NYCS Woman of the Month Jessica Valiyi, Digital Strategy for Sony Music Nashville

We’re bringing you stories from women who are chasing their dreams and building a life that they love with New York Country Swag’s, “Woman of the Month.”

Each month, we highlight a different female pursuing her passions. Introducing you to women who are taking risks, working relentlessly and turning their dreams into reality. These are empowering women who serve as role models and should be celebrated.

Jess Valiyi

For this month we celebrate Jessica Valiyi, Associate Director, Digital Strategy for Sony Music Nashville. Growing up in Carmel, Indiana, she recalls all of her extracurricular activities outside of school revolved around music. She learned to play the drums when she was 10 years old and said she was a music fanatic in high school, although, she wasn’t a huge fan of country music until college. “I’m the oldest child, I didn’t have a big sibling or anyone to talk to but I felt like music was always there for me,” she says. While attending college at Indiana University in Bloomington, Valiyi’s friends she met on her dorm room floor freshman year introduced her to modern country and she instantly fell in love with the lyrics and storytelling. Some of her first favorite artists were Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift, and the Dixie Chicks.  “I remember listening to the lyrics, and that is what drew me in, they have substance and meaning compared to anyone else I was listening to at the time,” she recalls. After college, she took a job in biotech and medical device company and worked part-time at the local country radio station doing promotions and marketing and helped with their social media. “I feel like there are two types of people in this world, you are either motivated by money or you are motivated by passion and I am the passionate one,” she states. Finding herself looking forward more and more to her side gig at the radio station, she happened to meet Alex Valentine who at the time worked the Northeast promotions for Big Machine Label Group. After talking to him about how she could ‘do what he does’ in the industry, she took that information and chance meeting to heart and a year later made the move to Nashville. Valentine gave her words of advice that she carries with her today, “You have to be present to win”.

Jessica Valiyi Woman of the Month

Mitchell Tenpenny at Wal Mart on the night of his debut album release

Just two months after moving, she took her dream job, a part-time gig with Big Machine Label Group, home to Taylor Swift and Rascal Flatts, the two artists that helped to cultivate her love for the genre. One of her mains jobs was to help the digital team and assist in keeping Swift’s music off the internet and mainly off of YouTube. She laughs talking about all of the tweets she saved from fans who would try to find her music and couldn’t without buying the actual album, something that proved she was successful in that task.

In December of 2017, she made the move over to Sony Music Nashville and during our conversation, recalls a moment that really has come full circle since moving over to her new position. “The first week I lived in Nashville I went Belcourt Taps. It was Heather Morgan, Jimmy Robbins, Laura Veltz, and Maren Morris and it was my first writers round and I remember thinking ‘Why isn’t this girl an artist?’ I went up to her after and told her how incredible her voice and songs were. Most off her EP and one other song called ‘Loose Change’” Valiyi recalls “I was following Maren’s career when I was at Big Machine and I remember being so bummed that she went to Sony but now it’s just full circle.” The moment becomes even more poignant this week that the Sony Music Nashville team gets to celebrate Morris’ second number one song, “GIRL”.

Maren Morris and Sony Music Nashville Team

Her day to day jobs as the Associate Director of Digital Strategy for Sony Music Nashville include helping her artists on fan engagement, email marketing, websites, digital advertising, coming up with creative content, collaborating with digital partners and essentially anything directly related to helping grow the fan base. Her clients at Sony include Maren Morris, Miranda Lambert, Luke Combs, Old Dominion, Mitchell Tenpenny, Pistol Annies, Tenille Townes, Jameson Rodgers, The Sisterhood Band, and Ryan Hurd. “One thing that drew me to digital is the space is constantly changing. You really have to be one step ahead of everyone, finding out what the newest, coolest, greatest thing is,” Valiyi says. “You don’t just use specific things because everyone uses it, it has to make sense for your individual clients. It’s trying to keep up with the trends and how to incorporate them with our artists.”

Jessica Valiyi

She passionately talks about the fans and how there would be no country music industry without them and how she loves that the digital space is the department that is closest to the fan. One artist she highlights in our interview is Luke Combs. “Luke Combs is so dialed in, everything he does is for the fans, he says ‘They are the ones who are providing me this life and this career’, that’s why I love working for him. Yes, my job is social media, yes my job is in the digital space and content but it’s also listening to fans.” An example of how Combs continues to give the fans exactly what they want by uploading unedited videos of unreleased songs.

When we talk about what advice she would give to young people in the industry she says, “Our industry is so small, networking is huge. The more you are around and people can see you and see what you do, I feel like that goes a long way, every opportunity I’ve gotten in Nashville has come from someone I’ve networked with.” She also highlights the importance of accepting that you won’t know everything and not being afraid to ask questions or to learn from others around you. She quotes Steve Jobs saying “I don’t care about being right. I care about success and doing the right thing.” as something she refers to often. She hopes to empower the people who work with her but when she is in a leadership role, she is the first one to also listen and learn from them as well.

We are so grateful for all of the women who not only take time out of their busy schedules to chat with us but also teach us their stories and share advice with us. We want to thank Jess Valiyi for her guidance and friendship to NYCountry Swag over the past few years and we look forward to continue to champion her and her incredible artists.

Brantley Gilbert Releases Emotional Video for “Man That Hung The Moon”

Ever since becoming a father, Brantley Gilbert has shared just how much being a father really means to him and created a very personal song to dedicate to his children. Gilbert shared on Instagram, “One of these days my son and future daughter are gonna realize I’m no superhero…. When I have to tell them I’m not the man that hung the moon…. if I’ve done my job right… they’ll know to hit their knees to find the Man who did.”

Getting inspiration in the hospital room when his son Barrett was born, Gilbert sings, “Lost my breath when I saw you take your first / My whole world stopped like that / And I ain’t the cryin’ type / But I just saw your eyes / Words just can’t describe what I see / You look just like me.”

The “Man That Hung The Moon” video perfectly shows the affection the Georgia native and his family have for each other. Clips put together from time in the studio, on the road, and his personal life, fans get an inside look at the balance Gilbert keeps. The passionate video starts with Gilbert getting up on stage after stage every night to perform but you can tell on his face backstage that he is missing something. Fast forward to clips of his son walking around the tour buses and his wife Amber out on the road and in the studio. Barrett seems to love being on the road and getting ice cream with his dad and watching the shows backstage with his mom. While touring keeps the family busy, they make an effort to have uninterrupted time on the road and to enjoy each other’s company. We picked this one as one of our July Monthly picks, check it out here.

Gilbert and his wife are expecting a little girl early fall and a new album is rumored to be released about the same time. The tough country singer has turned a page, soon to be a father of two, sharing a more personal side to him in each song he releases.

To keep up with Gilbert, follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Swag Sessions Featuring Clare Bowen

Many of you know Clare Bowen from her starring role on the hit television series, Nashville where she played Scarlett O’Connor. The sixth and final season of Nashville which originally aired on ABC and then was picked up by CMT ended a year ago this month and since then, Bowen has been busy promoting her very own album. Her self-titled album, which we reviewed here became available in the U.S earlier this month and she is playing City Winery in NYC tonight.

Earlier today, Bowen and her husband Brandon Robert Young joined New York Country Swag earlier this morning to sing two songs from the album, “Little By Little” and “All The Beds I’ve Made” and to chat with our Managing Editor, Christina. During our conversation, Bowen revealed the story behind one of the most poignant songs on the album, “Warrior” which she wrote for the families and children she saw suffering when she was battling childhood cancer. Who Is Kylie Morgan? The Story Behind Her Journey to Country Music

Who is Kylie Morgan? The singer-songwriter joined us to chat about her journey to country music. Get to know the rising star here…

Kylie Morgan

The Beginning:

It was announced just last week that Kylie Morgan signed a record deal with Universal Music Group Nashville and this week she is our Swag Spotlight. In our recent interview, Morgan told us how although her childhood was different from most, growing up performing and honing in on her talents, she wouldn’t change it for the world.

She tells us at 3 years old she was constantly singing and dancing to Shirley Temple videos in her living room, forcing her parents to sit on the couch as she entertained them. From that moment on not only did she know exactly what she wanted to do with her life, but her parents continued to support her childhood dreams. She started writing songs when she was only 10 years old and when she was 12 years old she got her very first guitar. “I just couldn’t put it down, after that it became my form of therapy. I would come home from school, lock myself in my room and write about what I was going through and what my friends were going through and I figured out that it brought me so much happiness,” she recalls.

She started performing at Rodeo Opry in Oklahoma in a sparkly Walmart dress and then began touring professionally when she was only 14 years old and traveling back and forth to Nashville to write. She even remembers writing with one of our favorite songwriter artists, Walker Hayes when she was just 15.

The Turning Point:

Making the move to Nashville permanently when she was 19, she met hit songwriter Shane McAnally who she says ‘changed her life’. She signed a management deal with Shane’s company, SMACK Songs because she said it felt like home. “I’m such a family oriented person and I’m still so close with my family so when I chose a music family out here in Nashville, it was very intimating because I wanted to have that same relationship in my career space that I did in my home life,” Morgan says. “As soon as I met the whole staff at SMACK, I felt friendship and family that I haven’t felt in years as far as music goes.”

Her debut single released just last Friday, “Boys Girl” is the first introduction to the bubbly, singer and she says it’s completely autobiographical. “Even before this song was written I wanted the first single to be written about who I am as an artist and as a human being, I wanted people to hear the first song and never have a question of who I was and what I wanted to accomplish,” she explains.

Today:

Although the song was written with her childhood as a tomboy in mind, her hope is that the lyrics become more universal. “It’s not just about me specifically but it’s about embracing who you are and realizing that we are all different, we all come in different colors, shapes, and sizes and anyone can be a ‘boys girl’ and embrace what makes you, you.”

As a newly signed artist and songwriter, Morgan is living the dream she had as a young girl in Oklahoma. “It’s been such a long and built up thing but it’s crazy, I just had my birthday a couple of weeks ago, every time you blow out the candles, this is what you wish for,” she humbly tells us. With her debut album in the works and opening for artists like Aaron Watson and Kip Moore this summer, the young rising artist looks ahead to radio tour and promoting the new music that she has been preparing to show the world for years.

To keep up with Kylie Morgan follow her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

NYCS First Impression: Avenue Beat Debut EP

Avenue Beat

One of Big Machine Label Group’s newest acts, Avenue Beat are storming the country scene as an empowering girl group comprised of Sami Bearden, Savana Santos, and Sam Backoff. These girls can be categorized with some of the powerful rising female artists that NYCountrySwag has spotlighted such as Twinnie, Runaway June, Lacy Cavalier, and more! If Avenue Beat’s new and fresh sound is not enough to get you hooked their style is bringing something unique and modern to country music. Available now the ladies released their debut self-titled EP filled with sass and flair.

The first track on their EP is a song called “Delight” which is one of our favorites. It is humorous and catchy while also spreading an important message to its audience. “Delight” is the perfect way to tell a prospective date that you have self-love and are a delight to be around and should they feel should feel honored date them. At first listen this one should bring a smile to your face because usually in country music melancholy ballads about breakups are prevalent, however, Avenue Beat puts a spin on that classic heartbroken feeling and makes it into a happy and humorous song. Another song on the EP has the same positive spin on a classic ballad feeling is “Ruin That For Me” which stresses a break up is not going to ruin how one feels about certain places, songs, and memories the couple once had. Avenue Beat carries this breakup song not with a slow tempo and somber beat but with a catchy chorus and anthem-like lyrics.

“Be a Bro” is a song about female empowerment and the importance of “girl code.” This girlfriend anthem about women helping each other throughout life is a great addition to Avenue Beat’s EP and what these three friends stand for. “If you hold a sister down /It will all come back around/ So be a bro, know the girl code” the contrasts of the title and the concept of the song also caught our attention as a listener. The final song of Avenue Beat’s EP the three girls give more of an acoustic stripped song on “Broke (Wrktp).” This track solidifies to fans that money is not necessary to feel worth. They add, “Don’t got a lot a cash or a lot of green/ But I don’t need no riches to be feeling like a queen.” The contrast of having no riches and still feeling like a queen followed by the chorus repeating “I’m broke but I’m living happily all my life” genuinely show these girls are happy where they are.

While Avenue Beat is a new girl group in the country music world their future is looking bright because they sing truly authentic songs. Their new sound as Avenue Beat’s website coined it, “…lands somewhere between Taylor Swift ascending and Billie Eilish at her most real” will be a powerful force in the music world.

To keep up with Avenue Beat follow them on FacebookTwitterand Instagram.

Dierks Bentley Brings His “Burning Man Tour” to PNC Bank Arts Center in NJ

According to Dierks Bentley himself, “Jersey never disappoints and always brings the energy.” That is an extremely accurate statement to describe his stop of the Burning Man Tour at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey. Joined by Tenille Townes, Jon Pardi, and even Hot Country Knights, Bentley’s alter-ego’s 90’s country band, the show was definitely a night to remember.

Burning Man Tour

Hot Country Knights set was up first. Once on stage, the band was met with some skepticism from the audience, that was until they figured out who the lead singer truly was. Although average concert-goers may have missed it, the singer with the animal print muscle tee, high waisted bootleg jeans and mullet was none other than Dierks Bentley himself. This set was really a sight to see, as Bentley’s band joined him by dressing up in 90’s outfits and wigs and playing music that sounded like it came straight from that decade. The 20-minute set ended too quickly, as the audience, and even members of the band erupted into laughter and applause.

Tenille Townes Burning Man Tour

Next up was the first true opener, country singer-songwriter Tenille Townes. Opening with “White Horse,” The 25-year-old Canadian native shocked the audience with her power vocals and poignant lyrics. As her set went on, it was clear that the audience was getting more and more into her music. With each song, more people stood to their feet and swayed along. After performing “Jersey on the Wall,” Townes told the audience that this was her first time playing at PNC, and it definitely lived up to the hype. She went on to cover, U2’s, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” and ended her set with her debut single, “Somebody’s Daughter.” For more about Townes and her incredible talent click here.

Jon Pardi Burning Man Tour

Jon Pardi was next to take the stage– and he for sure brought the party. Opening with “What I Can’t Put Down,” followed by a Brooks & Dunn cover of, “My Next Broken Heart,” which was featured on their album REBOOT fans knew they were in for a treat. He continued by playing a few songs off of his 2016 album, California Sunrise. Eventually, he got to “Heartache Medication,” his current single off of his new album which is due September 27th. Being that he was playing to a Jersey crowd, Pardi would’ve been remiss not to honor a song to a New Jersey icon. So that’s exactly what he did by playing Bon Jovi’s, “Wanted Dead or Alive,” which was sung word for word by the audience. Pardi ended his high energy set by playing three of his classics– “Heartache on the Dance Floor,” “Head Over Boots,” and “Dirt On My Boots.”

Dierks Bentley Burning Man Tour

After two, well, technically three amazing openers, it was finally time for Bentley to take the stage. Starting with “Burning Man,” Bentley captivated the audience with his simple stage set up and powerful presence. After performing his hit song, “Somewhere on a Beach,” Bentley paid homage to the Jersey Shore and even did a call-response with the audience to see where they were from– the choices being north, south, or central Jersey– central being met with the loudest response. Bentley followed with “Black,” and “I Hold On,” two slow and deeply meaningful songs. Those were then contrasted by the upbeat songs “5-1-5-0” and “Living,” Bentley’s current single. It was refreshing to see those two sides of Bentley, both the serious and lightheartedness of his personality was really able to shine through.

About halfway through the set, Bentley brought Jon Pardi back out onto the stage to perform, “Missin’ You Crazy,” Bentley’s favorite song by Pardi. This was followed by Tenille Townes coming back on stage to teach Bentley a little something about female country singers. She sang a tidbit of “Strawberry Wine,” belted out some of “Man! I Feel Like a Woman,” and eventually joined Bentley in singing his massive hit, “Different for Girls.” Next, while singing “Am I The Only One,” Bentley made his way through the amphitheater and crowd to tiny B-stage near the back of the venue.

Dierks Bentley

Once on the B-stage, Bentley pulled a fan onto the stage, swiftly shotgunned a beer, and began a quick acoustic set which consisted of “Come a Little Closer” and “Say You Do,” before returning back to the main stage to finish out the show. Although nearing the end, the crowd was still as rowdy as ever while singing along to “What was I Thinkin’” and “Sideways.” These were the last two songs before the encore, as Bentley thanked the crowd for another amazing and unforgettable show. Walking out to do the encore in a full-on pilot getup, the audience already knew what was coming, as “Drunk on a Plane” was sung in unison by the whole crowd. Bentley played “Free and Easy” to end what was an exhilarating night at PNC.

Dierks Bentley’s Burning Man Tour will be around all summer so make sure not to miss it. The tour will also be stopping at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater on August 2nd, so get your tickets now!

HARDY Named Vevo DSCVR Artist & Releases Two Live Videos

HARDY VEVO

This past week Vevo DSCVR has teamed up with another rising force in country music, HARDY. Vevo teams up with emerging artists and through new performance content, they share these upcoming talents with the world.

HARDY came out with two brand new videos for “Rednecker” and “4×4,” two hits off his THIS OLE BOY EP. “4X4” calls out the boys that think they are country just by driving a big truck and tells about all the situations a 4X4 is good for. From getting out from a ditch to shedding light on the real reason girls love big pickups, HARDY knows how to get it done. The song highlights a lot of rock elements while still sticking true to the singer’s roots.

Everyone should know that HARDY is rednecker than all of us and his song proves that. The Big Loud artist grew up in Philadelphia, Miss., a town of about 7,500 in the country setting of Neshoba County. So when he sings about being from a small town, you know he is telling the truth. Fitted with red lights and a camo hat, the “Rednecker” celebrates all the ways he is country without a doubt. From killing copperheads, flinging dirt, sitting in lawn chairs drinking or mudding, people are catching on to HARDY’s way of life and the song is soaring up the charts.

Past rising country artists to work with VEVO are Devin Dawson, Brandon Lay, and Mitchell Tenpenny. The family at Vevo works hands-on with each artist to ensure they are getting the most reach with each venture as a team. Between these new killer videos, touring with Florida Georgia Line on the Can’t Say I Ain’t Country Tour, and HARDY’s latest EP Where To Find Me, he is on a roll this year with no signs of stopping. The singer-songwriter is putting out true country music with a clear refreshing artist identity. We caught up with HARDY before his set last weekend out on Long Island, watch the full interview below.

Why Maren Morris’ “GIRL” Hitting The Number One Spot This Week Is So Important

Maren Morris Girl Number One

Justin Aharoni (@jaharoni) for NYCountry Swag

Many country fans who listen to the radio or stream their favorite songs may not understand how a song goes number one on the charts and their involvement in that process.  For example, in order for a song to hit the top of the charts, it has to be played across streaming and radio, A LOT. If you are listening to a song on the radio and don’t change the channel, that helps a song move up on the charts.  This week, Maren Morris has claimed the top spot on the country chart with the title track to her latest album, “GIRL”. This is only the second female artist this year to take the top spot on the charts, the last being Kelsea Ballerini with “Miss Me More” back in June. Prior to that, Ballerini topped the charts but back in February of 2018 with “Legends”. Three songs in a year and a half. “I don’t know what to say except thank you. I won’t even wipe my tears because I’m proud of them and what this song has done. @thehighwomen made their debut and GIRL is the number 1 song in the country. We did it.”

Songs like “Miss Me More” and “GIRL” being the two tracks to break through the macho-made glass ceiling says something about what women listening to country music want to hear. We are over listening to songs about girls getting ready for a date with their dream man or looking to get violent revenge on their cheating ex. With lyrics like “I forgot I had dreams, I forgot I had wings / Forgot who I was before I ever kissed you / Yeah, I thought I’d miss you, but I miss me more” and “Draw your comparisons, tryin’ to find who’s lesser than / I don’t wanna wear your crown, there’s enough to go around” Ballerini and Morris who were both co-writers on these smash hits are singing about loving themselves enough to introspectively stand up for themselves and other women. Morris opens her video for “GIRL” by saying “Um, I think it just comes down to, we don’t want more than anyone else, we want the same as everyone else”.

So why this piece now, when there is a number one song each week, why are we highlighting this week in particular? Well, besides showcasing the scarcity of females on the charts, we wanted to celebrate the fact that this past week, acclaimed and Grammy-nominated songwriter, Nicolle Galyon, announced a huge partnership with Big Loud Records to head an all-female label named Songs & Daughters. Galyon herself has hit the top spots on the charts with songs like “Tequila” for Dan + Shay and “Automatic” for Miranda Lambert.

Another incredible newsworthy item for females in this genre is The Highwomen making their debut. As if Morris didn’t have enough going on, she chose to join a band with Brandi Carlile, Amanda Shires, and Natalie Hemby, record an entire album and release two of the songs this week and last. The supergroup’s name is a play on The Highwaymen which featured Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings. Their first two releases, “Redesigning Women” and “Crowded Table” are both anthems for women today, emphasizing inclusiveness and just how badass women are with lyrics like “A critical reason there’s a population / Raising our brows at a new generation / Rosie the Riveter with renovations / And always gets better with wine” and “I want a house with a crowded table / And a place by the fire for everyone / Let us take on the world while we’re young and able / And bring us back together when the day is done”.

GIRL Ryan Hurd

If we can learn anything from “GIRL”, and the ladies in this music industry: There’s enough to go around and to continue to lift each other up, praise each other’s successes and hope that these little victories for women actually help to turn the tides in the right direction. Congratulations to Maren Morris on her number one!
