The Cadillac Three: ‘Tabasco and Sweet Tea’ – Album Review

The Cadillac Three’s brand new album, TABASCO & SWEET TEA is available now, October 23rd on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dive deeper into the collection of songs in our full album review.

The Cadillac Three new album TABASCO & SWEET TEA

The Cadillac Three’s brand new album, TABASCO & SWEET TEA is available now

If fans were unclear of the sounds that influenced The Cadillac Three, vibes off their latest album TABASCO & SWEET TEA make clear the effect old rock favorites have had by effortlessly weaving that quality into this release.

Eleven songs of pure grit and rock with a contemporary country twist transport this collection to another realm of music; one that could gain them new fans. The band’s COUNTRY FUZZ came out in February, but together they knew they had more to give to their fans and deeper musical exploration to uncover.

Lead singer and guitarist Jaren Johnston describes the album as a science project, noting that it’s, “constantly moving in different directions,” and he could not have hit the nail on the head any better. Hip-inducing grooves and classic country lyrics constantly make you unsure of whether you’re at a rock concert or out on an old back road, but the marriage of the two creates an atmosphere of comfort. The fans can’t have in-person concerts right now, but jamming to this album gives you an iconic close replicate.

Written by Johnston, Alysa Vanderheym, and Ben Burgess, the opening track “Tabasco & Sweet Tea” is sure to make you hungry, with mentions of Blue Bell hot fudge, jerky, and sugar cane. Electric guitar solos and a solid backbeat make this a surefire dive bar listen.

The 80’s funk and hip hop fusion create just one of the hybrid sounds on this eleven-track album on “Head Over Wheels”. Expertly crafted bass lines underneath syncopated rhythms bring modern innovations to classic standards. Drummer Neil Mason goes on to say, “As we finished the last record, we knew we were only tapping the surface with songs like ‘The Jam’ for where we could go next musically and found ourselves inspired to dive into these sounds that we had never explored before as a band.”

Taking risks by traversing new territory has paid off in new types of sounds that fans can most definitely appreciate something different from a classic country song and sound.

“Bridges” has a rockin’ beat, but sneaks quite a life lesson in its lyrics, reminding listeners that all of our choices have consequences, and only by experience can you learn to decipher the ones meant for you.

“You’ve got to make your decision / Bridges, We live we learn which ones to cross which ones to burn”

“Money Ain’t Shit” starts off with a jammin’ guitar solo and deep gritty verse that transitions into a smooth belted chorus and a dynamic drop pause that is extremely captivating. “Turn the Radio On” follows suit with quick spoken verse lines that make for an easy fan sing-along at a concert.

As many of their fans are forced to explore new areas of their own lives, TC3 provides a soundtrack to which they did the same, turning over a new leaf in their sound and continuing to create. The feel may be influenced by the classics, conjuring a familiar feeling we all need right now to encourage forward motion. Anything but vintage though, the chic conversion of the old in TABASCO & SWEET TEA strike an innovative chord, projecting good vibes for the road ahead.

On October 27, TC3 will debut songs from TABASCO & SWEET TEA with a livestream for audiences in North America at 7:00P CT and UK/Europe at 20:00 CET.

The Cadillac Three Joins Forces with Second Harvest Food Bank

Here at New York Country Swag, we are big fans of The Cadillac Three not only for their music but for their unequivocal dedication to their fans and to their home state of Tennessee. In a time where touring is halted and live-streaming is at an all-time high, the men of TC3 found a way to use their platform to not only perform for fans but also give back to their community.

The Cadillac Three introduced and created ‘COUNTRY FUZZ PRESENTS GLOBAL LIVE STREAM SERIES,’ which supports Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee with ticketed shows from the Nashville venue, The Basement. We got a chance to chat with Neil from TC3 to learn more about how the band chose to get involved with this noble cause.

“I started doing a little reading about organizations here in Nashville,” he shared with us after a discussion with his wife about kids missing out on free lunch in schools this year, “What we came across was Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee.” Neil went on to share with us that partnering with an organization that already has the infrastructure to provide meals to families was a no brainer for him and his bandmates.

“We set a goal to provide 100 thousand meals in the next 100 days for the community,” he went on to add. Each dollar donated will provide four meals to a family in need, who may not have access to daily school lunches because of Covid-19. The band set out to raise $25,000 in 100 days for the cause, which will provide the 100,000 meals to families in need.

The highly curated concert series will run through September, with special guests already confirmed such as A Thousand Horses, Lauren Jenkins, and Tenille Arts, among many other talents. The series will give musicians an outlet to play live, fans a chance to listen to live music again, and of course, and perhaps most importantly – to raise money for a very important cause.

Last night, The Cadillac Three played their first show in six months and jammed to some of their biggest hits and some deep cuts, all while reminding fans of the bigger message to help them make it to their fundraising goal. Furthermore, the guys got to help give back to a venue that is still rebuilding from the tornado that hit Nashville in March, and of course the pandemic.

Find tickets to the upcoming virtual shows here.

If You Like The 1975, Then You’ll Love…

Sometimes country music seems to be a hit or miss when it comes to getting friends or family to listen. Sometimes there’s a pre-assumed notion that they won’t like what you’re going to put on. “It’s too twangy” – you can already hear the words circling in your mind. But like every genre, there are influences drawn from all other genres. In this case, rock influences from all over are incorporated in the following bands’ styles. In this week’s edition of “If You Like…, Then You’ll Love…,” The 1975.

The 1975 is an English rock band formed in 2002 changing the mold of current rock. They just released a new record entitled Notes On A Conditional Form two weeks ago. If you love rock music, here are the top three country bands that The 1975 fans will love!

The Cadillac Three:

The Cadillac Three, composed of Jaren Johnston, Kelby Ray, and Neil Mason, lay between the lines of a country music band and an American southern rock band. The blend of these influences produces an assemblage of blended country rock vibes. Their latest album Country Fuzz is infused with indie rock, electric guitar vibes, and DIY rock aesthetics.

To keep up with The Cadillac Three follow them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Old Dominion:

Old Dominion, covers a lot of horizons and it’s hard not to like them with their feel-good, summer-lovin’ bops. They’ve graced country radio with upbeat hits such as “Make It Sweet,” “Hotel Key,” “One Man Band,” as well as slow, emotional “Some People Do.” The 1975 rotates between upbeat songs and emotional ballads as well such as one of their singles “Somebody Else.”

To keep up with Old Dominion follow them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

LANCO:

LANCO, the calmer of the two bands above, charmed country radio with singles “Greatest Love Story” and “Born To Love You.” Excellent storytellers are their strong suit as well as The Cadillac Three and Old Dominion listed above.

The Cadillac Three Electrify New York City’s Bowery Ballroom

The Cadillac Three NYC

New Yorkers headed out in droves to the downtown venue, Bowery Ballroom last night (2/12) to support a country-rock band that has been playing together for over a decade. The Cadillac Three brought their unique sound, infectious spirit, and killer guitar skills to the stage, singlehandedly entertaining the crowd on a Tuesday night.

At approximately a quarter past eight, the energy in the room intensified as the trio, made up of Jaren Johnston, Kelby Ray, and Neil Mason finally took to the stage, immediately getting concertgoers to join in on their first song of the night “Hard Out Here.” The men kept it going with two more high-energy songs off their latest record Country Fuzz, “Blue El Camino” and “Slow Rollin.” Although the new album has only been out for a few days, country fans already knew the words to both of the tracks, proving how diehard the band’s fans truly are.

Throughout the night The Cadillac Three played a mix of songs off the new record, as well as, hits from their previous albums, including songs like “Peace Love & Dixie,” “I’m Rockin’,” and “Tennessee Mojo.” Of course, “Crackin’ Cold Ones With The Boys” and “Bury Me in My Boots” were also included in their killer set. It wasn’t until later in the night that the lead singer Jaren finally addressed the fans in the room.

“Big week for us man. Country Fuzz is out on the streets baby! Worldwide man! So we’re going to play some of that for you tonight, we’ve already played some of that, we’re gonna play some old shit, we’re gonna play some new shit.” Jaren went on to show his appreciation for The Cadillac Three fans adding, “We’re so thankful that y’all came out to support us tonight. Cheers!”

Despite starting with the hard-hitting tracks, the trio decided to slow it down, singing a love song to Johnston’s wife, “White Lightning”, as well as, two other slow-jams entitled “Whiskey and Smoke” and “Drunk Like You”.  Later on in the set, the trio made sure to sing the sultry, “Take Me to the Bottom” off their 2017 record Legacy. Although each deserved a spot in the show, “White Lightning” was definitely one of the highlights of the night, as fans showed their appreciation for the softer, more vulnerable side of the electrifying trio.

The Cadillac Three turned it up a notch yet again, playing more crowd favorites like “Hank & Jesus” and “American Slang.” The trio chose to end their performance on a high night, playing arguably one of their most successful songs to date, “The South,” an album cut with Florida Georgia Line, Dierks Bentley, and Mike Eli that snagged them an ACM Awards nomination, and gave The Cadillac Three the platform and recognition that they have always deserved.

“We’re going to keep playing until they kick us out of here!” exclaimed Jaren, and boy did they do just that, playing over 20 songs in what was an incredible night of music.

We are sure that the next time The Cadillac Three rolls back into town that they will be playing to an even larger number of New York country fans that truly appreciate their artistry, their talent, and their authenticity. To learn more about the trio and why we love them so much, check out our interview with the band below.

NYCS First Impression The Cadillac Three ‘COUNTRY FUZZ’

Country Fuzz

For the first time, since 2017, the country-rock trio, The Cadillac Three have a new album to celebrate! Today marks the release of the dynamic group’s fourth album COUNTRY FUZZ. The long-awaited LP features sixteen tracks that showcase the group’s undeniable talent and versatility, proving that it is a record for many types of country fans.

For fans that love the rowdy side of The Cadillac Three, the new release boasts a few fun-loving hits, including the lead single, “Crackin’ Cold Ones With The Boys” and “Hard Out Here For A Country Boy.” Both tracks lend themselves well to a high-energy live show and get your heart pumping in all the right ways. The latter features both Chris Janson and Travis Tritt. Other songs that scream The Cadillac Three vibes are ”Slow Rollin” and “Heat.”

The Nashville trio’s lead singer, Jaren Johnston shows off his writing chops, solo-writing two of the songs on the project, “Raise Hell” and “Long After Last Call.” While “Raise Hell” is a funky, upbeat tune, “Long After Last Call” features a heartfelt vocal delivery and simple instrumentation. The song may be a surprise to longtime TC3 fans, but it also may be one of their best.

Continuing to infuse elements of funk and soul into their notable county-rock sound, The Cadillac Three added songs like “The Jam” and “Blue El Camino” to their collection. Both songs showcase the trio’s musical mastery, as they play with steel guitars and drums. According to the band “the funkier aspects of this record is where [they] we’re wanting to go, but with big ol’ country hooks,” adding later, “because that is what we’re addicted to from growing up in Nashville. We love country songwriting and huge hooks.”

Other testaments to their exploration as a group include the brilliant “Labels” and “Back Home.” The former is an anthemic song about rejecting labels. The poignant track simply states “nobody wants to be a label” which can refer to many aspects of everyday life as both a human being and an artist. On the other hand, “Back Home” marks the first song the band has ever recorded that they haven’t co-written. Regardless, the nostalgic track, as well as, “Why Ya Gotta Go Out Like That” show a necessary softer side to the trio’s usual hard-hitting sound.

Of course, the trio makes sure to pay homage to whiskey, with two songs dedicated to the liquor, “Jack Daniel’s Heart” and “Whiskey And Smoke.” Both tracks have an enticing, rough-rousing quality to them, as the lead singer offers an interesting take on the widely sung about subject.

Somehow, The Cadillac Three manage to deliver a cohesive project that blurs genre lines, while still remaining true to their distinctly cultivated sound. We commend the passionate trio on their latest release. As the band says perfectly, “it’s not easy to land on something that is your own thing” but somehow they found their sweet spot on this record.

New Yorkers can catch The Cadillac Three next week when they play the Bowery Ballroom in New York City. For tickets and more information, head to thecadillacthree.com.

The Cadillac Three Release Country Rockin’ Single “Heat”

TC3 The Cadillac Three Heat

The Cadillac Three released their brand-new, country rockin’ single “Heat” in preparation for their new album Country Fuzz dropping this Friday, February 7th. This track follows a number of previously released samples such as “Hard Out Here For A Country Boy” and “Dirt Road Nights;” both features on the upcoming album. “Heat” is the last hoorah before the big anticipated release.

“Heat” is a vocoder stained, sensual song layered over intricate, yet powerful guitar fretwork combined with a simple drum beat that makes you wish you were also in the heat of the moment. Jaren Johnston, lead vocalist, tastefully documents that nothing is close to the heat that this girl brings. He sings: “Heat I ain’t ever felt // I finally got into hell // Her kiss keeps burnin’ me up // Keep bringin’ the heat // Girl, bring on the pain // That smoke, that whiskey rain // It’s too hard for me not to touch // Keep bringin’ the heat”

“We wrote ‘Heat’ in the back of the bus with Jimmy Robbins, Neal Mason, and Kelby, but that track was more of a Jimmy vibe so I had to take that and put it into a place that made sense for us but still was what Jimmy did,” Johnston spoke in an IGTV video, “A good sexy love song? C’mon, you win there.”

Kelby adds, potentially the best story of them all, “Heat is definitely one of my favorite songs. The funny thing is, we were coming up with ideas of which direction to take the song and I literally went inside to use the bathroom and I came out and they basically already finished the song. That’s the honest truth about how it was written.”

We love honesty.

The country-rock trio have kicked off their Country Fuzz Presents: The Cadillac Three tour and have added additional dates. Be sure to check out their dates here and New Yorkers can grab tickets to their February 12th show at Bowery Ballroom here.

The Cadillac Three “Hard Out Here For A Country Boy” with Travis Tritt & Chris Janson

By Briana Lopez

The Cadillac Three have released a new song “Hard Out Here For A Country Boy” that features “Good Vibes” singer Chris Janson and “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive” singer and 90s country icon, Travis Tritt. The upbeat, punchy, attitude-filled song is off their 16-track project COUNTRY FUZZ that will debut February 7, 2020, through Big Machine Records. Guitarist and lead vocalist Jaren Johnston along with drummer Neil Mason wrote the track alongside songwriter Jeremy Stover while on the road.

“We were playing some tour dates with Travis Tritt and The Charlie Daniels Band when “Hard Out Here For A Country Boy” was written. He was on the bus when we were playing through some songs and with his big signature twang belted out the line,” shared Johnston in a press release. “I grew up listening to Travis, and he’s a big reason I sing the way I do—that gritty twang thing. We knew he had to be on the song.” Mason added, “This song was kind of a jumping off point for the record and one of the first we cut. We’ve all been buddies for years and Chris heard the song playing in the background during a call with Jaren. It was cool that he quickly wanted to be a part of it and cut the vocal the next day.”

Late last year, the band released “Back Home” and “Long After Last Call” along with the news that they were heading out on tour to support the new music. Their forthcoming album also features the previously released singles “Crackin’ Cold Ones With The Boys” and “All The Makin’s Of A Saturday Night”.

Lead vocalist Jaren states, “When I think of Southern rock, I think of Lynyrd Skynyrd. When I think of country I think of Garth Brooks. This record and this band are all that. But it’s also ZZ Top and Jerry Reed. It’s Medeski Martin & Wood and Prince. There’s no better way to describe who we are other than Country Fuzz.”

To the group, COUNTRY FUZZ isn’t just the name of an album, tour or merch line, it’s their aesthetic and what defines them in both their music artistry and the lifestyle that is shared between the three musicians. “We’ve matured as musicians and as a band,” says bassist and steel guitar player Kelby Ray. “Our sound is second nature to us and that only comes from playing together for as long as we have.”

TC3’s sound is something that is unique and different from what is expected from a country group. “It’s not easy to land on something that is your own thing, but we’re proud to say we did that,” says Mason. “It works for us in any direction that we’re going. Country Fuzz is anything from a stripped-down ballad to a sludgy, riff-heavy rock song. And it’s also country-funk.

The Cadillac Three will get ready to hit the road on January 23, 2020, in Jackson, TN before heading off to Europe to headline the Country to Country Festival. New York City fans can catch them on February 12th, at Bowery Ballroom. For tickets and more info click here.

The Cadillac Three’s New Party Song “Crackin’ Cold Ones With The Boys”

Crackin' Cold Ones With The Boys The Cadillac Three

The Cadillac Three have returned with a new single for the first time since their last album in 2017 Legacy. “Crackin’ Cold Ones With The Boys” was released last Friday (4/12) and celebrates the life out on the road, performing for thousands of fans and then sitting back after a long night and enjoying a beverage. The track becomes a checklist for what’s needed to have a good time including tunes, ice, coolers, and cold beer.

As the weather finally starts to warm up, “Crackin’ Cold Ones With The Boys” will definitely put you in the mood for ice cold beers and summer nights. The song was written by band members, Jaren Johnston, Kelby Ray, and Neil Mason along with their road traveling crew consisting of Jefferson Brown, Benjamin Dunn, Brandon Wootten, and Chris Grainger while on the tour bus.

In the music video to accompany the new song, the trio is shown on stage at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit, performing the track, holding up beers with the crowd during their energetic live show. Check out the video below.

“Our band and crew have this ongoing joke about how it’s time to ‘crack some cold one with the boys’ so we ran with that,” drummer Neil Mason tells Rolling Stone.  The song was finished an hour or two later so … we drank some beers!”
