NYCS First Impression: Tim McGraw ‘Here On Earth’

Tim McGraw Here On Earth

GRAMMY award-winning artist Tim McGraw is back with his 16th studio album. HERE ON EARTH is the superstar’s first solo project in five years since Damn Country Music and takes listeners through a journey of emotive experiences. His most recent project was released in 2017 and was a collaboration with wife Faith Hill titled The Rest of Our Life. Since then, McGraw has been releasing teasers about new music and the full project is finally here.

The title track “LA” opens with a resemblance to an 80s-synth track, sustaining that ambiance throughout the length of the track. The lyrics discuss the cliches of LA while mentally making you feel like you are in the city of angels.

“Chevy Spaceship” starts with a grainy space-launch message with extraterrestrial loops. It compliments a backing piano instrumentation and builds up as the song progresses. The title track “Here On Earth” contains a more uptempo offering than the previous two tracks and couples with “Hard To Stay Mad At” in terms of upbeat, feel-good songs.

“Sheryl Crow” glimpses at McGraw’s rock side and is a love song about the same nostalgic feelings felt about someone and feeling those same feelings hearing Sheryl Crow on the radio for the first time; almost the same perspective as Taylor Swift’s “Tim McGraw.” “7500 OBO” is an offering from today’s traditional country sound and in correlation with the album’s release, the singer released an acoustic version of the song on YouTube as well as a video for Hallelujahville.

Lead single “I Called Mama” serves as a reminder that comforting voices out there are available and one of the best things out there. He sings: “So I stopped off at a Texaco // Bought a Slim Jim and a Coke // Parked out by the water just to watch that river flow // Grabbed my guitar from the back seat // Wrote a song just for me // And I sung it for the blue sky // And a couple live oak trees // I thought of home, grabbed my phone from my pocket // And I called mama.”

Each track highlights the shared experiences that humans feel, something that is so needed during these uncertain times.

Jimmie Allen Releases Noteworthy Collaboration Project ‘Bettie James’

Jimmie Allen, Bettie James

With the exception of a few remixes and covers, fans of Jimmie Allen have not been given new music since his 2018 debut album Mercury Lane. Still, the “Best Shot” singer has maintained his spot in country music and has developed a devoted community through social media. With his growing fanbase, Bettie James is here to reintroduce Allen in a way that could not have been more anticipated, in the very best way: with a collaborative project.

With six, out of seven, unreleased tracks with entertainers such as Nelly, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, and more, Bettie James works as a mesh of creatively diverse tracks. There are feel-good, powerhouse songs, estranged love ballads, inspirational messages laid over music, and reflective lyrics that contemplate tragedy and, in another production, potential growth.

Bettie James was undoubtedly worth the wait, not only for Allen’s listeners but for country music as a whole. It showcases a grown, matured, and versatile artist who is capable of honesty and vulnerability as well as performing those country music classics that get people moving and grooving. Not only does it provide Allen with a chance to redefine himself in a multifaceted, cross-genre way, but the well-known contributors are able to play with their preferred style of music, too. For instance, “Made for These” practically demands Tim McGraw’s involvement since it walks the same line as McGraw’s 2004 hit, “Live Like You Were Dying”. Additionally, “Freedom Was A Highway” aligns with Brad Paisley’s high-esteemed inclinations to incorporate a dense, electric riff.

Further exploring a mix of genre-bending music from top to bottom, the album kicks off with the infectious and fan-favorite “Good Times Roll” featuring Nelly and ends with the final and seventh track, “This Is Us” featuring Noah Cyrus. Fans got a bit of an early taste for each of these two tracks. While the latter was released on its own in February, Allen also began including a sneak peek of “Good Times Roll” in his live show as early as December 2019. Check out the video below for a clip of the live performance.

Although, Bettie James in its entirety is a true gift, there are two notable pieces, and it would be a great disservice if “Drunk & I Miss You” and “Why Things Happen” were not specifically given the words, and the space, to officially discuss and acclaim. The former is with Mickey Guyton and the melody practically sends the listener into a dizzying mental state, as if a camera is rotating 360° around an object to cause chaos and confusion. It only adds to the anguish and desperation of the song, though the mixed feelings of honesty battled with alcohol-induced longing creates a conflicted, muddled mental state that allows the track to be what it is. And, it’s great.

“Why Things Happen”, with Charley Pride and Darius Rucker, takes on a more serious route with the lyrics searching for answers as to, well, why things happen as they do. It’s political, without having to get political. And, it’s an emotional, thought-provoking production that tugs at the heart-strings. With Rucker’s natural tremble in his voice and Pride’s established, rough yet muted tone intertwining with each other and echoing Allen, a full-blast exploratory creation is born that leaves us wanting more.

Bettie James is an epiphanic, significant and well-built project from Allen that takes you on a whirlwind of emotions in seven tracks, leaving you dazed and confused, in the very best way.

To keep up with Jimmie Allen, follow him on InstagramTwitter, and Facebook.

Bettie James is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Showing Appreciation for Moms, Tim McGraw Drops “I Called Mama”

Tim McGraw I Called Mama

Just in time for Mother’s Day weekend, Tim McGraw has released his new song, “I Called Mama” showing appreciation to mothers everywhere.

Written by Lance Miller, Marv Green, and Jimmy Yeary, “I Called Mama” shares the message that not only through the good times but also the bad, the people you love, no matter how far away they live will be there for you. If you are feeling down, don’t wait to pick up the phone. Call a loved one, and they will help make your world a little brighter. It’s a reminder that we all need to hear during these trying times.

“Grabbed my guitar from my back seat / Wrote a song just for me / And I sung it for the blue sky / And a couple live oak trees / I thought of home, grabbed my phone from my pocket / And I called mama.”

In a recent press release, the award-winning singer shared what this song means to him, “On the one hand this song is literally, ‘ hey call your mom.’ On the other hand, you look at a time like this, there are real hardships for everyone, and it’s a great reminder that hearing someone’s voice who knows you and loves you can help you get through anything. I think it’s at these very difficult times that music can help and the power of a song can give someone a moment of clarity or comfort, or just a smile. Especially now, when we seem to need it more than ever.”

To go along with the single, a lyric video has also been released featuring never-before-seen footage of McGraw and his mom. To make it even more special, the singer asked his fans to send in photos and videos of their moms. Watch below.

Throwback Thursday: Tim McGraw Songs You May Have Forgotten

Tim McGraw is one of the most recognizable country music superstars. With his unique voice, he managed to become known for his ability to stir up a wide range of emotions from heart-melting ballads to toe-tapping, dancehall tunes. As he once said in USA Today “There’s a lot of people who can pick up a guitar and sing you a great song, but there’s a very few people that can tell you how they feel. That’s the main purpose of acting or doing an opera or painting or anything. It’s to tell somebody how you feel and more importantly, tell them how they feel.”

In all of McGraw’s songs, this sentiment is undeniable especially in “It’s Your Love”, “Speak To a Girl”, “Don’t Take The Girl” or “Humble and Kind”.

With 15 studio albums, 21 singles to hit number one on the Billboard Hot Country 100 chart, 3 singles named the number one country song of the year (It’s Your Love, Just To See You Smile, and Live Like You Were Dying), 3 Grammys, 14 Academy of Country Music Awards and 3 People’s Choice Awards, McGraw is certainly one of the most decorated artists of our time. Here are a few songs that we love, that you may have forgotten about.

  1. Welcome To The Club –  This first song is for those who were dumped and broken-hearted.  “You gave her everything you thought she wanted/ Now all you want is gone/ you’re just one of many broken-hearted/ Wondering what went wrong/ Welcome to the club”

  1. Tears In The Rain  – While listening you can feel his sadness because his love might come back if she could see his tears in the rain. “Now, I’ll regret that moment ‘cause I didn’t let her know/ How much I still loved her, I was hopin’ it would show/ But the raindrops and the teardrops ran together on my face/ Now she’ll never ever know no one can take her place”

  1. The Great Divide – Sometimes an argument can lead to a great divide which is hard to overcome. The hole between two people can bo so deep that even if they want to bury it but the ground would still tender. “And it’s a long, long way/ Across the great divide/ The songs that they once sang/ Now echo far and wide/ They could still get back/ All the love that they have lost/ But only if they both will reach across/ ‘Cause it’s a long, long way to the other side/ Of the great divide”

  1. You Just Get Better All The Time – One of these songs where love is almost touchable and you can feel the affection. A wonderful piece of music. “You just get sweeter every day/ The little things you do and say/ If only you could see you through my eyes/ You just get better all the time”

  1. Senorita Margarita – When your heart is sad and you need someone to comfort you but the one you love is the cause of heartache you need senorita margarita. “Senorita, margarita I’m as lonesome as a man can be/ I still love her/ I still need her/ I’m just hoping you can comfort me/ I don’t want to do her wrong/ I don’t need somebody new/ I just can’t be alone tonight/ So senorita, margarita, let me hold you tight”

  1. Let Me Love You – A country song with a Latino vibe, now you’ve heard it all. It will make you sway to the rhythm and feel like a professional samba dancer.  “Show me what it is like to lose control/ Free the desire in your soul/ Oh oh let me love you/ Let me take you the place like nowhere else/ Show you the things you never felt/ oh oh let me love you”

  1. Home – There’s no place like home sweet home. Home is not just a building it’s much more, it’s feelings and memories. It’s almost like a time machine that can take you to happy and simple times. “Later on we’ll sit around/ Bellies tight from supper/ telling all them stories/ That we just can’t get enough of/ And somewhere in an honest laugh/ It’ll finally hit me that I’m/ Home”

  1. Old Town New – a blue song because of the painful past. A Town, people, and places remind of a failed relationship that’s why you have to make old town new. “Color other than blue again/ I would have something to do again/ Instead of thinking about you again/ But the people I know/ The places I go/ Remind me of you/ Oh, somebody came around/ And make this old town new”

  1. Open Season On My Heart“I can’t blame anyone but me/ This reckless fool I’ve come to be/ My tired excuses just don’t fit/ It don’t look good from where I sit/ I’ve tried to change without much luck/ I reached the point where I get stuck/ I hit the streets and the fireworks start/ It’s open season on my heart”

  1. Forever Seventeen Letting go of past experiences and moving on in life is easier to say than to do it and contemplating life choices and past is effortless but not painless. That’s why we should remember that we’re not flawless, we make mistakes and past is the past. “A reckless lover, a father figure/ You search for both in every man you meet/ You’re not a mother ad sometimes you wonder/ if a son or daughter just might make you feel complete/ But no, you don’t need someone else/ No, it’s hard enough to learn to love yourself”

McGraw’s ability to hone in on all kinds of emotions through songs makes him really special, one of the kind. He performed many memorable songs and sang many amazing lesser-known tracks that will stay in the hearts of his most devoted fans.

way down tim mcgraw

Tim McGraw has sold more than 50 million records worldwide and dominated the singles charts spanning decades with a stunning 43 #1 singles. Recently, McGraw has been teasing new music over the past year with singles including “Neon Church” and “Thought About You”, which is currently climbing up the charts. While making hints at a new album, he has been traveling all over the world playing festivals and shows for fans. This morning he released his new single “Way Down” featuring Shy Carter. The new single talks about everything you have way down south. Between Elvis, Ole Miss, Georgia girls, and Memphis heat, McGraw gives an ode to the south.

Who Is Lori McKenna? The Story Behind Her Journey to Country Music

Who is Lori McKenna? The songwriter joined us to chat about her journey to country music. Get to know the superstar here…

Lori McKenna

The Beginning:

Our Swag Spotlight this week is not a rising artist but an established, veteran songwriter responsible for some of the most prolific and important songs in our generation of country music. Lori McKenna was born and raised in Massachusets and still resides there today with her husband whom she married when she was 19 years old. Growing up the youngest of six children, McKenna’s family were all musical whether they sang, played in a band or wrote songs, she was immersed in the musical culture from a very young age. She jokes as she tells us that in her house it was “Jesus and James Taylor”. Other musical influences included Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Carly Simon, and Carole King to name a few, always leaning heavily into the singer-songwriter genre.

“I have the strangest voice in my family, all of my siblings can sing really pretty, what happened to me?” she laughs. “I learned over the years that even though it’s different, least I have a distinctive voice.” When she was 13 her older brother who loved to write songs taught her that once she learned three chords, she could write music and so she did. “I always wrote songs as a means of therapy, some people have a journal, instead I would write a song.”

She married Gene, whom she met in the third grade and they had three children very quickly, her eldest is now 20. She explains that it wasn’t until her third child was born that she ever even thought about letting the world hear her music. She went to open mic nights and made a record, Bittertown, which is celebrating it’s 15th anniversary this year. “I just kept following it, I always followed my music, it was always luckily a step ahead of me,” she tells us. “I battled with confidence issues, I didn’t know I was worthy of doing it outside of my house, for the most part, I’ve been so lucky that it sort of pulled me. I tell my kids to stick their neck out, even if it sounds stupid, they should try it anyway.”

The Turning Point:

The turning point in her career was Bittertown when songs from that album were pitched around Nashville, and Faith Hill decided to cut four of them. Although she didn’t grow up listening to country music, she completely understood why her lyrics identified with that audience and landed her a publishing deal in Nashville. She credits Music City with giving her some of her very best friends, the people that she co-writes all of her music with.

Today:

Now a mother of five children, McKenna made the poignant decision to keep her family together and not uproot everyone to move to Nashville. “I realized a few years back, the benefit for me and not living in Nashville is, I’m not an everyday writer, I have tons of friends that write every day, my brain just doesn’t work that way,” she laughs. “The benefit for me is, I’ve never for one second had any sort of bitterness towards the town of Nashville or the music that is created there. Every time I show up, I get off the plane and I am so excited to be there and to get in a writing room and it’s really like I get to have the best of both worlds”.

In the fifteen years since her life changed forever, McKenna has won two Grammy awards and has made history. In 2016, she became the first woman ever to win the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year two years in a row. Those two songs were “Girl Crush” which was written with Hillary Lindsey and Liz Rose and recorded by Little Big Town and “Humble and Kind” which McKenna wrote alone in her pajamas in her home in Massachusets which was later recorded by Tim McGraw. The former was written one morning in Nashville, watch the songwriters tell the story below in Opry’s series “The Write Stuff”.

McKenna says later that day they had a co-write with Kimberly and Karen from Little Big Town and when they told them about their “weird” new song, they absolutely loved it. “The five of us were just sitting there and I looked around at the room and I was teasing and I said, ‘Oh my God, I’m the only one here without a Grammy’ and Karen said, ‘Lori McKenna, we’re going to get you a Grammy’. Sure enough, at the 2016 Grammy awards, the song won for Best Country Duo/Group Performance as well as Song of the Year, winning McKenna her first Grammy award. “To have that experience with them [Hilary and Lindsey] was such a Godsend, they had done it before, they knew the process and I was experiencing this really surreal thing with my two best friends,” she explains.

The latter, “Humble and Kind” had quite a different start. McKenna tells us how she dropped her kids off at school one morning, came back to an empty house and sat around in her pajamas, essentially making a list of all of the things she and her husband would want their kids to know and what they tell them over and over again as well as those smaller things that you don’t verbalize. She sang it into her iPhone and emailed it to Tim McGraw, who immediately knew he wanted to record it. “When he was telling me about all of these ideas he had for it, once he had recorded it like the music video, I couldn’t believe it,” she admits. “I was like what is he doing with this song, it’s not some big moment, it’s just a tiny little prayer for five little kids, then when I saw what he created from it, in a million ways that song would not be what it is if it wasn’t for Tim, for what he did, the vision he had for it was so much bigger than I ever would have imagined. “

The song also went on to win a Grammy for Best Country Song as well as McKenna’s second year in a row winning Song of the Year at the CMA Awards. For country fans who love McGraw’s version, be sure to listen to McKenna’s version below, which really emulates the simple little prayer and poem she initially thought of when writing it.

In celebration of Bittertown’s 15th anniversary, McKenna just wrapped up her Return to Bittertown Tour and released two of the standouts from the project, “Stealing Kisses” and “Bible Songs”. We caught her stop at Subculture late last month and we were mesmerized by the songstress and her legendary delivery of her music.

90s Country Songs That You Forgot Were Your Jam

Everybody loves a good 90s hit and the decade sure has many great ones to offer. Between Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee”, Shania Twain’s “Any Man Of Mine”, Brooks and Dunn’s “Brand New Man”, and many, many more, there are endless opportunities to add to your playlist. With all that the ’90s country scene has to offer, there can be a few gems that get lost. That is why we have compiled a list of ’90s hits you forgot were your total jam.

“That Ain’t My Truck” – Rhett Atkins

“That Ain’t My Truck” is a song that everybody knows and hits those heartbreak feels. The ACM Songwriter of the Year may not be making any more of his own music but he has been pinning chart-toppers including Jason Aldean’s “When She Says Baby,” Thomas Rhett’s “It Goes Like This,” Dustin Lynch’s “Small Town Boy,” Luke Bryan’s “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day” and more. All of these hit songs still have a sense of Atkin’s original emotional appeal to them just like in the ’90s.

“Amazed” – Lonestar

Released just weeks before the ’90s were over, Lonestar’s biggest hit proved there can be a large crossover between genres. One of the few country songs to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during that time puts it on the list.

“She’s In Love With the Boy” – Trisha Yearwood

Music videos help bring a song to life although Trisha Yearwood’s “She’s In Love With the Boy” music video knocks it out of the park. With big hair, big mustaches, innocent themes, and irresistible melodies, this song is a huge success.

“Blue Clear Sky” – George Strait

While “Check Yes or No” and “Give It Away” are added most of the time, The King of Country’s “Blue Clear Sky” is still a clear hit. In fact, it was the number one song for a month straight!

“Pickup Man” – Joe Diffie

Many artists these days credit Joe Diffie for being an influence on their style of music so it is only fitting we include one of his popular songs. The double entendre of the song title plays out as he is always winning over the women. He barely even tries, as his new ride always gets attention in traffic jams and drive-in movies on Friday nights.

“Daddy’s Money” – Ricochet

This song is perfect to play when you see the right someone at the bar, at a party, or on the lake. “She’s got her daddy’s money, her mama’s good looks / More laughs than a stack of comic books,” Ricochet sings. While Ricochet had very little success, this song will live on for many more years to come.

“I Like It, I Love It” – Tim McGraw

McGraw’s third hit single is filled with cheesy silly lyrics and a catchy melody although it perfectly describes what someone in the singer’s shoes would do. The second it comes on the radio, you can’t help but start singing to it. As a matter of fact, you probably started singing along before you even knew the words. Between the fiddle and barroom piano and McGraw’s Southern drawl, you are hooked upon first listen.

“This Kiss” – Faith Hill

“This Kiss” is a perfect encapsulation of all the joy and romantic giddiness of a newfound love. Maybe Hill was taking notes from McGraw on tour? Either way, few songs can achieve such high levels of catchiness like this song and it continues to be one of Hill’s greatest hits.

“Independence Day” – Martina McBride

“Independence Day” won a CMA Song of the Year title in 1995, and it certainly pushed McBride to the front of the pack. Her vocal talent made this ’90s singer’s first statement song a hit. Despite its success, many radio stations were uncertain whether they would play the controversial anthem. Its story of a woman’s struggle against abuse is powerful, showcasing a realistic view of how it can torment its victims. Although it only reached #12 on Billboard’s singles chart, the song reached a wide audience and received much critical acclaim.

“Fast as You” – Dwight Yoakam

“Fast as You” is one of Yoakam’s last country hits, and it’s a standout on this list. The Kentucky native’s drawl and outlaw style were mixed with a pop influence created a swaggering tune that you could recognize upon only the first few beats.

“Watermelon Crawl” – Tracy Byrd

“Watermelon Crawl” was a classic ’90s line dance favorite in any honky-tonk across the country. The song is full of great imagery that the listener can follow as it describes the adventures of a man who pulls off the road in a small town in Georgia. Everything this festival has to offer screams country; live music, seed spitting, an eating contest, and red wine made from watermelons. It’s pure, simple country music.

“Every Light In The House Is On” – Trace Adkins

Last but certainly not least, Trace Adkins’ somber ballad. The ’90s hit tells the story of a man missing an ex-lover and it is just as emotional as it is beautiful. Adkins tapped into this song and truly told of heartache in a new and unique way that was not being exposed in the songwriting world just yet.
