On a Friday where throwback songs being updated is prevalent, Brooks & Dunn released REBOOT, a compilation of their biggest hits reimagined as duets with new country artists, Mitchell Tenpenny has released his own new spin on a classic. Tim McGraw’s “Just To See You Smile” was released in 1997 and not only hit the top of the charts but set what was then a record for being the longest-running single on the Billboard country chart since the inception of Nielsen SoundScan back in 1990.
The track written by Tony Martin and Mark Nesler was originally on McGraw’s album Everywhere and helped catapult the country artist into the superstardom where he remains today. The story is tried and true, doing everything in your power to make the one you love happy.
“Just to see you smile / I’d do anything , that you wanted me to / And all is said and done , I’d never count the cost / It’s worth all that’s lost, just to see you smile”
Whether its moving to a new state to allow them to follow their dreams, letting them have the space they asked for or letting them go when you know they’ll be happy with someone else, the heartbreaking tale is a classic. Tenpenny who grew up in Nashville calls the song one of his favorites to cover on Instagram. He takes the timeless song and slows it down, adds his unique vocal runs to really update the track. Hopefully his incredible rendition will make his set list while on the Make It Sweet Tour with Old Dominion and Jordan Davis. The tour hits the New York area twice, May 17th at Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden and May 25th at Bald Hill Amphitheatre on Long Island.
“Just To See You Smile” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

As a follow up to his debut single, and very first number one, “Drunk Me”, one of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Mitchell Tenpenny continues to change the narrative on drinking by releasing “Alcohol You Later”, a midtempo jam that has been a fan favorite at his live shows.
Last summer when Tenpenny sat down with NASH FM 94.7 for their Up Close & Country at Stage 17, he told the audience “So, like a lot of my song are written from experiences at a bar in Nashville called Losers…So I was sitting there and as a songwriter, you are always kind of just listening to people, trying to come up with ideas cause we write like every single day if we are in town and I just remember hearing this really country guy sitting right next to me and he just told his buddy, he was just saying goodbye but he said “Alright buddy, I’ll call ya later”, and it sounded like he said Alcohol You Later, and I wrote it down really quick.” He went into the room the next day with that hook, and so, “Alcohol You Later” was born.
As the song arrives at country radio and climbs the charts, Tenpenny released a killer video yesterday to accompany the tune, directed by award-winning video director TK McKamy. The filtered video transitions from an empty bar to Tenpenny at home, singing about his on again off again fling that he will most likely be calling after a night of being out. As geometric shapes fly across the screen bringing you from one scene to the next, the colored filters are intriguing and add an interesting element to the visual. Check out the video below.

We’re bringing you stories from women who are chasing their dreams and building a life that they love with New York Country Swag’s, “Woman of the Month.”
Each month, we will highlight a different female pursuing her passions. Introducing you to women who are taking risks, working relentlessly and turning their dreams into reality. These are empowering women who serve as role models and should be celebrated.
For February, we chose Kristen Ashley who hails from Trussville, Alabama, currently working with one of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Mitchell Tenpenny. Ashley tells us during our recent phone interview that music was always very important to her, she was always the friend who would burn CDs and loved discovering new artists. “Country was definitely my heart but I also loved rap and sometimes I liked listening to Christian music, it was about the way the songs made me feel,” she tells us. “I loved listening to album cuts, I started learning the songwriter’s names, I was more inspired about Lori McKenna, Hillary Lindsey, Shane McAnally, and Luke Laird. I was so excited about that part of it, it wasn’t just the artist.”
Just like many of us, growing up she wasn’t aware that there is an entire industry behind the music we hear on the radio or we see at concerts. That all changed on her 15th birthday when her mother surprised her with an opportunity to be in one of Brantley Gilbert’s music videos. Once she arrived on set, she met another Woman of the Month, JoJamie Hahr, and Leah Rhodes who’s husband was at the time, Manager of A&R at Warner/Chappell Nashville.
Opening her eyes to a brand new world, Ashley started to fall in love with the idea of working in the music industry, specifically publishing. Those connections with Leah and Blain Rhodes quickly turned into networking opportunities and when she moved to Nashville to attend Belmont University, she already had an upper hand, knowing people who were successful in the industry.
While attending Belmont University, she landed an internship at SB21, an independent music publishing company in Nashville where she learned about the details of a publishing company. By chance at CMAFest the following year, she was introduced to Jennifer Johnson at The Song Factory and her dream of working in publishing came to fruition. During her time there, she worked with Jon Pardi, Dillon Carmichael, and Ashley McBryde.
She explains that one of her favorite moments of her career so far was arranging Ashley McBryde to come to town and write with Jeremy Bussey. “She didn’t know anyone in my circle, and I just knew that she and Jeremy Bussey would hit it off and the very first time they wrote together they wrote “Girl Goin’ Nowhere” so that is my claim to fame,” she says of the Grammy-nominated song.
Then in November of 2015, she met a new singer-songwriter, a Nashville native named Mitchell Tenpenny. She started booking Tenpenny writes and working to help nurture his career, and then her boss at The Song Factory, Jennifer Johnson decided to start her own record label, Riser House and Tenpenny was the flagship artist. “I was working closely with Mitchell, I knew who to call for different aspects of his career. We formed a mutual respect for each other and I started doing the management stuff but without those intentions. Fast forward another year, I started booking shows for Mitchell, I ended up being Mitchell’s point person,” Ashley explains.
Eventually, Ashley made the decision to form 11/10 Management signing Mitchell Tenpenny as her first client. She works closely with JT Pratt, RLM’s Coran Capshaw, and Enzo DeVincenzo and Haley McLemore of 377 Management. She tells us that she is so happy to have an experienced team around her to turn to.
Haley McLemore, Kristen Ashley, Mitchell Tenpenny, Coran Capshaw
Tenpenny released his debut studio album, Telling All My Secrets last December, and is currently on tour with Old Dominion on their ‘Make It Sweet’ Tour. He landed his very first number one song in December as well with “Drunk Me”.
Part of the day to day job of being his manager includes handling every aspect of his career. “There are a million different things going on in one time, getting ready for the Old Dominion Tour, ordering a new backdrop, designing new merch, getting a trailer made, meeting with his business manager, meetings with Sony to talk strategy for this year, meeting with his booking agents to confirm shows,” she tells us. “My day is never the same, it’s always different which I love.”
We asked what advice she would give to young people looking to work in the music industry, she says “Don’t care too much about the name of the company you intern for or work for, it’s about where you will get the opportunity to work, learn and grow,” Ashley says. “If you are at a smaller company, you learn so much so quickly. If it wasn’t for my internship I would have fallen on my face when I got my first job. If you have an opportunity to work, get paid, do what you love and be around good people, take the opportunity.”
She worked hard from the minute she knew what she wanted to do with her life. “I think the reason I did get to where I am, I wasn’t expecting anything, if I see that something is missing or something needs to be done, I am someone who does it,” she says. “I knew Mitchell was talented, I knew he needed to have his shows booked and his travel booked and I did it, without expecting anything in return. If you believe in someone, help people and in return, you will be taken care of.”

In between promoting his debut album, Telling All My Secrets and playing sold-out shows, rising country star (and one of NYCS’s 2019 Artist to Watch), Mitchell Tenpenny made his way to Hollywood Boulevard in California last night, to accomplish yet another great feat. For the first time, the singer-songwriter performed on late night television, as part of the Jimmy Kimmel LIVE! concert series sponsored by Mercedes-Benz.
With the record in hand, host, Jimmy Kimmel gave Tenpenny a warm-welcome to the outdoor stage, “This is his album, Telling All My Secrets. Here with the song, “Drunk Me,” Mitchell Tenpenny!.” Immediately following the crowd went wild, as the entertainer emerged on stage, singing the opening lyrics to his Number 1 hit and debut single, “Drunk Me.”
Backed by a four-piece band and with a guitar in hand, Tenpenny clearly was having the time of his life on stage, sharing a big grin with the audience about half-way through his performance. The singer-songwriter showcased his range and talent throughout the entire performance, even singing the last note acapella. Check out the impressive full performance of the catchy tune below.
In typical LIVE! fashion, Tenpenny sang one more song for fans that was not aired as part of the broadcast. The recording artist performed his next single, “Alcohol You Later.” Tenpenny even gave his Instagram followers a sneak peek of his rehearsal, as he geared up for this performance. Like with his previous performance, the singer-songwriter added some flavor and twists to “Alcohol You Later”, showcasing its immense potential as a radio single. Watch the full episode here.
Tenpenny is primed for the biggest year of his career. He is a supporting act on Old Dominion’s ‘Make It Sweet Tour,’ beginning in late February. The tour makes its way to the New York area twice, including to New York City’s Hulu Theater on May 17th and to the Pennysaver Amphitheater on May 25th. Tickets go on sale to the general public, this Friday. For a full list of Tenpenny’s shows, head to mitchell10penny.com.

We have championed rising country star, Mitchell Tenpenny’s success for over a year now. Back in 2017, we hosted a Live Swag Session with the artist, who at the time didn’t even have a record deal. Flash forward, just one year later, and the singer-songwriter sold out his NYC headlining show, dropped his debut album Telling All My Secrets, and hit the number one spot on the country charts with his smash hit “Drunk Me.” Continuing the momentum into 2019, Tenpenny performed his single on NBC’s TODAY, this morning, as part of the Citi Concert Series, marking his first time on the show.
He was introduced by the co-anchors by saying, “Country singer-songwriter, Mitchell Tenpenny is poised for a big year. He ended 2018 by releasing his major label debut album and he’s not slowing down,” Tenpenny took some time to chat with the hosts, before delivering an epic performance of “Drunk Me.” When asked how he’s feeling about his journey thus far, the powerhouse singer explained, “We’re still living the dream. We have to pinch ourselves sometimes. This is crazy, we’re here in NYC with y’all.” Right after the sentiment, one of the hosts gave Tenpenny another “pinch me moment,” as he handed him his plaque that signified that “Drunk Me” went platinum.
Tenpenny, clearly blown-away, stated he was “speechless,” but still was able to deliver a cool rendition of the song with a four-piece band to back him. Donning, a ball-cap and a guitar, the singer belted the lyrics, adding some unique twists and having some fun throughout the entirety of the performance. Check out the clip below to watch!
The New York Country Swag 2019 Artist to Watch wraps up his album-release shows this week. Tenpenny heads to Luke Bryan’s ‘Crash my Playa’ country music festival in Mexico at the end of the month, just before beginning his opening-gig on Old Dominion ‘Make It Sweet Tour,’ at the end of February. Make sure to keep up with the breakthrough artist via his social media.

The New York Country Swag team loves to support rising artists and introduce our followers to the best new music in the genre. Since our inception three years ago we have named rising stars like Russell Dickerson, Luke Combs, Brett Young, Jordan Davis, and Jimmie Allen as our Artists to Watch. Check out our picks in 2017 and 2018 before checking out the 10 artists we picked to have a huge 2019 below.
10. Austin Burke – This Arizona native moved to Nashville when he was 19 years old and has been working towards putting independent music out ever since. His single “Whole Lot In Love” has garnered over 46 million streams on Spotify, making him one of the most successful independent artists on the platform. His latest single “Slower” is a smooth, love song written for his longtime girlfriend. Fans of Brett Young will love this rising singer-songwriter.
9. Abby Anderson – One of our Swag Spotlights in 2018, Abby Anderson released her debut EP, “I’m Good” back in September with Black River Records and packed a whole lot of sass her five-song project. The first single released, “Make Him Wait” however teaches women of every age about the respect they deserve in a relationship. Her bubbly personality and powerful vocal ability made her a standout to our team right from the beginning.
8. Riley Green – During our Live Swag Session with Riley Green he sang his debut single “There Was a Girl” and explained how his life has changed over the past year. Signing with Big Machine Label Group and releasing his single along with a music video has gained him a huge fanbase. He released a four-song EP back in June keeping the traditional country sound while appealing to modern country fans as well.
7. Brandon Ratcliff – Closing out 2018 with a huge announcement, Brandon Ratcliff will be touring with Brett Young and Kelsea Ballerini on the Miss Me More Tour. If you haven’t listened to his song “Rules of Breaking Up” (produced by Shane McAnally) you will love his blend of R&B and new wave country. Fans of Thomas Rhett and Kane Brown, Brandon Ratcliff is your next favorite artist.
6. Seaforth – Mitch Thompson and Tom Jordan make up the new duo Seaforth and are the latest Australian transplants to Nashville. Their friendship spans over the past two decades and these singer-songwriters just released two tracks that are already causing quite a buzz in the country music world. We featured “Talk To Me” as one of our December Picks and are loving their vibe. Time will tell if they can garner the same success as Keith Urban and more recently fellow Australian, Morgan Evans. If you love Dan + Shay you will certainly love Seaforth.
5. Kassi Ashton – One of our most unique picks this year is Kassi Ashton, small-town native who busted out and is making huge waves not only in the country community but on music in general. Her distinct style, personality, and songwriting set her apart from the glitz and glam female country artists as she sings about her real-life experiences and doesn’t sugarcoat anything. As we anxiously await her debut project, take a listen to “Taxidermy” a hilarious threat to anyone who does her wrong.
4. Teddy Robb – One of the artists we are most excited about in 2019 is our Swag Spotlight Teddy Robb. Just recently signed to Monument Records, Robb is working with some of Nashville’s best songwriters to create his first project. Be on the lookout for a brand new song tomorrow but in the meantime check out “Lead Me On” which has been streamed over 4 million times and recaps from songwriter nights the rising star hosted in Nashville.
3. Filmore – At the end of 2018, Filmore released a brand new single “Heart’s Having a Hard Time”, a follow up to his biggest hit yet, “Slower”. Another Missouri native with undeniable swagger, Filmore has often been compared to Sam Hunt as he combines cool R&B vibes with country songwriting. He has been on the Nashville scene for a few years and we think 2019 will be his year to really break out.
2. Tenille Townes – Straight from her small hometown in Canada, Tenille Townes has already experienced a ton of success since her move to Nashville. The thought-provoking singer-songwriter joined Little Big Town and Miranda Lambert on one of the best tours this past year (The Bandwagon Tour) and her unique voice is recognizable in the genre. In our Swag Spotlight interview back in April, Townes told us about Big Hearts for Big Kids, an organization she is involved with that has raised over 1.5 million dollars since its inception just under a decade ago. Between her love for philanthropy and her rare ability to convey stories, Townes is in for another successful year.
Mitchell Tenpenny – If you have been following NYCountry Swag you know our love for Mitchell Tenpenny. From the moment we recorded a Live Swag Session with him in Times Square back in 2017, we have been fans of his songwriting as well as his powerhouse voice. To close out 2018, Tenpenny released his debut album, Telling All My Secrets and hit the number one spot on the country charts with “Drunk Me”. We attended his very first sold-out NYC headlining show in August and it was incredible to hear the entire audience sing along to every song. We are looking forward to seeing even more success from the recording artist in 2019.
Let us know what other artists you think will have a big year and which new music you are looking forward to in the new year!

Back on December 1st, 2017 New York Country Swag hosted a Swag Session with a singer-songwriter, Mitchell Tenpenny. Since then, New York City fans have sold out the venue where he played in August 2018 and have anticipated this record along with the rest of the country. The Nashville native started like most country singers, honing his voice in the choir at church but then turned to hard-core rock music as he was the lead singer or “screamer” in his high school band. Eventually, his songwriting skills led him to try out a different genre, the one where he is now gearing up for the release of his album, Telling All My Secrets.
Telling All My Secrets, available everywhere today is a culmination of years of Tenpenny writing and preparing for his first major-label release. All 12 tracks were co-written by the rising country artist, and tell his unique story to country music fans. Previously releasing a self-titled EP back in February, followers of Tenpenny are already familiar with four of the songs that made the cut for the full-length project, including “Truck I Drove in High School”, “Alcohol You Later”, the wildly popular, “Bitches” and his debut single to country radio “Drunk Me” which has just hit the number one spot on the charts.
Tenpenny fills out the rest of the project with tracks that are relatable while his incredible, unique vocal ability set him apart from the other acts popular in the genre right now. Telling All My Secrets has break-up songs like the mid-tempo “Somebody Ain’t You” which focuses on not being able to forget your ex and move on or “I Get The Picture” tells the story of seeing your ex with someone new, an occurrence that is all too common thanks to social media. Referencing in the lyrics “It’s like you wanted me to really feel that heartbreak / Like you knew I’d see the writing on your wall” which could easily mean a Facebook wall and “And if a picture is worth a thousand words baby, you just said it all / It’s like you want the whole wide world to see you’re happy / Like you need to prove to me that you’ve moved on / and while I’m burning every real one that you left me, this one won’t get gone” hinting at a digital photo on Instagram.
The rising star shines, however, on the tracks that admit vulnerability when in a relationship. “Somebody’s Got Me” and “Telling All My Secrets” highlight his songwriting abilities while letting go of stereotypes that men often face. The former has touching lines like “Making sure she feels safe in arms / fighting for the flame when your feeling that spark” while the latter encompasses Tenpenny’s urge to let the world in on his inner workings, a soulful songwriter not afraid to expose his true feelings to a soulful vibe.
Tenpenny’s delivery throughout the album is impeccable, whether singing about his heart breaking or confessing he is completely smitten, you believe every emotion is genuine.
Telling All My Secrets is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

In 2018, country music saw a dynamic shift at the top of the charts, with radio no longer being ruled by the old guard. While the likes of Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Thomas Rhett, and Old Dominion all had #1 hits this year, the charts saw an onslaught of chart-toppers hits by country newbies. In fact, there were five new artists who scored #1’s with their debut singles, including Jordan Davis, Jimmie Allen, Russell Dickerson, Mitchell Tenpenny, and Morgan Evans.
Russell Dickerson: “Yours”
Despite originally being released digitally in 2015, “Yours” was truly the little song that could, being released to country radio by Triple Tigers Records in April 2017. The romantic wedding song, co-written by Dickerson, Parker Welling, and Casey Brown, slowly climbed the charts, hitting #1 for two weeks in late-January and early-February.
“[“Yours”] was only the second song that the three of us ever wrote together,” Dickerson told Billboard. “It’s certainly a love song, written for my wife, Kailey. I’m not kidding: when we finished it, we knew it was special, and I said to Casey and Parker, ‘You can go to zillow.com and pick out a new house, ’cause we just wrote a No. 1 song.'”
Dickerson would go on to score his second #1 eight months later with “Blue Tacoma.”
Jordan Davis: “Singles You Up”
Written by Jordan Davis, Steven Dale Jones, and Justin Ebach, “Singles You Up” was the debut single from Davis, and the first release from his album, Home State. “It took us a little while to land on something, but at the time Justin had just gotten engaged and through congratulating him on the engagement that term, ‘single her up,’ got said,” Davis told Rolling Stone Country of the writing session. “Right when it was said, I think all three of us were like, ‘Oh man, that’s really cool.’”
Davis will be spending much of 2019 on tour with Old Dominion, Morgan Evans, and Mitchell Tenpenny as part of the Make It Sweet Tour. The tour will stop at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, CT on February 8.
Morgan Evans: “Kiss Somebody”
Released in July 2017, at the lead single from his Morgan Evans EP, “Kiss Somebody” was Morgan Evan’s first release to U.S. country radio, and his first #1. Co-written by Evans, Chris DeStefano, and Josh Osborne, the track hit #1 over a year after its initial release.
Interestingly enough, Evans told Nash Country Daily that the romantic tune was NOT inspired by his superstar wife, Kelsea Ballerini. “A lot of people asked me if I wrote [“Kiss Somebody”] about Kelsea,” said Evans. “No. The answer is absolutely no. It was inspired by a mate of mine, actually. I used to stay with him in Nashville before I moved here, and he went through this really rough breakup and he was devastated. And, I was with him through that period, and I went back to Australia. A year and a half later, I came back and he was still devastated over this situation. And, I was like, ‘Dude! You need to kiss somebody!’ And so, the lyrics kind of go, “Sometimes you’ve got to drink about somebody / Sometimes you’ve got to cry and miss somebody / Sometimes you’ve got to kiss somebody.’”
Jimmie Allen: “Best Shot”
When Jimmie Allen’s “Best Shot” became a #1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart, Allen made history by becoming the first black artist to have a debut single top the country charts. Interestingly, after losing the top spot on December 8 to Kane Brown’s “Lose It,” Allen’s song returned to the top spot December 15, making “Best Shot” the first song by any artist to reclaim the top spot after descending in over a decade.
“If someone asked me two years ago if I thought that this would be my life today—that I’d be on the red carpet at the CMAs or my song would be the No. 1 song on country radio, I would have honestly said no,” reflected Allen in a statement. “Did I think it would happen eventually? Absolutely! Just not this soon. I’m humbled and grateful— it’s such an honor to get my first No. 1 and to know that my song is connecting with people and resonating in a way that hopefully makes us all better people in the end, because that’s really what ‘Best Shot’ is all about.”
Just five days before the release of his debut album, Telling All My Secrets (December 14), on Riser House/ Columbia Nashville, Mitchell Tenpenny’s first single, “Drunk Me,” became the top song on the Mediabase/ Country Airplay chart. Co-written by Tenpenny, Jordan M. Schmidt, and Justin Wilson, the single was officially released in March, and climbed to the top position nearly nine months later.
“I recorded ‘Drunk Me’ after pitching it to other artists in town for over six months,” recalled Tenpenny in a statement. “I believed in my heart it was such a special song and that it would be a hit for someone. I never dreamt it would be the song labels first heard from me, resulting in a record deal … or that it would go on to bring us our first single, let alone a number one.” He continues, “It’s been a two-year journey with this song, yet so many believed, and so, this is one of those moments we all share together – my co-writers, our band and record label, country radio and all the fans that have streamed it over 120 million times. I can’t get over you. You’ve changed my life.”

Following a successful year of live shows and number one singles, Old Dominion is ready to begin the next era of their career with a brand new single and headlining tour, both entitled “Make It Sweet.” Co-written by all five members of the group (Brad Tursi, Matthew Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, Geoff Sprung, Whit Sellers) and Shane McAnally, this upbeat and infectious single is the perfect blend of a love story and a take on the imperative phrase “life is short.”
The guys shared how unexpectedly and effortlessly it came to be in a note via the band’s Twitter account, check out the Tweet below.
Photo via @OldDominion Twitter
The band sings in the chorus, “’Cause I’m stuck on you, you’re stuck on me / I never gotta wonder where my honey be / I ain’t saving all my sugar for a Saturday night / Seven days a week I got an appetite / Sunsets like a tangerine, let’s find a road we’ve never seen / Don’t waste another mile or a minute not kissing me / Life is short, make it sweet”
The tune precedes more music to come from the Academy of Country Music award-winning group. Along with the song’s release is a brand new music video to go along with it, displaying young couples reveling in each other’s company upon some majestic scenery which concludes in a mountainside house party with the band. Tursi, Ramsey, Rosen, Sprung, and Sellers had one more surprise in store for fans this week: a winter headlining arena tour. Kicking off on January 18, 2019, in Chicago, IL, the twenty-four date tour will run through April 27, 2019, ending in San Jose, CA. The band will be joined by special guests Jordan Davis, Mitchell Tenpenny and Morgan Evans, each at select dates. “Make It Sweet” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music.
