Michael Ray’s “Whiskey And Rain” Goes Number One On Country Charts

Michael Ray’s single “Whiskey And Rain” officially reached number one on the country charts this week, marking his fourth number one song of his career. As Ray took to social media to thank his fans and team, the artist became emotional reflecting on the journey. Check out the tear-jerking response in the video below.

Michael Ray has dethroned Dustin Lynch and MacKenzie Porter’s five-week run at number one on the country charts with their song, “Thinking ‘Bout You.” As Ray’s “Whiskey And Rain” tops the charts, the artist lands his fourth number one song.

The 90s country-inspired song was a clear hit with fans, gradually climbing up the charts since it impacted radio in October of 2020. Written by Jesse Frasure and Josh Thompson, Ray recorded the song early on during the pandemic. He has shared in interviews that the song remains one of his most favorite songs to date.

“Yeah, whiskey and rain coming down, coming down // Splash of bourbon in a glass // Yeah, pouring something on the pain, let it drown, let it drown // Try to wash away the past, oh-oh-oh // Since my blue sky, sunshine, whole life  // Hopped on that midnight train // ‘Til the bottle runs out or the clouds roll away // It’s just whiskey and rain”

It will be interesting to see if Ray’s song, “Whiskey And Rain” continues to hold down the number one spot on the country charts next week. Until then, congrats to Ray and his team on a well-deserved feat!

Who Is Conner Smith? The Story Behind His Journey to Country Music

Who is Conner Smith? The singer-songwriter joined us to chat about his journey to country music. Get to know the rising star here…

The Beginning:

It is always exciting for us when a brand new artist is a star in the making! Conner Smith, one of our easiest picks for our 2022 Artists to Watch list, fits the bill. A Nashville native, Smith’s story is one that makes it easy to root for him.

“Growing up in Nashville is such a big part of my story,” begins Smith, during our interview. “I look at my story as this amazing combination of having a desire and a drive to do something and a gift and being in the perfect environment to sculpt that. Being in Nashville gave me an advantage on every front.”

As a child, Smith was all about music and baseball. At as young as six years old, he was writing music in music city, whenever he was not playing baseball with his team. “People say Nashville is a ten year town. I started writing songs in Nashville, when I was six, and I signed my first publishing deal when I was a sixteen,” shared the singer-songwriter.

For Smith, country music was his first love. “I’ve always gravitated towards the lyric of song, so for me that was always country music,” shared Smith, adding, “My mom is a big country music fan, so we grew up with George Strait and the Judds, Montgomery Gentry, and then my big guy growing up was Kenny Chesney.” Interestingly enough, the first song Smith ever learned was “Big Star” by Chesney. Smith’s mom even surprised him with his first concert at seven years old, which was also Chesney.

The Turning Point:

Clearly, the trajectory of Smith’s life moved fast, as it was evident from a young age, that the singer was made for stardom. Despite that, it was important for Smith to graduate high school before he firmly planted his feet in country music.

Smith honed his craft as a songwriter first. “I gained respect in writing rooms and proved myself going to these writes, and in the writing community.  I was more than this young kid, who could sing,” shared the artist. “I’ve always been a lyric guy and telling stories, so it’s always been country.”

Upon graduating high school, Smith began taking meetings to secure a record deal. Ultimately signing with Big Machine Label Group in the summer of 2019, Smith’s career has catapulted since. He put out his first two songs, “Learned From It,” and “Tennessee” in July 2021, and fans have flocked to the budding star by the thousands.

A huge turning point in Smith’s blossoming career was when he put out the viral hit, “I Hate Alabama.” “We didn’t have a plan for that song to come out,” he began. “It was sent to me by my buddy who wrote it, Hunter Phelps, knowing I’m a Tennessee fan and me and my producer fell in love with it. […] We were just like we have to do something with it.” This led Smith to create a music video for it and put it out on Instagram. Moments later, the CEO of his label, Scott Borchetta, called Smith to let him know that the song would be released in eight days.

Today:

Flash forward to today, Smith’s debut EP Didn’t Go Too Far is due out this Friday, January 14th. The six-song project will feature the aforementioned songs, “I Hate Alabama” and “Learned From It,” as well as, “Take It Slow.” The EP also boasts three brand new songs.

The first song is a solo write called “College Towns,” which Smith wrote on a plane. The project also includes one of our personal favorites, the title track, “Didn’t Go Too Far.” “”Didn’t Go Too Far” is one of my favorite songs that I have written, so I just needed to get that one out, and definitely a real personal song to me,” shared Smith.

Finally, Conner Smith also included the song he often opens his shows with called “Somewhere In A Small Town.” Although it was difficult to choose the songs that would finish out this collection, Smith really tried to give fans a balanced taste of his artistry. He shared that he asked himself, “What three songs in this collection of six to build the best foundation of ‘who is Conner Smith’ and what am I going to do in the future.”

After the EP comes out, the sky is truly the limit for Smith. Fans can expect more new music throughout the year and more tour dates on the horizon!

Check back this Friday, for our full review of the upcoming EP.

Walker Hayes Drops Brand New Track “Drinking Songs”

Walker Hayes’ new track “Drinking Songs” is out now, January 7th on all streaming platforms. Learn more about the new track below.

Walker Hayes’ moment to shine is now! As longtime fans of the singer-songwriter, even naming him an Artist to Watch back in 2017, it is so exciting to see his stardom continue to rise. His mega-hit “Fancy Like,” and his rising single, “AA,” keeps fans excited for what’s to come. Today, Hayes releases the next song off his upcoming album, Country Stuff The Album, due out January 21st. His new song “Drinking Songs” is out now.

Although Hayes has a checkered past with alcohol, he jokes “who better to write a drinking song than an alcoholic?,” on his social media. The truth is this song is deep, yet fun to listen to, a combination you do not typically find in music.

“So give me that bourbon and Bocephus // I can’t help me so help me Jesus (Jesus) // She ain’t coming back like you // She gone (Back like you) // So what I need is, boys right now // Hank ain’t never gon’ let me down (Gon’ let me down) // Bring them family traditions on // Yeah I’m just keep sittin’ here sippin’ and singin’ along // Thank God for drinkin’ and drinkin’ songs”

The new song depicts how many of us feel, when we have hit rock bottom, especially after losing someone we love. Hayes is a master wordsmith. This song is just another example of how clever and unique his artistry truly is. He is sure to gain some new fans with his song!

Maren Morris Releases New Song “Circles Around This Town”

Maren Morris’ new song “Circles Around This Town” is out now, January 7th on all streaming platforms. Listen here and learn more about the new track below.

It’s been almost three years since Maren Morris released her phenomenal, award-winning sophomore record GIRL, and fans have been eagerly awaiting MM3. Since 2019, Morris has released a small handful of collaborations with Ryan Hurd, Joy Oladokun, and JP Saxe, but today’s release, “Circles Around This Town” is the official lead single off her new project.

Written with her singer-songwriter husband Ryan Hurd and the fantastic Julia Michaels, “Circles Around This Town” is an autobiographical jam about her journey as a Nashville songwriter. Usually, Morris doesn’t go into the specifics of her own experiences when writing – she uses metaphors to describe the story. In this song, however, she paints the picture with imagery so vividly personal to her it lets you get to know a new side of her.

“I swear I don’t know how I trusted // A Montero with the AC busted // A couple bad demos on a burned CD // Would take me all the way to Tennessee”, she opens the first verse with the beginning of her Nashville story. In the second verse, she subtly name-drops debut single “My Church”, and the entire song feels like a nod to her past, present, and her future.

This track was produced by GIRL powerhouse producer Greg Kurstin, and the drums and guitar lick are transportive. Additionally, the music video for “Circles Around This Town” is also out now, and the visuals completely elevate the song. She is seen in a small apartment on an old desktop computer and even drives literal circles around a parking lot.

“I drove circles around this town // Trying to write circles around this town // Trying to say something with meaning, something worth singing about”

It’s the perfect song to go driving to – Morris and Kurstin did an exceptional job matching the lyrics to the sonic components.

It’s unclear whether Morris meant for the song to match the hopefulness one tries to have when going into a new year, but the timing of its release is quite interesting. We just began a new year, and “Circles Around This Town” is all about finding meaning and being grateful for keeping an open mind. “Thank God I was an optimist”, she sings right before the first chorus – and no statement in the song rings more true than that. 2022 is already looking bright thanks to Morris.
