Watch Ashley McBryde’s New Music Videos Full Of Twisted Events

Ashley McBryde Music Videos

Ashley McBryde is undoubtedly one of the most daring up-and-coming female country artists, who not only has a vulnerable yet powerful voice that turns heads, but spunk and personality to match. With her 2017 debut single “A Little Dive Bar in Dahlonega”, McBryde successfully introduced herself as a polished and confident artist, securing her place on country radio. The lyrics solidified her well-deserved spot even more by taking part in the songwriting process among Jesse Rice and Nicolette Hayford. “Girl Going Nowhere” soon followed, alongside her debut album, which acted as the title track and single-handedly won the hearts of America during the 2019 ACM Awards.

The Arkansas native took some time off from releasing new music until a new single titled “One Night Standards” came out in August. Though there’s nothing small about this track, it goes against all the love songs that country music is so known for.

The chorus reads: “It’s just a room key / You ain’t gotta lie to me / Can’t you just use me like I’m using you? / How it goes is, bar closes / There’s no king bed covered in roses / Just a room without a view / I don’t want a number you ain’t gonna answer / Let’s just stick to the one night standards”. The honesty within the track overrides the shame of inviting an almost stranger to share a night together. But there is no shame depicted, rather McBryde presents it as a natural response to loneliness with “I ain’t gonna say I never do this / ‘cause truth is, lonely makes a heart ruthless”.

The video adds to the already gutsy song with a heavy, complex storyline that involves cheating and murder. McBryde acts as the desk receptionist at a motel while a strangely paired couple books a room and things get…intense, to say the least. Interestingly enough, the supporting roles within the video are not given a voice, everything is muted to give the lyrics their weight, which is surprisingly effective. You are able to feel the anger, uneasiness, and anxiety despite the lack of sound coming from the story displayed on the screen. Still, the viewers are given a spoonful of thrill and horror, something you wouldn’t normally find in a music video, and yet the entertainment is much appreciated.

“Martha Divine” acts as the second half to the “One Night Standards” music video which ended with a “to be continued”. The series of storytelling through many songs not only practically guarantees returning viewers, but it also creates a deeper connection to the material by building these 3-dimensional characters. Take a listen to the new track, grab some popcorn, and prepare yourself for the continued anguish of the unflattering deed that is getting rid of a corpse.

First off, the lyrics are vengeful and resentful while a layer of self-justification is involved in defending the, deemed reasonable, reaction to discovering your dad with another woman. “You put your hands on the wrong damn man this time / Jezebel, you’re bound for Hell / But evidently, the devil was busy so I moved you up in line, Martha Divine” showcases the guilt-free attitude of those participants of the vicious crime. It’s similar to “Two Black Cadillacs” by Carrie Underwood with the honorable stance these ladies take in seeking revenge, no matter the delicate balance of morale and imprisonment possibilities.

The video takes an interesting twist by opening at the same hotel as the “One Night Standards” music video with all the characters as if no time as passed since the making of it. This creates a pretty dense layer of suspense, with help from the steady, thick beat of the song. The one difference is that the camera focuses on the mistress’ signature, Martha Divine while checking into the room which is clever, for obvious reasons. “Martha Divine” is the same story as the previous track, set from a slightly different perspective, the daughters. McBryde sings from the young girls’ perspective with “Momma’s an angel / My daddy isn’t / Looks like a little more rubbed off on me that didn’t” as an indication of the narrator (McBryde) telling a story rather than herself playing an important role in the action. The identical production of the two different songs is somehow more satisfying than continuing the story and revealing how the night ends up with all of its foul glory.

“Martha Divine” goes along with McBryde’s feisty approach that is apparent in a wide selection of her songs. Despite the toughness, her voice is commonly paired with this raw, bittersweet sentiment to it in the more stripped-down tracks such as “A Little Dive Bar in Dahlonega” and “The Jacket”. This artist is versatile with her vocal abilities and succeeds whether the level of spunk overrides the vulnerability within the song or not. Ashley McBryde is one to look out for because of the broad range of messages her song stories convey as well as her tendency to tell a story in one song and speak true, personal lyrics in another.

Brandon Lay Drops A New Single, “For My Money”

 By Briana Lopez

Brandon Lay For My Money

Brandon Lay’s new single “For My Money” is a sweet story where the guy tries to get the girl. Unfortunately, the guy we’re rooting for is lacking one important thing he needs to keep the girl… the money she thinks he has!

The song was compared to the “Fake it ‘til you make it” mantra and was described as a “champagne taste on a very beer budget.”
He sings, “So, if I fake it ‘til I make it, if I keep her long enough, maybe I can find some paper, we can really fall in love.” The upbeat “I’m gonna work for what I want” tune is a sweet gesture of a guy who’s going to give it everything he has to make the girl happy but, while listening, you get so consumed by the vibe you forget to feel sorry that the girl is completely taking advantage of our lover boy. No worries, I’m sure with his snazzy voice and positive attitude it will get him farther than the money will. The song was written by Brandon Lay and Andrew DeRoberts and is receiving a lot of positive buzz.

“This song is exactly what country radio needs- A fun lyric and an infectious groove you can’t help but crank out loud! I’ve got this one on repeat,” says Jonathan “JR” Ruppel, Program Director for WPOR Portland (ME).

Growing up in Jackson, Tennessee, a city that is halfway between two of music’s biggest cities, Lay shares that inspiration came from all sides, “You were hearing out of each ear: rock & roll and R&B to the west in Memphis, and country to the east in Nashville.”

The song will impact country radio on January 21, 2020, just in time to kick-off the Fire’t Up Tour with Brantley Gilbert, Dylan Scott, and Chase Rice on January 23, 2020, in London, Ontario. The tour is hitting over 30 different cities before ending with two nights at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. For tickets and additional info head to www.BrandonLay.com

The Cadillac Three “Hard Out Here For A Country Boy” with Travis Tritt & Chris Janson

By Briana Lopez

The Cadillac Three have released a new song “Hard Out Here For A Country Boy” that features “Good Vibes” singer Chris Janson and “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive” singer and 90s country icon, Travis Tritt. The upbeat, punchy, attitude-filled song is off their 16-track project COUNTRY FUZZ that will debut February 7, 2020, through Big Machine Records. Guitarist and lead vocalist Jaren Johnston along with drummer Neil Mason wrote the track alongside songwriter Jeremy Stover while on the road.

“We were playing some tour dates with Travis Tritt and The Charlie Daniels Band when “Hard Out Here For A Country Boy” was written. He was on the bus when we were playing through some songs and with his big signature twang belted out the line,” shared Johnston in a press release. “I grew up listening to Travis, and he’s a big reason I sing the way I do—that gritty twang thing. We knew he had to be on the song.” Mason added, “This song was kind of a jumping off point for the record and one of the first we cut. We’ve all been buddies for years and Chris heard the song playing in the background during a call with Jaren. It was cool that he quickly wanted to be a part of it and cut the vocal the next day.”

Late last year, the band released “Back Home” and “Long After Last Call” along with the news that they were heading out on tour to support the new music. Their forthcoming album also features the previously released singles “Crackin’ Cold Ones With The Boys” and “All The Makin’s Of A Saturday Night”.

Lead vocalist Jaren states, “When I think of Southern rock, I think of Lynyrd Skynyrd. When I think of country I think of Garth Brooks. This record and this band are all that. But it’s also ZZ Top and Jerry Reed. It’s Medeski Martin & Wood and Prince. There’s no better way to describe who we are other than Country Fuzz.”

To the group, COUNTRY FUZZ isn’t just the name of an album, tour or merch line, it’s their aesthetic and what defines them in both their music artistry and the lifestyle that is shared between the three musicians. “We’ve matured as musicians and as a band,” says bassist and steel guitar player Kelby Ray. “Our sound is second nature to us and that only comes from playing together for as long as we have.”

TC3’s sound is something that is unique and different from what is expected from a country group. “It’s not easy to land on something that is your own thing, but we’re proud to say we did that,” says Mason. “It works for us in any direction that we’re going. Country Fuzz is anything from a stripped-down ballad to a sludgy, riff-heavy rock song. And it’s also country-funk.

The Cadillac Three will get ready to hit the road on January 23, 2020, in Jackson, TN before heading off to Europe to headline the Country to Country Festival. New York City fans can catch them on February 12th, at Bowery Ballroom. For tickets and more info click here.

NYCS Swag Spotlight Featuring Kylie Frey

Kylie Frey

This month’s Swag Spotlight series features Louisiana born Kylie Frey; a former rodeo star, honky-tonk singer, and rising country artist. Growing up in a rodeo family in Louisiana, music came a little bit later for Frey. Her early success originated from roping calves and tying goats, however she showcased another talent with her voice at the rodeo. Frey said, “When I was about five years old, I started singing the National Anthem at every rodeo I was entered in, so that’s how I got into it.”

Music became even more prominent in her life when she began writing her own songs. Frey revealed, “I picked up playing guitar around13 or 14 and it was the age of Taylor Swift.” A voice coach encouraged her to write, and at that point in her life, she was just a little girl who did not know how to get her feelings out.

Writing songs became her outlet and safety net, not imagining she could ever be a big-time country star. It was essentially a form of therapy, Frey explained, “It was me getting my feelings out onto a piece of paper and for some reason, words just made sense when you put a melody and chords to it.”

Frey’s earliest memories of country music and major influences were Shania Twain and The Dixie Chicks. One of the most incredible full-circle moments occurred when Frey was a contestant on “Real Country,” and Shania Twain chose her to be on her team.

It was back in Kindergarten when Frey dressed up as Shania Twain for career day, and Twain was able to see the photo during the audition. However, it was not the childhood photo that stood out to Twain, Frey explained that “Twain told her she heard a strong independent woman.” and her response was, “Yes, that is because who your music taught me to be.”

It was truly a life-changing experience for Frey who recently released her new single “One Night In Tulsa.” The singer-songwriter tells a story of the desperation of wanting one more night with someone when you know it ultimately will not work out. Frey possesses the incredible ability to write songs that draw us in with her traditional county style and smooth, powerful voice.

Looking forward to 2020, Frey will be releasing new music, in addition to “all things deep-fryed.”
