Throwback Thursday – 10 Trace Adkins Songs You May Have Forgotten

By Michal Pietrzak

Trace Adkins

Trace Adkins is a well-recognized country music figure but did you know that he lost his pinky finger on the left hand and he made doctors reattach in such matter that he could still play guitar. He’s a big guy but deep down he’s hopeless romantic as he admits in his biography. His songs range from comedic like “Marry For Money” to serious like “Arlington” or “You’re Gonna Miss This” which but the way was recorded because he wanted to sing it on his daughter’s wedding and at the end, the song became one of his greatest hits.

Recently Adkins announced his 2020 “The Way I Wanna Go” tour which starts on the 5th of March and lasts until the 21st of August. For more information go to his site www.traceadkins.com

Adkins has recorded 12 studio albums and delivered many hits like “Every Light in The House”, “Ladies Love Country Boys”, “Than They Do”, “I Got My Game On’ or “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk”. He also has dropped some amazing songs that somehow didn’t become great hits.

Before we get to the list here’s an Adkins quote from the story behind the song “I hope this is not chiseled on my headstone when I pass away but so far I haven’t recorded anything that’s drawn more attention than this one and maybe for a good reason, everyone loves honky tonk badonkadonk”

Let’s take a look at some great songs you may still have to discover.

  1. Dreamin’ Out Loud – Sometimes we lose somebody but we wish we could take them back that’s why we sometimes dream out loud.  “Well I’d better be goin’/Got someplace to be/ I know she’s somewhere in this town/ And until I find her, and she comes back to me/ I’ll be dreamin’ out loud”

  1. It Was You – It’s not about the looks, it’s about what’s inside. The beauty within is all that matters and makes you truly fall in love. “It wasn’t the stars in the sky, that got to me that night/ Or the music that we were dancin’ to/ It wasn’t the moon up above, that had me fallin’ in love/ It was more than all those things alone could do/ It was you”

  1. Every One of You – Nothing describes this song better than the first verse.  “You’re Sleeping Beauty when I wake you with a kiss / And you’re Scarlet O’Hara when your hands are on your hips / You’re Marilyn Monroe when the wind blows your dress / And you’re I Love lucy, when your hair is all a mess / You’re Thelma and Lousie when you’re behind the wheel / You’re a Paris runway model when you’re walking in high heels / And when I feel like Romeo, you’re my Juliet / Even if there’s some of you I haven’t met yet/ I love every one of you.”

  1. She’s Still There – The most heart-wrenching, emotional, and tearful Trace Adkins song. It’s about death and not being able to live a long and decent life. We are convinced this one will make you tear up. “Lord, I know I’ll never see her/ With silver in her hair/ I know she’s really gone/ But in my heart, I’d swear/ That she’s still there in Oklahoma/ And she’s still seventeen/ She’s livin’ with her Mama”

  1. Every Other Friday at Five Divorce is a huge emotional burden not only for kids but parents too. The song highlights the biggest obstacle that every divorced dad has to face. He can only see his children every other weekend. Soft and slow sounds and deep calming voice of the singer make you dive into the lyrics. It definitely makes you think. “He counts the days and then the hours / Till he can hold his babies in his arms/ And they’ll be watchin’ out the window/ When he pulls up in the drive/ On every other Friday, at five/ For forty-eight hours, they’re with him again/ But on Sunday afternoon he’s out of time/ Some folks call him a deserter, but his kids know he’ll arrive/ On every other Friday at Five”

  1. Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow – There are so many things we take for granted so every now and then we should stop and appreciate everything we have. Life is not about material goods but about the love of your parents, husband or wife, kids, friends and a sense of peace within.  “I hope, we live forever/ And that day will never, come darlin’/ I know, if it ever happens/ I couldn’t imagine, not being in your arms/ There’s so much, we take for granted in life/ So love me, baby, like we’re runnin’ out of time”

  1. Untamed  – If you feel overwhelmed by the city listen to this song and be free and be untamed. “I only want what I’ve got comin’/ I’ll take the credit and the blame/ Even when I’m bent and broken/ I pray my spirit always stays, untamed”

  1. I Learned How To Love From You The hardest lesson in life is how to learn to love somebody. Especially today, in a world of quick deliveries, news, love, and marriages, finding a soulmate is very important. True love does not only come from the heart, but it also comes from the soul. “ You loved like there never was a risk/ Shared your heart with every tender kiss/ Now I know how much I have to give/ ‘Cause I learned how to love from you”

  1. The Stubborn One Lots of people come and go in our lives but only a few will come and stay forever. Grandparents, parents and close friends are the ones that will stick with us for a little longer than a while. “You’re the stubborn one/ My great-granddaddy’s son/ The one who drank his whiskey from a coffee cup/ Time has stripped you of/ So many things you love/ But you keep fighting on/ Because you’re the stubborn one”

  1. I Can Only Love You Like a Man – From a very young age, every girl hears stories about prince charming and knights in shining armor but they’re really hard to find in real life. The main point of these stories is to find Mr right guy who will show his appreciation and dedication.  “Now Heaven knows I’m no angel/ Just flesh and bone like all the rest/ I never claimed to have a halo/ All I can give you is my best/ But I will never try to hurt you/ Or even give you cause to doubt/ That my heart is yours forever/ Ain’t that what true love’s all about”

The best thing about Trace Adkins is that he only records songs that he believes in and can sing with conviction. It makes this list a little more special, more personal.

Ryan Hurd & Niko Moon Bring the Platonic Tour to NYC

Niko Moon NYC

Last night country music fans in New York City were in for a real treat. Singer-songwriter and rising artist, Ryan Hurd brought his ‘Platonic Tour’ to Manhattan’s Gramercy Theatre featuring special guest, Niko Moon as the opener.

Tasked with warming up the crowd, Niko Moon took the stage first. The songwriter turned solo-artist is one to look out for in country music. We chatted with him before the show about the feel of his music and his excitement for playing for New York fans. Check out our Swag Session below. Moon sang several songs, giving fans a taste of his own music, as well as, songs he has written for other artists, namely Rascal Flatts and Zac Brown Band.

The singer sang his own songs like “GOOD AT LOVING YOU” and “PARADISE TO ME.” Highlights of his set included the medley of songs he wrote for Zac Brown Band, including “Keep Me In Mind,” as well as the song he wrote with Shay Mooney from Dan + Shay for Rascal Flatts, “Back To Life.” According to Moon though, getting to sing “Homegrown,” a song he wrote for ZBB was one of his favorites to share with the crowd.

Of course, Moon had to end his set with his first song going to country radio in two weeks, entitled “GOOD TIME.” The singer got the crowd pumped to groove along to the soon to be smash. “It’s a simple song guys, life is short you feel me, life is short,” adding, “Let’s get this shit going! Good time!” It’s safe to say that he garnered many NYC fans, during his incredible opening set.

The man of the night, Ryan Hurd took the stage next, immediately singing three of his groovy and vibe-filled songs to the crowd, including “Platonic,” “Her Name Was Summer,” and “City Girl.” Before singing his love song, written for wife, Maren Morris, “Diamonds Or Twine,” the singer-songwriter thanks fans for showing up tonight and shared some personal details with fans.

Ryan Hurd NYC

“New York City, night one, how we feeling?! Well, my name is Ryan if we never met before. Thank you so much for coming to our show tonight […] Seeing you all tonight is making me really happy.” In the wake of the tornado in Nashville, Hurd admitted to feeling really tired, but once again, thanked fans and his city for their unwavering support. “I’m really proud of my town for coming together, Nashville Tennessee. Sometimes it’s hard to be away from home when something bad happens, but you guys are giving me life tonight,” he said, as fans erupted into cheers.

Hurd went on to sing a cover of Taylor Swift’s “False God,” as well as some of his other songs, including, “Florida With a Girl” and “Panorama.” Of course, when he got to the middle of his set and sang “Hold You Back,” fans surprised Hurd by singing back all the words to the song as loud as they could. Hurd called the praise, “a really special moment in time,” and thanked fans again for their support.

Continuing the momentum, Hurd reminded fans that he started as a songwriter, writing songs for other artists across different genres. Fans went crazy as Hurd and his band gave their rendition of “Heartless,” cut by Diplo and Morgan Wallen and Lady Antebellum’s number one single, “What If I Never Get Over You,” another song penned by the singer.

“I love living in Nashville. I love writing country music. I wrote this song and I never thought anyone would really hear it and believe it was special,” adding, “I think country music is cool because we write universal feelings that each one of us has felt before,” he declared, just before mesmerizing fans with the Lady A single.

Hurd ended his eclectic and fascinating set with arguably some of his most successful songs, including “To a T, “Michigan for the Winter,” and a number one song he penned for Luke Bryan, “Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset.” The singer returned to the stage for one final encore song, but first had to address the fans one last time. “I’m really thankful to be here with you tonight,” he said, “Please be nice to each other. This is my prayer for you tonight as you leave.” Hurd ended the night with his beautiful song, “Wish for the World.”

Hurd and Moon will return to New York City tonight to play for another sold-out crowd. We are excited to see what’s next for both artists, as we know big things are on the horizon for both talents!

NYCS Texas Artist Spotlight: Cody Jinks

By Briana Lopez

Cody Jinks

Cody Jinks is known as the biggest independent Texas Country artist there currently is. Jinks was born in a city outside of Fort Worth, Texas called Haltom City. At the age of sixteen, he learned some guitar from his father which soon resulted in Jinks forming a heavy metal band. Jinks was influenced in his early years by Metallica and Pantera. In 2002 the band Jinks had formed Unchecked Aggression had release an album and later broke up. Around 2005 is when Jinks made the transition to country music leading him to where he is now.

Jinks and his band the Tone Deaf Hippies began releasing music to the country scene in 2008. In 2010 the band released the album Less Wise which was later modified, reissued and re-released again in 2017. The album was popular for the song “Hippies & Cowboys” which has now become a crowd favorite. In 2015, Jinks released another album Adobe Sessions which is when “Mamma Song” another crowd-pleaser was released.  In 2016 and in 2019 he released the albums I’m Not the Devil, After the Fire and The Wanting. But the album that brought the most attention to his artistry was the 2018 album The Lifers that the song “Must Be the Whiskey” was on.

Most recently he released a new single “Ain’t a Train” in October of 2019. The song has a mixture of traditional country, folk, and rock influence behind it which he has become known for.

If you are looking for a more traditional rooted artist that has a modern Johnny Cash vibe then Cody Jinks is the artist for you.

Jinks is currently on tour right now and may be coming to a city near you. For tickets and more info click here.

#WeTheFANS: The Traditional vs. Modern Country Music Debate

Luke Combs

We believe that the country music genre has the best fans in the world. Being a New York based outlet, we love representing all things country music in the big apple, but last week, we asked YOU, the fans, one of the most controversial topics that plague the genre: Which do you prefer, traditional country music or modern country music?

The answers may surprise you. Here’s what we learned:

1. Traditional country music is the root of country music.
We love this take on why a fan would prefer traditional country music over more modern country music. Even though they’re both good in their own right, according to Colleen B., you can’t have modern country music without the traditional stuff, and we could not agree more! Shanna V. also voiced her appreciation for the traditional side of country, sharing that it has her heart. Dina N. adds that “there’s nothing like traditional, songs that told a story!”

2. You can love both traditional country music and modern country music.
The majority of our followers could not choose between the two, and we totally understand why! For Margaret W., as long as the artist has that southern drawl in their voice, then she is sold, regardless of the type of country music they perform. She likes everyone from Glen Campbell to Maren Morris and Luke Combs! For Kelly S., she appreciates that country has “gone through so many changes in the last 100 years,” and can find good music in the genre in every decade!

3. Fans can prefer sub-genres of modern country music.
Fans surprised us by getting even more specific about their favorite type of country music. Jeff D. shared that Texas country music is his favorite, identifying artists such as Cody Johnson, Aaron Watson, and Kevin Fowler as some of his favorites. Tiffany E. shared that she enjoys underground country artists, which seem to be up and coming rising artists in the industry like HARDY, Jon Langston, and Meg Patrick. George L. added that artists like Brandi Carlile and Ashley McBryde in the outlaw country and Americana sub-genre are his jam.

4. There’s enough room for all types of country fans.
Most importantly, posing this question to our fans solidified what we already knew, there’s enough room for all types of country fans. Good music is good music, regardless of what it sounds like or what label we put on it. I hope we continue to live in a society, where music can be fluid, and we can be fans of both traditional country music, modern country music, and everything in between.

Keep on the look-out for our next question this week on our social media platforms, and let us know what you think! You just might be featured in our next post!

15 Country Songs to Help Deal with Anxiety

Little Big Town Anxiety

It may be seasonal, or it may be taking over your life; anxiety is something that so many struggle with. There are a lot of ways you can manage your anxiety, and one thing that can help is listening to music. According to DJ Mag,  listening to music can reduce one’s anxiety by 65%. Below are some country/folk songs that are sure to center you.

  1. “To a T (stripped)” – Ryan Hurd

There is something so calming about this stripped piano and string arrangement. It instantly helps slow your breathing down. “Lay back and let go/You don’t even have to say anything,” Hurd sings on the second verse, relaying the message that you will be okay. The song feels like a perfect, relaxing autumn day.

  1. “Slow Burn” – Kacey Musgraves

Kacey Musgraves is the queen of writing about anxiety and feeling overwhelmed. “Slow Burn”, however, is about letting go and letting your senses fill you up. On the chorus, she sings, “I’m gonna do it my way, it’ll be alright/If we burn it down and it takes all night/It’s a slow burn”. There’s something magical about the layers of vocal harmonies that make you sink in.

  1. “1000 Graves” – Ruston Kelly

Ruston Kelly airs on the more acoustic side of country/singer-songwriter music, and his song “1000 Graves” off his debut EP Halloween has minimalistic production that is easy to focus on. It’s a lonely song at first. But it ends on a hopeful note. “Cause I believe that love can save you/When it comes in quiet, it rises slow/Takes the depths out of the darkness/So you don’t have to fall that far alone/So you don’t have to face it on your own”.

  1. “Castaway” – Brett Eldredge

The final track on Brett Eldredge’s self-titled record is the reflective “Castaway”. It’s a song where he is fighting with himself. “I tried to fly but I ran out of sky, and I fell straight down into the ocean”. It’s a soul-searching song, and one many can relate to.

  1. “This Love” – Taylor Swift

“This Love” by Taylor Swift sounds like being by the ocean, listening to the waves crashing, counting your breaths by the number of seconds it takes for another wave. It’s meditative and in general just a very calming song.

  1. “Front Porch” – Joy Williams

There’s something particularly welcoming about this song. It feels like someone offering you a hand when times are tough. “The light is on, what are you waiting on/Come on back to the front porch”, Williams sings on the chorus. Her voice is incredibly soothing on this track.

  1. “Out of the Woods” – Nickel Creek

Nickel Creek’s guitar-and-fiddle leading song “Out of the Woods” is a beautiful, pacifying song that is about hoping your loved one escapes the internal crisis they are facing. “I wish you out of the woods, and into the picture with me”. It’s peaceful and harmonic, the perfect song to listen to in times of stress.

  1. “It Ain’t Yours To Throw Away” – Sam Palladio, Nashville Cast

On the fictional ABC drama Nashville, character Scarlett dealt with anxiety, panic attacks, and mental health problems. Her love interest, Gunnar, wrote the song, “It Ain’t Yours To Throw Away” to help Scarlett cope. “What if you’re just a vessel/And God gave you something special/It ain’t yours to throw away”. It’s a very acoustic song, and the lyrics are really thoughtful.

  1. “The Party” – Jill Andrews

Despite “The Party” airing more on the side of hopeless, there’s something about it that feels hopeful. Andrews sings about feeling lost as a new mom, but it’s a very universal message. The production is what makes the song so tranquilizing; the guitar and kick-drum is dreamy and allows you to let go.

  1.  “Rain” – Patty Griffin

Patty Griffin’s song “Rain” is a pleading song about trying to wait out a metaphorical storm. “I’m holding on underneath this shroud”, she sings on the chorus, pleading with herself and the love interest in the song. It’s evocative lyrically, but also because of Griffin’s vocal performance. So many can relate to this message.

  1. “You Can Close Your Eyes” – James Taylor

James Taylor’s “You Can Close Your Eyes” is written and sung like a lullaby, and sometimes that’s the most comforting thing to hear. “So close your eyes/You can close your eyes, it’s all right”. Taylor’s voice is inviting and warm, and the song makes you feel safe and at ease.

  1. “I Don’t Want to Be Scared (Live in the Garden)” – Tyler Hilton

The peaceful guitar allows the words to really shine through Tyler Hilton’s “I Don’t Want to Be Scared”. “I don’t want to be scared/Like I was before/I don’t want to be hurt by it anymore”. He sings in a way that’s self-assured, and by his own admission, he knows he can get through.

  1. “Orange Sky” – Alexi Murdoch

No song is more serene than Alexi Murdoch’s “Orange Sky”. It’s a song that is straight poetry. “In your love, my salvation lies in your love”. It’s so vivid with imagery, and the vocals are so effortless and soothing.

  1. “Bluebird” – Little Big Town

Little Big Town’s “Bluebird” sounds exactly like the light at the end of a tunnel. It’s hopeful, and it feels like finding quiet within all the chaos and noise. “Nothing’s gonna take my love away/Keep it in your heart for a rainy day/Close your eyes let it find its way to you”, the band sings in harmony. It’s the type of song that instantly puts you into a better headspace.

  1. “While You Still Can” – Brothers Osborne

The gentle song off Brothers Osborne’s last LP is not only soothing with its glittering guitars, but it’s the perfect life reminder. Life is short, and you should “take life by the hand, while you still can”.

All of these songs will help you one way or another with your anxiety. It’s one of the hardest things we have to deal with as humans, but music can help you get through it.

The Dixie Chicks Are BACK with “Gaslighter”

Gaslighter Dixie Chicks

If you’re anything like us, you grew up listening to three sassy women on your radio airwaves. Fourteen years later, the Dixie Chicks are finally back, and ready to give fans new music. Just today, the talented ladies released the title track to their forthcoming studio album, Gaslighter.

The new song comes with a powerful message or definition of what the title actually means. According to the ladies, a ‘gaslighter’ is “a psychological manipulator who seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a group, making them question their own memory, perception or sanity.” The word itself is a not so subtle message about what the ladies have endured as products of their environment back in the heyday; however, the song is something special.

“Gaslighter / Denier / Doing anything to get your ass farther / Gaslighter / Big timer / Repeating all of the mistakes of your father / We moved to California and we followed your dreams / I believed in the promises that you made to me / Swore that night ‘til death do us part / But you lie-lie-lie-lie-lied”

“Gaslighter” highlights all the incredible things women have accomplished over decades and decades, featuring clips in their video of old school black and white images and women in the service. The Dixie Chicks created a video and a song that is completely relevant to the times, all while being strong and independent women. The supergroup is sticking it to the man!

The Dixie Chicks were popular in a time in society, where having a voice, other than a singing voice, was not acceptable in country music. Talking about taboo subjects and using your platform for social justice or to promote causes you care about was not the norm. Now, over a decade later, the talented trio is joining the new wave of country musicians and strong females in the industry and leaving no stone unturned.

For updates about the new album, head to www.dixiechicks.com

“Gaslighter” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music playlist’.

Filmore Is Over “Blue Skies” In His Latest Breakup Tune

Filmore Blue Skies

One of the artists we are most excited about this year, Filmore, keeps absolutely crushing it with each and every new release. The talented newcomer has taken the country world by storm, winning over fan after fan with his undeniable charm, stage presence, and catchy, but fresh singles. Most recently, the singer-songwriter premiered arguably his most vulnerable cut to date entitled “Blue Skies.”

Although we fell in love with Filmore’s talent because of his high-energy set at the Lauren Alaina concert last month, getting to hear the singer’s softer side is equally as enticing. “Blue Skies” is the singer’s take on a break-up song. Keeping with his notable swagger, he sings about not wanting to leave the house because of the heartbreak. Moreover, he admits that dealing with a break-up in the sunshine, “blue skies” is even more difficult.

“So I just stay in, avoid my friends / Wait around ’til the clouds roll in / This heartbreak’s worse when it’s nice outside / Damn I hate summertime / I’m so tired of blue skies / Nothing to hide that goodbye / It hurts a little more in the sunshine”

Despite the melancholy nature of the lyrics, Filmore somehow manages to deliver an absolute anthem for heartbreak and break-ups. The song is relatable, but better yet, the rising artist makes you want to sing the lyrics at the top of your lungs, while your hiding in your bed, waiting for the sunshine to disappear. Kudos to Filmore for continuing to show fans exactly who he is and keeping his artistry consistent, endearing, and authentic.

“Slow Down” Lyrics

Lost in the buzz of a busy street, I never saw the leaves fall

Coffee to wake, it’s to minus sleep
But I don’t feel it at all
You’re like the wind rollin’ in on a summer blaze
Lazy river in the rapids I race
Just a minute layin’ next to you and time stands still
You make want to slow down

Baby, make it easy
I’ll take the long way around
Just as long as you’re with me
In a city full of neon burnin’ too bright,
Baby you’re my yellow light,
You make me want to slow down
You make me want to slow down
You make me want to slow down

We’ll take a walk after midnight, stay in bed until noon
Driving the curves of the coastline
And trace every inch of you
I like the rush when it’s us on a getaway
Soak it up, take it in at our pace
You know how to make my heart beat fast
And time stand still

You make want to slow down
Baby, make it easy
I’ll take the long way around
Just as long as you’re with me
In a city full of neon burnin’ too bright,
Baby you’re my yellow light,
You make me want to slow down
You make me want to slow down
You make me want to slow down
You make want to slow down

Baby, make it easy
I’ll take the long way around
Just as long as you’re with me
In a city full of neon burnin’ too bright,
Baby you’re my yellow light,
You make me want to slow down
You make me want to slow down
You make me want to slow down
