Just about a year ago, Maddie & Tae released their long-awaited sophomore record The Way It Feels. The record showcased the duo in the best light, proving that they are truly ready for greatness. Now, months later the singer-songwriters return with their first release of 2021, a brand new single titled “Woman You Got.”

Teasing the song on social media, the ladies dedicated “Woman You Got” to “all [the] self-aware queens out there.” Just that mere sentiment alone was enough to get us excited for its release. The new song is a sassy, mid-tempo jam all about owning who you are. Maddie and Tae share their flaws in such a way that feels both confident and self-assured. The song is an inspiring love song that feels deliciously Maddie & Tae.

Although the past year was not what the duo hoped it would be in regards to touring and celebrating new music, 2021 is looking promising for the singers. With a dedicated fanbase behind them, a firm foundation holding them up, and incredible talent, this is only just the (new) beginning for Maddie & Tae!

Written by Michelson with Patrick Mencel and Justin Morgan, “Tip Jar” is a song about using a night out with some live music to get over a break-up. After his girlfriend ends it over a phone call, he tells her to keep his records, because he doesn’t want to listen to any music that’s going to remind him of her anyway. Instead, he heads to the bar and keeps throwing 20’s in the band’s tip jar so they’ll keep playing songs all night long and help him create new memories to in an effort to forget about her.

This song is all about losing yourself in a night out, having a good time singing and dancing to music, and worrying about everything else later on. In a recent press release, Michelson shares that “Tip Jar” is one of the most ‘me songs’ he has ever released. He adds that he feels we need fun new music now more than ever this year, and that’s exactly what “Tip Jar” is. 

“I’ll toss a 20 in the tip jar // I gotta keep ‘em playing all night long // Tell all my buddies I won’t miss her // If I just keep ‘em playing all our songs // Ain’t reckless behavior, I gotta replace the // Memories we made here in this bar // And if the band can fix my broken heart // I’ll toss a 20 in the tip jar”

Underwood is undeniably the reigning “queen of country music”, a title well-earned after having tremendous success in the industry. Her achievements include 27 number-one hits, seven platinum/multi-platinum records, and over 100 major awards (seven of which are GRAMMYs). Raised Catholic in the small town of Checotah, Oklahoma, her faith has always been a huge part of her life and career.

Underwood’s musical catalog contains crossover hits such as “Jesus Take the Wheel,” “Something in the Water,” and many others, along with her latest Christmas album, My Gift, which was more faith than commercial-based. With My Savior, the songstress continues to show her flexibility in music.

“Hymns and gospel music shaped me as an artist,” she explained in a recent press release. “They are the foundation of my career. This music isn’t about being on stage in front of a crowd; it’s about singing for the love of God.”

Underwood selected songs that she grew up listening to in church and at home, such as Fanny Crosby’s “Blessed Assurance” and Will Thompson’s “Softly and Tenderly.” NEEDTOBREATHE’s Bear Rinehart provides backing vocals in her cover of Robert Lowry’s “Nothing but the Blood of Jesus,” and 12-time GRAMMY award-winning gospel artist, CeCe Winans is featured on “Great is Thy Faithfulness.”

“CeCe is legendary, and I’ve always admired her,” she admits. “It’s similar to the way I feel about Dolly Parton. I don’t remember the first time I heard her; I just feel like I’ve always known her.”

Although she decided to go in a different direction with the genre of this album, she didn’t forget to incorporate her Nashville roots. Several of the songs, especially “Victory in Jesus” and “Old Rugged Cross,” contain a heavy amount of banjo and steel guitar, giving it a traditional sound that is not prevalent in modern country.

Underwood’s powerhouse vocals are displayed in tracks such as “Because He Lives” and “How Great Art Thou.” The album closes with the widely covered anthem, “Amazing Grace,” first written by John Newton.

Underwood’s talent, versatility, and immense stardom has led to her charting on country, pop, holiday, and Christian radio. In what was a difficult 12 months for most, her goal was to spread some positivity in time for Easter through the grace of God.

“It just feels so good to get to sing these songs, and I feel so fortunate to have spent the past year with these beautiful, inspirational messages,” she said. “I hope people will hear the heart that’s in this album.”

County music superstar Miranda Lambert recently revealed that she has joined forces with fellow musicians, Jack Ingram and Jon Randall on a brand new record entitled THE MARFA TAPES, slated to come out on May 7th. The trio already released two songs off the intimate record including “In His Arms” and a new, raw version of Lambert’s award-winning track “Tin Man.” The third release, out today, is titled “Am I Right or Amarillo.”

Unlike the previous releases, “Am I Right or Amarillo” is a true back and forth between Lambert and Ingram. The record begins with insane harmonies between the two, showcasing their undeniable talent and connection to each other. From there on, Randall sings the verses showcasing his individual talent, but the track soars with the harmonies. The song is heartbreakingly beautiful, and it’s clear that love is at the forefront of this upcoming project.

With each new release, THE MARFA TAPES is proving to be a project for the ages! The purity, intimacy, talent, and overall creativity that went into this project is evident with every note strummed, lyric crafted, and vocal sang. “Am I Right or Amarillo” is another work of art in what is sure to be a masterpiece record in its totality.

The new song shows off the singer’s vulnerable and sensual side. It is hard not to imagine yourself in the song, as you listen to the mesmerizing lyrics. Jannakos’ vocals are even more impressive. He manages to feel current, laid-back, and enticing all in one three-minute tune. “Wine Country” is all about romance, and the track is the ultimate advocate for country love songs.

Brett Young Reveals Baby #2’s Gender on The Kelly Clarkson Show

And then there were four! Brett Young visited The Kelly Clarkson Show to reveal the gender of his second child, due this summer.

Back in January Young revealed to fans on social media that he and wife, Taylor Mills Young are expecting baby number two! Due this summer, baby-to-be will join big sister, Presley, making the family a soon-to-be family of four!

Today the country crooner revealed the gender of the baby on The Kelly Clarkson Show. Brett and Taylor are officially having a baby GIRL!

The news comes on the heels of Young’s current radio single, “Lady,” sitting at number two and fighting its way to the number one spot on the country charts, and we predict it’s coming soon! Presley and Taylor are the inspirations for the song, and we are sure that this new baby will inspire Young just as much!

Congrats to Brett, Taylor, Presley, and their newest addition!

Kylie Morgan’s “Shoulda” is a song that I have had on repeat since its release a few weeks ago. The catchy, upbeat, and edgy track is nearly impossible to listen to without wanting to jump up, dance around, and scream sing along to every word.

Morgan creatively turns a break-up into a power anthem, looking back on all of the things you should’ve, could’ve, would’ve done differently, but doing exactly what you wanted anyway.

Pick: “Knowing You” – Kenny Chesney

Admittedly, I never got Kenny Chesney. Maybe it’s because I’m from the city or because of my age, but I never really seemed to get the hype. I heard Luke Laird sing one of his Kenny cuts “American Kids” days before lockdown, and suddenly, I felt my perspective change. About a month later, I read an article about “Knowing You”, and it moved me enough that I felt compelled to listen. Upon first listen, I was crushed in the best way. It wasn’t overly specific. It’s not earth-shattering – if anything, it was how simple and frank it was that made me love it. Something about the melody and the phrasing of the chorus drew me in.

“But God, we were so alive // I was a kid on a carnival ride”

Spring usually makes me reflect, but this last year of immense loss and change keeps me coming back to this song. I think about what it means for me, and also how everyone in the world can relate to its sentiment. I can’t remember a time I was this excited about a mainstream radio single. Safe to say I get Kenny now.

Pick: “Want It Again” – Thomas Rhett
Songwriters: Jon Henderson, Josh Miller, Josh Thompson, Lynn Hutton, Matt Dragstrem, Thomas Rhett

I’ve been listening to this song non-stop since it came out! I love anything Thomas Rhett drops, but it was nice to hear a vulnerable, stripped-down song from him. Sometimes I feel like these poppy-productions take away from the lyrics of his songs, but with “Want It Again,” you can feel the raw emotion in his voice.

I also like how this sad song has a happy ending to it – you can put it on if you want to cry, or you can put it on if you are feeling extra grateful for the person you love. I’m very excited for part one of his album and I hope to hear a lot more songs like this one!

“And oh, I hope one day you’ll find // Your way back into my arms // So girl, I’ll put this heart of mine // Somewhere good and safe, in case you want it again someday”

Pick: “How Far Can It Go?” – Hailey Whitters ft. Trisha Yearwood
Songwriters: Hailey Whitters, Hillary Lindsey, Nicolle Galyon

When I first heard this song and even knew Trisha Yearwood was featured on it,  it immediately reminded me of the song “She’s In Love With The Boy.” The upbeat tune is about young love and as the song title says, seeing how far it’ll go.

“How far can it go? // How long will it last? // She’s got her eyes on forever, he’s got his foot on the gas // Can’t stop two hearts from fallin’ down like dominoes // Heads are shakin’, preacher prayin’, mama sayin’ // Hеy, how far can it go?”

Whitters has such a unique voice so pairing that with a traditional, timeless voice like Yearwood’s makes this catchy tune a hit in my book. This is the second song Whitters has out with some big names attached. She also has a song “Fillin’ My Cup” with Little Big Town out now. I love listening to new talent in the country music world and can’t wait to see what’s next for this up-and-coming star.

Pick: “I Remember Everything” – Brandi Carlile
Songwriters: John Prine, Pat McLaughin

I first heard Brandi Carlile on the soundtrack of the Nicholas Sparks film Safe Haven and was immediately transfixed. Vocally, she is timeless yet vintage; one of those artists that creates an intricate atmosphere of cigars, whiskey, and sadness, while, at the same time, incorporating a real sense of universality and togetherness. An incredibly strong gift.

John Prine’s “I Remember Everything” through Carlile’s voice brings a new life to the words of the late country legend. Presented on the Grammy stage, the song connects the past to the present; inner turmoil to complete devotion.

The weight of this tribute song, with more to come through an album of the best from Prine, has not withered with time. And, with Carlile’s lasting effect as if hearing her for the first time over classic country-folk productions, this upcoming project is on the top of the anticipation list.

Pick: “Cross Country” – Breland ft. Mickey Guyton
Songwriters: Daniel Breland, Mickey Guyton, Sam Sumser, Sean Small, Will Gittens

I was an immediate fan of BRELAND’s original version of this song. While autobiographical of his own journey through the music industry, it is also a very relatable story of struggling to find your own purpose and place in this world. I think songs can have different meanings to different people, dependent on the different stages of life that they are going through. I related to this song strongly in the sense that he was searching his whole life to make it possible for him to do what he wanted to do.

In the remix, Guyton is able to add her own story into the song, showing that this personal struggle to get to where they are now, was something they had in common, and something that many others can relate to as well.

Both BRELAND and Guyton have been inspirational and boundary-breaking throughout their entire careers and especially in the last year. This song perfectly expresses the powerful impact they each have on the music industry and specifically on Nashville. It is an incredible blend of two stories, of two artists, who are breaking boundaries for people of color in country music.

Pick: “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” – Miranda Lambert & Elle King

With March holding the major icon of International Women’s Day in a year that’s proven to have set so many women back in terms of work and play, I chose “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” to highlight the power of two glass-breakers in the country music scene.
This song is an anthem for every woman who has been told too many times, explicit or not, to play a certain role. The drive of the beat fills me with anticipation of all that I can do. These are the lyrics I want to hear every time I need a reminder that I can take any risk I want, and my strength and will are there to keep me afloat; and not just afloat, but soaring. Keep it up, gals.
“We don’t gotta wait until the weekend // There’s always time for jumping off the deep end // So don’t you wait up tonight // Don’t worry, I’ll be fine”

 

Pick: “Another” – Adam Doleac
Songwriters: Adam Doleac, Kyle Jacobs, Trannie Anderson

This song might be six months old, but it has personally been on repeat the past few weeks. Adam Doleac’s voice and his laid-back production style make all his songs some of my favorites, and this track is no exception. With simple but poignant imagery, and a chorus just as catchy as it is sweet, ‘Another’ is bound to resonate with any hopeless-romantic-country-music-lover.

Pick: “Hey Y’all” – Cole Swindell
Songwriters: Brandon Kinney, Cole Swindell, Michael Carter

This month, I chose Cole Swindell’s “Hey Y’all” from his debut album. Released over seven years ago, the song remains one of my favorites to this day. “Hey Y’all” has also been on repeat for me even more so because I’m really missing Swindell’s concerts and this song puts me right back there. I can picture everyone waving their hands from side to side and singing the chorus back to the talented entertainer. Hopefully, we will all be enjoying a show soon!

Pick: “Please Come to Boston” – William Michael Morgan

My pick for March is William Michael Morgan’s cover of the Dave Loggins song, “Please Come to Boston.” The song is such a classic, and Morgan’s rich traditional voice is perfect for it. The song has such a bittersweet feeling, and it’s heartbreaking in all of the best ways. The female background vocals lend so much to the track, and I’ve had it on repeat since its release a few weeks ago.

Pick: “4 Goodyears” – Brett Sheroky
Songwriters: Andrew Peebles, Brett Sheroky, Daniel Wilson

Though a lot of great songs came out this month, it’s Brett Sheroky’s newest release, “4 Goodyears” that I keep coming back to. Sheroky is one of those artists that create a story and put it to song. “4 Goodyears” is another exemplary example of that.

Lyrically, the song is a masterpiece, and the nostalgia that the song embodies is almost palpable. I always respect songwriters for sharing their truth with their fanbase. Vulnerability and story-telling always outweigh radio-friendly and catchy tunes for me. With that being said, this song can appeal to both kinds of country lovers.

Sheroky is a one-of-a-kind talent, and I encourage everyone to go listen to “4 Goodyears” ASAP.

Morgan Wallen’s ‘Dangerous: The Double Album’ Spends 10th Week At #1

Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album tops charts for the 10th consecutive week, making the project one of only three albums ever to do so.

For ten consecutive weeks, Morgan Wallen’s newest record Dangerous: The Double Album has sat firmly in the #1 spot since its debut on the Billboard Top 200 Chart. Despite the chaos surrounding the budding superstar, the album is shattering records.

Dangerous: The Double Album is the first record since Whitney Houston’s Whitney, in 1987, to spend its initial 10 weeks at number one. Joining Houston’s album along with Stevie Wonder’s 1976 album, Songs In The Key Of Life,  Wallen’s sophomore project becomes only the third album of all-time that has reached this accolade. Even more, the album is currently on track to overtake Drake’s record-breaking album, Views, which spent 13 nonconsecutive weeks in the lead in 2016.

If that’s not impressive enough, Wallen’s record is the first-ever country album to spend more than six weeks topping the charts. It’s also only the fourth album across genres to spend at least nine weeks atop the charts.

Despite how some may feel about Wallen and his newest record, it’s fair to say that Dangerous: The Double Album is a certified masterpiece. Only time will tell what this news continues to mean for Wallen and his place in country music.

What better way to celebrate Easter Sunday than with a gospel concert live from the Mother Church of Country music? Carrie Underwood is doing just that, announcing a unique way to experience her new album, My Savior with a global livestream on Sunday, April 4th.

My Savior, the companion project to last year’s Christmas album, My Gift, features covers of traditional hymns with special guests including gospel legend, CeCe Winans, NEEDTOBREATHE frontman, Bear Rinehart, and legendary musicians Buddy Greene and McAnally. All four will join Underwood during the broadcast from the iconic Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville.

The event is free to stream, but donations collected during the viewing will go to Save the Children, a leading global humanitarian organization working to improve education, economic, and healthcare opportunities for children around the world.

My Savior is co-arranged and produced by award-winning producer, David Garcia and Underwood herself, a partnership that has continued since Underwood’s 2018 studio album, Cry Pretty. “This is an album I have always wanted to record,” says Underwood. “It means so much to be able to bring this event to people in their homes on a day that holds so much meaning for us spiritually.”

My Savior is available everywhere this Friday, March 26th. “My Savior: Live from the Ryman” will stream on Underwood’s official Facebook page at 11am CT/12PM ET on Sunday, April 4th and remain exclusively on the platform for 48 hours. Fans can RSVP via Facebook here.

Much like St. Jude and the way they do their best to make patients and their families feel at home, Dickerson believes that home isn’t a specific point on the map, but is made with the people you are surrounded by. “Wherever the wind blows, wherever this life goes,” Dickerson sings on the chorus in “Home Sweet”, the second single off of his sophomore album, Southern Symphony.

On a recent virtual meet and greet, Dickerson shared laughs and conversation with St. Jude patient, Ian, and his Mom, Anna about fun, games, sports, and of course Ian’s go-to food; mac and cheese. The simplicity and the kindness of the meeting is one that showcases Dickerson’s core personality in the best light.

For someone like Ian, who has spent many months living at St Jude, his home away from home, the message of “Home Sweet” is evident. St Jude makes their hospital feel like an inviting and fun place to live for a while, rather than feel like a hospital. Even Dickerson admitted that his past experiences playing music and hanging with the kids at the research hospital were a joyful experience.
