Last night, New York country fans got to experience an intimate show at Mercury Lounge in lower Manhattan with two extremely talented singer-songwriters, Hannah Ellis and Walker Hayes. Prior to the show, Ellis joined NYCountry Swag for a Live Swag Session where she answered questions and sang two songs, check out the Swag Session below. This was Ellis’ first time opening for Hayes and judging by the way the crowd responded it hopefully won’t be the last. She started the night by saying, “How we doing New York!? I’m so excited to be here, my name is Hannah Ellis! I’m excited to be opening up for Walker Hayes! We are going to have some fun tonight, we are going to get you all warmed up!” Kicking off her set with the first song from her self-titled EP, “Temporary Feelings”.

The singer-songwriter got the crowd going by throwing in some cover songs to get everyone in the singing mood. She covered Lady Antebellum’s hit “Downtown” as well as The Band Perry’s “Better Dig Two” before going 90s R&B singing “No Diggity” by Blackstreet, getting the crowd excited for what’s to come. Before going any further, she took a moment in her set to talk about songwriting saying, “Selfishly we also get to go in there and kind of pour out our hearts and talk about where we’ve been and what we’re dealing with…it’s almost therapeutic for us and it’s just been really special to watch people kind of respond to this song.” Slowing down her set, she performed her unreleased song “Past The Past,” showing off her incredible vocals and vulnerability.

As her set was coming to an end, she couldn’t leave the stage without singing her current single “Home and A Hometown,” saying “It’s one of my favorite songs that I’ve ever written, it’s just my life story, it’s where I come from, where I ended up and where I plan to go.” The entire audience sang back the lyrics, making Ellis emotional saying, “I’m going to go cry about that later…Y’all are incredible!” Making her last two songs count, Ellis kept it upbeat singing her debut single “ILY So What” and closing out her set with “Friends Like These”.

Next up was the headliner himself, Walker Hayes, kicking off his set with his song “Prescriptions.” A couple of songs in, Hayes started talking to the crowd saying, “I was saying to the little VIP thing we did earlier, how much fans mean to me and y’all need to know, thank y’all for showing up, thank you for knowing words to songs that are only on 8Tracks not even albums…it’s been an incredible year for us, this show and our last show marks new material, we got new music coming out and I’m excited…but we still do the oldies but goodies.” Hayes performed 12 songs, covering his hits including fan favorites, “Beautiful,” “Beckett,” “Lela’s Stars”, and “Dollar Store.”

Keeping up the energy, the singer-songwriter performed his brand new single “90’s Country” for the crowd.  Read our exclusive interview with Hayes where he discusses the writing process for the song here.  As the night continued, Hayes surprised the crowd by bringing out opener Hannah Ellis for his song, “Halloween.” The two artists, took the stage, combining their talents to create one perfect duet. As the night was nearing the end, Hayes continued to get personal, telling everyone about his time working at Costco, having six kids, and the man who inspired his personal and emotional single “Craig”.  Be sure to take a look back at our Live Swag Session with Walker Hayes below.

As the night came to the end, Hayes said, “Let’s break it down…this song went Platinum last year just like I hope “90’s Country” will, let’s go crazy, feel free!” singing his hit song “You Broke Up With Me”. When it was time for the last song of the night, Hayes thanked the crowd for coming out and singing along, “This is how we go out”,  singing the song “Shut Up Kenny” about his favorite artist of all time, Kenny Chesney.

American Music Awards

Last night the 2018 American Music Awards, hosted by Tracee Ellis Ross, aired live on ABC. The American Music Awards is the world’s largest fan-voted awards show, honoring artists in multiple musical genres, including country. Fans had the chance to vote for their favorites, from September 12th to October 4th via Twitter and web voting online. Each nominee listed was based on key fan interactions reflected by Billboard, including radio airplay, streaming, social activity, album, and digital song sales and touring. For those who didn’t tune in to the live broadcast, here’s a recap!

The AMA’s was a big night of music and this year country music was represented by Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini, Thomas Rhett, Kane Brown, Florida Georgia Line, and Jesse James Decker; who took part of the pre-show red carpet as well as being the Subaru Correspondent during the show. The first award of the night was presented by country duo, Florida Georgia Line and their “Meant to Be” duet partner, Bebe Rexha.  Together they announced Cardi B as the Favorite Artist in the Rap/Hip-Hop category.  As the night went on we got to see more of our fan favorites take the stage to present awards and introduce other artists. Grammy-nominated artist, Kelsea Ballerini, and EDM-Pop duo, The Chainsmokers, introduced Post Malone and Ty Dolla Sign to the stage for their performance. While later in the evening platinum-selling country artist, Kane Brown had the honor to present favorite album Soul/R&B to XXXTENTACION’s family after his untimely death.

Throughout the night, fans of country music were on the edge of their seats waiting to see which of their favorites won in the country music categories. The first category announced was Favorite Female Artist.  Thomas Rhett presented this award to the queen of country herself, Carrie Underwood, winning the category for the fourth year in a row, making this her 13th AMA award. She went up to the stage thanking God, her incredible team and of course the fans, saying “Tonight is all about the fans! Thank you so much, you’ve have shown so much love and support for me…you guys mean the world to all of us, just thank you so much!” The next award of the night was Favorite Male Artist in the country category. First time nominee, Kane Brown took home the award, winning his first ever AMA award. Brown came up on stage saying, “First off I feel like I’m about to pass out” then went on thanking the fans and everybody who helped him win. This wasn’t the end to Brown’s night, he went on a streak,  winning all the awards he was nominated for, taking home Favorite Song for his single “Heaven” and Favorite Album for his self-titled record. Last but not least the award for Favorite Duo or Group was given off-air to Florida Georgia Line, closing out the awards for the country categories.

As the night was coming to an end, Carrie Underwood stole the show with her stunning performance of her new song “Spinning Bottles” off her brand new album Cry Pretty. Underwood took to the stage, right after she won Favorite Female Country Artist, showing everyone watching how deserving she is. She chose to sing one of her more heartbreaking songs, appearing in a beautiful red grown surrounded by candles. Her performance was extremely intimate, showing her emotions with every note she hit, leaving the crowd in complete awe. Underwood’s flawless delivery was one for the books, giving one of the best performances of the night.

The AMA winner gave everyone a taste of what to expect from her at her concerts and luckily as New Yorkers, we can experience The Cry Pretty Tour 360 with special guests Maddie & Tae and Runaway June at the iconic Madison Square Garden on October 2, 2019. While we have to wait a year to see Underwood, luckily we New Yorkers have the chance to see Kelsea Ballerini this month on the Graffiti U tour with Keith Urban at the Barclays Center on October 27th. Three-time AMA winner, Kane Brown will be playing a one-night-only exclusive album release show at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden on November 7th.

Following a successful year of live shows and number one singles, Old Dominion is ready to begin the next era of their career with a brand new single and headlining tour, both entitled “Make It Sweet.”  Co-written by all five members of the group (Brad Tursi, Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, Geoff Sprung, Whit Sellers) and Shane McAnally, this upbeat and infectious single is the perfect blend of a love story and a take on the imperative phrase “life is short.”

The guys shared how unexpectedly and effortlessly it came to be in a note via the band’s Twitter account, check out the Tweet below.

Make It Sweet

The band sings in the chorus, “’Cause I’m stuck on you, you’re stuck on me / I never gotta wonder where my honey be / I ain’t saving all my sugar for a Saturday night / Seven days a week I got an appetite / Sunsets like a tangerine, let’s find a road we’ve never seen / Don’t waste another mile or a minute not kissing me / Life is short, make it sweet”

The tune precedes more music to come from the Academy of Country Music award-winning group.  Along with the song’s release is a brand new music video to go along with it, displaying young couples reveling in each other’s company upon some majestic scenery which concludes in a mountainside house party with the band.  Tursi, Ramsey, Rosen, Sprung, and Sellers had one more surprise in store for fans this week: a winter headlining arena tour. Kicking off on January 18, 2019, in Chicago, IL, the twenty-four date tour will run through April 27, 2019, ending in San Jose, CA. Dierks Bentley Debuts “Burning Man” Music Video Featuring Brothers Osborne

Platinum-selling country superstar, Dierks Bentley, has released the scorching official music video for his latest top 20 single “Burning Man,” featuring Grammy-nominated country duo Brothers Osborne.  Featured on Bentley’s ninth studio album, The Mountain, “Burning Man” was penned by Bobby Pinson and Luke Dick. This song depicts the idea of being a walking contradiction and the growth of the human spirit.

Partially filmed at the Salton Sea in the California desert, director and collaborator Wes Edwards combined the jagged terrain and stunning ocean views with a glimpse of the singer-songwriter’s tour life which executed the song’s essence. In a recent press release, Bentley said, “This song is a personal reflection and it was important to me that you feel that with the video.”

Though shooting this video for “Burning Man” was no walk in the park, Bentley was pleased with the way it turned out. “The Bros and I flew out to the desert in July to shoot this…several people on the crew had heat strokes, two cars got stuck in the sand and we had to have a rattlesnake wrangler with us at all times…but we got the shots!” shared Bentley in a recent press release.  “Burning Man” is up for a 2018 CMA Award for Musical Event of the Year. Additionally, the multi-platinum singer-songwriter received two other nominations for Male Vocalist of the Year and Album of the Year for The Mountain.

Bentley will wrap up his ‘Mountain High Tour’ with Brothers Osborne and LANCO this upcoming weekend in Southern California. Visit https://www.dierks.com/ for further information and follow Bentley on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for updates and future announcements.

NYCS First Impression: Will Hoge Releases ‘My American Dream”

Will Hoge

In his latest album release, My American Dream Will Hoge has plenty to tell us as he takes us through eight tracks of powerful storytelling where his songs stand as a true testament to what is going on in the world we live in today. Hoge’s songwriting has earned him multiple country music nominations, and it is no surprise My American Dream is an album that must be played all the way through. His thought-provoking and daring lyrics continue to impress after his last album Anchors debuted in 207.

He holds nothing back as his lyrics depict political views right from the beginning with opening track “Gilded Walls.” In one particular verse, Hoge says “And I work two jobs and raise a family, while you’re living on everything your daddy left behind, and it’s clear you don’t care about the folks down here, inside your gilded walls that shine.” With specific references to school shootings and air pollution, Hoge leaves no stone unturned when it comes to controversial topics.

Referencing our future, in the second track titled “Stupid Kids,” Hoge sings “You’re the only ones that are ever gonna make things change” and encourages youth to have a voice, to not quit and to keep marching on because the current generation has not figured it out yet. One song that stands out on My American Dream is “Thoughts and Prayers” where Hoge continues his lyrical protest; a somber acoustic ballad about people dying by gun violence and politicians not doing anything about it. He makes us all question how many times we can give our condolences after a loved one is lost and in the end, nothing changes.

Other highlights of the album and expressive lyrics are songs such as the title track, “My American Dream” and “The Illegal Line,” which brings light to small businesses shutting down due to production overseas and border patrol regulation. Hoge’s album has a country/rock bluesy vibe that will reel you into exactly what he is feeling and all of his gutsy emotions are heard through each verse. It is definitely a highly engaging album worth listening all the way through.  The album is available everywhere music can be found and he is on tour through December. Listen to the full album below and for tour dates and more information head to willhoge.com

Country Music Songwriters Collaborate on “A Star Is Born”

A Star is Born

Photo Via 2018 WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT INC. AND METRO-GOLDWYN-MAYER PICTURES INC.

“A Star is Born” has already broken box offices records since its release on Friday, October 5th. A memorable collaboration of a country-rock superstar Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) alongside an up and coming pop sensation Ally (Lady Gaga) have taken audience members from all over the country on an emotional, musical ride.

Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut included inspiration from Lukas Nelson, Willie Nelson’s son. Many would wonder, how did this come about? Well, Nelson caught Cooper’s eye back in 2016 playing with his band “Promise of the Real” at a classic rock festival alongside Neil Young. Nelson impressed Cooper so much so that he was asked to be the music producer for the film. Nelson’s country rock influence and years of band experience molded the Hollywood actor into his character, the infamous megastar, Jackson Maine.

It was not long before the working relationship of Lukas Nelson, Bradley Cooper, and Lady Gaga took off. Their chemistry while recording the album and movie was second to none. In an interview with Billboard, Nelson speaks to their dynamic relationship by saying “Its a great collaboration and a beautiful friendship that we have, it seems more like an extended family with those guys.”

Nelson worked with Cooper and co-wrote and produced many of the songs on the soundtrack of “A Star is Born.” One particular track that he takes pride in producing is “Shallow.”  Both the voices of Cooper and Gaga are glorified to create an incredible performance during the movie. It is no surprise that Cooper has already scored his first Billboard Hot 100 hit with this song, as it seems to be the unofficial theme song of the movie.  Other country music songwriters that have songwriting credits on the soundtrack include Hillary Lindsey (“Girl Crush”), Lori McKenna (“Humble and Kind”), and Natalie Hemby (“Automatic”).

“A Star is Born” is truly a blockbuster in the making, with rave reviews and a lot of award nominee buzz. From the studio album to the big screen, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga don’t miss a beat. The powerful lyrics perfectly depict a heartfelt story about addiction, love, and attaining success as a performer in the public eye. Nelson was quoted by Billboard explaining how it all came together, “The way that I approach my songwriting, I think there’s a lot of me in “A Star is Born.” These are songs that I’ve written about my own life, and in a way, they can be applied to any situation.” Be on the lookout for Lukas Nelson and The Promise of Real playing throughout the movie in theatres now!

New York Country Swag 2018 Artist to Watch, Cale Dodds is back with a brand new single, “What We Gonna Do About It”, and a hilarious music video to go along with it. The Warner Bros. / Warner Music Nashville recording artist teased fans all week long via his Twitter and Instagram with stills from the new music video for the track, which was also released Friday (Oct 5.). “What We Gonna Do About It” follows the singer-songwriter’s debut single “Take You Back”.

Penned by Dodds with Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and producer Corey Crowder, the gifted songwriter delivers another jam. The dynamic track is upbeat, fun, and cheeky, fitting the entertainer’s personality to a tee. It’s infectious beat and catchy lyrics will have fans blasting it through their speakers and singing along in no time.

“We’ve been waiting on a night like this / on a night like this / to be right like this / We’ve been looking for a good excuse / yeah a good excuse / to get a little loose / You know we got the whole night / We’ve got the moonlight / Ain’t no better time then now / We’ve been waiting on a night like this / on a night like this / So what we gonna do about it”

The music video, starring the singer and his band, matches the vibes of the track perfectly. Directed by Dustin Haney, the video was created to show fans the level of energy and performance they could expect from one of the singer’s shows. The video showcases Dodds working as a janitor at a nursing home. When he sees a flyer for an open mic night, he runs around the place eagerly convincing his co-workers and real life bandmates to perform with him. The crew ends the video playing for the seniors, which adds great comedic value to the visuals.

Watch the entertaining music video for “What We Gonna Do About It” below.

“What We Gonna Do About It” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music.
