NYCS Woman Of The Month: Nicolle Galyon, Songwriter & President of Songs & Daughters

We’re bringing you stories from women who are chasing their dreams and building a life that they love with New York Country Swag’s, “Woman of the Month”.

Each month, we highlight a different female pursuing her passions. Introducing you to women who are taking risks, working relentlessly and turning their dreams into reality. These are empowering women who serve as role models and should be celebrated.

Nicolle Galyon

Nicolle Galyon, small-town Sterling, Kansas native started off as a bonafide country superfan, driving 6 hours with her mother to catch The Dixie Chicks in concert and joining fan clubs in order to secure that coveted artist autograph. Today, she is not only a mega-hit songwriter, producer, and president of a brand new all-female label, Songs & Daughters, but she works day in and day out to remain authentic to and impress that little girl who used her fandom to follow her dreams.

Understanding how much time and dedication goes into being a superfan for a specific artist, or for a genre, really lit a fire under Galyon to make her way to Nashville for college. Attending Belmont University, she told family and friends back home that she wanted to work at a record label or manage an artist. In addition to majoring in Music Business, she gave piano lessons to kids, something she learned from an early age, which ultimately led her to work as an assistant. Before long, Galyon found herself sitting in the middle of Nashville guitar pulls filled with songwriters and artists who had publishing and record deals.

“I always knew who Hillary Lindsey, Brett James, and Craig Wiseman were, but it wasn’t until I sat in on a guitar pull that I really understood what that job was,” Galyon explains.

Once she started writing songs, she found herself terrified to perform them in front of anyone, something you must do in order to give your words any traction. After years of writing and honing in on her craft, she realized that writing something that she thought an artist would like or emulating what she heard on the radio was keeping her creativity in a box. It was three or four years into pursuing songwriting before she truly started writing songs for her, and those songs that showcased her honesty were some of the very first songs recorded by artists.

Since then, she’s written many hit songs including “Automatic” for Miranda Lambert, “Boy” for Lee Brice and “All The Pretty Girls” for Kenny Chesney. Most notably, Galyon contributed to co-writing the chart-topping song “Tequila” for Dan + Shay, which has gone on to win not only a Grammy award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance, but also both Single and Song of the Year at the 54th Academy of Country Music Awards.

Just last week, Galyon joined Dan + Shay on tour when they played in Chicago and for the very first time got to hear “Tequila” performed live by the duo. For the incredible highlights, and to see a glimpse of that fangirl moment, click here for her Instagram Stories.

Galyon tells us about that moment saying, “I am by no means too cool to be that superfan. When being a superfan is no longer fun for me, then I probably need to find another job because why go through all of this trouble, why endure all of the failure and all of the no’s if the yes isn’t going to be truly enjoyed as if you were still 17.”

Looking back, we asked Galyon if she could go back to her first few days being a songwriter what would she tell herself and she poetically says: “To trust myself more. I think that’s exclusive for me, but there is a time to listen and learn and that never ends. Whoever I am writing with tomorrow, I will learn something from them, whether they are a veteran songwriter or they are 19-fresh-off-the-bus, if you quit learning from people you quit evolving and you take yourself out of the game because you have to change and evolve.”

We discuss how her roles are now changing as she steps into a new position as label head and president of Songs & Daughters, an all-female label in partnership with Big Loud Records. She says it’s a little like being a senior in high school again, in the best way, “I was the girl that would go play volleyball but right after the game I would grab my yearbook camera and take pictures of the football team, then I would go play saxophone in the pep band and I thrived when I had that much going on,” she laughs.

“Now that I am at this part in my career it’s very natural for me to be in a writing room, but then step out and approve a music video in a bathroom then jump back in, finish a song, then do an interview in the pick up line while I am getting my kids and to me that’s thriving, it makes me feel alive and always a little bit nervous and that makes me feel good.”

Her success as a songwriter has brought her to this next phase of her career, but one thing remains certain, she is a creative and will always be a songwriter first. Her flagship artist is Madison Kozak, a rising female singer-songwriter that we have loved for the past few months with her songs “Graduation Day” and her first single to radio, “First Last Name”.

Galyon explains that she is excited to help develop Kozak’s career, “I want to know what it feels like to stand back and really propel someone else because there is only so much of that gratification that I can get by bringing attention to my self and my own achievements. It really feels like there is a whole pool of goodness that I get to dive into when I extend it to other people.” She hopes to guide Kozak in wanting to push herself and bet on herself, always remaining true to the person and artist that she is.

Nicolle Galyon

One of the things Galyon claims has guided her through this career in the music business is her way of decision making. She has learned to ask herself what would she tell her daughter to do or ask for if she was brave enough to want something. Charlie, who is now six years old plays an active role in the music industry, attending number one parties and standing side stage taking it all in. She gets to see the glitz and glamour as well as the hard work that her mother puts in to create the life she always dreamed of.

“I feel like I always want all of the parts of my life, that I love, to feed into each other. It’s too hard to compartmentalize,” she explains. “It’s beautiful for Charlie to get to listen to new mixes in the backseat and her to tell me what her favorite song of Madison’s is. It’s really cool to be at a Madison show and Madison dancing in a corner with Charlie. I like it when the lines are blurred between personal life and work a little bit, because I can’t turn my heart on and off, that way I don’t have to, I just keep my heart on in every room I go in.”

As usual, we finish our conversation by asking what advice our Woman of the Month would give to any young people looking to pursue a career in the music industry and boy did she deliver some prolific enlightenment. “My advice is to trust yourself and trust your taste, I think that’s really what creativity is. One thing that I would tell Charlie is that, if there is something you have a little bit of an ego or an opinion about, follow that, that’s how I got here as a songwriter. I always had an opinion about what song I wanted to come out as the next single. I always had an opinion about what the cover of a record should look like, even at a very young age,” Galyon says.

“That’s what I would tell young female creatives. If there is something that you have a little bit of an ego about, don’t be ashamed of that. That might be your self’s way of telling you what you should be putting your time and effort into. Your ego, if handled responsibly, can be your compass to what you should be doing with your time and creativity.”

90s Country Songs That You Forgot Were Your Jam

Everybody loves a good 90s hit and the decade sure has many great ones to offer. Between Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee”, Shania Twain’s “Any Man Of Mine”, Brooks and Dunn’s “Brand New Man”, and many, many more, there are endless opportunities to add to your playlist. With all that the ’90s country scene has to offer, there can be a few gems that get lost. That is why we have compiled a list of ’90s hits you forgot were your total jam.

“That Ain’t My Truck” – Rhett Atkins

“That Ain’t My Truck” is a song that everybody knows and hits those heartbreak feels. The ACM Songwriter of the Year may not be making any more of his own music but he has been pinning chart-toppers including Jason Aldean’s “When She Says Baby,” Thomas Rhett’s “It Goes Like This,” Dustin Lynch’s “Small Town Boy,” Luke Bryan’s “Huntin’, Fishin’ and Lovin’ Every Day” and more. All of these hit songs still have a sense of Atkin’s original emotional appeal to them just like in the ’90s.

“Amazed” – Lonestar

Released just weeks before the ’90s were over, Lonestar’s biggest hit proved there can be a large crossover between genres. One of the few country songs to hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during that time puts it on the list.

“She’s In Love With the Boy” – Trisha Yearwood

Music videos help bring a song to life although Trisha Yearwood’s “She’s In Love With the Boy” music video knocks it out of the park. With big hair, big mustaches, innocent themes, and irresistible melodies, this song is a huge success.

“Blue Clear Sky” – George Strait

While “Check Yes or No” and “Give It Away” are added most of the time, The King of Country’s “Blue Clear Sky” is still a clear hit. In fact, it was the number one song for a month straight!

“Pickup Man” – Joe Diffie

Many artists these days credit Joe Diffie for being an influence on their style of music so it is only fitting we include one of his popular songs. The double entendre of the song title plays out as he is always winning over the women. He barely even tries, as his new ride always gets attention in traffic jams and drive-in movies on Friday nights.

“Daddy’s Money” – Ricochet

This song is perfect to play when you see the right someone at the bar, at a party, or on the lake. “She’s got her daddy’s money, her mama’s good looks / More laughs than a stack of comic books,” Ricochet sings. While Ricochet had very little success, this song will live on for many more years to come.

“I Like It, I Love It” – Tim McGraw

McGraw’s third hit single is filled with cheesy silly lyrics and a catchy melody although it perfectly describes what someone in the singer’s shoes would do. The second it comes on the radio, you can’t help but start singing to it. As a matter of fact, you probably started singing along before you even knew the words. Between the fiddle and barroom piano and McGraw’s Southern drawl, you are hooked upon first listen.

“This Kiss” – Faith Hill

“This Kiss” is a perfect encapsulation of all the joy and romantic giddiness of a newfound love. Maybe Hill was taking notes from McGraw on tour? Either way, few songs can achieve such high levels of catchiness like this song and it continues to be one of Hill’s greatest hits.

“Independence Day” – Martina McBride

“Independence Day” won a CMA Song of the Year title in 1995, and it certainly pushed McBride to the front of the pack. Her vocal talent made this ’90s singer’s first statement song a hit. Despite its success, many radio stations were uncertain whether they would play the controversial anthem. Its story of a woman’s struggle against abuse is powerful, showcasing a realistic view of how it can torment its victims. Although it only reached #12 on Billboard’s singles chart, the song reached a wide audience and received much critical acclaim.

“Fast as You” – Dwight Yoakam

“Fast as You” is one of Yoakam’s last country hits, and it’s a standout on this list. The Kentucky native’s drawl and outlaw style were mixed with a pop influence created a swaggering tune that you could recognize upon only the first few beats.

“Watermelon Crawl” – Tracy Byrd

“Watermelon Crawl” was a classic ’90s line dance favorite in any honky-tonk across the country. The song is full of great imagery that the listener can follow as it describes the adventures of a man who pulls off the road in a small town in Georgia. Everything this festival has to offer screams country; live music, seed spitting, an eating contest, and red wine made from watermelons. It’s pure, simple country music.

“Every Light In The House Is On” – Trace Adkins

Last but certainly not least, Trace Adkins’ somber ballad. The ’90s hit tells the story of a man missing an ex-lover and it is just as emotional as it is beautiful. Adkins tapped into this song and truly told of heartache in a new and unique way that was not being exposed in the songwriting world just yet.

Country Songs For Your First Dance At Your Wedding

Country music accommodates a soundtrack for all occasions. Heartbreak, falling in love for the first time, and, of course, the stereotypical feel good drinking song. Planning your wedding? We’ve got you covered with our top 11 picks for country music first dance songs.

“Only You Can Love Me This Way” – Keith Urban

Keith Urban has a number of love songs under his belt and this older, little less known down-home country classic is a perfect choice to slow things down and show the person you love that they will forever be the only one. “That you’re always in my heart // You’re always on my mind // But when it all becomes too much, you’re never far behind // And there’s no one that comes close to you, could ever take your place // ‘Cause only you can love me this way”

“Speechless” – Dan + Shay

Dan + Shay have even made a few pop-up appearances performing their famed love song live at couple’s weddings. The duo have even released an acoustic version to specifically be played at weddings: “I’m speechless // Staring at you, standing there in that dress // What it’s doing to me, ain’t a secret // ‘Cause watching you is all that I can do // And I’m speechless // You already know that you’re my weakness // After all this time I’m just as nervous // Every time you walk into the room // I’m speechless”

“Good As You”- Kane Brown

Considering Brown’s music video for his single depicts his very own wedding, this short and sweet ditty is absolute when picking a feel-good upbeat song to get the audience up and swaying during your first dance. “I just wanna wake up everyday here in this bed // Never leave ‘I love you’ left unsaid // It might take a hundred lifetimes to do // But baby, I just wanna be good as you”

“Come A Little Closer” – Dierks Bentley

One of Bentley’s most recognizable songs. It’s stripped-down, literally, romantic and slow-tempo. Everything that sums up a perfect first dance selection: “Come a little closer baby // I feel like lettin’ go // Of everything that stands between us // And the love we used to know // I want to touch you like a cleansin’ rain // And let it wash all the hurt away // So come a little closer baby // I feel like lettin’ go”

“Where You Are” – Tenille Townes

Although this may not be a popular choice yet, this acoustic, heartfelt-ballad tells truth of everywhere you would go to be with your loved one: “I’d stand in any ticket line // Any mountain I would climb // Just to find my way to where you are // I would swim across the sea // I would cut down any tree // Leave a trail through a forest in the dark // Pave a path to get back to where you are”

“Mean To Me” – Brett Eldredge

“I wanted to write a song telling someone, ‘If I could mean half as much as you mean to me, that would be amazing,'” Eldredge said about the song. If that doesn’t classify as true love, what does? “Standing here // Watching you // Turning every head in this crowded room // The lights down low // Dancin slow // Oh, if falling’s how you feel // And perfect is what you see // Then I’d be what you mean to me.”

“I Don’t Dance” – Lee Brice

Lee Brice confessing about his inability to dance just makes it that much more romantic. It’s not just about your ability to dance, but your willingness to do it anyway for the one that you love. “I don’t dance // But here I am // Spinning you ’round // And ’round in circles // It ain’t my style // But I don’t care // I’d do anything // With you anywhere // Guess you got me // In the palm of your hand // ‘Cause I don’t dance”

“God Gave Me You” – Blake Shelton

This is one of Shelton’s top love songs originally written by Dave Barnes and is great for couples who are looking for a slower-tempo. Did you know that our Managing Editor, Christina picked this one as her first dance song at her own wedding?! “God gave me you for the ups and downs // God gave me you for the days of doubt // For when I think I’ve lost my way // There are no words here left to say, it’s true // God gave me you”

“Then” – Brad Paisley

This song declaring the growth of love is enough to bring tears to anyone’s eyes: “And now you’re my whole life // Now you’re my whole world // I just can’t believe the way I feel about you, girl // Like a river meets the sea // Stronger than it’s ever been // We’ve come so far since that day // And I thought I loved you then”

“From The Ground Up” – Dan + Shay

To be honest, Dan + Shay should be the soundtrack for all weddings. This generational filled love song is the perfect foundation for a new, beginning love story: “And we’ll build this love from the ground up // For worse or for better // And I will be all you need // Beside you I’ll stand through the good and the bad // We’ll give all that we have // And we’ll build this love from the ground up”

“Butterflies” – Kacey Musgraves

Different from the last couple of piano ballads, “Butterflies” provides a uniqueness to your first dance choice. It’s like feeling that spark for the first time all over again: “Now you’re lifting me up, instead of holding me down // Stealing my heart instead of stealing my crown // Untangled all the strings round my wings that were tied // I didn’t know him and I didn’t know me // Cloud nine was always out of reach // Now I remember what it feels like to fly // You give me butterflies”

We hope that this list provides perfect insight and inspiration in choosing the right first dance song for your special day.

Hunter Hayes Surprises Fans with New Album Announcement

Hunter Hayes fans were in for a pleasant surprise this morning when the “Wanted” singer appeared on stage at 30 Rock to perform on 3rd Hour Today and announced that his newest album, Wild Blue (Part I), will be released this Friday, August 16th on digital platforms everywhere. This came as a huge and extremely exciting surprise to fans considering that the album was initially rumored to be released on October 11th.

Hayes’ most recent single “Heartbreak”, released earlier this year in February has had fans anticipating the arrival of even more new music for quite some time. This single, along with 9 other tracks including previously released “One Good Reason”, “Dear God”, and “One Shot” will make up the self-defining album for Hayes.

The decision to surprise release the album was not always the plan.“So, we initially planned to perform on Today and announce our October album release, however, because the album was finished and because the fans were asking for more new music now, we wanted them to have it as soon as it was ready… and have it all, not just five or six songs,” Hayes shared in a recent press release.

Hayes teased the release of the album on Instagram yesterday morning, encouraging fans to, “TOTALLY tune in to the @TODAYshow TOMORROW AT 9 AM local, there WILL be surprises…”. Comments on this post read, “OMG, we’re FINALLY getting an album”, and “Is this for real happening? I can’t remain calm asdjfkdlks”.

While a major theme of the album is celebrating life and who you are, Hayes ensures fans that it is not an “endless party”. The album is reflective of a difficult period of self-growth for Hayes that has led to him finding a version of himself ready to take on the future in his own terms.

When reflecting on the impact he wishes this album to have, Hayes, says he “hopes people hear the hope in its message. There is this sense of flight, feeling that freedom and kind of loving the start-over aspect of it. When you’re holding on to too many things, there’s no way you can possibly do that.”

We look forward to parts two and three of Wild Blue, and seeing the continuous finding of self and defining of who Hayes is as an artist that they will bring.

Wild Blue (Part I) will be available this Friday, August 16th, everywhere you buy or stream music.

To keep up with Hunter Hayes, follow him on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

6 Undiscovered Female Artists You Should Be Listening To

We’re loving the changing of the tides that is occurring in the country music scene. It’s been an exciting month for the ladies, as Maren Morris’ song “GIRL” went number 1 on country radio and Grammy-nominated songwriter, Nicolle Galyon unveiled her newest project, an all-female label named Songs & Daughters.

Female musicians are making sure their voices are heard in the industry and delivering songs with lyrics that aim to empower women. We’ve already shared 6 of our favorite rising female artists that we are loving, but here are 6 more undiscovered, yet extremely talented female artists that deserve the spotlight too!

1. Lacy Cavalier

Listen: “Cheating On U”

One of our newest Swag Sessions alumni, Lacy Cavalier is taking the music industry by storm! She is sassy, beautiful, and passionate, with killer vocals to match. At only 22 years old, it’s only a matter of time until everyone knows her name. She just released her newest EP, k i’m done, which is filled with heartfelt, honest, and relatable songs that will be stuck in your head in no time! Make sure to give it a listen and keep up with her via Instagram and Twitter.

2. Hailey Whitters

Listen: “Ten Year Town”

Singer-songwriter Hailey Whitters is one to look out for! She’s no stranger to the music industry, as she’s been songwriting since she was a teenager. Currently, she is holding her own on tour with prolific singer-songwriter, Lori McKenna and we caught her set just last month at City Winery. Later this year, she will open for superstar Maren Morris. Whitters is poised, honest, and primed for success. Listen to her song “10 Year Town” to get a taste of her unique talent and be sure to follow her on Instagram and Twitter.

3. Hannah Ellis

Listen: “Friends Like These”

Another artist that we are loving is Hannah Ellis. She performed at our inaugural ‘Babes, Booze & Brunch’ event back in 2018, as well as, opened for Walker Hayes at Mercury Lounge the same year. She is a clever lyricist and songstress that truly sings from her heart. Check out debut single, “ILY So What” and “Home and Hometown” which she sang for us during a live Swag Session back in 2018. Most recently, she was chosen as one of CMT’s Next Women of Country and released her brand new single, “Friends Like These.” Keep up with her endeavors via Instagram and Twitter!

4. Renee Blair

Listen: “Girlfriend”

Our next artist signed a publishing deal with SMACK in 2017 and has been a powerhouse ever since. She’s opened up for many great performers in the industry, including Mitchell Tenpenny, Willie Nelson, and Michael Ray; however, she is a stunning performer in her own right. She premiered her newest song “Girlfriend,” earlier this month, which explores the inner workings of her heart as she wishes for a man, who is unfortunately in a relationship. Both a Swag Spotlight and Swag Sessions alum, we know how spectacular Blair is and can’t wait for more people to recognize her talent. Stay in the loop via her Instagram and Twitter.

5. Lauren Duski

Listen: “The Weather (Grandpa’s Song)”

Lauren Duski got her start on NBC’s The Voice, but she is proving her staying power with her independently released debut EP entitled Midwestern Girl. She plays with the gamut of emotions on the heartfelt record, especially on songs, “The Weather (Grandpa’s Song)” and fan-favorite “Costume Party.” She earned her spot on this list because of her beautiful songs and unique song-writing. Learn more about Duski in our Swag Spotlight with her, as well as, by following her on Instagram and Twitter.

6. Kelleigh Bannen

Listen: “Happy Birthday”

Rounding out our list is seasoned singer-songwriter, Kelleigh Bannen. The Nashville native is a vocally-gifted storyteller. She delivers epic lyrics in her songs, “Happy Birthday,” “Deluxe,” and her newest track, “Faith In You.” Bannen is an artist, who is equally as impressive on emotionally-heavy songs, as well as, sassy uptempo tracks. We featured her in a Swag Spotlight back in 2018, and we can’t wait to see where her career continues to take her. Be sure to follow her on Instagram and Twitter.

We hope you add these talented ladies to your music collection!

Country Stars Who Have Stood The Test of Time

In today’s society, there are so many trends that come and go, some lasting a week and others months. We see the same in the music industry with certain beats and styles coming and going on the radio. While we see change, some artists have stayed constant and continue to put out great music for fans for decades. Below are some of our favorite artists that are still making waves in the industry decades later and have stood the test of time.

George Strait
Strait is not called the “King of Country” for nothing. With 60 #1 hits, the most in history, ACM Artist of the Decade, and a Country Music Hall of Fame member, no one is taking Strait’s place anytime soon. From early hits like “Fool Hearted Memory” and “Amarillo By Morning” to more recent ones including “Give It Away” and “It Comes Natural”, the country icon proves that classic country music is still cherished. While Strait is not on the road touring anymore, he does play select weekends at the T-Mobile Arena for his residency and a few other events. There may not be many more opportunities to see the legend himself sing 20+ number one hits a night, so make sure you get a piece of the action while you still can!

Reba
Reba may have started as a rodeo girl, following in the footsteps of her father, but now she is one of country music’s biggest icons. McEntire is the only country female solo act to have a No. 1 hit in four straight decades: the 1980s, ’90s, ’00s and ’10s, and it is easy to see why. Hits like “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia”, “Fancy”, “Consider Me Gone” and collaborations including “The Heart Won’t Lie” with Vince Gill and “If You See Him/If You See Her” with Brooks and Dunn, put her on the top of the charts. When Reba was an up and coming artist, her tenacity and talent helped her blaze a path for females in country music. The Oklahoma native is still a very relevant part of the industry with her new album Stronger Than The Truth and her Las Vegas residency with Brooks and Dunn.

Artists That Have Stood the Test Of Time

Garth Brooks
While Strait has the most #1 songs in history, “The Thunder Rolls” singer has the most awards. Brooks has 2 Grammys, 17 American Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, 18 Academy of Country Music Awards, 24 Billboard Music Awards, and 26 number 1 hits, just to name a few. While he is known as a tried and true country artist, his ability to integrate pop and rock elements into his music leaves people converting to country after each listen. Brooks is still selling out 50,000+ stadiums every month on his stadium tour and new music like “All Night Long” and “Dive Bar.” Bringing unbelievable energy to each show, Brooks’ legacy is growing bigger and better each year and shows no signs of stopping.

Brooks & Dunn
After sitting down for burritos one night, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn decided to take a chance at becoming a duo after their record label had been mentioning it for weeks. That may have been the best decision they ever made for their careers. Building a large fan base across the world, 25+ ACM Awards, 2 Grammys, 17 CMA Awards and more, the guys made a very long successful run. Years later, the duo is one of the best selling duo’s country music has seen. While they split up after their greatest hits album to do their own ventures, their brand new REBOOT album with upcoming artists including Luke Combs, Midland, and Kasey Musgraves, Brooks and Dunn have put themselves at the forefront of the music scene once again. Their old hits are getting more airplay on the radio, new collaborations are landing them TV appearances, and the Vegas residency with Reba keep the “Neon Moon” singers booked all year.

Alan Jackson
Making Chattachooche a household song isn’t the only thing Alan Jackson is known for. His career was built around traditional country music, driven by twangy riffs and a honky-tonk vibes. Upon coming to Nashville, Jackson wrote all his own songs and made heads turn left and right with his ability to tell a story through music. With upbeat songs like “Gone Country,” “Living On Love,” and “Don’t Rock The Jukebox,” he has a somber side that you can see in certain songs. One of the biggest songs that got people’s attention was “Where Were You,” his song commemorating the 9/11 terror attacks, one he won a Grammy for. With 30 years of music, touring, awards, and a loyal fanbase, Jackson is still going strong playing shows across the country. While he has stopped putting out music in recent years, you can still find his classic sound in the gospel album he made for his mom, Angels and Alcohol.

Kenny Chesney
There are a lot of artists in the industry that go to school for something other than music but find themselves pursuing their hobbies anyways, Kenny Chesney is no different. He went from majoring in advertising to graduating and heading to Nashville to play the local honky-tonks. Fast forward a few years later and a new record deal and Chesney is cranking out hits such as “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy” and “In My Wildest Dreams.” Rolling into the 2000s was filled with sold-out shows across the country and #1 records, most of which landed on Billboard’s Top 100, making Chesney one of the most successful crossover country artists. Chesney is the king of stadium tours, selling out arenas all over the country in the last 5+ years and fans new and old are coming to watch the 4-time Entertainer of the Year. Setlists include “Summertime,” “Living In Fast Forward,” “Young,” and new hits “American Kids,” and his latest “Tip Of My Tongue.” Being out on the road takes up most of Chesney’s time nowadays although he still finds time to create powerful songs like “Get Along” that calls on all of us to love one another. We caught Chesney last summer at MetLife Stadium when he sold-out the epic venue.

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill
One of country music’s power couples has not retreated to a normal lifestyle just yet. Making over $100 million on their Soul2Soul tour alone, the couple is still making music. McGraw has put out a few singles in the last year(“Neon Church” and “Thought About You”). Together the duo released a touching and emotional album The Rest of Our Life in sync with their tour. Hill does not tour anymore although McGraw has been playing quite a few festivals like Stagecoach and Cheyenne Frontier Days. Both have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and together in downtown Nashville as a part of Nashville’s Music City Walk of Fame. Both singer-songwriters have made such a huge contribution to country music, Hill paving the way for female artists and McGraw tearing up the charts proving that if a small-town boy from Louisiana can make it, you can too, with grit and determination. They have served the Music City community with their beautiful voices, kind spirits, and southern charm for decades, making them some of the most lovable people not only in Nashville but across the world as well.

Josh Kerr Releases His Debut Single “Still Our Town”

Josh Kerr Still our Town

Last Friday, Josh Kerr released his debut single “Still Our Town.” If his name sounds familiar, it’s because it should! Kerr has worked as a producer and songwriter in Nashville for the past several years. He has produced songs and music videos for many artists, such as Dylan Scott, Abby Anderson, Keith Urban, and Kelsea Ballerini. Now, he is making his debut as a singer-songwriter on his newest song, “Still Our Town,” and boy it’s a good one.

Kerr’s debut single is contemporary and current. He relies on cleverly strung together lyrics and smooth vocals to tell the story effortlessly. The song’s message is relatable, as Kerr sings about feeling like his own town, no longer feels like his after a break-up. Everything reminds him of his ex, which tends to happen to most people after a breakup. Although a melancholy theme, the newcomer delivers a mid-tempo sound, which is refreshing for a song about this subject.

“I still smell the magnolia / Feel you lean over / Head on my shoulder / See the sunrise / Hear the sound of the dirt flying off the tires / And I still look for that old taste of corona / Kiss on that sofa / See your blue eyes/ Wherever I go / I’m still running into you / Even though I Know that /You’re not here, you’re still around / And I tell myself / that it’s mine now / But it’s still our town / It’s still our town”

The New York native is definitely one to look out for. We’re excited to see how all his experience working with other successful artists will culminate in his own songs and projects. According to his social media, “Still Our Town’ is the first of approximately 12 songs off his upcoming record. Kerr shared “Nashville I decided to release my first song I produced it and sang it and played on it alongside my favorite musicians. It’s been the most amazing, overwhelming, l inspiring, stress, fun process, and the record is almost done.”

To keep up with Kerr, follow him on Instagram and Twitter.

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Jon Wood

We spoke to our next Swag Spotlight, Jon Wood just after he released his debut EP which was produced and co-written with Justin Weaver, a major songwriter in Nashville with songs like Brantley Gilbert’s “Bottoms Up”, Jason Aldean’s “Even If I Wanted To” and the Meghan Trainor/John Legend smash pop hit, “Like I’m Gonna Lose You”. Wood who was born in a small town just 20 minutes north of Nashville experienced his father working in the music industry as a songwriter and an artist. Eventually, they moved to North Carolina where Wood tells us his father gave up one dream to follow another. “He had four boys and anything that would take him to the next level would end up taking him away from his family so he realized he wanted to be a dad more than anything so he put that on to the side and raised us and taught us how to write songs and sing,” he explains.

Growing up he recalls his family formed a band with a bluegrass sound and they recorded all of the music in the studio their father built in their house. Wood was only 12 years old and loved playing festivals and pursuing a music career with his family by his side. He knew from an early age that with the support of his parents, he was going to continue to be determined to make it in the music world.  Instilling the love for classic country like George Jones, Merle Haggard, and George Strait, Wood eventually made his way to Nashville wearing a cowboy hat and hoping to carve his own path. “I’ve been here since May of last year, I moved when I was 21 after a 15-minute conversation with my parents and honestly, the rest of my story is still being written.

Oddly enough, Wood now lives a mere five minutes from where his parents lived back in the 1990s and he passes their old apartment building all of the time. “It’s so crazy, I’m sort of living what they wanted to live,” he says. “My dad was the first one who told me to move to Nashville to truly chase that dream.” After Weaver found Wood by seeing one of the videos he posted on Instagram, they struck up a great friendship and started working together. “I get to write with him and sit in the studio and hang out for hours and just write and make music and it’s hard to find people that you can just truly sit down with and create with,” he says of their effortless relationship. Weaver is a co-writer and producer on all four of the songs on his From Where I’m From EP. Each track has a traditional vibe and Wood explains that it is so refreshing to see artists like Midland, Jon Pardi, and Luke Combs experiencing such success.

“When I got to town I looked at Dustin Lynch who’s music isn’t the most traditional but he did have that cowboy hat so I figured I could do something in that lane but with Midland and Jon Pardi, it shows that people are getting sort of tired of hearing the same thing on the radio, not that it’s bad music but sometimes you aren’t sure if you clicked country radio or pop radio,” he explains. “We want to find the sound that Kenny Chesney tapped into in the early 2000s, it was traditional but he could sell out a stadium with it and keep the energy going.”

His next EP is slated for release in the fall and he looks forward to working hands on the project and hopefully getting out to play some shows around the south.
