10,000 Hours” hit airwaves. The song received the most streams in country music history during the first week and is the first song by a country duo or group to debut in the Billboard Hot 100’s Top 5.

After seven years of their formation and three successful albums, Dan + Shay have only scratched the surface. This next era of the 5x Platinum “Tequila” and 4x Platinum “Speechless” artists feels big. It feels like their most creative and focused artistry yet.

To keep up with Dan + Shay, follow them on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.
