Swag Spotlight Alumni Rayne Johnson Releases “Last Name”

Rayne Johnson Last Name

Rayne Johnson took over the radio airwaves with his single, the heartfelt “Front Seat.” We learned a little bit about the process for that song and others in our Swag Spotlight feature back in October. Today, Johnson is premiering a new song entitled “Last Name.”

Fans are sure to be smitten with the singer-songwriters cheeky and romantic new single. “Last Name” is the song for people, who find it hard to share their feelings with the ones they love. The upbeat and groovy tune is a clever way of telling your loved one that you want to marry them in a roundabout kind of way. Johnson is a pro at cleverly weaving together intricate and diverse lyrics, keeping fans guessing with ambiguity.

“Oh you got it going on from head to toe/ There’s just one thing about you girl you gotta know / I don’t like your last name / I think you need a new one / And I’ve been holding on to mine/ Baby if you want one”

Vocally, Johnson appears to be having a blast on the song. His influences span from the classics in country to R&B and everything in between and “Last Name” showcases those inspirations perfectly. We especially love how Johnson chooses to end the song. Take a listen to find out for yourself. So far, the singer has proven that he is the real deal and that he will continue to keep fans entertained and excited for his music.

“Last Name” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

NYCS First Impression Nick Wayne American Original EP

Nick Wayne EP

Nashville is filled with a plethora of unsigned and ridiculously talented artists, and one of the most striking in Music City would be Nick Wayne. Wayne is one of the few born and raised in Nashville, cultivating a unique and soulful sound that’s resulted in projects like his new EP, American Original.

The title track and the first on the EP was written by Wayne, Bob DiPiero, and Jason Grant. It’s the most country-rock of the collection and has the same vibe production-wise as “Ex To See” by Sam Hunt. Lyrically, it’s a foot-stomping, feel-good song about his love for fiancé and fellow singer-songwriter Hannah Ellis. “That needle hits the groove/And she moves/In her own direction”, Wayne sings on the first verse, before sailing into the chorus, where he declares that his love is “an American original”. Melodically, there are a lot of effortless note changes that come when you least expect them to. It’s a song made to be played in the car with your friends, sung at the top of your lungs.

Next is the soulful and groovy “Just Getting Started”, written by Wayne, Trent Harmon, and Mark Trussell. Dispersed throughout the entirety of the song are some really great samples of concert crowds, a busy bar, and glasses clinking. Rhythmically, it’s the most pop/r&b of the bunch, almost sounding like a Niall Horan cut. Something that Wayne does seamlessly is he combines multiple different sounds and genres together, making for something distinctive that sounds like him. The harmonies in this song hit you out of nowhere, and it showcases his vocal versatility.

The closer is the upbeat, almost traditional country track, “Hang On, My Wife’s Calling”, written by Wayne, Jason Massey, and Mark Trussell. It’s made to sound like it was performed outside during a party of some kind, intentionally casual. The guitar is cool rhythmically and melodically. Wayne sets the scene, describing the party he’s at and the shots he’s about to drink with his friends when he pauses from “the buzz in his pocket…/Woah, hang on my wife’s calling”, to which his friends laugh. He continues to answer his phone throughout the whole night, because “guys like me/don’t get girls like her”. There’s tambourine that hits by the second chorus that makes it even hookier. It’s a breezy, fun way to end the EP.

Nick Wayne has released other projects before, and each time he does, he raises the bar even higher than before. He’s got an incredible, smooth voice, and a real ear for hooks and rhymes, and continues to challenge himself and his fans sonically. There are big things ahead of Wayne, and it will be exciting to see and hear what happens next.

To keep up with Nick Wayne, follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Tyler Rich Surprises Fans With New Track “Feels Like Home”

Tyler Rich Feels Like Home

One of our favorites, Tyler Rich has been keeping busy throughout all of quarantine. Between hosting his weekly virtual ‘Leave Her Wild’ Sunday Brunches, talking with radio stations, and even joining our own virtual brunch back in April, Rich is keeping fans excited for his music. Just last week, the singer-songwriter announced via his social media platforms that a new song was slated to come out. Today, “Feels Like Home” has finally been released!

The song has already proven to be a hit in live shows, but finally having a recorded version is a moment both fans and Rich can simultaneously rejoice in. “Exploring new cities, meeting strangers, and finding pubs or dive bars that make you feel like home inspired this song,” he shared in a recent press release, “I hope this song makes people feel nostalgic and reminds us all of our favorite people and places when we need the feel of community even more.” The message could not come at a better time.

“I came here tonight to forget why I’m here / If you’re with me then why don’t you raise up a beer / Dance with a stranger that you’d like to know / Cause it feels like home / This hole in the wall has a hell of a view”

Rich penned the track alongside Andrew DeRoberts and Jon Nite, but it’s clear that the fans had a huge inspiration for the tune. Rich ironically recorded the song at home in Los Angeles, which adds to its nostalgia. John Mayer’s drummer, Aaron Sterling, lent his skills to the record as well. The song is definitely in Rich’s wheelhouse, effortlessly blending country music with California charm.

To keep up with Tyler Rich follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

“Feels Like Home” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Shy Carter Releases His Debut Single “GOOD LOVE”

Good Love Shy Carter

Warner Music Nashville recording artist, Shy Carter is delivering a debut original song that everyone needs right now. “I’ve been so blessed to have such a beautiful career writing song for the best artist in the world- but now I’m so excited for y’all to hear a song most special to me. GOOD LOVE,” shared the singer on his Instagram. Fans of country music and music, in general, will have chills after listening to this songwriter, turned artists’ new track, “GOOD LOVE.”

From the first note to the last, make no mistake about it, Carter can sing. His vocals shine in this powerful, yet effortless tune. “GOOD LOVE” spreads an inspiring message, showcasing the forces of strength, faith, hope, and love. The song, co-written by Carter with Micah Carter, James Slater, and Carlo Colasacco was written for Slater’s late younger brother Christian, but the song truly feels like it was meant personally for every listener. The soulful flair makes this an anthem for those who need it, and it most certainly will remain a song that will always be there for you to recall during trying times.

“When I feel like I’m dying / You come around with that good love / Good love, good love / Make me feel like it’s alright / Make me believe in this good life / Yeah you pick me up”

We are so excited to see what Shy Carter releases next. He is the real deal as a songwriter, artist, and creative. While you are at it, do not forget to stream “Way Down,” a song Carter penned and is featured on that was released last year by Tim McGraw.

NYCS First Impression: Gabby Barrett ‘Goldmine’

Gabby Barrett Goldmine

Gabby Barrett’s biggest strength, besides her powerhouse voice and killer songwriter’s instinct, is her ability to not take no for an answer. For any female artist, unfortunately, it is a feat to get played on country radio. The NYCountry Swag 2020 Artist to Watch never let that stop her: “I Hope”, her debut single, went #1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, Billboard’s Country Streaming Songs chart, and Country Digital Sales Chart. Her follow up single, “The Good Ones” has surpassed 10 million streams and it was just sent to country radio. Her debut album, Goldmine is out today, June 19th, and is as much of a firecracker as Barrett is.

Prior to the release, NYCountry Swag caught up with Barrett for a virtual interview to chat about the record, her songwriting, and her incredible career so far. Check it out in the video below.

“Thank God”, is the album’s second track following bonafide hit “I Hope”, and was co-written by Barrett, Nicolle Galyon, Jon Nite and, Jimmy Robbins. The lyrics explore Barrett’s don’t-take-no-for-an-answer attitude, and on the first verse, she sings, “Not having that much money/Led to dreaming that much more/And that got me to Nashville, trying to knock down slamming doors”. It’s an upbeat anthem all about being thankful for all the hardships in her life because they led her to where she is now, and she is a better person because of it.

Barrett co-wrote all but one song on the album, with the title track, “Goldmine” being the exception. The production on this song is reminiscent of an old Carrie Underwood record, and it suits her style perfectly. Caitlyn Smith is one of the writers, and although it sounds very Gabby Barrett, there’s something about the chorus and the way the lyrics are woven into the melody that also screams Smith. “Goldmine” showcases Barrett’s unbelievable range sonically and vocally. “If your kisses are your riches/then you’ve hit the jackpot”, she sings on the chorus. The track has self-confidence mixed with gratitude for her partner.

Every song on her record sounds like a hit. It’s not that there are no evocative moments on the record; “The Good Ones”, “Strong”, and “Got Me”, the latter featuring Christian duo Shane&Shane are songs where it’s clear that they’re coming straight from Barrett’s heart. Barrett’s love for her husband, family, and her faith are all strong themes throughout the record. Yet, even in the deepest of her songs, the ear-candy hooks and production buildups allow each and every song to be radio-ready while still remaining personal.

“I am so excited that my first album is finally complete,” Barrett shared in a press release. “I’ve been writing for this project for almost two years, pulling together who I am as an artist and working hard with my team to make this album an expression of that. To see it come together like this feels amazing and is such a huge blessing.”

A moment where Barrett absolutely shines is on “Hall of Fame”. There’s something very youthful and summer-esque about it, and it’s addictively catchy. The song opens with an acoustic guitar lick that’s unlike anything else on country radio. Lyrically, it’s very universal, but there are little phrases that she and the songwriters were able to flip on their heads. “Living to the rhythm of your heartbeat/Beats everything I’ve ever felt,” she sings on the first verse. The chorus is describing her relationship with husband Cade Foehner, and why she feels like it belongs in the “hall of fame”. “For the way you look at me/It should all go down in history/They’d hang your picture on the wall and write your name/If love had a hall of fame.”

There’s a willingly naive part of Gabby Barrett and an older-than-she is maturity that spreads throughout the whole album. That in part has to do with her being only 20, yet taking on the responsibility of being a wife and having a rising career. This reflects in her choice of co-writers, who are a mix of seasoned veteran writers, like Liz Rose and Josh Kear, current hit-makers, like Nicolle Galyon and Ross Copperman and newer, emerging writers, like Trannie Anderson and Emily Landis.

If this debut album is any indication, music fans will be hearing Gabby Barrett’s name for a long time. She is full of fire and has grit, while also displaying grace and class. In the words of Barrett herself, she seems to have hit the jackpot.

To keep up with Gabby Barrett, you can find her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Walker Hayes Supports ‘Kindness Isn’t Canceled’ with Virtual Show

A few weeks ago, we joined forces with radio station New York’s Country 94.7, Walker Hayes, and the ‘Be a Craig’ fund to help feed the frontline workers of New York City. For each purchase of our Kindness Isn’t Canceled shirt, the profits were donated to all of the heroes on the frontlines in NYC fighting COVID-19. The purchase also gave you access to an exclusive Walker Hayes show.

Feeding the Frontlines in New York City

NYCountry Swag’s Stephanie Wagner and New York’s Country 9.47’s Kelly Ford Feeding the Frontlines in NYC

Wednesday (June 17.) was the show with Hayes and in these crazy times, it was nice to feel a little bit of normalcy with a live show, even if it was virtual on Zoom.

The concert started off with our own Stephanie Wagner and Christina Bosch along with Jesse Addy and Mike Allan from New York’s Country 94.7 discussing teaming up with IGC Hospitality and delivering the meals to the frontlines. During the course of the campaign, we delivered food to hospitals, firehouses, and precincts throughout the city. A big shout out to anyone who purchased a t-shirt and helped complete our goal of delivering 500 meals!

Kindness Walker Hayes

Hayes then joined and talked about the ‘Be a Craig Fund’. Did you know it started from the inspiration of the singer-songwriter’s neighbor Craig? From the first-time meeting at church, Craig immediately started looking out for the Hayes family. He made sure they had food, made sure Walker kept writing, and even gifted the family a minivan. Hayes’s wanted to pass on the selflessness that Craig shared with the Hayes family.

Getting ready for the set to start, the zoom room was a sea of red. everyone had their Kindness Isn’t Canceled and ‘Be a Craig’ shirts on and were ready to rock.

Kindness Walker Hayes

Hayes started out the way he starts every show by playing “Dollar Store”. Playing nine songs in total, it was the perfect set. From upbeat fan favorites including “90s Country”, the multiplatinum song “You Broke Up With Me”  and the quarantine inspired song “Stay Thicc” to his more serious songs including “Lela’s Stars”, which was written in a Costco parking lot and the reason Hayes continued his music career, the Alabama native played it all. Finishing out the night with his latest radio single“Trash My Heart”, everyone was dancing and singing along in their living rooms as if they were at their favorite concert venue.

Walker Hayes Kindness

One great part of a Zoom concert is the artist has the chance to really interact with their fans, watching their reaction to new music, shouting them out and reading and answering questions through the chat. It gave fans a chance to really show their love for Walker Hayes and we loved seeing it!

We can’t thank Walker Hayes enough for teaming up with us and the radio station. Founder of NYCountry Swag, Stephanie surprised Walker by making an announcement last night that for each Kindness Isn’t Canceled shirt that is sold for the rest of the summer 20% of the proceeds will be donated to the ‘Be a Craig’ Fund.

Take a listen to Walker’s single “Trash My Heart” below.

Country Music Songs Inspired By The COVID-19 Pandemic

Luke Combs COVID-19

Coronavirus has taken the world by storm – a storm nobody saw coming in a million years – the last couple of months and we are finally starting to see the other side. Even though this virus changed the way we had to live our lives for a little while, putting a stop to all live music events, musicians took this time to do what they do best; channel inspiration and create music.

Here are five country music songs that have been recorded and released during the quarantine.

“Six Feet Apart” – Luke Combs

Co-written by Brent Cobb and Rob Synder, Combs depicts the state of how uncomfortable we all feel as well as the sadness he was feeling at the beginning of the lockdown stages. The song captured the universal feeling of uncertainty as everybody tried to piece together the shift. He sings, “I miss my mom, I miss my dad // I miss the road, I miss my band // Giving hugs and shaking hands // Well, it’s a mystery I suppose just how long this thing goes // But they’ll be crowds and they’ll be shows // There will be light after dark someday when we aren’t six feet apart.”

“Between Me and the End of the World” – Adam Hambrick

This song is a tribute to all of the frontline workers who step up and step in during times of trouble. Hambrick’s wife is a physician assistant and was fighting on the frontlines of COVID and he offered his perspective. He sings: “Facing all the fire the devil can’t hurt // It’s a hell of a thing // Watching you stand in between // Me and the end of the world”

“The Optimist” – Kelleigh Bannen

Bannen describes her transformative love with her husband and their continued story throughout quarantine with “wine drunk kitchen dances.” At the time of the release, the singer + songwriter shared on her Instagram, “I could use a little extra optimism right now, and maybe you could too. I sang this in my kitchen a few weeks back….it was only ever intended to be a little home demo, but this season has a way of reframing everything in its path, even simple songs. So I thought I’d share it with you, maybe it will bring you a little extra hope and human connection today.”

“Stay Home” – Big & Rich

One of the first acts to bring music into the situation, Big & Rich brought some comedy in the style of music talking about homeschooling, the persistent search for toilet paper, crazy kids, and staying home in your underwear.

“We’re all about half crazy // Kids are bouncin’ off the wall // Yoga’s done got canceled // Mama’s pacin’ down the hall // Homeschool’s now in session // And I’m pullin’ out my hair // It’s halfway through the mornin’ // I’m still in my underwear”

“When Life Is Good Again” – Dolly Parton

Dolly always provides comfort when you need it. During this time, she shared her talent with the world and also donated one million dollars to Nashville’s Vanderbilt Hospital for a Coronavirus cure. At the end of May, the songstress released the official music video for “When Life Is Good Again.” Parton has continuously shared her support for the frontline workers on her Instagram page. Lastly, during this difficult time, the singer + songwriter started a weekly series Goodnight with Dolly where she virtually read bedtime stories to children.

“Since our world was forever changed by the COVID virus, I have felt a deep respect and appreciation for all of our frontline responders,” says Parton. “This video is to pay respect to them and to remind all of us that this too shall pass. If we pull together as a community, we can rise above and look forward to more beautiful days on the horizon.”

Music will continue to inspire us as we face the end of our lockdown situations and slowly but steadily we will finally have live events again.

What We’re Listening To: June Picks

NYCountry Swag’s “What We’re Listening To” playlist highlights the wide range of our team’s favorite songs and artists when it comes to the country music genre.  At the end of the day, we are all fans first with a passion for country music and are eager to share with you all what we’ve got on repeat each month.

Find below each of our team member’s favorite songs and why in our June picks. Then be sure to give our Spotify account a follow and listen to our favorite tracks!

JUNE PICKS:

Stephanie Wagner, Founder

Pick: “Would Have Loved Her” – Chris Bandi
Songwriters: Chris Bandi, Zach Kale

This month I chose Chris Bandi’s “Would Have Loved Her” off his recently released debut EP. When I say I’m listening to this song on repeat, I mean literally I’ve got it looped all day long. I fell in love with the concept of the song even before hearing it and once it was officially released I was immediately hooked. Much like the song I chose last month, this is another piano-led ballad, but the heartfelt tearjerking lyrics are truly what drew me in. The song starts with the singer speaking to his late father, talking about meeting a girl he wishes his Dad could have met and he knows he would have loved her.

“She’s from a small town just like you // She’s got a smile that could light up the room // She’s pretty as a hallelujah // But don’t let it fool ya / ‘Cause she’ll dance when she drinks // And she’ll say what she thinks // She makes me a better man like you did // I miss you and wish you could just meet each other // ‘Cause I bet you would’ve loved her”

As the song progresses, each line moves through the phases of falling in love, getting married, and having a baby of his own, circling back to the idea that the late father would love her. From start to finish it’s an all-around beautiful song that truly deserves to be heard.

Christina Bosch, Managing Editor

Pick: “Never Will” – Ashley McBryde
Songwriters: Ashley McBryde, Blue Foley, Chris Harris, Christian Sancho, Matt Helmkamp, Victor Hill

One of the most authentic creators in the country genre is Ashley McBryde. Her powerful voice carries over some of the truest lyrics ever written, and she has a way of recording and releasing music that is so specific to her story and yet, I always find a way to relate.

“Never Will” the title track of her latest full-length project, tells the tale of looking back proudly of never giving up, never giving in to the people who didn’t believe in you. In McBryde’s case, it probably is a reflection of her early years in the music business, in my case, it’s following a determination and a dream.

The lyrics in the bridge are the perfect kick in the ass that the CMA New Artist of the Year winner is known for and inspire dreamers everywhere: “Money and fame, it’ll go to your head if you get it / They never did understand all the reasons we did it / I can call out the names and the faces of the people who said it / Oh, but honestly, I just don’t want ’em to get any credit”

Her entire sophomore album is a masterpiece, each song tells the truth about life and I constantly listen in awe of her talent.

Lucie Bernheim, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Love Me Now” – Josh Kerr
Songwriters: Josh Kerr, Tom Douglas

My friends and I have loved watching movies over Zoom during quarantine, and one of the movies we watched was “Perks of Being a Wallflower”. So much moved me about the movie; besides longing for my time at high school to end as it did in the final scene, it started a conversation amongst my friend group: what would our tunnel song be? The song that we turned up to listen to so freely while driving down the highway, feeling forever young in that moment?
“Love Me Now” by Josh Kerr isn’t that song, although he has plenty of epic songs that could be. “Love Me Now” is the coming of age movie. It’s about high school, graduation, youth, hurting, moving on, and evolving into a better version of yourself. “I admit I’m kind of broken, but I’ll heal,” Kerr sings honestly on the second verse. It’s not the song they play in the beginning or at the end, it’s the song that sits perfectly in the middle. You’ve changed, and you know you have, but there’s still so much life you’ve yet to live and experience. There is something so poignant about the delivery of this song. It’s cinematic and thoughtful, equal parts due to Kerr and Douglas’ writing, Kerr’s flawless production, and the vulnerability in his voice. When I think about finishing high school, I think about how much I have evolved since freshman year. Walking in 14 and leaving 18 is a huge difference, and as Kerr says, “Candles at both ends burning / Baby don’t the world keep turning”.

Pick: “Worldwide Beautiful” – Kane Brown
Songwriters: Kane Brown, Jordan Schmidt, Ryan Hurd, Shy Carter

In a time when everyone is fighting each other on all different issues, I find comfort in songs that talk about unity. If we all stop judging individuals based on their skin color, uniform, political view, etc. and come together as a nation, the world would be a better place to live in. This is the message Kane is trying to get across in this song. I know I am so greatly influenced by music and hope this song reaches and impacts those who, like Kane says, have unmovable hearts.

“We ain’t that different from each other / From one to another, I look around and see worldwide beautiful”

Pick: “We Do” – Kenny Chesney
Songwriters: Kenny Chesney, Craig Wiseman, David Garcia, Scooter Carusoe

Everyone has a summer anthem and after listening to this Kenny Chesney song about 500 times, it’s safe to say this is mine. The first song off his Here and Now album, it’s one of those songs that’ll bring a smile to your face every time you hear it. When I close my eyes, I see myself tailgating at MetLife Stadium before his 2018 concert and it brings back so many great memories.

Yeah, we laugh and we love // And we can’t get enough // As loud as we’re livin’, man / We still turn it up // We’re amplified, come alive // Side by side // No matter where it goes // You know we’re here for the ride// Who gets to roll like we do? // We do // // Yeah, who wants to rock like we do? // We do // Yeah, who ain’t gonna stop, man, no matter what? // And who gets to live like we do? // We do

Everyone is still bummed about the Chillaxifcation tour being postponed until 2021 but this song and this entire album give me hope that next year’s version of the tour will be even better, even if we have to wait another year for it.

Pick: “Soldier” – Craig Morgan
Songwriters: Gavin DeGraw

This is a track off Craig Morgan’s latest album, God, Family, Country, and a cover of Gavin DeGraw’s original song. Morgan’s rendition kicks an emotional punch, in a good way. It’s an undeniable feel-good anthem with uplifting lyrics like “I’ll get it if you need it / I’ll search if you don’t see it / If you’re thirsty, I’ll be your rain / If you get hurt, I’ll take your pain.” Also, I love that Morgan and producer/writer Phil O’Donnell enlisted a choir of vocalists to do the background vocals. There’s something special when you hear the soulful “oooo’s” and soaring echoes of certain words in the song! If you need a good pick-me-up, especially during this time, take a listen. You’ll have it on repeat after, I’m sure!

Pick: “Church in a Chevy” – Jordan Davis
Songwriters: Jordan Davis, Josh Jenkins, Matt Jenkins

I cannot stop listening to “Church in a Chevy” by Jordan Davis. This song is featured on his self-titled EP, released in May. From the very first listen, this is the type of song where you feel the deep emotion flood throughout your entire body as each lyric is sung. I love Davis’ music for the refreshing energy, but this mid-tempo ballad shows us a different side to the singer.

He raises the idea one does not have to attend church in order to practice their own personal form of religion. For Davis, the cathartic act of driving in a car is a mode for personal growth and self-discovery. The song is filled with vivid imagery, making one feel very connected to the message. At the close of the chorus, Davis sings, “Amazing grace came flooding through the windshield / felt some broken parts of me start to heal”. Everyone can relate to feeling that healing is personal to everyone, and can happen at any time and in any place.

Pick: “Hard To Forget” – Sam Hunt
Songwriters: Shane McAnally, Ashley Gorley, Audrey Grisham, Josh Osborne, Luke Laird, Mary Jean Shurtz, Russ Hall, Sam Hunt

I have always been a fan of Sam Hunt, from his very beginning to songs you’ve never heard of. My aunt is friends with his aunt, so I basically feel like I know him, and have heard stories about watching him grow up doing small shows in his hometown. This song does him justice with his constant talk-singing and the unforgettable catchy beats. We were waiting for new music, and this does not disappoint. The opening is such a cool modern twist on an old song banjo vibe, and a bit different from some of his others. It’s another perfect song for the summer to drive with the windows down, or in my case, the top down. Everyone always talks about playing hard to get, but they never mention playing hard to forget. A little more lighthearted than his “Break Up In A Small Town”, but with the same themes, you can jam while maybe feeling a little bitter about a breakup. This will be on my playlist for a while.

Pick: “Make Em Wanna Change” – Adam Sanders
Songwriters: Adam Craig, Adam Sanders, Dallas Wilson

This month I have been listening to Adam Sanders’ new song “Make Em Wanna Change”. While you may not know him as a singer, yet, you definitely know his songs including Cole Swindell’s “Ain’t Worth The Whiskey” and Dustin Lynch’s “Hell of a Night”. Sanders’ ability to write honest songs is what has kept me inching to hear everything he puts out. In his latest, he explains how some relationships, some people, just have something about them that makes you want to become a better person. With an upbeat tempo, a catchy chorus, and lyrics that you can instantly apply to your life, I see Sanders’ new song doing very well in the coming months.
“Yeah ’cause guys like me just need a girl like you to make ’em wanna change,”

Pick: “Break. Up. Drunk” – Chase Rice
Songwriters: Chase Rice, Hunter Phelps, Jordan Schmidt

My June pick is “Break. Up. Drunk.” by Chase Rice. I chose this song because it’s not your typical sad song. Rice took a sad situation and put an upbeat twist on it.  It’s the perfect song to dance to this summer whether you are going through a breakup or not.
Pick: “What Could’ve Been” – Gone West
Songwriters: Colbie Caillat, Danelle Reeves, Jamie Kenney, Jason Reeves, Justin Kawika Young
It’s hard to find a breakup song that feels unique from what’s already out there, especially in country music, but this track does it for me. Between the perfect harmonies, the simple arrangement, and the poignant lyrics, it checks every box. I have always been a Colbie Caillat fan but I think she and her new bandmates fit perfectly in the country genre. The story in the song is so relatable to listeners but told in a way that feels new and different. I’m so excited to follow this group as they continue to release new music!
“‘Cause we left blood the on the tracks / Sweat on the saddle / Fire in the hills / A bullet in the barrel / Words never said in a story that didn’t end / Looks like you’re on the mend and I’m on the bottle / We folded our hands with money on the table / Tried moving on but I keep coming back again, hmm / To what could’ve been”

Pick: “Show Me Around” – Carly Pearce
Songwriters: —

A lot of songs this month have hit me hard in the best possible away. My favorite thing about music is when a song can make me feel something and Carly Pearce’s unreleased “Show Me Around” did just that for me. Although it has not yet been released, Pearce blew me away with her tribute to her late friend and phenomenal producer/songwriter busbee. I cannot fully articulate how much the lyrics touched me.

I hope you know you left your mark on this world / I swear I’d give anything on this earth to see your face, but for now I’ll wait.”

I often think about the “afterlife,” and the only thing I know for certain is I hope my loved ones are the first people I see. Although it can feel like a taboo or morbid subject, “Show Me Around” somehow evokes pain and hope in the most beautiful of ways. I look forward to hopefully adding this song to my music library one day.
