Jordan Davis: ‘Bluebird Days’ – Album Review

Jordan Davis’ new album, Bluebird Days is out now, February 17th on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new album below.

“This is exactly the record I want to put out,” Jordan Davis says of his new album, Bluebird Days. “I don’t know what’s going to happen with it, but I can at least tell you that the one certainty I do have about this record is I’m proud of it.”

Produced by Paul Giovanni, the follow-up to 2018’s Home State features seventeen new tracks, fifteen of which were co-written by the singer-songwriter. Over the course of the album, Davis explores universal truths from love to love lost, nostalgia to the passage of time, and the hard truths of life to of course, having a beer or two. However, what Davis does better than most is turn these themes into a mix of radio-ready singles, introspective album tracks, and so much more.

For example, the contemplative “Sunday Saints” finds him grappling with his humanity, holding the Bible in one hand and a bottle in the other. The Louisiana native cleverly sneaks in double wordplay and perhaps a nod to the New Orleans Saints throughout the track. Simultaneously, the autobiographical title track has him dealing with his parent’s divorce. Likewise, “Short Fuse” has Davis coming to grips with his anger, while “You’ve Got My Number” finds Davis going through a breakup with someone who knows him all too well. It’s a clever take on the breakup drunk dial song, as he turns the phrase “You’ve got my number” to be both literal and figurative.

The title track is a striking moment of introspection as he mourns the loss of his parent’s marriage and the childhood he became accustomed to.

“They used to be sunshine and roses // Their heads were way over their heels // Said they do then they don’t // Ended up dancing right through a minefield // ‘Cause the truth about living a lie is // That the lie never outlives the truth // Two hearts fell in love and two hearts grew apart // They went their separate ways and our bluebird days went dark”

In a similar vein is “Part of Life,” recorded almost exactly ten years after Davis departed Shreveport, Louisiana for Nashville. The track seems especially poignant as he grapples with the negative, and positive, occurrences that make life what it is.

“You live and learn and good ones go // You find out on down the road // When you lay it all on out and get down to the heart of it // Man that’s just life and that’s all part of it”

Davis is also a romantic throughout Bluebird Days, evidenced on his fifth number-one single, “What My World Spins Around” and the sexy “No Time Soon,” which has him promising a lot of lovin’ when he gets home. Meanwhile, “Midnight Crisis” finds him trading verses with Danielle Bradbery on the stunning ballad between a pair of exes who can’t quite move on.

Two additional standouts are “Next Thing You Know” and “Money Isn’t Real,” both of which have him looking at life through new eyes. On the former, he muses about how life comes at you fast, from meeting someone to getting married to having children, much in a vein similar to Kenny Chesney’s classic “Don’t Blink.”

Meanwhile, on “Money Isn’t Real,” which is one of only two songs not co-penned by Davis, he puts his own spin on the adage that money can’t buy happiness. “A dollar doesn’t make you rich,” He sings, “When it comes to happiness, money isn’t real.”

“Fishing Boat” is a special moment on the LP, a sentimental dedication to his grandfather, who he spent much of his childhood fishing with. “I bought a fishing boat—that was, like, the biggest purchase I’ve made,” Davis says. “It’s very unassuming, it’s nothing special at all. But I fell in love with fishing because of my grandfather. And I remember that first day thinking, ‘This is cool, man—I got this boat, and one day me and my son and my daughter can come fish, and then an overwhelming sadness came over me.” 

While there’s a lot of introspection on Bluebird Days, there are moments of fun, evidenced on songs like “One Beer in Front of the Other” and the album’s opening track, “Damn Good Time.”

The album ends with the CMA award-winning, chart-topping Luke Bryan duet, “Buy Dirt,” which put some new pressure on the singer-songwriter. “There’s pressure, definitely,” he says in a statement. “It’s not about trying to recreate ‘Buy Dirt,’ but we can approach songs like we approached that one, and that’s to write something that people are going to feel, and not just hear…So, the best thing for me is that ‘Buy Dirt’ opened up a whole other lane of songs that I think people can really connect with.”

For Jordan Davis, Bluebird Days is an exceptional body of work, elevating him even further as a notch above the genre’s next class of superstars.

Country artists celebrate the legacy of The Rolling Stones through fourteen distinct covers of some of their greatest hits. Last year, Brothers Osborne and The War and Treaty gave their best rendition of the classic, “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It) and Elvie Shane shared his rendition of “Sympathy For The Devil.” Today, Country superstar Lainey Wilson lends her voice to the iconic classic, “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”

This week Jameson Rodgers kicks off his latest touring gig with none other than HARDY. While fans can look forward to that, Rodgers fans also get not one, but two brand new songs to jam to, out today. Both “Goin’ Crazy” and “Holding Me Back” are solid songs that we hope Rodgers adds to his set list.

“Goin’ Crazy” is a mid-tempo love song that hits all the right notes. Rodgers co-penned the track with HARDY, Zach Abend, and Josh Thompson. Lyrically, the song is the perfect spin on how crushing on someone can make you feel like you are going crazy.

“Hey y’all it ain’t what you think // Yeah, I’m goin’ out of my mind // But my heart ain’t feelin’ no pain // It’s beatin’ better than it has in a long time // Rock bottom ain’t where I’m at // Someone’s been rockin’ my world // I’m callin’ her baby, I’m goin’ crazy // ‘Cause I’m crazy ‘bout a girl”

On the contrary, “Holding Me Back” is a relatable break-up tune. Rodgers laments about how it can be difficult to move on when you still feel emotionally stuck in an old relationship. While conceptually a different concept than “Goin’ Crazy,” “Holding Me Back” feels cohesive with Rodgers’ impressive catalog of music.

Brand new recording artist, Dalton Dover is making his major-label debut this week. Fans fell in love with Dover on the hit show The Voice, and now the singer is beginning a whole new era of his artistry. His debut single, “Giving Up On That” is officially here.

The new song was inspired by Dover’s friend during one of the singer’s first writes in town. Written by the singer with Adam Craig and John Pierce, the track is all about never losing faith in someone you love despite the circumstances. While each verse paints the picture, Dover’s talent and vocals really explode in the chorus, adding to the beauty behind the song.

Walker County: ‘No Smoke and Mirrors’ – EP Review

Warner Music Nashville recording artists, Walker County are finally ready to make their major-label debut. The duo comprised of sisters, Ivy and Sophie Walker have been cultivating their artistry for years. Their brand new EP, No Smoke and Mirrors exemplifies that.

According to the songstresses, “’No Smoke and Mirrors’ is a look at every side of Walker County. We wanted to create an EP that represented the women we’ve grown to be through our 16 years of writing and playing music. You will hear us sing about love, heartbreak, good times and personal breakthroughs.”

The five song project kicks off with the song, “Stoned,” a taste of what’s to come on the rest of the project. “Mirror Mirror” is a slow-jam that features incredible story-telling lyrics. Any one who has ever dealt with self-esteem issues can relate to the heartfelt and honest song.

“Look her in the eyes and tell her she’s pretty // Give her a smile and let her know there ain’t thing she’s gotta change // Instead of breakin’ her hеart, maybe give her a brеak today // Mirror, mirror, I know you got a lot to say // You’ve seen every single tear // Now help her see the truth more clear // Mirror, mirror”

On “Between Boyfriends,” Walker County infuses more sass into their project. A perfect country anthem, the duo unapologetically sings about being a single lady in today’s landscape.

The sisters flip the script on the fourth song on the project, “Yours Tonight.” A more sentimental ballad, the single is the lyrical expression of what it’s like to want to be with someone that does not want all of you and just cannot commit.

“I’m not yours // Just yours tonight // I take whatever I can get // Even if it’s only this // And pretend that you’re mine // Keep believing that same old lie // It’s easy lying next to you // And it’s hard for mе to face the truth // That I’m not yours // Just yours tonight”

The record culminates with the touching song, “You and Jesus.” While every song on the project is clearly from their own life experiences, “You and Jesus” feels the most deeply personal. Walker County enlists the help of Greylan James on this fan-favorite track.

Overall, No Smoke and Mirrors is an exciting taste of what is to come for Walker County. Country fans should definitely keep them on their radar.

The Beginning:

Earlier this year we named Dalton Dover as one of our 2023 Artists To Watch. Today, we are sharing exactly why he made our exclusive list.

The Georgia native grew up with country music in his soul. “I’m from a small town in Georgia, I sang beside my grandpa in church my whole childhood,” he began. “I just found really early influences. I loved singing for people and entertaining people. My grandpa introduced me early on to Keith Whitley, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, and a lot of the traditional country music.”

While his early influence certainly came from the long-established legends of the genre, Dover also loves artists like Luke Combs, Blake Shelton, and Chris Young. “I try to find influence everywhere. They are some people that I love listening to today and look up to,” shared the singer-songwriter.

At seventeen, Dover’s love for music expanded even more. “I just fell in love with country music. My grandpa bought me a guitar when I was seventeen. […] I learned “Don’t Close Your Eyes” by Keith Whitley and it was the first song I ever learned how to play on guitar,” he shared.

The Whitley song continued to be an important song for Dover as he grew into his artistry. “I’ll never forget the first time I heard that song, [“Don’t Close Your Eyes”] I remember getting chills on my arms and thinking that’s what I want to do right there. There’s no other option. Country music has always been country music, and I fell in love with it.”

The Turning Point:

As soon as Dover realized that music was his calling, there truly was no turning back. “Music has always been a part of me and my family and my friends were always like ‘one day you’re going to make it,'” shared the singer. Adding later, “I don’t feel like I made it yet to where I want to be, but so far where everything’s at, it’s been a long road from playing many shows at home and playing wherever anyone would let me play shows, I was always on a stage somewhere.”

In 2019, Dover tried out for the show, The Voice, where he auditioned for the judges with none other than the song, “Don’t Close Your Eyes.” Being on Team Blake [Shelton] helped the singer grow his confidence and artistry. “When I was on the show, I found myself. I found the artist that Dalton Dover wanted to be, I found my voice, and I came home with a different mindset. I wanted to write songs, I wanted to put songs out, I wanted to pursue this completely, ya know.”

Shortly after the show, Dover started coming to Nashville, writing songs, and truly grinding his way to his current record deal. “I wrote a few songs and then TikTok came along not too long after that, and everything just kind of fell into place, and I got to Nashville,” shared the major-label artist.

Today:

Although Dover is already a superstar according to his impressive TikTok following and fanbase, his career truly is just getting started to takeoff. The singer-songwriter makes his major-label debut with his brand new single, “Giving Up On That,” out this Friday. Check back here for our full review of the track!

In order to get fans excited for the song, the singer shared with us what we can all expect from the debut, which was written during his first-ever writer’s retreat.

“I didn’t know what to expect. I was so nervous. My buddy had told me just start getting ideas. […] This was when I was learning how to find inspiration everywhere,” began Dover. “[My buddy said] I’m never going to give up on that love, and I was like ‘oh shit, I guess I’ll just write that then.’ And so that song comes from a real place and a real-time, and it’s a very special song.”

Dover adds, “This song is going to kind of bridge the gap. It’s going to be a new era of Dalton Dover and I’m so excited for what it’s going to bring.” He also hinted that the single will be his first at country radio. “I feel like maybe you might hear me on the radio a lot. Maybe you’ll see a lot more of me everywhere […] In a business that’s so unknown, I’m so excited about the future and what it will bring.”

Everyone in country music knows that Kane Brown is a superstar in his own right; however, fans might not have always known that his wife, Katelyn is a talented singer too. The twosome combined their talents and love on a cut from Kane’s album Different Man called “Thank God.” That little song is now the number one single at country radio!

The exciting news marks Kane’s ninth number one single, and Katelyn’s first. Of course, the superstar gives his wife all the credit, sharing on social media this kind sentiment – “My baby got her first number 1 ❤️ thanks country radio and fans for blowing this one up.”

Katelyn followed suit sharing this message with fans, “I don’t even know what to say. There are absolutely no words big enough to express the feeling. I truly thought this song would be just a really cute cut on his album and now it’s the #1 song. What is even more special is the fact I get to do this with the love of my life and our baby girls get to watch mom & dad. I melt. My heart is filled with so much joy and gratitude and I can’t thank everyone enough for the love & support and for loving this song as much as we do ❤️ THANK GOD 🙏🏼 xo.”

“Thank God” is surely a special kind of love song, and it is no wonder that it catapulted to the top of the charts. Congrats to the Brown’s and their team!

Kelsea Ballerini: ‘Rolling Up The Welcome Mat’ – EP Review

Country music is all about speaking the truth no matter what. In her surprise EP and short film called Rolling Up The Welcome Mat, Kelsea Ballerini is unapologetically speaking her truth. She gets candid about what led to her divorce, her actual marriage, and everything in between. While Ballerini always creates music that is relatable and personal, this new project is one of her best yet.

The six-track project features well-crafted songs. Three of the six songs were exclusively written by Ballerini, while the songstress enlists the help of her producer and fellow songwriter, Alysa Vanderheym on the other three. Each song unfolds into the next in a way that feels cohesive, perfect for the short film that accompanies the EP.

“The only way I’ve been able to handle my life since I was 12 was to write about it. Ironically, I started writing music because my parents got divorced; that was my therapy,” shared Ballerini. “These are six songs I wish I had last year. It’s about the complexities of the feelings you go through during a massive shift at a young age. Rolling Up the Welcome Mat was how I processed everything. It’s the way I got my feelings out of my body and heart and put them to music — which is the purest way I could’ve handled it.”

“Mountain With A View,” the first song on the project candidly shares Ballerini’s breaking point, while “Just Married” is a heartbreakingly beautiful song that depicts how it feels to go from the excitement of marriage to just going through the motions.

Similarly on “Penthouse,” Ballerini shares what it is like to have everything, but how nothing feels as it should. Lyrics like “We played the part five nights, but we were never there on the weekends, baby // We got along real nice, but when I left town, did you hate me?” Hinting at the truth of what was going on behind closed doors in Ballerini’s former marriage to fellow country music singer-songwriter, Morgan Evans.

The last two tracks, “Blindsided” and “Leave Me Again” are separated by an “Interlude,” which seems to define the moments between the privacy of the relationship to when the public found out. On “Blindsided,” Ballerini unblushingly shares her truth, responding almost directly to Evans’ song, “Over For You.”

Finally on “Leave Me Again,” Ballerini vows to never lose herself again in a relationship. While heartache is painful, she wants her fans to know that healing is possible. Rolling Up The Welcome Mat is a true masterpiece.

The EP kicks off with the title track, “One Of Us.” Written by James Barker, Travis Wood, Gavin Slate, and Jim McCormick, the new single is about all of the characters we encounter during our upbringing. Despite all the different places we have grown up in, the small-town dreams, headaches, and everything in between are all the same. In the chorus, Stell proclaims that we are all one in the same.

“We all talk a little small-town bunch of raised right-round-here kids keepin’ it country // We all know a little dirt road // 80-hour workload week never hurt nobody // One of us got a chain if you get stuck //  One of us got a cooler full of cold Bud in the back of his truck // And if that sounds like you then you might be one of us // Yeah, you might be one of us”

“Roots In This Ground” is a beautiful combination of love and nostalgia. Stell finds a way to create a story, amongst all the emotions he expresses in one of our favorite songs on the project.

The nostalgia continues on the next two tracks, “Shut The Truck Up” and “Man Made.” On the former, Stell laments about a break-up, something most of us can relate to. On “Man Made,” his radio single, Stell relies on incredible imagery and the desires we all have.

“All us boys wanna grow up, make our mamas proud // Find that girl who lifts us up when life gets us down // Behind any guy doing anything right is a woman’s work at hand // If a man made anything, it’s ’cause a woman made that man”

The EP explodes into a fun-loving song called “This One’s Gonna Hurt.” Written by heavy hitters, James McNair, Michael Hardy, Cameron Montgomery, and Tyler Hubbard, the song is a bright spot on the cohesive project. The record culminates with the clever and beautiful song, “Somewhere Over The Radio.” The single is an ode to country music and a true love letter to the whole experience. “Somewhere Over The Radio” might be the best on the project, or at least our personal favorite.

Overall, ONE OF US is a dreamy EP that feels cohesive, nostalgic, and 100% Matt Stell. Every country fan should give it a listen or two.
