Lauren Jenkins Puts Her Own Spin on Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” & “Stolen Car”

Lauren Jenkins, the Texas native, Carolina raised country singer + songwriter, propelled her one-of-a-kind conventional take on Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart” and “Stolen Car” off of The River album. Earlier this week, The Bobby Bones Class of 2019 member had her renditions in rotation on Sirius XM’s E Street Radio, Volume Channel’s Kick Out The Jams with Dave Marsh and E Street’s Radio Live From E Street Nation.

Billboard’s Artist to Watch shared on Instagram, “Covering @Springteen can be intimidating. No one can do Bruce like Bruce can. So instead of trying to copy Bruce, I brought my own truth to these two songs. I chose not to change any of the lyrics, but instead brought a woman’s voice to a man’s story. To me, that approach brings a different layer to the song and a different perspective. I think the stripped down recordings show just how powerful these two songs are… even when they’re bare-boned. Enjoy.”

“I’m a sucker for a storyteller,” Jenkins explains of her choice to do the covers in a press release. “Tell me a story about your joy, pain, love or loss, and I’m in. That’s part of the reason why I have such a deep appreciation for Bruce Springsteen. He has a way of telling a story that feels like it’s your story, too. Honesty and vulnerability seem to be at the core, and that’s something I try to mirror in my own music. I don’t do covers often, but when I do, it better be a damn good song. ‘Stolen Car’ and ‘Hungry Heart’ have been part of the soundtrack to my life, and I’m so excited to share my take on them. If you haven’t heard their creator singing these songs, do yourself a favor and go listen to Springsteen now.”

Kelsea Ballerini Speaks Out About Lack of Women Played on Country Radio

Song Suffragettes, an all-girls songwriting circle and group has been asking country radio the same thing for years: “Let The Girls Play”. It doesn’t seem like a hard request; women have always added flavor to country music, and radio should reflect the talent coming out of the genre. But it’s been a struggle.

A part of the second-ever Song Suffragettes show back in 2014 was country superstar Kelsea Ballerini. She sat alongside four other girls on stage, singing her then-unknown debut title track “The First Time”: a girl and a guitar with something to say.

Five years later, however, little has changed. On Monday, Chris Willman tweeted that he heard an LA radio station play a Gabby Barrett song followed by a Ballerini song with no interruption. “Can’t they get fined for that?” He said as a joke, clearly excited but shocked that two female artists were played one right after another. Michigan radio station 98 KCQ tweeted Willman back in response. “We cannot play two females back to back. Not even Lady Antebellum or Little Big Town against other female. I applaud their courage.”

 

The tweet reached Ballerini, and she was appalled. “I’m really sorry that in 2020, after YEARS of conversation of equal play, there are still some companies that make their stations play by these rules. It’s unfair and it’s incredibly disappointing.” There were thousands of responses to her post, ranging from artists and songwriters to radio stations and fans.

Artists like Kacey Musgraves, Karen Fairchild, and Lindsay Ell, just to name a few, commented on Ballerini’s post in support and tried to make light of the situation. Musgraves also tweeted, “Smells like white male bullshit and why LONG ago I decided they cannot stop me.” Despite selling out Bridgestone Arena and venues all over the world, Musgraves has yet to have had a #1 as an artist.

There’s a glimmer of hope, though. Jennifer Nettles, whose vocals are as powerful as her tone, told Ballerini, “I know exactly how we do it. And I will call you.” Karen Fairchild commented, “Unbelievable. CHANGE is coming!!!!!!”

 

 

But perhaps the most powerful post of all was from CMT’s Leslie Fram, one of our Women of the Month, who has been creating opportunities for female artists left and right her entire career. “I am committed to change”, her post read simply. And that sentence right there is enough to keep artists creating the art they are creating, and hopefully, snowball into radio finally deciding that it’s time to change the conversation.

Carly Pearce Releases Uptempo “Heart’s Going Out of Its Mind”

In continued anticipation of the February 14th release of her self-titled sophomore album, Carly Pearce has released the new track, “Heart’s Going Out of Its Mind.” Written by Pearce, Joe Ginsberg, and Laura Veltz, the song is all about those special kinds of flutters that come with a new love.

The song starts with a twangy banjo, before segueing into a full-out pop-country banger that is sure to be a highlight of the album. On the catchy up-tempo, Pearce puts a fun spin on those feelings that come at the start of a new relationship. While she knows its uncharacteristic of herself, she loves the fact that her heart is going a bit crazy.

“You make my heart go thump, thump, thump/ Like nothing else / Who am I? / What the hell?/ I don’t recognize myself,” She sings. “Boy, whatever you’re selling/ I’m buying it/ I’m losing it a little but I’m liking it/ There’s something in the air tonight/ My heart’s going out of its mind/ Boy whatever you’re doing, keep doing it/ My lipstick baby you can ruin it/ If I look a little crazy, that’s fine/ My heart’s going out of its mind.”

“Heart’s Going Out of Its Mind” is one of many releases from Pearce’s forthcoming album, which also includes “Closer To You,” “Call Me,” “It Won’t Always Be Like This,” and her duet with Lee Brice, “I Hope You’re Happy Now.” The album will also feature a collaboration with her husband, Michael Ray, that was co-written by Kelsea Ballerini and Thomas Rhett, along with Jesse Frasure and Ashley Gorley,

NYCS First Impression Dustin Lynch ‘Tullahoma’

Dustin Lynch Tullahoma

Platinum-selling, singer-songwriter, Dustin Lynch released his fourth studio album, Tullahoma, today (Jan 17). Named after his hometown in Tennessee, the record contains eleven tracks, including the three off his Ridin’ Roads EP and his 2018 number one single “Good Girl.” Lynch co-wrote six of the songs, the most he has ever contributed to one of his albums. Old Dominion frontman, Matt Ramsey, Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley, the late busbee, and many more talented songwriters also contributed to this record.

“Tullahoma is the town that made me the man I am,” Lynch writes in the album biography. “So, as a songwriter now, I can’t help but go back and jump in my boots as a kid or a teenager in high school and write from that frame of mind.”

Being that this project is a homage to his hometown, it’s ironic that he’d sing about burning it to the ground in the first track, “Momma’s House.” Released on December 6th, Lynch sings about how an ex-girlfriend ruined the town he grew up in and how he’d “burn this whole town down if it wasn’t for my momma’s house.” Throughout the song, he recalls memories and specific spots in the town that now haunt him because of this breakup. Already getting radio airplay, we can expect this to be Lynch’s next single.

In the next track, “Dirt Road,” he paints a more positive picture of his hometown and growing up. He starts out by comparing it to Nashville, as the buildings are taller, the lights are brighter and the town is always buzzing. He admits he doesn’t always fit into that kind of life. “Yeah I’m just out here chasing these stars / Sometimes I swear I’m living on Mars / but I grew up on a dirt road.”

Lauren Alaina is becoming the go-to female singer to feature on male country artists’ songs nowadays. Alaina, already recording songs with Kane Brown, Rascal Flatts, Chris Young, Jon Pardi, and HARDY, joins Lynch on this third track, “Thinking Bout You.” She plays the role of an ex-girlfriend (probably not the same one in “Mommas House”) that calls him up one day. Coincidently, he’s been thinking about her a lot lately.

“Ridin’ Roads,” Lynch’s current single, hit number one the first week of the New Year, making it his seventh chart-topper. Co-written with songwriting geniuses Ashley Gorley and Zach Crowell, the song had a slow and steady climb to the top, as it was originally released back in March of 2019. Lynch presents his cool, laid back attitude in this track as he takes a ride with his girl down a windy back road in the country.

“Old Country Song” begins with a hip-hop beat, but as it progresses, the traditional country sound comes into play with instruments like the banjo and fiddle. He shows off his knowledge of old-school country with references to legends, such as George Jones and Johnny Cash. This is definitely the most traditional-sounding track on the album. “Ima love you like George Jones loved to drink, like Johnny loved some June.”

Lynch has some fun with word-play in songs like “Country Star” and “Workin’ On You.” In “Country Stars,” Lynch leaves the bar with a girl to go stargazing. “I’ll get you falling like a country star” he sings, cleverly relating to both the stars is the sky and the way fans fall for artists. “Workin’ On You” has a more upbeat, rock-n-roll sound as the lyrics depict a day that was spent working in the field, and once that work is done, the singer spends time with his girl.

The record closes with three previously released songs in “Little Town Living,” “Red Dirt, Blue Eyes” and “Good Girl.” “Little Town Living” is reminiscent of Jason Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem” as Lynch raps the verses.

“There wasn’t an intention to write an album inspired by my hometown,” he says of Tullahoma, “but there was an idea to aim at the character of who that small town boy is, and to write an album that that guy would like, that he would want to play in his truck and try to impress his girl with. Every single song had to check all those boxes or we just tossed it out. It was a very small bull’s-eye, but it was fun.”

Lynch will hit the road to headline his Stay Country Tour with special guest Travis Denning starting in Detroit on January 30th. NYCS First Impression: Little Big Town ‘Nightfall’

Nightfall Little Big Town

For the better part of two decades, Little Big Town has been country music’s reigning super-group. Combining four distinctly powerful voices into one ethereal harmony has long been their piece de resistance. Nowhere is this more evident than on their ninth studio album, Nightfall, out today (Jan. 17).

The thirteen-track collection is an epic series that explores the highs and lows of life in a unique way. Self-produced by the foursome, along with Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian (Golden Hour), each song stands on its own as a musical masterpiece, but together, they make up what just might be Little Big Town’s best and most cohesive album yet. “This was a journey, and still is. Whether you’re going to the mountains, or the beach, even sitting in your living room with a glass of wine, this record is an experience,” Kimberly Schlapman reveals in a statement. “It will take you through so many places in life, hopefully sink in, and take you where you need to go, or give you what you’re looking to find.”

What’s most apparent on Nightfall is that the group shines as individual singers, each of them taking a chance at lead. However, the sum of their parts is even more powerful, their vocals soaring in a way that’s so uniquely Little Big Town. On this album, the lyrics and the vocals shine, complemented by the instrumentation rather than distracted by it. “It’s so easy to keep layering guitars on top of each other,” Jimi Westbrook says in a statement. “Every sound is intentional on this record. We’d empty tracks out to create more space. Those spaces let the energy come through. The space allows you to absorb what we’re saying.” This is evidenced on the dreamy “River of Stars,” with its twinkling instrumentation, as well as on “Wine, Beer, Whiskey,” which features pulsating horns and drums in a way that is sure to soar in a live setting.

“Problem Child” is another musically magnificent moment of the album, featuring Westbrook’s voice soaring over a simple piano melody that then transcends into a full orchestral piece as the song builds. “Are you the black sheep?/ Have you been lonely?/ Out on the outside/ You’re not the only one,” he sings, his voice vulnerable and emotive. “What’s your problem, child?” Written by all four members of LBT with Sean McConnell and Tofer Brown, this is one of the album’s many standouts, tackling a seemingly taboo subject. Yet, they manage to do it in a way that’s beautiful, but still important.

The quartet also offers different takes on love lost on Nightfall, from the buoyant “Over Drinking” to the Pleasantville-esque situation of “Sugar Coat” to the what-could’ve been longing of “Questions” and lastly, the achingly beautiful “Trouble With Forever.” On “Questions, which she co-wrote with Jon Green and Sarah Haze, Fairchild finds herself wondering about the one that got away as she speaks those questions that she longs to ask. “I’ve got questions/ With no intention/ Of ever saying ’em out loud,” She wonders mournfully. “Did you give her/ My old key/ Am I anywhere in your memory?/ I can’t sleep/ It’s keeping me up tonight/ I’ve got questions.”

“Trouble With Forever,” written by Jason Saenz, Marc Beeson, and Haze, closes out Nightfall on an exquisitely bittersweet note. “We love how forever begins/ But the trouble with forever/ Is it always ends,” they harmonize. We won’t ruin the ending for you here, but make sure you have tissues on standby.

Of the project, Philip Sweet offers. “If people can open their hearts and just connect with music in a way that feeds them, makes them feel what they need or want to, then we got it.”

Sweet is absolutely right; they’ve got it. Nightfall is truly a majestic offering that transcends genre, making you feel and believe every word the quartet sings.

Maren Morris The Only Country Act at the 2020 Governors Ball Music Festival

Maren Morris Governors Ball

As artists continue to push the envelope and venture into the cross over world, Maren Morris has found a ton of success in the pop genre since her collaboration with Zedd and Grey, “The Middle”. Announced today, Morris will join the lineup for the 2020 Governors Ball Music Festival in New York City which features over 65 artists.

Her latest project, GIRL while of course, has all of the country storytelling, leans in the fluidity of not being boxed into one genre. “The Bones” has been played on pop stations across the country and her spot at this year’s festival will attract even more fans that love good music, no matter the genre.

Many genres will be well-represented at this year’s Governors Ball at Randall’s Island Park on June 5th-7th, as the headliners are Tame Impala, Missy Elliott, Vampire Weekend, and Flume. Stevie Nicks and Miley Cyrus are also on the bill.

Luke Bryan, Morgan Wallen & More On The Proud To Be Right Here Tour

Just announced, this summer’s tour line up is getting even hotter as Luke Bryan brings the Proud To Be Right Here Tour nationwide. Joining him on select dates is Morgan Wallen as direct support with Runaway June and Caylee Hammack. Bryan went live on Facebook to announce the summer and fall tour which kicks off on May 28th and will continue through October 10th.

The tour will stop at the most famous arena in the world, Madison Square Garden on August 4th. Watch the full Facebook live below. Bryan also teased that there are several special surprises in store for the tour including unannounced dates and other opening acts.

After the big announcement, Bryan played his current single “What She Wants Tonight” and teased a snippet of a new song “Born Here, Live Here, Die Here”. “The second I heard this next song, I knew it was something that I was going to record. It just feels like certainly growing up in my hometown. It feels like just the perfect song to kind of describe the small town, hometown life,” Bryan described of the unreleased track.
