Who Is Josh Ross? The Story Behind His Journey to Country Music

Who is Josh Ross? The singer-songwriter joined us to chat about his journey to country music. Get to know the rising star here…

who-is-josh-ross

The Beginning:

As ya’ll know, we love championing new artists in country music. Today, we get to introduce you to Josh Ross, an incredible singer-songwriter from Ontario, Canada. We chatted with Ross about his journey, his move to Nashville, and his current new music, out now.

“I’ve always loved music. […] It’s a big part of my family,” began the singer. Although his father loved Rock & Roll and his mother loved artists like U2 and Bruce Springsteen, Ross’ first love was the country music genre. “I had a family friend that introduced me to Steve Earle’s music when I was five or six years old,” shared the singer. “I was kind of that weird kid in high school listening to Steve Earle’s music and friends were like what is this, but by the time I got to 12th grade, country music ended up being cool.”

Despite an early love for music, Ross focused on sports during his upbringing. In another life, the singer played hockey, was a professional motocross rider, and even played college football. After some unfortunate injuries kept him sidelined, Ross gravitated towards music. “When I was in my first year of college, a buddy of mine actually had a guitar and I would just sing along, and I started to realize I wasn’t half as bad as I thought.”

From there on, Ross would play music for fun, whether it be singing karaoke or playing at small coffee shops. Eventually, he got entered into an Emerging Artists Festival in Ontario, which led him to bigger stages and a newfound dream. “I went from playing a coffee shop on a Thursday to I got entered into this festival, and got into the top 8 of this, and on Friday, I got to play for close to 7000, 8000 people, and that was my first real show.”

The Turning Point:

The festival and his supporters convinced Ross that he had what it took to succeed in the country music industry. “It was a big eyeopener to find myself as an artist, figure out what I wanted to say, and what I wanted to sound like,” he shared. Ross was encouraged to head to Nashville to work on crafting his skills as a songwriter. After several trips back and forth, the singer decided to relocate to music city.

“I just knew that I needed to surround myself there and if you want to be the best, you have to be around the best,” shared Ross, adding later, “Nashville is one of those special places, where I can go to the house next door and that guy is a great guitar player and I go to the next house, and that guy makes tracks and stuff.”

Since 2018, Ross has worked hard at crafting his songwriting talent and discovering his own type of artistry. Combining his love of many genres, he has cultivated a sound that is all his own. “In a weird way, I think I always wrote music without knowing it. When I was a kid, I would write in a binder and write down stories about what was going on in my life,” shared the singer, when asked about his desire to write his own music. He also added, “There’s definitely an emotional side and a fun side, and I think that really translates to what I want to say, and something that people can relate to.”

Today:

With just a few songs out, Ross has already shown fans that he is the real deal. Most recently, the singer-songwriter released his first ballad, a song called “First Taste of Gone” Written by Ross with Mason Thornley, the song conveys a personal and heartbreaking message. It depicts the feelings we all go through when we finally get to the point, where a relationship is truly over. Vocally driven, Ross’ voice is the perfect combination of gravelly and strong. Lyrically, the song is poignant and deeply emotive.

According to Ross, “I was going through a lot in my life and my personal life with changes. […] It was just one of those songs where I felt like you have that moment where you have to go out again without that person, and it’s a weird feeling being like “well, I don’t have to call someone when I go home tonight” or “she’s not going to be there.”

With each and every release, Ross is cultivating his own sound, clearly influenced by his love of pop-punk music, current industry hitmakers, (HARDY, Morgan Wallen, Thomas Rhett) and rock elements. We look forward to more new music from the singer, coming later this year! Be on the lookout and keep Ross on your radar.

Carrie Underwood’s New Song “Ghost Story” is HERE

Carrie Underwood’s new song, “Ghost Story” is out now, March 18th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

A new Carrie Underwood era has arrived! Today, March 18, Underwood released ‘Ghost Story’, the first single from a highly anticipated new album (title still unknown) and it was worth the wait. Though the country superstar has released multiple projects in the past few years including two Christian albums, My Gift and My Savior, and multiple duets with DAN + SHAY, NEEDTOBREATHE, Jason Aldean, and Latin pop star David Bisbal, “Ghost Story” is the first new solo country track since Underwood released her 6th studio album, Cry Pretty back in September of 2018.

The writers behind “Ghost Story”, David Garcia, Hillary Lindsey, and Josh Kear, are all credited with multiple smash hits in Underwood’s impressive discography, and this track is bound to be no different. Produced by GRAMMY-winning producer David Garcia and Underwood herself, “Ghost Story” is a break up anthem about haunting a lost lover. With its catchy chorus, descriptive imagery, and unique rhythms unlike anything the American Idol alum, mom of two, and entrepreneur has done before, the song showcases what Underwood does best; using her incomparable vocal range to tell a story. The track is dynamic and engaging from beginning to end, and the driving drum beat keeps the energy up even in the softer sections of the song.

Carrie Underwood’s new song, “Ghost Story” is available now, March 18th on all streaming platforms

“You’ll hear a noise, swear you know the voice // And you’ll chase it down the stairs // You’ll look around, not a single sound // ‘Cause there’s no one even there // I’m gonna be your ghost story // That keeping you up all night memory // I’ll be haunting you, you’ll be wanting me // I’m gonna be your ghost story”

Playing new songs live for fans is always a highlight for artists on the road, and Underwood could get that chance as soon as next week when she returns to Las Vegas to resume her REFLECTION residency at Resorts World. With residency performances scheduled through the end of May and a new album on the way, Underwood will have plenty of opportunities to play around with visual and performance elements to make “Ghost Story” a tour favorite.

Hailey Whitters: ‘RAISED’ – Album Review

Hailey Whitters third studio album, RAISED is out now, March 18th on all streaming platforms. Check out our full review and listen to the new album below.

Hailey Whitters has been an artist to watch for many years, and after making a splash with her sophomore record The Dream, Whitters has returned with a brand new 17-track project, RAISED.

The album opens with an instrumental in Latin titled “Ad Astra Per Alas Porci”, which translates to “Pigasus”, a pig that flies – a trope that Whitters holds close to her heart. Pigasus is the name of Whitters’ personal record imprint, so this cinematic opener really sets the scene of learning her backstory sonically. It ties in perfectly to the title track “Raised”, an airy, nostalgic song with fabulous imagery about being raised as a Heartland girl. You can hear her Chicks influence, but it also feels like an extension of “Heartland”. It’s no coincidence that Whitters wrote this song with the same co-writers. It’s classically Hailey; it sounds like a sunrise.

Much of the first half of the record are stellar story-songs written specifically about Whitters’ childhood growing up in Iowa. Yet, the specificity remains relatable. Between the perfectly fiddle-heavy “Big Family” and John Mellencamp-esque “Middle of America” (the latter of which features alternative country band American Aquarium); and the bonafide fan favorite “Boys Back Home”, all are pulled from the life that she has lived so far. Whitters is a strong songwriter by herself, but she also collaborated with some of the best songwriters in Nashville on the project. From the storytelling queen, Lori McKenna to her record–label head, Nicolle Galyon to the insanely legendary, Tom Douglas, it’s no wonder each lyric has such prominent meaning.

All 17 tracks are evocative, witty, and intentional. “Boys Back Home”, which she wrote with frequent collaborators Brandy Clark and Jessie Jo Dillon captures the essence of hometown scarcity. “When I think about all of the men that I know // They’re ain’t none like the boys back home”, she sings with a shine in her voice on the chorus.

Another highlight on RAISED is “College Town”, an anthem for all those who took the big leap of faith to further their education. “She’ll come home for Christmas and cut off her hair // Got a whole new opinion her parents don’t share”. The way Whitters approaches the song is different from most country songs about college and is still authentically country.

The interlude that goes into “Our Grass Is Legal” has Whitters’ Aunt Cindy on the phone with a potential customer at the Whitters family turf farm who mistakes their business for one that sells weed. The song that follows it – and is the family businesses’ slogan – “Our Grass Is Legal” is the midwestern, blue-collar anthem of the album. It has a real rocking, slight jazzy groove to it, and will without a doubt be a crowd-pleaser when performed on tour.

The official closer, and another highlight, is the sweet “In A Field Somewhere”. It’s the bookend for the title track and the entire RAISED project. It tells the story of Whitters learning to drive, sneaking off with her friends as a teenager, and even when she got proposed to by her fiancé, fellow Iowan native, and producer, Jake Gear. It’s the perfect closer, and the reprise of the first instrumental finishes it off so wonderfully.

RAISED is a true record, one that is best listened to in order, maybe in the car with the windows down, or at home watching the sunset. Music isn’t made like this anymore, and Hailey Whitters continues to raise the bar in every way for songwriters, musicians, and frankly, music fans everywhere by being herself. RAISED is a love letter to the midwest as much as it’s a love letter to storytelling. And it’s a story that keeps getting better the more chapters Whitters writes.

RAISED Tracklist:

  1. Ad Astra Per Alas Porci (Jordan Lehning, Pedro Palomino)
  2. Raised (Hailey Whitters, Nicolle Galyon, Forest Glen Whitehead)

Filmore Returns with Another New Song “Girl Back”

Filmore’s new track, “Girl Back” is out now, March 18th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

“Girl Back” is the third release in three weeks for Filmore, following “Leave Me A Memory” and “Johnny Got A Girl.” The song separates from the previous two with its upbeat R&B pop style that takes on a different vibe from the others.

“Girl Back” is about all the memories from your hometown that are attached to places that may not even be there anymore. Even more specifically, they’re with the person you’re no longer with. Everything about that town could change but the one thing that still wouldn’t, is all the memories you two shared in it. Realizing those memories don’t mean anything without the girl, Filmore offers a deal to his hometown, saying it can keep all their memories, just give him the girl back.

“That bar can keep our first kiss // That tree can keep our rope swing // The wall we carved our names in, Summer 2013 // That truck can keep our good years // Those memories they can stay right there // Tell this small town to keep everything we had // Just give me the girl back”

“Girl Back” was written by Filmore, Sam Bergeson, Cale Dodds, and Dan Pellarin; and produced by Zach Abend and Sam Bergeson.

Elle King Drops Fiery New Song “Out Yonder”

Elle King’s new song “Out Yonder,” is out now, March 18th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below to find out more.

Although considered a pop/rock artist, Elle King, best known for her 2014 number one hit, “Ex’s and Oh’s,” has always had a passion for country music. She grew up listening to a variety of singers including Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, which inspired her to learn how to play the banjo. In 2016, she got her first taste of mainstream country radio when she featured on Dierks Bentley’s GRAMMY-nominated song, “Different for Girls.” Additionally, in 2019, she was a part of the massive collaboration cover of Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell in Love” alongside Maren Morris, Ashley McBryde, Tenille Townes, Caylee Hammack, and Miranda Lambert. Both collaborations won awards for Music Event of the Year at the CMAs and ACMs, respectively. Finally, she wrote and featured on the single “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” with Lambert. The song has achieved great success across all-genre charts and is currently sitting in the Top 5 on country radio.

Out today, “Out Yonder” is a banjo and electric guitar-driven southern rock anthem about how gossip spreads like wildfire in a small town. King expresses how she doesn’t care or want to know about the drama going around town because there are always two sides of the story. Written by Ella Langley, Matt McKinney, and Bobby Hamrick, the song is an upbeat tune, paired with catchy lyrics, making this a fun track to sing-along and rock out to.

“Gotta rip it right up at the roots // You can keep your mouth runnin’ // Hell Jesus might love ya’ // But that don’t mean I do // So take your front page, two-faced, petty ass drama // Leave it out, leave it out, leave it out yonder”

King is currently wrapping up her Drunk and I Don’t Wanna Go Home Tour on the west coast and just recently performed at Nashville’s own Ryman Auditorium. She will support Chris Stapleton on his All-American Road Show Tour starting in Canada this April. The tour will stop in the NYC area on August 25 at Northwell Health’s Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh. For tickets, head to her website.

Tenille Townes Joins Nate Smith on “I Don’t Wanna Go To Heaven”

Nate Smith collaborates with Tenille Townes on new song, “I Don’t Wanna Go To Heaven,” out now, March 18th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track here.

Nate Smith’s musical journey has had its twists and turns, but in 2018, after performing at a few festival shows, the California-native made his way to Nashville to sign a record deal with SONY. Since then, he has released several singles such as “Wildfire,” “Under My Skin,” “Raised Up,” and of course, “I Don’t Wanna Go To Heaven.”

If you haven’t heard the song yet, it’s similar to Kane Brown’s “Heaven,” as the subject in the song compares simply lying next to the one he loves to making it to the promised land. This already beautiful ballad gets prettier when Canadian singer-songwriter, Tenille Townes jumps in to add backing vocals to the chorus and provide a female perspective in the second verse. This is the third version of the song that Smith has released; earlier this year he put out one with a church choir.

“I don’t wanna go to heaven, when heaven’s right here lying next to me // I count every kiss and every blessing, it’s the only proof I’ll ever need”

Tiffany Woys: ‘All About Love’ – EP Review

Tiffany Woys releases her new EP, All About Love, out now, March 18th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new music below and check out our full review.

Tiffany Woys is a powerhouse singer in country music. She has the unique ability to make every song she sings feel like it came directly from her soul. On her newest EP, All About Love, Woys enlists the songwriting prowess of some of Nashville’s top songwriters to create an incredible new project.

In a recent press release, Woys shares “Love is a universal language. It’s a feeling that everyone experiences along with heartbreak. It’s all I’ve really wanted to convey with listeners. I want people to know we are all more related than you think.’ Later she adds, “That’s through love. So now I am releasing six songs that I hope relate to you too. That through love and music you feel a little less alone. This EP is All About Love and I think we can all agree we need more of it!”

The EP kicks off with the Woys’ current single, “About Love.” The track is the perfect introduction to the project. The pop-country tune feels wistful and hopeful, two things we need more of in our everyday lives. Similarly, on “Own This Town,” Woys sings about love and nostalgia. The song manages to deliver that hope and confidence yet again.

Next up is “Wear It Out,” written by Tammi Kidd Hutton, Nathan Spicer, and Sarah Allison Turner. On this song, Woys’ pours her heart out about a song that reminds you of your love. With lyrics like, “So I wear it out til it don’t // Spin around anymore // I turn it up loud enough that I’m yours // right back in your arms baby,” the song inspires so much emotion.

On “I Don’t Want You Back,” Woys taps into the difficult time of love. Each lyric of the song is vulnerable and relatable. The song expresses how it feels to watch someone you once loved move on and have to act like you are okay with it. One of our favorite songs on the record, Woys’ proves she is a powerhouse vocalist for any of the naysayers.

Similarly, on “I’ll Meet You There,” the songstress allows fans into the vulnerability of how love can sometimes be scary. Despite the melancholy nature of the song, there is still hope weaved into each and every lyric.

“Sometimes loves gonna take // More than it’s gonna give you back // You either bend or you break // It’s always been simple as that // Yeah it’s messy and it’s real // Love ain’t built on how we feel // No the road to forever ain’t always fair // but I’ll meet you there”

The record ends with an impressive cover of LeAnn Rimes’ song “Probably Wouldn’t Be This Way.” The ballad is the perfect way to end an EP that is centered around all things “love.” All About Love is one of our favorite releases by Woys so far.

Dylan Schneider: ‘College Town’- EP Review

Dylan Schneider’s brand new EP, College Town, is out now, March 18th on all streaming platforms. Check out our full review and listen to the brand new music below.

Broken Bow Records recording artist, Dylan Schneider continues to crank out new music. His newest EP, College Town is officially out now, featuring five new songs that are sure to impress any country music lover.

The record kicks off with the title track and one of the four songs written by Schneider. “College Town” creates a nostalgic picture throughout the tune. The 22-year-old shares experiences that many college-aged people go through, as we all navigate life and changes. Similarly, on “Right Girl,” penned by Morgan Wallen, Nate Kenyon, and Simon Gugala, Schneider digs into the feelings of nostalgia once again. On the only outside cut, he brings us back to missing that someone.

“Wishing you were here to take a ride girl // Rolling round riding shotgun // Leaning back in the front seat // Top-down with your hands up // Every time I take this Jeep for a drive, girl // It makes me wish you were sitting to the right, girl”

On “Girls Country,” Schneider explores a rowdy side of his talent. The song is fun, anthemic, and perfect for live performances. Reminiscent of old-school Florida Georgia Line and Jason Aldean, Schneider brings his own twist to a true-blue country anthem.

The singer-songwriter switches gears, and showcases his incredible vocal ability and songwriting talent on the third and fourth tracks off the EP. “21 And Over,” arguably our favorite song on the project, is a bittersweet ballad that reminds us all of our first loves, fading friendships, and growing up and apart. With lyrics like,  “Young love hates to admit it // Two sixteen-year-old kids get // So wrapped up in the moment,” it is hard not to fall in love with the track.

Finally, his debut label release, “Lost in A Small Town,” taps into that nostalgic feeling about missing that person that you used to run around your small town with. Even in the place where you grew up and that you know like the back of your hand, you feel lost because the one that you’re supposed to be there with isn’t there anymore.

The truth is College Town is bottled-up nostalgia. The EP gives fans an impressive taste of Schneider’s undeniable talent while taking us on an emotional journey through the incredible five tracks.
