NYCS Attends 3rd Country Radio Seminar (CRS) 2020 Recap

For the third year in a row, the NYCountry Swag team headed to Nashville to participate in Country Radio Seminar.  CRS for short takes place each February creates memories and celebrates incredible musical moments.  CRS is an annual three-day convention where country music and the radio industry gather to exchange ideas, set trends, introduce brands, launch artists and make decisions that affect every aspect of the genre’s future.   The seminar includes new music from rising artists as well as some of the most established artists in the business. For some of the best moments and the most exclusive shots, check out our highlight reel on Instagram here.

CMT CRS

We flew down to Nashville a day early to meet with our friends at UMG and EBMedia as well as attend an event hosted by CMT regarding Equal Play. Leslie Fram, Coleman Insights, Dr. Jada E. Watson, Cody Alan, Cris Lacy & Mike Molinar sat down in a panel setting to discuss research that was conducted about what fans want to hear on country radio and discuss ideas and brainstorm ways to give more equal representation to women on the radio.

After checking into our room at The Omni, where the seminar takes place, we headed to the first major event of the week, the Warner Luncheon where artists like Cody Johnson, Ashley McBryde, Shy Carter, and one of our 2020 Artists to Watch Gabby Barrett. This event allows these artists to perform just one song for a room full of media and radio programmers from across the country. We were also in the presence of greatness on so many levels, Kenny Chesney. He was awarded the Artist Humanitarian Award for all of the incredible work he has done to change the world. After a humble and incredible acceptance speech, Chesney played some of his biggest hits including “Save It For A Rainy Day” and “Get Along”.

CRS 2020

That evening we also headed to Sony Girls Night Out which featured an amazing group performance from  The Sisterhood Band, Tenille Townes, and Rachel Wammack. We stopped by FGL House to catch up with our friends at Big Machine Label Group including Tyler Rich, and Avenue Beat. We then caught Brett Young in an intimate setting at the Country Music Hall of Fame and ended our night at the Warner Wednesday cocktail party.

Day two was jam-packed as well, kicking things off with one of the most epic events of the week, the UMG Luncheon at the Ryman. With an unprecedented amount of performers this year, CRS attendees were in awe of the caliber of talent presented that day including Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Luke Bryan, Sam Hunt, Jon Pardi, Brandon Lay, Caylee Hammack, Adam Hambrick, Kylie Morgan, Parker McCollum, Kip Moore, Brothers Osborne, and Travis Denning. Hot Country Knights, kicked things off with an electric performance of their debut single “Pick Her Up”  Mickey Guyton took the stage to perform a brand new song, “What Are You Gonna Tell Her” which highlights the struggles women are facing in today’s society and the song, her emotion, and her performance elicited a standing ovation from the entire venue. Then he biggest surprise of the week so far was that legendary artist Reba was joining UMG once again and she performed her iconic hit “Fancy” for the crowd.

CRS 2020 LUke Bryan2020

Next up we celebrated the release of Luke Bryan’s new brand of beer Two Lane and then headed to the Sony Showcase with Niko Moon, Tenille Townes, and our very first Swag Session artist Adam Doleac.

hardy Nashville CRS

After the showcase, we caught Hardy’s first-ever headlining Nashville show thanks to our friends at Big Loud and Sweet Talk PR. It was an honor to catch the tour not only when it came to New York City but now in Nashville, as one of our 2020 Artists to Watch and favorite rising stars impressed the crowd. He brought Hunter Phelps, Jameson Rodgers out to perform “My Kinda Livin”, as well as a guest appearance from Devin Dawson on his current single, “One Beer”.

The final day of CRS brought the Big Machine Label Group luncheon where Florida Georgia Line kicked things off by performing not only their debut breakout hit “Cruise” but their current single “Blessings” and thanked country radio for their support over the years. We also heard new music from vocal powerhouse Danielle Bradbery, saw newcomer Payton Smith and many more. The ladies of Avenue Beat performed for the crowd and Lady Antebellum closed out the event. It was also announced with a special appearance that Tim McGraw would be returning to Big Machine Label, a place that he celebrated a ton of success with earlier on in his career.

One of our favorite events each year, CRS New Faces closes out the 3-day seminar. This sit-down dinner encourages attendees to dress to the nines, experience a cocktail reception and full dinner before being entertained by 5 of the genre’s most promising rising artists, all who had an incredible year. This year, Riley Green, Ingrid Andress, Morgan Evans, Runaway June, and Mitchell Tenpenny were being honored. All of these artists have been named NYCountry Swag Artists to Watch in the past few years. Performing their biggest hits to date, we watched these inspiring acts win over the entire room.

Another memorable trip to Nashville for our company. We already can’t wait for CRS 2021.

Lauren Davidson Hosts Inaugural ‘Urban Country Jam’ In NYC

Tommy Cole Urban Country

Others may think country music doesn’t have a home in NYC, but you walk into Urban Country Jam at the Cutting Room, and you realize you are clearly mistaken. Already packed and buzzing shortly after doors opening, everyone was ready to witness this lineup and enjoy a beautiful Saturday night in the city. Tommy Cole, who frequently collaborates with headliner Lauren Davidson, opened to an energized crowd with his acoustic guitar and the true gritty country we all love. Talking about dirt roads, swings under oak trees, and barefoot strolls, you instantly get immersed into the life outside of the city.

Annie Brobst Urban Country

Annie Brobst followed, who we saw at Taste of Country last June. She’s got a little Miranda Lambert sound and has a way of making any song she sings tell her story. Sparkly booties in tow, “Little Girl Dreams” and “Still Water” followed with a folk-country vibe. She also played a rendition of “Whiskey Glasses” by Morgan Wallen that she made sound like her own.

Raquel & the Wildflowers were next, with Raquel in a cute sparkly dress and a ton of energy to fire up the crowd. They started with their single “Hot July (Summer Love)”. Amazing covers of “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” and “Superstition” grabbed anyone who didn’t happen to already be a country fan, and “Little White Church” by Little Big Town followed, a song that got everyone dancing.

Lauren Davidson, with a fringe leather jacket, finally graced the stage, and the fans went wild. We’ve been fans of and supported her since our inception here in the Big Apple and we were so proud to be in attendance for this event. She found me before the show and expressed her sincere gratitude for coming, and that kindness and joy was evident when she began.

Her mom was running merchandise, she said that none of this would have been possible without her father, and as a local NYC-based artist, it truly was a family affair. She played “Tear Down This House”, that with the true vocals and the beat, is a force to be reckoned with. She released a new single on Valentine’s Day, “Love Ain’t Fair”, which she played and was a hit with the crowd. Davidson’s got a lot of edge and rock in her sound that makes a huge statement and reflects the grit it takes to work in New York. She played some of Shania Twain’s hits, “That Don’t Impress Me Much”, and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” that had all the ladies dancing by the end of the night. New York City creates a true home for country music, and Davidson’s success, along with the rest of the artists, makes that evident. We can’t wait to welcome more to our country family.

To keep up with Davidson follow her on TwitterInstagram, and Facebook.

Jimmie Allen & Noah Cyrus Collaborate on Love Song “This Is Us”

Noah Cyrus Jimmie Allen

This new one from Jimmie Allen and Noah Cyrus considers the transition that relationships demand from us. It compares the person that was to the individual that is created because of a newfound commitment to another. The past and the present versions are referred to in this track but what’s most important is who is responsible for that change. “This is Us” categorizes love for what it is. In order for romance to last, there must be an effort made as well as an open mind to grow at the same rate as the promise made to be together.

“All I really know is love ain’t simple” and “But it was just you and that was just me / Before we found love / Now this is us” are the two lyrics that stand out and act as the main points of this song.

Allen and Cyrus actually sound similar to Kane Brown and Lauren Alaina in “What Ifs”. The same approach is utilized whereas both artists join in on the chorus while the rest of the song is primarily designated for one. Though, Noah Cyrus has her own verse while Alaina gives her voice to background vocals. It’s powerful when the female is given a piece to perform alone and the melody softens. Brantley Gilbert and Lindsey Ell execute this technique in “What Happens in a Small Town” as well. In each song, the melody picks up again directly after and both voices blend for another chorus.

“This is Us” is everything you need in a song and, perhaps, everything you need to hear about your love life.

To keep up with Jimmie Allen, follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

“This is Us” is now available everywhere you buy or stream. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

NYCS Swag Spotlight Rachele Lynae

Rachele Lynae

Giving a voice to women in country music is something we take immense pride in, so shining our light on Rachele Lynae this week for our Swag Spotlight was just as exciting. We got the inside scoop about Lynae’s upcoming record, how she came to find success in the industry, and of course, how she feels about the importance of female artists in the genre.

Spending her childhood in Kodiak Alaska, Lynae remembers music being a staple in her household. Although one might assume that country music is not big in her home state, the singer-songwriter shares with us that she grew up on two types of music, with of course country being one of the two.

“I was told I started singing before I was really talking,” she tells us. “My dad played guitar and sings and he hasn’t really done it professionally, but I grew up with that constant influence, and he would just play a lot of country music. I grew up on two types of music, country and gospel. It’s always been a part of my roots.”

Although she did not grow up in the hub of country music per-say, Lynae cannot recall a time, where she didn’t want to sing for a living. After hearing about Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, the songstress knew that was where she belonged, and after graduating high school, she followed her path to Music City. “The idea of getting to go to school and studying music and not having to take a break from [my] career, and to go to school and further my career was really what brought me down here,” she explains.

Lynae grew up on 90s country, where female musicians ruled the airwaves. She has been inspired by mega-successful singers like Faith Hill, Martina McBride, Shania Twain, and of course, Reba. These talented superstars not only helped her to fall in love with the genre but also influenced how she creates her own sound and style in her music.

According to Lynae, “When you listen to [her] music you can hear the country roots, but you also hear a pop influence in it,” adding, “I think that a lot to those women, definitely Faith Hill and Shania have the same type of marriage of the genres.”

For Lynae, it took her six years after her self-titled release to finally nail down her artistry and perfectly blend her country and pop sound together. In May, the songstress will release her sophomore studio album entitled Every Reason. “It really will cover the spectrum of different places in relationships, but this album as a whole,” she tells us, “Is full of every reason that I love my husband, as well as, every reason I love making music.”

The singer-songwriter co-wrote all twelve of the tracks and will continue to release a song each month off the record, until its release date. Currently, Lynae has released two sassy tunes, “Braggin On Ya” and “Can You.” The former depicts her love for her husband, while the latter is basically a ‘you wish’ anthem to an ex, who realizes too little too late that they want you back.

Although topically the record is diverse, it is connected by authenticity. “This album is more just straight up me,” she declares, “I let myself really enjoy it and not worry about fitting into a box and made the music that was true to me and that I enjoy and I’m really excited to share it.” We cannot wait to see how the singer-songwriter continues to blossom this year.

Travis Denning Cuts Deep on Clever Revenge Breakup Anthem “ABBY”

Travis Denning ABBY

Travis Denning, an upcoming country star signed with Mercury Nashville and released a vengeful and punch single, “ABBY”. This track follows Denning’s success with his current top 20 single “After a Few”, a song that details lustful and romantic feelings after a few drinks. The release of “ABBY” is extra special: not only did it come out on Valentine’s Day, but the sharp-witted title that doubles as an acronym for “Any Body But You” caught the attention of fans after Denning played the tune a few times on the road.

Denning is known for his songwriting abilities, but this new single was written by Ashley Gorley, Matt Jenkins, and Chase McGill. The singer recounts exclusively to PEOPLE that “the minute [he] heard this song, [he] knew [he] had to record it, because [his] instant reaction was, ‘man, I wish I wrote that”.

The Georgia native sings with passion and fury, all the while not taking the concept of the song too seriously. Beginning with cunning, straight to the point lyrics, the listener is immediately clued into the song’s sassy way of telling a story.

“I hate to break it to ya girl, but we’re breaking up // I’ve put up with your drama just about long enough // And now you wanna know if there’s somebody else // Well if I’m being honest then the answer is yes // And her name is Abby, that’s anybody but you”

The bold and frisky tune begins with a fast-paced, playful riff that leads into the explosive country rooted chorus. Denning’s powerful vocals belt the song’s punch line, “And her name is Abby,”, leaving the listener with a captivating sense of emotion and strong desire to stand up and shout.

Throughout the song, Denning smoothly transitions back and forth from a fresh, pop sound to his deep country core. The listener is constantly kept on their toes for more nimble digs and compelling melodies.

Denning has an exciting touring schedule, as he’s starting off 2020 with Dustin Lynch’s STAY COUNTRY TOUR and will then look toward his role as a special guest on Sam Hunt’s THE SOUTHSIDE SUMMER TOUR.

To keep up with Travis Denning, you can follow him on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Florida Georgia Line joins Justin Bieber on “Yummy (Country Remix)”

Yummu

Justin Bieber teamed up with Florida Georgia Line to unleash a remix to his latest single “Yummy”. It was released last week and may have found its true home in the country charts. The collab put together an entire bop that has every intention of getting listeners to create their own dance floor, wherever they may be. Don’t be shy, show your coworkers some of your moves or start a dance-off with the Starbucks barista. We will not be responsible for any damage done.

Bieber recently joined Dan + Shay on their current single titled “10,000 Hours” and that’s been #1 on the charts for 19 weeks. With the inclusion of Florida Georgia Lines vocals and the casual dialogue between these crossroad acts to hype each other up or simply introduce a verse, it has the potential to be as successful as “Old Town Road” with Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus.

At first glance, you may not find a relationship between these tracks that could stay and govern their own planets at opposite sides of the solar system with ease. Though, to acknowledge similarities in different approaches to music, and anything for that matter, allows for there to be a deeper appreciation for them.

The one misconception with releasing new music is that it’s a done deal and cannot be tampered with anymore. In most cases, songs are complete in their initial stage and don’t need another version. Other pieces of music are only improved with different mixes, which allows for a more intimate understanding of the original. “Yummy” falls under this category.

“Yummy (Country Remix)” would be a great addition to your summer playlists that are handcrafted to encourage those shy partygoers to find themselves in the middle of a dance floor.

To keep up with Florida Georgia Line, follow them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

“Yummy (Country Remix)” is available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.
