Cody Johnson’s Song “The Painter” Goes Number One At Country Radio

Superstar, Cody Johnson earns his second number one song at country radio with “The Painter.” Learn more here…

Warner Music Nashville Platinum recording artist, Cody Johnson truly never misses. He is finally getting the recognition he deserves from country radio. He earned his first radio single with “‘Til You Can’t” back in 2022, and now the singer has finally landed his 2nd number one. Johnson’s beautiful song, “The Painter” is officially the number one song at country radio.

Written by Benjy Davis, Kat Higgins and Ryan Larkins, “The Painter’ is an incredible song about true love. While Johnson did not have a hand in penning this song, it is evident that he related to the lyrics. “My favorite lyric in ‘The Painter’ is ‘for every wall I built, she saw a canvas,’” shared Johnson in a press release. “If there’s anything that describes my marriage with my wife, Brandi, it’s that line and that’s why we’ve been together for 15 years.”

“Gets excited about all my crazy dreams // Got every sunset that she’s ever seen memorized // Saves them and waits for a rainy day or stormy night // Sky’s brighter looking at it through her eyes // I don’t remember life before she came into the picture // Brought the beauty I was missing with her // Showed me colors I ain’t never seen // She took chances // For every wall I build, she saw a canvas // Thank God everyday for how he made her // My life was black and white, but she’s the painter”

Congrats to Johnson and his team on an incredible feat. “The Painter” is one of the most incredible songs to hit country radio, and we are excited to see what’s next for Johnson. We are sure there are more number ones to come!

Cody Johnson: ‘Leather’ – Album Review

Cody Johnson shares his new album, Leather, out now, November 3rd, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new music below.

On Leather, out now, Cody Johnson had one goal: to put out an album better than the last one. “This round of songs, I have to say, is the best round of songs I have ever recorded and I feel like that’s the way it should be,” Johnson revealed of the album, which he created alongside longtime producer Trent Willmon. “Each album should outdo the last one.”

With the release of Leather, the follow up to 2021’s Human The Double Album, Johnson has solidified his position as one of country’s most consistent and reliable superstars. Throughout the LP, which he promises will also become a double album in 2024, the former bull rider runs the gamut of emotions. There’s state pride on “That’s Texas,” despair over watching an ex move on with “Watching My Old Flame,” and the stunning prayer that is “Make Me a Mop.”

Interestingly, for the first time in his career, Johnson chose not to co-pen any of the album’s 12 tracks, instead enlisting Nashville’s best songwriters to offer up their best work to allow his vocals to shine through. The result is an album that still manages to sound pure Cody Johnson.

Leather opens with “Work Boots,” a catchy and clever twang-filled ode to a cowboy’s favorite footwear and their role in catching a special lady. “We got a little work to do // It looks like she wants to dance // I wouldn’t wanna miss our chance,” He sings. “She might be the one to change our world // But we ain’t gonna get the girl // Sittin’ on a stool // We gotta make our move // So come on, work, boots.”

The Texas native celebrates his home state on “That’s Texas,” offering a moment of levity in the form of a two steppin’, 90’s inspired fiddle and steel jaunt. Likewise, “Double Down” may be the most stylistically unique track, the crooner delivering the verses slowly and deliberately before launching into a raucous twang-infused chorus about drinking to move on. In a similar vein is “Long Live Country Music,” which pairs Johnson with Brooks & Dunn for the trio we didn’t know the world needed. Here, Johnson trades verses with the legendary duo on a track that was inspired by an off-the-cuff comment made during an awards show, when Johnson proclaimed “Long live country music.”

Another unexpected collaboration pairs Johnson with Jelly Roll, on “Whiskey Bent,” a stirring ode to facing one’s demons. Of the track, the singer revealed to Billboard that he initially hated it simply because of the cliche title and  Jelly was originally supposed to be on a different song (“Jesus Loves You”), but was stopped in his tracks by the lyrics to “Whiskey Bent.” “He just started crying and was like, ‘Bro, I ain’t never heard a song like that. If I’m gonna be on a song, can it be that one?’ Johnson shares. “I think we’ve both lived that song in our own ways. People look at me as this clean-cut, wholesome guy, but I’m no different than anybody else.”

Johnson continues to show his more vulnerable side on tracks like “Watching My Old Flame,” the piano-driven “Dirt Cheap,” and “The Painter.” While “Watching My Old Flame” is a heartbreak ballad with unique lyrics that chronicles the pain of watching an ex move on, “The Painter” is a gorgeous love song. “I think it’s the first song I’ve ever recorded where I sing it in my talking voice,” He shares. “I intentionally tried to stay out of the way of the song, so the listener could paint their own image, and have their own interpretation of it. But for me, obviously, it’s about my wife [Brandi]. Without her, my world wouldn’t be what it is. We’ve been together for 15 years, so we’ve had some real highs, had some real lows. We’ve been through a lot together. She has stuck with me through thick and thin, and I think she deserves for me to be able to say this song is for her.”

Johnson shows his heavier side on tunes like “Jesus Loves You” and “People in the Back.” While the latter is an ode to the special people who you may find in the back row of a concert or the back row of a church, “Jesus” puts a unique spin on anger and betrayal. Speaking to Billboard, he revealed, “I think this song will raise some eyebrows, but you don’t get to sing about anger very often. It’s about a guy whose home is broken into, and he basically tells the person who broke into their home that he’s lucky he wasn’t killed while trying to break in. He’s basically saying, ‘God must’ve been looking out for you, but if you try that again, it’s over for you.”

Two clear highlights of the album are its title track, “Leather” and its stunning final track, “Make Me a Mop.” Co-written by Ian Munsick, “Leather” was shared with Johnson while the pair toured together and he revealed the moment he first heard the song. “My jaw dropped,” Johnson recalls. “Everything about a cowboy has to do with leather, so lines about it taking ‘Years of work and dirt and hurt to make him,’ or ‘He’ll start out stiff and rough, but give him time and he’ll soften up/ And that just makes him twice as tough’… It is so well-written.”

Lastly, the album ends on the especially poignant “Make Me A Mop,” which is a sparse and chill-inducing prayer of vulnerability as the singer begs God to make him something more than he is. “Make me a mop to clean up the messes that I’ve made in my life.” He begins. “Lord make me a spoon, smooth on the edges, when my words want to reach for a knife.”

With the release of Leather, Cody Johnson promised an album to outdo his last one, and he’s done just that. The LP is a solid collection of tried and true country that is sure to even further launch Johnson into superstardom.

Zac Brown Band Collabs with Cody Johnson on “Wild Palomino”

Zac Brown Band collabs with Cody Johnson on new song, “Wild Palomino,” out now, July 15th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the new track below.

Zac Brown Band is shaking up their latest album by featuring other stars in the genre on songs like The Comeback and more. Last month, Blake Shelton joined the GRAMMY-winning group on “Out in the Middle,” and today, Cody Johnson provides his vocals on the western-themed track “Wild Palomino.”

Written by Brown, Benjamin Simonetti, Jonathan Singleton, and Wyatt Durrette, the two sing about a girl who was always difficult to hold on to, comparing her to the untamed horse. Even Johnson, who was a former rodeo contestant, could not reign her in. Even though she left long ago, the protagonist still longs for her love.

Brown remains the singer on the second verse, while Johnson takes the first, changing the mention of an “old Georgia pine” to an “East Texas pine.” The two start by alternating lines in the chorus to then harmonizing them, creating a beautiful, mellow sound that makes the listener really sympathize with this sad cowboy.

“You can’t put reigns on a wild palomino // And you won’t make a rolling stone stay // Long as God’s still at church and hard work still works // And that collar on my shirt’s still blue // I’ll never stop loving you”

The two artists have several shows together this summer including today at the iconic Fenway Park in Boston and CitiField in Queens, New York. For tickets, head to their website.

Last month, Zac Brown Band announced plans of a deluxe version of The Comeback due out in the fall. The album will have six new tracks including the revamped “Out in the Middle” and “Wild Palomino,” and it is safe to presume the other four will also be songs from The Comeback featuring other country stars.

Cody Johnson Reimagines “Dear Rodeo” Featuring Reba

Cody Johnson and Reba McEntire’s version of “Dear Rodeo” is available now on all streaming platforms. Take a look below as we dig deeper into the track.

Country legend, Reba McEntire joins Texas-native and rising country star, Cody Johnson for a duet of his song, “Dear Rodeo” off his latest album, Ain’t Nothing To It. This song can be interpreted literally—a former rodeo competitor who walked away from the sport a while ago, but still misses the joy and rush it brought into his life—and figuratively—the rodeo being a metaphor for a former lover. McEntire’s backs Johnson until her voice takes center stage in the song’s final verse.

Dear Rodeo / I’d like to think you miss me too / But I know you don’t / Oh, but that don’t change the past / And that don’t change the truth / I’m still in love with you / Dear Rodeo

Cody Johnson, Reba McEntire, Dear Rodeo

Reba McEntire and Cody Johnson

Johnson has been singing and playing guitar since he was twelve years old. He built up a large fanbase in Texas and had several top-ten hits on Texas radio before signing with Warner Music Nashville in 2018. McEntire is not only a popular counterpart for Johnson to drive streams and sales, she fits the role well, as she is a former rodeo competitor herself who won two buckles barrel racing. Her music career launched when Red Steagall discovered her singing the national anthem at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City.

NYCS Swag Spotlight Hayden Haddock

Hayden Haddock

Hayden Haddock, our Swag Spotlight this week doesn’t have the traditional story that most current country artists boast about, growing up singing in a church or knowing from a young age that this is what he wanted to do with his life. In fact, it wasn’t until the last 5 years or so that Haddock even had an inkling that this was something he could do for a living.  He recalls watching Eric Church open for Kenny Chesney when he was fourteen years old, and between the Cheif’s incredible stage presence, his fancy guitars and fireworks display it sparked something in the Texas native. “He was just a really good entertainer, something about watching him, I went home and told my parents I wanted to take guitar lessons,” he explains.  Growing up, he was shy and although learning to play guitar came rather easy for him, Haddock had never planned on even playing in front of anyone, let alone up on stage for fans.

Currently, he is a full-time student at Texas A&M in College Station and is studying Construction Science, however, bored one day in his dorm room he started picking on his guitar and singing and as soon as his roommate and a girl who lived next door heard him play, they loved it and after a lot of convincing, he overcame his shyness and started to play gigs and write music just a month later. “I’m really glad that it all turned out the way that it did, if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be doing all of this,” Haddock says.  That fateful day in his dorm room was just a year and a half ago and already the singer-songwriter had connected with people in the music industry in Nashville and recorded and released his debut EP, First Rodeo. He worked with Trent Willmon, who produced Cody Johnson’s last four albums and he tells us how big of an inspiration Johnson is to him professionally and personally.

“Nashville is so concentrated with people trying to make a name for themselves, so it’s hard to do it since there are so many people there,” Haddock says. “You can be the best singer in the world but it’s going to take longer to get it done, so for me, Texas is a great place to start.” Willmon gave Haddock insight on Johnson’s career path, building his fan base and honing his craft in Texas in order to have something to negotiate with when and if you want to pursue a record label in Nashville.

His debut album features songs that were written by not only Haddock but people who live in his town and found out that he was looking for music to cut for his first project. Quite the whirlwind, only 6 months had passed between sitting in his dorm room picking on a guitar to getting into the studio and writing and recording the first seven songs that the world would hear.

Finishing up his degree at Texas A&M, Haddock is taking classes during the week then Thursday night jumps in his van and plays gigs all weekend. He is already working on writing and recording his next project which he says he hopes will be out before the end of the year. Listen to First Rodeo below.

Cody Johnson Brings Texas Country to Sold Out NYC Crowd

Friday night, country music fans packed Irving Plaza in New York City for a rowdy night of traditional Texas country by none other than our Swag Session album Cody Johnson.

Jobe Fornter

The opening act singer-songwriter Jobe Fortner, who is dubbed one of the hardest working guitarists from Monroe, Georgia kicked off the night. His powerful Stapleton-esque voice rocked Irving Plaza as he sang songs influenced by his southern rock background. Fortner told the crowd, “It’s damn good to be playing some country music in New York City tonight, and it feels real damn good coming from the south y’all, thank you for that.” He energized the crowd and set the stage for Johnson, and performed his brand new song “Wherever She Is.” Fortner definitely made a ton of new fans in New York City.

Cody Johnson NYC

The much-anticipated part of the night came when former professional bull rider turned rising country superstar Cody Johnson took the stage to the sold-out Irving Plaza crowd. Johnson said, “New York, are you ready to get wild?” And that they were. Dedicated COJO nation fans sang along to favorites like, “With You I Am”, “Wild as You”, “Ride With Me”, “Dance Her Home”, “Diamond in My Pocket”, and “Noise.” You could feel the intensity and emotion behind each song, especially right after singing “Noise,” Johnson told the crowd, “I think this the most intimate part of the entire set.” “The whole time God had a plan to put me on this stage right here tonight. I don’t care if this offends you or not, I’m going to go ahead and give all the credit for me being here tonight to Jesus Christ.” Johnson then sang “Dear Rodeo” a song that depicted his life immensely. His passionate lyrics and emotional tracks create such an incredible connection and bond with his fans. But if he was not singing heartfelt songs, you bet Johnson turned Irving Plaza into a good timing honky-tonk with other hit songs like “Y’all People,” and “Honky Tonk Mood.”

Cody Johnson NYC

It was not an easy road for Johnson to get where he is today, and he explained, “As for me personally, there’s a lot of people along the way that said your music will never work outside the state of Texas, there was a lot of people that said if you sign a record deal you’re gonna have to sell your soul – well here we are proving them, wrong ladies and gentleman,” He continued, “If you’re doubting yourself about something in your life tonight, I want you to dig down deep, and I want you to think about this – I am living proof that we live in the kind of country that you can step outside your box and chase your dreams and be successful. This song is for every hater in your life and everybody that wants to hate on this country its called ‘Doubt Me Now.'”

Cody Johnson

Johnson also took time during his set to invite all of the first responders, firefighters, police offers, military and the retired act of duty to raise their hands and be acknowledged. He graciously thanked each and every one of them for sacrificing and allowing everyone in the audience the freedom to be there listening to him chase his dreams. Johnson played his collaboration of “Red Dirt Road” from Brook’s and Dunn’s Reboot album, along with cover songs by his idol Chris LeDoux, Garth Brooks, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, George Strait and more. The crowd was loving every moment and screaming for more.

As Johnson pointed to his huge Texas tattoo, he told everyone, “Thanks for making us feel at home.” New York City fans sure did welcome Johnson with open arms, especially when he ended the incredible night with his current chart-topping single “On My Way to You” and the crowd sang back every single word to the powerful ballad. Johnson left it all on stage Friday night and fans did not want the night to end. It is no surprise that he is selling out show after show on his tour and will be joining Luke Combs at future amphitheater shows.
