Written By: Nicolle Galyon – The Hit Songs You Know, by the Songwriters You May Not Know

Nicolle Galyon is the first songwriter that we are highlighting in a new series, “Written By: The Hit Songs You Know, By The Songwriters You May Not Know.”

Nicolle Galyon Songs

Nicolle Galyon

Over the years, country music has changed in many ways. No matter how the trends sonically differ, one thing always remains consistent: solid songwriting. Songwriters are truly the heartbeat behind the genre and the vibrant Music City. Nicolle Galyon, the insanely talented hitmaker and record label executive, is one of the most successful and truly artistic writers there is. This month, NYCS is spotlighting Nicolle Galyon’s discography – specifically, focusing on 10 of the songs that she’s written, produced, and on occasion, sung.

1. “Automatic”, Miranda Lambert (Platinum)

Galyon had a handful of cuts before this one-of-a-kind Miranda Lambert cut, but it wasn’t until this song that she became one of the most sought-after writers in country music. It’s the song that kickstarted her entire career. The song came to be after a conversation that she, Miranda, and fellow writer Natalie Hemby had in the studio. “That day… we started talking about girls moving to Nashville, and how they get frustrated after five seconds if they don’t have a record deal,” she told iHeartRadio. “We started giving our Nashville testimonies… and from there [the lyrics] sort of fell out.” “Automatic” went on to earn Nicolle her first of many #1’s, as well as her very first ACM award.

2. “I’ve Done Love”, Jana Kramer

Something particularly special about this cut is that not only did Galyon have a hand in writing it, but it’s the first song she produced. “I’m so proud of this song it hurts,” she shared in an Instagram post back in 2017. While this song never hit radio airwaves, it has over 3 million streams alone on Spotify, and it’s clear that this song means a lot to fans.

3. “It Ain’t Pretty”, Lady A (Golden) + Martina McBride (Reckless)

Prior to her breakthrough hit with Miranda Lambert, Galyon scored a cut on Lady A’s monster album Golden. While never a single, it’s one of the band’s most popular deep cuts. Getting one cut is a big deal, but she struck gold when three years later, Martina McBride recorded it for her 13th studio album, Reckless. Later that year, Nicolle released her very first EP, The Worktapes. which features the demo of “It Ain’t Pretty”.

4. “All The Pretty Girls”, Kenny Chesney (Cosmic Hallelujah)

Every songwriter has a bucket-list cut, and for Galyon, it was Kenny Chesney. “Dear Nicolle in line at Fan Fair to meet Kenny Chesney in 1997: Just wait,” she captioned an Instagram post. “You’re gonna have a Kenny Chesney single in 2017. Sincerely, Your Wildest Dreams.” The feel-good jam went on to be her third number one and one of Chesney’s most popular singles from the last decade. Galyon co-wrote the song with Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Osborne, the latter of which cut the demo and released it in honor of the 2018 AIMP Awards.

5. “Heartland”, Hailey Whitters (The Dream)

One of Nicolle Galyon’s most defining characteristics is her Heartland roots. Born and raised in Kansas, there are few things that make her feel more proud. Hailey Whitters, who also happens to be Galyon’s all-female label, Songs & Daughters, latest artist signee, released the ethereal “Heartland”, which Gaylon had a hand in writing. “I’m so glad Hailey came along and keeps letting me right straight into midwest bliss with her,” she wrote on Instagram describing the song. It’s a true testament to who Galyon is at her core.

6. “Consequences”, Camila Cabello (Camila)

Nashville is one of the rare cities where artists really do take into account outside cuts. In the pop world, they happen, but less frequently. “Consequences”, is a stunning piano ballad that Galyon wrote alongside Amy Wadge and Emily Weisband. “So glad Ed Sheeran pitched the piano-vocal to Camila on the other side of the friggin globe without our knowing it,” she wrote on Instagram. “Consequences” went on to win an iHeartRadio award and became Galyon’s first official pop hit.

7. “Boy”, Lee Brice (Lee Brice)

“They say write what you know,” Galyon captioned an Instagram post about Lee Brice’s “Boy”. Co-written with Jon Nite is an incredibly special love song from a parent to a son. “It was the last song I wrote before I had my son… that song was really honest and powerful for me personally,” she told Sounds Like Nashville in an interview. Brice released it as his first single from his self-titled album, and although it’s a song that didn’t hit #1, it will always be one of the most memorable and important songs in his catalog.

8. “homecoming queen?”, Kelsea Ballerini (kelsea + ballerini)

The lead single from Kelsea Ballerini’s third studio album, kelsea, was the evocative “homecoming queen?”, a song less about actual homecoming queens and more about how hard putting on a front for everyone around you truly is. “It’s about waking up to yourself. And making sure the outside matches the inside,” she shared on Instagram. Kelsea and Nicolle collaborate often together, and in some ways, it’s like Kelsea’s artistry is an extension of Nicolle’s writing. They did a stunning rendition of the song for YouTube Music, and it’s incredibly touching.

9. “House With No Mirrors”, Sasha Sloan (Only Child)

Another one of Galyon’s dream writes was with indie-pop artist Sasha Sloan, and the week before the world shut down due to COVID, that write happened, and “House With No Mirrors” was born. It’s a soft, yet gut-punching song about battling body and self-esteem issues and wishing you lived in a house with no mirrors so you didn’t have to see your reflection. Galyon herself has battled these issues. “When the world came to a screeching halt this year, I realized the war I started back in 2003 with my body had not yet been won,” she posted on Instagram. It’s such an important message that isn’t discussed in songs enough, and Galyon was brave enough to go there, and hopefully help other young girls down the line.

10. “Tequila”, Dan + Shay (Dan + Shay)

Perhaps the most defining moment in Galyon’s songwriting career so far was the release of Dan + Shay’s powerful smash “Tequila”. Although a fantastic song, it’s nearly impossible to have imagined that it would have the life that it does – over 300 million streams, GRAMMY & ACM nominations, radio airplay in multiple genres… the list goes on.

Since the release of “Tequila”, Galyon has continued to write some of the greatest songs of the last decade, and it’s clear she’s just getting started.

Kylie Morgan Releases “Cuss A Little” Featuring Walker Hayes

Kylie Morgan’s new song, “Cuss A Little” features Walker Hayes and is available now on all streaming platforms. Written by Morgan and Hayes, take a look below as we dig deeper into the track.

Yoga-enthusiast turned country singer-songwriter, Kylie Morgan released “Cuss A Little” featuring Walker Hayes on Friday, October 2nd. Produced by Ben Johnson and the Grammy-award winning, Shane McAnally, this track reveals Morgan’s honest, yet sometimes contradicting personality.

I’m just human, buried in denial / I judge people and I read the bible / I drink too much but my body is a temple / I love Jesus but I cuss just a little

“Cuss A Little” is an anthem for every young adult trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be. She discusses all the things she stands for but cannot follow-up on. For example, she wants to be straight up with people but continues to talk about them behind their backs. Hayes, who co-wrote the song with her, backs Morgan’s humble voice along with a simple, acoustic melody. This is one of the first songs she wrote upon moving to Nashville at the age of nineteen.

Kylie Morgan’s New Song, ft. Walker Hayes, “Cuss A Little” is out now, October 2nd

“Cuss A Little’ is truthfully me, no filter,” Morgan shared in a recent press release. “This song has always meant a lot to me and I’m so glad I finally get to share it with others.”

Hayes adds, “I can’t believe Kylie was in her teens when we wrote this.  Even crazier how it has stood the test of time.  I know this song and the way she and Shane were able to bring it together will most definitely meet people where they are and make them pull over. I did when I heard it the first time.”

Morgan began writing songs in her hometown of Newcastle, Oklahoma when she was only 12 years old. A little over a year ago, she signed with UMG Nashville and the SMACKSongs team, under the guidance McAnally and Josh Osborne. Earlier this year, she released her fun, yet vulnerable track, “Break Things,” which continues to accumulate impressive streaming numbers. Learn more about Morgan in our Swag Spotlight.

Luke Combs Releases Acoustic “Cold As You” In Weekly Series

Luke Combs released an acoustic version of “Cold As You” from his upcoming What You See Ain’t Always What You Get Deluxe album. Every Monday over the past three weeks, Combs has taken to social media to perform an acoustic snippet of a new track from the album in a new Weekly Series until its official release on October 23rd. Watch “Cold As You” below:

“Cold As You” is a song about the type of bar that helps mend broken hearts. Combs paints the picture of the ambiance, like how “Whiskey River” is playing on the jukebox, how the bathrooms stalls are covered in phone numbers, but most importantly, how the beer they serve is almost as cold as the one who left them.

Good-time numbers on the stall door / Picture of you on the dartboard / Them cinderblock walls ain’t ever been cleaned / Still not as dirty as you done me

Brent Cobb: Keep ‘Em On They Toes Album Review

Brent Cobb’s new album, ‘Keep ‘Em On They Toes’ is available now, October 2nd. Take a listen and check out our album review below as we dig a little deeper into the collection of songs.

Grammy award-winning, singer-songwriter Brent Cobb pays homage to his indie heritage in his latest album Keep ‘Em on They Toes. The project was released on his own label, Ol’ Buddy Records, via Thirty Tigers. The collection was produced by Brad Cook, who has produced artists to the likes of Bon Iver, Waxahatchie, and more, and is an assemblage of ten new songs including the lively title track.

“Keep ‘Em on They Toes” is a lighthearted, earthy tune with reminiscences of a Jack Johnson ambiance. Written with his wife Layne, it’s a tale of eluding the woes when ignorance is bliss. The song coincides with a music video directed by Christian Hanson which documents the full circle of a relationship.

“Shut Up and Sing” trails off of the album’s opener and takes what some people order and turns it upside down. Taking a remark often made towards successful artists who speak out, Cobb alludes to the implication that every so often it’s okay for the artistic connotation to take the lead. Sometimes the music just does the talking. He insinuates at the advice given not to talk, so he took it.. and made his voice hear another way…

“I wondered what I would shut and sing // And then it hit me // Lord have mercy, all us earthly fools // There’s poison in our rhetoric and bullets in our schools. // So I sing, what the hell is going on here? // Let’s take these blinders off our eyes and pull the cotton from our ears.”

“Good Times and Good Lovin’” is a lot less cheeky than the prior and embellishes a swing-enticed rhythm and sensual keys. Hey, good times and good loving may not last forever, as told, but we sure as hell can keep this song playing all night.

“Sometimes I’m A Clown” is another sultry, slow groove of the bunch encompassing mild instrumentation while “Dust Under My Rug” speeds it up a little. The tempo is raised and makes the dance floor immensely inviting. “Soap Box” is “Shut Up and Sing” 2.0 but more civil. The Ellaville native sings, “Well good god, let’s hop off the soapbox and get along,” while over an abundance of jazz-influenced piano riffs and angelic female harmonics.

“The World Is Ending” is a track that was previously released in June in the depths of the pandemic when everything was still so uncertain. Cobb wrote the track years prior, but with today’s setting, was awfully appropriate to release now.

“Little Stuff”, the album’s final track, calmly concludes the project making it clear that it’s the little things that mean the absolute most.

Overall, Cobb’s Keep ‘Em On They Toes is a must-listen for fans of all genres.

Rascal Flatts Release: Twenty Years of Rascal Flatts The Greatest Hits

Rascal Flatts are celebrating their milestone twentieth year together with the release of ‘Twenty Years of Rascal Flatts The Greatest Hits’, available now.

Twenty Years of Rascal Flatts The Greatest Hits

Twenty Years of Rascal Flatts The Greatest Hits

As promised, despite their announced retirement, Rascal Flatts has continued to give fans something to remember them by this year. Earlier this year they released their EP How They Remember You, and now the famous trio are gifting fans with a new greatest hits record. Twenty Years of Rascal Flatts – The Greatest Hits is quite literally the album version of a typical Rascal Flatts concert setlist.

The trio featured many of their number one singles harking all the way back to the beginning of their bright career. The record is truly a trip down memory lane, as the record begins with their oldest tunes and ends with their most recent hits.

Songs like “I’m Movin’ On,” “These Days,” and “Bless The Broken Road” have become classic country songs to modern-day country fans. We all have a story about when we first heard these nostalgic tunes. “I’m Movin’ On” is one of their first top ten singles off their debut self-titled record, while “These Days” was their lead single off their sophomore record. It was also their first song to reach the top of the charts.

The group’s third studio album Feels Like Today garnered them a five-time platinum-selling record and arguably made Rascal Flatts a household name. The record boasted number one songs like “Bless The Broken Road” and “Fast Cars and Freedom,” which are both obviously included in the new Greatest Hits record.

If the Feels Like Today record made the band a household name, it was their record Me and My Gang that solidified their rise to super-stardom. “What Hurts The Most,” “Life Is A Highway,” and “Stand” all soared to the top of the charts, and we all continue to sing every word of each of those tracks today. Fan-favorite, “Life Is A Highway” is also a track off this killer record.

It is hard to believe that up until this point, we are only half-way through their astonishing career. Songs like “Take Me There,” “Here Comes Goodbye,” and “Easy” continued to elevate their career. In the latter half of their career, Rascal Flatts members Jay, Gary, and Joe continued to give us hits like “Banjo,” “Come Wake Me Up,” and “Changed,” all songs that we will forever be hearing through our speakers.

Ending their career with ten fully-produced and incredible full-length projects, the men of Rascal Flatts made sure to leave us with even more memorable hits that also round out their new Greatest Hits record. “I Like The Sound Of That” and “Yours If You Want It” will continue to be the songs that are played for generations of country music lovers to come.

Thank you Rascal Flatts for the twenty years of musical mastery! We can only hope that we will get to see the band play all these mega-hits one last time.

TWENTY YEARS OF RASCAL FLATTS THE GREATEST HITS TRACKLIST:

  1. I’m Movin’ On
  2. These Days

Brantley Gilbert: Fire & Brimstone (Deluxe Edition) Album Review

Brantley Gilbert’s Fire & Brimstone (Deluxe Edition), available now October 2nd, includes two new tracks “Old Friends” and “Hard Days”. Check out more about the special project below.
Brantley Gilbert's Fire & Brimstone (Deluxe Edition)

Brantley Gilbert’s Fire & Brimstone (Deluxe Edition) is available now, October 2nd

Brantley Gilbert, the singer-songwriter behind hit projects like the 2011 number one smash “Country Must Be Country Wide” and 2019 collaboration with Lindsay Ell “What Happens In A Small Town”, has released a deluxe edition to his latest album Fire and Brimstone. Two additional songs are featured, which allows the tracklist to extend the originally sizable project even more so with a new total of seventeen tracks.

Oftentimes, with each of Gilbert’s albums, he carries out these large collections of songs with his soft yet raspy tone among sentimental words and head-banging country party anthems, and Fire and Brimstone is no different.

One of the two new tracks, “Hard Days” may already be familiar to country fans as it was released back in June. This song focuses on experiencing difficult times in order to feel and, essentially, deserve the good days.

The second addition to the album, “Old Friends” follows the same approach while reflecting on the good old days in relation to where you stand today. More specifically, the song is a shout out to friends who have been the reason for specific memories and enjoyable experiences. The lyrics take an intriguing perspective on maintaining long-term relationships in order to cherish such times with those people who have stayed around since “you can’t make old friends” and “you can’t turn back time”.

Fire & Brimstone (Deluxe Edition) is a continuation of Gilbert’s well-known style that consists of unexpected melodies and heartfelt dedications that portray an attractive vulnerability. Innocence and charm are readily and openly laid out through countless ballads. At the same time, songs such as “Fire’t Up” successfully achieve a hardcore country song that gets the crowd fired up.

Who Is Manny Blu? The Story Behind His Journey to Country Music

Manny Blu’s new music “Old Money” and “Sink” are now available as prior releases to New Ink, his EP that comes out November 13. Read more about his music here.

Manny Blu, a performer from Montreal who previously entertained viewers in the ring as an MMA fighter, has traded in his speed bag for a guitar and a concert venue. And after a 2019 debut with Leave It Like It Is that featured former singles such as “X on My Heart” and “Like It Like That”, Blu and his team are set to release a new project titled New Ink on November 13. Three singles are available now, “Born To Ride”, “Old Money” and “Sink”, to introduce listeners to this new era of music that is said to be “louder” and “bigger” than the first collection.

“I’m really starting to find the right mix between country and blues — rock, blues and rock ’n roll,” said Blu, our Swag Spotlight artist this week. “There are some influences in all of that, and finding a way to bring it all together in one EP is a fun challenge. And, I think I’ve done that with this one.”

Pulling from influences such as B.B King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and John Mayer, the music is both intentional and accidental. Blu mentions that he became a country artist “by default” once he started playing guitar and his friends requested songs relating to the genre. Though he quickly learned and mentioned in a press release, that “there’s a culture and a vibe to country music that’s like nothing else”.

And “Sink”, his latest single release, speaks to that truth. A song that practically demands to be played over speakers in a honky tonk bar with a crowded dance floor made up entirely of cowboy boots and fringe jackets. “Eric Church is a big influence for me, too, and he’s just doing whatever he wants,” Blu revealed. “And when a song like “Sink” comes along, it’s hard to turn it down since it’s such a good song and whether it fits exactly what I wanted or not, I didn’t want to pass it up.”

The performer who has learned to roll with the punches after a series of obstacles including a sports injury to the quad and struggling to succeed in school with dyslexia, Blu has proved himself time and time again. Now, with new music ready to hit all media platforms, he is ready to get back on stage and perform. Though, like all musicians, he has hit a wall. “…moving forward I would like to play at least a couple of shows before the end of 2020,” the Jimmie Hendrix enthusiast stated. “But, if we don’t get that opportunity, then the plan is to put on our work boots for 2021 and play as many shows as we can.”

As we continue to find that happy medium in between safety and live entertainment, check out Blu’s first single “Born To Ride” to New Ink here, a project that was artistically produced to follow the same energy of a live performance.

Fans can join our Weekly Round-Up e-newsletter here, for the latest in country music and more news about future Manny Blu releases.

Devin Dawson Releases “Range Rover” + Announces New EP, ‘The Pink Slip’

Devin Dawson’s new single, “Range Rover” is available now, October 2nd on all streaming platforms. The track comes with a surprise announcement from Dawson who revealed that he will be releasing a brand new EP, The Pink Slip due out January 15th, 2021. Take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the new track from the forthcoming project.

Devin Dawson’s new single “Range Rover” is what he does best. Dawson delivers a cheeky, catchy, and fun new jam for fans who are anxiously awaiting another full-length project. Ironically following his latest single, “I Got A Truck,” “Range Rover” also uses car imagery to depict an enticing story.

Dawson is a master wordsmith, and it is clear on this brand new single. “Range Rover” depicts the story of a girl, who everyone thinks is perfect, but really, she is a gold digger. Without saying it per se, Dawson finds a way to convey that message pretty clearly through the hooky song.

The Warner Music Nashville/Atlantic Records recording artist sings about the girl preferring the fancier side of life, and later, admits, that he needs a girl that can hang and isn’t necessarily expecting the finer things of life. He also talks about his beloved pick-up truck.

“I’m looking for a girl that’s fine if I drive a pickup // And she does not mind ridin’ in it // With the windows down crankin’ Keith Whitley loud next to me // I’m looking for a girl who sees past blown speakers // And a broke AC and a bench seat // With a quarter-million miles on the motor // But she was looking for that Range Rover // She just wants that, just wants that Range Rover”

With a killer production to back the lyrics, Dawson creates something innovative and unique. You can really picture the singer-songwriter just jamming with his friends, as this song came to fruition. We love Devin Dawson’s unapologetic way of creating. His new single, “Range Rover” is just another notch on his belt!
