2020 CMA Awards: Everything You Need To Know

On November 11th, 2020, The 54th Annual CMA Awards show will air on ABC at 8PM ET. Hosted by Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker, the special show will be full of one of a kind moments as the country music family honors the highest talents of 2020 celebrating “Country Music’s Biggest Night”.

2020 CMA Awards Set to Air on November 11th, 2020 at 8PM ET on ABC

Last year, Stephanie and Christina of NYCountry Swag flew down to Nashville to attend the 53rd Annual CMA Awards, witnessing an iconic night for women in country music including the 2019 hosts Carrie Underwood with special guests Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. Of course, this year is looking a little different, but the show must go on and we are certainly excited to cheer the country music community safely from our homes.

The line-up will include special performances from superstar artists like Luke Combs, Eric Church, Maren Morris, and more. Dan + Shay will be joined by Justin Bieber for the world premiere performance of their hit song, “10,000 Hours”. Additionally, Thomas Rhett will take the stage with collaborators Reba McEntire and Chris Tomlin for a special rendition of their 2020 # 1 hit, “Be A Light”. Set to take place in Nashville, Tennessee at the Music City Center, the CMA Awards Show will be the first of the year that will include some sort of live audience. Although tickets will not be available to fans as in years past, the show will bring together the performers, nominees, and their guests in one room for the first time in 2020. In a recent press release, CMA CEO Sarah Trahern notes, “We look forward to hosting our nominated artists and their guests as we celebrate the best of Country Music in a fully safe and physically distant environment.”

Luke Combs & Carly Pearce Announce First Round of 2020 CMA Awards Nominations Live from Grand Ole Opry on Good Morning America

Last year, Stephanie and Christina of NYCountry Swag flew down to Nashville to attend the 53rd Annual CMA Awards, witnessing an iconic night for women in country music including hosts Carrie Underwood with special guests Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. Of course, this year is looking a little different, but the show must go on and we are certainly excited that the nominees for this years’ award show were announced today. Revealed live from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry House, superstars Luke Combs and Carly Pearce joined forces to announce the nominees on Good Morning America (GMA).

Leading the pack with seven nominations, Miranda Lambert earned nods in multiple categories, including the coveted Entertainer of the Year and Album of the Year. This brings Lambert’s total number of career nominations to 55, making CMA Awards history by surpassing Reba McEntire’s 51 total nominations.

Of course, megastar Luke Combs also walked out with six nominations, including his first entry into the Entertainer of the Year category after winning New Artist of the Year just two years ago. His rise to fame has been nothing short of extraordinary, as his singles continue to be chart-toppers, time after time again.

We especially enjoy the list of exciting artists that are nominated for the New Artist of the Year category including some of our favorites, Jimmie Allen and Morgan Wallen. Female songstresses, Ingrid Andress, Gabby Barrett, and Carly Pearce also received a nod.

Following Good Morning America, Gabby Barrett and Ingrid Andress joined Ashley Eicher for a livestream on CMA’s Facebook and YouTube to announce the remaining nominees. The award show will air on November 11th on ABC at 8PM ET. Brett Young Debuts Brand New, Unreleased Song For His Daughter, “Lady”

In honor of his 3-month-old baby girl, Brett Young debuted “Lady” during his sold-out show in New York City show on The Chapters Tour. Young prefaced his performance talking about how incredible his wife was, and the song that followed brought not only the singer-songwriter to tears, but the fans as well. Although the song is of course, for his daughter Presley, it also is a tribute to his wife Taylor.

“You can always run to daddy, you’ll always be my baby, but look at her baby girl and you’ll learn how to be a lady”

The touching lyrics were accompanied by beautiful pictures of Presley and Taylor on the big screens, only enhancing the moment.

Randy Houser Turns Webster Hall Into a Nashville Honky Tonk

Singer-songwriter, Randy Houser visited Webster Hall in New York City Wednesday night wrapping up the fall leg of his Magnolia Tour, promoting his new album of the same name that came out in January. Joining him was special guest, Paul Cauthen.

Cauthen’s music style is a mix between Eric Church and Johnny Cash, dipping heavily into outlaw-country. He and his band all wore cowboy hats and dark shades, not cracking a smile the entire 45-minute set, fitting the outlaw persona. He performed many songs of his newest album 41, which came out in September including “Holy Ghost Fire”, “Prayed for Rain” and “Angel”. After grabbing a Coors Light and polishing it off in three seconds, the Texas-native covered Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”, riling up the already boisterous crowd. The ceiling disco ball lit up the venue for his final song of the night, “Cocaine Country Dancing” which got everyone swaying along.

Not many artists open with ballads but Houser is unique and began his 90-minute set with the lead single off the new album, “What Whiskey Does”. Here, he displayed his powerful vocals, hitting every high and extended note. He quickly changed the mood of the show, covering Waylon Jennings’ “Good Hearted Woman” and his country music hero, Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again”. Houser told the audience later in the show that Nelson had just recorded one of his songs and decided that he would name his upcoming album after it. He said he wanted Webster Hall to turn into a Nashville honky-tonk for the night. He kept the energy going with his original songs “Boots On” and “My Kinda Country”.

Houser included a lot of songs from Magnolia into the setlist Wednesday night, which is a testament to his confidence in his new music. Most established artists stick to the hits because they know those are the songs that will receive the most positive reactions and keep the fans engaged. The audience showed their fandom as everyone in the crowd sang along to two deep cuts off the new album, “High Time” and his most vulnerable track to date, “No Good Place to Cry”

“I wrote this one a while ago, but I didn’t put it on any albums until this one because I wasn’t ready to sing it just yet. But after I turned 40 I didn’t give a s**t anymore,” the Mississippi-native explained, making light of the gloomy song. “But this was written at a terrible time in my life and I feel comfortable sharing it now.”

The New York City fans were in for a surprise with the next one as Grammy-winning, singer-songwriter, Miranda Lambert came out to sing Loretta Lynn’s part in Conway Twitty’s “After the Fire is Gone”. Lambert married NYC police officer, Brendan McLoughlin last year and since then the two split their residency between Nashville and The Big Apple.

The next two songs any country fan would recognize; two of Houser’s biggest hits “We Went” and “How Country Feels”. New York Country 94.7 radio host, Jesse Addy told the crowd before the show that “How Country Feels” was the first song they played when the station dedicated itself to country music. Both songs went number one on the Billboard Country Airplay chart.

After some pleading, Houser got Lambert to come back on stage to sing background on another new song “No Stone Unturned”, which he admitted was one of his favorite songs off Magnolia. Cauthen came out on stage as well to sing with Houser.

“I wrote this song about self-discovery…The biggest thing I learned about learning anything about yourself is that you don’t know s**t about yourself and you don’t learn anything about yourself if you’re looking.”

After performing “Mama Don’t Know” from the new album, Houser dedicated his ballad “Like a Cowboy” to the military and first responders, as it is a song about perseverance and trying to hold on to loved ones. “Nobody knows more about trying to hang on to a relationship when somebody is gone all the time. In that situation, you don’t know if they’re gonna come back and they don’t know either.” After this performance, it became clear that Houser has one of the best, most beautiful traditional country voices in the business.

For the encore, Houser and his band performed an extended jam-band version of the honky-tonk track “Whole Lotta Quit” off Magnolia. He ended the night with another number one song in “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight”.

Miranda Lambert Celebrates ‘Wildcard’ Album Release at iHeart NYC

One of the most decorated country artists of her generation, Miranda Lambert just released her seventh studio album entitled Wildcard. The record is the lyricist’s homecoming back to her iconic sound and clever song-writing. To celebrate the longevity of her career and the release of the new record, Lambert and her band headed to iHeartRadio theater in downtown Manhattan to celebrate with an intimate group of fans. NYCountry Swag was there to celebrate her monumental feat.

The first thirty minutes was hosted by radio DJ, Brooke Taylor, as the songs and interview were broadcasted live on the radio station. Taylor and Lambert talked about her success as a female country artist, her favorite songs off the new project, as well as, the songstress’ responsibility as a mentor to other female artists in the industry, which she embraces fully.

During the broadcast, Lambert sang “Mama’s Broken Heart,” and three songs off the new LP, including “It All Comes Out in The Wash,” “Bluebird,” and “Tequila Does.” Although all four songs are fun and beautiful in their own right, “Bluebird” was easily the crowd’s favorite, illustrating Lambert’s sentiment that the song is “More of a feeling. It’s just special.”

Lambert really came into her own on stage, breathing a sigh of relief, when the recorded version of the segment was over. She delivered a killer thirty-minute set, playing several songs that spanned her career. According to the singer, “the fans’ feedback [is] all that matters.” Clearly her true fans approved, as the entire crowd sang each and every cut she sang at the top of their lungs.

The performance included songs like “Kerosene,” “Mess with My Head,” “Gunpowder and Lead,” “Heart Like Mine,” and one of her classics “Airstream Song.” Some special moments came towards the end of her set when she coined her new song “White Trash,” her ‘biography’. The song personified Lambert to a T, and fans clearly loved it. “Automatic,” another fan-favorite, had the intimate room feeling like it was Madison Square Garden.

Overall, Lambert proved, yet again, that she does it all for the fans and the betterment of women in country music. She’s a complete professional, and we have no doubt that she will find even more success with her upcoming ‘2020 Wildcard Tour’, kicking off this January in Tupelo, Mississippi.

Miranda Lambert Releases Fan Favorite: “Tequila Does”

Miranda Lambert pays homage to her Texas descent in her latest release “Tequila Does” off of her forthcoming album Wildcard; her first collaboration with producer Jay Joyce. The single compliments the singer’s catalogue well by commemorating the steel guitar and a propulsive drum reverberation. The country-rock consumed track marks the seventh song to be premiered ahead of the album’s release date on November 1st.

Lambert exploits all expectations unmet by men but kissed by personified poison who has the ability to never let anybody down. She sings: “Cause he don’t love me like tequila does / Nobody can / He don’t give me that border town buzz / Like tequila does / I’d sure like to find / A cowboy tonight / To get me back in the saddle / But the boys around here, drink domestic beer / They’re all hat, no cattle / But I won’t sleep alone / ‘Cause my old pal Patron, is taking me home tonight.”

“The House That Built Me” artist stated in a recent press release, “‘Tequila Does’ is country. And country music makes me happy,” said Lambert of the track. “No matter how rock or edgy or scorned you can get, when you come back to a country song with a steel guitar, it makes my soul feel like it’s on fire.”

Written by Lambert, Jack Ingram and Jon Randall, “Tequila Does” follows singles “It All Comes Out in the Wash,” “Bluebird,” Locomotive,” ”Mess With My Head, ”Pretty Bitchin’” and “Way Too Pretty For Prison.”

“Tequila Does” has been a fan favorite on Lambert’s Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars Tour with supporting acts Tenille Townes, Elle King, Ashley McBryde, Caylee Hammack, Pistol Annies and Maren Morris each on selected dates running through November 22nd. In early 2020, Lambert kicks off the Wildcard Tour with supporting guests Cody Johnson and LANCO.

2019, The Year of Women in Country Music

As country music has become more mainstream, we seemingly have forgotten about the powerful female forces that once ruled the genre. However, this year, 2019, female entertainers seemed to have taken back their power and their voices. 2019 was the year of women empowerment and women (and men) supporting other women. From all-female tours to opening gigs to being the CEO of a record label to exciting podcasts, women in country music are proving that they are going to fight for their right to be heard.

Here are six reasons that this is the year of women in country music!

1. All Female Tours.

This year superstar Carrie Underwood pulled off the unthinkable and headlined an all-female tour, playing at the most coveted venues across the country. Taking supporting acts, trio Runaway June and duo Maddie & Tae on the road with her, she sold-out shows across the nation, including the iconic Madison Square Garden in NYC. Other female artists are following in her footsteps. Maren Morris’ highly successful ‘GIRL: The World Tour’ boasts an all-female lineup. For the first leg, Cassadee Pope and RaeLynn joined the songstress, while the second leg featured Hailey Whitters and Kassi Ashton. Finally, Miranda Lambert welcomed newcomers, Caylee Hammack, Tenille Townes, and Ashley McBryde, along with Elle King and Maren Morris to perform as part of her ‘2019 Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour’. We love seeing the female tours that are popping up, and we cannot wait until it becomes the norm in country music.

2. Number One Hits and Chart Accomplishments.

Unfortunately when it comes to country radio, female artists are working hard to get the recognition and airtime they deserve. However, we took some giant leaps forward in 2019 when both Kelsea Ballerini’s “Miss Me More” and Maren Morris’ “GIRL” reached the top spot on the charts and just this week, Carrie Underwood’s “Southbound” claimed the coveted number one spot. Although only three songs by a female artist have gone number one on country radio this year, it is still a magnificent feat. Ballerini and Morris, who were both co-writers on their smash hits found success with songs that are both empowering and emulate confidence, two concepts that are gaining in popularity in the country genre. Underwood also co-wrote the summertime smash, “Southbound”. Furthermore, Runaway June’s radio single “Buy My Own Drinks” is the first single by a female country music trio in more than a decade to break into the Top 5 on the Country charts. This is progress!

3. CEO of a Record Label.

We proudly highlighted the extraordinary Nicolle Galyon in one of our Women of the Month features. She is a leader in empowering women in the industry and advocating for an equal playing field. Galyon was recently announced as the head of a brand new record label in Nashville named ‘Songs & Daughters.’ Big Loud Records out of Nashville is partnering with Galyon on this new imprint to sign rising female artists. This “music house for female creatives,” as she calls it, will definitely change the game. We can’t wait to catch the flagship artist, Madison Kozak this December when she opens up for Morgan Evans.

4. The Highwomen.

Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, and Natalie Hemby recently joined forces to compose an all-female phenomenon entitled The Highwomen. The four magnificent singer-songwriters created an unprecedented musical group, where there is not a definitive lead. Additionally, each of the members have successful careers of their own. In celebration of women-hood in general and of course in country music, these talented ladies challenge societal standards, break and create molds, and of course exceed expectations. They are blazing the path for more female artists in the industry, inviting all artists to come as they are. Take a listen to their self-titled debut album, The Highwomen here.

5. Inspiring Music.

Although we appreciate a good break-up anthem and some clever songs about boys or cheating, we are loving the shift in what is acceptable for women to sing about. Both Morris with “GIRL” and Ballerini with “homecoming queen?” sing about their vulnerabilities and question their self-confidence, but somehow beautifully remind girls that it’s okay to be themselves, encourage us to love ourselves, and remind us all that we are just trying to do our best. Other artists, such as our 6 favorite rising female artists and our 6 undiscovered female artists that we are loving are doing the same, writing and recording songs with substance, heart, and with a greater purpose.

6. Women Supporting Women.

We believe that this is the key reason for why women are finding more success this year. Podcasts, such as radio personality, Elaina Smith’s ‘Breaking Thru,’ formally called ‘Women Want to Hear Women,” and radio programming such as Radio Disney’s ‘LET THE GIRLS PLAY,’ are shattering stereotypes and evoking necessary conversations about equality. Here at NYCountry Swag, we highlight a different woman in the industry each month in our ‘Woman of the Month’ segment with the hopes of bringing you stories from inspiring women who are chasing their dreams and who have worked hard to be successful. Additionally, we host our annual ‘Babes, Booze and Brunch’ event, and this Friday, we will be hosting our final sail, featuring two incredible female artists, Kalie Shorr and Lauren Davidson, all in the name of supporting other women.

With a little over two months left in the year, we hope to continue to see and champion women in the industry as they achieve the success and accolades they deserve. The CMA Awards, taking place on November 13th will also honor women with three female hosts, Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, and Reba. And just yesterday, Miranda Lambert penned a note on social media in support of Carrie Underwood taking home the big award of the night, Entertainer of the Year.

We don’t need to wear anyone else’s crown, as Maren says, “there’s enough to go around.”

Miranda Lambert, LANCO & Cody Johnson Announce Wildcard Tour

Miranda Lambert is currently on the road for her Roadside Bars & Pink Guitars Tour with powerhouse female artists including Maren Morris, the Pistol Annies, Tenille Townes, Ashley McBryde, Elle King, and Caylee Hammack. Just because Lambert is busy on tour and releasing songs from her next album does not mean she is not getting the next thing ready for fans.

On (September 20th), Lambert announced she is heading back on the road with Cody Johnson and LANCO, with Randy Rogers Band and Parker McCollum on select dates, for “The Wildcard Tour.” Named after Lambert’s new album coming out November 1st, the tour features 27 dates throughout the U.S. and Canada.

“The essence of a wildcard is always having something up your sleeve, in whatever capacity that means to you,” shares Lambert in a press release. “It is universal. Which is why I’m excited to kick off this tour with an incredible group of talented artists. We’re going to have a blast!”

Being the animal lover she is, Lambert is teaming up with Tractor Supply Company alongside her MuttNation Foundation campaign, Fill the Little Red Wagon. In each city, fans are encouraged to help shelter pets by donating dog food, treats, supplies, and cash at each venue’s entrance before the show. If helping loving animals is not an incentive on its own, supporters who complete a sign-up form at the donation point will also be entered to win a meet & greet with the “Way Too Pretty For Prison” singer herself.

Continuing shows across the country in 2020, there are so many opportunities to see her in action as well as some amazing opening acts. Before you go to any of her shows make sure you have listened to her new hits, as she is releasing songs off her upcoming album. “It All Comes Out in the Wash,” “Bluebird,” “Pretty Bitchin’,” and “Way Too Pretty For Prison” are all sneak peeks of what is to come in November.
