Morgan Wallen: ‘One Thing At A Time’ – Album Review

After a monumental sophomore album, Morgan Wallen is back with a massive record that he hopes will top it all. The superstar’s third studio album One Thing At A Time is a 36-track project, featuring songs for each and every type of country fan and music fan alike. Time and time again, Wallen proves his staying power, and One Thing At A Time is another example of that.

“This record represents the last few years of my life, the highs and the lows,” Wallen shares in a press release. “It also brings together the musical influences that have shaped me as an artist – country, alternative and hip-hop. There are 36 songs on this album because we just kept exploring with fresh lyrics, music and production ideas and these are the songs that felt right to me. It was a blast to create, and I was so grateful to be back in the studio to lay this out for my fans.”

The brand new project kicks off with a true-blue country anthem, “Born With A Beer In My Hand.” Wallen explores themes of drinking in country music, dabbling with sobriety on this touching opener. Similarly on “Dying Man,” the album’s closer, Wallen laments on vices that have taken some of the greats. According to the singer, he credits his son for helping him get on a straighter path. The single is one of the stand-outs on the project.

The record continues to progress with previously released songs “Last Night” and “Everything I Love.” “Last Night” is already primed to be Wallen’s next single, while “Everything I Love” is an incredible country song about not being able to face all your favorite spots after going through a heartbreak. Wallen continues to explore themes of heartbreak on songs like, “Devil Don’t Know,” “Keith Whitley,” and “Had It,” among others.

Themes of nostalgia and growth are also evident on the new record. On “’98 Braves,” the entertainer uses a baseball reference as a metaphor for expressing a relationship that had run its course. The song has similar vibes to Wallen hits like “7 Summers” and “More Than My Hometown.” On “Tennessee Numbers,” the singer laments again about a relationship that was not just quite right.

Of course, Wallen enlists heavy hitters to collaborate on his new album. On “In the Bible,” the singer-songwriter duets with his friend and frequent collaborator, HARDY. The single is a story-telling song that brings the honesty and authenticity that we are used to seeing from both artists.

On the additional collaborations, “Man Made A Bar” featuring Eric Church and “Cowgirls” featuring ERNEST, Wallen gives off fresh, nostalgic vibes. While the former is a more countrified tune about a man needing to create a bar to get through hardships, “Cowgirls” features a more modern flair, as a celebration to cowgirls. The latter vibe is one we see sprinkled throughout the rest of the project.

Fans who appreciate Wallen’s more modern side, where he infiltrates hip-hop influences will be drawn to songs like “Hope That’s True, ” and “180 (Lifestyle.)” On “Hope That’s True,” the entertainer sings about polar opposites with a melody that will leave the song stuck in your head. Similarly, on “180 (Lifestyle),” Wallen leans into vibes that are similar to his song “Broadway Girls.” Track 8, “Ain’t That Some” may appeal to fans who enjoy when Wallen bridges the gap between his country and hip-hop influences.

The singer continues to bring his own flavor throughout the record on some of our favorite songs for the project, “Me + All Your Reasons” and “Single Than She Was.” While both songs are different lyrically and sonically, they feel reminiscent of Wallen’s debut record, an ode to day one fans.

Finally, one of the standout tracks on the record comes at the tail-end of the project with “Outlook.” Written by Wallen with Rodney Clawson and Jeff Hyde, the single is a full-circle moment for the artist, where he acknowledges he lets go of some of his old waves in favor of faith and growth. The track is a beautiful moment on the project.

In just a few years, Wallen has given country music lovers more music than any fan can even ask for, and with each release, he continues to evolve his artistry, while simultaneously cementing himself into the country music landscape. One Thing At A Time is a record to be proud of.

According to Braden in a recent press release, “Ever since I knew how to strum a couple of chords on a guitar, rock music has been a huge influence on my style. Dierks Bentley: ‘Gravel & Gold’ – Album Review

On his tenth studio album, Gravel & Gold, Dierks Bentley is here to remind listeners why he has been one of country’s most consistent hitmakers for two decades. On the fourteen song, self-produced project, the gravel-voiced superstar shines brighter than he has in years, taking a journey through the banjo-infused, stomping country music that is purely Dierks.

“Gravel & Gold is finally here. It has been four years in the making trying to perfect this project. Each song, each story is such a strong part of the gravel that led me to the gold of where we are now,” He reveals in a statement. “I am thankful for the highs and lows and can’t wait for you all to come on the journey with me.”

Bentley is immediately full throttle country on the album’s first track, “Same Ol’ Me,” proclaiming that he’s the same guy he’s always been, and it’s instantly apparent that that’s the case. In fact, he might just be better. Musically, Gravel & Gold is phenomenal, mixing traditional country instrumentation with hints of Southern rock and a bluegrass twang that has become one of Bentley’s secret weapons.

Another of Bentley’s greatest strengths is choosing duet partners who compliment him perfectly, as is the case on “Cowboy Boots.” On the immediate standout, he trades verses with the golden-voiced Ashley McBryde with an ode to everything that the famous footwear represents. “They got a reckless reputation that they always live up to,” The pair harmonize on the clever lyrics. “That’s why they call ’em cowboy boots.”

“Something Real” has hints of “I Hold On” in its role as a stadium-ready anthem that finds Bentley grappling with the shallow side of stardom, admitting that “Sometimes a crowd makes me lonely, Sometimes a shot just makes me sad.” Likewise, on “Sun Sets in Colorado” and “Still,” Bentley is introspective, enjoying life’s simpler things and places. On the former, he’s found himself at home, singing “My heart beats in Tennessee, but my sun sets in Colorado,” while “Still” has him finding peace in nature. “My head’s clear as the sky, Like the trees with no breeze, my heart is still,” He sings on the aural deep breath. “Where the world’s the way God made it still.”

Both “Gold” and “Heartbreak Drinking Tour” have hints of 90’s country, with “Gold” being another immediate standout. “Walking Each Other Home” is a clever take on humanity that can’t be missed, while “All the Right Places” has one of the most earwormy hooks on the album, as Bentley proclaims “My heart’s been broke in all the right places.”

“Beer at My Funeral” is an amusing take on death as the singer-songwriter wants his final hurrah to be a party. “They better have cold beer at my funeral // They better play good country music // When they lay me low,” He sings over smooth guitar riffs. “They better have cold beer at my funeral // If they don’t I ain’t gonna go.”

The album wraps with the tongue-in-cheek Billy Strings collab, “High Note,” which finds Bentley enjoying the finer and higher things in life. He’s settling in with some of “Willie’s best” on the twangy, fiddle-filled toe tapper of a track that ends the album on the highest of notes, quite literally.

While Bentley has admitted that Gravel & Gold was actually the third iteration of his new album and the result of two scrapped projects, it just goes to prove the old adage right: Third time’s the charm. And Gravel & Gold is indeed just that: charming.

Jordan Davis: ‘Bluebird Days’ – Album Review

“This is exactly the record I want to put out,” Jordan Davis says of his new album, Bluebird Days. “I don’t know what’s going to happen with it, but I can at least tell you that the one certainty I do have about this record is I’m proud of it.”

Produced by Paul Giovanni, the follow-up to 2018’s Home State features seventeen new tracks, fifteen of which were co-written by the singer-songwriter. Over the course of the album, Davis explores universal truths from love to love lost, nostalgia to the passage of time, and the hard truths of life to of course, having a beer or two. However, what Davis does better than most is turn these themes into a mix of radio-ready singles, introspective album tracks, and so much more.

For example, the contemplative “Sunday Saints” finds him grappling with his humanity, holding the Bible in one hand and a bottle in the other. The Louisiana native cleverly sneaks in double wordplay and perhaps a nod to the New Orleans Saints throughout the track. Simultaneously, the autobiographical title track has him dealing with his parent’s divorce. Likewise, “Short Fuse” has Davis coming to grips with his anger, while “You’ve Got My Number” finds Davis going through a breakup with someone who knows him all too well. It’s a clever take on the breakup drunk dial song, as he turns the phrase “You’ve got my number” to be both literal and figurative.

The title track is a striking moment of introspection as he mourns the loss of his parent’s marriage and the childhood he became accustomed to.

“They used to be sunshine and roses // Their heads were way over their heels // Said they do then they don’t // Ended up dancing right through a minefield // ‘Cause the truth about living a lie is // That the lie never outlives the truth // Two hearts fell in love and two hearts grew apart // They went their separate ways and our bluebird days went dark”

In a similar vein is “Part of Life,” recorded almost exactly ten years after Davis departed Shreveport, Louisiana for Nashville. The track seems especially poignant as he grapples with the negative, and positive, occurrences that make life what it is.

“You live and learn and good ones go // You find out on down the road // When you lay it all on out and get down to the heart of it // Man that’s just life and that’s all part of it”

Davis is also a romantic throughout Bluebird Days, evidenced on his fifth number-one single, “What My World Spins Around” and the sexy “No Time Soon,” which has him promising a lot of lovin’ when he gets home. Meanwhile, “Midnight Crisis” finds him trading verses with Danielle Bradbery on the stunning ballad between a pair of exes who can’t quite move on.

Two additional standouts are “Next Thing You Know” and “Money Isn’t Real,” both of which have him looking at life through new eyes. On the former, he muses about how life comes at you fast, from meeting someone to getting married to having children, much in a vein similar to Kenny Chesney’s classic “Don’t Blink.”

Meanwhile, on “Money Isn’t Real,” which is one of only two songs not co-penned by Davis, he puts his own spin on the adage that money can’t buy happiness. “A dollar doesn’t make you rich,” He sings, “When it comes to happiness, money isn’t real.”

“Fishing Boat” is a special moment on the LP, a sentimental dedication to his grandfather, who he spent much of his childhood fishing with. “I bought a fishing boat—that was, like, the biggest purchase I’ve made,” Davis says. “It’s very unassuming, it’s nothing special at all. But I fell in love with fishing because of my grandfather. And I remember that first day thinking, ‘This is cool, man—I got this boat, and one day me and my son and my daughter can come fish, and then an overwhelming sadness came over me.” 

While there’s a lot of introspection on Bluebird Days, there are moments of fun, evidenced on songs like “One Beer in Front of the Other” and the album’s opening track, “Damn Good Time.”

The album ends with the CMA award-winning, chart-topping Luke Bryan duet, “Buy Dirt,” which put some new pressure on the singer-songwriter. “There’s pressure, definitely,” he says in a statement. “It’s not about trying to recreate ‘Buy Dirt,’ but we can approach songs like we approached that one, and that’s to write something that people are going to feel, and not just hear…So, the best thing for me is that ‘Buy Dirt’ opened up a whole other lane of songs that I think people can really connect with.”

For Jordan Davis, Bluebird Days is an exceptional body of work, elevating him even further as a notch above the genre’s next class of superstars.

Walker County: ‘No Smoke and Mirrors’ – EP Review

Warner Music Nashville recording artists, Walker County are finally ready to make their major-label debut. The duo comprised of sisters, Ivy and Sophie Walker have been cultivating their artistry for years. Their brand new EP, No Smoke and Mirrors exemplifies that.

According to the songstresses, “’No Smoke and Mirrors’ is a look at every side of Walker County. We wanted to create an EP that represented the women we’ve grown to be through our 16 years of writing and playing music. You will hear us sing about love, heartbreak, good times and personal breakthroughs.”

The five song project kicks off with the song, “Stoned,” a taste of what’s to come on the rest of the project. “Mirror Mirror” is a slow-jam that features incredible story-telling lyrics. Any one who has ever dealt with self-esteem issues can relate to the heartfelt and honest song.

“Look her in the eyes and tell her she’s pretty // Give her a smile and let her know there ain’t thing she’s gotta change // Instead of breakin’ her hеart, maybe give her a brеak today // Mirror, mirror, I know you got a lot to say // You’ve seen every single tear // Now help her see the truth more clear // Mirror, mirror”

On “Between Boyfriends,” Walker County infuses more sass into their project. A perfect country anthem, the duo unapologetically sings about being a single lady in today’s landscape.

The sisters flip the script on the fourth song on the project, “Yours Tonight.” A more sentimental ballad, the single is the lyrical expression of what it’s like to want to be with someone that does not want all of you and just cannot commit.

“I’m not yours // Just yours tonight // I take whatever I can get // Even if it’s only this // And pretend that you’re mine // Keep believing that same old lie // It’s easy lying next to you // And it’s hard for mе to face the truth // That I’m not yours // Just yours tonight”

The record culminates with the touching song, “You and Jesus.” While every song on the project is clearly from their own life experiences, “You and Jesus” feels the most deeply personal. Walker County enlists the help of Greylan James on this fan-favorite track.

Overall, No Smoke and Mirrors is an exciting taste of what is to come for Walker County. Country fans should definitely keep them on their radar.

Kelsea Ballerini: ‘Rolling Up The Welcome Mat’ – EP Review

Country music is all about speaking the truth no matter what. In her surprise EP and short film called Rolling Up The Welcome Mat, Kelsea Ballerini is unapologetically speaking her truth. She gets candid about what led to her divorce, her actual marriage, and everything in between. While Ballerini always creates music that is relatable and personal, this new project is one of her best yet.

The six-track project features well-crafted songs. Three of the six songs were exclusively written by Ballerini, while the songstress enlists the help of her producer and fellow songwriter, Alysa Vanderheym on the other three. Each song unfolds into the next in a way that feels cohesive, perfect for the short film that accompanies the EP.

“The only way I’ve been able to handle my life since I was 12 was to write about it. Ironically, I started writing music because my parents got divorced; that was my therapy,” shared Ballerini. “These are six songs I wish I had last year. It’s about the complexities of the feelings you go through during a massive shift at a young age. Rolling Up the Welcome Mat was how I processed everything. It’s the way I got my feelings out of my body and heart and put them to music — which is the purest way I could’ve handled it.”

“Mountain With A View,” the first song on the project candidly shares Ballerini’s breaking point, while “Just Married” is a heartbreakingly beautiful song that depicts how it feels to go from the excitement of marriage to just going through the motions.

Similarly on “Penthouse,” Ballerini shares what it is like to have everything, but how nothing feels as it should. Lyrics like “We played the part five nights, but we were never there on the weekends, baby // We got along real nice, but when I left town, did you hate me?” Hinting at the truth of what was going on behind closed doors in Ballerini’s former marriage to fellow country music singer-songwriter, Morgan Evans.

The last two tracks, “Blindsided” and “Leave Me Again” are separated by an “Interlude,” which seems to define the moments between the privacy of the relationship to when the public found out. On “Blindsided,” Ballerini unblushingly shares her truth, responding almost directly to Evans’ song, “Over For You.”

Finally on “Leave Me Again,” Ballerini vows to never lose herself again in a relationship. While heartache is painful, she wants her fans to know that healing is possible. Rolling Up The Welcome Mat is a true masterpiece.

Matt Stell: ‘ONE OF US’ – EP Review

Multi-platinum recording artist, Matt Stell is sharing his latest project with country music fans. Today, the singer-songwriter released his brand new EP entitled ONE OF US featuring six songs that any music fan will find themselves relating to.

The EP kicks off with the title track, “One Of Us.” Written by James Barker, Travis Wood, Gavin Slate, and Jim McCormick, the new single is about all of the characters we encounter during our upbringing. Despite all the different places we have grown up in, the small-town dreams, headaches, and everything in between are all the same. In the chorus, Stell proclaims that we are all one in the same.

“We all talk a little small-town bunch of raised right-round-here kids keepin’ it country // We all know a little dirt road // 80-hour workload week never hurt nobody // One of us got a chain if you get stuck //  One of us got a cooler full of cold Bud in the back of his truck // And if that sounds like you then you might be one of us // Yeah, you might be one of us”

“Roots In This Ground” is a beautiful combination of love and nostalgia. Stell finds a way to create a story, amongst all the emotions he expresses in one of our favorite songs on the project.

The nostalgia continues on the next two tracks, “Shut The Truck Up” and “Man Made.” On the former, Stell laments about a break-up, something most of us can relate to. On “Man Made,” his radio single, Stell relies on incredible imagery and the desires we all have.

“All us boys wanna grow up, make our mamas proud // Find that girl who lifts us up when life gets us down // Behind any guy doing anything right is a woman’s work at hand // If a man made anything, it’s ’cause a woman made that man”

The EP explodes into a fun-loving song called “This One’s Gonna Hurt.” Written by heavy hitters, James McNair, Michael Hardy, Cameron Montgomery, and Tyler Hubbard, the song is a bright spot on the cohesive project. The record culminates with the clever and beautiful song, “Somewhere Over The Radio.” The single is an ode to country music and a true love letter to the whole experience. “Somewhere Over The Radio” might be the best on the project, or at least our personal favorite.

Overall, ONE OF US is a dreamy EP that feels cohesive, nostalgic, and 100% Matt Stell. Every country fan should give it a listen or two.
