Carolyn Miller Drops New Track, “Ain’t About That”

Ain't About That Carolyn Miller

Carolyn Miller, an emerging New York city country artist, is set to make 2020 an impressive year. Following singles “Summer Time” and “What You Can’t Have”, Miller has released her latest summery love chant “Ain’t About That”. “Ain’t About That” is the first of three singles set to be released in 2020. Written by Lance Carpenter, the writer behind Kelsea Ballerini’s “Love Me Like You Mean It”, and Makayla Lynn, this uptempo anthem represents the emotions shared with a loved one that can never be taken away. It’s a joyous commemoration of being in love and one that makes you wanna be in love.

The single opens up with a vivacious introduction, almost commercial resembling, welcoming Miller’s airy vocals and infatuation brimmed lyrics such as, “It’s the way my heart goes racing every time, you tangle your fingers around mine.”

Miller has shared the stage with a cumulative number of established artists such as Ashley McBryde, Chase Rice, Walker Hayes, Sam Hunt, Dustin Lynch, and Chris Janson. She has been named CMT “Next Up Now” artist and one to keep your eye on from Ty Bentli. During quarantine, Miller has been taking advantage of live streaming presenting over 40 live stream concerts for a number of media outlets, radio stations and venues noting, “COVID can’t stop the music. It can’t stop our passion. It is our duty as artists to spread joy and love, especially in the darkest times. Music is needed now more than ever.”

To keep up with Carolyn Miller follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Levi Hummon Releases Breakup Tune, “Rock and Roses”

Rock and Roses Levi Hummon

Country music heartthrob and one of our most recent Swag Sessions artists, Levi Hummon has been working to build his catalog of music this year. He released “Wedding Dress” and “The Story” earlier this year, and today, he premiered “Rock and Roses.”

As always, Hummon’s vocals are piercing and soothing, as he opens his heart to fans through his music. “Rock and Roses” may sound familiar as the singer-songwriter often sang it on his first-ever headlining tour last year. The song, co-written by Hummon with Ben Wells, depicts how Hummon feels after a break-up. As many of us have felt, he starts to recognize his mistakes and what he could have done better. Hindsight is always 20/20.

“One foot in, one foot out / How stupid was I for that / And how did I go and mess it up / I can’t blackout / I can’t forget / All those nights and not be sad / Who taught me to be so dumb”

Moreover, Hummon manages to cleverly utilize “rock and roses” to memorialize that he should have bought a ring for his ex, but unfortunately, things are broken and cannot be fixed. This is a song of repentance and truly feels like a diary entry. Kudos for Hummon for being so honest and vulnerable.

We anticipate that Hummon will continue to release more music before the year is up, and we are excited to see what he comes up with.

[Listen] Matt Stell’s Rockin’ New Track, “If I Was A Bar”

Matt Stell If I Was A Bar

Matt Stell was put on the map with his singles “Prayed For You” and “Everywhere But On”, but those don’t quite capture his rock country vibe that he brings to his live shows but his new single, “If I Was A Bar” certainly does. He tells the story of a breakup, describing how if he was a bar, he’d be getting over it must faster. There’s a hint of anger still left about the breakup, leaving a bitter taste on the tongue, providing the perfect stage for a gritty, dirt road anthem that’s got a lot of punch.

“I wouldn’t have this broken heart, wouldn’t take your leaving half as hard / Wouldn’t be falling this apart if I was a bar”

Stell always writes from the heart, but this one cuts a little deeper, to someone who’s been wronged and feels the need to let it out. He sings about “letting your exes drink for free” creating camaraderie against the injured. It’s a head-banging, electric guitar track that creates solidarity against the girl who walked out. He creates the armor needed to get through the breakup, and sometimes that works better than sinking into despair. Stell has shown his fans that he can do both: the heart-wrenching love songs and the breakup anthems, both the rock and the country that they love.

To keep up with Matt Stell follow him on InstagramTwitter, and Facebook.

Drew Green’s Sony Music Nashville Debut “Little More Be Alright”

Drew Green Little More Be Alright

Drew Green may be an up and coming country artist releasing his debut major label song, but Nashville is practically home for him. Born and raised in Tennessee, and a Tennessee Tech graduate, he couldn’t be more rooted in his home state.

After his previously released track, “Just Talkin'” which was put forth independently, Warner/Chappell Nashville and Cornman Music offered him a publishing deal that truly began his career. It was Florida Georgia Line’s “Colorado” written by Hunter Phelps, Michael Hardy, and Drew himself that landed him the contract as a songwriter.

Through writing, Green was given the opportunity to polish his lyrical abilities and find his own path as an artist. And it paid off. As a newly-signed artist to Sony Music Nashville, Green has begun his exhibition of singing, solidifying a singer-songwriter label.

“Little More Be Alright” is the first of many anticipated singles released under the partnership, making it his official single debut. With a Florida Georgia Line and Sam Hunt feel, Green showcases a bit of a country rap edge and a deep, raspy tone.  “Little More Be Alright” explores a man that leads a simple life but wouldn’t mind having a little more.

“I’m a simple man, I don’t need a lot / I’m good right here with what I got / but a little more, little more, little more would be alright / and I ain’t trying to say I’m trying to have it all / and I ain’t trying to live up higher on the hog / but a little more, little more, little more would be alright”

As the newest addition to Sony Music Nashville’s roster, Green takes you through a life where a little more money, a little more time off, a little more family, and finally, a little more time with his father would be alright. The country genre continues to evolve and blend sonically however the stories that connect with fans are at the heart of the music and that certainly rings true for this new track.

To keep up with Drew Green, follow him on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.

NYCS First Impression: Gone West ‘Canyons’

Gone West Canyons

It officially feels like summer. The weather is warm, you can smell the summer rain before it hits, and the wind is blowing in that windows-down way that only occurs over the next few months. As places and cities start to re-open and life starts to resume in a revised way, new music is just the thing needed to kick off this new chapter of life. Gone West’s debut album, Canyons is perfect for all these things — summer, slowing down, reflecting, and beginnings.

The album’s opener is “Gone West”, a self-titled song that sums up the band’s story. In some way or another, each band member goes west to feel recharged and to feel like themselves. Whether it be Texas, Hawaii, California, Iowa, or their current home, Nashville, they’ve “gone west to bring the best back” with them. The band consists of four members: Colbie Callait, Nelly Joy, Jason Reeves, and Justin Kawika Young. Callait and Reeves have been close friends for over a decade, writing and producing songs like the award-winning “Bubbly” and the hit “I Never Told You”. Reeves is married to Joy, a fellow singer-songwriter, and is close friends with Callait. Young and Callait were formerly engaged and has been Callait’s guitar player for over a decade, and has had his own impressive solo career. Together, the four formed a band.

Songs like “Slow Down”, “Knew You” and “Tides” all have the beachy, ethereal vibes of Callait’s Californian and Young’s Hawaiian roots. “Slow Down” was written by the band and producer Jamie Kenney. “You make me want to slow down/Baby, make it easy/I’ll take the long way ‘round/Just as long as you’re with me”, the band harmonizes on the chorus. “Slow Down” sounds like driving down the California coast. Channeling their love of Bob Marley is “Knew You”, the reggae-country breakup jam that is perfect to listen to at the beach.

Despite this being the debut album from Gone West, they have such a distinct sound that is heard throughout the entire record. It’s reminiscent of Callait and Young’s earlier work and similar to the music of Jack Johnson and Gavin DeGraw. It’s a perfect blend of country, folk, pop, and reggae rolled into one.

There are quite a few breakup songs sung by Callait and Young that fit the theme of parting ways with a loved one and starting over. Among them are songs like “Home Is Where The Heartbreak Is” and their current top 30 single “What Could’ve Been”. “I’m Never Getting Over You”, a fan favorite off Gypsy Heart written by Callait, Reeves, and the legendary Liz Rose. The once poppy song is now a heartbreaking ballad about a love that needs to end, even though both parties still love each other. Another standout is “When To Say Goodbye”, which echoes the previous songs. It’s about two people parting ways because they know they loved as much as they could, and “real love knows when to say goodbye.”

“This Time” and “Tides” are the stunning reflections of life. “This Time” has magical, swirling harmonies that are reminiscent of The Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac. “Tides”, the closer, has dreamy, oceanside guitar and vocals, and it exudes happiness and serenity. There is something nostalgic about it that makes it sound like it’s looking back at the other 12 songs like memories in the past.

Gone West has captured literal lightning in a bottle on Canyons; each song tells a melodic and lyrical story, and it feels like a timeless tale that can be told over and over again. There’s no doubt that it will. It’s effortless, thought-provoking, yet simple. It’s hard to make the perfect album, but Gone West comes pretty close to doing so. Country albums like this are rare, and it will be exciting to see what comes next for the group.

To keep up with Gone West, you can find them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Maren Morris Drops New Music, “Just For Now” & “Takes Two”

Staying relatively quiet over the past few months as she stepped into her new role of motherhood, Maren Morris has spent quality time with her son Hayes and husband Ryan Hurd. While many other artists took to live streams to quietly drop new songs, Morris has now decided to polish a few older, unreleased tracks and gift them to her fans. She took to social media to make the announcement on Wednesday (6/10) stating “GIRL has been out over a year & has been one of the most transformative periods of my life. During this time off the road, I had the opportunity to polish up 2 older songs of mine that I couldn’t wait for you to hear. “Just for Now” + “Takes Two” out Friday. ✨”

“Just For Now” tells a story of a ‘what if’ love that comes out of a dark place. Without putting the same old pressures on a new relationship, the story focuses on the present with lyrics like “This could turn into something or tomorrow morning it could be over”.  Morris wrote the midtempo song with her husband Ryan Hurd and late producer and songwriter busbee, all before Morris and Hurd were together.

“You don’t have to be the answer to a question that’s gonna change my life /
don’t need a savior, I’m just saying I don’t want to say goodnight”

Giving life to a narrative that is often overlooked, the female in the song is not worried about whether or not the relationship will last, rather takes the opportunity to relish at the moment given, and the “gold in the love”, even if it’s just for now.

“Takes Two” has that signature Maren Morris flair, stretching the limits of genre and incorporating R&B and reggaeton vibes. The sexy track was written by Morris, Greg Kurstin, and Sarah Aarons and would compliment her live show, similar to songs from her latest full-length album, GIRL, like “RSVP” and “Make Out With Me”.

“You know you’re not leaving, I’m not leaving, either way, / takes two, takes two to love like this, to love like this”

Although her fall RSVP tour was postponed to 2021, Morris is still finding ways to connect with her fans, releasing music that they have never heard before and giving them something even more exciting to look forward to when live music resumes.

To keep up with Maren Morris follow her on InstagramTwitter, and Facebook.

Thomas Rhett Asks Fans, “What’s Your Country Song?”

Thomas Rhett What's Your Country Song

Throughout quarantine, Thomas Rhett has invited fans inside his home and given the treat of brand new music that shows an intimate look into his personal life. The country star is known for singing about real high and low points in life, whether it be romantically, with starting a family or relating to his career. This has established him as an extremely relatable artist. Through his first IGTV release “What’s Your Country Song” the singer continues to use songwriting to help him through phases of life.

“What’s Your Country Song” contains every element to be an instant classic. This song acknowledges the power of music to guide one through life and provide an emotional connection. Ultimately, pinning the idea that each person can identify a specific “country song” that transports them back to a certain moment in time and carries significant meaning. We featured each of our writers and the songs that turned them into country fans, check it out here.

Nearly each and every line in this song namechecks special lyrics and titles from country songs that we as fans have personal relationships too, whether contemporary or legendary classics. These clever and meaningful lyrics along with the calming acoustic guitar picking pattern that Rhett plays while on camera culminates in an impactful song.

In the first verse, the singer-songwriter playfully sings of common country clichés that evoke feelings of freedom and carefree fun, “Did you cruise down a back road / with your Dixieland Delight / Are you on the Chattahoochee, On a barefoot blue jean night”.

He artfully weaves in these well-known song titles into the lyrics, making for an especially engaging and memorable song. When it comes to the chorus, Rhett is soulful in the way he ties together the song’s meaning as a whole: “Everybody got a small town anthem / Everybody got a story to tell / Everybody got a hallelujah / Everybody been through a little hell / When you’re rolling down a little two lane highway / And you turn your radio on / Tell me which one hits you baby / Yeah what’s your country song”.

During this special moment, he sings about everyone having their own struggles and life stories, and that country music is a constant that helps carry people through. This chorus leads the listeners to reflect on songs that have been alongside them during moments in their lives, both on an everyday level and during pivotal life happenings.

The Nashville fan-favorite even takes us back to the 1980s for a particularly clever lyrical spin from Barbara Mandrell’s legendary hit “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool”, “Are you already country / back when country wasn’t cool”.

Listening to this song is like a scavenger hunt, and with each play there are new creative lyrical references to pick up on. The singer’s acoustic song releases through IGTV have been a welcome surprise to help fans through these tough times. We hope that this track and the others that Rhett has posted will soon be released, whether as acoustic versions or featured on his upcoming studio album.

Carly Pearce Performs A Song for busbee, “Show Me Around”

Carly Pearce busbee

Fans of Carly Pearce know that this has been an emotional year for the songstress. She released her self-titled sophomore record earlier this year, featuring songs like “I Hope You’re Happy Now” and “Closer To You,” which normally would be an exciting time for an artist. For Pearce, however, the record was bittersweet as her friend, co-writer, and producer, busbee passed away before it was released. As she did with the record’s release, Pearce is, yet again, honoring busbee’s memory and legacy premiering a live performance of an unreleased song entitled “Show Me Around.”

Just yesterday, Pearce revealed via her social media that she wrote the track for him after he tragically passed away from brain cancer. She stated, “At his funeral, the amazing @thebarrydean wrote the sweetest words & described how he thought busbee was looking at heaven as “Disneyland,” adding, “If you’ve ever lost someone, hopefully, this song will help you find comfort in the fact that maybe our loved ones are up in heaven waiting to show us around.”

“I hope you know you left your mark on this world / I swear I’d give anything on this earth to see your face, but for now I’ll wait”

Pearce debuted the brand new song on Saturday night (6/6) at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Check out the live stream of the song above. She lays her heart out on the line in this touching and heartfelt tribute. “Show Me Around” may be one of the singer-songwriter’s best and most emotive songs to date. The song expresses hoping to meet a loved one again in wherever we go when we pass away.

Pearce does not hold back, fighting through the tough lyrics in this stunning performance of an incredible song. We think busbee would be proud.

“Get to spend forever / Talk about whatever / When I get there promise you’ll track me down / Show me around”

If You Like The 1975, Then You’ll Love…

Sometimes country music seems to be a hit or miss when it comes to getting friends or family to listen. Brantley Gilbert Releases “Hard Days” During A Crucial Time

Brantley Gilbert Hard Days

Brantley Gilbert provides us with a small sense of hope in his new release, “Hard Days”. The naturally rough voice of this Georgia native mixed with the desperate tone over these plainly honest lyrics creates a sense of enlightenment.

“This song means a lot to me,” he states in a press release. “It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a song that can stand on its own lyrically. Brock Berryhill, Logan Wall, Jimi Bell, and Jay Brunswick gave me the opportunity to work with them, and it’s something I’m extremely proud to be a part of. I feel like all of us are in need of a little bit of healing and in need of a little bit of hope. And this song offers that.”

“If you never had hard days / If you never had a heartbreak / Never had more than you can take / Or carried the weight / Of life on your shoulders / Would you feel like you earned it? / Would you live with a purpose? / Or ever known your own strength / If you never had hard days?”

This song is one of many releases that have been given to the public during these difficult last few months. It comes at a time when every listener, every person, every soul, can empathize and interpret the message in the same way with a similar story.

This song is a reminder that sometimes all those hard days, and there will be countless, establish strength and a sense of purpose; the will for a better life and the courage to attain it.

“‘Hard Days’ is about finding and acknowledging hope in the midst of turmoil and taking the good with the bad,” shares Gilbert in a press release. “I look back on some of the harder times in my life and think about where things are now, and I’m thankful for the bad that led to the good.”

“You wouldn’t know what it’s like to dance in the rain / Never see the silver lining when the skies go gray / You wouldn’t know a dream come true from a few that don’t / You’d never find your way on a broken road”

To keep up with Brantley Gilbert, follow him on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.
