Kylie Morgan

The Beginning:

It was announced just last week that Kylie Morgan signed a record deal with Universal Music Group Nashville and this week she is our Swag Spotlight. In our recent interview, Morgan told us how although her childhood was different from most, growing up performing and honing in on her talents, she wouldn’t change it for the world.

She tells us at 3 years old she was constantly singing and dancing to Shirley Temple videos in her living room, forcing her parents to sit on the couch as she entertained them. From that moment on not only did she know exactly what she wanted to do with her life, but her parents continued to support her childhood dreams. She started writing songs when she was only 10 years old and when she was 12 years old she got her very first guitar. “I just couldn’t put it down, after that it became my form of therapy. I would come home from school, lock myself in my room and write about what I was going through and what my friends were going through and I figured out that it brought me so much happiness,” she recalls.

She started performing at Rodeo Opry in Oklahoma in a sparkly Walmart dress and then began touring professionally when she was only 14 years old and traveling back and forth to Nashville to write. She even remembers writing with one of our favorite songwriter artists, Walker Hayes when she was just 15.

The Turning Point:

Making the move to Nashville permanently when she was 19, she met hit songwriter Shane McAnally who she says ‘changed her life’. She signed a management deal with Shane’s company, SMACK Songs because she said it felt like home. “I’m such a family oriented person and I’m still so close with my family so when I chose a music family out here in Nashville, it was very intimating because I wanted to have that same relationship in my career space that I did in my home life,” Morgan says. “As soon as I met the whole staff at SMACK, I felt friendship and family that I haven’t felt in years as far as music goes.”

Her debut single released just last Friday, “Boys Girl” is the first introduction to the bubbly, singer and she says it’s completely autobiographical. “Even before this song was written I wanted the first single to be written about who I am as an artist and as a human being, I wanted people to hear the first song and never have a question of who I was and what I wanted to accomplish,” she explains.

Today:

Although the song was written with her childhood as a tomboy in mind, her hope is that the lyrics become more universal. “It’s not just about me specifically but it’s about embracing who you are and realizing that we are all different, we all come in different colors, shapes, and sizes and anyone can be a ‘boys girl’ and embrace what makes you, you.”

As a newly signed artist and songwriter, Morgan is living the dream she had as a young girl in Oklahoma. “It’s been such a long and built up thing but it’s crazy, I just had my birthday a couple of weeks ago, every time you blow out the candles, this is what you wish for,” she humbly tells us. With her debut album in the works and opening for artists like Aaron Watson and Kip Moore this summer, the young rising artist looks ahead to radio tour and promoting the new music that she has been preparing to show the world for years.
