NYCS First Impression: Tyler Farr ‘Only Truck In This Town’

Tyler Farr EP

Tyler Farr hit the ground running amidst the mud and the backroads since the five years since his last album release Suffer In Peace. Known for hits “A Guy Walks Into A Bar” and “Whiskey In My Water,” Farr has released his long-awaited EP Only Truck In Town this past Friday.

The title-track “Only Truck In Town” is heavily guitar-stricken, highlighting Farr’s raspy vocals in this backroads love song. This past Saturday, June 6th, the official music video for the track premiered on CMT’s Hot 20 Countdown.

“Soundtrack to a Small Town Sundown” takes on an oppositional vibe from the kickoff track with picked fretwork and a mid-tempo beat. It discusses the impact of music, the powerful connotation it can, or cannot hold. Every moment, every story, every town owns a curated soundtrack. One song can take you back anywhere. He sings: “Should’ve heard it in a parking lot dark // Like a match lighting backseat sparks // I knew I had her when the Silverado speakers started singing what I couldn’t // What I should’ve, yeah // Should’ve heard the first time I kissed her // Just don’t sound the same now // That light, it was perfect, it was like a soundtrack to a small town sundown.”

“I Wish Dogs Could Live Forever” catches your attention immediately because who doesn’t wish their pet could live with them forever. It’s a confessional ballad that expresses all the memories that the protagonist and their dog would do together while the chorus lists all heartbreaking things that he wishes wouldn’t happen. “Heaven In Dirt” closes out the EP with its immense contemporary country influences.

“You got me flying on a cloud right now // The way you look in that rearview sure makin’ me want to // Pull it over, maybe slow it on down // Let your wild go crazy, slide on over here baby // Take our time, let the night get to work // Girl, you’re makin’ these backroads feel like heaven on dirt”

The singer shared his excitement on Instagram on the EP’s release date noting, “After 5 years, I’m proud to say my new EP is out! My buddy @jasonaldean produced it and I’m excited for y’all to give it a listen. You’ve really been patient and I can’t thank you enough for the support all these years. Check out #OnlyTruckInTown at the link in my bio.”

Aldean also expressed his excitement writing, “The EP is out today just to give you a taste of what is coming your way. Crank it!”

Nearing the end of the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, this disease has really hit home for Farr. His wife is a critical care nurse who worked in the COVID unit in Franklin, Tennessee. He’s been an avid advocate for frontline workers and essential workers.

To keep up with Tyler Farr follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Honey County

Honey County

This week our Swag Spotlight shines on a trio of powerful songstresses, Dani Rose, Tracy Lambertucci, and Sofie Lynn, who make up the group Honey County. Although the group has evolved over the years, their love for making music has always been at the heart of their artistry. We conversed with two of the members, Dani and Sofie about their journey.

Growing up in different parts of the world, including Virginia, Texas, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, Honey County formed organically, when founding member, Dani, fell in love with the idea of creating an all-female musical group. After opening up for female country songstress LeAnn Rimes and receiving encouragement from her manager, Dani set-out to find her group. “We auditioned a bunch of people,” she tells us, “[We] created Honey County, as a trio, and it was like having sisters, but away from home, which was really nice.”

Each of the members grew up liking different genres of music, such as R&B, classic rock, and southern rock, but later in life, realized, that country music was where they belonged. “Music [was] the only thing constant in my life,” Sofie shared during a difficult time in her life, “The only thing that can get me through is music,” she added.” Dani echoed that sentiment, realizing that country music was, where she belonged when she fell in love with a project by Tim McGraw. The ladies also credit singers such as Usher, The Beatles, and Shania Twain as some of their inspirations.

Although it took some time to find the current three members of the group, Honey County could not be happier with how much they have grown and evolved over the past few years. “We finally came up with this really unique kind of pop-country, but still particularly true to our sound and our own beliefs, and our own honest open-writing,” Dani shares about the group’s progression.

Their unique sound and style is showcased perfectly in their newest single entitled “Woke Up Tired.” The ladies co-wrote the song with Kalie Shorr, an artist and friend that they often write with and to refer to as the “secret 4th member of Honey County.” Like everything they do, the new single is rooted in love, harmonies, and killer lyrics.

The song is all about having a really good dream about your love interest that came about after Shorr played a killer rift and Dani had a stroke of genius with what started as a pick-up line. I’d been running around with you in my dreams girl,” she laughed, before sharing the meaning of the song. “You are running around with this guy that you are so obsessed with in your dreams and you just can’t stop thinking about him,” she began, “You come up with all these different scenarios in your head, and we thought it would be so fun to sing about that.”

Honey County also let us in on a secret, sharing that hopefully some time in the summer another new song, written with Shorr and Hillary Reynolds will be released called “Got It From My Mama.” It seems like that song will be another song for fans to relate to.

Until then, Honey County will continue to promote their new single and current music, as they navigate the waters of digital performances during this chaotic time in the music industry. The ladies have already played ‘Statecouch’ festival and have participated in other live performances via their social media channels. We look forward to more new music and anticipate a big audience when they are finally able to get back on stage.

To keep up at Honey County follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Josh Kerr Releases Nostalgia-Laced Track “Fall In Love”

Josh Kerr Fall In Love

Josh Kerr has been one of Nashville’s staple songwriters and producers for years. In late 2019, he released his debut artist project, How Do You Remember Me, where fans got to hear his stories and discover his artistry. Kerr is all about the music; he shares music with the world whenever he feels like people need to hear it. And the world does need to hear the painfully vulnerable lyrics and tales that Kerr is so good at spinning. Today, he released a new song, “Fall In Love” the first of 12 new songs that he’s slated to release later this year.

“Fall In Love” is an upbeat, driving with the windows down type of song. It feels like Labor Day weekend, when it’s the last taste of summer and still warm out, but you know your life and the leaves are about to change. Emily Falvey, who co-wrote the song with Kerr, sings a breathy background vocal, and her voice sounds so far away, like the girl Kerr is singing about is just a memory now.

The song tells a story of a relationship that was good in the summer into the fall, but “when the days got short and the nights got long”, and the weather got colder, their love also turned cold and the relationship fell apart. Kerr looks back on the relationship and wonders if she misses him the way he misses her, singing, “When I looked into your eyes, I sure felt like somebody”.

The chorus is really clever: “And we spent the fall, in love/My sweater slipping off your shoulders/You were smiling and pulling me closer,” Kerr sings, with twinges of nostalgia laced in his voice. There are dreamy harmonies and intricate banjo licks that make this sound like signature Kerr.

In a recent Instagram post, Kerr shared that during quarantine, he’s been making a lot of music and staying busy. “The more time at home meant getting out of my comfort zone and getting better. This is the first song I’ve released where I played all the instruments, tuned & comp’d all the vocals, and attempted my first real mix,” he said. “To be honest it’s made me really nervous. Thank you to every person that’s given me the confidence to go for it. This song feels like the first time that I get to openly and honestly musically meet everyone.”

Something to look forward to over the next 11 months is to watch Josh Kerr evolve as a singer, songwriter, artist, producer, and engineer. We live in unprecedented times, and Kerr is one of the few artist-writers who really understands how to tell his own story while still telling everyone else’s stories too.

Canaan Smith Drops Cheeky Single “Colder Than You”

Canaan Smith "Colder Than You"

Round Here Records, Florida Georgia Line’s independently owned record label, recording artist Canaan Smith has released his first radio single since 2017 and it’s titled “Colder Than You.” The first impression of the song presents the album artwork. “Colder Than You” finds a rugged Smith stained with a muddy, dark-colored ambiance tracing the singer back to his Virginian back-country roots.

“Colder Than You,” written by Smith, Corey Crowder and Jared Mullins and co-produced by Smith, Tyler Hubbard, and Brian Kelley, combats the storyline of a man who has lost his girl and finds comfort in a 12-pack. But don’t get him wrong, this is not a sad drinking song. The track inaugurates with the country artist’s isolated vocals quickly meeting a guitar track bringing alongside a country, rhythm and blues nature. Smith’s cheeky side embellishes in the excellently-concocted lyrics singing: “Girl, I ain’t drowning your memory / These mountains are all that’s in here getting’ blue / Baby, I might’ve finally found something colder than you.”

This single follows Smith’s previous track “Beer Drinking Weather” and hit single “Love You Like That” that reached number one on the Country Airplay chart in July of 2015.

Summer is Sizzling Hot with Renee Blair’s ‘Heatin’ Up My Summer’

Heatin' Up my Summer Renee Blair

Rising Nashville singer-songwriter, Renee Blair, brings the heat with her new jam, “Heatin’ Up My Summer”. This release follows her early 2020 debut EP “The Ones to Slow Dance To”, which featured a powerful and delicate range of ballads. The new single showcases her versatility as an artist, as Blair delivers an expertly crafted country song with considerable pop influences.

The song begins with a captivating blend of country strums and synth-pop beats. The ultramodern sounds allow for Blair’s fresh and smooth vocals to shine and her confidence as an artist is palpable. This light-hearted track details the excitement and intensity of a summer romance, with sassy lyrics about someone pining over their new love interest.

Leading up to the first chorus, Blair boldly sings clever plays on words and keeps the flirtation levels high throughout.

“With the way that you / undress me with your eyes / it ain’t even June / but boy I know that I / I want you heating up my summer / keeping me up all night / don’t you dare go make me wonder/ what kissing you is like”

Electrifying pop beats throughout convey a strong feeling of movement, and the audience is constantly excited about where the song will flow next. The listening journey is especially enjoyable, as each verse and chorus feature a unique vibe that ultimately connects into one cohesive song.

The artist belts summer-themed lines throughout the song filled with flirty innuendos, “Baby don’t you want to put your hands / on my body / where the sun don’t tan”.

The listener is given vivid and suggestive imagery throughout, further pulling them into this dreamy summer fantasy. This song could not be more perfect for hanging the pool or driving with the roof down this summer! It exudes confidence from Blair the whole way through and we look forward to hearing her future releases, as she is bound to share fresh and new sounds.

CMT Celebrates Our Heroes – TV Special Recap

Thomas Rhett CMT Celebrates Our Heroes

While most of the world is on pause and our office-based employees are working from home, our brave, first responders are going about business as usual, putting their lives at risk to protect ours. Country Music Television (CMT) and stars in both Nashville and Hollywood came together last night during “CMT Celebrates Our Heroes: An Artists of the Year Special” to show their appreciation for all the essential workers in healthcare, education, infrastructure, the food industry, police force, and more!

Little Big Town kicked off the special with a song off their new record Nightfall, “Bluebird”. The group performed in front of a green screen that made it look they were all together in an open field. After, Blake Shelton made an appearance to give a shout-out to the community of Kodiak, Alaska for giving over 3,400 meals a day to underprivileged children. Luke Combs then performed his new, timely hit “Six Feet Apart.”

A lot of preparation goes into a tour, between promoting, the band practices, creating the setlists, on-screen graphics, theatrics, and more. Imagine the artists just went on stage and winged it? That is exactly what teachers had to do because of the school closures. They had to get creative and quickly come up with lesson plans they could teach their students from home. One teacher that was featured on the special had a student who lacked motivation, so he promised her that he’d make a TikTok with her if she did her all of her homework for one straight week. In honor of our educators, Thomas Rhett performed another timely tune, “Be A Light.”

Maryland governor, Larry Hogan appeared in the special to honor two specific heroes in the community, Karla Thornton, a nurse at Anne Arundel Medical Center, and Lucia Tucker, the founder of Operation Open Tab, a foundation that raises money for local restaurants to help feed the needy. CMT and Ram Trucks donated $25,000 worth of PPE and other supplies to Thornton’s hospital and $25,000 to Tucker’s foundation. Brothers Osborne, from Deale, Maryland themselves, joined the video call, surprising the two with a brand new song called “Make it a Good One.” This is a feel-good track that puts describes all the things you can do to make your one and only life a good one.

Darius Rucker performed a Randy Travis cover, “Forever and Ever, Amen” to honor those in relationships who are quarantining and can’t be together. Behind him flashed pictures of couples holding each other with masks on, symbolizing that they will be together again. Actress, Olivia Munn made an appearance to pay respects to the ingenuity industry for altering their usual business plans to create more essential goods, such as masks, hand sanitizers, and ventilators.

Sam Hunt covered a deep cut from Bruce Springfield, “Jack of All Trades,” to honor the blue and white-collar workers who may have taken pay cuts or lost their jobs completely, but are still managing to keep them and their families afloat in this tough financial time. Kelsea Ballerini covered Carole King’s “You’ve Got a Friend,” which paid respect to the children in our communities who are going the extra mile in their communities to give back.

Brandi Carlile sang a tune off her most recent record, “Most of All” with her brothers. This song pays tribute to all the parents who haven’t seen their children due to quarantine. In the song, Carlile discusses how she hasn’t spoken to her parents in a while but still lives by the lessons they taught her when she was young. Tim McGraw also honored his biggest hero, his mother on the special with his new song, “I Called Mama.”

Scarlett Johansson gave a shout-out to the police force and other first responders, including one in particular, a NY-NJ based officer named Rick Vanderclock who lost his grandfather to COVID-19. Miranda Lambert, who married a NYC police officer, then sang “Bluebird” from her ‘Magic Porch’ in Nashville.

Florida Georgia Line performed a song from their 6-Pack EP, “U.S. Stronger” for the US Military. This new song is about coming together as a community to overcome any obstacles we come across. Kane Brown ended the show with an emotional cover of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me.”

Other artists and celebrities who appeared in the special to show their gratitude included Bobby Bones, Cody Alan, Carrie Underwood, Lee Brice, Lauren Daigle, Jake Owen, Lady Antebellum, Reba McEntire, Sean Penn, Kristen Bell, Gary Sinise, Keith Urban, Jason Aldean, and Zac Brown.

During the broadcast, NYCountry Swag was live-tweeting to our followers. Upon clicking #CMTCelebratesOurHeroes, we saw so many of you sharing your heroes with us and thanking them for their service to our communities. Seeing that warmed our hearts!

The summer tours may all be canceled or postponed, but country music remains very much alive. Artists will use this time off to work on their craft, create new music and, more importantly, give back to the community. We are eager to see what the artists have in store for 2021, as we believe it will be one of the most exciting and uplifting years country music has ever seen!

Keep up with CMT by following them on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Kane Brown Drops Meaningful New Song “Worldwide Beautiful”

Brown WorldWide Beautiful

County music superstar Kane Brown joins the likes of many other country artists in being a voice for racial equality for Black Americans in the United States. He decided to release a song close to his heart, which also so happens to be his postponed world tour’s namesake, “Worldwide Beautiful.”

“I’m releasing this song early that I’ve been holding onto for a year. I’m hoping it will bring us together during this time and proceeds are being funded to the Boys and Girls Club,” Brown shared on his social media platforms.

Although completely different than anything he has previously released, “Worldwide Beautiful” is special. Brown manages to create a unique vibe and feeling in the new track, clearly leaning on his R&B influences. It speaks to issues that are currently at the forefront of our social climate. Brown talks about how his fanbase consists of a wide group of individuals and pleads for everyone to just come together to support one another. The message is powerful, needed, and appreciated.

“White churches, black churches / Different people, same hearses / It’s kinda hard to fight with each other / Laying down in the ground, six under / At every show I see my people / They ain’t the same but they’re all equal / One love, one God, one family”

If you would like to make any additional donations to the Boys and Girls Club of America, please visit www.bgca.org

Tucker Beathard Releases New Track “Can’t Stay Here”

Tucker Beathard Can't Stay Here

We always appreciate how recording artist Tucker Beathard crafts his music. The singer-songwriter always lays his heart on the line, deepening his connection with his loyal fanbase. Most recently, Beathard premiered a new song entitled “Can’t Stay Here.”

Co-written by Beathard with Ryan Tyndell, Will Lam, and Joe Whelan, the new song might seem familiar to his social media followers, as the singer posted stripped-down versions of the song across his platforms before its release. According to Beathard, this song is a special one. “After my brother passed away in December, I wasn’t sure if I had the emotional energy to start writing again right away,” he shares in a vulnerable press release, “But, I decided I might as well try and clear my head and mess around with some writer buddies of mine and sure enough, the first song I wrote this year was this one.” The brand new record is a taste at Beathards’ second chapter of his upcoming debut double album.

The song follows the release of “You Would Think” and spotlights Beathard’s gift of expressing honest and real pain through his music. “Can’t Stay Here’ is about that point in a break-up, where you cannot keep allowing your ex to come back when they feel lonely. The concept is relatable, yet heartbreaking. In the song, Beathard somehow finds a way to convey strength in a complicated and difficult situation.

“You only call me up when you’ve been down / It’s usually after one too many rounds / I play the fool, but won’t play it now / It’s time to clear the blur on these lines / Cause I don’t really want to talk about it / That doors closed you can say you love me / But you still gotta go”

To keep up with Tucker Beathard follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Christmas In June? Carrie Underwood Announces 2020 Christmas Album

Carrie Underwood Christmas

Photo Credit: Justin Aharoni for NYCountry Swag

During a virtual fan club party earlier today (6/3), Carrie Underwood announced that a Christmas album is on the way. Underwood shared the news exclusively with the more than 1,200 viewers gathered for a live-stream hosted by the artist’s Official Fan Club. The virtual party took the place of the in-person event held at the Grand Ole Opry house every year.

Underwood has recorded multiple Christmas songs throughout her fifteen-year career including, “O Holy Night”, “Do You Hear What I Hear”, “The First Noel”, and “ Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” but has yet to release a full holiday album. She shared her excitement with fans during the live broadcast, explaining that it’s been in the works for a long time.

In addition to the announcement, the virtual fan club party included an audience Q&A, a raffle, and an acoustic performance. The country superstar opted to perform non-single fan favorites from each album, including, “That’s Where It Is”, “You Won’t Find This”, “Someday When I Stop Loving You”, and “Thank God For Hometowns”.

Before signing off, Underwood acknowledged an important message in another song, and one that is desperately needed today. “God has given us the capacity to love each other,” said Underwood, before ending the live broadcast with a performance of her hit song, “Love Wins”.

An official announcement and release date for the Christmas album are expected later this year. In the meantime, fans can catch Underwood and husband Mike Fisher in the four-part mini-series, I Am Second every Wednesday at 8PM EST.
