APRIL PICKS:

Stephanie Wagner, Founder

Pick: “Be A Light” – Thomas Rhett feat. Reba, Hillary Scott, Chris Tomlin & Keith Urban
Songwriters: Josh Miller, Josh Thompson, Matt Dragstrem, Thomas Rhett

This month, I’m listening to Thomas Rhett’s “Be A Light” with Reba, Hillary Scott, Chris Tomlin, and Keith Urban. Often times I feel lucky to be a country music fan and a part of the country music industry in general, but in times of turmoil, my pride for the country music world only grows stronger. In the past month, as the world struggles with our new reality surrounding COVID-19, country music stars have worked relentlessly to continue to push positivity forward. “Be A Light” is a strong example of this. Surprising fans with the release of the song, Rhett and friends remind others that through times of darkness, we can all do our part to help by being a light. It’s a song of hope, encouragement, and leaves a feeling of togetherness that the world needs right now. I’ve been listening to it daily and have enjoyed the reminders and positive vibes the song leaves.

Christina Bosch, Managing Editor

Pick: “Water in his Wine Glass” – Maddie & Tae
Songwriters: Jimmy Robbins, Jon Nite, Maddie Marlow, Taylor Dye

One facet of my life that I have been leaning on intensely during this pandemic is my faith and when I first heard this track from Maddie & Tae’s sophomore album, The Way It Feels, I stopped what I was doing, closed my eyes and just listened. The intricate details in the lyrics that act as a quiet prayer pull you in and curate feelings of sympathy for those who have dealt with addiction.

Wishing things could be different, lamenting alcohol and what it can do to a person, this track is so raw and real. “I don’t wanna lose him / Oh, but he’s already lost / And the only one who can find him is looking down here from a cross”  they sing in angelic harmony. “I’m on my knees and all I ask / Is Lord, pour water in his wine glass”

This perspective can be taken by so many who have coped with the disease of alcoholism and while an ask for help, it can also be a cornerstone for those who believe.

Pick: “Brave” – Ruston Kelly
Songwriters: Ruston Kelly

The last few months have been some of the most life-changing of my life, and music has been what’s gotten me and so many others through. When I heard Ruston Kelly’s new single, “Brave”, I was instantly stunned, as I am when I hear most of his songs. I love it when songs are stripped to their core because the story stands out amongst everything else. While the lyrics are specific to his life and his journey, it’s easy to place yourself in the track. It’s achingly relatable. Kelly is truly a poet, and his words say things that so many want to say but can’t. “And I didn’t give up to the darkness/I fought with all my might/And I never took for granted/All the love in my life.” Spring has just started, and this is the perfect reflection of the changing season and the changing times.

Dylan Bestler, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Young Once” – Sam Hunt
Songwriters: Josh Osborne, Matt Jenkins, Sam Hunt, Zach Crowell

I love everything about this album, so it was hard to pick just one song. I’ve been singing the chorus of “Young Once” over and over again in my head because it’s so catchy and brings me back to a time when nothing really mattered and I could just focus on having fun and trying not to get in trouble. Country music in general is really good at putting you back in that mindset.

Two lines in this song that stand out to me are “Time goes by and it’ll dull the razor” and “Someday we’re gonna know too much to know it all.” Both are cool ways of saying ‘let’s enjoy being young and naive now because we won’t have opportunities like this when we’re older.’ The first is a sadder way of saying it and the second makes me laugh, as it reminds me of times when I’d get in trouble and argue with my parents because I thought I was the smartest person in the world.

I loved my childhood and songs like these help me re-live moments from it in my head.

Kristina Callahan, Contributing Writer

Pick: “overshare” – Kelsea Ballerini
Songwriters: Kelsea Ballerini, Jesse Frasure, Josh Osborne, Tayla Parx

Kelsea Ballerini is one of the best at writing relatable and raw songs and “overshare” is a perfect example. It’s the first song on her third studio album, kelsea, and it’s extremely personable about how she gets nervous in situations and tends to talk and in the process, embarrass herself at times.

“I overshare, because I over-care // ’bout the person over there, who’s completely unaware that // I overthink, then I overdrink to overcompensate // Yeah, I know, there’s moments that I’m missin’ // If I’d just shut up and listen // But silence makes me scared // So then I overshare”

Ballerini’s writing is so honest and as a listener, you see yourself in her songs. Her whole album rings true to that and that’s why I can’t stop listening.

Jeremy Chua, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Getting Good” – Lauren Alaina
Songwriters: Emily Weisband

Lauren Alaina’s current radio single and invitation to live in the moment cannot be any more apt. In a time where many of us are forced out of our comfort zone by circumstances beyond our control, “Getting Good” brings encouragement to the weary heart. Covering relatable themes of love, life, material wealth, loss and contentment, Alaina reminds us that pursuing of wants is OK, but they should co-exist with this simple motto: “Once I learn to grow right where I’m planted, maybe that’s when life starts getting good.” If your life has also been a roller-coaster ridden with doubt and uncertainty, go check this song out. I’m almost certain it’ll speak to you and provide some comfort to the heart. After all, isn’t that what country music does?

Erin Crosby, Contributing Writer

Pick: “2016” – Sam Hunt
Songwriters: Josh Thompson, Zach Crowell, Sam Hunt

Southside, Sam Hunt’s second studio album, opens with an authentic approach that deals with taking responsibility and holding yourself accountable for former mistakes. This track, titled “2016”, sets the stage to showcase the singer-songwriter inside of Hunt. The stripped-down production holds the type of emotion that speaks to the listener; the one where less is not more.

“And I’d drive a thousand miles to your house / Walk in like I walked out / Put the tears back in your eyes / ‘Cause all my lies could still come true / I’d tell you everything was alright / And hold you, baby, all night / When your heart was all patched up / And our love was good as new / I’d take 2016 / And give it back to you”

In fact, in July of 2018, when this bad-boy country singer sat down in front of a piano for “Make You Miss Me” on the Atlantic City BeachFest stage, it wasn’t hard to admit how gifted of an entertainer Hunt truly is. The performance was done very intimate: just him and the keys. It portrayed the musician.

“2016” does the same. After each listen, the emotion doesn’t soften.

Alexa Ebner, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Bad Advice” – Ingrid Andress
Songwriters: Derrick Southerland, Ingrid Andress, Jamie Moore

So far, I’ve loved every song that Ingrid Andress has released – her debut album, Lady Like is captivating. One of my favorites on the album is the playful, yet sorrowful opening track, “Bad Advice”.  The production is unique and fresh to listen to, most notably with the tropical and soothing extended introduction.

The lyrics are casual, raw, and super relatable! In the very first line the songwriter sings, “I drove / down to Trader Joe’s / straight to aisle 5 / got a bottle of Merlot”. She mixes it up with several ‘talking’ verses that lead us straight into the catchy chorus, which features the juxtaposition of fun-loving lyrics and pure emotional desperation. You can hear the conviction come through Andress’ voice throughout the song, making this one so special.

Julia Grubbs, Contributing Writer

Pick: “I Kept The Roses” – Tenille Townes
Songwriters: Chris Gelbuda, Dustin Christiansen, Tenille Townes

It’s one thing to be alone during this time, but for anyone going through a breakup, this song hits right to the heart. Tenille has been my number one lately, and this song doesn’t disappoint. It might be a breakup song, and you can tell it truly hurt, but rather than being resentful or pitying herself, she’s found the seed for growth. She realizes that to have loved and lost is better than to have never loved at all and that she realizes that love is still possible, even though she’s dealing with a broken heart. It reminds us all that no matter how low we might feel, we can always grow and learn something, and be so grateful for the journey.
“And they should make me lonely / But I’m smiling instead / Oh, ’cause you weren’t the one, babe / But you were the closest”

Molly Holmberg, Contributing Writer

Pick: “This Woman and This Man” – Clay Walker
Songwriters: Jeff Penning, Michael Lunn

Ever since COVID-19 hit I have decided to move home for a few weeks to spend more time with my family since school is all online. One thing I have missed is listening to old, classic country with my dad. The song that I, shamefully, forgot existed is Clay Walker’s “This Woman and This Man”. The song, well it’s a heartbreaker. The singer confronts his partner sharing his feelings that he beforehand was unable to explain. This hypothetical situation he is singing about attempts to get the woman to see it is their relationship as they drift apart. The lyrics in the song are masterfully crafted and it is songs like these that make me fall in love with classic country all over again.

Nicole Piering, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Be A Light” – Thomas Rhett feat. Reba, Hillary Scott, Chris Tomlin & Keith Urban
Songwriters: Josh Miller, Josh Thompson, Matt Dragstrem, Thomas Rhett

In these crazy times, most of us use music to escape. For this reason, I’m picking Thomas Rhett’s “Be a Light” as my April pick. On the track, Rhett enlists some famous friends including Reba McEntire, Hillary Scott, Chris Tomlin, and Keith Urban to spread his message of doing what’s right and being a light in the darkness. “Don’t hide in the dark, you were born to shine,” They sing. “In a world full of hate, be a light.” It’s a message we could all use right now, and the combination of these five distinct, yet familiar voices, make the song all the more special.

Michal Pietrzak, Contributing Writer

Pick: “That’s Everything” – Matt Kennon
Songwriters: Aaron Scherz, Adam Browder

Matt Kennon “That’s Everything” – This song is my an early contender to become The Most Beautiful Country Songs of 2020. Calm, slow tunes and compelling lyrics are my cup of tea. The song is about little things in life that matter the most. How a pinch of love and a message on a mirror can change your day in a positive way. Matt Kennon’s raspy voice makes this song a gem, at least, for me. “Listening to her even though I don’t have a thing to say/ Making sure she knows she’s the best part of my day/ A random outta nowhere just because I can steal her kiss/ I’ve burnt a couple of dinners trying to give her all that I get/ It don’t seem like much/ But a little bit of love doing what it does/ It’s more than enough”.

Rebekah Milsted, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Humble and Kind” – Tim McGraw
Songwriters: Lori McKenna

My April pick is Humble and Kind by Tim McGraw. This song was always special to me, I even have a sign hanging up in my living room. But now during these weird times, the lyrics mean more than ever. While we may not like being able to live our normal routine, we have to remember that we are all in this together. Be nice to those around you, especially those essential employees who are putting themselves in danger to make sure we have everything that we need.

Pick: “Both” – Ingrid Andress
Songwriters: Derrick Southerland, Ingrid Andress, Jordan Schmidt

Andress exploded onto the country music scene with “More Hearts Than Mine” earlier this year, but one of my favorites off her new album is a track titled “Both”. We’ve all had someone who wants to have their cake and eat it too when it comes to love (or maybe we’ve been that person) – getting close enough to reap the benefits of a relationship but not close enough to fully commit. It can be infuriating when the other person is half in, half out, especially when you just want to know where you stand. Andress’ chilling vocals on this song and the poignant lyrics around the topic are sure to give you all the feels.

“You can tell me to stay / You can push me away / Have space or get close / But you can’t do both / You can kiss me goodnight / Or kiss me goodbye / Baby, love me or don’t / But you can’t do, you can’t do both”

Erica Zisman, Contributing Writer

Pick: “thank you anxiety” – Avenue Beat
Songwriters: Sam Backoff, Sami Bearden, Savana Santos, Summer Overstreet

This month I chose to highlight Avenue Beat’s brand new song “thank you anxiety.” First and foremost, if you have not yet heard of Avenue Beat, stop what you’re doing, and go listen to them. They are a trio of extremely talented ladies, who not only can sing but have swagger for days and killer lyrics. This particular song is extremely relatable for me, and I am sure many others out there.

Typically anxiety is not something discussed in a country song, but the group does it in such a way that rids it of its taboo, while maintaining a necessary level of sass, maturity, and sarcasm. The songstresses deliver a song that is especially relevant in today’s climate. Their honesty and openness to discuss something so personal, yet important is refreshing. I appreciate their ability to ‘go there’ with their music, and I look forward to more inspiring songs by the girls!

Lady Antebellum Release “Champagne Night” from NBC’s Songland

Champagne Night

At a time when most TV shows are on hiatus, the return on NBC’s hit show, Songland was a welcome change, especially for music lovers. The reality series, which had a successful season one last year, gives songwriters the chance to pitch songs directly to a guest artist. After a workshop period in which each songwriter teams up with one of the show’s three legendary producers, Ryan Tedder, Shane McAnally, and Ester Dean, the guest artist chooses which song they want to record and release.

Songland, which features artists from all genres, kicked off season two with country trio Lady Antebellum. The Grammy-winning group was presented with four songs and in the end, chose an upbeat track called, “Champagne Night”. The song was written by Madeline Merlo with the help of mentor and producer McAnally and Lady A group members, Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley, and Dave Haywood.

Lady Antebellum released the song and accompanying music video after the show’s broadcast. Given the fast tempo, summer feel and funky vibes, “Champagne Night” is sure to be a crowd favorite next time the trio hits the road.

“Raise them plastic cups to a life of luxury c’est la vie on a Friday / We get dressed up in a blue jean tux and we go where we don’t hear the highway / Don’t need doubles and bubbles to get in all kinds of trouble out in the country / Don’t need a crystal chandelier to have a real good time / We’re drinking beer on a champagne night”

Previous country stars featured on Songland include Kelsea Ballerini and Old Dominion. Florida Georgia Line and Martina McBride are set to appear later in season two.

To keep up with Lady Antebellum, follow them on  TwitterInstagram, and Facebook.

“Champagne Night” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

If You Like John Mayer, Then You’ll Love…

John Mayer is one of the few musical artists that most people seem to love. And there’s a reason. He is one of the smartest songwriters, he has an effortless voice and is perhaps, the most influential guitar player of this generation’s wave of musicians. It’s hard to put his music into a genre; he combines the best parts of pop, rock, jam-band, singer-songwriter, and folk-country to create his signature sound. He tells his stories through introspective lyrics and hooky melodies, which is exactly what makes country music special. This season is the perfect time to discover new music, so if you are a fan of John Mayer but aren’t too familiar with country, NYCS has some recommendations for you!

Devin Dawson

The self-proclaimed “dark horse” of country music has one of the most unique sounds in Nashville. He’s a little bit brooding but a whole lot of heart, similar to Mayer. Both have the same slick, easy-going voice that makes every song listenable and individuality as people to make their songwriting stand out. Despite both having moodier aesthetics, they both bring so much excitement to their sound. Dawson is the perfect mix of old school country and current indie, and new fans should check out “Secondhand Hurt” and debut single “All On Me”, both off his album Dark Horse.

To keep up with Devin Dawson follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Josh Kerr

Music City’s best-kept secret is the array of talented songwriters and producers. They are the people behind many of your favorite songs, and there’s a chance you didn’t even know it. Josh Kerr is one of them, garnering hits from stars like Camila Cabello, Kelsea Ballerini, and Keith Urban. He released his debut project late last year, and his soft-spoken voice and intense lyrics and cinematic production are perfect for fans of John Mayer. Highlights from his album How Do You Remember Me are “If I’m Being Honest” and “Love Me Now”.

To keep up with Josh Kerr, follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Lindsay Ell

Last but certainly not least on this list is the woman who covered John Mayer’s Continuum front to back. Lindsay Ell is one of the industry’s brightest new artists. She can write, she can sing, and, like Mayer, is one of the best guitar players of this generation. Every song of hers is great already because of their shared passion for a mix of vulnerable writing and fun hook, but her guitar and added production skills take every song to the next level. Songs you need to listen to by Ell are “White Noise” and current single, “I Don’t Love You”.

To keep up with Lindsay Ell, follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Lee Brice Brings Light To Dark Times With Surprise New Song “Hey World”

Hey World

Mega-hitmaker Lee Brice appeared on Fox & Friends for a live living room performance – initially to promote his single and accompanying music video for “One of Them Girls” last week. We’re shown a sneak peek of the music video that shines a light on first responders, while the singer shares that the song depicts “the kind of girl all the boys are looking for at heart”.

During the segment, Brice opens up about how he’s kept busy during the quarantine – with finding new ways to connect with fans and working on his record. Most importantly, he’s appreciated having “true connected family time with [his] kids” who are “bouncing off the walls”.

In the midst of opening up about how his life has been affected by the COVID-19 world health crisis, the songwriter reveals a more fitting plan for how he hoped to touch his audience at that moment. He explains that instead of playing his new single, he felt inspired to play a song that he wrote a couple days prior with some friends. Watch here.

In light of the tough times that we’re living in, Brice, along with Dallas Davidson and Adam Wood, wrote a song titled “Hey World”. The beautiful piano ballad captures the essence of how we’re all feeling during the global pandemic while diving deep emotionally.

The song opens with the powerful and gut-wrenching lyrics that immediately resonate with fans around the world.

“Hey world, leave me alone / I don’t want to turn on the TV, ain’t nothing but bad news on”

The country star continues to sing from the heart, infusing his quintessential country twangs passionately throughout the lyrics.

“Hey world, I just need some space / Could you give me a minute, to catch my breath today”

The simple piano melody provides comfort, while the song encapsulates the feeling of wanting to escape from what is happening and pretend that it isn’t real. The repetition of the line “Hey world, leave me alone” transports the listener into a mental place of peace and comfort.

Brice and his fellow songwriters put deep feelings into words, in order to help those at home find solace in these tough times. This song embodies the power of music and lyrics, which has the ability to connect an artist with its audience, as we are all navigating this unimaginable time together.

So yeah, I was completely surprised.”

Brad Paisley Celebrates The Nation’s Unity In “No I In Beer”

No I In Beer

“We’re all in this together and there’s always next year / I’m liking all this team effort
There ain’t no I in BEER”

Grab a drink and virtual cheers your buddies because Brad Paisley has just released an anthem for these quarantine times. “No I In Beer” is the perfect song to celebrate how the world has united against COVID-19 and how we can all appreciate the little victories and our essential frontline workers.

“We’re all in this together / to me it’s all so clear drinking oughta be a team effort / there is no I in beer”

Laced with epic guitar licks and Paisley’s cheeky delivery, the track written by Brad Paisley and Kelley Lovelace, will for sure be one of the bright spots of this time and a reminder that we all came through it stronger. “No I In Beer” will definitely be a staple in Paisley’s live shows and we look forward to hearing it and raising a beer with fellow concert-goers.

NYCountry Swag – Stories Behind the Greats: Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash

Country music is a genre that has a wide variety of singers and songwriters, and everything in between. With so much new talent in the industry, it is hard to forget the people that have made the genre what it is today. In all our interviews with artists, one thing has been consistent across the board, the influence that old-school artists have had on their musical journey. Johnny Cash is one of those artists who has transcended generations and continues to influence singers and songwriters today.

Although renowned as a platinum-selling singer-songwriter, Cash was also a military veteran. He served four years in the United States Air Force, where he worked as a Morse Code Intercept Operator, mostly intercepting Soviet Army transmissions. Interestingly enough, the singer was the first person to report on Society Union dictator, Joseph Stalin’s death.

During his time stationed in Germany, as many of us do during hard times, Cash turned to music as a way to escape. He bought his first guitar for $5 at a local pawn shop and created his first band while in the military. The band was called ‘The Landsberg Barbarians.’ He would write and record songs with a tape recorder and even played at local bars and other venues with his three-man band.

In 1954, Cash was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant, and he subsequently moved to Memphis, Tennessee where he was staying to be a radio announcer. As fate would have it, the entertainer would become a profound singer-songwriter, and arguably one of the best; despite, his initial career path.

One of Cash’s most popular and famous songs “Folsom Prison Blues” was released in 1955, but written in 1953 during his time in the service. Inspired by the motion picture Inside the Walls of Folson Prison, the record went on to win Cash a Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance and a #4 slot on the charts. When the live recording was released in 1968, the song snagged the number one spot.

To learn more about Cash, his music, and his time in the service, consider visiting Nashville’s iconic Johnny Cash Museum when it re-opens. Head to www.johnnycashmuseum.com for more information.

Larry Fleet Releases Touching “Where I Find God”

Larry Fleet Where I Find God

Regardless of where you derive your sense of strength, hope, and spirituality from, country music newcomer Larry Fleet’s newest release will leave you awestruck with its thought-provoking lyrics and sublime vocals. “Where I Find God” is sure to put Fleet on the map.

The new single focuses on how a higher power can come and save you or redirect your path during unexpected times. Fleet’s delivery of the lyrics is both emotive and soulful while showing fans how much the songs rings true for him. The song takes on an even bigger meaning, during this time in society, where uncertainty and need for something to believe in is felt on a macro level by humans around the world.

“From a barstool to that Evinrude / Sunday morning in a church pew / In a deer stand or a hayfield / An interstate back to Nashville. In a Chevrolet with the windows down / Me and Him just ridin’ round / Sometimes whether I’m looking for Him or not / That’s where I find God”

“Where I Find God” features unmatched honesty, and the song should resonate with both true-blue country fans and music fans in general. It uniquely depicts all the times in his life where his God has had his back, regardless of how bad or a good the situation was. With a style similar to Chris Stapleton and a Willie Nelson influence, Fleet is the real deal and proves it with the premiere of this new song.

Jameson Rodgers Features Luke Combs on “Cold Beer Calling My Name”

Cold Beer Calling My Name

Who doesn’t look forward to a cold beer at the end of a long day or week? We might not be able to cheers with friends right now, but boy can we enjoy some new music from Jameson Rodgers featuring superstar Luke Combs.

Rodgers, one of our NYCS Swag Spotlights from back in February of 2018 and most recently one of our 2020 Artists to Watch, just dropped “Cold Beer Calling My Name” which features his buddy and labelmate Luke Combs. The song, written by Alysa Vanderheym, Brett Tyler, Hunter Phelps, and Jameson Rodgers, is a midtempo bop, perfect for waving your hands back and forth, even if you are just doing it in your living room for the time being.

Describing the typical long work week and the buzzy excitement you feel once you’ve accomplished that long Friday, “Cold Beer Calling My Name” is blue-collar magic. As the story unfolds, you can vividly follow each step that leads to the crack of a beer can.

“There’s a cold beer calling my name, feel a good time coming, got a new song humming / and the sunset’s doing its thing / feeling lucky as a 7, yea sometimes heaven is a pocket full of payday green / and my baby putting sugar on me / yeah it’s sure been a pretty damn good day and there’s a cold beer calling my name”

Combs starts the second verse before they join in together each of their vocals complimenting the other. The final chorus just begs for an audience to be singing it back to the singer and we can’t wait until Rodgers sings this one at Mercury Lounge on September 9th (the rescheduled date from last month’s Grew Up In the Country Tour). Put a little chill in your Tuesday as you look forward to brighter days ahead!

Kindness Isn’t Canceled Spotlight: Nurses Helping Nurses Helping Us

It has been a tough few weeks for Nashville, for the country, and for the world. Small businesses are struggling to stay afloat, people are trying to rebuild their homes, many Americans are losing their jobs, and we are all forced to stay in as we fight through this pandemic. Despite all this turmoil, beauty and kindness have remained.

We decided to flip the script and shine our spotlight, while we can, on some of the kindness that we have witnessed from others because Kindness Isn’t Canceled. To grab your exclusive shirt, click here.

We would be remiss if we did not take a moment to spotlight some of the amazing essential workers, who we are so thankful for during these times. Today, we specifically would like to thank all the nurses and the medical professionals, who have dedicated their lives to keeping us healthy and safe.

For the past couple of weeks, nurses from other parts of New York State and other states in the country have come out in droves to New York City and the surrounding areas to lend their services to our beautiful city in order to fight this pandemic. Nurses from North Carolina, Florida, and many other states have left their own families and loved ones behind with a will to save lives.

These nurses are truly putting themselves in what has been described as a “war zone” for the betterment of us. It’s truly an incredible act of courage and selflessness that we cannot fully express our gratitude for. We thank them for their kindness.

Know somebody spreading incredible acts of kindness during these difficult times? E-mail us at: [email protected].

We look forward to continuing to keep bringing you more stories that remind us that Kindness Isn’t Canceled. Join us in our campaign, and buy yourself a t-shirt here. As always, we appreciate your support of  NYCountry Swag.
