Chase Rice Brings His AM/PM Tour to Playstation Theater in NYC

Chase Rice’s AM/PM Tour stopped at the Playstation Theater in Manhattan to perform an intimate show for his New York fans. He brought along special guests and good friends, Jon Nite and Chris DeStefano.

Nite and DeStefano performed their acoustic set side-by-side. Predominately, songwriters, the two spent their 45-minute set covering songs they’ve written for other artists. Luke Bryan’s “Kick the Dust Up”, Brett Eldredge’s “Don’t Ya”, Jake Owen’s “Beachin’”, Dan + Shay’s “From the Ground Up”, Dierks Bentley’s “Living” and many more chart-topping hits were performed for the boisterous crowd Friday night.

Jon Nite Chris Destafano Chase Rice

Nite has written fourteen top ten hits for artists including Bryan, Owen, Keith Urban, Darius Rucker, Cole Swindell among others. He picked up a few CMA and ACM awards along the way. He penned Swindell’s “Break Up in the End” which was nominated for Country Song of the Year at the 2019 Grammys. Nite also earned a CMA Triple Play honor, which he received for writing three number one hits in one calendar year. The three songs were Luke Bryan’s “Strip It Down”, Keith Urban’s “Break On Me” and A Thousand Horses’ “Smoke”

DeStefano is a Grammy-winning songwriter and has written number one hits for big-name artists including Luke Bryan, Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, and Carrie Underwood. He is also the dominant writer/producer for Chase Rice’s albums. DeStefano co-wrote seven songs on Ignite the Night and three on Lambs & Lions, including his number-one single “Eyes on You”. During his set, he began playing the chords of the song, which the audience reacted positively to. “If I played that song now, Chase would kill me,” he joked.

Rice came out on stage to “Lions”, the lead track off his most recent album. He followed that with “Do it Like This”, “Jack Daniels Showed Up” and “On Tonight”. He then confessed that he’s working on a new album and wrote a song three days ago that he was going to play for the audience. “A song that’s three days old is also three days old in my mind and I don’t know all the f***king words….there’s no better place to play it then in this city.” He then performed the new, upbeat song, co-written with DeStefano, titled “The City”. Somehow, the fans knew the song as many of them in the front row were singing along with him. Listen to an acoustic version on  Instagram.

Rice’s personality and humor were showcased as he was interactive with the audience throughout the night and spoke to the fans like were his college football teammates. He was also very informative in letting the crowd know what was going on in his life and career. He explained that he considered sending another song off Lambs & Lions to radio but then ultimately decided to record a new album instead. “We’re going to slowly start putting stuff out…I don’t know how this is going to go but I do know one thing and there’s one song starting this next album and it’s this song right here.” He then performed his most recent release, “Lonely If You Are”.

Chase Rice

“I heard a quote from a guy named Harlan Howard, who was one of the best songwriters of all time, they asked him what country music was to him…and his response was pretty simple; he said ‘three chords and the truth’,” he explained that that was the inspiration behind his top-25 hit.

He gave a shout-out to Jon Nite for the next song, “Gonna Wanna Tonight” because it was in the 1% of songs he didn’t write himself. “We’ll sing it one more time on that chorus to make sure Jon hears you; as loud as you can,” he demanded of the fans. I guess we weren’t loud enough because Rice responded with: “I’m not bullshitting you, you better be f***ing loud on this chorus.”

He slowed things down with a personal song in “Carolina Can”, a track all about his life growing up in Carolina. He followed that with “Ride”. For this song, Rice brought a couple on stage and separated them by sitting the girl on a high-top, center stage and taking the guy to his bar off stage. Rice sang the romantic chorus to the girl as the boyfriend watched him try to seduce his girlfriend from the side stage. This bit got a lot of laughs from the audience.

His next song was the one he was teasing all night; his number one song, “Eyes on You”. “Cruise”, the track Rice co-wrote with Florida Georgia Line, was next. During the song, he announced his band members, who sported more of a punk-rock look than a country look. They each got to play a snippet of a song of their choice that was unplanned, according to Rice. The two guitar players chose Blink 182’s “All the Small Things” and Lit’s “My Own Worst Enemy”. The bassist began strumming the tune of “Wheels on the Bus” which the crowd loved but Rice did not. Rice made him pick another one so he played Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline”.

His epic finale got better when he rapped Nelly’s verse of “Cruise” which transitioned into “Ready Set Roll”. Before exiting the stage, Rice admitted playing Madison Square Garden is a dream of his and asked the fans to help him get there. Rice certainly has the talent, the personality and the passion for country music to make that dream a reality.

Rice’s tour is headed to his home state of North Carolina next weekend. For more dates, visit his website.

Mason Ramsey & Friends Entertains Fans in New York City

This past Thursday night, Mason Ramsey brought his rodeo to lower a Manhattan venue, Gramercy Theatre, with special guests Jenna Paulette and ERNEST. While only 12 years old, Ramsey held the room in the palm of his hand, singing a variety of originals and covers while showcasing his yodeling and dancing skills for the crowd. Penned Lil Hank Williams, he certainly lived up to his nickname.

Jenna Paulette Mason Ramsey

First up was rising Texan singer/songwriter Jenna Paulette, a long-time member of writers circle Song Suffragettes in Nashville. When the lights were dimmed, the crowd went wild as Paulette walked out, clad in a fringe skirt and cowboy hat. She opened her set with “Wild Like the West,” an upbeat song about her wild personality. When Paulette played current single “Blue Jeans”, the crowd was hooked. “This is my first time playing a show in New York City,” she said, to which the crowd cheered. She closed with hit “F-150”, and asked the crowd to send a “yeehaw” back to Mason Ramsey before leaving the stage. To learn more about the Texas native check out our Swag Spotlight from earlier this year.

Next was songwriter-turned-artist ERNEST. Performing with just his guitar, ERNEST stole the show, performing a slew of hits recorded by artists such as Morgan Wallen and Chris Lane, as well as new songs on his debut EP, Locals Only, released this past Friday, October 11th. “This is what helped me sign my first publishing deal,” he said before playing his catchy hook “Blacked Out”. He sang it another time after free-styling to the word “mullet” at a suggestion by a fan. After singing “Sugar”, a fan shouted, “Play ‘Blacked Out’ again!” He laughed and responded, “Y’all don’t wanna ruin the present now, do you? It’s coming,” And with that, he closed his set to a deafening sing-along of “Blacked Out”. His music is perfect for fans of Luke Combs and Morgan Wallen.

Mason Ramsey

When the lights flickered on and off, signaling that Mason Ramsey was about to enter the room, people started excitedly running to the front of the stage, chanting, “Mason, Mason, Mason”. He followed his band out, singing and shredding the guitar like it was nobody’s business. He opened with his original song, “The Way I See It”, and the audience knew every word. “So… I’m happy to be in New York. Tour’s fun… except for that one incident I had on my bike, I crashed,” Ramsey told the crowd, laughing and cheering. “Now we’re gonna go a little classic,” Ramsey said. “Let’s take it back with ‘Ring of Fire’ by Johnny Cash.” The crowd was thrilled to hear it, screaming the words back to him as he made his way to the front of the stage, hi-fiving fans. Following his Cash cover, he played four Hank Williams covers, which included, “Jambalaya”, “Hey Good Lookin” and “Your Cheatin Heart”.

“It’s a true story,” Ramsey laughed, telling the crowd. “My grandma needed towels at Walmart, and I decided, in this weird little aisle, like Aisle #12 or something like that, to sing a couple of songs, and then a circle started forming around me. And after that, there was this lady who said, ‘Can you sing me a special song?’ And she recorded it. And that song goes like this,” he said, nodding to the band who started up the song that started it all, Hank Williams’ “Lonesome Blues”.

Mason Ramsey

After singing an unreleased song, “Gone”, Ramsey surprised the crowd with his verse of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road”. For his two encores, Ramsey brought out ERNEST to sing “Twang” and Jenna Paulette to sing “Famous”, closing the show to the entire venue singing both songs at the top of their lungs. Ramsey, ERNEST, and Paulette all seemed to be so thrilled to be on stage together, soaking in every moment.

It’s not every day a 12-year-old embarks on a headlining tour with a stop in New York City. After success on social media, it was incredibly impressive to see how dedicated his fanbase is and how truly talented he is. This show had something for everyone – if you can, make sure to catch the HOW’S UR GIRL & HOW’S UR FAMILY PT. 2 Tour. Additional dates at www.masonramseyofficial.com

Walker Hayes Lets You In On His Home Life in the Video for “Don’t Let Her”

Walker Hayes has been on our radar forever, being apart of our Artist To Watch in 2017, many interviews, including our most recent during Taste of Country Festival (below), Swag Sessions, and even wearing our merch. His most recent release, “Don’t Let Her,” is a touching tribute to his wife, Laney. While no one wants to think about losing a spouse, Walker and Laney have. Hayes wants his wife to move on and enjoy life although never forgetting him.

Filmed by Chris Ashlee and Sean O’Halloran, it showcases Walker, Laney, and all of their kids having a shaving cream party in the bathroom, cooking bacon in the morning, folding laundry, and playing video games together. You can really see the wholeness of the Hayes family between their interactions and quality time together. The kids look up to both parents for the playful interactions and love they have for each other. The video ends with clips cutting back and forth between the couple sitting on the porch playing the guitar in rocking chairs and playing football in the driveway of the family’s Franklin, TN home.

Hayes’ team told us that “Walker wanted this to be as true to his everyday life as possible, so there is no hair and make-up, no lighting, no wardrobe, no managers or team members in the room – just two cameramen filming what the family normally does.” Hayes has shown fans that he is real, open, and honest with his songs and this video adds such a depth to that. Watch the video for “Don’t Let Her” below.

To keep up with Hayes follow him on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook and make sure to visit his “Be A Craig” fund as well.

NYCS First Impression: Bailey Bryan ‘Perspective’

Bailey Bryan EP

It’s officially Fall, the season of shifting and change. Nashville based singer/songwriter Bailey Bryan is embracing this whole-heartedly, as she celebrates the release of her sophomore EP, Perspective, out today, October 11th. “I’m trying to allow myself the space to experiment, whether it’s the sound of my music or the things I wear, to figure out who I am and how to be true to me,” Bryan shared in a recent press release.

This statement rings true on “Perspective”, as she blends her pop influences with a country sound. The EP opens up with previously-released “Songbird” which was co-written by the songstress along with songwriter turned artist Michael Hardy, along with Dennis Matkosky. The guitar compliments Bryan’s vocals perfectly as she sings, “I am just a songbird/trying to find my way”. It’s a quintessential opening track- it asks the questions the rest of the EP explores.

She follows it with “Where We Started”, a song about a relationship that is on the rails that she wants to save. It’s poppy and singer-songwriter at the same time, a seamless transition from country to a more pop-heavy sound. This song has real hit potential, as it’s relatable and catchy at the same time.

The title track “Perspective” is next, and instead of including the original single put out at the beginning of 2019, she included the demo. This song is Bryan’s mission statement, and it marks her official transition to pop music. “Now I got a new perspective/All ’cause you respected / Finally liking what I see”, she sings on the soaring chorus.

Next is the fourth song “Watered Down”, which is the standout of the 5 song EP. It’s Nashville writing at it’s finest: it’s vulnerable, authentic and memorable. “You get a lot of people telling you things like, ‘You’re great. What you do is cool.” Bryan explains. “But the way to make [this relationship] work would be to tone yourself down.”  The production is low key, but perfect for the message of the song. It’s filled with synths and balanced out with some guitar, adding to the elements of her pop/singer-songwriter identity.

The EP closes with anthemic “Pressure”. “There’s this weight on us—when you’re scrolling through social media or talking to your parents or comparing yourself to your friends—to know exactly who you are and to present yourself as if you’re having the time of your life,” Bryan explains. “[It] really sums up my last couple of years.”

Transitioning and melding one genre into a different one can be tricky for some artists. For Bryan, it was the most natural thing she could have done. Her songwriting remains honest throughout, writing each of the songs on the project and it seems that the songbird herself finally found her voice. She should be proud because this is her best work yet.

Bryan’s second EP, Perspective, is out now. Catch her on her upcoming “Perspective” limited-club tour next month. For more info and tour dates head to www.baileybryan.com

NYCS First Impression: Ernest ‘Locals Only’

Ernest

While you may not be familiar with Ernest just yet, chances are you’ve heard a song or two that he’s had a hand in writing. With cuts by Florida Georgia Line (“Dig Your Roots”), Chris Lane (“Big, Big Plans”), Jake Owen, LoCash, Mason Ramsey, and more, he’s been making a name for himself in Nashville as a songwriter. Today (October 11), he released his debut project as a Big Loud Records’ artist, a nine-track collection entitled Locals Only.

With a sound described as “tropical cowboy,” Ernest co-penned every song on the project with some of Nashville’s biggest names, including Corey Crowder, Rodney Clawson, Jordan Reynolds, and FGL’s Brian Kelly. Producers on the album include Joey Moi, Jacob Durrett, and Jordan Schmidt.

The album is an uptempo mix of groovy, feel-good tracks that are sure to have you bobbing your head from the first seconds through the closing notes. Opening with “I Think I Love You,” the first track sets the tone for the record with its hints of island mixed with clever lyrics. The vibe continues on the album’s second track, “Insane,” where Ernest sings of how a woman makes him crazy, in the best possible way.

“Sugar” is one of the album’s highlights, and would easily fit in on both country and pop radio. “Coolin’ (The Island Interlude)” takes the island vibe to a whole new level, sounding like a song that would’ve been recorded by Kenny Chesney. “Brain On Love” is a clever spin on the old adage of one having a “brain on drugs,” but here, Ernest celebrates his “brain on love,” but don’t worry, he sings. “I like it, I like it.” Other highlights include “Hard Way” and the album’s title track, “Locals Only.”

Locals Only is a solid debut release from Ernest that’s sure to carve out his niche as one of Nashville’s tropical cowboys. With catchy lyrics, laid-back melodies, and an effortless vibe, it’s only a matter of time before Ernest becomes one of music’s newest stars.

Locals Only Track Listing

NYCS First Impression: Kelleigh Bannen ‘Favorite Colors’

Kelleigh Bannen Favorite Colors

If you’re searching for a record that is emotional, raw, fierce, honest, and impactful, look no further than Kelleigh Bannen’s debut record Favorite Colors. The independent artist showcases true artistry in all of her music, but this record is all her. She throws caution to the wind, and delivers an album that is authentic to who she is as a person.

All co-written by Bannen, the record consists of fourteen well-rounded and vulnerable tracks. All reflective in nature, the songstress leans on themes of love, love lost, empowerment, and story-telling. Beginning with, “Damn I Still Love You,” the singer-songwriter reflects about running into an old flame, surprising herself with the revelation that she’s still in love. On the contrary, “Sleeping Alone” is reflective and a tad melancholy, but ultimately, it is a powerful song about being on the other side of things, overcoming the heartache.

Both “Happy Birthday” and “Time Machine” are songs that revisit the past, leaning on the nostalgia that is laced throughout the entire project. The former shows off Bannen’s vocals as she reminisces about all the birthdays she spent with her ex. She just calls to say “Happy Birthday.” The latter skews towards a more general wondering, eventually transitioning into remembering memories with an old lover. She cleverly calls songs, a “stranger’s perfume,” and landmarks- time machines that bring you back to those exact moments.

Like “Happy Birthday,” Bannen included the two other songs off her EP on this record, “John Who” and “The Joneses.” The first song is smooth, soulful, and thoughtful. It is inspired by a whirlwind romance with a man named John, who Bannen is seemingly trying to get over after he just up and leaves. She sings “I need a clean slate from this heartache / I need a reason to forget,” later adding “I need a don’t look back / Kiss that stops me in my tracks.” In “The Joneses” Bannen uses quick, impactful lyrics to describe the old age adage that there’s no point in trying to “keep up with Joneses.” Like with her music, Bannen refuses to fit in and continues to blaze her own path and create her own mold. To learn more about these songs, check out our Swag Spotlight with the singer-songwriter from earlier this year.

Four of the songs were pre-released, including “Deluxe,” “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Diamonds,” and “Faith in You.” Although all different in nature, the group of songs are all inspiring and hopeful. “Deluxe” is inspired by an extravagant type of love. She compares a man’s advances to high-end luxury in the sonically-pleasing song. “Boys Don’t Cry” is a plea to girls who are going through a break-up, not to compare themselves to how guys go through a break-up. She encourages the ladies to “pull yourself together,” and of course to “get to getting over.” Finally, both “Diamonds” and “Faith In You” pay tribute to having someone to lean on, when times get tough, describing long-term commitment as the holy grail.

Favorite Colors boasts two true-blue upbeat tunes with “Suit” and “Haters.” The songs are on the opposite side of the spectrum, when it comes to context and instrumentals; however, they are both indicative of passion and truth-telling. “Suit” is a romantic, flirty track, where Bannen daydreams about her wedding day, cheek-fully singing “I can see you in a suit and tie / I can see you at the end of an aisle.” On the other hand, “Haters” confronts the social media monsters, calling out the trolls that hide behind their technology to bring others down. Both of these songs prove that no topic is off-limits.

Finally, “Your Favorite Colors” and the closing track, “Long Shadow” may be the best of the beautiful collection of songs on this project. Both showcase her songwriting chops, projecting the brutally-honest vulnerability that is so important in great story-telling. “Your Favorite Colors” depicts the ebbs and flows of getting through heartbreak. She admits the truth that “I don’t know where love goes when it’s gone.” In the later, “Long Shadow” the singer contemplates her thoughts, ultimately realizing that the ones we loved and lost, never really leave us.

Overall Bannen’s body of work is innovative and pleasing to listen to. It’s safe to say that Bannen’s goal of “telling stories and bringing people together” has been accomplished, as her record far exceeded expectations.

To keep up with Kelleigh Bannen follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Sam Hunt is Back with Brand New Song “Kinfolks”

Sam Hunt Kinfolks

After a hiatus from the music industry, Sam Hunt is back with a brand new song, “Kinfolks”, which made it’s world premiere today (October 10th). The award-winning singer-songwriter co-wrote the new track with Zach Crowell, Jerry Flowers, and Josh Osborne and it will officially impact country radio on Monday, October 14th.

Hunt has been teasing the new music all week on social media, and sonically, “Kinfolks” channels the signature R&B infused country that he has perfected over the years with smash hits like “Body Like A Backroad”, “Ex To See” and “Leave The Night On”. The story unfolds of wanting to bring a new relationship home, maybe for the first time, and introduce them to everyone you love who has been there from the start.

“When I think of ‘kinfolks,’ when I think of that phrase,” says Hunt in a press release, “I think of my family, but also I think of my people back home – beyond family. It’s my buddies who’ve been a part of my story from the beginning. I’ve made a lot of new friends and met a lot of new people who are important to me since I’ve moved away, but that core group is still my core group. It’s like that old saying, ‘you can’t make old friends.’”

Hunt is currently in the studio finishing up his latest project which can be expected in the new year. “Kinfolks” follows a teaser of music that the multi-platinum selling premiered “Sinning With You” during his Bud Light House Party Tour in Calgary on September 19th.
