2020: Looking Back On The Year Without Live Entertainment

As we hit the one-year mark of the ongoing worldwide COVID-19 pandemic, it’s hard to believe, and saddening to realize, that things have been a new ‘new’ for a whole year now. Aside from the many changes and constant feelings of disappointment, there are certainly some positives to take away from these continuously dark times and as vaccines proceed to roll out, it seems we are finally reaching the light at the end of the tunnel!

The loss of live performances over the past 12 months has significantly affected the music industry from every aspect – whether it be through the loss of employment for the hundreds of people it takes to put on a live show, or the small businesses that support local talent that depend on live shows to attract or promote their business. That being said, country music artists and their fans have become very creative in their efforts to stay in touch and in some cases, have used these unusual times to grow even closer.

In this article, we’re highlighting the many and different ways the country music community has adapted over the past year. While having to go the longest many artists have ever gone without performing live, it was crucial that they come up with new ways to keep their fan bases engaged and along for the crazy and unpredictable 2020 ride. Props to these extraordinary entertainers and their teams who went to great lengths and efforts to stay as connected as possible for the sake of all of us, the fans.

Take a look below at some of our favorite ways that the country music industry has pivoted and adapted in 2020…

1. A New ‘Live’ –

The meaning of ‘live show’ has changed drastically over the last year. What used to mean live, physically in concert or in-person, has been transformed to the virtual and livestream world – quite literally ‘Facebook Live’, ‘Instagram Live’, etc. Artists have taken performances, full concerts, and even single and album release parties to social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, and TikTok. On one hand, you could argue that these streamed events can’t compare to the real thing. However, on the other, these livestreams have made it possible for fans all over the country and the world to share intimate performances and moments with artists that they may otherwise have never had the opportunity to, whether it be a result of geographical or financial restrictions. This new way of sharing performances and new music to fans across the globe all at the same time has created a completely new and special way of connection.

Platforms such as NoonChorus and Yoop have allowed artists to not only extend their reach to fans through these virtual performances, but they’ve also made it possible for artists to continue collecting income throughout the pandemic. Several Nashville venues, specifically those that have proved vital to the function of Music City, such as the Grand Ole Opry, the Bluebird Cafe, and The Listening Room Cafe, have made virtual shows possible for fans everywhere, some even more recently allowing for limited in-person seating.

The historic Opry has ensured that the circle is kept unbroken by welcoming several artists back home including Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, and many more. The Bluebird Cafe hosted Ingrid Andress for an intimate, singer-songwriter show prior to her Lady Like (Deluxe Edition) release, as well as Alex Hall for his Six Strings EP release party. Singer-songwriters like Nick Wayne, Hannah Grey Ellis, Jake Scott, Josh Kerr, Emily Weisband, and many more put on reoccurring performances at The Listening Room for fans around the world.

Prior to these venues and outlets providing the opportunity for so many of these artists to perform in a more professional setting, several artists were using their personal platforms as a way to reach their fans and followers. Artists like Thomas Rhett, Riley Green, and Old Dominion took to social media spontaneously to tease unreleased music, while others like Niko Moon, Luke Combs, and Drake White, have been known to host weekly home concerts and livestreams. While it’s not quite the same, to be completely honest, these were truly great ‘events’ to look forward to!

We hope and believe that at least some of these traditions will remain once we are beyond the times that we are in now. While they may grow to be less consistent than a weekly show as more touring is involved, it is fair to say that these performances have been mutually beneficial for artists and fans, in that they have provided experiences that have been both uniquely personal, as well as a major source of happiness on all ends.

2. Playing for a Greater Cause –

Even better than the fact that these shows have allowed us to access performances from the comfort of our homes is that many of them have also doubled as unique ways to raise funds for charitable organizations. While providing us with much-needed live music to the best of their ability, the following artists are just some of the many who have also taken it a step further by using their platforms to make a difference in the world and help out greater causes. Here are some examples:

  • In May, Luke Combs performed a virtual livestream where he partnered with Miller Lite’s #VirtualTipJar campaign to support bartenders and restaurant workers nationwide that were out of work as a result of the pandemic.

  • Mitchell Tenpenny played a virtual concert and two live shows at The Listening Room Cafe in October that raised over $20,000 for his own 10penny Fund, an organization that supports people battling cancer.

  • Maren Morris did a virtual tour in October with #VerizonUp which included facetime Meet & Greet packages. The ticket sales of these shows helped her band and crew get back on their feet after the touring business had been crushed. In an effort to make these shows as intimate as possible for those attending, she even shared her margarita recipe, which she called the ‘Marenita’, so that her fans could share a drink together during the show.

  • Logan Mize sold tickets to two virtual shows to celebrate the release of his album, Still That Kid. Mize performed live from The McPherson Opera House in his home state of Kansas, and donated a portion of the proceeds to local music businesses in his hometown.

  • Kip Moore performed a concert at The Ryman that was both a socially-distanced show and a global livestream to celebrate the release of his Wild World (Deluxe Album), and donated a portion of the proceeds to ACM Lifting Lives. The album included the song “Don’t Go Changing”, whose music video was dedicated to local music venues across Nashville and helped raise awareness for Music Venue Alliance Nashville.

  • Florida Georgia Line performed songs from their new album Life Rolls On through a virtual show live from their own FGL House in Nashville. FGL partnered with Amazon Music and CMT to raise funds for the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee’s Nashville Neighbors Fund to help those affected by the Nashville Christmas bombing.

Although we know that there are many more artists who are supporting great causes at this time, we hope that by making you aware of at least some, you will share in the light that is being shined on the world as we face these dark times, through great music and kind artists.

3. The Music that Illuminated a World in Dark –

There are quite a few songs that were produced as positive by-products of the 2020 year. For many people, these songs were powerful enough to awaken the realization of just how significant this year has been, and will forever be remembered as, in our history. Through the messages found within the lyrics and the powerful deliverance provided by the music itself, these songs will always be tied to the struggles that we faced together, the memories made, and the emotions we felt, as a result of these trying social, political, and economic times in our country.

Some of these songs are: “Six Feet Apart” (Luke Combs), “Be A Light” (Thomas Rhett featuring Reba McEntire, Hillary Scott, Chris Tomlin, and Keith Urban), “Better Than We Found It” (Maren Morris), “Worldwide Beautiful” (Kane Brown), “Rage & Sorrow” (BRELAND), “What Are You Gonna Tell Her” & “Black Like Me” (Mickey Guyton), “Undivided” (Tyler Hubbard & Tim McGraw), U.S. Stronger (Florida Georgia Line), “The Great Divide” (Luke Combs & Billy Strings), “Say Something” (Keith Urban), “Hard Days” (Brantley Gilbert), “Wait For The Light” (Jillian Jackqueline), and “No I in Beer” (Brad Paisley).

4. Face-to-Face –

In an effort to grow close to fans in ways they never have before, several artists have created community phone numbers, offering facetime and zoom opportunities through both their social media stories and these special phone numbers. Whether it was in an attempt to escape boredom and fill a newfound abundance of free time, or to celebrate music releases, artists created opportunities to pursue relationships with their fans. More specifically, Brad Paisley and Kelsea Ballerini both hopped from zoom call to zoom call on multiple occasions, Noah Schnacky facetimed with fans to celebrate his single release, and Cole Swindell offered virtual event invitations through his community number.

This is an approach that is likely much more common than you may have thought. We suggest you check the bios and story highlights of your favorite artists to see if they have a number to contact. If a community number has been created, it is likely that it will continue to allow for more opportunities like these. If you were unaware of this, or missed out on some of these opportunities in the past, there is a good chance that interactions like these will continue at least until artists are able to return to the stage.

5. Directly from the Fans –

We asked our followers how they have stayed connected to country music over the past year. Many of their answers were included above, as they were similar to what we have been doing as fans ourselves, or in that they informed us of outlets and artists we were previously unaware of. However, some noteworthy responses were shared as personal ways in which fans found themselves staying connected to music over the last year.

Many shared that they have either spent time making music themselves, listening to their friends play, creating their own YouTube videos and TikToks, or following artists as they do the same. Some also pointed out that they have been watching artist documentaries or old episodes of CMT Crossroads.

Perhaps our favorite way that fans have been staying connected (mainly due to the irony) is by watching old concert videos, you know the ones you used to get judged for taking! We all know that person, have seen that person, or maybe we are that person, that takes way too many pictures and videos at a concert and has someone telling them to put the phone down and just enjoy the show. Welp, the joke’s on them because even though we haven’t gone to a concert in over a year, we still have years worth of endless concerts on our phones and computers. So if you haven’t taken a trip down memory lane lately, we suggest you start scrolling and go through your old videos. It’ll be the next best thing until you’re actually back at a concert!

6. NYCountry Swag –

In the many ways that artists and fans have stayed connected to each other and to country music over the last year, we here at NYCountry Swag have done much of the same. When quarantine first started and we thought we’d only be away from being in-person shows for a short period of time, we pivoted and took our usual live country brunch events based in New York City and turned them into virtual country brunches on Instagram Live where artists like Walker Hayes, Filmore, Kylie Morgan, Adam Doleac, and more joined us to catch-up, sing songs, and of course, drink mimosas! Additionally, we turned our usual in-person artist interviews into an ‘Up Close & Virtual’ series, where we caught up with artists like Morgan Wallen, Gabby Barrett, Devin Dawson, and more over zoom and shared with fans.

Aside from the livestreams, our team also partnered with Walker Hayes and New York’s Country 94.7 for our Kindness Isn’t Canceled campaign to feed the frontlines in NYC and later with Teddy Robb and New York’s Country 94.7 to outfit the homeless in our ‘Be Kind’ campaign.

Being a small business that ultimately relies on the live music industry, we also increased our merchandise sector including our newest product: our ‘mentally, i’m at a concert’ mugs.

Russell Dickerson Continues to Break Records with “Love You Like I Used To”

Russell Dickerson continues to break records with his hit song, “Love You Like I Used To,” as it is currently tied as the longest-running top ten single in radio history.

One of our all-time favorite artists, future entertainer of the year, and our actual “day one,” Russell Dickerson, continues to shatter the glass ceiling in his career. Back in November, we shared the news that Dickerson’s song “Love You Like I Used To” marked his fourth consecutive #1 single. Now, we can rejoice again as that same song has officially tied “Amazed” by Lonestar as the longest-running top ten single in radio history! Dickerson took to Instagram to reveal the exciting news and shared a mash-up of the two record-breaking songs.

In just a few short years, Dickerson has accomplished a monumental feat. His first four songs to country radio reached the top spot on the charts, and his latest single, “Home Sweet” just broke the Top 50, impacting country radio just in January! Dickerson trails only Luke Combs’ with consecutive hits right from their debut. Furthermore, if “Love You Like I Used To” stays in the top ten, it will officially stand on its own as the longest-running top ten single in history.

With only two albums under his belt, Dickerson is truly just at the beginning of his long and promising career in country music. He continues to be one of the most talented and humble singer-songwriters in the genre, and it is only a matter of time until he is surely a household name.

We cannot wait to continue to root for more success for the singer-songwriter and predict that one day he will be accepting an honor as Entertainer of the Year.

Congratulations to Russell and his team on this awesome accomplishment!

5 Unreleased Cuts From Instagram That We Are Loving

Maybe it’s just us, but it seems that it is now trendy for country artists to give fans a taste of what’s to come via Instagram. We are noticing that so many singer-songwriters are previewing unreleased materials and even demos to fans via their social media, just to keep fans excited.

Whatever the reason, we are absolutely loving it! We shared some of our favorites last year, here and here, and now we’re sharing some of our new faves from the past few weeks.

1. “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old”- Luke Combs

One of our saving graces during this past year, Luke Combs continues to be a man that is all about the fans! Recently, he posted a video of himself singing a new unreleased tune that could easily fit into his latest project. “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old” is a must record!

2. “Mama Prayed For”- Meghan Patrick

One of the most unique picks on our list, Meghan Patrick’s unreleased song “Mama Prayed For” is a masterpiece in the making. The Canadian country star is on the brink of success here in the states. It is only a matter of time! This particular song features her insane vocal range, her unique songwriting, and her ability to relate through her music.

3. “No Hard Feelings”- Old Dominion

Honestly, Old Dominion can do no wrong in our eyes. “No Hard Feelings” has already got fans asking when it is going to be released. Clearly, in the songwriting mode, the men of Old Dominion are cranking out demo after demo this year, and we are here for it! This unreleased jam will be a perfect addition to their setlist.

4. “Perfect Imperfections”- Tucker Beathard

Tucker Beathard has been quietly doing his thing on social media all quarantine long. He is not one to fight for attention, continuously proving that he is an artist above all else. Although there were a few unreleased tracks to choose from, “Perfect Imperfections” captured our hearts. The mellow and emotional tune is all about love and recognizing all the details about your partner. Swoon-worthy for sure!

5. Untitled- Madison Kozak

Madison Kozak is one of our favorite singer-songwriters on the scene right now. Her voice is strong, yet ethereal, but it is her ability to craft a lyric that gets us every time. She has been having a lot of fun sharing her writes and demos on social media, but this untitled song is tugging at our heartstrings the most.

Keep up with NY Country Swag, as we will be sure to let you know ASAP, if any of these songs are released! Fans can join our Weekly Round-Up e-newsletter here, for the latest in country music and more news about future releases.

Sean Stemaly Releases New Song, “Hello, You Up”

Sean Stemaly’s new song, “Hello, You Up” is available now, March 9th on all streaming platforms. Written by Jamie Moore and John Byron, take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the track.

Rolling into 2021, Swag Spotlight artist Sean Stemaly is one of the artists we are most excited about. So far, each of his previous releases like “Come Back To Bed” and “Last Night All Day” have shown different sides of the singer-songwriter’s personality and craft. His newest song, “Hello, You Up” deepens our respect for Stemaly’s unique style and talent.

“Hello, You Up” is a clever, quasi-break-up song that we can all relate to. The track paints the picture of an on-again/off-again couple that are missing each other. Utilizing the ever-popular phrase “Hello, You Up,” Stemaly creates a song that feels meaningful; despite, the usually insidious sentiment. The new music video amplifies the song, giving visuals to the couple and their will they/won’t they narrative.

“Girl I’m just a Hello, you up, do you wanna come over? / I know you think that I probably ain’t sober / I’m just alone and I’m missin’ your shoulder away / Yeah I’m just an I know we said that we needed some space but / I don’t want nobody else in your place / When we said goodbye, well maybe we made a mistake / So if you’re awake, girl, I’m just a Hello, you up, do you wanna come over? away”

Stemaly continues to find a way to fuse his rhythmic style into a creative country song. His voice and the lyrics are definitely standouts on the new track.

Miranda Lambert: New Music, Nashville Bar and GRAMMYs

Miranda Lambert just dropped new music, announced a forthcoming collaborative album, revealed plans for a Nashville bar, and is set to perform at The GRAMMYs…

In a series of posts first shared with fans early last week, Miranda Lambert teased some upcoming news that she would be joining forces with fellow songwriters Jack Ingram and Jon Randall to release a collection of songs entitled The Marfa Tapes, due out May 7th. The record is a culmination of intimate and raw songs that the threesome wrote and recorded together in the tiny town of Marfa, Texas. To introduce the project, the group have released the first track off the record, a song called “In His Arms.”

Like the other tunes from the upcoming album, “In His Arms” was recorded and written when the trio visited the middle-of-nowhere town back In November. The songwriting haven has become a profound location for personal growth, love, trust, and friendship. “In His Arms” is pure poetry set to lovely instrumentals. The song is all about missing a man, who she only knew from a brief encounter. The sentiment is the perfect introduction to the rest of the record.

Theres something singular that happens in that moment of collaboration and creation, something you can never really recreate in the studio, said Ingram in a recent press release. Our hope with this album was to share a little bit of that magic with people.

In addition to the new music news, Lambert also revealed plans for her very own bar on Broadway in Nashville’s famed downtown area. Repping for the girls, the establishment named Casa Rosa, marks the first bar and restaurant on Broadway to be opened by a female country singer. Casa Rosa is set to open in summer 2021 and will feature four floors of live entertainment, including a rooftop bar.

Casa Rosa, which translates to “Pink House” will feature tufted pink boots, lots of rhinestones, memorabilia from Lambert’s career, including costumes from music videos, guitars, and more. On the menu will be Tex-Mex options like tacos and of course, tequila.

The award-winning singer shared the news with fans via Instagram, adding “I’m so excited I’ll have a honky tonk with my name on it!  Tacos, tequila and tufted pink booths…what else can a girl ask for?! This place is special to me and I’m happy to be representing the ladies here in Music City. See y’all down there @casarosanashville soon!”

That’s not all for exciting happenings in the singer’s professional life. It was also recently revealed that Lambert will be performing this Sunday, March 14th at The GRAMMYs where she is nominated for three awards including Best Country Solo Performance, Best Country Song for “Bluebird” and Best Country Album for Wildcard. Niko Moon Scores His First Number One Song with “GOOD TIME”

Niko Moon’s “GOOD TIME” earns him his first number one song as the tune hits the top spot on the country charts this week.

Niko Moon is an artist and a songwriter that we have believed in from day one! Right before the world shut down last year, we featured him in one of our Live Swag Sessions, where he sang “GOOD AT LOVING YOU” and of course, “GOOD TIME”, just before sitting down to chat about the music. Now, we all get to celebrate as Moon’s first single to country radio, “GOOD TIME” is officially the number one song on Country Radio.

With an unbelievable zest for life, Moon proves that a happy song is exactly what we need right now. “GOOD TIME” is exactly what it sounds like, a song that makes you just want to kick back, let go of your worries, and just vibe with the song. His debut single shows an authentic blending of genres with a universal message of highlighting positivity and happiness at the forefront.

“I’ve got some good news y’all! “GOOD TIME” is number one on the radio y’all! It’s the number one song on country radio,” shared Moon in an Instagram video from earlier today, “and it’s all because of y’all! It’s all because y’all supported me through this crazy past year and I just wanted to tell y’all how much y’all mean to me”.

Moon is one of those artists that will continue to sneak up on you. His undeniable charm and charisma is one of a kind, and we cannot wait to see how the NYCountry Swag 2021 Artist to Watch continues to blossom this year. When live music makes a full comeback, we’re sure that Niko Moonwill be one of the first to get back out there and start the party again for his fans!

Luke Bryan Drinks Away Lost Love in “Drink a Little Whiskey Down”

Luke Bryan’s new song, “Drink A Little Whiskey Down” is available now, March 5th, on all streaming platforms. Written by Bryan, Matt Dragstrem, and Josh Thompson, the song takes you on a journey of love lost and drowning those sorrows in the bottle.

When it comes to moving on from his lost love, Luke Bryan wants us to know he’s doing just fine. He’s moving on, and he’s getting over her, but every now and then, he falls back into old habits on his new song, “Drink A Little Whiskey Down.”

The melancholy moving-on-mixed-with-mourning track tells the tale of Bryan twisting off the cap every now and then, having “just enough to get you gone.” In general, he’s back to his old habits, like hanging with his friends and doing just fine. He’s “come a long way getting over us,” but sometimes he finds himself wondering if she misses him.

“It don’t happen like it used to happen/ When it does, I twist off the cap/ And drink a little whiskey down.”

Bryan wants her to know he’s doing just okay without her, but he’ll admit to himself and everyone listening that he may slip up every now and then.

“I don’t need your touch/ Need your smile/ Except for every once in a while.”

Co-written by Bryan with Matt Dragstem, and Josh Thompson, the track is one of six new songs on the deluxe re-release of Bryan’s 2020 album, Born Here, Live Here, Die Here. “We all know 2020 was hard on all levels for many,” Bryan revealed in a statement. “Things were put on hold in the entertainment business, but it did allow more time to make music and I’m excited to share these six new songs.”

Meanwhile, Bryan has been keeping busy, appearing on the new season of American Idol on ABC and celebrating his latest #1 this week with “Down To One,” his 26th career chart-topper. It remains to be seen if “Drink A Little Whiskey Down” will be his 27th, but on the strength of the song and Bryan’s star-power, it seems very likely.

The deluxe edition of Born Here, Live Here, Die Here, due out April 9, can be pre-saved and pre-ordered now! Visit the link here for yours.

Thomas Rhett Announces Double Album and Drops Two Songs

Thomas Rhett surprised fans with the official release of two new songs, “Growing Up” and “Want It Again” along with announcing his plans to release a DOUBLE album project titled Country Again Side A & Side B. Side A is set to be released on April 30, and Side B later this year. Fans can pre-order Side A now here. Take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the new music and the big announcement.

First up of the new releases is, “Want it Again”. The song tells the story of two people that fall in love at a young age but just like everyone always warned, it just didn’t last. This story goes through the different stages of connection between these two. First, they’re young and in love and when things don’t work out, they figure someday they might find their way back to each other. They move on with other people but somewhere in the back of their mind they’re still thinking of the other and thinking that maybe one day they’d be together again. When those other relationships don’t end up lasting either, they lean on each other’s shoulders to get through those breakups and eventually find their way back into each other’s arms, admitting that they always knew they would.

“You moved on and so did I / But you danced around in the back of my mind / Yeah good for you, he seems like a good guy / Well you know me enough to know that’s a lie”

The track was written by Rhett along with frequent co-writers Josh Miller, Josh Thompson, and Matt Dragstream. The story of the subjects in the song can very much compare to the true story of Thomas Rhett and his now-wife Lauren Akins. As told in her book, ‘Live in Love’, The two dated in high school after being neighborhood and family friends for the majority of their lives. They decided they were better off friends and stopped seeing each other. Throughout the rest of high school and onto college, they remained friends, but each moved on and found themselves in serious relationships with other people. When those relationships ended, they leaned on each other to get through those breakups and ultimately found themselves back in the arms of their friend and once young loves.

“Girl I knew someday you’d find, your way back into my arms / So girl I kept this heart of mine / Somewhere good and safe, I knew you’d want it again someday / I always hoped and prayed, that you’d want it again someday”

The next track released is “Growing Up”. As fans can imagine, the title gives the gist of the story behind the song away. “Growing Up” reminisces on the lessons you learn as you get older, and that continues to happen through different stages of your life. Rhett shares that this song describes his own life and what he has come to realize as he sees himself growing up. It’s not to say that growing up is a single era of one’s life, but more that it is a continuous learning experience.

“Guess you get a little older, get a little wiser, a little more turn that cheek / little less what I want and more what I need, these days I / Still get a little crazy, in a lot of ways I’m still the kid I was / Just a little less temper and a lot more love / I guess I’m growing up”

Raleigh Keegan Releases Vulnerable, “Handyman”

Raleigh Keegan’s brand new song, “Handyman” is available now, March 5th on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dig into the new track.

Every once in a while, a new singer-songwriter comes around, and you automatically think “ARTIST.” That is exactly how we feel about former Swag Spotlight artist, Raleigh Keegan. The rising talent creates music that is straight from his soul and is truly unlike any other artist on the scene right now. As he continues to work on a new album with producer Ryan Gore, Keegan released his newest song “Handyman” for fans to enjoy.

The brand new single is vocally-driven with lyrics that will make you think about life and love. The first verse sets the scene, as Keegan declares that he can be whatever his lover needs him to be. The chorus takes that notion a step further until the singer admits in the last line of the chorus that it’s not that easy for himself. The lyric reads “Wish it could be that easy for me to fix myself.”

Backed by incredible piano and guitar, the second verse is just as impactful as the first. The focal point; however, is on how difficult it is to help yourself sometimes; despite, wanting to. Quite possibly one of Keegan’s most vulnerable songs to date, “Handyman” is a solid song that is good in every area.

Although the song is great on its own, Keegan is also partnering with the Nashville chapter of Habitat for Humanity on March 14th to help with building a home for a single mom of three. According to his Instagram, five contest winners will get to help Keegan on the build and also win a socially-distanced lunch and mini-concert after. Fans can submit a TikTok video of themselves creatively using any of his songs in the background by tagging Keegan and by texting it to his phone number. Fans must be local to Nashville or be able to get to Nashville on March 14th.
