NYCS Swag Spotlight: Kaleb Lee

Kaleb Lee

Our Swag Spotlight this week is former The Voice contestant and talented singer-songwriter, Kaleb Lee. In our phone conversation with the rising artist, we discussed everything from his experience on The Voice reigniting his drive to chase his music dream to how growing up, he wanted to be “Garth Brooks #2.”

Originally, Lee hails from rural, western Kentucky, where he resided throughout his childhood and even a few years into his marriage. He credits his hometown and his upbringing for making him fall in love with country music, sharing, “My first concert was a Garth Brooks concert. That started the trajectory for me of wanting to be Garth Brooks #2. I started playing guitar when I was eight. I think it was shortly after that, we went to that concert. Growing up in rural western Kentucky, what we listened to was country music. It’s Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, Travis Tritt, Clint Black, George Strait, and all those guys.”

Lee grew up listening to country music legends; however, his home town also inspired his desire to play music for a living. “We went to high school jamming it in our lifted up little trucks that we got when we were sixteen,” he laughs, adding, “Country music is so much about the lifestyle of living, but it was how we lived and it was what we listened to.”

As he tried to make it in the industry, Lee often traveled back and forth from his hometown to Nashville, Tennessee, focusing on songwriting and playing gigs, but after years of hearing more “Nos” than “Yeses,” Lee and his wife made the decision to focus on their family. In 2009, the couple and their children subsequently moved to Florida, where Lee ventured into another career path and went back to school, putting music on the back-burner for five years.

As fate would have it, producers on The Voice reached out to the dad of 3, asking if he wanted to audition for the show. With encouragement from his wife, Lee admitted that he had to take the opportunity. Lee recounted the story in our conversation, sharing “When The Voice reached out, that was one of those things that I couldn’t say no to. It kinda happened so randomly and divinely. We made that decision and went and did the audition stuff,” adding, “When The Voice reached out it was kinda a rebirth if you will of being able to go back and pursue the hopes and dreams that you had ten years ago that you thought were gone.” Lee continued to reminisce about his experiences on the show, even stating that he would do it all over again if he had the opportunity.

Since his stint on the show, Lee continues to work with his coach, Kelly Clarkson. He shares that her support and genuine excitement for his success has been invaluable, as he navigates his career as an artist. Clarkson continues to champion his career, even after the show wrapped. She is an executive producer on his EP that is slated to come out later this year, as well as, sings with Lee on his next single to be released called, “I Dream In Southern.”

His newest single, “I Need A Drink,” premiered back in July; and, it is the perfect summer anthem that embodies how you want to feel. It follows his debut single, “Cooler Weather.” Lee tells us that the new track was written specifically with summer in mind, adding “the moral of the story is we just want people to have fun and let loose because I know that’s what people want to do. People have really gravitated to it [at live shows].”

Brad Paisley Brings His 2019 World Tour to Jones Beach

As we hang on to the last bit of summer, Friday evening (Aug 30.) New Yorkers headed out to Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater to kick off Labor Day weekend. Headliner, Brad Paisley brought his 2019 World Tour to the waterfront venue, featuring special guests Chris Lane and Riley Green. Check out highlights from the show on our Instagram story here.

Just as the sun was beginning to set, one of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Riley Green took to the stage. The rising artist exploded on to the stage with songs like “Bettin’ Man,” “In Love By Now,” and “Get That Man A Beer,” both upbeat tunes. Green took some time to show off his vocals and softer side, singing his next radio single “I Wish Grandpas Never Died”. The singer-songwriter explained “If ya’ll don’t mind, I’m going to play ya’ll a brand new song that I just had written. It’s one of my favorite songs that I ever wrote,” adding that the song would be his next single on country radio, and a track on his forthcoming debut album, Different ‘Round Here.

It was clear the audience did not mind as all, as fans both sang the words back to Green and nodded and danced in approval as they listened to his breathtaking vocals. He ended his enticing set with his first number one single, “There Was This Girl,” leaving fans wanting even more music from the talented singer. Check out our Live Swag Session with Riley Green below from last Fall where he performed and chatted with us months before getting that number one.

Approximately ten minutes later, entertainer, Chris Lane brought his high-energy set to the amphitheater, even mentioning that the venue was one of his favorites to perform at. Before he even took the stage, the stage lit up with colorful lights and eclectic music blared from the speakers. It was obvious that Lane was about to leave his heart and soul on the stage, keeping everyone entertained.

The country crooner made sure to sing fan-favorites including “Fix,” “I Don’t Know About You,” and “For Her.” The entire crowd showed their approval, singing along throughout his set. One of the highlights was when Lane introduced his newest song “Big, Big Plans,” the song he just so happened to use to propose to his now fiancé Lauren Bushnell last month. Lane humbly told the audience “Thankfully, she said yes.”

As always, the singer-songwriter made sure to bring his ’90s country flair to his performance, singing a medley of some popular country songs. Lane borrowed an American cowboy hat from a fan in the audience to get into character. The charming mash-up included “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” “Boot Scootin Boogie,” “Check Yes or No,” among some other popular ’90s tunes. Lane ended his impressive set with “Take Back Home Girl,” which he sang as he ventured through the sea of fans in the audience as he made his away around the venue.

We first caught up with Chris Lane nearly two years ago when he played Long Island’s Stereo Garden. Check out the interview below where he chats about hitting the road, music, and more.

Green and Lane definitely did their jobs, as fans were eager to hear from the headliner, Brad Paisley. Paisley not only brought his unique swagger and strong vocals to the stage, but his theatrics and background images were unparalleled, only adding to the whole ambiance of his almost two hour set.

The seasoned musician sang a mix of some of his greatest hits, new songs, crowd-favorites, and everything in between. His set began with the electrifying “Beat This Summer,” following it up with “Ticks,” “The World,” and “Perfect Storm.” Although Paisley delivered every song with conviction, one of our favorite moments of the night was when he sang a mash-up of his romantic ballads, “Then” and “Waitin’ On a Woman.” The singer-songwriter mesmerized each and every fan with the love songs. Later on in the set, Paisley showed his vulnerability yet again, singing “She’s Everything,” while the camera cut to real-time clips of adorable couples in the audience, catching them on the ‘kiss cam.’

Lane and Green joined Paisley back on stage, during the middle of his set to sing both Hank Williams Jr.’s “A Country Boy Can Survive” and “I’m Still a Guy.” Each vocalist sang a verse of the song, but it was the banter between the singers that really made the performance. Paisley poked fun at Lane’s style, laughing saying, “you have more bling around your ankles than I own,” and even stopped to take a selfie with fans. All joking aside, Paisley shared, “I’m the luckiest guy in the world to have these guys out. Chris Lane! Riley Green everybody!”

Paisley kept up the energy, singing both “This Is Country Music” and “American Saturday Night.” During the later, he made sure to thank the troops for serving our country and even brought four soldiers out on stage to honor them, encouraging fans to cheer and applaud. Concertgoers obliged, giving the soldiers a standing ovation and starting a ‘USA’ chant, making for another iconic moment of the night. [Shop here for your ‘USA! Chant’ gear.]

Paying homage to 90s country, Paisley made sure to gives fans his rendition of Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee”, but it was his cover of Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher,” that surprised excited fans. Paisley ended his set, singing arguably some of his most popular songs, including “I’m Gonna Miss Her,” “Mud on the Tires,” and “Today.”

Of course, Paisley came back to the stage for an encore song, singing his Grammy nominated track, “Alcohol,” with Lane and Green. The trio’s performance was the perfect cap to a great night of country music.

This weekend wrapped up this leg of the incredible tour; however, Paisley will head to Europe for a string of shows in October. For tickets and more information head to bradpaisley.com.

Midland Perform and Answer Questions At Exclusive YouTube Event in NYC

Midland Let It Roll

With the highly anticipated release of Let it Roll just a few days behind them, Midland shared more of their stories during a Q&A at the YouTube Space in Chelsea Market in NYC. When asked about their feelings about the release, they didn’t put on any front; they admitted that they were extremely tired, as well as elated. They even created a new word, ‘tirelated’, to combine the two feelings. The grueling schedule of tours and shows, recordings and press, and trying to maintain a life is not easy, but they expressed how grateful they are for the opportunities. The band’s Cameron Duddy expressed he felt punch-drunk, mustering the strength to go through their long days, and he sure seemed it, latching on to the mentioning of sandwiching writing sessions between shows, continuing to mention ‘sandwich’ as many times as he could.

The band feels that there was less pressure on this album than their previous, describing a collaboration and real camaraderie between the group during their writing sessions in the studio. In addition, they feel the studio has been their safe place during this period, where you’re at least sitting in the same place for two to three days at a time, 12 hours a day, (a mention of sandwiches again), and a place for growth. “We’ve evolved as a band; we’ve evolved as musicians, and our relationship with our producers and our collaborators have evolved…That familiarity and the raising of the level has made this one much more joyous.”

After answering some questions from fans, they performed several of their new songs, creating new fans with every note. Their old country sound with a fresh, genuine feel and vulnerable heart might make this Austin, Texas band one your new favorite.

The Georgia native is trailblazing his own path in country music through his unique sound, clever wordplay, and a catchy melody. His new song “Half Past You” is his creative interpretation of the thoughts and feelings in your head post-break-up. “The cracks really start showing when we’re wasted / Yeah I had a little too much / I’m just staying in touch / Not trying to fall back in love / Cause I know in my heart that it’s way too soon / Dialing your numbers what my fingers do / I shouldn’t have called / I know it’s half past 2 / but I’m drunk and I guess I’m only half past you.”

[Watch] Kane Brown and EDM DJ Marshmello Perform on Good Morning America

Get your devices charged up because this morning’s Good Morning America performance is one you will want to watch over and over again. Kane Brown and Marshmello debuted a new single in late June titled “One Thing Right” and it has been garnering streams like crazy. This morning, August 30th, the two artists created a once in a lifetime experience for fans. With a live all-immersive virtual reality performance of their song “One Thing Right,” you can bet the attendees won’t forget. Download the Melody VR app which uses virtual reality to get fans closer than ever to the music they love, including this morning’s concert in Central Park!

“It is time for the grand finale of our summer concert series and we are here with none other than country music superstar Kane Brown and chart-topping electronic artist DJ Marshmello,” said co-hosts Sara Haines and Cecilia Vega. “Racking up more than 200 million streams worldwide, here is Kane Brown and Marshmello with their smash “One Thing Right.”

Kicking off the morning, Brown and Marshmello brought an undeniable energy to the stage and they were dancing all around and interacting with fans. Singing their new song together, the fans were fired up. The electric chart-topping artist showed off his guitar skills while the country star sang with his incredible voice. The crowd joined the duo in singing the chorus, “Baby, I got one thing, right Baby, I got one thing right, I got you.” Also adding “Happier” into the setlist and with Marshmello balloons bouncing around, smoke coming up from the stage, and a great upbeat song, it was the perfect way to close out the summer concert series. Brown then slowed it down with his touching #1 song “Homesick,” where he had fans swaying back and forth.

The ladies caught up with the duo and asked how it was working together considering they both come from such different genres, in which Brown responded, “Mello is awesome. Very humble, awesome guy, awesome music, his fans are awesome, so it’s just cool to be apart of everything he’s done.” To have such a unique collaboration was such a perfect way to end the summer, although you can still watch them both live in concert on their tours throughout the end of the year, rolling into 2020.

You can catch Kane Brown and all the magic on Jason Aldean’s Ride All Night Tour at Jones Beach on September 6th.

Ashley McBryde Drops New Single “One Night Standards”

Ashley McBryde One Night Standards

Ashley McBryde has returned with yet another heartfelt, delicate aria; the first taste of a new project after the release of her highly acclaimed debut, Girl Going Nowhere. The Arkansas-native publicized the news on the same day she was announced as a nominee for “New Artist of the Year” at this year’s CMA Awards. Fellow musician, “Best Shot” singer-songwriter Jimmie Allen announced her nomination while McBryde blissfully confessed the details of her newest single, “One Night Standards,” the first single of her forthcoming sophomore album pending a release date in 2020.

The “Girl Going Nowhere” singer-songwriter has never been shy when discussing authentic content in her music. “One Night Standards,” written by McBryde, Shane McAnally, and Nicolette Hayford, divulges in the ground rules set for a boisterous, guilt-free night spent in a nondescript hotel room. The less known about one another, the better. McBryde dabbled around with the idea with Hayford in a writer’s room in East Nashville, “It ain’t something, I wanna spend a lot of time in, I ain’t gonna stay for the weekend..” before reintroducing the idea to McAnally a mere two years later when the trio released they had something special. “We had to walk away from it to give it a second to breathe,” she now reflects in a press release. “When we got back in a room, this time Shane [McAnally] was with us and I joked, ‘You know, hotel rooms…they only have one night stand for a reason. They’re one night stand-ers.’ Shane and Nic’s eyes lit up, ‘Did you just say one night standards?’”

The “A Little Dive Bar in Dahlonega” artist communicates the priority of not wanting nor expecting more than a one night fling singing: “It’s just a room key, you ain’t gotta lie to me / Can’t you just use me, like I’m using you / How it goes is, the bar closes / There’s no king bed covered in roses / Just a room, without a view / I don’t want a number you ain’t gonna answer / Let’s just stick to the one night standards”

McBryde debuted “One Night Standards” at her CMA Fan Club Party and the relevance of this heavily influenced bluesy, country rock anthem is apposite to all. She will continue to premiere her new single on her upcoming tour dates, as well as her appearances in the UK.

Jill And Kate Release A Fun New Single Titled “Just Kiss Me”

Just kiss Me Jill and Kate

Nashville-based duo Jill and Kate are through with messing around. On their new single, “Just Kiss Me,” the pair is tired of a wishy-washy dude and are ready to take things out of the friend zone with one simple action: a kiss.

We’ve all been there, which makes the fun up-tempo track all the better. Here, they sing about a guy that’s always the go-to call or last drink, “dancing around” the obvious relationship that “everybody else knows [it] should be happening.” For some reason, they’re a simple lip lock away from the inevitable and the song invites the nervous (or oblivious) man to make his move.

“But you never make a move/ What you think you’re gonna lose?/ There’s really not much that you have to do/ Just kiss me/ How many signs do you need to see, see, see?/ Just kiss me/ Not like the world’s gonna end/ If you just lean in/ Kiss me/ Just kiss me.”

It’s bound to happen, so the girls are willing to wait it out. “We can wait another night,” They sing here. “But you know it’s gonna happen eventually.”

“Just Kiss Me” is a fun ear-worm of a track that’s sure to have you singing along within the first minute. The track also allows Jill and Kate to continue to show their diversity from previous releases. While “Just Kiss Me” is a pure pop song, previous releases include the country-influenced “Better,” the intensely powerful and personal “Nashville,” a lullabies album and an acoustic cover album that includes new takes on songs from the likes of Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and Kelly Clarkson. One thing shines through on all of them, however, and that’s their unrivaled harmonies.

“We are SO EXCITED because our new song, ‘Just Kiss Me,’ just released TODAY and we want you to hear it! We’ve never shared this song before with anyone — we wrote it with Ben Goldsmith in Nashville, TN and it was produced by Luke DeJaynes and Seth Earnest. We feel SO LUCKY to work with awesome people who are talented, humble, and an absolute blast,” Jill and Kate said in an email. “This song will make you dance, make you want to roll your windows down…and maybe do a little kissing :)”

The independent singer-songwriters have appeared on a Swag Session and even invited NYCS’s own Stephanie and Christina on their “Girls Just Pod To Have Fun” podcast.

NYCS First Impression Trisha Yearwood ‘Every Girl’

Trisha Yearwood

When it comes to the all-time great female vocalists in country music, it would be impossible to not mention Trisha Yearwood. Today (August 30), the songstress released her new album, Every Girl, her first original solo project since 2007’s Heaven, Heartache, and the Power of Love.

When speaking of the project, Yearwood reveals, “I like the songs that take me on a journey through a lot of different emotions. The theme of the album is it’s okay to be who you are no matter what. Sometimes, you’re playful. Sometimes, you’re frustrated. Sometimes, you’re sad. Sometimes, you’re happy. It’s okay. The album gave me permissions to be all of those things.”

Created with longtime collaborator and producer Garth Fundis, Every Girl is truly Yearwood at her finest, perfectly pairing her resplendent voice with powerful, yet relatable, lyrics and lush instrumentation. The album also features an array of Yearwood’s famous friends, including her husband Garth Brooks, Kelly Clarkson, and Don Henley, on background vocals, only further elevating the stellar collection of tracks.

The album opens with “Workin’ On Whiskey,” a slow-burn ballad that truly sets the mood for the album. Put simply, Yearwood’s delivery here is masterful. Her vocals are only further complemented here by background vocals from Clarkson, who adds a beautiful layer of high harmonies that send the song soaring even further into the stratosphere. Look for Clarkson to appear again on “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know,” a heartbreaking tale of ill-fated love. “Tell me something I don’t know/ This winds gonna have to blow/ I know you’re only trying to help,” Yearwood agonizes. “But I will find out for myself/ I know your heart’s in the right place/ But I can make my own mistakes/ It’s gonna hurts when he lets go/ Tell me something I don’t know.”

The album is far from a collection of sad songs, however, as evidenced immediately on the Motown-esque “Find A Way,” originally recorded by Lucie Silvas on her stellar 2015 release, Letters to Ghosts. Likewise, the collection’s first single, and title track, is an up-tempo country bop that every girl can relate to. “Every girl in this town’s had a Friday night / That ended in tears under the yellow porch light / Thinking it was love / But it was only seventeen,” Yearwood sings. “And we dance / And we laugh ’til we all fall down / We keep kissing boys trying to figure it out / Stretching for stars on our tiptoe hearts trying to get our big dreams off the ground / Like every girl in this town.”

“Drink Up” is Yearwood’s closest foray into the genre of party songs, inviting listeners to lift a cup and celebrate life. While she may be encouraging raising a cup and drinking up, the song is truly a metaphor for embracing where your life is now, and embracing that. “Sip it, Chug it, Shoot it, Raise it, High / Don’t waste it / Taste every drop of this life / Yeah, toast it / Chase it down ’til it’s dry / Drink up / Whatever you got in your cup/ drink up.”

There are other stand out tracks on the album, including “Matador,” which shows Yearwood as the consummate storyteller on this darker story song. There’s also “Bible and a .44,” originally recorded by Ashley McBryde, that Yearwood dedicates to the memory of her late father, as well as the moving “Home,” originally recorded by Bonnie Raitt in 1977.

Yearwood pairs with husband, Garth Brooks, on the sultry “What Gave Me Away,” which she tells People is about “an intimate moment between two people. I couldn’t imagine asking anyone else to sing on this song except Garth. He’s my person. He’s my crush.”

One of the album’s most poignant and powerful moments comes on the album’s final track, “Love You Anyway.” Here, Yearwood enlists “Walkaway Joe” collaborator Don Henley. While Brooks may be her soulmate, Henley just may be her vocal soulmate, their voices harmonizing in a way that is absolutely ethereal. No matter what happens in this relationship, the pair sing of undying love over a haunting piano melody, “So break my faith, forget my name, either way, it’s, all the same, / You’re my first word / You’re my last breath / My will to live / When nothing’s left / Tear this heart right out of me / Lock it up and lose the key / Curse my name when you kneel to pray / I’m gonna love you anyway.”

When speaking on the new album, Yearwood says, “I’m so grateful the songs were there. I found 14 tunes I couldn’t live without. You want people to recognize you as an artist, but you also want to take them somewhere they haven’t necessarily been with you before….I’d love for people to be as moved by the songs as I was when I recorded them,” Yearwood says. “I’ve never experienced more joy in the studio.”

And that joy shines through on every track on the album. Yearwood may have found 14 tunes she couldn’t live without, but she also gave listeners 14 songs that WE couldn’t live without.

In support of Every Girl, Yearwood performed on The Today Show yesterday and will headline her own solo tour for the first time in five years, kicking off October 3rd. She’ll hit New York’s Town Hall Theater on Thursday, November 21.

Craig Morgan Drops Powerful Song “The Father, My Son and The Holy Ghost”

Craig Morgan

It’s been just a little over three years since Craig Morgan and his family had to deal with the terrible reality of his son, Jerry, dying in a tubing accident on a lake close to their house. The nineteen-year-old was one of four children and in the wake of their loss, Morgan and his family have grieved, keeping their faith as a cornerstone in their lives.

Today (Aug 30th) he releases his first new music in three years, a song written solely by Morgan, that honors not only his son but the faith he has used to get him through this horrific time and the belief that he will see Jerry again one day. “The Father, My Son and the Holy Ghost” while a slow ballad, is inspirational, telling the story of what Morgan deals with and has overcome in the aftermath of losing Jerry. “But the pain of this was more than I’d ever felt before, yeah I was broke” he croons in the second verse, only to continue the process of crying and turning that emotion around to praying to God and finally little by little receiving hope.

“In the mornings I wake up give her a kiss, head to the kitchen / Pour a cup of wake me up and try to rouse up some ambition / Go outside sit by myself but I ain’t alone / I got The Father and my son and the Holy Ghost”

The listener is brought along on this ride with Morgan filled with anguish and sadness as he closes out the track with the lyrics, “One day I’ll wake up and I’ll be home, with The Father, my son, and The Holy Ghost.” In his delivery, you feel the agony as well as the confidence and conviction that he knows his son is no longer with him on Earth but that he is not gone.

Back in 2017 Morgan debuted The Gallery at Morgan Farms, a family-owned and operated a farm-to-home business in his hometown of Dickson, TN. The store features a variety of artisan items handmade by him and his family.
