Ingrid Andress Continues To Impress With Latest Track “Both”

Ingrid Andress Both

Atlantic Records/Warner Music Nashville recording artist, Ingrid Andress has one of the most interesting and refreshing voices in the music industry right now. The singer-songwriter recently released two songs, including “More Hearts Than Mine” and “Lady Like.” The latter, which she sang on her late night TV debut last month. Now, Andress is back with another enticing song simply entitled “Both.”

Written by the songstress with talented songwriters, Derrick Southerland and Jordan Schmidt, “Both” is both a love song and a break-up song. The track depicts the story of not knowing where you stand in a relationship and dealing with those mixed signals. Her artistry shines through as her vocals present as cool and calm while delivering a serious message and ultimatum. The innovative juxtaposition is refreshing and showcases her artistry perfectly. Andress’ unique ability to deliver an airy song that still packs a punch is what makes you want to root for her success.

“You’re blurring the lines / You’re playing two sides / Just make up your mind / You can tell me to stay / You can push me away / Have space or get close / But you can’t do both / You can kiss me goodnight / Or kiss me goodbye / Baby love me or don’t / But you can’t do / You can’t do both.”

As she continues to make a name for herself in an industry that’s male-dominated, we look forward to seeing what she does next. In June, Andress will be performing at the coveted CMA Fest In Nashville. In addition, the songstress will be singing at the Ascend Amphitheater, kicking off Saturday night, June 8th, at the Warner Music Nashville showcase with fellow label-mates, Hunter Hayes, Cody Johnson, Tucker Beathard, and Ashley McBryde. The concert benefits music education initiatives across the United States through the CMA Foundation. For tickets and more information, head to ingridandress.com.

Thomas Rhett and Jon Pardi Duet on “Beer Can’t Fix”

Beer Can't Fix

On paper, Thomas Rhett and Jon Pardi seem to be an odd duo. Thomas Rhett is skinny jeans, Converse, and “new” country music, while Jon Pardi is a cowboy hat, Wranglers, and more traditional “old” country. Yet, on “Beer Can’t Fix,” released today (May 17), they make a perfect pair.

The track is an uptempo ode to beer, which just may be the universal love language of country music. According to the song, written by Rhett, Julian Bunetta, Zach Skelton, and Ryan Tedder, there’s absolutely nothing that “a beer can’t fix.” The song is perfect for Rhett’s live show, and it’s easy to imagine throngs of fans with their beers lifted in the air, passionately singing along. Plus, the “Ain’t nothin’ that a beer can’t fix” T-shirts practically design themselves here.

Pardi and Rhett trade verses on “Beer Can’t Fix,” declaring a cold one the simplest solution to all of life’s problems. Whether you’re stressed from work, rain on a vacation, or a lost love, beer is always there to save the day. On the chorus, they celebrate beer, singing, “Ain’t nothing that a beer can’t fix/ Ain’t no pain it can’t wash away / From the moment that it hits your lips / Makes those clouds look a little less gray / Oh, you could be lonely / Or heartbroken / Or hungover from the night before / Turn that frown into a smile real quick /There ain’t nothing that a beer can’t fix.”

“Beer Can’t Fix,” was released today in advance of Rhett’s Center Point Road, due out May 31. It marks the fifth track to be released from the album, following “Remember You Young,” “That Old Truck,” “Look What God Gave Her,” and “Don’t Threaten Me With a Good Time,” featuring Little Big Town.

Rhett will hit New York City’s Madison Square Garden as a part of his Very Hot Summer Tour 2019 on Friday, September 20, with supporting acts Dustin Lynch, Russell Dickerson, and Rhett Akins. Tickets are available here.

Maren Morris Opens Up In Her YouTube Artist Spotlight Stories

Maren Morris Youtube Spotlight

Released last week, country star Maren Morris was featured on YouTube Music’s Artist Spotlight. The fifteen-minute video tells the journey of Morris’ rise to fame and country stardom. Directed by Malia James, the mini-documentary combines home movies, massive crowd shots singing back songs to her and intimate moments with the artist and her husband Ryan Hurd.

Ever since she was a child, Morris loved to sing. Her parents drove her all over Texas so she could showcase her voice. She performed at honky tonks, rock clubs and even tried out for numerous talent shows such as American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent, Nashville Star and more but didn’t make it in any of them. She came close to quitting multiple times but it was country legend, Dolly Parton that kept her motivated.

“I wanted to be a songwriter like Dolly Parton,” Morris confesses. “I mirror a lot of my choices off of what’s she’s done. I think about how she’s just handled everything with such grit and grace in a world full of men. I can identify with that.”

At one point in her pursuit to be a songwriter in Nashville she had $150 left in her checking account, “It was like fight or flight,” she explained. It was the owner of her publishing company who told her she was more than a songwriter; she was an artist. “It took a long time for that to sink in because I didn’t want to pursue that again,” Morris admits.

Morris’ gateway song was “My Church”, a song in which the inspiration came from driving around town with the radio on. To her, that felt like church; her church. “What’s your version of spirituality? When do you feel most okay? My version of that is in my car when I feel very alone and whatever song comes on is the perfect song,” Morris explains. “That was the first time as a songwriter I’ve ever been territorial about a song I had written.”

However, the label didn’t love it as much as Morris and her team did; they passed on her twice so Morris’ team decided to release the song independently. The music video surpassed a million views in the first week.  “I wasn’t there at the early days for Sheryl Crow or Adele, but it felt like what those people had to feel like when they first heard those artists,” Morris’ producer/friend, Busbee described. “It was in the presence of greatness. She was going to be massive.”

Demi Lovato, Camila Cabello, Anne-Marie, Carly Rae Jepsen, Bebe Rexha, Charli XCX, Elle King and many others recorded demos for Zedd’s hit song “The Middle” before Morris was selected for the final version. The track went on to win Song of the Year at the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards.
“She gave it this gritty texture; she really felt what she was singing,” Zedd said about Morris. “And that’s the most important thing. When a singer sings something, I want to be able to believe that and not just feel like somebody’s reading a script.”

“’The Middle’ was such a cataclysm of a musical moment last year,” Morris praises. “It was kind of like the shot heard around the world…It was really amazing to be a part of a song like that.”  Morris was in a good place; she was fulfilling her lifelong dreams of becoming a successful artist, gaining confidence and using her platform to express her feelings and opinions on social matters.

Her new album, GIRL showed how brave she really was with tracks like “Girl”, “Common” and “The Bones” that emphasize self-love and remaining calm in stressful situations. “Good art is scary and it’s risk-taking and it changes culture,” she says.  With this album, Morris wants to empower not just women, but everyone who is going through a hard time in life by reminding them to stay strong and keep their head held high; everyone goes through rough patches becomes stronger because of them.

“My career, it’s my name, it’s my personality, it’s my music, but I feel so much more responsible for others now than I ever have,” Morris explains to YouTube. “It’s not just about me anymore…and I’m just hoping that whatever I’m doing right now is cool enough to inspire another nine-year-old to be like ‘I’m going to be like Maren Morris one day.”

GIRL is available everywhere you buy or stream music. Fans can catch Morris on September 6th performing at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

To keep up with Morris, follow her on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Top 5 Rising Artists You Can’t Miss at Taste of Country Festival

New York’s Taste of Country Festival at Hunter Mountain is one of our favorite events of the year! NYCountry Swag will be setting up shop at the festival for the third year in a row. We can’t wait to see you all at our booth!

As always, the festival is armed with some heavy hitters, including superstar Keith Urban and the iconic Brooks & Dunn; however, it’s the impressive list of up and coming country artists that we are most excited for.

Take a look below at five rising artists that you can’t miss!

1. Morgan Wallen
The Big Loud Records recording artist was recently added to the TOC lineup, but his Sunday afternoon set is one you won’t want to miss! Wallen recently headlined a sold-out tour, achieved his first number one single with “Up Down,” and his newest single, “Whiskey Glasses” just hit the number one spot. Back in 2017, before his massive success and before the infamous mullet, we had the chance to interview the singer-songwriter. During that conversation, our Managing Editor, Christina predicted that “Up, Down” would go number one, and sure enough she was right!

2. Runaway June
The ladies of Runaway June are another act to look out for at Taste of Country! Their self-titled debut EP landed them a spot on the road as a supporting act for Carrie Underwood on her ‘Cry Pretty Tour 360.’ Last summer, we caught up with the sassy and talented trio just before its release, where we previewed their song “Wild Wild West” and their hit, “Buy My Own Drinks” in one of our Swag Sessions. Make sure to catch their set on Friday afternoon- it’s sure to be a good time!

3. Tyler Rich
On Saturday afternoon, you don’t want to miss Tyler Rich’s set! Last year in May, we had a chance to chat with the singer about plans for more music, his radio single, “The Difference,” and his first time on the TODAY show. Flash forward a year later, he has toured with Brett Young, released more music, most recently “Leave Her Wild,” and of course, garnered fans across the country.

4. Adam Doleac
Possibly the least known on our list of rising country artists that are a must see at the Taste of Country Festival, Adam Doleac is someone to add to your list! Opening up the performances on Sunday afternoon, the singer-songwriter has been one of our favorites since 2017, when he released his self-titled debut EP. During his first time in New York City, we hosted a Swag Session with Doleac, where he sang a few songs, including “Whiskey’s Fine.” Currently, the singer has a killer hit, “Famous,” that he is sure to sing as part of his must-see set at the festival!

5. Walker Hayes
Rounding out our list of rising artists you can’t miss at Taste of Country Festival is one of our favorites, Walker Hayes! Armed with a fun personality and catchy songs, Hayes is an artist who delivers on stage. The singer-songwriter will most likely sing hits, “You Broke Up With Me” and “90’s Country;” the former he sang for New York Country Swag, during a Swag Session, before a show in NYC. Make sure to head to his set on Friday Night!

What We’re Listening To: May Picks

NYCountry Swag’s “What We’re Listening To” playlist highlights the wide range of our team’s favorite songs and artists when it comes to the country music genre.  At the end of the day, we are all fans first with a passion for country music and are eager to share with you all what we’ve got on repeat each month.

Find below each of our team member’s favorite songs and why in our May picks. Then be sure to give our Spotify account a follow and listen to our favorite tracks!

MAY PICKS:

Stephanie Wagner, Founder

Pick: “Tell Me How” – Teddy Robb
Songwriters: Aaron Eshuis, Blake Chaffin, Teddy Robb

“This month I easily chose Teddy Robb’s “Tell Me How” as the track I’ve got on repeat. I first heard the song nearly six months ago when one of our writers covering his Nashville show sent me a video clip of the song. I immediately was hooked on the lyrics.

“Tell me you’re okay / Tell me you made it through / Tell me you’re over me / You don’t think about me and you / Tell me you can sleep at night / Tell me your happy now / Tell me you’ve moved on / Then tell me how”

The first time I heard that ending on the chorus, “Then tell me how”, it blew me away. Keep in mind, I didn’t know the name of the song at the time I was sent the clip and totally did not see that coming! It’s definitely one of those songs that tugs at the heartstrings. I’m pumped that it has finally been released and the world can hear more of this talented rising star, Teddy Robb!”

Christina Bosch, Managing Editor

Pick: “Graduation Day” – Madison Kozak
Songwriters: Chris Stapleton, Jesse Frasure

“Who knew that two dudes could write a song that is so relatable for females, however, I guess songwriting geniuses Chris Stapleton and Jesse Frasure can write about pretty much anything. Madison Kozak is a newcomer to the genre but the second I heard this song, I knew I would have it on repeat for a long time. A senior at Belmont University in Nashville, Kozak dropped this song on her graduation day about being done with a loser.

“Boy, you wrote the book on heartbreak school /  had a Ph.D. in making me your fool  / now you’re callin’ me crying /  I wanted to say ‘Congratulations, boy, it’s graduation day’.”

If the killer lyrics and beat don’t make you fall in love with the song, the ‘shoop sha doops’ certainly will.”

Dylan Bestler, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Rival” – LANCO
Songwriters: Brandon Lancaster, Tripp Howell

“I liked this song the first time I heard it On The Horizon on Sirius XM but I fell in love with it when the band released the music video. The video brought the song to life and helped me understand what it was really about.

Being an athlete my whole life, I was always one for appreciating underdog stories and songs. The video displays a group of individuals bashing through a wall with negative phrases written on it to show that anyone could overcome hate, discouragement, and doubt. At the start of my junior year, I was taken off the 4×400 meter relay team; the head coach thought his new recruits were faster than I was. Being taken off the relay was the motivation I needed to push myself harder. By the end of the season, I had the second fastest 400 time on the team and was the lead-off leg on the relay that set the school record. I recently added “Rival” to my workout playlist and I suggest y’all do the same.”

Nicole Bochinis, Contributing Writer

Pick: “That Old Truck” – Thomas Rhett
Songwriters: Julian Bunetta, Kamron Kimbro, Ryan Tedder, Thomas Rhett

“I have been a fan of Thomas Rhett since the beginning. From It Goes Like This to Tangled Up to Life Changes and now to Center Point Road, I am so proud to call myself a fan and supporter of such a talented artist. Rhett has really changed the style of music that he has been putting out throughout the years but after hearing “That Old Truck,” his roots are showing more and more for his forthcoming album. As the month is coming to an end, my excitement for Center Point Road is growing especially because I get to attend a special album release event during CMA Fest.”

Jeremy Chua, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Her World or Mine” – Michael Ray
Songwriters: Brett Beavers, Travis Denning, Jamie Paulin

“A story that some, if not many of us, have resonated with at some point, “Her World Or Mine” is Michael Ray’s 3rd single following the No. 1 “One That Got Away,” off his sophomore record, Amos. I remember going through something similar just about when clips of Ray performing this song live went online. I heard it and thought to myself, “this is my story man.” It narrates the story of what goes on after a breakup, and how completely opposite both parties feel.

“One of us moved on, one of us got stuck / One of us is drinkin’ just for fun, one of us drinkin’ to get drunk / One of us sleeps good, and one of us hates to face the night / Just depends if you’re talkin’ about her world or mine”

Following the success it’s seen on Spotify and Sirius XM’s The Highway, I sure am glad the label and his team are moving forward with this ballad as the next radio single. It is a bold move to choose it over an uptempo, but this song, one of the sophomore album highlights if you ask me, certainly showcases the vulnerable, more emotional side of Ray both as a performer and individual. If anything it should, and I hope it does, get him his 4th career #1.

Kelly Cunningham, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Backseat Driver” – Robert Counts
Songwriters: Matt Willis, Nicolette Hayford, Robert Counts

This track was cut by William Michael Morgan back in 2016, but Counts’ own version is tough to beat. I just heard this track on The Highway Sirius XM and it caught my attention right away. Counts’ voice is a perfect mixture of country-soulful that gets you attached. It’s about leaving home and moving onto something new but never forgetting where you came from. It has a freedom feeling. It’s definitely a perfect summer road trip song.
“Drive like the devil / When you see an open highway / And let off that pedal / When a good view steals your breath away / Take a left if it feels right / Roll your windows down at night / You may get lost but you’ll be alright / There’s a bible on the dash / And a map tucked in the door / I can’t be your backseat driver anymore”
He was just recently signed by Sony Music Nashville in January and only released two songs. I can’t wait for what’s to come for Counts.

Julia Grubbs, Contributing Writer

Pick: “No Saint” – Lauren Jenkins
Songwriters: Ingrid Andress, Lauren Jenkins

“Ever since I heard this song when Lauren Jenksins opened for The Wild Feathers, I’ve been listening to it nonstop. The gravelly texture of the opening line catches your ear, and the strong lyrics pull you in. She tells the story of needing to forgive someone who wronged her, and the Bible tells her to, but she just can’t do it yet. You can tell she’s wringing herself, not knowing what else to do.

“I fell from grace, I can’t be saved, it’s a long way up from here / I fell from grace, I ain’t no saint, it’s a long way up from here”

With a somber tone and a little bit of resentment still present, this problem was never resolved. The other person walked away as if by saying sorry, they were free of all guilt. She knows it’s not that simple, and can’t get out of this dark place. Her vocals come from a genuine place that everyone listening along can feel the pain and most likely relate. This is a great song to sing along to and to pull at the heartstrings.”

Molly Holmberg, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Some People Do” – Old Dominion
Songwriters: Jesse Frasure, Matthew Ramsey, Shane McAnally, Thomas Rhett

“Well, the band has outdone themselves yet again, putting out yet another hit song “Some People Do.” I am always a sucker for a slow ballad but this one really struck a chord. “Most wouldn’t forgive what I put you through, but I’m here tonight hoping some people do.” It sings about a situation very similar to one my best friend was in a couple of months ago with her boyfriend, so naturally, I felt this song deep down.

I believe the vulnerability of the lyrics and the simplicity of the instrumentals really speak to the volume of this track. The whole band has amazing talent as songwriters and if their past is any foreshadowing of the future, don’t be surprised when you see “Some People Do” on the top of the charts. This was definitely an easy pick for this month and I cannot wait to see what the guys do with this song.”

Abby Kaye-Phillips, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Drinking Alone” – Carrie Underwood
Songwriters: Brett James, Carrie Underwood, David Garcia

“One of the reasons I was most excited for Carrie Underwood’s new album, “Cry Pretty” last fall was because she always includes at least one track that is out of the box. This time it was “Drinking Alone”, and I’m obsessed!! It’s rare that a country track crosses into the bluesy, sultry, jazzy territory, but this one does it in the best way. It tells a story, it pulls you in, and it sounds nothing like anything else she’s ever done. It’s definitely the song I’m most looking forward to seeing later this year on the Cry Pretty Tour 360.”
Pick: “Beer Never Broke My Heart” – Luke Combs
Songwriters: Jonathan Singleton, Randy Montana and Luke Combs

Tricia Murdy, Contributing Writer

Pick: “The Ones That Didn’t Make It Back Home – Justin Moore
Songwriters: Justin Moore, Paul DiGiovanni, Chase McGill, Jeremy Stover

“This is the latest single from Justin Moore and one that resonates so strongly with anyone who has lost someone. The first few times I heard it I had to turn it off because I couldn’t handle the emotions it was invoking in me.

Several years ago I lost a good friend – he was killed in Afghanistan while fighting in the US Army Special Forces just 2 months after his 30th birthday. He was a locally known and respected hero and was loved by everyone that knew him.

The whole town shut down, the whole town showed up, sang Amazing Grace and watched a slideshow of his 22 years. There was laughs and there was tears. And that preacher talked about sacrifice and traffic stopped for them Cadillac lights.”

Those lyrics took me back to the day his body was brought home and a parade was held through town. People lined the streets waving American flags and showing their respect and admiration for one that didn’t make it back home. This song is a ballad, a tribute and pays homage to those heroes near and far that paid the ultimate sacrifice. If you haven’t heard it yet, you must check it out. But maybe grab a tissue first.”

Nicole Piering, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Wallflowers & Weeds” – Blake Shelton
Songwriters: Ivy Walker, Jason Gantt, Scott Stepakoff, Sophie Walker

After seeing tons of previews for the animated film, Ugly Dolls, I decided to check out the movie’s star-studded soundtrack. With the voices of Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas, Janelle Monae, and Blake Shelton featured in the flick, I had high hopes for the music and was not disappointed. While there’s the expected powerful pop from Clarkson and Jonas, there’s a hidden country gem on the soundtrack by Shelton.

Entitled “Wallflowers and Weeds,” the track is dedicated to embracing what makes you just a little weird, as “wallflowers and weeds are beautiful, too.” On the song, Shelton admits that “sometimes the hardest work is loving what you’re working with.” Although the song is from a children’s movie, the theme of embracing your imperfections is truly universal and carries through to the songs on the soundtrack.

Although Shelton has been getting praised for his recent single, the dark and brooding “God’s Country,” “Wallflowers and Weeds” is a much lighter tune that you’re sure to be singing along with after one listen. After all, “Roses are red/ Violets are blue/ Nothing out there as rare as you / Throwing caution to the wind/ Like a dandelion wish blowing wild and free/ Roses are red/ Violets are blue/ Wallflowers and weeds are beautiful, too.”

Olivia Reese, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Good Vibes” – Chris Janson
Songwriters: Ashley Gorley, Chris Janson, Zach Crowell

Summer is right around the corner and “Good Vibes” by Chris Janson is the quintessential feel-good summer song. Lyrically it focuses on living life to the fullest, enjoying the moment, and appreciating what you have; to see the bright side in everything and not let anything bad or roadblock get in your way. “I ain’t tryna hear the negative (nope) / I’m just tryna change the narrative / Hell, it’s simply imperative / And we all have a damn good time.” To me, it is the perfect driving with the windows down and beach song, with a wonderful positive message, which will definitely top my summer playlist this year.

Danielle Tornatore, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Good and Gone” – Seaforth
Songwriters: Gordie Sampson, Josh Miller, Mitchell Thompson, Thomas Jordan

“My pick this month was hands down the easiest and quickest decision I’ve made thus far as part of the NYCS team. Seaforth’s debut EP Love That has been on literal repeat for me since the initial release. The second I heard this particular track, I replayed it about twenty times that night and could not get enough. It contains the two things I love most in a song; heartbreaking lyrics masked by an upbeat tune, essentially making it a breakup jam. I’m still listening to it at least five times a day and I hope to hear it live when I see my new favorite duo at CMA Fest next month.”

Shanna Vitaliano, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Heaven Bound Balloons” – Granger Smith
Songwriters: Granger Smith, Andy Albert, Jordan Schmidt

“If anyone is looking for a good cry, give Granger Smith’s new song “Heaven Bound Balloons” a listen. The first time I heard it I had chills, as Smith sings about his kids writing messages on balloons to their grandparents that have passed away.

In the chorus Granger sings, “We wrote we miss you and we love you’/ Told him things are great down here / We spelled it out and sent it up / And we watched it disappear / Sometimes I guess you gotta see it to believe it / ‘Cause right then I knew those blue sky prayers were getting through / When we let go of those heaven bound balloons.”

“Heaven Bound Balloons” is an emotional and easily relatable track, one that speaks right to the heart of losing someone you love. Smith has an incredible way of writing lyrics that really pull you in and hit home.”

Erica Zisman, Contributing Writer

Pick: “Leave Her Wild” – Tyler Rich
Songwriters: Chris DeStefano, Jon Nite, Tyler Rich

This month my song pick came so easily to me. The second Tyler Rich released “Leave Her Wild,” I fell in love with the song- not to mention the “first look” video elevates it completely. The message of the song is what I love so much. It’s about not trying to change the person you fell in love with because they should always be authentic to themselves.

The title “Leave Her Wild,” is such a beautiful sentiment that I relate to on a deep level. I sometimes feel that I am a free spirit that has to conform to meet society’s standards, and I appreciate that though a love song, I am able to connect with Rich’s song in a different way.

“Don’t tame her, try to chain her / The second you do, you’ll break her / Don’t dull that shine that caught your eye / ‘Cause you’re afraid somebody will take her / She ain’t a dial you just turn on and off / She ain’t found, but she ain’t all that lost / If you’re gonna love her, if you’re gonna love her / If you’re gonna love, leave her wild”

Filmore Makes His National Television Debut On TODAY

Filmore Today Show

Earlier this morning, breakout country music artist and one of our 2019 Artists to Watch, Filmore, made his national television debut on NBC’s Today Show. He took the stage during the 10 am-hour with co-anchors, Savannah Guthrie and Jenna Hager, performing his new single “Slower.”

Before performing his infectious chart-climbing single, Savannah and Jenna, came to the stage to introduce and talk to the singer-songwriter. While chatting with Filmore, Jenna mentioned that he has sold out clubs around the country while his music has been streamed more than 60 million times. Before going into his performance Savannah asked Filmore, “Did you know this was going to catch on the way it did?” with him responding humbly, “No, you can’t predict this. You know I write a song and just hope it picks up and you perform and you hope people sing it back and everything that’s been happening I’m beyond grateful and I can barely talk about it, so thank you!”

After the quick interview, Filmore kicked off the morning, giving viewers at home an upbeat and energized performance to remember. At the end of the performance, the studio erupted in cheers, while Savannah and Jenna came back on stage clapping and cheering saying, “That’s how you do it, that was so good!… We love that you were having so much fun, you made us all dance!” making it a moment to never forget.

For those willing to travel Filmore is playing the tri-state area performing tomorrow (May 16th) at The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, NJ while also performing on May 17th at The Palace Theater in Stamford, CT and on May 19th at The Wolf Den in Montville, CT. A Playlist For Those Break Ups When You’re Better Off, Off

Chris Lane Break UPs

We gave you the ultimate break up playlist that contained all the heart-wrenching songs that trigger waterworks. Although breakups are generally associated with sadness, sorrow, and tears, some occur for the better. Not every relationship was meant to be and these country artists explain that in these songs. Here is the playlist that will help you realize you’re better off without that person.

“Better Off” – Renee Blair

We had to kick this playlist off with Renee Blair’s “Better Off”. The songstress first played the track for us during our Swag Session, which is all too relatable for couples who should once and for all call things off. “On again off again, all this drama we’re caught in /  then say shut up and we talk again /  slam the door then we knock knock / this on and off and on again could go on and on and never stop / so maybe we’re just better off, off.”

“You Broke Up With Me” – Walker Hayes

Hayes describes his life now, ever since his girlfriend broke up with him. He’s drinking, partying and hanging with his friends; not even thinking about that girl. So when his ex tries to come back into his life, he’s having none of it. “I know it’s difficult to see me on a roll / But hey, you broke up with me / Yeah, what can I say babe? / You broke up with me”

“Record Year” – Eric Church

Church’s most recent break-up leads to his record year; a clever play on words. The free time allows him to go through his old vinyl records, reconnecting with legendary artists such as George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, and many others. This leads him to happiness that he never had with his ex. “Yeah you’re out there now doin’ God knows how / And I’m stuck here / Havin’ a record year”

“Miss Me More” – Kelsea Ballerini

As Ballerini reflects on her past relationship, she realizes all the things her ex took from her – her lipstick, her heels, her records, and her dreams. She comes to the realization that she missed being herself more than her ex-boyfriend’s presence. “Forgot who I was before I ever kissed you / Yeah, I thought I missed you / But I miss me more”

“Somewhere on a Beach” – Dierks Bentley

Bentley’s girl has just left him, but he will not let that get in the way of his good time. She regrets the ending the relationship and tries to reach him, calling his parents and his friends. However, Bentley is far too distracted by the sights of the beach and his new girlfriend that treats him better than his ex ever did. “Got a new girl, she got it goin’ on / We drink all day and party all night / I’m way too gone to have you on my mind”

“Not Everything’s About You” – Old Dominion

Old Dominion sings about someone who is finally getting over a break-up. He’s going out with his friends and other girls, enjoying life for the first time since she left. “I can hear your name and fall asleep just fine / Yeah, the world don’t revolve around you / Not everything’s about you anymore”

“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – Taylor Swift

One of Swift’s many break-up songs, this one describes an on and off again relationship in which Swift finally calls it quits. “And I’m like, this is exhausting, you know, like / We are never getting back together, like ever”

“New Phone, Who’s This” – Chris Lane

It is a terrible feeling when you get the “new phone who’s this” text from anyone. In this song, Lane does exactly that as he gets sick of his ex blowing up his phone. “’ Cause you keep texting me that you’re missing what we was / You want my love, you want my kiss / All I gotta say is new phone, who’s this”

“Dirty Laundry” – Carrie Underwood

In this song, Underwood discovers a different shade of lipstick on her boyfriend’s dress shirt, coming to the realization that he is cheating on her. She then recalls all of the horrible things her boyfriend has done to her in the past. She then hangs the shirt on the front porch to make sure that he never comes back. “Yeah, I’mma have to hang you out to dry, dry, dry / Clothespin all your secrets to the line, line, line / Leave ‘em blowing in the wind, to say goodbye to you”

“Save it for a Rainy Day” – Kenny Chesney

Chesney has just gone through a break-up and he’s usually pretty down about it. But it is way too nice of a day to be sad, so Chesney is going out to have a good time and not think about her. “’ Cause the sun’s too bright / the sky’s too blue / Beer’s too cold to be thinkin’ ‘bout you / Gonna take this heartbreak and tuck it away / Save it for a rainy day”

“Bartender” – Lady Antebellum

This song is about a girl wallowing at home over some guy who broke her heart. She finally agrees to go out with her friends but demands that the bartender to pour ‘em strong to help her get over him. “Now there’s only one thing left to do / Slip on my favorite dress and sky high leather boots / Check the mirror one last time / And kiss the past goodbye”

“Ain’t Worth the Whiskey” – Cole Swindell

‘Whiskey’ is like Swindell’s public service announcement: he is at the bar to have a good time, not to drink away the pain of his ex leaving. He makes it very clear that’s he’s drinking to honor his friends, the music playing and our armed forces. “But don’t think for a second I’m out to drown your memory / Baby, you ain’t worth the whiskey”

“When it Rains it Pours” – Luke Combs

The second Combs’ girlfriend walked out on him was the second his luck turned. He won money on a lottery ticket, a three-night vacation, a free round of golf and a got Hooters girl’s number; all pretty great things. “I’ve been on one hell of a redneck roll for three weeks now / And it all started on the day that she walked out”

Our Favorite Country Power Couples

Country love songs are some of the best in the business, which might be because country artists seem to really know what relationships are all about. Whether their partner is also a superstar or not, here are some of our favorite country power couples.

Tim McGraw & Faith Hill

This OG country couple and perhaps the greatest of all time has shaped our generation in more ways than one. They’ve recorded together, toured together, and traveled the world, never losing sight of what it means to put family first. No matter how many newcomers pair up, these two will always be #relationshipgoals.

Kelsea Ballerini & Morgan Evans

This gorgeous couple proves that young love can be the real deal. Not only do they have stellar music careers on their own, but their support of each other on and off social media is next level. From guest appearances on the road to adorable pictures with their fur baby, Dibs (see what they did there?) these country crooners are as cute as it gets.

Carrie Underwood & Mike Fisher

This powerhouse pair is a perfect example of finding success both together and apart. With their independent claims to fame (American Idol turned Queen of Country for one, legendary NHL player for the other) and shared initiatives to bring good to the world (they team up to support the End It Movement, a nonprofit organization tackling modern-day slavery) there is nothing these two can’t do.

Keith Urban & Nicole Kidman

Keith Urban may know his way around a stage but his beautiful bride dominates on the silver screen. It seems impossible that a country music superstar and successful actress could have time to make a loving relationship work, but these two make it look easy. They juggle touring, filming, and recording, often on different continents.

Thomas Rhett & Lauren Akins

She may not have be famous on her own but this wife gets as much love in the spotlight as her award-winning husband. Lauren Akins has broken the mold when it comes to marriage fandom, thanks in part to their precious story (they met in first grade), their undeniable connection (watch the “Die a Happy Man” music video and prepare to swoon” and their adorable daughters, Willa Gray and Ada James.

Maren Morris & Ryan Hurd

If you hear a familiar voice on country radio hit “Down to a T”, that’s because it’s Ryan Hurd’s wife and fellow songstress, Maren Morris. After meeting during a songwriter’s session in 2013 (seriously, how perfect is that) the two become friends first before they fell in love and got married in 2018.

Brad Paisley & Kimberly Williams Paisley

Another singer/actress set have been showing us what true love looks like for 15 years. Brad Paisley fell in love with Kimberly Williams at age 19 after seeing her in “Father of the Bride” and the rest is history. As if we couldn’t adore them more, the Paisleys use their philanthropic passions to make a difference in their Nashville community, most recently by breaking ground on a grocery store that will make everyday items available to families in need.

Carly Pearce & Michael Ray

The newest country duo is so cute we can hardly stand it. Their relationship started over direct messages on Instagram, turned into a crush, and as of late last year, led to a proposal. Not only are they beautiful inside and out and stellar together, but they’re also involving the country music community at their wedding – they’ve asked singer Jake Owen to perform for their first dance.
