Dierks Bentley: ‘Broken Branches’ – Album Review

Dierks Bentley’s new album, Broken Branches is out now, June 13th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new album below.

With a career spanning more than two decades, Dierks Bentley has been one of country music’s most well-known and consistent voices. Now, the acclaimed singer-songwriter is back with Broken Branches, one of his best offerings to date.

On the 11 track collection, the Arizona native trusted the process, enlisting some of Nashville’s most well-known songwriters and musicians to build out the project. On the Capitol Records Nashville release, Bentley co-wrote four songs, focusing on acquiring the best songs possible from the likes of Ashley Gorley, Ross Copperman, Seth Ennis, Devin Dawson, Jordan Reynolds, and more

Executive produced by Mary Hilliard Harrington, Bentley crafted a project that tells the tales of country music. “The country music community has a lot of broken branches in it. That’s why we’re all here,” Bentley explains in a statement. “We want to do something a little bit different, and I think everyone sees themselves like that – certainly in country. This is the people’s music and it represents that spirit of individuality so well – it’s just about doing it our own way.”

The album opens with “Cold Beer Can,” featuring Stephen Wilson, Jr. It’s classic Bentley, clever lyrics over a catchy melody with a hint of a message. “What I love about this song is that the title and idea seem like such familiar territory for country music, but when you actually dig into the lyrics of the song, it’s much more meaningful,” said Bentley.

“A cold beer can go further than a dollar // 12-pack peace pipe for the blue collar // Worth more than a silver when it changes hands // Money can’t buy what a cold beer can // Worth more than a silver when it changes hands // No, money can’t buy what a cold beer can”

“Jesus Loves Me” is a rock-tinted and smoky look at trading the bottle for the Bible, musing “Yeah Jesus loves me, but she don’t,” while “She Hates Me” is an almost Offspring-esque tongue-in-cheek lack-of-love song that shows Bentley at his best. He’s an antihero who isn’t going to be beat down by a woman who doesn’t quite like him.

“We were goofing around with this idea before diving into our next ‘serious’ song, really just trying to make each other laugh. It just fell out, and I didn’t think much more about it after that,” Bentley explained in a statement. “But then it really came to life in the studio, and then my kids were requesting it and then I was getting texts from friends who had heard it, so I started taking it more seriously! I love any opportunity to laugh at myself – especially my younger self, and ‘She Hates Me’ definitely provides that.”

“She hates me // My hair, my truck, my dog, my music makes her crazy // She done been there, done that, ain’t coming back, // no maybes Thought one day, // we’d be on some acres raising babies // She should be falling, only problem is she hates me”

As with any Bentley album, love is a permeating theme, notably on songs like “Something Worth Fixing,” “Standing in the Sun,” and “Never You,” which features vocals from Miranda Lambert. The Lambert duet is a sparse and twangy tale in the vein of country’s most quintessential duets, while “Sun” is a gorgeous building ballad comparing love to basking in the glow of someone you love.

“This is one of those songs that I never in a million years could have written on my own, but I’m so glad someone in this town did and gave me temporary custody of it for awhile,” said Bentley. “Love is such a classic theme in country music, but Kyle was able to write it in a way that is so personal to me…it’s the way I feel it. And, I love how sonically it builds to feel like a sunrise, tying back to the lyric of the song.”

“Well Well Whiskey” is an immediate standout, a Bluegrass-laden lyrically clever anthemic ode to whiskey. “When I first heard ‘Well Well Whiskey,’ it made me think of my Up On the Ridge album, which leaned heavily on the power of acoustic instruments. I heard a lot of the same opportunity for the guys in the studio to contribute ideas and collaborate together in the same spirit of that earlier project,” Bentley explains. “There is nothing more fun than turning the musicians loose on a track like this and seeing what they come up with. I definitely see this one making it into our live show this summer.”

The album’s title track perfectly encapsulates the album, featuring vocals from country legend John Anderson and rising superstar Riley Green. It’s an earworm celebration of bromance and throwing one back. In a similar vein, “For as Long as I Can Remember” celebrates what a son takes from his father and the other men in his family.

“Off the Map” finds him escaping reality for somewhere simpler, while the album’s closing track, “Don’t Cry for Me” sends the album out on a poignant note. Bentley couldn’t be happier with the life he’s led, noting “Don’t cry for me when I’m gone, Heaven knows I’ve had one hell of a run.”

On Broken Branches, Dierks Bentley takes a look at all of the different broken branches that make up life and love, doing so in a way that’s equal parts tongue-in-cheek and poignant. It’s truly Bentley at his finest.

  1. Cold Beer Can (Jon Randall, Luke Dick, Stephen Wilson Jr. and Dierks Bentley)

Dierks Bentley Shares New Song “She Hates Me”

Dierks Bentley shares new song, “She Hates Me,” available now, February 14th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

Dierks Bentley is basically synonymous with country music at this point in his long-lasting career. He has given fans songs to catalog their lives to; however, Bentley has a cheeky, funny quality to him and to his music that we just cannot get enough of. Today, in honor of Valentine’s Day, the entertainer shares a new song called, “She Hates Me.”

The new song is a light-hearted break-up song that is perfectly timed for the holiday. The new track features Bentley’s patented style of country with a mischievous edge. His country-boy charm is in full effect, as he tries to win the affection of a girl who, well, hates him.

“She’s an angel like if L.A. was a town in Tennessee // And she’d be mine except for just one little thing // She hates me // My hair, my truck, my dog, my music makes her crazy // She done been there, done that, ain’t coming back, no maybes // Thought one day we’d be on some acres raising babies // She should be falling, only problem is // She hates me”

Dierks Bentley is one of the most clever and creative artists of our generation. “She Hates Me” and the accompanied music video are awesome representations of that.

Dierks Bentley Shares His Rendition of “American Girl”

Dierks Bentley shares his new rendition of Tom Petty’s iconic song, “American Girl,” available on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

There are many artists in music history that are celebrated by today’s best artists. One of those artists is Tom Petty. In the forthcoming tribute album to Petty called Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty, due out June 21st, country artists are joining forces to pay homage to the many iconic songs Petty has released over the years. Superstar, Dierks Bentley lends his voice to the classic song, “American Girl.”

In a recent press release, Bentley shared “Petty’s southern roots shined through across his songwriting and storytelling. He might not have ever been considered as country, but you can’t go into a bar in Nashville without hearing this song”. Adding, “It is one of the greatest songs in a life’s work of great American songs. The spirit of this woman, the idea of such relentless hope – and disappointment – ignites such a spark. Jon and I were driven to make that feeling of American roots stand tall.”

Bentley recently took to Good Morning America for a live performance of the iconic track. Check out the full performance below.

“Well, she was an American girl // Raised on promises // She couldn’t help thinkin’ that there // Was a little more to life somewhere else // After all, it was a great big world // With lots of places to run to // And if she had to die tryin’, she // Had one little promise she was gonna keep // Oh yeah, alright // Take it easy, baby // Make it last all night // Yeah, she was an American girl”

Bentley’s rendition of “American Girl” pays homage to the classic, while still feeling reminiscent of Bentley’s signature sound. Fans of both Petty and Bentley will appreciate this new rendition!

While country radio is known for playing hit after hit, it is always exciting to see what song hits the number one spot each week. This week, Dierks Bentley’s latest single, “Gold” is the number one song on the charts. “Gold,” is the title track of Bentley’s tenth studio album and marks his 22nd number one single, following his collaboration with HARDY and BRELAND, “Beers On Me.”

Over the years, Bentley has fine-tuned his musical style, delivering simple, yet perfectly elevated songs that are clearly influenced by 90s and folk music. “Gold” is one of those songs. A true embodiment of simple living, “Gold” showcases Bentley at his best. Fans seem to agree.

“I’ve been climbin’, tryin’ to get to the view // I’m at the bottom but the sky’s still pretty damn blue // They say heaven is somewhere on the other side // But I ain’t waitin’, hell, I’m thinkin’, it’s a state of mind // I got some rust on my Chevy but it’s ready to roll // I got a rhinestone sky and a song in my soul // It ain’t a smooth ride, life, it’s a winding road // Yeah, it might be gravel, but it feels like gold // Yeah, it feels like gold // Yeah, it feels like gold”

Here Are All of Dierks Bentley’s Number One Songs in His Catalog

Here are all of Dierks Bentley’s number one songs on country radio in his music catalog. The singer-songwriter has 22 number ones to his name.

We love reminiscing about all of the great country music to hit country radio over the last few years. In our brand new series, we’re looking back on the songs that made it to the top of the country airplay charts. Today, we’re highlighting songs in Dierks Bentley’s career that hit the number one spot.

“What Was I Thinkin” – Dierks Bentley, 2003

Dierks Bentley’s debut single to country radio, “What Was I Thinkin'” hit number one less than five months after its release; an impressive feat for a young artist. Its fun story and high energy make this a timeless classic.

“Come A Little Closer” – Modern Day Drifter, 2005

Not particularly known for love ballads, Bentley’s second number one is a romantic melody about letting physical love fix all the problems and worries in a relationship.

“Settle for a Slowdown” – Modern Day Drifter, 2005

Bentley sings about how depressing it was to watch his girl drive away for good. He hopes to see brake lights but knows it’s not likely, so he would be happy just to see her slow down and consider turning around.

“Every Mile a Memory” – Long Trip Alone, 2006

Every country singer has at least one song about driving in a truck; this is Bentley’s. He sings about how every mile he drove reminded him of a time with his ex. He should be in awe looking at the western sunset or the stars in the Texas sky, but all he thinks about is her.

“Free And Easy (Down the Road I Go)” – Long Trip Alone, 2006

In this bluegrass hit, Bentley reminds us that as long as the sun is shining and you have clothes on your back, everything is going to be alright. You only have one life to live, so you should not spend it worrying about what the future holds.

“Feel That Fire” – Feel That Fire, 2009

The title track off his 4th studio album, “Feel That Fire” is about a reckless girl who acts on instinct and likes to live on the edge. Although she has a wild exterior, she longs for a real lover who makes her feel needed.

“Sideways” – Feel That Fire, 2009

Bentley describes the southern honkytonk scene in this upbeat song. Not a whole lot of substance in this track, but it does a great job of putting the listener in a good mood and ready for a fun night.

“Am I the Only One” – Home, 2012

Another fun, drinking song, Bentley fears that he is the only one who wants to party tonight. This is the perfect track to kick off your tailgate playlist.

“Home” – Home, 2012

This unifying anthem reminds us of what America is really about. No matter what hardships we go through as a country, this will always be the place we call home.

“5-1-5-0” – Home, 2012

This high-energy song gets the fans riled up at his concerts, as Bentley lets the audience sing along to the chorus with him. Essentially, this woman’s love makes him crazy.

“I Hold On” – Riser, 2014

A fan-favorite and staple in Bentley’s live set, “I Hold On” is a very personal track about the things in life he will never let go of, including his truck, his guitar, his religion, and his wife.

“Drunk On A Plane” – Riser, 2014

After calling off the wedding, the man in the song decides to go on the honeymoon anyway. He throws his own party on the plane ride there. This is Bentley’s biggest song, going 3X-Platinum, and is usually his live show closer.

“Say You Do” – Riser, 2014

Written by Shane McAnally with Old Dominion’s Matt Ramsey and Trevor Rosen, this song describes a physical relationship between a man and a woman after a big fight. The man is begging her to forgive him just for one more night.

“Somewhere on a Beach” – Black, 2016

The lead single off his 8th studio album, the protagonist in this fun, breakup song is using the beach and a new girl to get over his ex. Some speculate the man in this song is the same as the one in “Drunk on a Plane,” and he is enjoying the honeymoon a little more than he thought he would.

“Different for Girls” ft. Elle King – Black, 2016

“Different For Girls” highlights what breakups are typically like for both men and women. While men can act tough, throw on a nice t-shirt, and head to the bar, women usually take it much harder.

“Black” – Black, 2017

Dierks Bentley’s “Black” serves as the title track off his 8th album. Bentley’s vocals shine on this sexy and sultry track.

“Woman, Amen” – The Mountain, 2018

Bentley thanks God and expresses his gratitude for all the women in his life in this hit, which served as the lead single off his 9th album. During his live shows on the corresponding tours, black and white photos of women of all different races and ages dance across the backdrop, ending with a beautiful photo of his wife, Cassidy.

“Burning Man” ft. Brothers Osborne – The Mountain, 2019

“Burning Man” serves as the second single released from The Mountain and features Brothers Osborne on the fun, uptempo track. The song is a standout at shows with it’s upbeat melody and fun collaboration.

“Living” – The Mountain, 2019

This feel-good song explains the difference between being alive and living. It is paired with an adorable music video featuring his youngest child, Knox. Although the song suggests it is about being one with nature, the video showcases Bentley having an adventurous day with his son.

“Gone” – 2021

“Gone” marks the first of two standalone tracks released in 2020 dubbed, “covid holdover songs”. With no particular home on an album, the song laments the idea of a heartbroken person, wasting their days away after a failed relationship.

“Beers on Me” ft. HARDY & Breland, 2022

Bentley’s most recent number one single, “Beers on Me” with HARDY and Breland, serves as his latest and 21st single to top the charts. Adding rising stars HARDY and Breland make this fun-loving, upbeat anthem the perfect track to add to your playlist.

“Gold” – Gold, 2023

Over the years, Bentley has fine-tuned his musical style, delivering simple, yet perfectly elevated songs that are clearly influenced by 90s and folk music. “Gold” is one of those songs. A true embodiment of simple living, “Gold” showcases Bentley at his best. Fans seem to agree.

Dierks Bentley: ‘Gravel & Gold’ – Album Review

Dierks Bentley’s new album, Gravel & Gold is out now, February 24th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new album below.

On his tenth studio album, Gravel & Gold, Dierks Bentley is here to remind listeners why he has been one of country’s most consistent hitmakers for two decades. On the fourteen song, self-produced project, the gravel-voiced superstar shines brighter than he has in years, taking a journey through the banjo-infused, stomping country music that is purely Dierks.

Gravel & Gold is finally here. It has been four years in the making trying to perfect this project. Each song, each story is such a strong part of the gravel that led me to the gold of where we are now,” He reveals in a statement. “I am thankful for the highs and lows and can’t wait for you all to come on the journey with me.”

Bentley is immediately full throttle country on the album’s first track, “Same Ol’ Me,” proclaiming that he’s the same guy he’s always been, and it’s instantly apparent that that’s the case. In fact, he might just be better. Musically, Gravel & Gold is phenomenal, mixing traditional country instrumentation with hints of Southern rock and a bluegrass twang that has become one of Bentley’s secret weapons.

Another of Bentley’s greatest strengths is choosing duet partners who compliment him perfectly, as is the case on “Cowboy Boots.” On the immediate standout, he trades verses with the golden-voiced Ashley McBryde with an ode to everything that the famous footwear represents. “They got a reckless reputation that they always live up to,” The pair harmonize on the clever lyrics. “That’s why they call ’em cowboy boots.”

“Something Real” has hints of “I Hold On” in its role as a stadium-ready anthem that finds Bentley grappling with the shallow side of stardom, admitting that “Sometimes a crowd makes me lonely, Sometimes a shot just makes me sad.” Likewise, on “Sun Sets in Colorado” and “Still,” Bentley is introspective, enjoying life’s simpler things and places. On the former, he’s found himself at home, singing “My heart beats in Tennessee, but my sun sets in Colorado,” while “Still” has him finding peace in nature. “My head’s clear as the sky, Like the trees with no breeze, my heart is still,” He sings on the aural deep breath. “Where the world’s the way God made it still.”

Both “Gold” and “Heartbreak Drinking Tour” have hints of 90’s country, with “Gold” being another immediate standout. “Walking Each Other Home” is a clever take on humanity that can’t be missed, while “All the Right Places” has one of the most earwormy hooks on the album, as Bentley proclaims “My heart’s been broke in all the right places.”

“Beer at My Funeral” is an amusing take on death as the singer-songwriter wants his final hurrah to be a party. “They better have cold beer at my funeral // They better play good country music // When they lay me low,” He sings over smooth guitar riffs. “They better have cold beer at my funeral // If they don’t I ain’t gonna go.”

The album wraps with the tongue-in-cheek Billy Strings collab, “High Note,” which finds Bentley enjoying the finer and higher things in life. He’s settling in with some of “Willie’s best” on the twangy, fiddle-filled toe tapper of a track that ends the album on the highest of notes, quite literally.

While Bentley has admitted that Gravel & Gold was actually the third iteration of his new album and the result of two scrapped projects, it just goes to prove the old adage right: Third time’s the charm. And Gravel & Gold is indeed just that: charming.

Gravel & Gold Tracklist:

  1. “Same Ol’ Me”
  2. “Sun Sets In Colorado”
  3. “Heartbreak Drinking Tour”
  4. “Something Real”
