Thomas Rhett released an ode to all of the dad’s in an acoustic song entitled “Things Dads Do.” The singer-songwriter took to Instagram and introduced the song by explaining to his fans that “[he] wrote this song with [his] dad, for [his] dad, and for all dad’s out there”. His father is a well-known Nashville singer-songwriter, Rhett Akins, and this song is a testament to the strong bond that the two share that goes beyond a shared passion for music. The lyrics are reflective and written with an extremely personal level of detail. Yet, like most songs by the artist, this song is universally relatable as it encapsulates the relationship between a father and a child.
The melody follows a beautiful acoustic picking pattern, reminiscent of a lullaby as Rhett reflects on his childhood. The singer-songwriter details the way his father taught him important values, such as hard work, in both a humorous and light-hearted way. He sings, “He’ll make you mow the grass and do it for free / You think you’re done he’ll say rake the leaves / he’ll say it builds character but it’s 90 degrees”
The relatable lyrics depict a typical father-son dynamic full of teaching lessons the difficult way and unconditional love. Recounting more childhood memories, Rhett sings about his formidable years, when he was trying to ‘fit in at school’, “You’ll get embarrassed when he ruins your cool / when he pulls out his camera on your first day of school / that’s just a few things dads do”.
The anecdotal lyrics bring forward feelings of nostalgia and a deep appreciation for the special relationship between a parent and their children, detailing all that they go through together. The master storyteller brings the song full circle through the cycle of life and sings from his own perspective of becoming a dad to three daughters, Willa Gray, 4, Ada James, 2 and Lennon Love, 4 months.

Rhett closes the song beautifully, relating back to his own experience as a dad.
“You’re in his shoes and you’re starting to / do more than a few of things dads do.”
The singer admits to taking on more than a few tendencies of his own father, and that is how life goes. This is an emotional song that we hope Rhett records and releases, along with the other “IGTV singles” that he’s released via his Instagram page.

“I want to be myself on stage. I don’t want to be someone else on stage. I want to share my story.”
Our Swag Spotlight this week is a young, but talented singer-songwriter, Jamie Gabrielle. Fans of the Bachelor franchise may recognize her from her stint on the reality show, ‘Listen to Your Heart,’ but Gabrielle plans to showcase her staying power by making a name for herself in the country music world.
Growing up in North Jersey, the songstress had an interesting path towards country music. Originally, she was drawn to the pop music that she and her friends were listening to, but she recalls listening to a few, female country music artists growing up. Despite that, Gabrielle knew from a young age that she loved music and songwriting, recalls singing with her Grandmother, and writing songs at the tender age of six. “I just was always drawn to music. I loved the way music made me feel” she tells us, “It was a kinda a coping mechanism for me at first with writing, but now I’m fully immersed in it. It’s my passion.”
When Gabrielle was a little older she started to recognize how much she resonated with songwriting. “I’m a complete lyric person,” she exclaims, adding, “I started to discover writers like Lori McKenna, Natalie Hemby, and that’s what drew me into country music because I Ioved the storytelling.” Of course, McKenna and Hemby are two of the most prolific songwriters in the genre.
Gabrielle continued to pursue her passion, heading to Berklee College of Music to hone her craft, excelling at music theory, and perfecting her songwriting process. Upon graduating, she made the big move to Nashville, Tennessee, where she hit the pavement, playing at writers round and networking within the industry.
Eventually, Gabrielle found herself being chosen to be one of the contestants on the Bachelor Listen to Your Heart, a show that just finished airing a couple of months ago on ABC. Participating in a major network TV show may have provided the songstress with a platform for her music and her talent, but what she took away from the time on the show was much more profound.
With her new found confidence in her passion and fans supporting her, Gabrielle set out to conquer the country music world. Last month, she finally made her debut, releasing her first single entitled “Go To Your Head.” “I was feeling really inspired,” she shared about the writing process for the new song, “…it’s all about loving somebody and wanting to boost their confidence, wanting them to feel good.” She went on to explain that this is exactly how she is in relationships and that she believes in the power of positivity.
Looking ahead, fans can expect more new music from Gabrielle. She plans to introduce herself through her music and hopes that fans can connect to her lyrics. “I will show all facets of my personality and people will see all sides of me,” she promised, “my music is a true reflection of myself.”
Gabrielle truly believes in the power of music, and we are excited to see how fans continue to resonate with her stories and her words.

Just as fiery as Caylee Hammack herself, “Redhead” blazes onto the country music scene with another fierce redhead, the queen, Reba McEntire. With this track, Hammack confirms the stereotype of redheads being spitfires, and though she owns every bit of her firecracker personality, she admits that it might have been a little harder to raise a child with this much spunk.
Inspired by an older cousin with flames as locks, “Redhead”, co-written with Natalie Hemby and Trent Dabbs, has that old rock beat, with Hammack’s smooth, deep vocals overtop, and lyrics that roll right off the tongue.

McEntire’s addition adds to the grit of the track, bringing an even deeper appreciation for their unique perspective on being a redhead. She tells it like it is, with specific stories of joy, love, heartache, and hope, and even a little bitterness sprinkled in. NBC’s The Voice has spotlighted so many talented artists over the years, especially in the country genre. Artists who had a stint on the television show like Morgan Wallen, Danielle Bradbery, and Cassadee Pope, all went on to have incredible careers in the industry. Kameron Marlowe is another name you might recall from the show, but you will remember because of his talent. The newcomer and recently signed Columbia Nashville recording artist released his newest track “Burn ‘Em All” on Friday (6/26)
The new song perfectly supports Marlowe’s gritty growl and enticing vocals. The singer pours his heart out in each lyric, reminiscent of artists like Luke Combs and Randy Houser. Although the track is delightfully country, it features heavy guitars and EDM-esque beat drops, making it a fresh, yet familiar sound that you cannot help but love. Furthermore, Marlowe utilizes the phrase “Burn ‘Em All” to signify literal and figurative experiences letting things go for a moment.
“Pour the gas, light the match, set the night on fire / Set the blaze, let the flames get higher / Every cigarette, every dollar, every problem you got on you from a town this small / Tonight we’re gonna burn ‘em all”
Marlowe is sure to follow up this track with another jam that continues to showcase different sides of his personality. He is a real singer and fans are sure to relate to his sound and his story. We are excited to see what is next for the newcomer!

When a song moves you in a way that it feels like it’s telling your story, it’s one of the most special feelings. It’s a reminder of how big the world is, and yet, how small it is — that we feel the same things and share so many similar chapters. Brett Eldredge’s new LP Sunday Drive is out July 10th, and today he shared the title track with fans two weeks early.
“Sunday Drive” is not the typical modern country cut. Clocking in just shy of 5 minutes, it’s is a gorgeous and evocative piano-and-strings song about looking back on your childhood and learning how to see life from your parent’s point of view. You listen to their favorite music, look at the scenery, and hear their thoughtful conversations. “And we were only young but they were trying hard to reach us/How was I to know that there was something so worth keeping?” The roles reverse as both Eldredge and his parents get older. Eldredge helps them to the backseat and takes his parents on that same drive they went on as a family all those years ago. “And I listened as they reminisced,” he sings on the third verse. “About a world that they had always known/And how it’s changing/Probably never gonna be the same again”.
Eldredge didn’t write the song; it was written by Barry Dean, Don Mescall, and Steve Robson. “Many years ago, I was an intern at universal music publishing where I worked in the basement tape room transferring CDs into MP3s,” Eldredge explained in a press release. “I loved listening to all of the incredible songwriters’ songs and was always blown away by what people could create from their soul. One day I stumbled upon this song called “Sunday Drive,” and I was stopped in my tracks. I couldn’t believe a song could be written by someone else but feel like every word and melody was every part of my life existence. I secretly/selfishly hoped and prayed no one would record it so that one day when the time was right, I could record it and make it something extremely special.”
When you’re a kid growing up, all you can hope for is to be just like your parents. Or maybe it’s the complete opposite; you want to learn so you don’t make their same mistakes. You want to be the best version of yourself and make them proud. Sometimes, it may feel like you don’t need your family as much as you used to. But as Eldredge says, “…that’s where I learned it all, from them/To fight, to love, to laugh again/Man, I thought we were only wasting time/Out on a Sunday drive”.

Cassadee Pope is one of the most eclectic singer-songwriters in country music. She’s a little bit country, rock, alternative, and pop all rolled into one. She can add folk into the mix now; Pope released two songs off her upcoming acoustic LP Rise and Shine, out August 7th that show off her incredible songwriting and vocal range. “Built This House” and “Let Me Go” are the follow-ups to her independent smash, Stages, released in early 2019.
There are eight tracks on Pope’s upcoming album, and she released the opener and the closer. The opener, “Let Me Go”, is a stunning ballad about a relationship that needs to end one way or another. “You don’t want me but you won’t take/these chains off from my wrists,” she sings on the chorus to her partner. “I’ll never be good enough for you, never be good enough/What are we doing? You don’t get me so/so let me go”. Pope wrote it with Tina Parol and Kevin Rudolph, and Pope helped produce the track. The guitar is clear, and the mandolin buildup shines throughout as she sings these honest words.
“I wanted people to hear these [songs] in their purest form so I went with a more stripped back sound that really lets the lyrics stand out,” Pope said in a press release. “My hope is that these songs help aid people into feeling every emotion they need to let out.”
“Built This House” is a reflection about the end of a relationship, but on the other side of the breakup. It’s more upbeat in production, and so is the story. Pope sings along to a summery guitar, saying, “brick by brick, board by board/I built this house/from the foundation to the roof.” She uses a metaphor of building a house to the building of her self-worth and confidence. She wrote the track with Kelly Archer and Forest Glen Whitehead, and it’s a song that exudes clarity and personal ownership.
Cassadee Pope has always been such an important voice in country music. She has made music on her terms, used her platform to become a social activist, and has always been upfront about who she is and how she’s feeling. It’s heard in all her music, but especially this new chapter.

It has been a long journey, but we have finally arrived at The Lemonade Stand, emerging country artist Tenille Townes’ debut album. Produced by Jay Joyce, the Canadian musician continues to showcase her creative songwriting skills with five new songs compiled with previous tracks from her Road to the Lemonade Stand EP and Living Room Worktapes, including the emotional “Jersey on the Wall” and her Billboard-charting hit “Somebody’s Daughter.” The virtual video interview below, Townes talks to us about what fans can expect from the record.
“The Lemonade Stand is a collection of songs that mean so much to me and are the way I see the world in this season of my life right now,” Townes shared. “I want this music to be like a gathering place, where people can come and be filled up. I hope this record reminds people of who they are, that they are not alone, and reminds them of their dreams.”
“Jersey on the Wall” and “Somebody’s Daughter” touch on two themes that we have never heard on country radio before. “Jersey on the Wall,” tells the story of a high school student who passed away in a car accident, which compels the singer to question God on tragedy and other aspects of life. In “Somebody’s Daughter,” which peaked at number 29 on the Billboard Hot Country Charts, she sings about a homeless woman on the corner of the street. That woman is a person too, just like herself, which makes Townes wonder how that woman got there and why she’s the one driving by in her car and not the one holding the cardboard sign.
As for the rest of the album, love is a major theme and it is expressed in various ways. It could be as simple as “The Way You Look Tonight” featuring Keelan Donovan, where the two just describe how looking at the other person makes them feel. In “Lighthouse,” Townes explains that the two people in any given relationship need to be there for each other to guide them through hardships. In one of the previously released tracks, “White Horse,” she explains how your love story doesn’t have to be one out of a fairy tale; love comes in all different forms.
“Maybe not the way I was dreaming of / But you rode in and won my love / And now I’m finally on the right course / Who needs a white horse?”
As those songs describe love in relationships, there are songs about trying to find love as well, which is represented in “Find You,” “Where You Are,” and “Holding Out for the One.” In both “Find You” and “Where You Are,” Townes describes how relentless she would be and all the things she would do to find love. “Holding Out for the One” is a fun, upbeat song where she turns down every guy trying to pick her up at the bar because she knows none of them are “the one” and she is saving her heart for that person.
“I’m not the girl with her high heels in her hand / In last night’s little black party dress / Yeah, maybe I’m a little bit different I guess / But I ain’t giving my heart to just anyone / No, I’m holding out for the one”
“I Kept the Roses” is a vintage sounding ballad and the lone break-up song on the record. In this song, Townes sings about physical things from her former relationship that she has gotten rid of or given up, like the pictures, his t-shirts, the bar they went to, and even the friends they hung out with, to erase certain memories they once shared. However, the one thing she kept was the roses he bought her to show that there was good that came from it. Relationships, good or bad, shape the person you are today and she doesn’t want to forget what love feels like.
Townes touches on faith in ballads, “The Most Beautiful Things” and “When I Meet My Maker.” The latter is a Townes solo write and is not your typical song in terms of structure; it’s more of a poem. In it, she talks about the day she arrives in heaven and what her first conversation with God will be like. To hear more about “When I Meet My Maker”, check out our exclusive interview below. In “The Most Beautiful Things,” she lists things in life such as sunsets, shooting stars, and diamonds that are visually stunning. However, she states the things in life that are the most beautiful are the ones we cannot see, like love and faith.
“So why do we close our eyes / When we pray, cry, kiss, dream / Maybe the most beautiful things in this life are felt and never seen”
One of our favorite songs on the record, “Come As You Are” goes in its own category. Conveniently placed in the middle of the record, “Come As You Are” serves as the feel-good, party track to break up all the different emotions Townes makes us feel throughout The Lemonade Stand. This song is a reminder that it’s okay to let your worries go once in a while, let loose and just be yourself.
“Life is a party on a rooftop / So just go ahead and let your heart stop / All you gotta do is bring what you got / ‘Cause this elevator only goes up”
“This record is the dream that I had when I was a seven-year-old kid singing along in the backseat of the car,” Townes admitted. “She would really be freaking out right now.”
And the “freak-out” is well deserved. This album is a true reflection of Townes and her craft. Listeners can easily tell she poured her heart into this record by how genuine each and every lyric is. We understand how difficult it can be to honestly express yourself as a female in a male-dominated genre. We hope that young and talented musicians like herself motivate others to tell their stories and follow the same path. If Townes is the source of inspiration for aspiring female country artists, then the industry is in very good hands.

Teddy Robb is a country newcomer who is wrestling in conventional country offerings. Featured in one of our NYCS Swag Sessions and NYCountry Swag Country Brunch alumni, the Akron, Ohio native has released a new nostalgic single “Heaven On Dirt.”
“Heaven On Dirt” looks back at all of Robb’s sentimental memories growing up in the heart of the country and the little things that made life super special and still continues to offer him comfort. The song opens up with a twangy, catchy guitar line and light percussion. He pays tribute to his father in the first verse and his rebellious years. The second verse is a tribute to his first love, good friends, and his first car. He makes an interesting revelation: sometimes you don’t realize how good you have it until you don’t but in a good, cherishable way. He sings, “The beer was cold, the trucks were old, the dust was gold…It was heaven on dirt”
Robb shared a glimpse of this on his Instagram page sharing a golden photo of the singer + songwriter as a child, posed with a hunting prize, and a Father’s Day post with his father.

Our of our all-time favorite artists and one of our day ones, Russell Dickerson continues to have one of the most exciting careers in country music. Last year, he accomplished a rare feat as his first three singles to country radio achieved the number one spot on the charts. This year, he released his first song off his upcoming sophomore record entitled “Love You Like I Used To,” and now he has gifted fans with another new song, “Home Sweet.”
Upon listening, fans can tell almost instantly that this song is clearly a Dickerson anthem. Somehow, the artist has mastered the art of creating music that always feels like him. All of Dickerson’s songs feel authentic, bouncy, and passionate, and “Home Sweet” fits the bill perfectly.
“That doormat says welcome home / But I think it’s wherever I’m with you / It’s more than some bricks and stones / No there ain’t nothing like home sweet / You and me / Ain’t got much, but we got all we need”
This particular jam is another ode to the beautiful love that he and his wife, Kailey share together. “Home Sweet” is both fun and romantic. Dickerson pays homage to the notion that when we are with our better half, anywhere can be home. As a recording artist, the singer is often living on a tour bus or a hotel room, but when Kailey accompanies him, it feels like he has home with him.
In other words, home is a person, not a destination. Dickerson manages to remind us of that sentiment, yet, we feel like it’s the first time we ever heard it. He never disappoints! Cheers to another hit and his growing family, the pair is expecting their first child later this year!
