Hannah Ellis CMT Next Women of Country

This past Friday, the CMT Next Women Of Country Tour rolled around to New York City to play one of their 11-dates here at the Gramercy Theatre in lower Manhattan. Luckily for us New Yorkers, we got to experience this sold-out show with three extremely talented women Hannah Ellis, Clare Dunn, and Cassadee Pope.

Kicking off the night Hannah Ellis opened up the show with just her and her guitarist going straight into her upbeat debut single, “ILY So What,” getting everyone pumped up for the night ahead. Right off the bat, the crowd was already singing along, leaving Ellis mind blown she mentioned, “Someone should tell you, I can see you, and I am feeling it! Here for it! My name is Hannah Ellis and I am so excited to be here in New York hanging out with you guys on the CMT Next Women Of Country Tour!… This next one is my current single that I just put out about two weeks ago, it’s called “Your Woman.”

In between each song, the singer-songwriter took the time to chat with the crowd about what was coming up next. Before going into her next song she said, “So I’m a full-time singer-songwriter out in Nashville and the fact that someone pays me dollars every day to go in a room and talk about my emotions is kinda incredible. I’m not going to lie, but this next song is one that I wrote with two people that I love very much.” Slowing it down for a song, she sang “Never In Love,” before bringing it back up to cover a song we all know and love, “No Diggity” by Blackstreet. Showcasing her talent she drifted away from country to show off her R&B side, getting the crowd fired up singing and dancing along to her rendition.

As her set was coming to an end she had one more song left, she began by getting personal saying, “Sometimes it’s hard for me to know exactly what to say about this next song because as a songwriter you write so many songs and you never know what is going to happen with them, if your going to be the only person to ever hear them or if they go out there and create their own life and I released this song last July. It’s just a song about how much I love where I come from and the people that raised me but I also love where I ended up and I think a lot of New Yorkers get that…This song has been really amazing to watch it create its own life…and it’s just really special for me.” Closing out her set with her hit single, “Home and A Hometown.” Ellis had the entire crowd singing back the words, getting everyone ready for what was to come next.

Next up was Clare Dunn, kicking off her set with her song “Ferrari” the country rocker switched it up a bit from Ellis’ set playing guitar alongside a full band. From the very start, she was showcasing her insane guitar skills shredding it like a true rockstar. Before going any further into the night, Dunn put her guitar down and took the time to speak with the crowd making the night extra special by saying, “New York! We’re going to do something very special here tonight. We are going to film a live music video so we hope you’re okay with that. So be sure and cheer really loud for it, this is my brand new single that just came out called “My Love” and you’re going to be in the video!” The crowd was ready, dancing along to the tune while cheering as she gave her all for the music video. After the shot was done, everyone was fired up and ready for the rest of the night ahead.

As the night went on Dunn picked her guitar back up to continue her set, playing a mix of singles as well as covers, hitting all her bases she sang her singles, “Cowboy Side of You,” and “More,” as well as her song “Go To It.” That wasn’t all, she did a variety of covers starting with “Her Strut” by Bob Seger, mentioning how she had to perform this song because she had the honor and privilege of a lifetime to tour with him. Touching base with the audience of all ages, she then covered a song everyone knows “Rolling In The Deep” by Adele. The entire crowd erupted in cheers, singing back the lyrics to the popular song.

With Dunn’s set coming to an end, she couldn’t leave the stage without singing her most popular song yet mentioning to the crowd, “I’d like to talk to you a little bit about this next song and just say thank you for changing my life, you guys set a bunch of records with this song…this was just a personal little love song for me and I never dreamed that it would be the success that it was so thank you…Thank you for all the love that you have shown me so passionately on this song if you know it sing along it’s called “Tuxedo.” Belting out the lyrics, the crowd sang back every word making it a moment to never forget. Before ending her set she had one more cover, closing out with no other than “Rock and Roll” by Led Zeppelin once again showing off her master guitar skills.

Last up was the headliner herself, Cassadee Pope kicking off her set performing her past uptempo single “Take You Home.” Not stopping there she continued playing her songs “I Wish I Could Break Your Heart,” and “How I Feel Right Now,” before taking a moment to chat with the crowd saying, “I love New York City so much, this is one of my favorite places to visit in general but oh my gosh to play a show here forget about it! So my name’s Cassadee Pope and this is the CMT Next Women Of Country Tour!… This has been such an amazing tour because not only do I get to go out on tour with my friends but I’m sharing these new stories that I just released on my new album Stages…I would love to play you this song it’s my single, Hannah Ellis co-wrote it, its called “If My Heart Had A Heart.” Singing her emotional ballad the crowd sang along softly.

Pope kept the crowd on their toes waiting to hear what song was up next, covering the one and only Third Eye Blind singing their hit single “Never Let You Go.” The crowd erupted in cheers shouting out the lyrics as the singer-songwriter sang her rendition of the tune. After the rap part of the song, she was so amazed by the crowd she stopped midway saying, “Oh my gosh you guys know the most lyrics than any tour date on this tour so far. I couldn’t help myself, I referenced Third Eye Blind in another song of mine and I just had to add a little bit of Third Eye Blind during my set. So we got two chorus’s left, your already singing along so just continue to do that!” Finishing out the song strong, everyone was screaming out the lyrics, ending the jam on the right note.

Justin Aharoni (@jaharoni) for NYCountry Swag

Throughout her set she performed her songs “11,” “I’ve Been Good,” “Distracted,” “Gavi,” “Champagne,” and her duet with Chris Young “Think Of You.” Pope put her beautiful vocals on full display, showcasing her raw talent to the crowd while they sang along to every song. She couldn’t end her set without bringing  Hannah and Clare back to the stage to perform one last time. Mentioning to the crowd, “I mean after all this is the Next Women Of Country Tour so you didn’t think we’re not going to sing together and I wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to sing with you guys. So this was actually my finale song on The Voice! Thank you by the way for anybody who voted for me you changed my life. One of my biggest influences is Faith Hill so I figured we would sing this together, this one is called “Cry.” Combining their talents they brought the song to life as their voices intertwined flawlessly.

As the night was coming to an end Pope mentioned how excited she was to be back in New York City performing for a sold-out crowd, thanking everyone once again for coming out before performing her single “One More Red Light.” Before leaving the stage for good she had two more songs left to perform as part of her encore. Taking it back to the old days she said, “Okay I’ll play a few more, I know I mentioned this earlier but I used to be in a band called Hey Monday and NYC was a second home to me because of that band so I couldn’t come here and headline a show in NYC and not play a Hey Monday song so we are going to take it back to 2008, here we go!” The entire crowd erupted in screams while everyone rushed the stage to get as close as possible. Pope transported the 2019 crowd back to 2008 as she performed Hey Monday’s popular song “Homecoming.” Performing the ultimate jamming out song everyone sang back the words as if no time had passed. Ending the night on a high note she continued the hype by performing her debut single “Wasting All These Tears” from her first album Frame By Frame.

NYCS Swag Spotlight Terra Bella

Terra Bella

Joe and Martina Costa have been playing music together since the days of MySpace, where Martina first found Joe, hoping for some free guitar lessons.  They both grew up in the central valley of California and tell us in our recent interview how music had always been important to them growing up. Martina explains that she never dreamed she would grow up to be a singer living in Nashville, she was always interested in and studied agriculture. She started singing karaoke and had such fun that she caught the performing bug and that is when she found Joe on MySpace.

Joe’s dad grew up playing guitar and singing, introducing him to music from an early age. Initially, he played the drums for all different bands in high school including a rock band and a blues band. It was only when he started writing music did he decide he didn’t want the other performers in the band to sing his songs, he wanted to sing them.

While Joe credits the ’60s and ’70s rock bands like The Eagles, Don McLean, and Creedence Clearwater Revival as his influences growing up, Martina’s very first memory was hearing Waylon Jenning’s voice on vinyl and then recalls listening to Janis Joplin, Patsy Cline, and The Judds. As Joe got older he got more into the ’90s country stars like Garth Brooks, George Strait and even into rock bands like Green Day and Blink 182. They both explain how they feel all of their influences are heard in their music today.

Martina tells us the story of how they met and eventually became not only a duo but a couple as well. “It was ten years ago, we were still living in California and we met on myspace,” she explains. “I was trying to hit him up for free guitar lessons, next thing you know we were hanging out and started performing together and kind of fell in love while singing together. The music came first and the chemistry was already there, everyone else saw it way before we did.”  Whether it was playing around campfires, family functions or BBQs they would always end up singing together and people thought they were together for years when in reality it had only been a few months.

Shortly after getting married, the duo Terra Bella made the big move to Nashville. We discussed what was missing in the California music scene; “We were basically a west coast band and we just felt like we had done everything we could living there, we were a very busy touring band but we didn’t have a great record, we were writing decent songs but felt like there was something else out there that I could learn from,” Joe explains. After Terra Bella opened for Lee Brice, they had a chance encounter with his production manager who convinced them to go visit Nashville. “After the first day of hanging out in Nashville, we were like ‘we have to move here, there is just something in the air that feels right,’ Martina tells us.  “It’s a long drive, we are a long way from family but there was just something about it, it has taken the career places we never thought it could go.”

They are proud of their California roots and proud that artists like Jon Pardi, Brett Young, Devin Dawson, and Cam are also representing their state in country music. Looking ahead to their next EP, they explain that the one word they would use is to describe the new songs is authentic. “We both come from farming and ranching families, my family is out in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by cattle ranches. We strive really hard to represent California in the best way possible and where our roots are firmly planted,” they tell us.

Terra Bella do write songs together, one of the tracks on the EP they co-wrote with two other friends, Joe, however, is a writer on each track. “The rest of the songs I co-wrote with various friends, we feature a lot of female co-writers on this EP which makes me so proud. I love that combination, both perspectives, since we have female and male singers, it rounds it out really cool,” Joe tells us. “There are so many talented female writers and singers in Nashville and we want to do everything that we can to promote them and give us the best music we can have.”

Looking ahead to this summer Terra Bella is so excited to finally be playing a show in New York City at Rockwood Music Hall. They say “We have driven through, we have been to a Yankees game, we’ve stood in Times Square but we have never played and we are over the moon about it because you guys love country music. Just talking about it I’m getting the nervous butterflies.”

Russell Dickerson Every Little Thing

Photo Courtesy of Russell Dickerson Facebook

Coming off his recent ACM nomination for Song of the Year for “Yours”, Tennessee native, Russell Dickerson is giving us all a feel-good vibe in the video for his newest song “Every Little Thing.” The third single from his debut album is a crowd favorite at his shows and was inspired by his love for his wife Kailey.

In the accompanying video, Dickerson is rehearsing for his show, and with one kiss from his wife, he is performing on stage to a packed house of fans singing along to every word. The video is set in Chinatown and the singer-songwriter is having some light-hearted fun in a convenience store with his wife singing, “Cause I love every little, every little, every little thing about her love/Just a little, just little, just a little ain’t enough/ Gotta get a, gotta get a, get a little more of all she does/Cause I love every little, every little, every little thing about her love.”

No matter where or what Dickerson is doing, as long as he is with the woman he loves – all is okay. He describes the amazing qualities his wife has in “Every Little Thing” with lyrics: “She’s easy like Sunday morning and wild like Saturday night/she’s 24-carat goodness, an angel’s all I see.” The music video of the catchy song highlights the incredible energy Dickerson brings to his set on tour and after watching it, who would not want to be there?

Dickerson has a jam-packed summer ahead joining Dustin Lynch and Thomas Rhett on the 2019 Very Hot Summer Tour. The star-studded lineup will head to Madison Square Garden on September 20th. By the looks of it, Dickerson has every little thing to look forward to this year!

Tenille Townes Channels Classic Country Songs on “I Kept The Roses”

Tenille Townes I Kept The Roses

Canadian-born and talented newcomer Tenille Townes released “I Kept the Roses” this week and continues to showcase her incredibly heart wrenching and empathetic songwriting ability. “I Kept the Roses”, written by Townes with Chris Gelbuda and Dustin Christensen has a vintage feel to it, telling the story of a relationship gone wrong, and the promising strength to find your way through losing the one you love.

“I Kept the Roses” exhibits a classic, subtle vibe conveying the message that no matter what we go through in life, and no matter how it shapes us, we can still find a way to be happy and be at peace with where we are. Townes optimistically sings in the chorus, “I kept the roses, right by my bed, and they sure make me lonely, but I’m smilin’ instead, cause you weren’t the one babe, but you were the closest, I let the rest of us go, but I kept the roses.”

Post break up lyrics include getting rid of many of the material things, but Townes explains the roses signify the meaning behind the breakup. She continues with lyrics, “I guess they remind me of how love can feel, sometimes it don’t work, doesn’t mean it ain’t real, we had something different, we had something great, oh but some things they just wilt away.”

In her own traditional optimistic take on a broken relationship, “I Kept the Roses” follows former releases “White Horse” and the bold “Somebody’s Daughter.” Townes has grown her fan base from Canada all the way down to the United States and beyond. Nashville’s newest voice has everyone anticipating her debut album that is set to be released in 2019. Townes is currently on the Burning Man Tour with Dierks Bentley and will be joining Miranda Lambert’s Roadside Bars and Pink Guitars Tour later this year.

Granger Smith Releases Heartwarming “Heaven Bound Balloons”

Heaven Bound Balloon Granger Smith

For anyone who has ever lost a loved one, friend, or animal, Granger Smith’s new song “Heaven Bound Balloons” is for you. The track, penned by Smith with Andy Albert and Jordan Schmidt highlights the innocence of children and the simple ways we can send a message to those in heaven, letting them know how much they are missed.

“Heaven Bound Balloons” starts out with Smith seeing his children out in his backyard with magic markers and balloons. The singer-songwriter notices that one is let go into the sky, he then goes outside to see what they are up to. The children tell their dad that they are sending notes to their grandpa, Smith asks to join them.

“We wrote we miss you and we love you / Told him things were great down here / We spelled it out and sent it up / And we watched it disappear / Sometimes I guess you’ve got to see it to believe it / Cause right then I knew those blue sky prayers were getting through / When we let go of those heaven bound balloons.”

The family ends up making a balloon for everyone they wished were here, including their dog Rio.
Although the song is about losing those you love, it has a powerful, uplifting message. While we certainly miss talking to our loved ones in person, there are still ways we can communicate with them, tell them we miss them every single day and show them we are doing okay down on earth.

We aren’t used to hearing too many personal songs from Smith as most of them are party tunes especially when his alter ego Earl Dibbles Jr. makes an appearance.  This is the singer’s second new song of 2019, last month he released “Holler”. He is planning on releasing a new song each month. We can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve for May.  The official music video for “Heaven Bound Balloons” is set to premiere tonight at 7:00 PM EST, click here to set a reminder.

Taylor Swifts Drops Pure Pop Perfection “ME!” With Brendon Urie

Taylor Swift ME!

Taylor Swift doesn’t do anything small. This was on display yesterday as the pop-country phenom popped up in Nashville’s Gulch neighborhood at a mural she commissioned. For weeks, the internet has been buzzing about the mural, speculating that it was Swift’s. After her selfie-snapping appearance, she hijacked the NFL Draft in true Swift fashion, making sure football fans and non-fans alike tuned in. Appearing alongside Robin Roberts, the superstar announced her new single, “Me,” featuring Panic! At The Disco frontman Brendon Urie. The song dropped at midnight and Swifties and music fans were abuzz with excitement.

The song opens with Swift proclaiming, “I know that I’m a handful baby,” over a requisite drumbeat that builds throughout the song. We can already picture this song on awards shows and halftime performances, complete with a colorful pastel marching band, matching the motif of this new Swift Era. Gone is the dark Swift of Reputation, replaced by the magical unicorn version of the pop enigma.

On “ME!”, she trades verses with Urie, and the result is pure pop perfection, her clever lyrics masterfully sculpted over a catchy pop melody. In fact, only Swift could pull off a breakdown that begins with “Hey kids! Spelling is fun!” While it sounds cheesy, somehow it works incredibly well here. “I promise that you’ll never find another like me,” Swift declares here, and while some may call it narcissism, we call it truth.

While some fans speculated that #TS7 would be a return to the singer’s roots due to the Nashville popup mural, it looks like she’ll continue down the same pop path as Reputation and 1989. However, a cryptic tweet from the Dixie Chicks (and a music video Easter Egg) has fans speculating that there may be a collaboration in the future. Pop or country, there’s nothing Taylor Swift can’t do, and frankly, we can’t wait to see what she releases next.

To keep up with all things Taylor Swift, visit TaylorSwift.com and follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. She’ll be premiering this song at next week’s Billboard Music Awards, which also features performances by Dan + Shay and Kelly Clarkson.

“ME!” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Tyler Rich Premieres New Song and Video for “Leave Her Wild”

Tyler Rich "Leave Her Wild" Music Video

Tyler Rich “Leave Her Wild” Music Video

As the clock struck midnight, Valory Music Co. recording artist, Tyler Rich released his first song of the new year, entitled “Leave Her Wild.” With a loyal fanbase behind him, a successful self-titled debut album, which was released in 2018, and a sold-out touring gig with Brett Young on his resume, the singer is primed for an even bigger year in 2019.

Fans may be familiar with Rich’s newly released song, as he’s been performing “Leave Her Wild” live at shows over the past couple of months. The recording artist shared his excitement about the new track, as well as his appreciation for the fans’ support, sharing on his Twitter, “I’m SO beyond excited to finally release this song! The endless messages I’ve gotten from all of you since we started playing this live has meant so much to me. So, Thank you! If this song moves you, then please share it! #LeaveHerWild.”

The lyrically-focused track reminds people to never try to change the person they fell in love with. Rich beautifully articulates the importance of always remembering the little things you loved about your person, and to always allow he or she to stay true to themselves. The song is certainly one for Rich to celebrate.

“If you find a girl / Hands up / Hanging half way out on the highway / You find a girl / Like whiskey / Mixed in a handle of coffee / Find a girl who scares you half to death / You’d kill to be the train she wrecks / Don’t tell her, I never met someone like you / Then try to turn her into every girl you’ve ever knew / If you’re gonna love her / If you’re gonna love her / If you’re gonna love her / Leave her wild”

To elevate the song even more, Rich surprisingly dropped ‘A First Look’ music video to accompany the track. The visuals will put a smile on your face, as the camera flashes to clips of different people, children, and couples living freely, doing whatever they desire. The video ends with the image of Rich smiling ear to ear in the recording booth.

Catch the singer at Taste of Country Music Festival at New York’s Hunter Mountain in June, where NYCountry Swag will also set-up shop for the third year, so make sure to stop by! Additionally, Rich will make a stop at Nashville’s CMA Fest just days later. For tickets and more tour information, head to tylerrich.com

NYCS First Impression: Maddie & Tae ‘One Heart To Another’

Maddie & Tae

After some hardships, including switching labels, platinum-selling vocal duo Maddie & Tae (Maddie Marlow and Taylor Dye) are back on the country music scene armed with passion and perseverance. The singer-songwriters channel their experiences with heartbreak, loss, love, and redemption into a major comeback with the release of their new EP, One Heart to Another, the prelude to their upcoming sophomore album.

Both women have been vocal about the work they’ve put into this new record. In a recent press release, Marlow shared “This is much more than just a new project for us. It has been our light at the end of the tunnel for the past two years. It is about two best friends experiencing the highest of highs, the lowest of lows, and everything in between. We hope our fans hear the vulnerability, heartbreak, strength, truth, and passion we’ve poured into this. This is only the beginning.”

“We put our heads down and tried to be the best artists we could be. And to us that looked like writing lyrics from a very honest place and sharing them with the hopes that someone out in the world feels less alone. So here is One Heart to Another. From our hearts to yours,” added Dye.

From the moment the EP begins, the listener feels transported into the world of Maddie & Tae. Deeply personal, relatable, and special, each of the five tracks share a different side of the duo’s talents, as both singers and songwriters.

The record opens up with the flirty song, “Friends Don’t,” which the songstresses released last summer. The track, written by the women with Jon Nite and Justin Ebach, tells the story of a clever back and forth between a boy and a girl, who are ‘just friends,’ but clearly, there’s something more there. The women give words to the experience of managing mixed signals and emotions that are so prevalent in the beginning stages of a potential love interest.

Next, the EP transitions to track two, “Die From A Broken Heart,” a painfully beautiful and vulnerable ballad about heartbreak. In the song, the duo sings, “How does he sleep at night / Momma, the nerve of this guy / To leave me so easy / Am I gonna be alright / I wanna kick myself for falling so hard / Momma, can you die from a broken heart?” The women passionately emote their raw feelings, as they ask their mothers and fathers for advice following a difficult break-up.

Continuing to showcase different sides of their talents, Maddie & Tae sing about heartbreak and picking up the pieces in a new and fresh way on the next track entitled, “Tourist In This Town.” Written by the women with Barry Dean and Jimmy Robbins, the lyrics are about re-acquainting yourself with where you live after a break-up and having to navigate the emotions of feeling lost and like a stranger in your own town.

Maddie & Tae continue to pour their hearts out in the title track. The delightfully country ballad may be the most poignant of the five tracks. Beginning with a simple, but impactful instrumental, the women attempt to warn other women about a man, who constantly goes from girl to girl, explaining that “he goes from one heart to another,” and more importantly that his actions are not their fault. “But I’m going to tell you what the last one told me / From one heart to another / From one ex to the next lover / I’ve felt that spell your under / That kiss underneath those covers / When it’s good it don’t get better / He’ll make you feel like it’s forever / but from one ex to the next lover / He goes from one hear to another.”

Rounding out the impressive EP, Maddie & Tae include a sassy, upbeat song, “New Dog Old Tricks.” Giving off Miranda Lambert vibes, the singer-songwriters confidently play the field, poking fun at men at bars that think they’ve got game with women. It’s an empowering cut that fans are sure to jam out to when they need a pick me up. “Hey, baby, let me guess / You’ve never felt this before / My beauty takes your breath/ Boy get that jaw off the floor / Not my first rodeo / I know the way this goes / Now what baby, got a bone to pick / New dogs, old tricks.”

In just a few days, Maddie & Tae will kick off their opening gig on Carrie Underwood’s all-female headlining ‘2019 Cry Pretty Tour 360,’ alongside Runaway June. The tour stops at New York City’s iconic Madison Square Garden on October 2nd. For tickets and more tour information head to maddieandtae.com.

Teddy Robb Releases Somber New Track “Tell Me How”

Teddy Robb, Photo by: Matthew Berinato

Teddy Robb, Photo by: Matthew Berinato

Here at NYCountry Swag, we’ve been waiting patiently for Teddy Robb to release his new song “Tell Me How” to the public.  We had the opportunity to hear the 2019 Artist to Watch sing the track back in November when he hosted an intimate evening in Nashville at the Douglas Café with songwriters Ryan Beaver and Heather Morgan.

Unlike his first two singles, “Really Shouldn’t Drink Around You” and “Lead Me On,” “Tell Me How” has a more somber vibe. The singer shares a personal side of himself as the song is about a breakup and how the singer is having a difficult time moving on. Like anyone dealing with heartbreak, he is wondering where his ex is now and playing back what happened for the relationship to end.

“Tell me you’re okay / Tell me you made it through / Tell me you’re over me /  You don’t think about me and you / Tell me you can sleep at night / Tell me your happy now / Tell me you’ve moved on / Then tell me how”

Robb then goes into how he has tried to get over the breakup which included going to church, drinking, going on a date, and going to Mexico. These coping mechanisms are all very relatable, who hasn’t wanted to get away from the real world or try and quickly move on after the end of a relationship?

Overall, the singer-songwriter hopes that his ex is doing better off than he is and if they can share their tips, as he hasn’t figured out just quite how to let go. Whether or not the track is about Robb or a friend, the honest lyrics tug at the heartstrings and teaches us that not everyone gets over a breakup right away and that’s just fine.
