Mitchell Tenpenny & Seaforth Close out 2019 with Sold Out NYC Show

Last night, New Yorkers filled up the room at Webster Hall in New York City for the final show on the rising artist, Mitchell Tenpenny’s ‘Anything She Says Tour’ featuring exciting new duo, Seaforth. The sold-out show was the perfect way to cap off an awesome season of country music concerts, as we head into the new year.

One of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Seaforth were tasked with warming up the crowd. They exploded on to the stage, singing songs off their debut EP, including “Talk to Me,” “Good and Gone,” and “Taken Your Picture.” They even included an incredible cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams,” which showed off their vocal range, as well as, some unreleased tunes like “Colorblind.” In between songs, the duo entertained the audience with their humor, wit, and infectious personalities.

“We love Mitchell man. This is the first-ever U.S. tour that we’ve ever been on. We’ve become friends with Mitchell. Thank you guys for being here early,” the duo shared, just before joking, “Can you make some noise if you have no idea who we are?! We’re called Seaforth!” Of course, they went on to end their thirty-minute set with a crowd-pleasing sing-along to their debut single “Love That,” making sure to convert each and every person in that room a fan if they weren’t already!

After a brief intermission, headliner, Mitchell Tenpenny took the stage, accompanied by his band, which includes his younger brother, Rafe. The show was definitely a departure from our 2017 Swag Session, where Times Square was the backdrop to his performance! Kicking things off right away, the singer immediately performed two catchy songs off his debut record, “Somebody Ain’t You” and “Goner.”

“This is so fucking awesome. Thank you for being here with us. This means the world. It’s our last night of the tour of this year. Thank you for selling this place out. This is so cool man, for real, this is really my dream, thanks to you guys. I’m so, so grateful for that,” Tenpenny expressed just before singing his old-school song, the clever “Mixed Drinks” followed by “Truck I Drove In High School.” Fans showed their appreciation for his talent by singing the lyrics back to him.

Tenpenny continued to keep fans on their toes, performing a mix of more songs off Telling All My Secrets like “I Get the Picture” and “Somebody’s Got Me” and unreleased songs that are slated to come out in 2020. He performed both “Can’t Go to Church Anymore” and a song he wrote with one of our favorites, HARDY called “To Us It Did.” According to the entertainer, the former is about “Growing up in a small town, where everyone goes to the same church. If you break up with someone, what’s the first thing you want to do?! You want to avoid seeing them at all costs. You go to the same church, well guys, where are you going to see them?!” Clearly, the song resonated with fans, who cheered when it ended.

Although the set was filled with highlights, there were two standout moments that were starkly different from one another. The first came when Tenpenny brought Seaforth back to the stage to sing their brand new single to country radio and tour namesake, “Anything She Says”. The performance was not only entertaining but hysterical, as the men through blow-up Judy dolls into the audience as they sang. “Anything She Says” is clearly a hit in the making!

The other standout was one of the most heartfelt moments of the night. The singer vulnerably shared his own life experiences with the audience. “We lost our daddy to cancer. That’s why I wrote this song. Cause our daddy never turned us away from any of the dreams we ever had. He let us pursue this crazy thing called music and y’all have given it a reality,” he explained, “I know my daddy’s watching down on us thanks to you guys, so thank you so much. I just want to dedicate this to anyone who’s lost anybody; I don’t care if it’s a family member, a friend, or someone you barely know. It affects everyone differently. Don’t let anyone tell you how to grieve.” Tenpenny went on to sing the poignant “Walk Like Him” with just his brother sharing the stage with him.

The singer-songwriter wrapped up his show with the infectious, “Alcohol You Later”, his debut number one single “Drunk Me”, and the crowd-favorite “Bitches”, leaving fans in Manhattan in awe of the incredible night of music that they were just a part of. As fans of Tenpenny for such a long time, it was outstanding to see the sold-out New York City fanbase not only singing along to his major hits, but to every lyric of every album cut, including songs that were released prior to his album. We look forward to watching big things continue to happen for one of our day one artists.

Mitchell Tenpenny Announces Headlining Tour with Special Guests Seaforth

It’s Christmas in July! One of our 2019 Artists to Watch and Swag Session alumni, Mitchell Tenpenny announced this morning that he is heading out on his very first headlining tour and bringing duo from Australia, Seaforth as his supporting act. Along with this huge announcement, Tenpenny released “Anything She Says” which features Seaforth.

The tour kicks off October 10th in Nashville and ends right here in New York City at the newly renovated Webster Hall. Tickets go on sale Friday, August 2nd at 10 AM and you can grab them at mitchell10penny.com.

We first featured Tenpenny back in December 0f 2017 when he performed for one of our very first Swag Sessions in Times Square, months before signing his record deal with Sony Nashville and releasing his debut album, “Telling All My Secrets”. Watch the performance and interview below.

More recently, Tenpenny sold-out Mercury Lounge and had the packed room singing along to his hits including, “Drunk Me” and “Alcohol You Later”.

His opening act, Seaforth talked with NYCountry Swag recently about growing up in Australia, their wedding singer days and their EP ‘Love That’. Read our full interview with the hilarious Tom and Mitch here.

Mitchell Tenpenny & Seaforth Team Up on “Anything She Says”

Almost two years ago we introduced you to a rising talent that we believed in. Mitchell Tenpenny played for us in the middle of NYC’s Time Square as an undiscovered artist in one of our Swag Sessions. Flash forward a year later, he released his debut album, Telling All My Secrets, which garnered his first number one hit, “Drunk Me,” as well as, landed himself coveted opening gigs on tour with the likes of Old Dominion and Rascal Flatts. Today, Tenpenny continues his incredible momentum by releasing a brand new song featuring one of our Swag Spotlights, Seaforth called “Anything She Says.”

Laced with clever wordplay and a catchy chorus, “Anything She Says” is clearly an M10 song. It would fit in perfectly in the catalog of songs off the singer-songwriters debut album, while still having a more mature and elevated sound. It begins with an enticing guitar rift, much like his smash hit “Drunk Me,” which is sure to add to the recognizability of the tune. The love song is Tenpenny’s take on being smitten by a girl and wanting to give her his all, most likely inspired by his beautiful girlfriend.

Throughout the song, Tenpenny and the men of Seaforth trade verses. Tenpenny sings the first verse and chorus lamenting the sweet sentiments, “I would wreck all of my plans / Drive until we hit the sand / Catch a sunburn, while she tans / I would do, I would do / I’d do whatever she likes / Give her Christmas in July / She ain’t gotta tell me twice / I would do, I would do, anything / She says.” Seaforth goes on to add, “She got all my attention / She knows I’m always listening, hanging off her lips / Yeah she got me like” about their own muse.

After just one listen, this song is sure to be stuck in your head and a staple in your music library!

We caught Tenpenny back in May at Hulu Theatre in Madison Square Garden, when he opened up for Old Dominion and Jordan Davis for a sold-out NYC crowd of fans. It was definitely an epic night of music! For more tour information and a chance to see Tenpenny live, head to mitchell10penny.com.

Who Is Seaforth? The Story Behind His Journey to Country Music

Who is Seaforth? The duo joined us to chat about his journey to country music. Get to know the rising star here…

The Beginning:

Our Swag Spotlight this week shines on one of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Seaforth. Tom Jordan and Mitch Thompson were born in a town in Sydney called Seaforth in Australia. They went to the same preschool, played on the soccer team there and have been friends their entire lives. “We have been making music together for what seems like forever, we are super excited and happy to be musical pals and best mates,” they tell us.

Thompson explains that growing up, their influences were all types of music including ACDC and Led Zeppelin but that his mom was a huge Keith Urban fan. “Discovering Keith was an absolute lightbulb moment for both of us,” he tells us. They were making music independently at first but once they wrote their first song together, they quickly realized that one of them could do what the other couldn’t, creating the perfect equation for a duo.

Jordan tells us how they were organically writing country music and knew that one day the end goal was to make it to Nashville, Tennesee and immerse themselves in the music industry and culture. They made the trek over the ocean to Music City five years ago, falling in love with the town immediately. “We would play wedding gigs in Sydney, save up money, fly to Nashville, spend everything, come back broke, start doing gigs again until we managed to get our record deal with Sony.” They racked up the frequent flyer miles traveling back and forth and they joked that they just really loved that long flight. “We played our last wedding gig the week before we moved and I think we cried more than the bride and the groom,” Jordan laughed.

The Turning Point:

The duo co-wrote all four songs on their debut EP, including “Love That”, the debut single that will head to radio later this month. Written by the duo with Daniel Ross and Michael Whitworth, they tell us how it is all four of their first singles heading to the country radio airwaves. “Love That” is one of the songs they wrote on one of their very first trips to Nashville so they are so proud to see it on their EP and to have it be the song that is their introduction to the market.

Being songwriters in Nashville, Seaforth is so happy to be able to learn from some of the best writers in the country. “I feel like to improve at anything it’s best to surround yourself with people that are better than you and Nashville is the home of people that are better than you,” Thompson says. “Everyone here is so talented, it is such a huge influence and inspiration to us to write better songs.”

Today:

We asked the duo for a fun fact that our followers would love to know about them, Jordan tells us that he is ‘globophobic’ which means he is afraid of balloons. “When I was young I was blowing one up and it popped and it was really loud a since then I have been terrified of them,” he tells us. Thompson laughs and tells us that his fun fact is he can actually floss a spaghetti noodle through his nose and out his mouth.

Seaforth has a jam-packed summer with festivals and gigs promoting their new music and their single “Love That”. They will be playing CMAfest in just a few short weeks and then they will be playing at Lake Shake in Chicago in July, on the exact same day as Keith Urban, one of the main reasons they are in this industry. The excitement for that festival is apparent in their voices as they tell us all about it. It was also just announced today that Seaforth is nominated for Discovery Artist of the Year at the 2019 MusicRow Awards. WME & Sony Music Nashville Present: A Celebration of Women’s History Month

On Monday night, Sony Music Nashville and booking agency WME teamed up to present “A Celebration of Women’s History Month,” a night benefitting She Is The Music, a non-profit organization that focuses on increasing the number of women in music and gender equality in the industry. The night’s spotlight artists were Carlton Anderson, Rachel Wammack, Seaforth, Robert Counts, and Hannah Dasher; some of Sony’s newest artists on the roster. And hosting the night were beloved media personalities and journalists, Hunter Kelly and Ashley Eicher, the duo behind the All Our Favorite People Podcast.

WME booking agent, Carrie Murphy, was invited to start off the night by introducing the crowd to what She Is The Music was, and how the organization creates a platform for women to hone their craft and be supported on their journey in the music industry. “Girls can’t be what they can’t see,” shared Murphy.

The night took us on a chronological musical journey through country music’s finest women’s hits through the decades, from the 1960s all the way to 2010. Kelly and Eicher not only hosted the night but provided valuable summarized facts on social issues and the songs’ commercial success in each focused era.

Robert Counts

Kicking the night off was Robert Counts, who covered Loretta Lynn’s hit song, “You Ain’t Woman Enough To Take My Man,” that was originally recorded in 1965. “This might get weird…I feel weird,” joked Counts before he sang. “[Loretta] taught me a lot about songwriting. She has done a lot for my career [and] is a huge influence.”

Up next they focused on the 1970s, a time period where the feminist movement took place. In fact, because of the inundation of this movement, TIME awarded its “Man of the Year” award to “American Women” in 1975. Covering Dolly Parton’s second single and one of Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” was Rachel Wammack and Seaforth. The soaring harmonies from both acts almost gave “Jolene” a hauntingly different version that’s been never heard before.

Hannah Dasher

The 1980s was a time when women were not getting fair wages, and part of the movement against inequality was Parton’s “9 to 5,” which was featured on the movie of the same title. The movie aptly depicted the social circumstances women were in the and workforce of that era. Hannah Dasher lent her voice to a rocking, feet-tapping cover of it.

Still keeping it in the 80s, Carlton Anderson came up on stage to pay tribute to Barbara Mandrell and her song that became a hit at the height of the urban cowboy craze, or as Kelly jokingly called it, “the early version of bro-country.” Anderson, the most traditional country-leaning act of the night, undeniably shined in his element as he sang Mandrell’s 1981 hit song, “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool.”

The next half of the night transitioned to the beloved 1990s onwards, and it was that era that saw a promising record number of women elected into congress. Dasher returned on stage to cover Reba’s “You Lie,” with Big Machine Record’s Dan Smalley, who she introduced as “the closest thing to Vince Gill.” Following their performance was Anderson, who came back with his rendition of Patty Loveless’ “You Don’t Know Who I Am.” “I grew up listening to this song. […] When you figure out what it’s really about, it kinda hits you in the chest, and I think that’s the beauty of this genre.”

Perhaps two of the biggest highlights of the night were both from Wammack. The Muscle Shoals, Alabama native shared how several people told her when she first moved to Nashville that she “sounded like Deana Carter when [she] spoke.” Wammack played the keys and sang two of country’s timeless ballads of the 90s: Carter’s “Strawberry Wine” and LeAnn Rimes’ “How Do I Live Without You.” Introducing the latter song, Kelly shared the history of its release, and how two of country’s women, Rimes and Trisha Yearwood, both had released the single at the same time. Unsurprisingly, the 23-year-old really captivated the crowd as soon as she started playing.

Seaforth

One of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Seaforth’s Mitch Thompson and Tom Jordan were back, and gave a refreshing cover of Shania Twain’s 1997 hit, “You’re Still The One.” Again, the duo’s harmonies packed a punch and proved why they’re Nashville’s next biggest Australia transplants in country music.

Closing the nostalgia-filled night was Counts, whose unique and raspy delivery invigorated the wistfulness of Miranda Lambert’s first number one song and her fastest-rising single to date, “The House That Built Me.”

What a night that took everyone a trip down memory lane, visiting decades of iconic hit songs from trail-blazing women in country music! If there’s one thing we’re hoping for after the show, it’s that somehow, these young acts record each of their spins on the songs they covered and share it with the world. One thing’s for certain: Sony’s newest exceptionally-talented class of acts are here to stay.

NYCountry Swag’s 2019 Artists to Watch

The New York Country Swag team loves to support rising artists and introduce our followers to the best new music in the genre. Since our inception three years ago we have named rising stars like Russell Dickerson, Luke Combs, Brett Young, Jordan Davis, and Jimmie Allen as our Artists to Watch. Check out our picks in 2017 and 2018 before checking out the 10 artists we picked to have a huge 2019 below.

10. Austin Burke – This Arizona native moved to Nashville when he was 19 years old and has been working towards putting independent music out ever since. His single “Whole Lot In Love” has garnered over 46 million streams on Spotify, making him one of the most successful independent artists on the platform. His latest single “Slower” is a smooth, love song written for his longtime girlfriend. Fans of Brett Young will love this rising singer-songwriter.

9. Abby Anderson – One of our Swag Spotlights in 2018, Abby Anderson released her debut EP, “I’m Good” back in September with Black River Records and packed a whole lot of sass her five-song project. The first single released, “Make Him Wait” however teaches women of every age about the respect they deserve in a relationship. Her bubbly personality and powerful vocal ability made her a standout to our team right from the beginning.

8. Riley Green – During our Live Swag Session with Riley Green he sang his debut single “There Was a Girl” and explained how his life has changed over the past year. Signing with Big Machine Label Group and releasing his single along with a music video has gained him a huge fanbase. He released a four-song EP back in June keeping the traditional country sound while appealing to modern country fans as well.

7. Brandon Ratcliff – Closing out 2018 with a huge announcement, Brandon Ratcliff will be touring with Brett Young and Kelsea Ballerini on the Miss Me More Tour. If you haven’t listened to his song “Rules of Breaking Up” (produced by Shane McAnally) you will love his blend of R&B and new wave country. Fans of Thomas Rhett and Kane Brown, Brandon Ratcliff is your next favorite artist.

6. Seaforth – Mitch Thompson and Tom Jordan make up the new duo Seaforth and are the latest Australian transplants to Nashville. Their friendship spans over the past two decades and these singer-songwriters just released two tracks that are already causing quite a buzz in the country music world. We featured “Talk To Me” as one of our December Picks and are loving their vibe. Time will tell if they can garner the same success as Keith Urban and more recently fellow Australian, Morgan Evans. If you love Dan + Shay you will certainly love Seaforth.

5. Kassi Ashton – One of our most unique picks this year is Kassi Ashton, small-town native who busted out and is making huge waves not only in the country community but on music in general. Her distinct style, personality, and songwriting set her apart from the glitz and glam female country artists as she sings about her real-life experiences and doesn’t sugarcoat anything. As we anxiously await her debut project, take a listen to “Taxidermy” a hilarious threat to anyone who does her wrong.

4. Teddy Robb – One of the artists we are most excited about in 2019 is our Swag Spotlight Teddy Robb. Just recently signed to Monument Records, Robb is working with some of Nashville’s best songwriters to create his first project. Be on the lookout for a brand new song tomorrow but in the meantime check out “Lead Me On” which has been streamed over 4 million times and recaps from songwriter nights the rising star hosted in Nashville.

3. Filmore – At the end of 2018, Filmore released a brand new single “Heart’s Having a Hard Time”, a follow up to his biggest hit yet, “Slower”. Another Missouri native with undeniable swagger, Filmore has often been compared to Sam Hunt as he combines cool R&B vibes with country songwriting. He has been on the Nashville scene for a few years and we think 2019 will be his year to really break out.

2. Tenille Townes – Straight from her small hometown in Canada, Tenille Townes has already experienced a ton of success since her move to Nashville. The thought-provoking singer-songwriter joined Little Big Town and Miranda Lambert on one of the best tours this past year (The Bandwagon Tour) and her unique voice is recognizable in the genre. In our Swag Spotlight interview back in April, Townes told us about Big Hearts for Big Kids, an organization she is involved with that has raised over 1.5 million dollars since its inception just under a decade ago. Between her love for philanthropy and her rare ability to convey stories, Townes is in for another successful year.

Mitchell Tenpenny – If you have been following NYCountry Swag you know our love for Mitchell Tenpenny. From the moment we recorded a Live Swag Session with him in Times Square back in 2017, we have been fans of his songwriting as well as his powerhouse voice. To close out 2018, Tenpenny released his debut album, Telling All My Secrets and hit the number one spot on the country charts with “Drunk Me”. We attended his very first sold-out NYC headlining show in August and it was incredible to hear the entire audience sing along to every song. We are looking forward to seeing even more success from the recording artist in 2019.
