Chris Young Releases Emotional New Song Titled “Drowning”

Chris Young Drowning

There are few things more powerful in music than real human emotion. When I think about the songs that have moved me the most in my life, I think about those moments where I could feel the artist’s every word and every emotion. So is the case on Chris Young’s newest release, “Drowning.”

Young premiered the song at the Grand Ole Opry last week and played it a few times during CMA Fest, revealing that the song was inspired by the passing of his best friend. For Young, the Opry performance was an emotional one, and the usually jovial singer broke down during his performance. He took to social media to share his reasons for releasing the song, writing, “Last week, I debuted my new tune “Drowning” at the @opry and broke down in the middle of it… since then so many people have shared stories of loved ones lost and how they have connected to this song. I want you guys to have this one, and make it your own, so I’m going to release it this Friday.”

The song is utterly heartbreaking due to the fact that loss is an emotion everyone can relate to. Co-written by Young, Josh Hoge, and Corey Crowder, Young admits the song was Crowder’s idea and was built off of the line “Missing you comes in waves,” which led to the chorus.

“I can’t help at all but think about it / How you were taken way too soon / It ain’t the same here without you,” Young sings, his voice deep with emotion, “I’ve gotta say, missin’ you comes in waves / And tonight I’m drowning.”

At his CMA Fest fan party, Young admitted that the song’s universal appeal was one of the most interesting things about it. “We wrote it really open ended because everybody in the room was thinking about a different person.” He also revealed that for him, the song was the first about his friend. “When he passed away, I had never really written something about it until this song and I really wanted it to be something special.”

“I know you’re in a better place/ one day I’ll see you again,” Young sings achingly. “But it’s killing me we can’t be face to face/ I miss my best friend.”

Young also revealed on Twitter that “Drowning” is one of his favorite songs on his forthcoming album, due out later this year, and it’s absolutely clear why. With his powerful voice laced with emotion, Young is at his finest on “Drowning.” The song is truly country music at its finest, and we can’t wait to watch it hit #1.
