Madison Kozak Releases Poignant “First Last Name”

Madison Kozak

Earlier this week, songwriter Nicolle Galyon announced that she was partnering with Big Loud Records to head a brand new, all-female record label, Songs & Daughters. Galyon is best known for writing songs for other artists but now takes on a different, almost motherly role as she will nurture each of the “Daughters” on her label. The first daughter is Madison Kozak, an artist we first highlighted back in May when our Managing Editor, Christina chose her song “Graduation Day” as her May Pick of the Month.

Today, (July 26th) Kozak released her first single as a signed artist titled “First Last Name”, a song she wrote for her dad this past Father’s Day. The poignant song dedicated to a girl’s first love, her daddy, will make you instantly become a fan of the singer-songwriter. Written with Claire Douglas and James Slater, “First Last Name” has a similar sentiment to any great father-daughter song, “My Little Girl” by Tim McGraw, “Butterfly Kisses” by Bob Carlisle and “I Loved Her First” by Heartland, however, this time, it’s the daughter singing the song.

She begins by giving details all about the man who she looks up to by singing in the chorus, “He’s the son of a salesman / short glass old fashioned / ‘How’s your car been runnin’ baby?’ /  ‘Call your mama when you get home safely’ / Sawdust and stained, my heart, my John Wayne / my first last name” and with each verse you grow up with the vocalist.

From playing guitars in the kitchen while they did dishes together, swinging on a tire swing, to walking down the aisle together at her wedding, you watch their relationship change as she grows up but one thing never waivers, their love for each other. In the final chorus, she changes the last few lines, “How are things goin’ lately, stop on by, bring the baby / people they say, I’m more like him everyday /  He can give me away but no one can take, my first last name”. We’ll be shocked if you don’t need to go grab a tissue or two after listening.

“First Last Name” is the perfect song for a father-daughter dance at a wedding, we bet you’ll hear this one this fall after the bride and groom cut their cake. With such an incredible first release, we can’t wait to see what is next from the young singer-songwriter.

Old Dominion Release New Track “Never Be Sorry”

Old Dominion Never Be Sorry

Photo Credit: Mike Spotz for NYCountry Swag

Old Dominion’s new song “Never Be Sorry” is here and wow is it a good one. Thankfully the country band did not have to make us wait long as they teased the title on Instagram last week. Similarly, to how they announced their highly anticipated new album, Old Dominion, they posted a word from the song title each day beginning with the word “Sorry.”

Written by Brad Tursi, Josh Osborne, Matthew Ramsey, Shane McAnally, and Trevor Rosen, “Never Be Sorry,” is an upbeat song that shares a message that everyone who has ever gone through a breakup needs to hear. Breakups can be messy, but just because the relationship ends doesn’t mean you have to be sorry for falling in love with that person. You’re allowed to cherish those memories the two of you made together.

“Oh but I’ll never be sorry for my hands in the pockets / Of your hoodie, called you “Sugar” just to make you smile / And I’ll never be sorry for the shoes that I bought you / In Chicago, we were walking down the Miracle Mile / Oh I, oh I / I’ll never be sorry, I’ll never be sorry / I’ll never be sorry for loving you”

“Never Be Sorry” is the fourth song released from the new album, which is due out on October 25th. It follows “Make It Sweet, which hit number one, “One Man Band,” and “Some People Do.” These four songs have truly shown us a whole new level of talent from Old Dominion, and we can’t wait to hear the entire album. We are 100% certain it won’t disappoint.

Old Dominion is currently headlining their “Make It Sweet Tour.” It stopped in our area last month, where they sold-old the Hulu Theatre at Madison Square Garden, and it was a night for the books. The tour continues through the fall in both the US and Europe. To see if they are coming to a city near you check out www.weareolddominion.com/.

“Never Be Sorry” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Lacy Cavalier Performs At Exclusive NYC Event For Rokt

Lacy Cavalier Rokt

Last night singer-songwriter Lacy Cavalier was the special musical guest at Rokt’s headquarters event for their partners. The beautiful New York City rooftop provided unbelievable views of the Empire State Building as well as refreshing drinks and snacks for the happy hour event. After everyone gathered on the steps leading down to the stage area, Cavalier was introduced and performed songs from her latest project, k i’m done.

The songstress’ soulful voice carried throughout the rooftop and engaged the young crowd as she sang songs like “Blue Suede Couch”, “Simple” and “Tea”. She also did a stunning cover of the late, great Amy Winehouse, “Valerie” which had the audience singing along.

She closed out the night with her single “Cheating On U” which she told us about in our recent Swag Session saying it was the first song that sparked the idea for her EP. Watch the full performance and interview below. After performing the track and a thunderous applause, she yelled into the microphone, “I’ve always wanted to say this: ‘Thank You, New York!’ ” After spending the day supporting the rising artist, we are certain this may have been the first but it will not be the last time she gets to say those words.

NYCS First Impression: Justin Moore ‘Late Nights and Longnecks’

Late Nights and Longnecks

Two-time platinum-selling and ACM award winner Justin Moore releases his fifth studio album, Late Nights and Longnecks available everywhere tomorrow. The Arkansas native sticks to his roots with his latest project filling our ears with raw, booze-infused, traditional country music. Moore co-wrote all of the ten tracks on Late Nights and Longnecks along with songwriters Casey Beathard, David Lee Murphy, Paul DiGiovanni, Chase McGill, and Rhett Akins. He has mastered the art of songwriting and showcases his unique craft on each track as he reflects on growing up a down-home country boy. Moore has given his loyal fans some of his best work to date.

Late Nights and Longnecks speaks to the reality of the word we live in, addressing everything from drinking through the good times and the bad, embracing fatherhood, and saluting our military. The first cut is the energetic drinking anthem “Why We Drink.” Moore explains every conceivable reason we may want to throw one back. No matter what day of the week, or what time it is, “it’s alcohol abuse if you pour one down the sink, that’s why we drink.”

“That’s My Boy” is a heartfelt track about fatherhood and it is Moore’s first time writing a song about one of his children. The sentimental ballad speaks to the type of man his son is and will become, and his poignant vocals stand out singing “that’s my heart, that’s my soul, that’s my last name, that’s a love like I’ve never known, yeah, that’s my boy.” Next up is Moore’s latest chart-topping tearjerker “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home,” an emotional tribute told with a genuine appreciation for our fallen heroes. One of the more uniquely written songs on the album “Jesus and Jack Daniels” is a story that goes down memory lane growing up with a Mother who is religious, and a Father who loves to drink. With a simple acoustic guitar strumming, Moore creates nostalgia with lyrics, “I got a little bit from both of them, a little bible, and a little buzz.”

On a more light-hearted note, he puts a creative twist on the upbeat song “Airport Bar,” proving you don’t have to be anywhere else than an airport bar to escape from reality, get over an ex, and take off. “Small Town Street Cred” is an electric’ up-tempo track with a modern take on growing up in the country. The electric guitar strum with Moore’s vocals makes for a rockin’ small town anthem melody. Moore continues the liveliness with “Never Gonna Drink Again” The party song has a catchy beat and a different take compared to many of his other songs which could be appealing to a more modern age of country music fans. Moore goes on a bender when everything seems to be going wrong singing, “Right now Jim Beam is the only thing gonna fix me, and I’m gonna drink till I swear that I’m never going to drink again.”

Slowing things down again, “On the Rocks” is a moving ballad that showcases Moore’s incredible vocals. Beginning with a simple piano, the dramatic story unfolds as he compares his failing relationship to drinking until he’s cut off because “this whiskey ain’t the only thing on the rocks.” Going back to his twangy outlaw side, “Some Day I Gotta Quit” is all about reminiscing on mistakes he’s made all the while knowing he has to eventually put a stop to it. Finishing out the record, “Good Times Don’t” is reminiscent of a nostalgic country song about all the things in life that we enjoy, and a reminder that “the world spins round, and kids get grown, but you still turn it up when Hank comes on, yeah, times change, but good times don’t.”

With his latest album Late Nights and Longnecks, Moore proves he has an unbelievable ability to connect to listeners through his artistry. He sticks to what fans know and love about his authentic music, all while pushing boundaries. There is no doubt Moore’s unique twang and infectious voice will continue to captivate traditional country fans as well as newcomers for years to come.

New York City fans will have the opportunity to meet Justin Moore on Wednesday, 7/31 at 11AM at The Shop at NBC Studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

Mitchell Tenpenny & Seaforth Team Up on “Anything She Says”

anything she says m10

Almost two years ago we introduced you to a rising talent that we believed in. Mitchell Tenpenny played for us in the middle of NYC’s Time Square as an undiscovered artist in one of our Swag Sessions. Flash forward a year later, he released his debut album, Telling All My Secrets, which garnered his first number one hit, “Drunk Me,” as well as, landed himself coveted opening gigs on tour with the likes of Old Dominion and Rascal Flatts. Today, Tenpenny continues his incredible momentum by releasing a brand new song featuring one of our Swag Spotlights, Seaforth called “Anything She Says.”

Laced with clever wordplay and a catchy chorus, “Anything She Says” is clearly an M10 song. It would fit in perfectly in the catalog of songs off the singer-songwriters debut album, while still having a more mature and elevated sound. It begins with an enticing guitar rift, much like his smash hit “Drunk Me,” which is sure to add to the recognizability of the tune. The love song is Tenpenny’s take on being smitten by a girl and wanting to give her his all, most likely inspired by his beautiful girlfriend.

Throughout the song, Tenpenny and the men of Seaforth trade verses. Tenpenny sings the first verse and chorus lamenting the sweet sentiments, “I would wreck all of my plans / Drive until we hit the sand / Catch a sunburn, while she tans / I would do, I would do / I’d do whatever she likes / Give her Christmas in July / She ain’t gotta tell me twice / I would do, I would do, anything / She says.”  Seaforth goes on to add, “She got all my attention / She knows I’m always listening, hanging off her lips / Yeah she got me like” about their own muse.

After just one listen, this song is sure to be stuck in your head and a staple in your music library!

We caught Tenpenny back in May at Hulu Theatre in Madison Square Garden, when he opened up for Old Dominion and Jordan Davis for a sold-out NYC crowd of fans. It was definitely an epic night of music! For more tour information and a chance to see Tenpenny live, head to mitchell10penny.com.

Rascal Flatts Perform “Back To Life” On Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Rascal Flatts Jimmy Kimmel Live

Big Machine Records supergroup, Rascal Flatts are showing no signs of slowing down. After headlining Taste of Country music festival back in June and bringing their ‘Summer Playlist Tour’ to PNC Banks Arts Center in New Jersey in the same week, Rascal Flatts is proving that they’re a pillar in the industry. To celebrate and promote their current Top 20 hit, “Back To Life” the men performed on the outdoor stage at Jimmy Kimmel LIVE last night for an incredible performance in Los Angeles.

Record in hand, host Jimmy Kimmel welcomed the superstar vocal group to the stage, as part of the impressive summer concert series. “Here with the song “Back To Life” Rascal Flatts,” exclaimed Kimmel as the crowd erupted into cheers and applause. The trio performed in front of a packed out group of fans with a moving sunset background to add to the ambiance of the love song. As always, the group delivered unmatched vocals and harmonies, as well as, the unique style that they have cultivated over the last decade.

We are hopeful that “Back To Life” will become Rascal Flatts 18th number one song before the year is up! Check out their epic performance of the tune below.

In an unaired encore performance, the trio had the audience dancing and singing along to their song “I Like Sound of That.” The 2016 track is one of their many number one singles. The lead singer encouraged the audience to “throw your hands up in the air!” and they obliged without hesitation. Equally as impressive, the supergroup sure know how to hit their sweet spot every time!

Rascal Flatts will continue to play shows on their Summer Playlist Tour, which is stacked with an impressive group of openers on select dates. For more information, head to rascalflatts.com.
