Swon Brothers: ‘Nashlahoma’ – Album Review

The Voice’s most successful duo, The Swon Brothers, have released their sophomore album Nashlahoma which features eight previously released tracks including “Travelin’ On”, a collaboration with Vince Gill. Read more about the project below.

The Swon Brothers Nashlahoma

The Swon Brothers latest album, ‘Nashlahoma’ is available now

The Swon Brothers, a country duo from Oklahoma who are best known for their single “Later On”, which reached over 11 million streams on Spotify, have released a second studio album Nashlahoma to break the gap following their 2014 self-titled debut album. Despite consistent single and EP drops, these musicians are, in a sense, reintroducing themselves with this new collection of music that they produced entirely themselves.

Evan Hutchings, who has played various roles with artists such as Keith Urban, Justin Moore and Jimmie Allen, offered a hand in the production of previous releases “This Town” and “Travelin’ On” that are now featured on Nashlahoma. The former captures a scenario in which a town has changed since you’d last visited with a hint of regret and nostalgia for a past relationship that seemingly was the reason for leaving the town altogether. The latter, a collaboration with Vince Gill, tugs at sentimental strings and showcases The Swon Brothers’ softer vocal abilities. Similarly to “This Town”, “Travelin’ On” involves the desire to rewind and relive all moments shared whether they’re good or bad.

“So let’s hit rewind, and replay the times we’ve had together / Laugh ’til we cry, raise ’em up high to the best night ever / Life’s just a song you sing ’til you’re gone / Until then keep travelin’ on, travelin’ on”

Alternately, “Get It On”, which falls on the tracklist at #7 yet is the first unreleased song in the lineup, is an entertaining and lively narrative that utilizes a playful approach through lyrics. Written by Nicholas Baum, Robyn Collins, Quint Collins, Seth Costner, Colton Swon, and Zach Swon, the phrases referred to are twisted and meshed into flirty, shameless revelations.

“Good On Me” (Rodney Clawson, Corey Crowder, Tyler Hubbard, and Chris Tompkins) follows in suit both physically in the set as well as in a content fashion whereas the message translated through the melody is lighthearted in its country-style insinuations.

One of the last productions that is sandwiched between two presented versions of “Travelin’ On”, is as organic as it gets. Colton and Zach Swon wrote, produced, and performed “Get On Down The Road” without the hands or notions of outside sources. With a heavy handful of country twang and gentle instrumental elements, the indirect closing song provides listeners with a sense of The Swon Brothers’ individuality and musicianship.

Nashlahoma is an eclectic blend of qualities that The Swon Brothers bring to the table, not only to country music but to music as a whole.

Tim McGraw ‘McGraw Machine Hits: 2013-2019’ – Album Review

Tim McGraw is celebrating his career with Big Machine Records and Spirit Music Group with his new greatest hits album, McGraw Machine Hits: 2013-2019, and what an iconic career he’s had.

Tim McGraw Machine Hits: 2013-2019

Tim McGraw’s McGraw Machine Hits: 2013-2019 is available now

The album starts off with a bang by highlighting tracks from McGraw’s Damn Country Music album which was released in 2015. This includes “How I’ll Always Be” and “Top of the World”. The iconic “Humble and Kind” is also featured, which is probably the most memorable song from the album. Written by Lori McKenna, it’s an important message, and became a popular mother/son dance at weddings.

Next up McGraw highlights tracks from Sundown Heaven Town which was released in 2014. McGraw included “Diamond Rings and Old Barstools”, “Meanwhile Back at Mamas”, and 2x Platinum “Shotgun Rider”.

The final album highlighted is the iconic 2013 Two Lanes of Freedom. The 2x platinum “Highway Don’t Care” featuring Keith Urban and Taylor Swift was just one of the hits to come from this album. McGraw also chose to include “Nashville Without You”, “Southern Girl”, “One of Those Nights”, and “Truck Yeah”.

It must have been a hard choice to decide which songs were going to be included which is why the greatest hits album finishes with three bonus songs, “Drive”, “May We All” with Florida Georgia Line, and a never before heard cover of “Redneck Girl” featuring Midland.

It’s no secret that McGraw has had an incredible career that deserves to be celebrated. We can’t wait to see what’s next.

Lady A: ‘Ocean Deluxe’ – Album Review

Lady A’s Ocean Deluxe Edition is available now, November 20th, everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the release, which includes six brand new tracks.

Lady A Ocean Deluxe Album

Lady A’s Ocean Deluxe Album is available now, November 20th.

Lady A captivated fans with the release of their eighth studio album ‘Ocean’ last fall, and now the deluxe album is here! Featuring three new songs plus three reimagined tracks from the original record, the multi-platinum trio is excited to offer a new way for listeners to experience the project.

“It’s crazy to think this album is only turning a year old because it has already been part of so many moments for us as a band,” Hillary Scott said in a press release earlier this month. “We wanted to share a couple of never-released tracks and put a spin on some others that have been fun to play around with during quarantine.”

The album’s lead single in 2019, “What If I Never Get Over You” skyrocketed to the top of the country airplay charts, becoming the band’s first number-one song since 2014. The deluxe version was recorded live from Nashville music venue, 3rd and Lindsley. The at-home version of ‘Let It Be Love’ is beautifully simple with only piano accompaniment.

‘Champagne Night’, the single that came from NBC’s Songland, is new to the project but not to listeners. The deluxe album features both the original song and a tiki bar version that will seemingly transport you from your house straight to an imaginary beach.

The two brand new tracks, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Underwater’ match the pure harmonies and deep lyrics that made Ocean such a departure from the trio’s more recent sound. ‘Heroes’ featuring fellow BMLG recording artist, Thomas Rhett is a homage to the country legends we have lost.

“All of my heroes have died / but lord may they rest in peace / oh so here’s to the songs that will always live on / from now until eternity”

Band member Charles Kelley sings the melody line in ‘Underwater’, a haunting ballad about relying on those we love to pull us through.

“Hear the silence / hear them screaming / you’re the only one who can hear it / I’m a whisper / I’m a secret / and you’re the only one who can keep it / you just know me like you know nobody else can / you just understand me underwater”

One thing that country music fans can rely on during these trying times is that their favorite artists continue to write, record, and release some incredible music that we can all lean on.

Lee Brice: ‘Hey World’ – Album Review

Country singer-songwriter, Lee Brice released his fifth studio album, Hey World today, November 20th. The 15-song project touches on many themes from love, death, heartbreak, drinking, and the current state of the world. Keep reading below as we dig deeper into each track.

Lee Brice new album Hey World

Lee Brice’s new album ‘Hey World’ is available now, November 20th

Lee Brice has been a powerhouse in country music since his 2010 debut album Love Like Crazy. In that time, he has had eleven top-10 hits, seven of which reaching the number one spot. His newest album, Hey World, out today, already has two number one songs in “One of Them Girls” and his collaboration with Carly Pearce, “I Hope You’re Happy Now.” The former of which is also his highest-charting song on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching the number 17 spot on a pop-dominated chart.

Hey World is just my next step in life. Where I am, who I am, what I love, and what I feel,” Brice said in a recent press release. “From the songs to the production to the order they play in, I always have and still do make it my goal to get better and better at what I do. Short of my family, my wife, and friends, my music is the deepest part of me. So, I am overjoyed to say that I think I have made my best project to date.”

As stated before, there are a variety of different topics covered throughout the album, making each of the 15 tracks its own short story. This is noticeable right out of the gate within the first five songs. “Atta Boy” is sung for a father who raised his children the right way and for the friends who take other friends’ keys when they had too much to drink.

“One of Them Girls” is about a guy at the bar who is infatuated with this particular girl and he tries to gauge what she is all about. “More Beer” is a fun, drinking anthem that will bring listeners back to their college football tailgate days; comparable to previous Brice hits “Drinking Class” and “Parking Lot Party.” The singer in “Memory I Don’t Mess With” contradicts himself by saying he does not want to reminisce about a certain girl but then discusses very specific moments he has shared with her. This former love interest was clearly the one who got away from him. Rounding out the first five, “Save the Roses” is very similar to Chris Janson’s “Hawaii on Me,” as the recently deceased man in the song tells everyone at his funeral to stop wasting their time mourning him and get out there and go fishing or do something they love. “Take it from me in my brand new point of view, the biggest regret of your life won’t be what you did, but what you didn’t do.”

The next three songs, “Don’t Need No Reason,” “Do Not Disturb,” and “Soul” all touch on love, but different aspects of it. In “Don’t Need No Reason,” the singer shows his vulnerability towards a woman and admits he does not need it to be a special occasion as his love for her is year-round. As this song shows admiration for a woman’s heart, “Do Not Disturb” shows admiration for a woman’s body. In this R&B-inspired track, the singer tells his lover to meet him at a hotel for some “do not disturb time” as he needs an escape from the rest of the world for a little while. “Soul” is a combination of both. At the beginning of the song, he calls her “Mozart in the sheets” and says she makes a sinner out of him, but then in the next verse he says “You don’t need to be undressin’ to feel like you’re impressin’. Must’ve died and gone to heaven.”

This album can get very deep at times, touching on current world issues like tragedy, mental health, and prejudice. In “Sons and Daughters,” Brice states his displeasure with all the hate in the world. People are quick to judge the stereotypical southerner–who is just trying to grow crops to feed their family–or police officer–who puts their life on the line to protect his/her community. Brice reminds us that everyone’s life is bigger than their own. They are someone’s child, someone’s brother or sister, and maybe even someone’s mother or father; the hate you give to them impacts not only them but their friends and family’s lives as well.

“Lies” is a message for all those struggling with self-image who don’t think they are good enough or worth anything. Brice reminds them that “the cruelest lies of all the lies we tell are the ones we tell ourselves.” The title track serves as Brice’s letter to the universe, telling it to stop with all the tragedies. He can longer turn on the television without hearing bad news. Between COVID-19, racial discrimination, and political division, Brice’s heart has “had all it can take.” This track features former The Voice contestant, Blessing Offor, who takes the second verse and provides beautiful harmonies in the final chorus.

To contrast the social messages, there are several light-hearted, pure-country tracks sprinkled throughout the album. Along with “More Beer,” there’s “Good Ol’ Boys” and “If You.” “Good Ol’ Boys” is an ode to the southern man who works hard, closes a bar down, and finishes a good fight. “If You” is pretty much a big middle finger to everyone who disrespects the southern lifestyle. Brice expresses how he is accepting of everyone, but if they got a problem with him and his friends he “don’t give a f**k.”

We agree with Brice in that this may be his best project to date. This album has a little something for everyone: for those trying to get in their feels, those trying to seduce their lover, and for those just trying to have a good time. Whether you’re a Lee Brice fan or not, one has to commend his courage for tackling issues such as these. Brice says “I stand by everything I have ever done, but pull from it as well to help me exceed my own expectations. Because of my team, my co-producers, my engineers, my label, I was able to make what I hope will be my most successful album to date.”

Chris Young and Kane Brown Collaborate on “Famous Friends”

Chris Young released a new song today, November 20th, with fellow country star, Kane Brown titled “Famous Friends,” available to buy, stream or download now.

Country star Chris Young pays homage to the people of Rutherford, Hamilton, and Davidson County, Tennessee in his new song “Famous Friends” featuring his good friend, Kane Brown. Written by Young, Cary Barlowe, and Corey Crowder, this fun track shouts out specific individuals that may not be known to the general public, but are big names back in their hometowns. Young and Brown have collaborated in the past with the song “Setting the Night on Fire,” on the deluxe version of Kane Brown’s debut album. This is Young’s first new release since “If That Ain’t God” back in July.

I’ve got some famous friends you’ve probably never heard of / But back in Rutherford County our crowd is second to none  / You might not know ‘em here in this big city we’re in  / But when I go back home I’ve got some famous friends

“This song is a piece of me, and it means a lot because it’s honest and it’s real-life,” Young shared in a recent press release. “Plus, Kane and I are good friends, and being able to have that history together, it adds a whole other level to the track. ‘Famous Friends’ is one of my favorite songs – it’s personal and it’s a lot of fun, so I’m glad it’s getting out there for people to hear it.”

Aside from this being their second song together, Young and Brown have an extensive history. Growing up, Brown was a huge fan of Young’s, winning his eleventh-grade talent show singing a rendition of Young’s hit song “Getting’ You Home.” His first live concert was seeing Young in support of Brad Paisley on his 2013 Beat This Summer Tour. The two later toured together on Young’s 2018 Losing Sleep Tour. Young performed “Drowning” at the 2019 CMT Artists of the Year special in honor of Brown’s drummer Kenny Dixon, who passed away in a car accident earlier that week. He recently won Performance of the Year at the 2020 CMT Awards for that performance.

Young has been slow to drop new music, with his last studio album being released back in October of 2017. However, we believe he is close to a new album, with “Famous Friends” being the fifth single he has put out since Losing Sleep. Others include “Drowning,” “If That Ain’t God,” “This Town Ain’t Big Enough” with Lauren Alaina, and his top-5 radio hit, “Raised on County.”

Ashland Craft Releases New Song “Two Wildflowers and a Box of Wine”

Ashland Craft’s new song, “Two Wildflowers and a Box of Wine” is available now, November 20th, everywhere you buy or stream music. Written by Craft with Jonathan Singleton, and Rob Snyder, take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the track.

Country newcomer, Ashland Craft is a vocalist and a songwriter fans are going to want to pay attention to. After releasing her debut single, “Trainwreck” back in April, Craft has been hard at work to follow up the major-label release. Today, she premieres her new song “Two Wildflowers and a Box of Wine.”

Coined by Craft as “the closest I’ll get to a love song, at least right now,” the new jam is a song for the lovers and the dreamers. “Two Wildflowers and a Box of Wine” is laced with powerful imagery, that southern-rock flair, and the songstress’s signature gritty vocals. Instead of being a straight-lace love song, Craft wrote a song with songwriters, Jonathan Singleton, and Rob Synder that will resonate with the misfits, the wild ones, and the star-gazers.

“I”ll be all yours and you can be all mine / Just two wildflowers and a box of wine / Just two wildflowers and a box of wine”

Craft is one of the most exciting new singer-songwriters out there right now. Fans of HARDY, Luke Combs, and Morgan Wallen are sure to fall in love with her undeniable charm and talent. She is one to look out for and to keep on your playlists!

Released today, Dickerson surprises fans with a collaboration with his real-life friends, Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line. “It’s About Time” is instantly catchy, begging to be performed in front of thousands of dancing fans at a live concert.

Morgan Wallen Releases Three Brand New Songs Ahead of Double Album

Morgan Wallen surprised fans by announcing his 30-track forthcoming sophomore release, “Dangerous, the double album” moments after winning the 2020 CMA New Artist of the Year award. Today, as pre-sales kick-off, Wallen has released three brand new tracks “Somebody’s Problem”, “Livin’ The Dream”, and “Still Goin Down”. Take a look below as we dig a little deeper into the new music.

Morgan Wallen Releases Three Brand New Songs Ahead of 'Dangerous, the double album'

Morgan Wallen Releases Three Brand New Songs Ahead of ‘Dangerous, the double album’

Morgan Wallen has been hinting at new music for what seems like the whole year, but recently we learned that the entertainer’s sophomore project is set to be released on January 8th, 2021. Not only will we get a new record in the new year, but it is a double feature, full of 30 brand new songs for fans to listen to. Today, three songs were released as instant gratification tracks off Dangerous, including Wallen’s demo, “Somebody’s Problem,” Still Goin’ Down,” and “Livin’ The Dream.”

Each of the three songs are full of that country-boy charm that we have grown to love from the singer. The first, “Somebody’s Problem” was teased via Instagram, as a demo, back in September. The song is a narrative that is all about a budding new relationship. In true Wallen fashion, the singer will be sure to make fans swoon with his relatable, catchy, and romantic lyrics.

“I think I’m liking where it’s going / I’d like to try me some of somebody’s problem / Somebody’s goodbye / Somebody’s last call number that they can’t find / Somebody’s best day, somebody’s worst night / Somebody’s reason for leaving on the porch light”

We get another taste of the upcoming project with “Still Goin’ Down.” Co-written by Wallen with HARDY and songwriter, Ryan Vojtesak, the track kicks off disc 2 of the double project. Another slower tempo jam, the singer taps into his “Chasin’ You” vibes with this one. Although the song is all about growing up in the country, it truly is a love song to the town that raised him. Like on Wallen’s unapologetic debut single, “The Way I Talk,” he showcases his roots, no matter what anyone thinks.

“I’d be damned if I sound like something I ain’t / Cause for some folks, the backroad gets old, but for me, it just can’t / Cause I’m from a small town, southern drawl crowd”

The third new song, “Livin’ The Dream” is also co-written by Wallen and HARDY, as well as, Ben Burgess and Jacob Durrett. Recently, the entertainer shared a clip of this song on TikTok, telling fans how personal the song is to him. “Never thought I’d release it, but here we are,” he added admitting to personal struggles that he’s been through, due to the fame. Vulnerably sharing struggles with alcohol and his priorities, “Livin’ The Dream” expresses the less glamorous side of success and fame. With this song, Wallen gives fans an honest account of his thoughts and feelings in what seems like a journal entry.

“I don’t ever get nowhere / Signed my life away to be the life of the party / Yeah to everybody else / I look like a rockstar / In and out of cop cars / Living out of a suitcase”

All three of the released songs are exactly what we have come to expect from Wallen. We appreciate his knack for songwriting and vulnerability. Regardless of what he is singing, the entertainer finds a way to connect with fans and makes you want to listen over and over again.

Tyler Hubbard’s Shares New Song “Thank God For Little Girls” in Heart Warming Video

After reuniting with his family after almost two weeks, Tyler Hubbard shares a song with his daughter that he wrote for her in quarantine called “Thank God for Little Girls”. The lyrics are beautiful, but it’s the video of him playing the song to her for the first time that will make your heart smile.

For those who may not know, Tyler Hubbard, of Florida Georgia Line, tested positive for Covid-19 a couple of weeks ago. Luckily, he was mostly asymptomatic and was able to quarantine close to home..on his tour bus in his driveway. While he wasn’t physically with his family, he would see his wife and kids through the windows of the tour bus, from afar in the driveway, and on FaceTime.

Over the 13-day quarantine, Hubbard kept fans in the loop of what his day-to-day consisted of through his Instagram stories, and there was a whole lot of songwriting. In addition to the many FaceTime calls and videos that he and his wife Hayley shared on social media, Hubbard also gave a good amount of teasers for the many songs he was writing on the tour bus from song clips to lyrics. It was clear how much he missed his wife and kids (daughter, Liv and sons, Luca and Atlas) and it seems those feelings inspired some new music.

Today, Hubbard gave fans the biggest teaser yet with a song called “Thank God for Little Girls”, which he wrote with Lori McKenna and Dave Barnes. He wrote the song for his daughter, Liv, and shared a video that his wife took of him playing the song for her for the first time.

You hear Hubbard say “it’s about you” at the beginning of the video. When Liv hears the chorus, she says “my daddy” and touches his face adorably. After hearing the whole song, Liv tells him “I like that song for me, I want to keep it so much…forever and ever.” Not sure what’s more precious, the song, or this video.

In the caption of the post, Hubbard shared “This is one of my favorite moments with her so far. Thanks for capturing it @hayley_hubbard … I’m not crying … You’re crying”.

We hope to hear the full song soon, along with many more from Hubbard’s bus quarantine!

Below are the (partial) lyrics from what was played on the video:

Yeah I used to live for Friday Nights

Pick-up trucks and beer

Hangin out with all my rowdy friends

Was something I held dear

I thought those were the glory days

But now I can’t believe

How my view on life is changing

How much sweeter it can be

I thank God for country music

I thank God for this guitar

I thank God for every friend I got

And fireflies in the dark

But there’s nothing like the angel

That came into my world

And says “I love you daddy”

Thank God for little girls

Yeah now-a-days I hurry home

And run right up the stairs

Just in time to watch her fold her hands

And say them bedtime prayers

She thanks the lord for Mom and Dad

and Grandma back at home

Yeah she’s got her whole list memorized

And I memorize my own

I thank God for country music

I thank God for this guitar

I thank God that I found Jesus

He was right there in my heart

So thank you for the angel

That came and rocked my world

Taught me how to love the father

Thank God for little girls

Kameron Marlowe: Self-Titled Debut EP – Review

Kameron Marlowe’s brand new self-titled EP is available now, November 13th on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we recap our first impression of the songs off the new EP.

Kameron Marlowe

Kameron Marlowe EP, out now November 13th

Here at NYCountry Swag, we pride ourselves on truly having an ear for good music and incredible singer-songwriters. We can honestly say that recording artist and songwriter, Kameron Marlowe is the real deal, and it is only just the beginning for the budding star. Marlowe just released his debut major label self-titled EP today, and you are going to want to listen, and listen again!

Beginning with his debut single and solo-write, “Giving You Up,” Marlowe takes fans on a journey through the other side of a breakup when you are finally just about over someone and moving on, and then your ex calls. He sings about putting an end to the back and forth nature of a messy breakup. The song was a hit with fans, garnering over 27 million spins on Spotify, and with its catchy tune and touching lyrics, it is clear why.

“Cause I’m giving you up, just like I did them Marlboro Lights / And I’m giving you up, the same way I did the whiskey on ice”

Marlowe transitions into another relatable song, “Sober As A Drunk.” The song is full of play on words and enticing comparisons, as you navigate the unwanted feelings of missing someone. Although comprised of melancholy lyrics, the singer finds a way to highlight the mid-tempo nature of the catchy tune.

Continuing to tug at our heartstrings and showcase vulnerability, Marlowe emotes on “Goin’ There Today” with one of the best vocal performances on the project. One of our favorites off the EP, the story-telling song walks us through the emotions of a guy trying to stay clear from the person that broke his heart. The title is a way to express avoiding memories that are associated with pain and heartache.

“I sure could go for a cup of black coffee / They serve the best at the corner cafe / But it’ll have to wait ‘cause truth is / I don’t feel like goin’ there today”

On the next song, “Burn ‘Em All,” which was also released earlier this year, Marlowe relates to the everyday man, paying homage to the blue-collar workers and all the hardworking people out there. The track perfectly highlights the singer’s gritty growl and enticing vocals. Similarly, “Hungover,” one of the most upbeat tunes on the EP features killer vocals. This time the singer aims to get away from the heartache by doing what we all have done, drinking. “I’m in the middle of a heartbreak bend,” sings Marlowe in one of the most relatable lyrics there is.

The EP ends with another impressive vocally-driven song entitled “Leavin’ to Me.” On the track, Marlowe pleads with his partner to break up with him. It’s clear that the relationship is toxic, but we all know how hard it is to leave something that we thought would be our forever. This song is just another example of how well Marlowe can emote, sing, and write.

After listening to the six songs off the EP, fans will be able to understand both the type of music that Marlowe makes and his journey to choosing these songs for his record. Laced with songs for the everyday, hardworking fans and breakup songs that everyone can relate to, Marlowe has tapped into a side of country music that all fans can appreciate.
