NYCS Swag Spotlight: Clark Manson

Clark Manson

Clark Manson, our Swag Spotlight this week wanted to be a rockstar guitarist for KISS when he was in middle school, funny enough, learning the guitar and eventually how to write music has now landed him in the country music genre.  The Covington, Ohio native grew up in a very small town graduating in a class of about 50 kids. His parents took him to see George Strait when he was 5 years old and he tells us from that moment on he just knew that’s what he wanted to do.  Branching out from listening to country music, he was influenced by John Mellencamp and KISS but eventually found his way back to the genre. “As I grew up and got older, you realize what the lyric is all about, it is more wholesome and related to me a lot more in my day to day life,” Manson tells us.

He started out just playing gigs around town, eventually when he was college playing a gig every single night. “I did about 200 shows in one year and I did that for like 3 years, I eventually realized there was no way I could go on playing cover songs forever so I wanted to do my own stuff so I started writing a lot more and did some recording.”

He tells us about a 3-day concert up in Ohio called Country Concert which takes place in July that he went to with friends every year. He tells us how great it was to one year be there partying his friends and then just a few years later to be actually playing on those same stages.

After making the move to Nashville and writing every single day with a publishing deal, Manson and his new bride decided to move back to their home state of Ohio and he now records almost all of his music right in his own home. He is a new dad, his son Jax is 9 months old and he tells us about how his latest single “Goodyear’s” was inspired by becoming a father.

The title “Goodyears” hit him like a ton of bricks after a conversation with a mechanic at his local gas station. “I told him I needed some new tires, so he asked me what kind I wanted and I asked what tires were on it now, he said “Well those were some Goodyears” I just started thinking, a good play on words, I came home, went on my back porch and just wrote the song in 20 minutes,” he recalls.

The story is classic country, and although it might have originated as a song about a truck being handed down from a father to a son, the memories made in that truck are what sticks out to the owner and eventually the three generations of the family who drive it.

“Goodyear’s” is the first of the next eight songs that Manson plans to release over the next year, finishing up vocals on the new songs now. He will be playing the Madison County Fair with Michael Ray and Drake White on July 7th in London, Ohio.  For future announcements and tour dates head to https://www.clarkmanson.com/

Kane Brown Releases Collaboration with EDM Artist Marshmello

Kane Brown Marshmello

Country singer-songwriter Kane Brown is back collaborating with another artist outside of the country genre; DJ and EDM artist Christopher Comstock, better known as Marshmello. Marshmello’s new single “One Thing Right” featuring the 2018 AMA Favorite Male Artist dropped Friday at midnight.

“Been the kinda guy girl’s mamas don’t like / Runnin’ with the wrong crowd on the wrong nights / ’Cause I’ve been wrong about a million times / But I got one thing right, you”

Brown sings about how he has faced many hardships throughout his life and that he has often been on the wrong side of things. The one thing he did get right though was his wife, Katelyn Jae. Listening to the verses, one can easily mistake this track for a country song, as Brown displays his Tennessee drawl. However, when the chorus comes around, Marshmello’s synth and bass-heavy beat come in behind the vocals, giving it a catchy electro-pop sound.

His most recent album Experiment is properly named as he experimented with a bunch of arrangements of music from all different genres, giving him a unique sound like no other artist in the genre right now. “One Thing Right” is a perfect fit for Brown and sounds like a song that could’ve been featured on this album.

In the past, Brown has recorded songs with R&B artist Khalid, pop-singer Camila Cabello, and pop-Latino artist Becky G. Marshmello has had Justin Bieber, Logic, Migos, Selena Gomez, Bastille, and many other pop icons featured on his tracks, but never one that came out of Nashville.

You can catch Kane Brown on Jason Aldean’s Ride All Night Tour at Jones Beach on September 6th.

Follow Kane Brown on Facebook, Twitterand Instagram.

“One Thing Right” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Tucker Beathard Releases Fun 90s Inspired Video for “Better Than Me”

Tucker Beathard Better Than Me

After dropping arguably his most honest and heart-wrenching ballad to date, “Find Me Here” just last month, Warner Music Nashville’s most recently signed singer-songwriter, Tucker Beathard does a complete 180 debuting a fun and playful music video for his current single, “Better Than Me.”

Beathard is known for releasing raw and vulnerable music, with authenticity laced as the common thread between all his tracks. “Better Than Me” is said to be one of the tracks off the second installment of Beathard’s soon to be released two-part album. The first LP was released back in November, entitled Nobody’s Everything.

The accompanying visuals, directed by renowned director Justin Clough, is a new take on the message told by the honest lyrics. Beathard takes inspiration from the late 90s and early 2000s punk rock videos from bands like Blink 182 and Simple Plan. The video cuts back and forth between Beathard and his band playing the song in what appears to be a basement and to Beathard and his hijinks, while he works at a local diner. He consistently makes attempts to sabotage his ex-girlfriend’s new relationship. The music video shows a different side to Beathard’s typically serious persona, giving fans a look at his fun, sarcastic, and silly side, which is equally as charming.

Beathard seemed to enjoy himself, while shooting the video, sharing in a recent press release, “The fun thing about music videos is that it gives you the chance to offer up a whole other perspective to a song. We definitely went in a sarcastic direction and brought in the style of the videos I loved growing up.” Adding via his Twitter, “Proof that I”m not always as serious as people may think. I had a blast shooting this video, and now I am so excited to get to share it with you.”

We can’t wait to see what the singer-songwriter has up his sleeve next. He continues to successfully push the envelope with each and every release while showcasing his unique artistry. Back in April, we caught up with him at Mercury Lounge in New York City and can confirm how talented of an artist he truly is. To catch the singer live at one of his upcoming shows, head to tuckerbeathard.com for tickets and more information.

Kelleigh Bannen Can’t Get Enough of This “Deluxe” Love

Kelleigh Bannen Deluxe

Cover Photo Credit: John Shearer

Kelleigh Bannen is back with new music, and a rocking “Deluxe” single off her upcoming studio album. Known for nailing emotionally-heavy and feisty uptempos (whichever route she decides to take with each song), Bannen and co-writer Danielle Blakey put a badass, sassy twist to a love story on this tune.

Drawing comparisons to an over-the-top hotel stay and lavish lifestyle choices, the song paints the picture of a relationship that one just can’t seem to ever get enough of.

“Pulling off exit 105, turning in the parking lot of an old motel / Sign says AC and cable TV no extra charge / And I’m like damn that’s kinda like you / You love like a free upgrade room with a view of the pool / It’s open til sunset only the best for the best”

With a listen to Bannen’s new tune, we figured out some qualities of this extravagant lover she sings of.
1. He is a 22% tipper
2. Treats the lady to a buffet dinner on a date night
3. Doesn’t scrimp on the good stuff
The end product of this luxurious elaborateness? A “gold-plated” and “first-rated” relationship, as Bannen sings proudly of.

Sonically, “Deluxe” could fall into the same family of songs Bannen’s “You Are What You Love,” “Sorry On The Rocks” and “Famous.” But, her latest release has vocal deliveries that augment the edginess and plausibility of this almost too-good-to-be-true relationship. “I just loved the idea for this song, about being a love with a little extra, and still being very relatable to so many people. I had the title for a while and finally was able to write and record it. I’m excited to be able to share it with my fans,” said Bannen in a recent press release.

Kudos to the two brilliant writers and producer Jaren Johnston (of The Cadillac Three) for giving what would seem like a plain vanilla happy love story; a fresh, hifalutin twist! Can all our relationships be this fancy too? Damn!

Cole Swindell Releases New Track “Drinkin’ Hours”

Cole Swindell Drinkin' Hours

This week Cole Swindell announced his fifth Down Home Session EP slated for release later this year and plans to release a new song over the next five months. Swindell is kicking things off with the track “Drinkin’ Hours.”

If you’ve had the chance to be a part of the Down Home VIP during Luke Bryan’s Sunset Repeat Tour already, you may have gotten an early listen. A member of our team heard the song when the tour kicked off in Camden, NJ and right away knew it had contention to be the song of the summer.

The song is upbeat, sharing the story of how we all look forward to the end of the workday, especially on a Friday. Who hasn’t been guilty of staring at the clock and counting down until happy hour? It’s a reminder that we all need, the weekends are meant to be enjoyed, not meant to worry about work.

“No workin’ durin’ drinkin’ hours/Round here we ain’t got no boss/Part time and over timers/’Bout to raise a little hell when we twist one off”.

This is the artist’s first new music release for 2019, following the release of his album All of It. Swindell is currently on the Sun Set Repeat tour with Jon Langston and Luke Bryan, and it’s a show you cannot miss! They’ll be stopping in Jones Beach in less than a month for two days! Get your tickets to July 13th here and July 14th here! Get your tickets here! If you can’t make the show at Jones Beach, don’t worry. They’ll be coming to Holmdel, NJ September 7th. NYCS First Impression: Aaron Watson ‘Red Bandana’

Aaron Watson Red Bandana

Aaron Watson is celebrating a huge milestone year, being in the music industry for 20 years, with a new album, Red Bandana. In the days leading up to Watson’s latest album, he took to Instagram to describe each track and how it came about. Red Bandana is not the traditional 10-12 track album and Watson doesn’t play by the rules of the industry as an independent artist. One thing to notice about him compared to any other artists is his ability to tell a story. Whether it is his own personal journey, loss, or success, a moment with a fan turned into a song, or a meaningful conversation, Watson is able to pull great songs out of anything.

The album’s cover is a simple red bandana just like the name although it’s meaning is much bigger. Watson shared on Instagram earlier this year, “To me there’s nothing more classic, more country, or more cowboy than an old red bandana. It signifies hard work, grit, and determination… I needed a cover that would reflect the meaning behind the music. I needed something with more substance than just another cover with my picture on it. The title track is a cowboy poem, so I decided, why not just photograph my Dad’s old red bandana. We tilted the square red bandana 45 degrees and there it was, like a diamond in the rough!”

Watson is right. Upon first listen, “Ghost of Guy Clark” has is such a cowboy tone to it, just like a Chris Ledoux classic. A clear ode to staying true to yourself, something the singer-songwriter clearly represents. Fading into “El Comienzo Del Viaje,” you will notice that there are no words in the minute and a half song. The sounds of an abandoned Texas town and fiddles quickly turns into sounds of a victory, like any triumphant story.

The latest single off the record “Kiss That Girl Goodbye” is based on an encounter Watson had with a fan. He shared earlier this year on his Instagram that a girl came up to meet him after a concert and told him that she was supposed to come here with her boyfriend but after she dumped him she still came to celebrate by herself. What better way to celebrate than to have Watson write such an upbeat song! Other hits include “Trying Like the Devil,” “Old Friend,” and “Riding With Red” with new music videos for each.

Out of all the songs on the album, the last one “58” is arguably the most powerful. It’s a tribute to the 58 men and women that lost their lives at the Route 91 tragedy. A few months after the shooting in Vegas, Watson played there for National Finals Rodeo where he met a sweet woman who had lost a close friend during the tragedy. She suggested that someday he should write a song for all the victims and their families. “58” is an ode to those who passed and lost loved ones during the tragedy last year. Watson once again makes a point to pay tribute to his hero, draw awareness to issues, write heart-melting love songs, and more all into one beautiful and cohesive album.

NYCS Woman of the Month: Evelyn Shriver

We’re bringing you stories from women who are chasing their dreams and building a life that they love with New York Country Swag’s, “Woman of the Month.”

Each month, we highlight a different female pursuing her passions. Introducing you to women who are taking risks, working relentlessly and turning their dreams into reality. These are empowering women who serve as role models and should be celebrated.

Evelyn Shriver

This month we interviewed another icon in the music business in Nashville, Evelyn Shriver. Shriver is the second half of the Shady Ladies of Music City along with Susan Nadler who we had the pleasure of featuring last month. The ladies together infiltrated the music business in the 1980s and 1990s, becoming the first women to ever run a music label, Asylum Records. In our most recent phone call, Shriver tells us her secret to a long marriage, all about working with Randy Travis and her advice for women in the music industry.

Growing up, Shriver’s father was in the military, and she tells us about living in Germany when she was 13 years old. She recalls going to the teen club to hear music and although it was all of the music popular in the states, it would take about six months for the “new” music to make its way to Germany. She explains that you could go to the teen club and that’s where you could listen to music, and maybe even find your husband. “My husband who I’ve been married to for 47 years, the very first time I saw him I walked into the teen club in Germany and his band was rehearsing,” she explains. Astounded, we were sure to ask what the secret to a long, happy marriage is and Shriver tells us: “The secret is, there are no rules, you just treat each other like you want to be treated and we’ve followed that our entire marriage and it’s worked out pretty good.”

When she came back to the states she finished up high school then joined her soon-to-be-husband in New York where she started working at a public relations firm. “I didn’t even know PR was a thing before I got started, we are talking about 45 years ago,” she tells us. “The company I went to work for represented Carey Grant, Bette Davis, and Joan Crawford who were huge stars, and I thought this was so interesting even though I was just the receptionist at the time.”

After starting her own business in New York, Shriver got sick of living in a one bedroom apartment, she longed for simple things like her own washer and dryer and a BBQ, so while her husband explored the songwriting opportunities in Nashville, she knew she could move there and her business would continue to thrive. She started working with Randy Travis from the very start of his career, explaining that he and his manager then turned wife Lib Hatcher were not familiar with big city living. “The first time we went to Europe on a USO tour, they wanted to go to McDonald’s, that’s not the place you go to in Paris,” she laughs. She also goes on to tell us a story about one of their first trips to L.A. and how they went to a fancy Italian restaurant and Lib ordered a salad, which was only mixed greens with dressing so she proceeded to whip out a fresh tomato from her purse, cut it up and add it to the salad in front of her.  “I was just thinking to myself, ‘What the hell is the waiter going to think’,” she giggles.

Susan Nadler, Willie Nelson, and Evelyn Shriver

She talks honestly about being a publicist and giving everything you have for your clients which includes making sacrifices in your own life. “As an older person now looking back, its ‘what happened to my life’.  I realize I don’t do anything, I don’t have kids, I don’t have any hobbies,” she explains.  “And it wasn’t that I never intended to not have children, I was always just too busy to have children, then I no longer could have children, you give up a lot for people. You have to be available 24/7 for your clients.”

After meeting Susan Nadler in 1988, the two women teamed up to run Asylum Records, making them the first females to ever run a major Nashville label. They went on to sign George Jones and help him release his Grammy-winning album Cold Hard Truth. “I thought it was really good for the town for it to not be one of the usual suspects that got the job, a man and my clients were very supportive, they knew it would be hard to turn it down,” Shriver says of taking the position.

We discussed the nature of women in the music industry and on country radio currently and she tells us how recently she went to an event hosted by her friends Tracey Gershon and Beverly Keel as well as Leslie Fram who run ‘Change the Conversation’. “The place was packed, it must have been 200 women so it’s great that there are all of these women here but I don’t hear the conversation changing much. It seems to be pretty much the same scenario, the guys are running it and the women are doing the cleanup,” she says.  “There are a lot of people talking about it but following the press coverage and women on the charts, a year has gone by and there has been one woman to take the top spot.”

After forty years in the music business, Shriver has seen a lot and gives a great few lines of advice for women trying to make their dreams come true in this industry. “My feeling is, you almost have to carve out your own space which is one of the reasons I always had my own company. Just be strong, don’t take the shit from anybody. People always said they were afraid of me or intimated by me because I always told the truth, why is that so scary? I think you just have to stand up for what you believe and if you do that, that will change the conversation.”

The Shady Ladies of Music City podcast is now live and showcases Evelyn and Susan and their hilarious stories about their journies. Check out each of the episodes below.
