NYCS Swag Spotlight: Tyler Hilton

“I am living in a random dream come true”

Palm Springs, California native Tyler Hilton took some time to chat with our Managing Editor in a recent phone interview about his whirlwind career. If the name sounds familiar, you may remember Hilton starring in a little television show called One Tree Hill as bad-boy recording artist Chris Keller. With his new album City On Fire being released this Friday, he told us about his backstory, growing up being surrounded by music and his almost accidental big movie break.

While he was young, his uncles were all musicians, touring with Fleetwood Mac and George Harrison, so needless to say, music was in his blood and surrounded his childhood. His family would play bluegrass, blues, and California country, influencing his musical talents. “If girls, weren’t obsessed with musicians, who knows if I would have pursued music in my teenage years, I remember I also got into juggling but I don’t juggle anymore,” Hilton laughs. “How lucky that something I loved is so celebrated in our culture.”

When he was just fifteen years old he made the decision to pursue a career as a singer-songwriter and was discovered by a local radio station out in L.A. From there, at just 19 years old after going in to audition to play guitar as a background character, he was cast as Elvis Presley in the Oscar-winning movie Walk The Line. All the while he continued to pursue his music career, which led him to his next project.  He auditioned for a small guest part on One Tree Hill and the rest from there is history. “Before I filmed it, I binge-watched the whole first season and I loved the show,” he tells us. “Imagine watching season 1 in one weekend and then meeting everyone on Monday”. Chris Keller became a character that fans of the show absolutely loved to hate so Hilton was continually written into the show on and off for almost a decade. “I got to hang out with the coolest people ever, we all went through the show becoming huge together and really bonded,” he says of the cast which became like family.

Fast forward, Hilton is gearing up to release a project he says is his favorite record he has ever recorded. City On Fire will be available this Friday (January 18th) and features thirteen tracks that encompass a new blend of genres. When discussing the vibe of the album, Hilton explains he likes to call it “western indie-rock” explaining he is the Venn diagram between Johnny Cash and The Strokes. He wrote the songs during a time of change in his life, his grandfather passed away, a friend passed away, and when California was experiencing terrible wildfires. During our conversation, he explains that the most recent breakout of fires were wreaking havoc through his home state and he could look out the window and see ashes falling from the sky.

City On Fire also features Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum, who Hilton lived with when he first moved to Nashville in 2007. In the same house, Kelley and Hilton lived with Dave Haywood and Jason “Slim” Gambill, who have all had major success with Lady Antebellum. “They were great songwriters, nobody knew who they were, we had a blast drinking, grilling and writing songs together. I thought they were amazing,” he tells us. “They told me about finding a girl on MySpace, talking about Hilary, and they just sounded so good”.  The newly formed band even opened for Hilton once in Nashville and he recalls every record label coming to his show to see them. “After that, they just took off, it’s been so cool watching my old roommates kill it”.

Next up, Hilton is hitting the road to promote City On Fire and will be playing at City Winery in New York City on March 2nd, tickets available here. Pre-order or pre-save City On Fire here and check back on Friday for our First Impression. Be sure to follow Tyler Hilton on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for all upcoming announcements.

NYCS First Impression: Carlton Anderson Self-Titled EP

It’s rare to accidentally discover a new artist and find yourself immediately captivated, wishing there was more than just three songs available on Spotify. However, this was this case when I stumbled upon Arista Nashville artist Carlton Anderson’s debut EP, released January 11. Featuring three songs, the collection is the perfect introduction for Anderson, displaying both a sizable voice, a recognizable style, and a bit of variety.

The Cypress, Texas native released his debut single, “Drop Everything,” in May 2018, and that track is the third in this collection. It’s a fun up-tempo inviting a woman to drop everything, including both her plans and her man to be with him. “I don’t see a ring on your pretty little hand,” Anderson croons confidently, and you have to wonder how many times this line has worked for him. The song, co-written by Rhett Akins, Matthew Dragstem and Ashley Gorley, should certainly make its way to country radio in the near future.

The first track on the EP is “Country Music Made Me Do It,” co-written by Jessi Alexander, and John and T.J. Osborne of Brothers Osborne. The influence of Brothers Osborne is incredibly apparent here stylistically and that’s not a bad thing. Anderson blames country music on why he didn’t make it home to the woman in his life and this tongue-in-cheek explanation is sure to have you singing along. Lyrically and stylistically, this song seems the most familiar, probably due to the fact that it could have easily been on Brothers Osborne’s record. However, Anderson offers his own spin, and the results are fantastic.

Rounding out the EP is “Keep Abilene Beautiful,” a ballad that shows another side of Anderson. The track tells of getting back to where you came from, and it was co-written by Anderson, Tony Lane, and Tom Douglas. On the ballad, his voice is strong and emotive as he pleas, “Keep Abilene beautiful, baby.” Anderson took to his Facebook page to share a bit about the writing process. “I had some memories of some time I spent out in Los Angeles, a place I knew I had no business being, and with a little from each of our stories, the song came together. I threw out a verse that neither one of them hated and just tried not to say anything stupid the rest of the write. It doesn’t matter if you aren’t from Abilene, or if you couldn’t even point it out on a map of Texas. This song is about getting back to where you belong, with the ones you love.”

With a unique mix of contemporary and classic, Carlton Anderson’s debut collection of songs is a must-listen. We expect big things from him, and he’s already well on his way. Anderson made his Grand Ole Opry Debut on the same day he released his EP, January 11. Additionally, he’s currently opening select dates for Aaron Watson and will appear at Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California on Friday, April 20.

Randy Houser Performs “No Stone Unturned” On Good Morning America

In celebration of Randy Houser’s new album Magnolia, he visited Good Morning America to sing his favorite track off the album, “No Stone Unturned.” Houser performed his single on the popular morning show, among a small and intimate crowd. Expecting a fast and upbeat song like others Houser has released, this one is quite the opposite and we are pleasantly surprised.

“No Stone Unturned” has Houser singing about trying to find himself in different places including New Orleans and Los Angeles, leaving no stone unturned. While trying to find himself among all these cities, he leaves no turn unstoned.

“Well, there ain’t no grass gonna grow up under my feet / No tellin’ where I might be / I can always find one hell of a time / While I’m out here lookin’ for me / No stone unturned, no turn unstoned.”

The studio audience clapped along to every beat and were quiet during the more tender moments of the song, cheering once the performance was over. It is not often the performer is surrounded by a studio audience, making a unique crowd for the singer-songwriter.

New York Country Swag is heading to catch Randy Houser tomorrow, Tuesday, January 15th when he performs for Up Close & Country at Stage 17 at Nash FM 94.7. Be on the lookout for a recap of his intimate New York City performance on Wednesday.

Kane Brown Featured on Khalid’s “Saturday Nights” Remix

Kane Brown Khalid

Kane Brown is kicking off 2019 with a bang. Not only did the platinum-selling country singer begin his ‘Live Forever Tour’ last night in Duluth, Georgia, but he also joined R&B star Khalid on a remix of his single, “Saturday Nights” which was released today.

Brown teased fans of this collaboration via his Twitter last week when he posted a video of himself singing along to the original track.  This is not the first time he has ventured off to a different genre for a sure to be hit duet. Last year, he was featured on a remix of pop star, Camila Cabello’s platinum-selling hit “Never Be The Same.”

“Saturday Nights” was originally released in October of 2018 on Khalid’s sophomore project, Suncity. Brown has now taken over the second verse, putting his own spin on this tale of a woman with obstacles standing in the way of her dreams. He sings, “Saturday nights, your works shoes are stilettos / Smell of cheap perfume / Makeup on your face, try to hide the pain / All the lies look like the truth / Deep in your heart, all you want is love / But you never felt good enough / You got wrapped up in other plans / But this ain’t the way the story ends”  Brown later shows off his vocal skills on the bridge and in later choruses. The two voices pair together perfectly, their alluring harmonies add something special the original version did not have.

Brown is not finished with surprise collaborations just yet. On Thanksgiving of last year, he and hit-making producer Marshmello engaged in a Twitter exchange about their “jam” coming out this year. No further details have been announced, but we can sure look forward to hearing more new music from Brown in the near future.

“Saturday Nights REMIX” is now available everywhere you stream or purchase music. Take a listen below.

NYCS First Impression: Randy Houser ‘Magnolia’

Randy Houser Magnolia

After a three year hiatus, country music recording artist Randy Houser has released his fifth studio album entitled Magnolia. The record features perfectly crafted lyrics, instrumentals, and vocals from start to finish. Each of the 12 tracks were co-written and co-produced by the singer, making this his most personal project to date.

The inspiration for the album is just as unique and interesting as each song. According to a recent press release, Houser chose to focus on a different path and sound, setting up camp in East Nashville at his friend and co-producers Keith Gattis’ studio. Each track was heavily influenced by the singer-songwriter’s own experiences, growing up in ‘The Magnolia State’ also known as Mississippi. Every song off the LP feels fresh, organic, and stripped down, keeping Houser’s gritty and commanding vocals at the forefront.

The album begins with Houser’s said to be, favorite song off the record, called “No Stone Unturned”. The track packs a quiet punch, with the cool guitar riffs that are constant, but it’s the entertainer’s vocals and relatable lyrics that really shine. Houser seeks out his path in life, as he reflects on his current journey throughout the song.

The next two songs on the album feature female counterparts. The talented Lucie Silvas lends her vocals to the beautiful “Our Hearts,” while, Hillary Lindsay duets with Houser in the heartbreaking, “What Whiskey Does”. The latter happens to be the lead single off the record. Both songs are polar opposites lyrically and sonically; however, are still two of the more powerful songs off the record.

Houser continues to play with the gamut of emotions in another track entitled “What Leaving Looks Like”. Another poignant break-up song, Houser showcases his artistry, as he deals with the feelings associated with knowing that his lover is leaving and the relationship is coming to an end. The ballad will leave listeners awestruck. “This ain’t my first ride / So come on and make it hurt / Do your best and do your worst / Put me through hell,” he croons.

Other highlights off the record include the honky-tonk inspired song “Whole Lotta Quit.” The upbeat track is radio-friendly, faster-tempo, and feels similar to Houser’s smash hit “How Country Feels,” from his 2013 album of the same name. Additionally, the track “New Buzz” is worth mentioning too. The song features backing vocals and guitar assistance from TJ and John of Brothers Osborne. The catchy chorus and enticing rhythm adds a different dynamic to the record.

Overall, Houser showcases true artistry with Magnolia, proving that he doesn’t need to rely on overproduction to create a great body of work. Houser shared in a recent press release that “Magnolia has been my beacon of light and restored my spirit and my truth. It’s also the most daring and honest piece of work I’ve made in my life,” and that truly shines through on each track.

Magnolia is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Next up, Houser will play a series of shows and appearances in major cities such as Nashville, Los Angeles, and Dallas. Houser hits New York City on January 15th for Nash FM’s 94.7 special Up Close and Country segment at HMH State 17th. Win tickets from NY Country Swag for the exclusive event here.
