NYCS First Impression: Montgomery Gentry ‘Outskirts’

Montgomery Gentry

Montgomery Gentry’s highly anticipated EP is out today (6/14). Outskirts feature seven songs that were recorded back in September of 2017 and is the perfect way to pay tribute and continue the legacy of Troy Gentry who lost his life just a year later in a helicopter accident.

Montgomery Gentry sing about the way you are raised and your core values when growing up on the outskirts of town. The return of the duo’s signature southern rock sound makes for a collection of tracks that fans of the band will absolutely love. Opening with the title track, “Outskirts,” which portrays the praises of living in a small town living. The lyrics explain the core values and common living patterns of living in the south.

“We stick to God’s plan / Finish what we start, man / Carve out our brand / Our here in the heartland / And on a clear night / I can see them city lights / While I watch the stars burn / Out here on the outskirts.”

Along with their own tracks, the duo also took on Merle Haggard’s “What Am I Going To Do With The Rest Of My Life,” and their take on Darrell Scott’s “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive.”

The second track on the EP “Never Been Nothin’ Else” will take you back to your roots and will remind you to stay true to yourself. Also, the track “Joe Six Pack” written by Jeremy Stover, Jesse Frasure, and Travis Denning, needs to be an addition to your summer playlist. The message is direct on this chorus as Montgomery sings “We’re good with what we got / Fine with what we have.”

At the end of the EP, “King of the World” features the GRAMMY award-winning guitar player, Steve Vai. “The way he wants to live his life when he grows up,” Montgomery says of the track in a press release. This track has a folksy, rock beat that will stand out to the fans. This EP is an unforgettable soundtrack that showcases the new direction and honors the memory of Troy Gentry.

Adam Doleac Releases Two New Songs “SOLO” & “Wake Up Beautiful”

Adam Doleac SOLO

Here at New York Country Swag, we pride ourselves on being tastemakers and championing artists in all stages of their career, but we get especially excited when one of our favorite rising artists finds mainstream success. Our 2018 Artist to Watch, Adam Doleac is doing just that!

His single “Famous” found its way to number 1 on the Sirius XM The Highway Hot 30 Countdown, and we are eagerly awaiting a full project from the singer-songwriter. Just today, he released two new songs, “Solo” and “Wake Up Beautiful” to give us another taste of what’s to come.

Both tracks are romantic and sentimental in their own right. The former, “SOLO” is Doleac’s plea to a girl to stay with him, even though it wasn’t, at first, meant to be anything serious. In the slow-burn track, the country crooner expresses his vulnerability through his vocals and the heartfelt lyrics. At his pop-up New York City show on Monday night, Doleac told the audience that SOLO stood for “Stay Over Lay Over”

“I don’t want to be solo / I don’t want to watch the sun come up alone / Nah, you ain’t gotta go home / Wait three days to talk on the phone / Just cause the night is over / Don’t mean I don’t want you next to me / I don’t want to be solo / Stay over, lay over here with me”

Adam Doleac Wake Up Beautiful

The latter, “Wake Up Beautiful” is a confident and charming love song, featuring a catchy hook and chorus. Doleac gushes over a girl, singing compliments as lyrics and explaining, “I bet you wake up beautiful.” Like his single, “Famous,” “Wake Up Beautiful” will have all the girls swooning and wishing for a partner, who puts them on a pedestal as Doleac does in his music. The singer continues to prove his staying power with two more solid tracks to add to his collection of impressive songs.

He is on the road this summer, making stops in Colorado, Arizona, California, Arkansas, and more. We caught the singer’s set earlier this week, first at Hunter Mountain’s Taste of Country Festival and again, on Monday night in New York City at his headlining show. It was great to see how much the singer-songwriter has grown as an artist since we hosted our first ever Swag Session with him back in 2017. To hear more about both new songs, watch our interview below.

Chris Young Releases Emotional New Song Titled “Drowning”

Chris Young Drowning

There are few things more powerful in music than real human emotion. When I think about the songs that have moved me the most in my life, I think about those moments where I could feel the artist’s every word and every emotion. So is the case on Chris Young’s newest release, “Drowning.”

Young premiered the song at the Grand Ole Opry last week and played it a few times during CMA Fest, revealing that the song was inspired by the passing of his best friend. For Young, the Opry performance was an emotional one, and the usually jovial singer broke down during his performance. He took to social media to share his reasons for releasing the song, writing, “Last week, I debuted my new tune “Drowning” at the @opry and broke down in the middle of it… since then so many people have shared stories of loved ones lost and how they have connected to this song. I want you guys to have this one, and make it your own, so I’m going to release it this Friday.”

The song is utterly heartbreaking due to the fact that loss is an emotion everyone can relate to. Co-written by Young, Josh Hoge, and Corey Crowder, Young admits the song was Crowder’s idea and was built off of the line “Missing you comes in waves,” which led to the chorus.

“I can’t help at all but think about it / How you were taken way too soon / It ain’t the same here without you,” Young sings, his voice deep with emotion, “I’ve gotta say, missin’ you comes in waves / And tonight I’m drowning.”

At his CMA Fest fan party, Young admitted that the song’s universal appeal was one of the most interesting things about it. “We wrote it really open ended because everybody in the room was thinking about a different person.” He also revealed that for him, the song was the first about his friend. “When he passed away, I had never really written something about it until this song and I really wanted it to be something special.”

“I know you’re in a better place/ one day I’ll see you again,” Young sings achingly. “But it’s killing me we can’t be face to face/ I miss my best friend.”

Young also revealed on Twitter that “Drowning” is one of his favorite songs on his forthcoming album, due out later this year, and it’s absolutely clear why. With his powerful voice laced with emotion, Young is at his finest on “Drowning.” The song is truly country music at its finest, and we can’t wait to watch it hit #1.

Adam Doleac Shares An Acoustic Set at an Intimate NYC Venue

Guest post by Andrea Rogers for NYCountry Swag

Adam Doleac

After playing for 20,000 fans at Taste of Country Music Festival, Adam Doleac did a pop-up show at Berlin NYC on the lower east side Monday night. He told the audience that he loved playing acoustic intimate venues that allowed for more interaction with the audience and storytelling. He allowed the crowd to control the set list and joked that he knew all his own songs if anyone wanted to request his original music. “We are hopefully able to build this thing bigger and bigger as we go and continue to do stuff like this. This is the first of many pop-up shows and it’s so cool that I only posted it yesterday and y’all came”.

He joked with the audience about experiencing NYC and riding the subway. “We normally Uber and we rode the subway. Ride the subway they said. It would be fun they said. At least we are experiencing the culture of NYC” He played originals such as “Refill”, “Shady”, and “Mom and Daddy’s Money”. He opened up about his gratitude towards his parents for all they have done for him. “The best thing you can have in the world is two good parents. That’s the best start anyone can have. I was lucky enough to have two good parents. I was spoiled by them…I wouldn’t be here without them. They treated me good…I knew I could never say thank you enough in person so this was my way of thanking them via song. It’ll be around forever, they can listen to it, and I love playing it when they are in the audience. I hope I can do it as well as they did when I have my own kids”.

He announced that his next single will be “Solo” and it will be released to Sirius XM radio next Friday. NYC got to hear him play it for the first time live. “I wrote it with a track guy in the room so I didn’t have to play it and I haven’t sung it for anyone yet. The first time playing it, it could be a good thing or a bad thing” he joked. He also shared that the initials of “SOLO” mean “Stay Over Lay Over”, a play on words similar to Florida Georgia Line’s song “H.O.L.Y.”.

He also played hits such as “Whiskey’s Fine” and he shared how that song was his start two years ago on the radio. He was named “Highway Find” artist in 2017 and was our very first Swag Session back in October of that year.  He ended the night with “Puzzle of Us”, “Bigger Than Us”, and his latest hit “Famous”. “Famous” being his first #1 song on Sirius XM The Highway’s Hot 3o Countdown. “It’s the smallest song I’ve ever written but it’s doing big things at #1 on the Highway for 2 weeks, going on 3”. The inspiration behind famous is his girlfriend. There was a night she was all dressed up and his brother described her as “looking famous” which was his muse for the song. 10 Country Songs for Days That Really Suck

Life can be messy, and sometimes a bad day feels like the absolute end of the world. Even in the worst of times, Country music is there to remind us that every low point will turn around. Here are a few of our favorite tracks to get you through the bad day blues.

1. “Every Storm” – Gary Allan

“Every storm runs, runs out of rain / Just like every dark night turns into day / Every heartache will fade away / Just like every storm runs, runs out of rain”

2. “Rainbow” – Kacey Musgraves

“When it rains it pours but you didn’t even notice / It ain’t rainin’ anymore, it’s hard to breathe when all we know is / The struggle of staying above, the rising water line / Well the sky is finally open, the rain and wind stopped blowin’ / But you’re stuck out in the same old storm again / You hold tight to your umbrella, darlin’ I’m just tryin’ to tell ya / That there’s always been a rainbow hangin’ over your head”

3. “Break on Me” – Keith Urban

“Break on me / Shatter like glass / Come apart in my hands / Take as long as it takes, girl / Break on me / Put your head on my chest / Let me help you forget / When your heart needs to break / Just break on me”

4. “So Small” – Carrie Underwood

“‘Cause sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing / Is just a grain of sand / And what you’ve been out there searching for forever / Is in your hands / And when you figure out love is all that matters after all / It sure makes everything else seem so small”

5. “Stand” – Rascal Flatts

“Cause when push comes to shove / You taste what you’re made of / You might bend till you break / ‘Cause it’s all you can take / On your knees, you look up / Decide you’ve had enough / You get mad, you get strong / Wipe your hands, shake it off / Then you stand”

6. “I’m Gonna Love You Through It” – Martina McBride

“When you’re weak, I’ll be strong / When you let go, I’ll hold on / When you need to cry, I swear / That I’ll be there to dry your eyes / When you feel lost and scared to death / Like you can’t take one more step / Just take my hand, together we can do it / I’m gonna love you through it”

7. “If You’re Going Through Hell” – Rodney Atkins

“If you’re going through Hell / Keep on going, don’t slow down / If you’re scared, don’t show it / You might get out / Before the devil even knows you’re there”

8. “Fly” – Maddie & Tae

“So keep on climbing, though the ground might shake / Just keep on reaching though the limb might break / We’ve come this far, don’t you be scared now / ‘Cause you can learn to fly on the way down”

9. “Rescue” – Hunter Hayes

“Through all the highs and lows / The can’t undo’s I regret the most / The wall so hard feels like I can’t get through / Oh, the rescue / Every morning by your side / Just one look at you sometimes / You don’t even know you’re coming to / To the rescue”

10. “Doin’ Fine” – Lauren Alaina

“I’m doin’ fine enough to know that everyone’s a little broken / Fine enough to learn that hearts are best when they’re wide open / I still got fear inside of me / I’m not okay but I’m gonna be alright / For the first time in a long time I’m doin’ fine”
