Madison Kozak Releases New Music with “What Does Sorry Mean”

Madison Kozak’s new song, “What Does Sorry Mean”  is out now, September 9th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new song below.

Following up last month’s honest “Loud House” is the incredibly classic and bittersweet “What Does Sorry Mean”. The song is about the five-letter-overused apology and trying to define what such a word means this time around. Sonically, the song is a ballad that utilizes major and minor chords very interestingly, making for a more compelling and poignant delivery.

“Is it just the 5 little words // A band-aid to slap on the hurt // a foolproof way to end a fight”

Kozak repeats this idea throughout, asking her partner for a definition of sorry. She sings about being confused and even angry about the apologies thrown her way, and that anger hasn’t really been seen or heard in her previous releases. “The more that you say it // The less I believe it’s true”, she sings at the end of the song.

This song marks the final release of Kozak’s newest singles. The Songs & Daughters pioneer artist has released now four songs in the past four months and returned to the music scene with major feelings and minor chords successfully.

Madison Kozak Shares New Song “Loud House”

Madison Kozak’s new track, “Loud House”  is out now, August 5th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new song below.

Madison Kozak follows up last month’s clever “One Girl To Another” is the incredibly honest and nostalgic “Loud House”. The song was written by Kozak years ago, and the message of the song still holds true, if not more so now that time has passed. Kozak grew up as one-of-eight children, and although she reflects on her childhood with love, she is sincere in acknowledging its difficulties of it as well.

“Growin’ up in a loud house // You get used to the sound // Happy or sad // There’s always a crowd // And when you’re sixteen // You can’t wait to move out // Out of a loud house”

In a lot of ways, it’s a continuation and older sister of 2019 release “Household”. While that story is more reminiscent and poignant, “Loud House” cuts straight to the heart of growing up. It’s the best and the most difficult, and you can love your family while processing the dynamics and patterns you grew up learning.

“Mom and Dad are shoutin’ // Throwing words around // Don’t know what it’s about // But it don’t sound good // And she starts crying // He peels out the drive // And then it’s all quiet in the neighborhood”

“I wrote ‘Loud House’ within the first year of signing my publishing deal, so I’ve been sitting on it for a minute,” Kozak shares. “It felt very special from the day I wrote it. I remember running across the street to Big Loud and playing it right after I wrote it, because I was just so excited. It felt like an actual piece of my heart in song form.”

The production, melody, and Kozak’s vocal delivery on this song is some of her strongest work yet. This tune is a showstopper in a way that her breakout “First Last Name” is. The sonics are slow enough to really digest the lyrics and the story, and every detail is nuanced and stunning.

It’s no surprise that Madison Kozak continues to release great song after great song, and it seems she has no plans of stopping. It’s refreshing to hear a nostalgic perspective that hits both the sweet memories and the ones harder to swallow in a more modern country song. The longing for peace and less chaos growing up to not being able to navigate the quiet is a very realistic narrative and one that should be explored more often.

Madison Kozak Drops New Track “One Girl To Another”

Madison Kozak’s new track, “One Girl To Another”  is out now, June 24th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new song below.

Following up last month’s heartbreaking country ballad “If We Were A Country Song” is the clever “One Girl To Another”. The song opens with a stunning piano arrangement before the lyrics and a finger-picking guitar comes in. Kozak sings that it’d be easy to hate her partner’s ex, because so many girls do – it’s natural – but, she’s actually grateful for her.

“From one girl to another // I owe it all to you // For saying you weren’t right for each other // And breaking his whole heart in two”

This concept is simple and sweet enough to make for a great country song, but the hook doesn’t stop there. “Cause when you said goodbye // He didn’t know // It’d be the last time that he’d ever go // From one girl to another.” It’s incredibly honest, and a unique way of exerting confidence in your relationship.

Kozak continues to be grateful for her new love’s ex. “Maybe it’s selfish of me // But I wouldn’t have been ready // To love him back then // So I’m thankful you did.” At this point in the song, the production truly grows, and has gorgeous harmonies and more soaring strings in the bridge. It’s a great song to listen to for the summer sonically, but it is also a pretty witty concept that will leave listeners intrigued.

Madison Kozak continues to release great song after great song, and it’s exciting to see what she will do next. She has a unique narrative and perspective when it comes to her songwriting, and her soulful voice elevates every story to a whole new level.

Madison Kozak Releases Brand New Song “If We Were A Country Song”

Madison Kozak’s new song, “If We Were A Country Song”  is out now, May 20th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new song below.

Madison Kozak entered the music scene as a brand-new college graduate with a unique voice and a story to tell. Her previously released songs are absolutely fantastic, and her first new release in over two years, “If We Were A Country Song” was well worth the wait.

The song opens with a stunning solitaire piano in ¾, immediately drawing you into the moody, heartbroken state that Kozak is in. The first line hits you with the hurt almost immediately:

“If we were a country song // We would be the kind people break up to // Then make love all night.”

The story continues into a chorus with incredibly interesting harmonic choices. It’s classic, and yet her use of major and minor chords does not go unnoticed.

“What a mess we made, but what a work of art // Would’ve gone all the way // To number one on the chart // If we were a country song.”

In the second verse, she talks about the song being in ¾ time, alluding to the fact that this is the very country song she is singing about.

“I hope this next chapter of music brings connection,” Kozak shares in a press release. “That’s something I’ve been craving so much, and music is a connector for me. So, I go to some pretty honest places with these songs. And I hope that the listeners feel that honesty and that they’ll meet me there.”

Madison Kozak is one of the most promising young artists and writers in country music today and this new chapter of music proves that she is poised for greatness.

5 Unreleased Cuts From Instagram That We Are Loving

Maybe it’s just us, but it seems that it is now trendy for country artists to give fans a taste of what’s to come via Instagram. We are noticing that so many singer-songwriters are previewing unreleased materials and even demos to fans via their social media, just to keep fans excited.

Whatever the reason, we are absolutely loving it! We shared some of our favorites last year, here and here, and now we’re sharing some of our new faves from the past few weeks.

1. “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old”- Luke Combs

One of our saving graces during this past year, Luke Combs continues to be a man that is all about the fans! Recently, he posted a video of himself singing a new unreleased tune that could easily fit into his latest project. “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old” is a must record!

2. “Mama Prayed For”- Meghan Patrick

One of the most unique picks on our list, Meghan Patrick’s unreleased song “Mama Prayed For” is a masterpiece in the making. The Canadian country star is on the brink of success here in the states. It is only a matter of time! This particular song features her insane vocal range, her unique songwriting, and her ability to relate through her music.

3. “No Hard Feelings”- Old Dominion

Honestly, Old Dominion can do no wrong in our eyes. “No Hard Feelings” has already got fans asking when it is going to be released. Clearly, in the songwriting mode, the men of Old Dominion are cranking out demo after demo this year, and we are here for it! This unreleased jam will be a perfect addition to their setlist.

4. “Perfect Imperfections”- Tucker Beathard

Tucker Beathard has been quietly doing his thing on social media all quarantine long. He is not one to fight for attention, continuously proving that he is an artist above all else. Although there were a few unreleased tracks to choose from, “Perfect Imperfections” captured our hearts. The mellow and emotional tune is all about love and recognizing all the details about your partner. Swoon-worthy for sure!

5. Untitled- Madison Kozak

Madison Kozak is one of our favorite singer-songwriters on the scene right now. Her voice is strong, yet ethereal, but it is her ability to craft a lyric that gets us every time. She has been having a lot of fun sharing her writes and demos on social media, but this untitled song is tugging at our heartstrings the most.

Keep up with NY Country Swag, as we will be sure to let you know ASAP, if any of these songs are released! Fans can join our Weekly Round-Up e-newsletter here, for the latest in country music and more news about future releases.

3rd Annual NYCountry Swag Presents Babes, Booze & Brunch Recap

Sunday, March 8th NYCountry Swag celebrated International Women’s Day by hosting our annual Babes, Booze & Brunch event at Refinery Rooftop. The weather was absolutely perfect, 60 and sunny, which allowed the rooftop’s glass atrium to open overhead, making the views of the Empire State Building particularly excellent.

Our VIP guests arrived early to enjoy a delicious brunch buffet and build their own mimosa and bloody marys, powered by Tito’s Vodka and Jack Daniel’s Gentleman Jack. DJ Mouse provided female empowered focused music while our guests dined and took in the views.

This year was our biggest and best event yet, partnering with Nicolle Galyon and her female-focused record label, Songs & Daughters. After a quick introduction from NYCountry Swag’s Stephanie and Christina thanking our sponsors, Galyon took the stage to speak about how through the course of her life she went from being a tomboy to really discovering her girly side after she became a mother.

Babes Booze & Brunch 3

Her thoughtful words about NYCountry Swag and our women-run company inspired the crowd and she told the epic story about how when she first heard our 2020 Artist to Watch and featured artist of the day, Madison Kozak that she decided to start a record label just so she could work with her.

Nicolle Galyon

She was excited to introduce her flagship artist to the room full of women who probably hadn’t heard her perform live before. Kozak took the stage next and sang “Little Bit Of You”, “Click”, “First Last Name”, “Phases” as well as her current single “OMG ILY”. She also got the crowd singing along with covers of “Beautiful Soul” by Jesse McCartney, John Denver’s “Country Roads, Take Me Home” mashed with Darius Rucker’s “Wagon Wheel” and closed out her incredible 60-minute acoustic set with the ultimate girl power anthem, Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”.

Madison Kozak

After her set, DJ Mouse spun some of the best music created by females across genres as our guests stopped by our braid bar hosted by Hair by SavLeann, nail art station by Art Nail NYC, Henna with Naty by Nature and took pictures in our photo booth.

NYCountry Swag’s 2020 Artists To Watch

The New York Country Swag team loves to support rising artists and introduce our followers to the best new music in the genre. Since our inception four years ago we have named rising stars like Russell Dickerson, Luke Combs, Brett Young, Jordan Davis, Mitchell Tenpenny, and Jimmie Allen as our Artists to Watch. Check out our picks in 2017, 2018, and 2019 before checking out the 10 artists we picked to have a huge 2020 below.

Parker McCollum

10. Parker McCollum – This Texas native may have just released his first song on a major label, “Pretty Heart” this past summer after signing with MCA Nashville/UMG Nashville but in the past, he has independently delivered two full-length projects. Focusing on the depth and artistry behind songwriting, McCollum has found a clever balance between traditional Texas country and what is coming out of modern Nashville. We are looking forward to more new music in 2020 and to catch a live show.

For Fans Of: Cody Johnson, Riley Green

Listen: “Pretty Heart”

Stay Connected: @ParkerMcCollum

Madison Kozak

9. Madison Kozak – Growing up in Ontario but moving to Nashville when she was only 14 years old, Kozak has been chasing the music dream, honing in on her incredible ability to write a song that is filled with emotions for years. We first heard of the songstress in May we were instantly hooked and since then 2019 was a whirlwind for the budding star, signing a record deal as the flagship artist on a female-driven label, Songs & Daughters and touring the country on three different tours.  Label head, Nicolle Galyon in partnership with Big Loud Records saw something special in this songwriter artist after hearing “First Last Name”, a song she wrote for her father and ever since has been releasing exceptional songs. She kicks off the new year by heading overseas to tour with Chase Rice.

For Fans Of: Kelsea Ballerini, Carrie Underwood

Listen: “OMG ILY”

Stay Connected: @Madison_Kozak

King Calaway

8. King Calaway – Last January we were introduced to a brand new band comprised of six talented musicians from different places, Caleb Miller (Ohio), Chris Deaton (Nashville), Simon Dumas (Gibraltar), Jordan Harvey (Scotland), Chad Michael Jervis (Delaware), and Austin Luther (Minnesota). One of the very first time they played for fans before their music was released, King Calaway performed a showcase with NYCountry Swag in New York City and all in attendance were blown away.  Their impeccable harmonies, catchy tunes, and larger than life personalities have since caught the attention of country music fans across the nation. Their debut record, Rivers features 12 tracks written by some of Nashville’s biggest songwriters and covers an array of topics.

For Fans Of: One Direction, Rascal Flatts

Listen: “Rivers”

Stay Connected: @KingCalaway

Chris Bandi

7. Chris Bandi – When a song is streamed 60 million times, you know there is something special about it. St. Louis native, Nashville based artist and songwriter Chris Bandi is pushing his major-label debut, “Man Enough Now” to country radio this year and the tale rings true of realizing your mistakes, owning them and hoping for a second chance. Bandi will hit the road with Matt Stell in the upcoming months and sources say plans to release an EP as well.

For Fans Of: Gavin DeGraw, Chris Lane

Listen: “Man Enough Now”

Stay Connected: @ChrisBandi

Ingrid Andress

6. Ingrid Andress – We first caught songwriter/artist Ingrid Andress last February during an NYC showcase right after she was signed to Warner Music Nashville/Atlantic Records and her unique presence, storytelling ability, and hilarious realness caught our attention immediately. With songs like “More Hearts Than Mine”, “Both”, and “Lady Like”, Andress pushes the boundaries of topics usually discussed in the country format, forcing new followers to pay attention. She was named one of CRS New Faces for the class of 2020, a prestigious honor and she joins Dan + Shay on the first leg of their arena tour in 2020.

For Fans Of: Kacey Musgraves, Ashley McBryde

Listen: “More Hearts Than Mine”

Stay Connected: @IngridAndress

Ross Ellis

5. Ross Ellis –  Although a bit more undiscovered than the rest of our list, Ross Ellis has a powerhouse, unique voice and his latest single “Buy and Buy” is compelling and begs for repeat spins. By weaving a powerful visual of religion, addiction, and wasted time, “Buy and Buy” is as profound as it is innovative. As a songwriter, Ellis co-wrote one of Tim McGraw’s latest singles, “Neon Church” and a song on Home Free’s new album, Dive Bar Saints called “Dreamer” but in 2020 we hope to hear new songs from Ellis as we continue to champion rising artists and songwriters like him.

For Fans Of: Brett Young, Dan + Shay

Listen: “Buy and Buy”

Avenue Beat 2020 Artists to Watch

4. Avenue Beat – Our most unique, fresh, and different act on this year’s Artists to Watch is Avenue Beat. Comprised of three girls from Illinois, Sami Bearden, Savana Santos, and Sam Backoff they are original and their creative new wave country is as endearing as it is inventive. Their harmonies, melodies, and frankly genius lyrics are relatable to a niche of young women that are thirsty for someone to sing about what they are going through. Signed to Big Machine Label Group’s Valory Music Co. in partnership with Tape Room Records they released their debut self-titled EP in July and toured with Mason Ramsey in 2019. If you are looking for some sass with a side of sensational lyrics, look no further than Avenue Beat.

For Fans Of: Walker Hayes, Kelsea Ballerini

Listen: “Be A Bro”

Stay Connected: @AvenueBeat

Jameson Rodgers

3. Jameson Rodgers – Last February we interviewed Jameson Rodgers for our Swag Spotlight feature, right after he released his EP which featured his break out hit, “Some Girls”. This Mississippi native is now planted firmly in Nashville, writing and creating music as a Sony Music Nashville artist and has toured with Luke Combs on his Beer Never Broke My Heart tour and just announced that in 2020 he will embark on his very first headlining tour. Relatable lyrics that are set to a modern-day twang, Rodgers has already garnered a ton of fans and hopefully the new year we can expect a full-length album.

For Fans Of: Jon Pardi, Luke Combs

Listen: “Some Girls”

Stay Connected: @JamesonRodgers

Gabby Barrett

2. Gabby Barrett – She may have become a household name because of her stint on American Idol but Gabby Barrett is showing Nashville and the country music community that women want to hear a female write a song from her own perspective. Her debut radio single, “I Hope” not only features her sultry voice but has a twist in the chorus that will make men and women fall in love with her honest take on a bad breakup. Having toured with Chris Lane, Barrett is already included in major festival line ups including Stagecoach, Tortuga, and New York’s own TrailBlazer.

For Fans Of: Maren Morris, Lauren Alaina

Listen: “I Hope”

Stay Connected: @GabbyBarrett_

HARDY 2020 Artists to Watch

1. HARDY – Already having a huge break out year in 2019, HARDY celebrated four number one songs as a songwriter, “God’s Country”, “I Don’t Know About You”, “Simple”, and “Up Down”. He also released one of the most prolific albums of the year, HIXTAPE Vol. 1 which features 17 different artists, all singing about growing up in a small town. Emerging as an artist, HARDY has created a persona that makes you envy his Mississippi upbringing, making ‘redneck’ cool. In October we caught his sold-out headlining NYC show and just announced, the songwriter and artist will join Cole Swindell and Thomas Rhett on the Center Point Road tour which will make it’s away across the country this summer.

For Fans Of: Morgan Wallen, Florida Georgia Line

Morgan Evans and Madison Kozak Captivate a New York City Crowd

Back in 2017, we caught Morgan Evans when he played for Opry Circle in the City, a free show in the middle of Bryant Park, prior to his debut album, debut radio single – “Kiss Somebody”, which hit the top of the charts, and before he was married to superstar Kelsea Ballerini.  Although that wasn’t the last time we got to see him perform, last night Evans headlined his own tour at Bowery Ballroom and the fans packed the room, making it the most magical night.

madison kozak nyc morgan evans

To kick things off, an artist we have been very excited about since we first picked her song “Graduation Day” as our May Monthly Pick, Madison Kozak took the stage in New York City for the very first time. Kozak is the flagship artist at a new, female-driven label, Songs and Daughters which is run by Nicolle Galyon and is in partnership with Big Loud Records. The singer-songwriter has been in Nashville for 8 years and has absolutely perfected her songwriting craft, which was evident by the tracks she’s released in 2019. As she took the stage, we could see from our spot above the audience that not only were people packing the venue early but that they were just as excited as we were to catch this magical artist live for the first time.

Her set included tracks, “Little Bit Of You” mashed with a snippet of Whitney Houston’s  “I Wanna Dance With Somebody”, “Click”, and  “Phases”. The Ontario native also carefully selected the perfect mash-up of Lauv’s “I Like Me Better” and Jesse McCartney’s throwback of “Beautiful Soul”. If the audience wasn’t paying attention before, they were instantly engaged hearing songs they all knew and loved.

Her confidence and banter with the crowd far surpassed an artist who has only been on the road this past year, proving she has a pivotal quality to engage with an audience, make them listen and pay attention to her own personal style and songs. “Everybody always said ‘it only takes three minutes to change your life’ and I never really believed them until this song came along and you guys it’s been a crazy year.”  She was vulnerable in her storytelling, especially during her current radio single “First Last Name”.  She closed her set with the infectious and incredibly catchy, “OMG ILY” which she performed for our most recent Swag Session. Check back soon for the full video. We can’t wait to continue to champion Madison and her journey.

Morgan Evans NYC

Just a few minutes later, Morgan Evans took the stage and the truly magical night continued. Seeing the packed house sing along to every single song he performed, which kicked off with the bop, “Young Again” and included the love song “I Do” and his current single “Diamonds” made for a memorable night.

Evans, who was just named one of the 2020 New Faces of Country Music for the upcoming Country Radio Seminar interacted with the crowd, all while playing the pedal loop, which allows him to record each and every sound throughout the song and put it on loop, making his solo performance sound and feel like there was a full band behind him.

He successfully mashed together his track “Everything Changes” with a flawless rendition of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin'” as well as the Beatles’ “Hey Jude” which certainly went over well with the crowd. He also performed “Hooked”, a song that Dylan Scott performed but Evans was a co-writer on. “I just want to chill it out for like 3 minutes and 9 seconds right now, and I promise we’ll get back to the party after that but, I want to play you my favorite song that I’ve written, it was the first song I wrote for my now wife,” Evans explained before tenderly singing “Dance With Me”.

Feeling the full New York City Christmas spirit, Evans acoustically sang a snippet of the famous holiday song “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, as well as a cover of “We Will Rock You”, “Dancin’ In The Dark” and after telling a story about going to see Keith Urban in his home of Australia, “Somebody Like You”.

Morgan Evans NYC

One of the most entertaining songs of the night, “Day Drunk” had fans clapping to the beat and singing the chorus as loud as they could. His encore included his “tech guy” Keith, on guitar as they closed the night with a second performance of “Young Again” but this time, the bluegrass version. The intense guitar solo and the crescendo at the end of the song made for the perfect way to end an already incredible night of country music in New York City.

Morgan Evans heads to Hawaii at the top of 2020 to perform with Old Dominion while Madison Kozak will head overseas with Chase Rice. For all of Morgan’s tour dates head to www.morganevansmusic.com and to keep up with Madison’s tour dates head to https://www.madisonkozak.com/
