Walker Hayes Re-Releases 8Tracks Vol. 1 & 2 Digitally

Walker Hayes

We last caught up with Walker Hayes at his NYC album release show at American Beauty, back in October.  Now, the rising country star has decided to give back to his fans the music that made them first fall in love with his unique take on country music. Originally released almost two years ago in Summer of 2016, Hayes has re-released 16 tracks, some of which did not make his full-length album Boom.

Without a record deal, Hayes recorded these work tapes and released them on his website for free, garnering thousands of new fans. The music caught the eye of Monument Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment,  which offered him a record deal back in January of 2017.  Boom was released in October of last year as well.

“I have been so fortunate to get to do things in a unique way this time around. My team has let me take risks and create music that is authentic to me – even though it might not sound like anything else,” says Hayes in a recent press release. “Today, we’re putting out the music that got me here. I’ll never forget the way fans’ reactions made me feel when I first put these 8Tracks out. They are homemade and they are the foundation of who I am. This is my way of saying ‘thanks’ for everyone’s support. I hope old fans are excited to hear them again and I hope new fans love them just as much.”

Take a listen to Vol. 1 here and Vol. 2 here.

Hayes is now out on his own Good as Gold Tour as well as the opening act for Kelsea Ballerini’s Unapologetically tour, which hits NYC on April 5th. The full list of tour dates is listed below.

NYCS Swag Spotlight: SaraBeth

SaraBeth

Photo via SaraBeth Facebook

Garland, Texas hometown of Lee Ann Rimes and our next Swag Spotlight, SaraBeth.  “Growing up she was what every singer in town aspired to be, if she could do it you could do it too,” SaraBeth explains of Rimes in a recent chat about growing up in Garland.  As a shy kid who sang in her church choir, Sara was in elementary school when she started performing at the Garland Opry. As she grew up she explains that her biggest influences were definitely Shania Twain and The Dixie Chicks. As her tastes matured, she found a true love for traditional country music such as Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline.  Her parents listened to light rock and Christian music, so those genres also shaped her influences today.  Originally going to Baylor and pursuing entrepreneurship, SaraBeth realized after graduating that she truly loved singing and did not want to look back and wonder “what if”.  She headed to Nashville to pursue her music career and hasn’t looked back since.

Releasing music as a solo artist since 2012, but realizing that it was always a group effort, she is now switching gears and working with two others to make up the SaraBeth trio.  Glenn Mitchell and Vicky Vaughn play and lend their voices to her latest single, “Something About It”. “I’ve never been more excited about a chapter in my music career, mainly because of all of the people I am working with and the music itself,” she tells us. “I was just SaraBeth but I’ve never played my own instruments, I was singing and writing the songs but I wasn’t writing them alone, I wrote a lot with my guitar player Glenn, who is now in the trio, so I was always sort of part of a group”  Working with a new producer who has also worked with some heavy hitters like Dixie Chicks, Big and Rich, Lady Antebellum, Sara Evans, The Band Perry and Martina McBride, SaraBeth describes Paul Worley as “the most wonderful person to collaborate with”.

The SaraBeth Trio is heading to New York this week. SaraBeth is running a half marathon, something she started getting into a few years back. “I woke up in 2011 on New Years Day and said this year I am running a half marathon,” she explains.  Since then she has run four full marathons and a bunch of half marathons and is looking forward to Sunday, running with her aunt and uncle who reside in NYC. We talked about how training for running long distances and the actual race is a lot like the music industry. “It is one of those things that is a lot about persistence and it is about doing things you don’t want to do. If the weather isn’t right or in the music industry people tell you that they don’t like this song or you don’t fit this mold, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t do it, it just means you have to keep training and pushing yourself and eventually you’ll break through,” she explains.

After the marathon, the trio headed to meet up with New York Country Swag on early Tuesday (Mar. 20) for a LIVE Swag Session in the video above.  Looking ahead to the rest of the year, they are excited to get into the studio in the next few months to record some new music. They have a bunch of tour dates scheduled overseas in the fall, something SaraBeth says she can’t wait to get back there to perform. “They obviously do like to have the party scene from the country artists, but they are an amazing audience to just be quiet and listen, they soak up every word you say,” she says of the experiences she’s had there. For a full list of dates and more info check out www.sarabethmusic.com and be sure to follow along on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Kid Rock

Kid Rock Brings His “American Rock n Roll Tour” to New Jersey

Kid Rock

Friday night (Mar. 9) the tri-state area headed to New Jersey’s Prudential Center to attend Kid Rock‘s “American Rock n Roll Tour”.   His career, which now spans over twenty years, has garnered hits that make him the ultimate crossover artist.  During his set Friday night, he performed songs from those two decades including the opener, “Greatest Show on Earth” from his latest album Sweet Southern Sugar as well as “Cowboy” and “Only God Knows Why” from his 1998 smash album Devil Without a Cause. Check out our clip before for a crowd favorite, “All Summer Long”.

The high energy show featured plenty of lasers, pyrotechnics, and dancers, as Kid Rock ran from one side of the stage to the other his die-hard fans sang along to each song on the setlist. Closing out the night with his infamous “Bawitdaba” watching the rockers stamina after so many years performing was truly inspiring.

By alternating between his hip-hop roots, his rock n roll swagger and even adding in some of his country twang, Kid Rock proved he can blur the lines between genre and has found a way to do it all with a style all his own.

Keep up with all things Kid Rock on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Jimmie Allen Swag

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Jimmie Allen

Jimmie Allen Swag

Since we last caught up with this week’s Swag Spotlight and one of our Artists to Watch in 2018,  Jimmie Allen we find he has made his way across the country on a radio tour and has his very first single on country radio.  In a recent chat, he explained his appreciation for the incredible team he has surrounding and supporting him and the story behind his first radio single “Best Shot”.

During our conversation, Allen was in LA visiting the radio stations on the west coast. Although he is traveling all around the country, they really only get to see the inside of radio stations so he makes the best of it. He loves not only meeting the program directors and DJs but everyone who works there and the local listeners. “I feel like they are the heartbeat of the station…the way they have responded to me has been nothing short of amazing,” he says. He does try and see the cities he is visiting at night or on the weekends, taking it all in day by day. “I love it, it is grueling but for me, it keeps me focused on staying positive and the opposite alternative which is not traveling or doing music,” he explains.

His voice beams with pride when discussing his very first radio single and how on its very first day it was added to rotation by a whopping 58 stations, the second most added song that day. He truly understands that his incredible team and the relationships they have built over the years has helped to catapult his song to country radio and how grateful he is for their support. “Nobody has gotten where they are without someone believing in them and people around them working towards the same goal,” he humbling explains.  “It’s a great win for all of us and it continues to prove if you have something that is halfway good and you have a strong team around you that believes in it you can make some things happen.”
Speaking of the new single, “Best Shot” Allen tells us was written with his friends JP Williams and Josh London over the course of a few weeks and four or five writing sessions to get the vibe just right. Recording the song three times and still not loving how it was turning out he decided to strip it down to play the song at The Bluebird Cafe one night at a songwriter round. “It’s easy to cover a song with guitars and drums and bass and fiddle and you can kind of smother it, you don’t hear the lyrics and the production sounds like everything else that’s out,” Allen says.  After his producer heard that version he knew to focus on the vocal performance to get the result that ended up on the radio today.

As he finishes up his radio tour, Allen is gearing up to play some pretty big festivals, including Taste of Country up at Hunter Mountain, NY, and CMAFest in Nashville. He is also playing the ACM Tailgate Party in Las Vegas and heading to his very first award show right after.  Ending our conversation on a personal question, we wanted to know if he could go back in time ten years and give himself some advice what would it be.  He delicately explained, “I would tell him to keep going, trust yourself, don’t allow the noise of everyone else’s opinions of who you should be, drown out your own voice of who you know you are.”
We can’t wait to continue to support and champion Jimmie Allen as his career reaches new heights and more and more people discover what an incredible artist he is.  Be sure to be following all of his adventures on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Katie Neal

NYCS Woman of the Month: Katie Neal

In our latest series, we’re bringing you stories from women who are chasing their dreams and building a life that they love with New York Country Swag’s, “Woman of the Month.”

Each month, we will highlight a different female pursuing her passions. Introducing you to women who are taking risks, working relentlessly and turning their dreams into reality. These are empowering women who serve as role models and should be celebrated.

Katie Neal

On this very special National Women’s Day edition of our Woman of the Month, we are highlighting one of New York’s most popular names in country music radio, Katie Neal.  Growing up in a small town in Illinois, Neal recalls driving down backroads in her father’s red Ford pickup truck and always listening to country music. During college, as she pursued a degree in TV Production, she had to take a radio class to complete her major.  “I was so nervous to record my voice and then have to listen to it in front of other people, I was petrified of it,” she remembers.  After a semester of radio, she started a morning show with one of her friends that is still on the air today.  She caught the radio bug and after college worked for a local Cumulus station in Bloomington, IL.  Working three jobs in order to keep her job in radio, she realized quickly that working hard and working towards a goal wasn’t always going to be easy. When they cut her shift at the local station, Neal decided to take a chance and asked to be transferred to a bigger market.

“I think when I moved I kind of made peace with the fact that I might not get a job on air if I did this, but honestly I was flying by the seat of my pants and I felt like in my heart this is what I had to do, if I had moved somewhere else it wouldn’t have been what I wanted,” she explains.  “I love traveling, I love being out and about and I feel like NY was the place for me to be.”  Borrowing money from a friend to pay for her flight to NY, she interviewed for a sales position and shortly after packed up her Mitsubishi Eclipse with everything she owned and drove across country to start a new chapter in her life.  She laughs looking back at the moment she exited the Holland Tunnel and was right in the middle of China Town, never having driven in New York City, things were quite different from her small hometown.

Sharing a three bedroom apartment with six roommates was the reality, knowing that was the only way she could afford to live in NYC her first year here.  Starting her job at Cumulus on January 2nd of 2013, she was there just a few short weeks later when Nash FM was flipped on as a country station for the very first time.  It was the first country station in NYC in over fifteen years. “It was strange to get here and to realize that NY doesn’t have a country station so I always took an interest in Nash because it was something that was comfortable and familiar in a place where everything was so foreign,” she tells us. “I listen to all genres of music but country music feels like home to me and I feel like it’s like that for a lot of people.”

When a full-time position opened up as a Nash DJ, Neal had been working closely with the program director and filling weekend and part-time slots so after auditioning she landed the job.  She is on air weekdays from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM and entertains her audience with their favorite country music as well as anecdotes about the artists and news relevant to the tristate area.  Throughout our interview, she continually discusses how lucky is she is be working in this industry alongside men who support and champion her career every single day. “I can see where it could be very difficult as a woman. We are up against a lot in society but I think it’s a really exciting time to be a woman and not just in this industry,” she explains.

Katie Neal

Her one year anniversary as a full-time DJ just past last month and she continues to work closely to help the brand and the station meet goals and reach new heights.  She tells us how grateful she is every day to be working for the only NYC country radio station and how it feels like old friends are dropping by when the artists stop by when they are in town. Artists swing by the Nash FM studios weekly, whether they are just doing an in-studio interview to chat about their new music or playing for a select group of winning fans at the Stage 17 studio.  Radio has adapted so much with the growing popularity of social media, so each of the Stage 17 shows are now streamed live across their social media platforms.  Along with Jesse Addy, Neal hosts these artists and chats about their upcoming music and what they have going on in New York City.

“I have been so fortunate to be surrounded by people in my life who have taken an interest in me and were able to identify my strengths and guide me in the right direction,” she says humbled.  “It has taken a village to get me here but I am very grateful for them.”  While discussing her favorite part of her job she explains that she loves how she gets to be a small part of someone’s happiness during their day.  She hopes she brings some light into the world and is proud to be listening to the music she loves alongside side the listeners of Nash FM.  Follow along Katie’s adventures at Nash FM and to all of the country concerts she attends by following her on Instagram.
