Mitchell Tenpenny I Love New York

Our ‘I Love New York’ Series features artists in the country music community taking over our Instagram Story each week to give us the Top 5 Things they love most about New York City.

This week, singer-songwriter, Mitchell Tenpenny, who just released his latest single, “Broken Up” took over to give his Top 5 Picks in the personalized videos here on Instagram Highlights plus a rundown below.

#5 – Flight Club, NYC

Tenpenny kicks off his Top 5 Picks with a big shoutout to Flight Club, the famed quintessential vintage sneaker store. Specifically mentioning and showing his favorite pair, The Jordan Grape 5’s, adding “Flight Club in NYC is one of my favorite places in the world for the sneaker game, you can’t really beat this shoe.”

#4 – Bloomingdale’s

Next up, Tenpenny includes Bloomingdale’s as his #4 pick while showing one of his favorite purchases right from his closet, “We don’t have a Bloomingdale’s in Nashville, but in New York they do and this is one of my favorite jackets,” he adds while pulling out a green and camo jacket.

#3 – Webster Hall, NYC

One of the city’s oldest event and performance venues, Webster Hall, takes Tenpenny’s # 3 spot. “Webster Hall was our very first sell-out EVER headlining New York City, and we got these Himalayan salt shot glasses, we put a lot of tequila in them. I’ll never forget that night, what a great night. Cheers!” Tenpenny adds while reflecting on the special show. Check out a full recap of the show along with an exclusive interview here.

#2 – Bobby Van’s Steakhouse, NYC

Including his favorite restaurant in the # 2 spot,  Tenpenny adds “Bobby Can’s Steakhouse” to his Top 5 Picks. “Best service, best steak… it’s just one of those places, when you land you have to go straight there,” he says.

#1 – Jersey Collecting — NY Giants Authentic Ron Dayne Jersey

Tenpenny’s #1 Pick for his Top 5 Things he loves about NYC in our ‘I Love New York’ Series is: his NY Giants Ron Dayne Jersey. Pulling the special item from his closet to hold up for the camera, Tenpenny says “I’m a huge jersey guy, I collect them all the time and on my very first trip to New York City, I got myself an authentic Ron Dayne jersey. That’s a throwback, baby! If you’re a true New York fan, you know what that is. Cheers, y’all!”

Mitchell Tenpenny Gets Honest On New Track “Broken Up”

Mitchell Tenpenny Broken Up

We have been championing Mitchell Tenpenny, since before his record deal, before his number one hit, and before his headlining tour, and we are so proud to continue to do so. Tenpenny has made quite the career for himself, while still maintaining his integrity and his own sound. Today, the singer-songwriter released his newest track entitled “Broken Up.”

One of the most intriguing things about Tenpenny is the distinct tone of his voice, which resonates throughout all his music. “Broken Up” has that special quality, where you know, instantly, that it is Tenpenny singing. Lyrically, the song is about a guy who feels that he has made the wrong decision by breaking up with his girlfriend. In a unique twist on a traditional break-up song, Tenpenny finds a way to evoke honesty, pain, and reality by telling the story of the person, who does the breaking up rather than the other way around.

But baby I’m still broken up about it / Yeah, I’ve had it up to here, had enough about it / Maybe I will up about it / Yeah, but only if I drink until I’m drunk about it / I wish that I could say that I’ll be fine / But baby I’m still broken up about it”

The new song follows suit with the likes of tracks from his debut record Telling All My Secrets, but this one elevates Tenpenny’s unique talent and vocals. We suspect that this new single is going to be another big hit with the fans!

Mitchell Tenpenny Covers Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved”

Someone You Loved Mitchell

Mitchell Tenpenny is utilizing his time methodically using isolation to knead his musical adaptations like a handful of other musicians during this time.

The country singer + songwriter has been using his days of peace to live stream on his social media platforms to sing originals, spin cover songs, and answer illuminated questions sent in from fans. Additionally, he recorded a cover of pop sensation Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” as apart of his #TenpennyTuesdays series.

Tenpenny’s rendition compliments the original immensely. It maintains the authentic piano instrumentation commemorating Tenpenny’s mighty vocal competence. The emotional complexity is significant as if the singer + songwriter penned the song himself.

A few weeks ago, Tenpenny provided some comedic relief on his Instagram account sharing the story, “I’ve always been afraid of the unexpected even when I expect it.” The singer then apprehensively makes way to a trash can in his backyard stating, “So, I got this squirrel in my trash can, and I need to put stuff in my trash can, so I just figured I’d film this. I’m probably going to scream.” The video ends precipitously, Tenpenny screams and the squirrel lives happily ever after.

Professionally during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the “Drunk Me” singer released a feel-good, “driving around with the windows down” single “Here” which followed up the singer’s “Can’t Go To Church.” He was also one of the many artists who was supposed to perform at the Country to Country Festival in the UK but got cut because of the pandemic. He shared on Instagram, “We flew all the way to beautiful London and had to immediately get on another plane and head back to the United States,” he wrote in a post on March 12. “We are flying back now. I can’t express to y’all how excited we were to finally have the opportunity to play your amazing city and to see the amazing country music fans the world has to offer. I promise we will get back as soon as we can! But for now be smart be safe and f— this stupid Corona Virus! Love y’all.”

Mitchell Tenpenny Appreciates Every Moment in “Here”

Here Mitchell Tenpenny

One of our favorite new artists, Mitchell Tenpenny has made his mark on country music over the past several years, releasing tracks full of relatable lyrics and highlighting his signature growly voice. During the uncertain times the world is facing, Tenpenny is back this time with a song that isn’t about love or losing it, rather about making the most of the time we have left, “Here”.

A sweet change of pace for the singer-songwriter, “Here”, an uptempo bop examines the passage of time and how to take each moment and never take a single heartbeat for granted.

“I wanna go too far, I wanna play too hard / I wanna live it up cause I know I only got so many years / I wanna lose myself, in someone else / I wanna feel it all, do everything I wanna, while I’m here”

We can already picture blasting this one while we finally drive around with the windows open, or holding a beer up to cheers our friends during live concert season this summer. If this pandemic can teach us anything it is to truly live each moment fully, appreciate the little moments, and “get that peace of mind thing figured out”.

Tenpenny is joining Jason Aldean on his summer leg of the We Back Tour. For tickets and tour dates click here.

New Music From Mitchell Tenpenny, “Can’t Go to Church”

By Briana Lopez

Can't Go To Church Mitchell Tenpenny

One of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Mitchell Tenpenny has released his new single, fan-favorite “Can’t Go To Church”. The track, written by Jordan Schmidt, Matt Rogers, and Mitchell Tenpenny, has become a staple in his live show, introducing fans to brand new music over the past few months.

The song was inspired by Tenpenny’s high school heartbreak experience. During a video of him performing the song at The Listening Room in Nashville last year, he gives a back story of what it was like growing up for him, “Growing up we all went to the same churches. We went to school all week long and then saw each other at church.”

Tenpenny then goes on to explain his feelings during the break-up, “You break up with somebody and I was like, I need a break, I don’t want to go to church any more right now because I know I’m going to see her…. I didn’t want to see her dress up, I didn’t want to see her family, I didn’t want to go to church and did what I normally did and praise God because my heart was so broken.”

The chorus of the song explains exactly what Tenpenny was feeling in that moment, and his lyrics are so poetic you feel the pain that he’s feeling and you start to reminisce that somberness with him.

“I ain’t trying to avoid that place/ I don’t know what else to do/ I don’t want to see her face sitting in the front pew/ I’ll still do my praying but I’ll do it somewhere else/ Ain’t it crazy how an angel dragged a man through hell/ Well I know Sunday morning she’ll come walking through that door so Lord forgive me/ But I can’t go to church anymore”

The song has a lot to do with the healing that a person tries to accomplish after a break-up. Sometimes that means cutting stuff out that reminds you of that person and for Tenpenny it was holding back from his routine life and traditions even if it meant that he had to find a different way to fix his heart.

“No, it ain’t fair that we gotta share the same place where everybody does their healing/ But if she’s in there I’ll just stare/ And I won’t hear a thing that preachers preaching”

Fans have been anxiously waiting for this song to be released while receiving teases via Tenpenny’s social media accounts. In our interview with the singer-songwriter from last month, he told us that he just loves getting new music out to the fans and that they can expect a ton of new music in 2020. Swag Session Update: Mitchell Tenpenny

Back in December of 2017, we interviewed Mitchell Tenpenny in the middle of Times Square after he performed two songs, “Bitches” and “Truck I Drove In High School”. Since then he has gone on to sign a record deal with Riser House/Sony Music Nashville, release his debut album, Telling All My Secrets and successfully headline his own tour. Before the final show of 2019 for Tenpenny, a sold-out show in NYC at Webster Hall, he performed his latest single “Anything She Says” and we caught up about what plans he has for 2020.

Mitchell Tenpenny & Seaforth Close out 2019 with Sold Out NYC Show

Mitchell Tenpenny New York City

Mitchell Tenpenny & Team at Webster Hall, NYC

Last night, New Yorkers filled up the room at Webster Hall in New York City for the final show on the rising artist, Mitchell Tenpenny’s ‘Anything She Says Tour’ featuring exciting new duo, Seaforth. The sold-out show was the perfect way to cap off an awesome season of country music concerts, as we head into the new year.

Check out our interview with Seaforth just before the show in the video above

One of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Seaforth were tasked with warming up the crowd. They exploded on to the stage, singing songs off their debut EP, including “Talk to Me,” “Good and Gone,” and “Taken Your Picture.” They even included an incredible cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” which showed off their vocal range, as well as, some unreleased tunes like “Colorblind.” In between songs, the duo entertained the audience with their humor, wit, and infectious personalities.

“We love Mitchell man. This is the first-ever U.S. tour that we’ve ever been on. We’ve become friends with Mitchell. Thank you guys for being here early,” the duo shared, just before joking, “Can you make some noise if you have no idea who we are?! We’re called Seaforth!” Of course, they went on to end their thirty-minute set with a crowd-pleasing sing-along to their debut single “Love That,” making sure to convert each and every person in that room a fan if they weren’t already!

Just before performing for his sold-out audience, Mitchell Tenpenny joined
NYCountry Swag for a special performance + interview. Check it out and the video above.

After a brief intermission, headliner, Mitchell Tenpenny took the stage, accompanied by his band, which includes his younger brother, Rafe. The show was definitely a departure from our 2017 Swag Session, where Times Square was the backdrop to his performance! Kicking things off right away, the singer immediately performed two catchy songs off his debut record, “Somebody Ain’t You” and “Goner.”

“This is so fucking awesome. Thank you for being here with us. This means the world. It’s our last night of the tour of this year. Thank you for selling this place out. This is so cool man, for real, this is really my dream, thanks to you guys. I’m so, so grateful for that,” Tenpenny expressed just before singing his old-school song, the clever “Mixed Drinks” followed by “Truck I Drove In High School.” Fans showed their appreciation for his talent by singing the lyrics back to him.

Tenpenny continued to keep fans on their toes, performing a mix of more songs off Telling All My Secrets like “I Get the Picture” and “Somebody’s Got Me” and unreleased songs that are slated to come out in 2020. He performed both “Can’t Go to Church Anymore” and a song he wrote with one of our favorites, HARDY called “To Us It Did.” According to the entertainer, the former is about “Growing up in a small town, where everyone goes to the same church. If you break up with someone, what’s the first thing you want to do?! You want to avoid seeing them at all costs. You go to the same church, well guys, where are you going to see them?!” Clearly, the song resonated with fans, who cheered when it ended.

Although the set was filled with highlights, there were two standout moments that were starkly different from one another. The first came when Tenpenny brought Seaforth back to the stage to sing their brand new single to country radio and tour namesake, “Anything She Says”. The performance was not only entertaining but hysterical, as the men through blow-up Judy dolls into the audience as they sang. “Anything She Says” is clearly a hit in the making!

NYCountry Swag’s Stephanie Wagner & Christina Bosch with Mitchell Tenpenny

The other standout was one of the most heartfelt moments of the night. The singer vulnerably shared his own life experiences with the audience. “We lost our daddy to cancer. That’s why I wrote this song. Cause our daddy never turned us away from any of the dreams we ever had. He let us pursue this crazy thing called music and y’all have given it a reality,” he explained, “I know my daddy’s watching down on us thanks to you guys, so thank you so much. I just want to dedicate this to anyone who’s lost anybody; I don’t care if it’s a family member, a friend, or someone you barely know. It affects everyone differently. Don’t let anyone tell you how to grieve.” Tenpenny went on to sing the poignant “Walk Like Him” with just his brother sharing the stage with him.

Mitchell Tenpenny’s “Bitches” with a little help from NYC

The singer-songwriter wrapped up his show with the infectious, “Alcohol You Later”, his debut number one single “Drunk Me”, and the crowd-favorite “Bitches”, leaving fans in Manhattan in awe of the incredible night of music that they were just a part of. As fans of Tenpenny for such a long time, it was outstanding to see the sold-out New York City fanbase not only singing along to his major hits, but to every lyric of every album cut, including songs that were released prior to his album. We look forward to watching big things continue to happen for one of our day one artists.

Devin Dawson Premieres His Version of “Truck I Drove In High School’

Devin Dawson My Take Truck

While we anxiously wait for more new music, singer-songwriter Devin Dawson is putting his own spin on some of our favorite songs that he has penned for other artists. Back in July, he released his version of Blake Shelton’s “God’s County,” which fans automatically gravitated towards. And just last week, Dawson announced his new project, a video series showcasing his rendition of songs he has written for other artists. He officially released the first video in the series last week singing Mitchell Tenpenny’s “Truck I Drove In High School.”

“I thought it would be cool to record more songs I’ve written for other artists… but from my perspective,” shared Dawson in a recent press release. Filmed in his signature black and white, Dawson continues to stay true to his “Dark Horse” mentality in his reimagined rendition. The stripped-down version features the singer in a dark and moody room, sitting on a stool with his guitar. Despite the ambiance, the usually serious looking vocalist lets a few smiles slip out, as he played the song.

Dawson’s version feels personal, nostalgic, and emotive. Although we love Tenpenny’s version too, the juxtaposition of Dawson’s laid-back rendition is equally as fresh and cool. Tenpenny even shared on his Instagram that he almost didn’t want to record the song because of how much he loved Dawson’s demo. Check out our Swag Session with Mitchell Tenpenny from 2017 where he played the track for us in the middle of Times Square.

According to Dawson, “MY TAKE is a vehicle to show songs that have been really important to [him] before releasing new music; it is really inspiring to get back to the songs that I loved that maybe weren’t 100% me at the time,” adding, “recording them was freeing and fun and I hope my fans dig MY TAKE on these songs as much as I do.” It will be interesting to see how other songs on the ‘MY TAKE’ project match up against the originals!

The California native will be touring throughout Europe this October, returning to the United States in the latter half of the month as a supporting act on Kip Moore’s ‘Room to Spare: Acoustic Tour.” For tickets and more information head to devindawsonmusic.com.
