Who Is Jordan Rowe? The Story Behind His Journey to Country Music

After releasing his debut track to the world, “Good For Nothin'”, newcomer Jordan Rowe spoke with NYCountry Swag about his backstory and his journey to Nashville. Read more about him below.

Jordan Rowe

As always, our Swag Spotlight this week features a rising artist that our team thinks our readers will love. Jordan Rowe, south Georgia native grew up singing in church much like many country stars however when we discuss in a recent chat about the artists that have influenced his life and his career, we don’t hear the usual ‘Johnny Cash’, ‘Merle Haggard’ or ‘George Strait’. Rowe laughs when saying that he recalls being most influenced by early Luke Bryan music, something that is refreshing to hear. He attended the University of Georgia and started performing as an opening act for artists around Athens, spending his summers in Nashville writing and interning at River House records before making the permanent move in June of 2019.

Since his move, its been a whirlwind of accomplishments including being signed to River House in partnership with Ashley Gorley’s publishing company Tape Room Music. “To have the opportunities that I’ve had so quickly, its such a blessing and that is all credit to God and his plan. I pray for opportunities to come and try to make the most of them when I get them, working really hard, writing so many songs lately and just working as hard as I can at it, being thankful for everything that this happened and soak it in and enjoy it.”

Rowe has also was able to be a part of Luke Combs’ Beer Never Broke My Heart tour last year playing the tailgate shows before opening acts Jameson Rodgers and Morgan Wallen, letting us know that that experience just him and his guitar getting to play for their fans was one of his favorite parts of this journey so far.

In a press release announcing his joint publishing deal, Rowe stated “One of my favorite Bible verses is Proverbs 16:9 which says, ‘The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.’” and during our chat, we discussed why he wanted to share that verse with the industry. “I was playing a show at the Georgia Theatre a while back, I was opening and a guy who was there owned an apparel company and gave me a box and in that box, he wrote a note to me and wrote that verse on it and I had never read that verse before,” he explains. “I thought it was so cool because I have planted my heart, I want to be a successful singer and songwriter but the Lord is establishing my steps to get there, from that moment on, every setlist I write that verse at the bottom of it because sometimes, I am singing to empty rooms or to people who act like they don’t care at all, but then I can look down at that setlist and say to myself, this might not be the best thing but this is one of those steps to where I want to be and where I am supposed to be.”

His faith in the process and his confidence in his craft, Rowe continues to shape the kind of artist and songwriter that he wants to be. Combining and melding a traditional sound with a freshness found in modern-day country, his debut single “Good For Nothin'” is the perfect way to showcase his versatility and who he is. “Traditional country twang is just where I naturally go, but I also feel like that is what people are longing for right now, that more traditional sound,” he states.

For fans of Luke Bryan, Morgan Wallen, and Jon Pardi will find a brand new favorite artist in Jordan Rowe. Thanking his eclectic taste in music, he understands that listeners today are loving a broad spectrum of genres and he hopes to write and record a cohesive first project over the course of the next year that will showcase all of his musical tastes and introduce his signature sound to country music fans.

Brothers Osborne: Skeletons – Album Review

Brothers Osborne’s new album, Skeletons is available now, October 9th. Take a listen and check out our album review below as we dig a little deeper into the collection of songs.

Brothers Osborne New Album Skeletons

Brothers Osborne’s ‘Skeletons’ is out now, October 9th.

We have come to love Brothers Osborne as a country duo who remain true to themselves and their music, highlighting crisp country-rock and heartfelt slower tunes. As talented singers and songwriters, the men deliver an elevated, yet enticing sound with their new record Skeletons, leaning more towards the country-rock side of the gamut of their talent.

Continuing to celebrate the southern-rock groove that Brothers Osborne has created, the record takes their message to another level. “If Pawn Shop was our introduction, and Port Saint Joe was like the first conversation we had with someone over a beer, then Skeletons is the moment where you start getting down to the real stuff and showing who you really are,” John shared in a recent press release, adding, “If you really want to get to know us, this is the record to do it.”

Skeletons is begging for live-music to return, as each song has killer instrumentals and arrangements that just need a stage and an audience! Beginning with “Lighten Up,” the brothers give fans the twangy sound that we have been accustomed to. The song quickly takes a more rambunctious tone, similar to their other killer rock jam, “All Night,” the top 30 single that comes immediately after. The title track, “Skeletons” is one of the best off the record. It features spectacular guitar rifts and an extraordinary amount of energy.

“High time to come to Jesus / You got skeletons in your closet / It’s written all over your face / Every little lie, stacked so high / Can’t keep your story straight.”

The platinum-selling duo continues to play for their fans. Songs like “All The Good Ones” and “ Back On The Bottle” are backed by a steady drum and quick and witty lyrics. On the other hand, “I’m Not For Everyone” and “High Note” take a softer approach. The former starts off slower and escalates into a more mid-tempo jam that has great radio appeal. “High Note” stays on the slower side of things but conveys the more romantic side of the duo’s talent.

Another standout track is “Old Man’s Boots.’ One of the more traditional-country tunes, the song is a lyrical masterpiece. Brothers Osborne expresses the importance of boots, country roots, and all that connects the two.

“Might not look like much to you / But there really wasn’t much they couldn’t walk through.”

TJ spoke for himself, John, and his band, sharing, “We want this record to show people that we’re here to stay. We are part of the cloth of this genre,” and we think that really says it all. Skeletons is just another impressive album by Brothers Osborne, and we anticipate many more in the future!

Travis Denning Drops Fan-Favorite New Track “Goodyears”

Travis Denning’s brand new song, “Goodyears” is available now, October 9th on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the track.

Breakout country artist, Travis Denning, proves he is here to stay with feel-good new country jam, “Goodyears”. This song arrives following the success of several recent releases, including his first No. 1, “After a Few” and current country radio single “Where That Beer’s Been”. Denning consistently delivers genuine country songs that feature a laid-back cool twist, leading his music to stand out amongst others.

The new single, “Goodyears” is a lyrically dense tune filled with clever wordplays and small-town references. The Georgia natives sings of life’s ups and downs, emphasizing that it’s the simple joys that make it all worth living. In the song’s chorus, Denning shares this message with his fans, using the double meaning of “Goodyears” and the highway as a metaphor to life.

“Rollin’ on them Goodyears / Flyin’ on them high times /  Circle K cold beer / Growin’ up on a Friday night … Just keep on doin’ how we do it to get through it ‘round here / Rollin’ on them Goodyears”

The mellow guitar strings throughout the song make for a relaxing and authentically country listening experience. Denning paints a mental picture of life growing up in a small town with lyrical nods to “Friday nights”, “Jackpot scratch-offs”, and “Two-lane” roads, bringing forward memories and connecting with his fans through relatable experiences.

Travis Denning first played this song during live sets in early 2020, where fans felt an instant connection to the smooth and invigorating sound and feel-good message. After generating an initial buzz amongst the live-show listeners, the singer-songwriter officially released the track.

Listeners can all relate that life is full of struggles, hard work, and not-so-good times, but there are also many reasons to celebrate and enjoy the simple highs, which Denning details throughout the song.

“Through the downs and the ups / all the smooth and the rough / Yeah, there’s days where you pray and days where you cuss”

We’re so glad that the Denning officially released the song and can picture this playing on country radio, while cruising on our own “Goodyears.” It’s the perfect uplifting and relatable country jam, and we can’t wait to hear more from the rising artist!

The American Idol star and Louisiana native knows how to deliver music that resonates with his fans. His new song “Other LA” is just another example of his pure and innovative creativity. The song may sound familiar to some fans, who have seen the singer perform the song live or via social media. Hardy also performed the jam during one of our virtual country brunches earlier this month.

“To my home sweet other LA / Everybody brags about the beach / No one seen it in weeks / Nothing but taillight traffic / If you love it that much you can have it / If it was up to these old boots, I’d be back down in Baton Rouge / I know a country boy can survive / But it’s tough for a rodeo guy”

The Best Covers by Luke Combs You Didn’t Know You Needed

Luke Combs covers some of the greatest country music songs in the genre often sharing his reimagined versions with fans via his social media. He is one of the best in the country music world right now and as we anticipate the release of his upcoming deluxe album, What You See Ain’t Always What You Get, we’re sharing some of our favorite songs covered by the superstar singer-songwriter.

“Austin”- Blake Shelton

Back in the beginning of his career, Combs would often cover the song that helped put fellow country superstar Blake Shelton on the mark, “Austin.” Fans can find clips of the singer belting out “Austin” even in 2017; however, earlier this year, Combs reminded fans that he can truly sing anything. His soulful rendition of “Austin” is arguably as good as Shelton’s original.

“Fast Car”- Tracey Chapman

After fans begged him to sing a full version of this song, Combs obliged, and his performance went viral. Combs’ cover is vocally-pleasing, yet effortless. He performed it most recently on one of his quarantine Facebook Lives, and truthfully, we could listen to it all day long.

“The Way I Talk”- Morgan Wallen

Fellow country singer, Morgan Wallen burst onto the scene with his true-blue country tune “The Way I Talk.” As if the stars were aligning, Wallen and Combs shared the stage back on Combs’ headlining tour, and supported one another, singing covers of each other’s songs. Wallen covered “She Got the Best of Me,” while Combs gave a soulful and stripped-down version of “The Way I Talk.”

“What Are You Listening To”- Chris Stapleton

Back in March, Instagram was swirling with the #DeepCutsChallenge. Morgan Wallen challenged Combs and in turn, he covered a song he believed deserved more credit, Chris Stapleton’s “What Are You Listening To.” It is safe to say, Combs’ cover was nothing short of extraordinary.

“Dive”- Ed Sheeran

Interestingly enough, Combs even covered pop-star and songwriter, Ed Sheeran’s song, “Dive” back in 2017. His rendition still pops up on the internet from time to time, even years later. Combs turns Sheeran’s song into a bluesy, goosebump-worthy country song. Combs even recorded the covers at Sound Stage Nashville, as part of a Spotify campaign.

“I Don’t Want This Night To End”- Luke Bryan

It’s hard to remember a time where Luke Combs wasn’t all over the charts and performing at every major venue, but back in 2011, Combs was just another young man, who loved country music. Here’s an old-school cover from the singer of Luke Bryan’s “I Don’t Want This Night To End”. This throwback is just a reminder to all of us that we all have to start somewhere, and of course, that further proves that Combs was born to be a superstar.

As Combs continues to break his own records, we look forward to more new music from him as well as what classic hits he’ll surprise fans with by covering. Luke Combs’ deluxe album, What You See Ain’t Always What You Get is set to release on Friday, October 23rd, and includes five brand new tracks.

Fans can join our Weekly Round-Up e-newsletter here, for the latest in country music and more news about the upcoming Luke Combs release in the coming weeks.

Cody Johnson Reimagines “Dear Rodeo” Featuring Reba

Cody Johnson and Reba McEntire’s version of “Dear Rodeo” is available now on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dig deeper into the track.

Country legend, Reba McEntire joins Texas-native and rising country star, Cody Johnson for a duet of his song, “Dear Rodeo” off his latest album, Ain’t Nothing To It. This song can be interpreted literally—a former rodeo competitor who walked away from the sport a while ago, but still misses the joy and rush it brought into his life—and figuratively—the rodeo being a metaphor for a former lover. McEntire’s backs Johnson until her voice takes center stage in the song’s final verse.

Dear Rodeo / I’d like to think you miss me too / But I know you don’t / Oh, but that don’t change the past / And that don’t change the truth / I’m still in love with you / Dear Rodeo

Cody Johnson, Reba McEntire, Dear Rodeo

Reba McEntire and Cody Johnson

Johnson has been singing and playing guitar since he was twelve years old. He built up a large fanbase in Texas and had several top-ten hits on Texas radio before signing with Warner Music Nashville in 2018. McEntire is not only a popular counterpart for Johnson to drive streams and sales, she fits the role well, as she is a former rodeo competitor herself who won two buckles barrel racing. Her music career launched when Red Steagall discovered her singing the national anthem at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City.

Following a University of Alabama Football Game on Saturday, October 3rd, 2020, several fan videos were released of Morgan Wallen seen partying, not wearing a mask, and surrounded by groups of people in several different locations throughout the night. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to sweep the nation, many fans and critics alike took to social media to express their concern for Wallen’s safety and the safety of others.

While few suspected he would be pulled from the prestigious show, Wallen took to Instagram Wednesday, October 7th to formally announce that he got a call that he will no longer be allowed to perform on the show this Saturday. Speaking directly to the camera from his New York City hotel room just 72-hours before what would have been his debut Saturday Night Live appearance, Wallen emotionally addressed the situation. “My actions this past weekend were pretty shortsighted and they have obviously affected my long term goals and my dreams. I respect the show’s decision because I know that I put them in jeopardy. I take ownership for this. I’d like to apologize to SNL, to my fans, to my team, for bringing me these opportunities and I let them down.” He continues, “I wish I could have made country music, and my fans proud this Saturday.”

The lyrics paint the scene of a guy hanging out in a bar after a tough week and everything changes when he sees the girl that changes everything.

Real Dang Good Rayne Johnson

“She said boy do you maybe want to dance with me // Looks like you could use a little company // I could turn your night around // How does that sound // I said good, good, real dang good // Yeah, ‘cause that night didn’t feel right until I saw her pretty face // We were dancing, it was crazy // I felt like you knew me baby // That night was looking bad until I saw her // But it got good, good, real dang good”

“Real Dang Good” is a song everyone can relate to, especially in this day and time,” Johnson says in a recent press release. “We all have those tough weeks and need someone or something to pick us up, and who better than that girl (or guy) you didn’t even know you were lookin’ for?”

The Ohio native is still fairly new to the country music scene. He’s opened for Riley Green, Hunter Hayes, and Randy Houser and has released three singles in the last two years. “Front Seat” landed on both the Mediabase Country Aircheck and Billboard Country Airplay charts and was streamed more than 24 million times.

The singer-songwriter is the latest act to sign a deal with Mickey Jack Cones, President, and COO of Verge Records—the label arm of global music company ONErpm.

Written By: Nicolle Galyon – The Hit Songs You Know, by the Songwriters You May Not Know

Nicolle Galyon is the first songwriter that we are highlighting in a new series, “Written By: The Hit Songs You Know, By The Songwriters You May Not Know.”

Nicolle Galyon Songs

Nicolle Galyon

Over the years, country music has changed in many ways. No matter how the trends sonically differ, one thing always remains consistent: solid songwriting. Songwriters are truly the heartbeat behind the genre and the vibrant Music City. Nicolle Galyon, the insanely talented hitmaker and record label executive, is one of the most successful and truly artistic writers there is. This month, NYCS is spotlighting Nicolle Galyon’s discography – specifically, focusing on 10 of the songs that she’s written, produced, and on occasion, sung.

1. “Automatic”, Miranda Lambert (Platinum)

Galyon had a handful of cuts before this one-of-a-kind Miranda Lambert cut, but it wasn’t until this song that she became one of the most sought-after writers in country music. It’s the song that kickstarted her entire career. The song came to be after a conversation that she, Miranda, and fellow writer Natalie Hemby had in the studio. “That day… we started talking about girls moving to Nashville, and how they get frustrated after five seconds if they don’t have a record deal,” she told iHeartRadio. “We started giving our Nashville testimonies… and from there [the lyrics] sort of fell out.” “Automatic” went on to earn Nicolle her first of many #1’s, as well as her very first ACM award.

2. “I’ve Done Love”, Jana Kramer

Something particularly special about this cut is that not only did Galyon have a hand in writing it, but it’s the first song she produced. “I’m so proud of this song it hurts,” she shared in an Instagram post back in 2017. While this song never hit radio airwaves, it has over 3 million streams alone on Spotify, and it’s clear that this song means a lot to fans.

3. “It Ain’t Pretty”, Lady A (Golden) + Martina McBride (Reckless)

Prior to her breakthrough hit with Miranda Lambert, Galyon scored a cut on Lady A’s monster album Golden. While never a single, it’s one of the band’s most popular deep cuts. Getting one cut is a big deal, but she struck gold when three years later, Martina McBride recorded it for her 13th studio album, Reckless. Later that year, Nicolle released her very first EP, The Worktapes. which features the demo of “It Ain’t Pretty”.

4. “All The Pretty Girls”, Kenny Chesney (Cosmic Hallelujah)

Every songwriter has a bucket-list cut, and for Galyon, it was Kenny Chesney. “Dear Nicolle in line at Fan Fair to meet Kenny Chesney in 1997: Just wait,” she captioned an Instagram post. “You’re gonna have a Kenny Chesney single in 2017. Sincerely, Your Wildest Dreams.” The feel-good jam went on to be her third number one and one of Chesney’s most popular singles from the last decade. Galyon co-wrote the song with Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Osborne, the latter of which cut the demo and released it in honor of the 2018 AIMP Awards.

5. “Heartland”, Hailey Whitters (The Dream)

One of Nicolle Galyon’s most defining characteristics is her Heartland roots. Born and raised in Kansas, there are few things that make her feel more proud. Hailey Whitters, who also happens to be Galyon’s all-female label, Songs & Daughters, latest artist signee, released the ethereal “Heartland”, which Gaylon had a hand in writing. “I’m so glad Hailey came along and keeps letting me right straight into midwest bliss with her,” she wrote on Instagram describing the song. It’s a true testament to who Galyon is at her core.

6. “Consequences”, Camila Cabello (Camila)

Nashville is one of the rare cities where artists really do take into account outside cuts. In the pop world, they happen, but less frequently. “Consequences”, is a stunning piano ballad that Galyon wrote alongside Amy Wadge and Emily Weisband. “So glad Ed Sheeran pitched the piano-vocal to Camila on the other side of the friggin globe without our knowing it,” she wrote on Instagram. “Consequences” went on to win an iHeartRadio award and became Galyon’s first official pop hit.

7. “Boy”, Lee Brice (Lee Brice)

“They say write what you know,” Galyon captioned an Instagram post about Lee Brice’s “Boy”. Co-written with Jon Nite is an incredibly special love song from a parent to a son. “It was the last song I wrote before I had my son… that song was really honest and powerful for me personally,” she told Sounds Like Nashville in an interview. Brice released it as his first single from his self-titled album, and although it’s a song that didn’t hit #1, it will always be one of the most memorable and important songs in his catalog.

8. “homecoming queen?”, Kelsea Ballerini (kelsea + ballerini)

The lead single from Kelsea Ballerini’s third studio album, kelsea, was the evocative “homecoming queen?”, a song less about actual homecoming queens and more about how hard putting on a front for everyone around you truly is. “It’s about waking up to yourself. And making sure the outside matches the inside,” she shared on Instagram. Kelsea and Nicolle collaborate often together, and in some ways, it’s like Kelsea’s artistry is an extension of Nicolle’s writing. They did a stunning rendition of the song for YouTube Music, and it’s incredibly touching.

9. “House With No Mirrors”, Sasha Sloan (Only Child)

Another one of Galyon’s dream writes was with indie-pop artist Sasha Sloan, and the week before the world shut down due to COVID, that write happened, and “House With No Mirrors” was born. It’s a soft, yet gut-punching song about battling body and self-esteem issues and wishing you lived in a house with no mirrors so you didn’t have to see your reflection. Galyon herself has battled these issues. “When the world came to a screeching halt this year, I realized the war I started back in 2003 with my body had not yet been won,” she posted on Instagram. It’s such an important message that isn’t discussed in songs enough, and Galyon was brave enough to go there, and hopefully help other young girls down the line.

10. “Tequila”, Dan + Shay (Dan + Shay)

Perhaps the most defining moment in Galyon’s songwriting career so far was the release of Dan + Shay’s powerful smash “Tequila”. Although a fantastic song, it’s nearly impossible to have imagined that it would have the life that it does – over 300 million streams, GRAMMY & ACM nominations, radio airplay in multiple genres… the list goes on.

Since the release of “Tequila”, Galyon has continued to write some of the greatest songs of the last decade, and it’s clear she’s just getting started.
