NYCS Swag Spotlight: John King

John King

In a little mountain town in Northeast Georgia, there isn’t much to do so when our next Swag Spotlight discovered his love for music, it instantly became the most important thing to him. His father was a huge music lover, he recalls spending Saturday afternoons with vinyl records, listening to everything from AC/DC and Led Zeppelin to Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Don Williams. “There were a lot of cool influences coming into my life from an early age, I grew up loving songwriters and country music and the music and melodies from pop and rock so I do think that fed into what I do now and what my sound is,” he tells us.

He tells us about the exact moment where he started singing, all thanks to his mom who said she was “tired of listening to banging drums and instrumentals, that someone had to sing”. After those garage bands turned into touring bands around Georgia, and after finishing his degree at The University of Georgia, he went straight to Nashville, a place he’s called home for six years.

King has found success in Nashville not only as an artist but also as a songwriter, writing Randy Houser’s number one song “We Went” with Matt Rogers and Justin Wilson. “To me, being a songwriter is just as big of a part of it, I love entertaining, I love performing but I really can’t see myself doing any of that without the songwriting aspect, it’s therapeutic for me” he explains.

His latest release, one he says is his favorite song he’s ever put out, “Try Saying Goodbye” has hit a chord with fans and King is proud of that. The concept is something he relates to on a daily basis, thinking about his wife and their relationship. “we’ve been dating for 15 and married for 5 years now, so almost half of our lives,” he tells us. “When you are with somebody that long, you go through changes, you get into an argument or debate and when you step back, the fight isn’t usually aren’t as big of a deal as you make it out in the heat of the moment and the hardest thing to do is say sorry and move on and nothing to me is worth losing the person I love in my life.” The track has garnered over 3 million streams on Spotify and is connecting with fans in a special way.

Recently, King partnered with Straight Talk Wireless to interact with his followers and fans in a more intimate way, giving them a dedicated line where they can reach out and chat with the singer-songwriter. “I couldn’t think of a better way to be one on one with fans, there are have been so many amazing stories and it makes me emotional. That is the dream as a songwriter and an artist, to see it impacting people that way, it doesn’t get any better than that.” For more information on Straight Talk Wireless, head to StraightTalk.com and to get in contact with King, you can text 706-949-3181 to let him know your story about “Try Saying Goodbye”. “Country music is such a fan-centric genre, our fans are just amazing, if they invest as you as an artist, they are there for a lifetime,” he says.

This summer King is hitting the road, touring the country and is excited to not only be playing at CMAFest but also the Grand Ole Opry on June 28th. To keep up with John King be sure to follow him on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter and for all of his tour dates head to https://www.johnkingcountry.com/

NYCS First Impression: Matt Stell ‘Everywhere But On’ EP

Matt Stell Everywhere But On

Country newcomer Matt Stell is one to look out for this year. We have had the chance to host a Swag Session with the rising artist, spotlight his talent in an exclusive interview, and be in the audience as he performed at Hackensack Meridian Health Stage 17 for the first time. Now, we are excited that the singer-songwriter has officially released his new EP, under Sony Music Nashville/Arista Nashville, titled Everywhere But On.

The new record is a compilation of seven songs, all co-written by Stell. One of the tracks is of course, the singer’s lead single, “Prayed for You.” The coveted love song is currently climbing the charts, and we suspect that it will be Stell’s first top ten song, sometime in the near future. Co-written with Allison Veltz and Ash Bowers, Stell pours his heart out on the lyrics, singing a love letter to the girl of his dreams, whom he dreamt about and prayed for before he found her. Stell played this song for us, during our live Swag Session back in September.

On the contrary, just before the release of his EP, Stell premiered the heartbreaking title track. The singer-songwriter shows off his knack for creating catchy hooks and choruses and tugging at the listener’s heartstrings. “Everywhere But On” is Stell’s take on dealing with heartbreak, and struggling to move on, exclaiming “I’ve moved everywhere, but on.” The intriguing wordplay mixed with the entertainer’s raspy undertones is the perfect combination for this break-up song.

In the same vein, Stell sings about turning to alcohol to move on from a break-up. In “Better I Drink” the singer-songwriter shows off his outlaw side, delivering a song with heavier instrumentals and deeper vocals. The track is a stark difference from the previous songs he has released, but it gives the EP more versatility, which only adds to Stell’s talent. “Gonna drown my heart in a whiskey rain / The more I feel the better I drink.”

Stell sings about alcohol again in “I Bet Whiskey Would.” This time, using the liquor as a way to get comfortable with a new girl in a bar. The song is smooth, enticing, and sexy, even though its seemingly at first about alcohol. Once again, relatable, the lyrics mixed with Stell’s impressive vocals will keep this song stuck in your head.

Continuing with a more hard-hitting sound, Stell sings about not being able to break free of the love spell some girl has him under in the first track, a mid-tempo song. “Last Habit” is the singer’s realization that he’s addicted to a girl’s love and that he just can’t/doesn’t want to help it. “Yeah, the stars are just made for me wishing that dark was just made for your kisses / And all I wanna do is keep on holding you, keep on holding you / You’re my last habit.”

One of the stand-out tracks off the EP is “Home In a Hometown,” featuring fellow rising country artists, and one of our 2018 Artists to Watch, Jimmie Allen. The duo take turns, trading verses, paying homage to their perspective hometowns. Plenty of artists share their appreciation for the people and places that raised them, but Stell does so through honest and raw lyrics that stand out amongst the crowd. You’ll truly feel the nostalgia while listening to this track. “Put the back in the road / When we pull off the highway / The score on the board / On a November Friday / The hey how you been when you ain’t been around. The home in the hometown.”

Arguably the best track off the EP, Stell closes out his record with “The Reason Why.” Co-penned by the singer with songwriters, Paul Sikes and Matt Alderman, the mid-tempo love song has the ‘it’ factor. Throughout his EP, Stell has pure love songs and break-up songs, but “The Reason Why” is the perfect middle ground. It is his honest interpretation of wanting to give up on love but finding that one person that makes you want to give it another try. His cleverly crafted lyrics paired with the intriguing instrumentals will have you both crying, smiling, and singing along, which is everything you want in an uplifting anthem. “Love is a gamble, it’s a game / But those dice ain’t been rollin’ my way / It’s a song we’ve all heard / But I don’t seem to know the words / I swore I had given up on it / But you walked in and made me want it / You’re the reason why.”

Overall, Stell’s EP Everywhere But On is a solid representation of his artistry that will make you want to root for his success. We can’t wait to see where his career takes him next and will continue to champion him on as he carves his own path in the country music industry.

If you’re in the tristate area later today, head to Neptune City, New Jersey for a free Summer kickoff event, where Stell will be performing. Additionally, the singer-songwriter will be a staple at many country music festivals this summer, including CMA Fest, Carolina Country Music Fest, and Country LakeShake Festival. For tickets and more information, head to mattstell.com.

To keep up with Stell, follow him on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Kelsea Ballerini Joins Thomas Rhett on “Center Point Road”

Kelsea Ballerini Thomas Rhett

Photo From CMA Press

For Thomas Rhett, “Center Point Road” (released today, May 24) is a celebration of small town life. As the title track of his forthcoming album, due out May 31, the song features Kelsea Ballerini and is a nostalgic look at growing up in a Southern small town.

Written by Rhett, Jesse Frasure, Amy Wadge, and Cleve Wilson, “Center Point Road” features Rhett and Ballerini trading verses over a lush, anthemic track. Musically, it leans towards the anthemic pop-rock of the likes of the Chainsmokers or Imagine Dragons, while lyrically it’s a tried and true country tune in the vein of Kenny Chesney’s “Boys of Fall.”

The lyrics celebrate first loves, Friday night football games, and everything that makes growing up great. On the chorus, Rhett and Ballerini sing, “We wrote our own destiny/ In parking lots and empty streets/ We got high on you and me/ Jumped over cracks beneath our feet/ We thought it would never end/ Then watched it go like summer wind / When growing up was just a dream / And Friday night was everything.”

Rhett grew up in Hendersonville, Tennessee, while Ballerini was raised in nearby Knoxville, and that rings true on the lyrics here. “For me, Center Point Road really symbolizes what it was like to grow up in Hendersonville,” said Rhett in a statement. “First dates, first football games, first heartbreak, first kisses, success, and failures. I really feel like that road shaped who I am today, and it felt fitting because the record, for the most part, is pretty nostalgic. Songs like ‘Almost,’ ‘That Old Truck’ and especially ‘Center Point Road,’ really describe who I was as a kid and teenager, and who I’ve become as an adult.”

Center Point Road, the album, is due out next week, and in addition to this collaboration with Ballerini, it also features songs with Jon Pardi (“Beer Can’t Fix”) and Little Big Town (“Don’t Threaten Me With a Good Time”).

Thomas Rhett will host a special Center Point Road Experience album release event on Saturday, June 8 during CMA Fest. He’ll also hit Madison Square Garden as a part of the Very Hot Summer Tour 2019 on Friday, September 20, with Dustin Lynch, Russell Dickerson, and Rhett Akins.

To keep up with Thomas Rhett, follow him on InstagramTwitter, and Facebook.

“Center Point Road” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.

Home Free Releases New Single & Video for “Dive Bar Saints”

Home Free

Talented vocals-only country group, Home Free, comprised of five vocalists have big plans for the second half of the year. Mostly known for releasing a cappella covers of songs, the group has recently announced their plans for their new project. Their fifth studio album, Dive Bar Saints is in the works, complete with ten original songs and two covers of classic country tracks, slated to drop this July. For right now, Home Free gives us a peek into their album, releasing the title track accompanied by an alluring music video.

Just like the song’s title, the music video paints a picture of a dive bar being Home Free’s own type of church, inviting anyone to come join them. The video is fun and relatable as clips of each group member having a different role in the bar, including singing karaoke, bartending, playing pool are showcased; however, the message of the song is still pure and inviting.

“It’s a place to heal and place to hurt / After a long week of hell it’s like Sunday church / You’ll hear dirty jokes and the gospel truth / The jukebox choir singing in the corner booth / We’re here every weekend bring your burdens, bring your pain / everybody’s welcome a the church of the dive bar saints / Yeah the dive bar saints.”

Their killer vocals and ability to use their voices to act as instruments is on full display in the imagery. The uniqueness that Home Free possesses is one of the reasons we spotlighted the vocalists back in 2018 and why we’re excited for the release of their next record. Read our interview with the group here.

The men of Home Free are gearing up to head out on their ‘Dive Bar Saints World Tour’ this fall, kicking off in Fresno California on September 18th. The tour hits the New York area on November 10th at Town Hall, but first, the group will be performing at CMA Fest this June. For tickets and more information, head to homefreemusic.com.

To keep up with Home Free, follow them on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

12 Country Songs You Will Recognize The Instant They Come On

With music at our fingertips these days, most of us have 1000’s of songs in our music library, and tons of playlists downloaded, but it’s those songs we recognize the moment they begin that we have on replay over and over again.  Because of that, we decided to compile a list of some of the catchiest country songs that you know from the second the music starts.

Rules of Breaking Up”- Brandon Ratcliff

This song gave us the idea for the list because of its clever and enticing guitar solo that starts the track. “Rules of Breaking Up” is Ratcliff’s debut single that is currently climbing the charts. It’s a song that after a few listens, you will be hooked and recognize it instantly!

“Whiskey Glasses”- Morgan Wallen

Wallen’s second consecutive number 1 single, “Whiskey Glasses” is a jam. His wordplay sets the mood for the track right away, as he sings “Poor me, pour me another drink.” The beginning lyric instantly makes you want to stop what you’re doing, and sing along to the song at the top of your lungs.

“Drunk Me”- Mitchell Tenpenny

Tenpenny’s number 1 debut single, “Drunk Me” is one of the catchiest songs released last year. The opening instrumentals will catch your attention right away, and have you gearing up to sing the first verse, “Some people don’t know when to quit…”

“Before He Cheats”- Carrie Underwood

Superstar Carrie Underwood has an impressive catalog of hit songs, but it’s her single, “Before He Cheats” off her debut album Some Hearts that makes our list. The killer instrumentals, featuring guitars and banjos, stops you in your tracks and as you get ready to sing the revengeful lyrics.

“Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”- Shania Twain

Shania Twain, another powerful woman in the industry, delivers the next song on our list with, “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” Even before the iconic “Let’s go girls” lyric, you know the song is about to start, when you hear the opening music. The hard-hitting instrumentals are just as recognizable as the memorable lyrics.

“Friends in Low Places”- Garth Brooks

Another ‘90s jam, “Friends in Low Places” by megastar Garth Brooks is arguably one of the biggest country songs of all time. All country fans know when this song begins, as the soft piano introduction is iconic. Of course, Brooks’ voice is just as mesmerizing and recognizable. This is definitely the ultimate sing-along song at parties, bars, and live shows.

“Need You Now”- Lady Antebellum

The simple piano arrangement and voiceover that starts the Lady Antebellum hit, “Need You Now” is why this song makes the list. Their number 1 song is a heartbreaking ballad that Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley pour their hearts into through the vocals. As soon as the song starts, you will instantly recognize the painfully beautiful lyrics that are about to begin.

“This Is How We Roll”- Florida Georgia Line (feat. Luke Bryan)

Florida Georgia Line’s debut album, Here’s to the Good Times is filled with hit songs, but its “This Is How We Roll” featuring, Luke Bryan that makes the cut. The song is a windows down, blasting through your car speakers type of song from the moment the instrumentals begin. Right away, you will gear up to scream the catchy lyrics alongside the FGL boys.

“Ladies in the ‘90s’- Lauren Alaina

Songstress Lauren Alaina recently released an uptempo song entitled “Ladies in the ‘90s.” The track will catch your attention, as the introductory instrumentals mixed with the looped “na na na na na” will get you hooked instantly. Of course, Alaina’s catchy first verse adds to the recognizability of the track. “I was born in ’94 / Daddy drove a beat-up Ford / Mama made it run on love and music.”

“It Goes Like This”- Thomas Rhett

The slow and poignant beat drop at the beginning of Thomas Rhett’s song, “It Goes Like This” is why we included it in this list. The beginning instrumental packs a punch, and gets you ready to sing your heart out to the opening verse. The track is a popular one that’s often played on Broadway in Nashville, adding to the catchiness of the tune.

“What Hurts The Most”- Rascal Flatts

Rascal Flatts powerful song, “What Hurts the Most” is next up on our list. This song spans generations, as it was initially recorded by country artist, Mark Wills. The musical arrangement at the beginning of the Rascal Flatts version will captivate you right away, as it relates almost effortlessly to the lyrics.

“Tequila”- Dan + Shay

Rounding out our list is super-duo Dan + Shay’s groundbreaking single, “Tequila.” The track catapulted the duo to mainstream stardom and earned them many accolades. More importantly, the song will get stuck in your head, after just one listen. The combination of the musical arrangement and Shay’s opening vocals makes it one of the catchiest and most recognizable songs in country music right now.

Lady Antebellum’s Haunting Visuals for “What If I Never Get Over You”

What If I Never Get Over You

Just last week power trio, Lady Antebellum released their new single, “What If I Never Get Over You.” The new track is reminiscent of their 2011 hit, “Need You Now,” with emphasis on the powerful vocals and heartbreaking vulnerability that only Lady A can deliver. To elevate the lyrical message, they premiered a music video to go along with the single.

Directed by Sarah McColgan, the video portrays the broken relationship that both Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott sing about, as Dave Haywood adds the necessary melancholy instrumentation. Kelley and Scott trade verses, as images of memories of a broken relationship and the break-up, flash before our eyes. The trio and the actors portray the hurt and the anguish that is all too familiar when you’re missing the person you were once in a relationship with.

As Lady A shared via their Twitter, the song showcases “so many universal truths […] and really takes [them] back to [their] beginning as a band.” Both the song and the visuals are relatable for anyone who has tried to put their lives back together after suffering a heartbreak. Lady Antebellum effortlessly illustrate these emotions that run through past lovers minds in the enticing, but haunting new video.

Lady Antebellum will continue playing shows across the United States throughout the summer. The supergroup continues their Las Vegas residency, ‘Our Kind of Vegas’ at the Pearl Concert Theater with dates set for May and August. For tickets and more information, head to ladyantebellum.com.

“What If I Never Get Over You” is now available everywhere you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our ‘New Country Music’ playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.
