Mitchell Tenpenny: Neon Christmas – EP Review

Mitchell Tenpenny’s brand new Christmas EP Neon Christmas is available now, October 23rd on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the new songs off the special holiday project.

One of our absolute favorite singer-songwriters, Mitchell Tenpenny has one of the most distinct voices in country music. His signature sound has gained him boatloads of fans across the globe. After gifting us with an original Christmas song, “Naughty List” last year, the singer took it a step further showcasing his love for the holiday season a little bit more with a full Christmas EP. Today, Tenpenny released his EP entitled Neon Christmas, which features four incredible covers of some of our favorite holiday classics as well as three original new tunes.

Despite the fact that some of the songs are covers and some are originals, Tenpenny finds a way to make every song feel fresh and new. Renditions of Christmas classics like “O Holy Night” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” remind us how powerful and effortless the singer’s vocals truly are. Both songs showcase his talent in an undeniable way.

The other two covers of songs, “Let It Snow! Let It Snow Let It Snow!” And “Joy to the World” feature a more rock-country element to them. The former could literally be an original Mitchell Tenpenny song. Tenpenny finds a way to make the classic sound brand new, while on “Joy to the World,” the singer delivers a smooth, vibey anthem.

Of course, Tenpenny shines on his original songs. Although many artists try their hand at reimagining Christmas songs, the artist finds a way to deliver three brand new tracks that actually have appeal during the holiday season. Arguably our favorite, the previously released jam, “Naughty List,” is one of Tenpenny’s best. The song reminds us of how it feels to be in love during Christmastime.

“I’m gon’ end up on the naughty list / And Santa’s gonna take back all my gifts / With kisses sweeter than the cookies that we left up by the chimney / Tell me, baby, how could I resist”

The other two originals, “Snow Angels” and the title track, “Neon Christmas” are equally as enticing for different reasons. “Snow Angels” is a romantic and sensual song with an R&B flair. Tenpenny pushes the boundaries on this song in all the right ways. On the other hand, “Neon Christmas” is all about making the best out of a snow delay and having Christmas under the neon lights of a bar. We love the unique visuals that the song evokes.

“We have a neon Christmas, baby don’t you know / Yeah, as long as we’re together it don’t matter where we go / If a cold beer, corner booth, or a I’ve bar stool’s on your wish list / We can have a neon Christmas”

Overall, Neon Christmas might be one of our favorite new holiday records. Tenpenny finds a way to reinvigorate the classics while giving us new jams to play all season long! As the singer said on his social media, “Happy Merry Fuckin Christmas.”

Track45: Small Town – EP Review

Country music’s newest trio, Track45, introduces their debut project, Small Town EP via Stoney Creek Records. Available today, October 23rd on all streaming platforms, take a look below as we dive deeper into the collection of songs.

Track45 Small Town EP, available now, October 23rd

Track45 introduces their debut project, “Small Town” EP, available now, October 23rd.

A new family-oriented band has landed in Nashville. The trio, now dubbed as Track45, are officially introducing themselves with an EP titled Small Town. Siblings Jenna, Ben, and KK Johnson, originally from Mississippi, offer three tracks that provide listeners with the first look at their multifaceted artistry and honest roots.

“We moved to Nashville with a big dream,” says the members of Track45 in a recent press release. “We’re so proud that our first EP, Small Town, tells the story of who we are and where we’re from. We poured our hearts into this project, and we hope people love it as much as we do!”

Though the group is new to releasing their own music and being a part of a record label, each individual artist has been successful behind the scenes in publishing and songwriting. In fact, Ben has just received his first #1 as a songwriter with Lee Brice’s “One of Them Girls”. Other cuts with their involvement include artists such as Justin Timberlake, Charlie Puth, HARDY, and Lauren Alaina.

Now, Track45 has taken the spotlight by writing songs for their own voice. “Come On In”, the introduction track to Small Town, acts as a musical greeting to, essentially, the world. Lyrically, the story brings awareness to the close-knit family and growing up in Meridian, Mississippi. At the same time, though, it’s a call to action for any listener to come on in.

“Me + You” is a more stripped production that showcases the broad range of the band in regards to delivering soft, delicate tones as well as strong harmonies through attractive storytelling. The vocal contribution throughout the track is arranged in a way to familiarize oneself with the talent present. For instance, Ben works both inside and outside of the adjoining voices until a moment is designated for him to incorporate a mature male lead that adds a new layer to the already captivating performance.

The last, but certainly not the least, on the EP, “Met Me Now” seems to focus primarily on country music influences. It’s wholesome with an intent to retrace steps of the past in order to make things right with a certain someone. Though, there’s a growth in the comparison of the “now vs. then” self-reflection that is uplifting and motivating.

The southern hospitality does not go unnoticed both through lyric and theory. Track45 balances small-town values and stories through an invigorating blend of genres relating to country, R&B, pop, and rock in a modern way.

The Cadillac Three: ‘Tabasco and Sweet Tea’ – Album Review

The Cadillac Three’s brand new album, TABASCO & SWEET TEA is available now, October 23rd on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dive deeper into the collection of songs in our full album review.

The Cadillac Three new album TABASCO & SWEET TEA

The Cadillac Three’s brand new album, TABASCO & SWEET TEA is available now

If fans were unclear of the sounds that influenced The Cadillac Three, vibes off their latest album TABASCO & SWEET TEA make clear the effect old rock favorites have had by effortlessly weaving that quality into this release.

Eleven songs of pure grit and rock with a contemporary country twist transport this collection to another realm of music; one that could gain them new fans. The band’s COUNTRY FUZZ came out in February, but together they knew they had more to give to their fans and deeper musical exploration to uncover.

Lead singer and guitarist Jaren Johnston describes the album as a science project, noting that it’s, “constantly moving in different directions,” and he could not have hit the nail on the head any better. Hip-inducing grooves and classic country lyrics constantly make you unsure of whether you’re at a rock concert or out on an old back road, but the marriage of the two creates an atmosphere of comfort. The fans can’t have in-person concerts right now, but jamming to this album gives you an iconic close replicate.

Written by Johnston, Alysa Vanderheym, and Ben Burgess, the opening track “Tabasco & Sweet Tea” is sure to make you hungry, with mentions of Blue Bell hot fudge, jerky, and sugar cane. Electric guitar solos and a solid backbeat make this a surefire dive bar listen.

The 80’s funk and hip hop fusion create just one of the hybrid sounds on this eleven-track album on “Head Over Wheels”. Expertly crafted bass lines underneath syncopated rhythms bring modern innovations to classic standards. Drummer Neil Mason goes on to say, “As we finished the last record, we knew we were only tapping the surface with songs like ‘The Jam’ for where we could go next musically and found ourselves inspired to dive into these sounds that we had never explored before as a band.”

Taking risks by traversing new territory has paid off in new types of sounds that fans can most definitely appreciate something different from a classic country song and sound.

“Bridges” has a rockin’ beat, but sneaks quite a life lesson in its lyrics, reminding listeners that all of our choices have consequences, and only by experience can you learn to decipher the ones meant for you.

“You’ve got to make your decision / Bridges, We live we learn which ones to cross which ones to burn”

“Money Ain’t Shit” starts off with a jammin’ guitar solo and deep gritty verse that transitions into a smooth belted chorus and a dynamic drop pause that is extremely captivating. “Turn the Radio On” follows suit with quick spoken verse lines that make for an easy fan sing-along at a concert.

As many of their fans are forced to explore new areas of their own lives, TC3 provides a soundtrack to which they did the same, turning over a new leaf in their sound and continuing to create. The feel may be influenced by the classics, conjuring a familiar feeling we all need right now to encourage forward motion. Anything but vintage though, the chic conversion of the old in TABASCO & SWEET TEA strike an innovative chord, projecting good vibes for the road ahead.

On October 27, TC3 will debut songs from TABASCO & SWEET TEA with a livestream for audiences in North America at 7:00P CT and UK/Europe at 20:00 CET.

Maddie and Tae: We Need Christmas – Album Review

Maddie and Tae’s first-ever Christmas project, We Need Christmas, is available now, October 23rd. Filled with holiday classics and two original songs, you’ll instantly be in the holiday spirit and have hope going into 2020.

Maddie And Tae We Need Christmas

Maddie and Tae’s holiday project, “We Need Christmas” is available now, October 23rd

Maddie and Tae’s Christmas six-song project, We Need Christmas, is here and will instantly put you in the holiday spirit. And boy, after the year we’ve all had, we need it.

While covering the classics “This Christmas”, “Holly Jolly Christmas”, “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” the duo not only showcases their originality but their harmonizing talent. Their slowed-down version of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”, is nothing like we’ve ever heard before. With just a guitar and their powerful vocals, it’s a beautiful and emotional rendition that everyone needs to hear.

“Merry Married Christmas” is the first of two original songs on the project. Written by both girls along with Tae’s husband, Josh Kerr, this song is the perfect holiday love song. No matter if you’re newlyweds or been married for fifty years, spending quality time with your significant other during the holidays is the best gift there is.

The title track, “We Need Christmas”, finishes out the album and will certainly become a classic. Written again by the duo Maddie & Tae along with Matthew West and AJ Pruis, this song is the perfect reminder of why the holidays are such a special time. There’s nothing like traveling back home to spend time with your loved ones enjoying your favorite traditions such as watching your favorite holiday specials. This year has been hard on everyone and this track gives us hope that the Christmas season will bring us the love and sense of togetherness we all need going into 2021.

“This world can use a little healing // Our hearts can surely use something to believe in // We need Christmas // Now more than ever bring us together”

In a recent press release, the award-winning duo shared what this project means to them. “We are so proud of this project and we loved recreating some of our favorite Christmas classics as well as writing some of our own. Making We Need Christmas was such a bright spot for us this year and we hope this project brings a little joy and peace to our fans during this difficult year.”

Maddie and Tae’s Christmas album is a special one and will certainly be on repeat all season long.

Luke Combs: What You See Ain’t Always What You Get Album Review

Luke Combs’ brand new deluxe record What You See Ain’t Always What You Get is available now, October 23rd on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as dig a little deeper into the new songs off the deluxe record.

Luke Combs Deluxe

Luke Combs’ What You See Ain’t Always What You Get Deluxe Album is available now

Last year, country superstar Luke Combs released his sophomore record titled What You See Is What You Get, full of 17 original songs. The album quickly went to the top of the charts, achieved platinum status, and boasts four number-one singles so far. If that wasn’t enough for fans to be excited about, Combs decided to release a deluxe version of his latest project, cleverly changing the name to What You See Ain’t Always What You Get. The album features five new tracks that prove once again why Combs is one of the best in country music.

Keeping with his traditional meets modern sound and soulful voice, Combs makes an already incredible project that much better with the addition of the new tracks. “Six Feet Apart,” which was later added to the original album touched the hearts of fans everywhere with its poignant message during these unprecedented times that 2020 has found us in. The somber ballad is truthful and inspiring, reminding us all that “there’ll be crowds and there’ll be shows” and of course, “there will be light after dark.”

Combs’ collaboration with violinist, Amanda Shires, “Without You” was also released before the record. Similar to one of our favorite deep cuts, “This One’s For You” off his debut record, “Without You” is sentimental, honest, and highly personal. The new song is the ultimate expression of gratitude to all that have helped him get to this point in his career.

For fans, who prefer the high-energy side of Combs, the singer added songs like “Cold As You” and “My Kinda Folk” to the project. Along the same lines as “Beer Never Broke My Heart” and “Does to Me,” the former compares a girl to a beer, calling her “cold.” The ultimate diss is as clever as the song is catchy.

The latter, “The “My Kinda Folk” fits in line with his song “Blue Collar Boys.” Combs is always reminding us that he is humble to his core and that he knows exactly who he is and where he came from. Both these songs are a must-play when concert season finally rolls around again!

“There oughta be a law against working this hard and still having this much fun / We get it done, drink a beer, catch a fish, hunt a deer and then we’ll  fire up a little smoke / Me and my kinda folk”

“The Other Guy” is a mid-tempo song off the new project. All heart, Combs proves that he feels things deeply. The emotive track is all about a guy who looks like he is doing well on the outside but is still grieving over his ex. Truly relatable, the song has Combs’ stamp on it.

“You should see the other guy that’s missing you / and late at night he’s wishing you would come back home  / girl, he can’t move on  / and his heart still takes a beating just living with your leaving / and it might look like I’m doing alright / but you should see the other guy”

Finally, the deluxe record ends with the touching, heartfelt song “Forever After All.” The singer originally teased a clip of this song on TikTok back in August, and fans obviously went crazy for it. Clearly inspired by his now-wife, Nicole, Combs is giving us a love song that completes the trilogy of hit songs that have come before, including “Beautiful Crazy” and “Better Together.” The ballad reflects how love knows no bounds and will truly last forever even in death.

Time and time again, Combs proves his staying power. The singer-songwriter is as real as it gets. As long as he continues to be true to himself, stick to his roots, and release music, the fans, and the success will follow. What You See Ain’t Always What You Get is just a bonus on an already incredible career and record!

OCTOBER PICKS:

Stephanie Wagner, Founder

Pick: “Home to Me” – Ross Ellis
Songwriters: Emma-Lee, Karen Kosowski, Ross Ellis

A song I’ve found myself listening to a lot lately is Ross Ellis’ “Home To Me”. The song came out a few months ago and it’s one that I can’t seem to get out of my head. It’s got relatable lyrics of missing home, but knowing home will always be there. Sometimes in a world where it seems like everything is constantly changing, it’s comforting to know that coming back home will always feel the same. Matched with a groovy rhythm this is a song to sing out loud with the windows down.

“Ridin’ around town // Roll with the homies // Roll the windows down // Where everybody knows me // It don’t matter how much I’ve changed // ‘Cuz this place gonna stay the same // Shoot a little pool down at the lane // And throwing back Crowns ’til nobody’s standing // It don’t matter how much I leave // It’s always gonna be // Always gonna be home to me // Home to me, home to me”

Christina Bosch, Managing Editor

Pick: “Neon Moon” – Kacey Musgraves (Brooks & Dunn Coverage)
Songwriters: Ronnie Dunn

I recently re-fell in love with the entire REBOOT album, where one of my favorite bands, Brooks and Dunn reimagined their biggest hits with today’s biggest country artists. Simply put, Kacey Musgraves takes this classic country broken heart ballad and takes it to a new level, highlighting her crystal clear voice and the impeccable story.

“If you lose your one and only, there’s always room here for the lonely to watch your broken dreams dance in and out of the beams of the neon moon”

You can’t listen to this song and not see the entire scenes play out, a smoke-filled barroom filled with people who are trying to forget a past relationship. It’s one of my favorite songs and I am so thrilled that Kacey Musgraves put her own spin on it.

Lucie Bernheim, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Light Years” – Rachel Reinert
Songwriters: Rosi Golan, David Nash, Rachel Reinert

Rachel Reinert’s solo debut Into The Blue was released just as the world began to change indefinitely. Although not the way she planned the release, the closing track “Light Years” signifies so much of what everyone has been going through these last 8 months. The song is like a stream of consciousness about coming to terms with life and trying to find calm in the chaos. “I could fill suitcases with my past, but there’s no more space so/Here come the light years,” she sings over dreamy harmonies on the chorus. It’s difficult to find hope in these times, and as Reinert sings on the bridge, “it’s hard not to be afraid”, but in times like these, it feels like being hopeful is our only option.

Dylan Bestler, Contributing Writer

Pick: “UNAPOLOGETICALLY COUNTRY AS HELL” – HARDY

Songwriters: Michael Hardy, Jake Mitchell, Smith Ahnquist, Nick Donley

I think it is safe to say I’m obsessed with HARDY at this point. When I hear this song, I picture a bunch of people at a bar, arms locked, singing along to this country-boy anthem. HARDY’s songwriting skills are poetic and this track is a great representation of that as he uses a bunch of alliteration, repetition, rhyme schemes, and imagery. There is too much gold in here to even pick out my favorite lines and phrases. My favorite songs are generally ones I can relate to and ironically, I cannot relate to this one at all; I don’t fish, hunt, own a truck, chew tobacco or go to church but it doesn’t stop me from enjoying the hell out of this song.

You can blame it on my pedigree / but I can’t help my heredity / I’m unapologetically country as hell

Kristina Callahan, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Better Than That” – Matt Stell
Songwriters: Joe Fox, Matt Stell, Phil Barton

I’ve been a huge fan of Matt Stell since “Prayed for You” came out and have probably listened to his current single “Everywhere but On” no less than 75 times so it’s no surprise I am loving this new song “Better Than That.” Stell sings from the perspective of an onlooker at a bar that sees a woman with what he thinks, is the wrong guy and he knows her “better than that.”

You ain’t a shot of Jager from a stranger at a dive bar // His hands all on your body on the dance floor // Try’n first kiss you up against the wall // I know you better than that / It ain’t the move, ain’t what you do // He don’t know the first thing about you // I know you better than that // Yeah, I know you better than that
Stell’s lyrics have been one of the reasons I love his songs. They’re relatable and so catchy. I can’t wait to hear his new EP coming out later this month.

Erin Crosby, Contributing Writer

Pick: “I Called Mama” – Tim McGraw
Songwriters: Jimmy Yeary, Lance Miller, Marv Green

Tim McGraw’s “I Called Mama” is one of those songs that sneak up on you. Truthfully, I didn’t have an opinion on it for the first few weeks of it being released to radio. I was even leaning towards not liking it. Lately, though, I crave the sweet tone of the iconic “Live Like You Were Dying” singer on such sentimental lyrics to play through my car speakers.

The message behind this single is true and speaks to everyone for different reasons. Whether you lost someone suddenly, miss your mom or feel homesick, “I Called Mama” runs true. It’s a story-telling production in which the accompaniment is almost irrelevant in discussion (no offense to the instrumentalists or producers). McGraw’s words are enough to gain the necessary traffic and attention for the undiluted emotions present.

Alexa Ebner, Contributing Writer

Pick: Feeling Things – Ingrid Andress
Songwriters: Ingrid Andress, Jason Wu, Trey Campbell

Ingrid Andress never disappoints with an emotional song that makes you want to pour a glass of wine and eat a tub of ice cream on the couch. This new song, featured on the new artist’s Lady Like Deluxe Album that she released this month, is an addition to the album that I am very excited about. The singer-songwriter has a way with words and the raw honesty within them shows her humanity. This song sheds light on a perspective of loneliness that people don’t often talk about. It explores the idea of whether it’s better to feel nothing at all or put yourself out there and potentially get hurt. Ultimately, Andress reveals that she is ready to ‘fall, bleed, and sting’ in order to put herself out there again and ‘feel things’. Andress declares confidently that the pain and struggles of finding love and happiness are worth it and she’s ready to face the scary unknown, as she beautifully sings “Cause I miss, I miss feeling things.” A lyric that speaks to me is, “I watch the parades go by, but I’m not in ’em.” The artist uses a clever play on the long-time popular saying “If you’re not in the parade, you’re watching it”, as a metaphor for her feelings. Andress describes this realization that she doesn’t feel a fulfillment in her life that she watches others experience, which is what leads her to the conclusion that it’s more important to put yourself out there, even though there will always be a fear of getting hurt.

Julia Grubbs, Contributing Writer

Pick: Next To You – Little Big Town
Songwriters: Hillary Reynolds, Michael Jade, Trevor Jarvis

I don’t even know how I came across this song, but I heard it on my Google Home and immediately thought, I need to know what this is. Little Big Town definitely has some deep-feeling songs out there; “Girl Crush” was in one of the shows I performed in, and it got you every time. But this one just hit different. With a slight indie vibe that transitions into beautiful harmonies and a steady slow beat, “Next To You” uses pauses and a light backing to convey the true emotion that sparked this song.

Don’t you know, You’re the fire in my bones, You’re my heart and my home, oh / And I know, I don’t say it enough, I’ve been down on my luck, My love / But I’ll be fine in the morning, Next to you

It isn’t until three minutes in that it really builds and let’s go. With some of the strong emotions we’ve all been feeling lately, no matter if it has to do with another person or not, this song seems to capture it all, with an eventual strong release of energy and liberation from any chains holding you back. I can’t wait to listen to the rest of Nightfall.

Molly Holmberg, Contributing Writer

Pick: Long Haul – Ian Munsick
Songwriters: Dave Villa, Ian Munsick, Jamie Kennedy

I first discovered Ian Munsick through fellow country singer, Jenna Paulette, sharing his song on her Instagram story. I am always open to listening to new artists and something about his single cover and the song name “Long Haul” made me head over to Spotify right away to take a listen. Let me tell you, I have been listening to his songs on repeat. “Long Haul” is a ballad that paints the picture of a relationship where he is giving his love to last. Lyrically, it speaks from the heart and with the metaphors and symbolism, well get ready for this song pull on your heart strings.
Long as I know that it’s you and me / Time don’t matter at all / Girl, I’m in it for the long haul”.
If you get the chance to watch the music video as well, I strongly encourage that! The landscapes of Wyoming bring the song to life even more.

Abby Kaye-Phillips, Contributing Writer

Pick: Hallelujah – Carrie Underwood featuring John Legend
Songwriters: Toby Gad, John Stephens

Carrie Underwood’s entire Christmas album is pure perfection but the first time I heard this duet with John Legend I had chills up and down my entire body. The gorgeous ballad is my favorite on the project and the swelling melody, gorgeous harmonies, and beautiful lyrics will give you all the feels too. The duet was recorded virtually due to the pandemic, but I’m crossing all my fingers and toes that one day we will get to hear Underwood and Legend sing it together live!

“Let the world stand still, the church bells ring / Silent night as the angels sing / Hallelujah, Hallelujah / Let the magic warm the moonlit air / Hear the choirs join in singing everywhere / Hallelujah, Hallelujah”

Erica Zisman, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Missing One” – Jameson Rodgers
Songwriters: Hunter Phelps, Jameson Rodgers, Smith Ahnquist

This month my pick is Jameson Rodgers song “Missing One.” Honestly, it is a song I often forget about until it comes up on my shuffle or playlists. I always remember in that instance how much I love it, and continue to play it on repeat. The song is truly a lyrical masterpiece. It has everything I love in country songs, solid vocals, even better story-telling, and witty and unexpected lyrics.

“I had ever Eagles record / Center console, in a stack / When we split up, she still had Desperado / And I never asked for it back / So I’m missing one”

Rodgers’ current radio single “Some Girls” is currently rising on the charts, and I would love to see him get the success he deserves. With that being said, if you are unfamiliar with “Missing One,” I suggest you download it immediately. Trigger warning for anyone going through a break-up!

Dierks Bentley Returns With Brand New Song “Gone”

Dierks Bentley’s new song, “Gone” is available now, October 22nd, on all streaming platforms. Written by Ben Johnson, Nicolle Galyon, and Niko Moon, take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the track.

It’s been almost two and a half years since multi-platinum singer/songwriter, Dierks Bentley released his ninth studio album, The Mountain. Fans were beginning to wonder what the “Burning Man” singer was up to during quarantine besides spending his time up in the Colorado mountains and reviving the Hot Country Knights. Bentley has been teasing a new track on his socials all week and today, October 22nd, he officially released “Gone” on all streaming platforms and to country radio.

“Country music is the best genre for storytelling, and I feel like we are realizing it probably now more than ever since we can’t congregate together at concerts, high five each other, sing and shout at the top of our lungs,” Bentley said in a recent press release. “A good country show is just about the greatest communion there is out there.”

Written by Nicolle Galyon, Ben Johnson, and Niko Moon, this new and catchy tune is about a man who goes into hiding and ghosts his family, friends, and boss because he cannot handle his former lover walking out on him. Instead of being productive, he just sits around all day trying to “figure out how a good thing went wrong.” Being married with three kids, Bentley has a less-literal interpretation of this song but instead relates the woman to touring and the fans he can no longer see due to quarantine and the pandemic.

“I’ve been a million places but they’re all up in head  / Over-drinking overthinking ever since you left / I’ve been gone, I’ve been gone / I’ve been sitting on the couch watching TV all day long / All day long, I’ve been tryin’ to figure out how a good thing went wrong”

“We are all relying on lyrics and melodies at home and trying however we can to find different ways to connect with our fans, so that they know how important they still are to us,” Bentley expressed. “I hope this song resonates with mine, and I’m counting the days until we can all be back together again, beers in the air.”

Fans can virtually sing along to this radio-friendly track at the 2020 iHeartCountry Festival that Bentley is headlining tomorrow night, streaming live at 8:00 PM on LiveXLive.

Trace Adkins: Ain’t That Kind of Cowboy – EP Review

Trace Adkins’ latest EP, Ain’t That Kind of Cowboy is available now, October 16th on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dive deeper into the collection of songs in our full review.

After nearly four years since new music from Trace Adkins, a new EP Ain’t That Kind of Cowboy has been released, marking his first project since joining Verge Records Nashville. Still, the six-track release is a continuation of the well-known, lively, and deep-southern-rooted style from the “You’re Gonna Miss This” and “Ladies Love Country Boys’” performer.

The title track acts as the third on the setlist and includes moments of raw sentiment and country-style storytelling. It utilizes a few different approaches through production in regards to Adkins’ heavy tone among stripped chords as well as, primarily in the chorus, more present accompaniment that creates a strong and confident “take it or leave it” feel. “Ain’t That Kind of Cowboy” seemingly points out all the creative and artistic elements that this seasoned musician is capable of since releasing his debut album, Dreamin’ Out Loud, over 20 years ago in 1996.

“Running Into You”, a ballad written by James Slater and Tony Lane, showcases the softness and delicacy of Adkins, who often records heartfelt cuts. Though, there’s something different about this arrangement that stands out. Bart Butler, the producer of the collection, in addition to Adkins and the instrumentalists, maintained a sincerity throughout the process that affects listeners in a way for all emotions involved to be delivered at full force.

A track that annotates a broken heart and explores the aftermath, “Running Into You” covers scenarios in which the person who has said goodbye hasn’t entirely left.

“Round the corners of my heart // Waiting there to take me there again // In the shadows and the light // In the morning and the midnight // When the leaves are still blowing in the wind // That’s when”

Ain’t That Kind of Cowboy is an exciting sneak peek to Adkins’ journey with Verge Records Nashville. In fact, with over 8 million streams in seven months since “Better Off” was released as a single, the EP’s introduction track, the Louisiana native seems to have a lot left up his sleeve. Check out Adkins’ performance of “Better Off” that aired on “TODAY with Hoda and Jenna” from the Grand Ole Opry.

“It was a lot of fun to get back into the studio with Mickey Jack (Cones) and work with Bart (Butler) on this EP, and I couldn’t be prouder of these songs from some of my favorite writers,” shares Adkins in a recent press release. “I’m looking forward to what’s to come.”

2020 CMT Awards: The Complete Recap

Country artists Kane Brown and Ashley McBryde, along with Modern Family star, Sarah Hyland hosted this year’s CMT Awards that took place in unique locations all over Nashville, Tennessee. Take a look below to see which artists took home hardware.

This year’s award show was very different than previous years in certain ways, as winners accepted their awards virtually and artists performed their songs from all different venues throughout Nashville, including Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park, Cherokee Dock, The Barn at Sycamore Farms, and Ruskin Cave.

One thing remained the same though; all the winners were chosen by the fans. They even got to vote for their favorite Video of The Year throughout the night, which started with fourteen nominees and dwindled down to just three by the start of the show. Carrie Underwood’s “Drinking Alone,” directed by Randee St. Nicholas, beat out Keith Urban’s “Polaroid” and Tanya Tucker’s “Bring My Flowers Now.” Underwood also took home the Female Video of the Year award with the certified gold song. For Underwood, this was her 21st and 22nd CMT award, making her the winningest artist in CMT history.

“Fan, you guys never cease to amaze me at how hard you work,” Underwood expressed after winning the Video of the Year. “I’ve seen you guys throwing Twitter parties and doing your thing and voting…this one is really all about you guys, especially because we haven’t been together, but I feel so loved this evening.”

CMT’s own Cody Alan and Katie Cook hosted a small, but live viewing party presented by Ram Trucks. The select, socially-distanced fans got to watch the show live from Cumberland Park on a big screen.

Luke Combs got the show off to a raging start with his upbeat, drinking tune “1, 2 Many.” Brooks and Dunn, who are featured on the studio version of the track, surprised fans and came out to perform their verse. Kix Brooks brought Combs a beer, which he then quickly shot-gunned. Sam Hunt was on next, performing his latest number one song, “Hard To Forget.”

McBryde handed out the first award of the night; the Duo Video of the Year award presented to Dan + Shay for “I Should Probably Go To Bed,” continuing their incredible success at award shows. They also performed this song later in the show. Shortly after, CMT honored their first Equal Play award winner to Jennifer Nettles for her contribution and dedication to getting women more airplay on country radio.

One aspect that made this show stand out from other years was the elaborate, music video-styled sets put together for the artists. A few sets we loved included Shania Twain’s, who performed her classic hit “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under” in a western-themed jail cell with realistic mannequins beside her, and Kelsea Ballerini and Halsey’s performance of “The Other Girl” in an old saloon in Los Angeles.

Speaking of memorable performances, Chris Young took home the award for CMT Performance of the Year for “Drowning” at the CMT Artists of the Year special. That night honored five artists who had tremendous years in 2019 and Kane Brown was one of the recipients. However, that week his friend and drummer, Kenny Dixon passed away in a car accident and Young stepped in for Brown who was too emotional to perform.

“It was a really difficult moment for me, to get up there and play that knowing that he (Brown) was watching, knowing everything he was going through,” Young reflected. “I can’t imagine, even still, what his passing does to you.”

CMT continued their tradition of showcasing new artists throughout the show from the Ram Truck stage. Artists who performed snippets of their hits included Ingrid Andress, Travis Denning, Caylee Hammack, Riley Green, Mickey Guyton, and HARDY.

Old Dominion won the Group Video of the Year award for “One Man Band,” and Luke Bryan took home Male Video of the Year for “One Margarita.” He said the video was a blast to shoot and was a perfect song to lift our spirits as we entered the uncertainties of the coronavirus pandemic.

Gabby Barrett, making her CMT Awards debut, gave us an explosive performance of her double-platinum smash hit, “I Hope.” Later, Taylor Swift, who won the Breakthrough Video of the Year at the CMT’s thirteen years ago, announced Barrett as this year’s winner.

Later in the show, Jimmie Allen and Noah Cyrus performed “This Is Us” on stage together for the first time. This was followed by the announcement of the Collaborative Video of the Year; Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani for “Nobody But You.”

“I really do believe that these award shows are beginning to lose credibility over the last few years and fan-voted awards, to me, are really the only stand-up award shows left in our industry, Shelton stated after winning, “because you guys buy the records and come to the shows and vote on these things.”

Other performances included “Martha Divine” by McBryde, “Chasin’ You” by Morgan Wallen, “What She Wants Tonight” by Bryan, “Worship You” by Brown, and an acoustic rendition of “Hell and Back” by Maren Morris. A drinking song began this fun and incredible night, so it was fitting that a drinking song would end the show as well. Little Big Town performed their energetic current single, “Wine, Beer, Whiskey” from the Ruskin Cave.

Who Is Chase Martin? The Story Behind Her Journey to Country Music

Chase Martin has released her debut single “Levi Denim” after signing to Barry Weiss’ RECORDS (Sony). Read more about the artist below.

Chase Martin, a Charleston native who graduated high school early with a 5.0 GPA, has indirectly had her path chosen for her in the very best way. She had planned on becoming a neurologist, a career path that some may say would be more sensible or realistic however, music was always in her peripheral vision. In a Swag Spotlight interview, we discuss all the details on how this Whitney Houston enthusiast landed in Nashville as well as signing a record deal in the middle of quarantine and her debut single “Levi Denim”.

While taking a year off from school in order to start college with friends and people of her own age, Martin and her parents visited Music City. “They brought me to Nashville when I was 17 and I played a whole bunch of the open mic nights,” Martin explains. “…the next day, we got up and we were going around town, and my dad actually pulls up to an apartment complex and he was like ‘well let’s just look’. And, we started touring this apartment complex and next thing my mom and I know, he says to the lady showing us around ‘well where can I sign for the lease?’”

And, despite any success attained in downtown Charleston, where Martin had initially caught the music bug and was a practicing, consistent performer, the move to Nashville was arguably where her life as a musician began. Though, the roots laid down don’t go unappreciated. The time spent opening up for shows and festivals helped Martin discover her artistry. “I feel like that helped with my stage presence … and (figuring out) what I wanted to say, and just exactly who I wanted to be.”

The debut single “Levi Denim”, released October 9, accurately reveals the type of message to which Martin refers. Not only does it provide encouraging, confident words to young women that showcases the influence Shania Twain has on the artist, but these listeners can also relate to such a situation in which catching the attention of a certain guy is the goal of the night. “I just love to see a woman be confident and comfortable in their skin,” Martin explains. “And, I know the song refers to walking past a guy and wanting his attention, (but) I think at the end of the day the song is about being confident in who you are and, not needing to be dressed to the nines.”

Written by Abby Anderson, Alison Veltz, and Matt Stell, “Levi Denim” is the first representation of this new artist portrayed through music. And, we cannot wait to hear more from Martin, who has entered full force into the industry and hopes to one day find herself in the Grand Ole Opry circle.

Fans can join our Weekly Round-Up e-newsletter here, for the latest in country music and more news about future Chase Martin releases.

“Levi Denim” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music‘ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.
