NYCS First Impression: The Highwomen Self Titled Debut Album

The Highwomen

On paper, The Highwomen might not seem to make much sense. You have pop-country’s reigning “It Girl,” a superstar songwriter, an Americana queen, and a Grammy winner who’s always deserved more attention than she’s received. Yet, somehow, the diverse foursome of Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby, Amanda Shires, and Brandi Carlile is one of the best things to happen to country music this decade.

Today (September 6), the powerhouse quartet released their debut album, The Highwomen, produced by Dave Cobb.

The project was the brainchild of Shires in response to the lack of females on country radio. Carlile was the first member enlisted, and so began the movement of The Highwomen. “Music was happening in the room, and you could almost touch it,” Shires tell the New York Times of the recording process. “It hadn’t happened for me in a long time. We would sing sometimes, and I would get so excited I would almost feel like being a ding-dong and crying.”

The album opens with “Highwomen,” a new female take on “Highwayman,” released in 1985 by the male super-group of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. It sets the tone for the album, imbued with unique stories and powerful harmonies. Originally written by Jimmy Webb, the Highwomen enlisted him to make the lyrical swaps on their new version, which features each taking on the role of a different persecuted woman. “We rewrote it with fates that befell women,” Carlile told Rolling Stone. “A doctor convicted of witchcraft; an immigrant who died trying to get over the border but got the kids over safe and sound; a preacher; and a freedom rider who gets shot.”

The album’s first single, “Redesigning Women,” continues the story being told here, as they sing of modern women who do it all. “Redesigning women/ Running the world while we’re cleaning up the kitchen/ Making bank, shaking hands, driving 80/ Tryna get home just to feed the baby/ Skipping the bread for the butter/ Changing our minds like we change our hair color/ Yeah, ever since the beginning/ We’ve been redesigning women”

While the foursome may be “Redesigning Women,” there’s also no place in their lives for no-good men. This theme carries through “Loose Change” and “Don’t Call Me.” Morris leads the charge on the former, which she co-wrote, proclaiming, “Loose change/ I ain’t worth a thing to you/ Loose change/ You don’t see my value/ I’m gonna be somebody’s/ Lucky penny someday/ Instead of rolling around your pocket like loose change.”

The album continues with a diverse assortment of songs, covering various topics and tempos. The album’s most country song is “My Name Can’t Be Mama,” which easily could’ve been released by the likes of Reba or Dolly Parton thirty years ago. It’s a toe-tapping ode to the perils of motherhood. “I’m not a fan of mornings, and I love my Chardonnay,” they admit. “My name can’t be Mama today.” There’s also the clever “If She Ever Leaves Me,” a nod to Carlile’s sexuality, as she sings of a man attempting to pick up her wife. “If she ever leaves me,” She muses here. “It won’t be for you.”

The album also features heartbreak on “Cocktail and a Song,” written in tribute to Shires’ late father. There’s also the up-tempo “Heaven is a Honkytonk,” which celebrates the fact that all of our heroes are bound to end up in Heaven. “Jesus, He loves his sinners,” They remind us on the track co-written by Ray LaMontagne, “And heaven is a honkytonk.”

Perhaps the album’s most important track is the pre-released, “Crowded Table,” co-written by Hemby, Carlile, and Lori McKenna. Here, they sing of an inclusivity that’s a common thread through the entire album.“I want a house with a crowded table/ And a place by the fire for everyone.” The message here is simple, but necessary, conveyed in a way that feels sincere and poignant without being preachy.

Following the theme of inclusivity, the album features touches from a wide range of Nashville and music industry heavy-hitters, including Sheryl Crow, Yola, and Jason Isbell, as well as co-writes by Rodney Clawson, Lori McKenna, Miranda Lambert, and Ray LaMontagne.  “Anyone can be a Highwoman,” Carlile says in a statement. “It’s about banding together, abandoning as much ego as humanly possible, holding one another up and amplifying other women every chance we get. Shoulder to shoulder. One push, one love.”

Jimmie Allen Releases Nostalgic Video for “Boy Gets A Truck”

Jimmie Allen Boy Gets A truck

Jimmie Allen released the nostalgic music video for the latest song “Boy Gets A Truck,” off of his debut album Mercury Lane. Viewers are taken down memory lane with a special guest appearance by his four-year-old son, Aadyn. The true to himself, newly engaged family man shows off his smooth, strong vocals that pair perfectly with a song that reflects on one’s own upbringing and the role that a truck played in his life. Allen tells a story with a truck being the focal point connecting memories of his life, family, and love. He begins by pulling his own Ford F-150 into the driveway and taking his son out of the car. Before you know it, he is in a Walmart parking lot loading a motorized mini truck onto the back of his Ford to bring home to surprise his son with his very own to drive.

That is where it all begins, as Allen sings in the chorus, “A boy gets a truck, truck gets a girl/Girl gets a midnight feelin’ he’s the one/One night turns to love/Love turns into one knee down/Down payment on a three-bedroom house/Filled with the sound of little feet/Then you blink and he’s askin’ for the keys to pick her up/Boy gets a truck.” Allen’s son meets a little girl his age from the neighborhood and drives her around in the sentimental music video. It all comes full circle for Allen, as he knows years from now that toy truck will turn into his son’s very own drivable one where he will continue to make memories of his own.

Allen is currently playing alongside Michael Ray and Walker County on “The CMT on Tour,” tour and will be making a stop in New York City on Thursday, December 5th at The Gramercy Theatre.

Maren Morris Performs “The Bones” & Chats on Late Night with Seth Meyers

Last night Maren Morris was not on the musical guest but took time to chat with Seth Meyers about her Grammy win as well as the poetic justice that comes along with hearing her songs performed on the same television singing competitions that turned her down.

Meyers congratulated Morris on being the most nominated artist at this year’s CMA Awards, which will air in November. “I wasn’t really expecting that, I think like the big one for me this year, because I put a record out, was Album of the Year but, yeah, I didn’t expect to walk away with so that was very cool,” Morris shared about her nominations. “It’s voted on by my peers in Nashville so, I feel like the cool kid.” She also discussed how she got her start, not at county fairs but standing on a bale of hay in the middle of a parking lot, something Meyers laughed at but she says is true.

She laughed looking back at her American Idol audition where after singing her heart out for 8 seconds, her entire group got cut. “Sorry, you have to take the walk of shame, yeah I just remember being 17 and I had to like walk through the ‘walk of shame’ out to the parking lot and find my mom’s car and just cry on the way home with her, but I mean it all worked out,” she explains.

After her chat, Morris changed out of her multi-colored dress into a sleek, turquoise pantsuit to perform her current single “The Bones”. The love song about a strong relationship follows her number one single, the title track to her album “GIRL”.

Morris is bringing her GIRL: The World Tour to the iconic Radio City Music Hall this Friday night with Kassi Ashton and Hailey Whitters. Follow NYCountry Swag on Instagram for exclusive clips from the show.

CMA Awards Set to Honor Women In Country Music

Just last month the Country Music Association announced that women will be the focus of it’s upcoming 53rd Annual CMA Awards broadcast. Carrie Underwood is returning as host for the November event for the 12th year in a row, and this time she will be joined by female legends Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire.

While prime time country award shows have previously had multiple male hosts (Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley, for example, hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards for two years) and females have done similar gigs solo, this marks the first time a group of women will be teaming up for such an event.

Combined, the three have won a staggering 124 CMA accolades, a number which is sure to increase as these powerhouses continue on in their careers. We’re stoked to watch this special night unfold, and Underwood, Parton, and McEntire are just as pumped as the rest of us, sharing their excitement via social media.

“Let’s go girls! I’m so excited to be joining Carrie Underwood and Reba to celebrate the legendary women of country music” Parton wrote. McEntire echoed the sentiments in a similar post, re-sharing a video clip the CMA released to announce the big news. Underwood, who until now has only hosted the show with Brad Paisley, expressed the pinch-me moment she was having getting to team up with two of her idols, posting “I couldn’t be more excited to get to stand up there with 2 of my personal heroes. Reba and Dolly are trailblazers, icons and legends. We’re gonna make Country Music proud!” accompanied by the hashtag “#DreamComeTrue”.

While we can certainly expect some witty and fun moments to come from the emcees, live performances from other women are bound to be highlights of the night as well. Miranda Lambert, Kelsea Ballerini, Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris and more have had an incredible year, and will most likely grace the stage at some point during the broadcast.

The full list of nominees was announced last week. And it’s safe to say that no matter what happens, we’re in for a special night.

The CMA Awards air live from Nashville, TN on ABC on November 13, 2019.

Home Free Mash Up Country Medley on The Today Show

Home Free TOday Show

You may recognize the Home Free as an American a cappella group of five vocalists acapella group from a few years ago when they competed on the show “The Sing-Off” or from one of our Swag Spotlights last year. The band members include Austin Brown (high tenor), Adam Chance (baritone), Tim Foust (bass), Rob Lundquist (tenor) and Adam Rupp (vocal percussion/beatboxer). Since then the group has been touring the world and this morning in celebration of their album release week, Home Free took the stage at NBC’s Today with Hoda and Jenna to perform a medley of some of country music’s classic hits.

The cohosts introduced the group by chatting with the band asking “What do you want people, when they listen to your music, what do you hope they take from it” they responded. “Just happiness, just joy, just take a little break from life and enjoy some good music.”

The quintet started their performance with Florida Georgia Line’s breakout hit “Cruise” sailing smoothly into Tom Cochrane’s original made even more popular by Rascal Flatts, “Life Is A Highway”. They ended their upbeat a capella performance with John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. As they closed out the song, the invited all three hosts to join them in a sing-along.

After a packed album release week, the band is off on their massive DIVE BAR SAINTS WORLD TOUR is set to kick off on September 18, hitting 16 countries with over 100 shows through October 2020. No matter where you live, there will be a show near you so get your tickets today!

The Best Country Father/Daughter Dance Songs For Weddings

Last week we brought you a list of the top ten mother and son wedding dance songs. This week we’ve got you covered with the top father and daughter dances.

1) “My Little Girl- Tim McGraw

A popular father/daughter dance song choice, “My Little Girl,” was written by Tim McGraw and Tom Douglas. Your dad is your first love, and this is the perfect song to honor him. The song shares a message that no matter how old you get, he will always be there for you even as you start your new journey with your husband.

“You’re beautiful baby from the outside in / Chase your dreams but always know the road that’ll lead you home again / Go on take on this whole world / But to me you know you’ll always be, my little girl”

2) “I Loved Her First” – Heartland

Continuing with the theme of fathers being their daughters first love, “I Loved Her First” fits right in. Written by Walt Aldridge and Elliot Park, the song is the perfect reminder that your dad will always be there for you and you’ll ever have a special place in his heart.

“I loved her first / I held her first / And a place in my heart will always be hers / From the first breath she breathed / When she first smiled at me / I knew the love of a father runs deep”

3) “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” – Billy Ray Cyrus featuring Miley Cyrus

Written by Billy Ray Cyrus and Casey Beathard, “Ready, Set, Don’t Go” tells the story about how every dad probably feels on his daughter’s big day. It’s not easy to say goodbye, but they know they are doing the right thing by letting their daughter take life’s next step.

“She’s waitin’ on my blessings / Before she hits the open road / Baby get ready / Get set / Don’t go”

4) “There Goes My Life”- Kenny Chesney

Written by Neil Thrasher and Wendell Mobley, “There Goes My Life” is a powerful song about how a father can’t picture his life without his daughter and how being a dad changes life for the better.

“There goes my life / There goes my future, my everything / I love you, daddy goodnight / There goes my life”

5) “Tough Little Boys” – Gary Alan

Daughters think of their dads as superheroes and believe that they never cry.  “Tough Little Boys,” written by Donald Sampson and Harley Allen, lets us know that watching their daughters grow up, however, are their weak spots.

“Well I didn’t cry when Old Yeller died /  At least not in front of my friends / But when tough little boys grow up to be dads / They turn into babies again”

6) “I’ll Be There” Josh Turner

Written by Phillip White and Steven Dale Jones, “I’ll Be There” is a great song to honor all the times your dad was there for you when you were younger and the times that he’ll continue to be there, even after you say “I do.”

“Anytime, anything, anywhere / I’ll be there if you need a frowned turned into a grin / Or you need a hand just to hold your hand / Need a daddy or you just need a friend / I’ll be there”

7) “Then They Do” – Trace Adkins

Written by Cathy Majeski, Jim Collins, and Sunny Russ, “Then They Do” tells the story of how quickly children grow up and how your dad misses that time with you, even though it might not have seemed like it when you were younger.

“Then they do / And that’s just how it is /  It’s quiet in the morning /  Can’t believe how much you miss /  All they do / And all they did / You want all the dreams they’ve dreamed of to come true / Then they do”

8) “When She Grows Up” – Craig Campbell

Written by Alex Dooley and Arlos Smith, “ When She Grows Up” is the perfect reminder that no matter how old you get, your dad will always be willing to do anything for you and you’ll never be too old to be his little girl.

“I still want to move mountains / I still wanna change the world /  And show her no matter what happens / She’s my little girl / And love lasts forever”

9) “It Won’t Be Like This For Long”- Darius Rucker

Written by Ashley Gorley, Chris DuBois, and Darius Rucker, “It Won’t Be Like This For Long” is another great song about growing up too fast in front of your dad’s eyes but he cherished every minute, even when times were tough.

“One day soon she’ll be a teenager /  And at times you’ll think she hates him / Then he’ll walk her down the aisle / And he’ll raise her veil /  But right now she up and crying / And the truth is that he don’t mind”

10)  He Didn’t Have to Be”- Brad Paisley

Written by Paisley and Kelley Lovelace this song is perfect if you are sharing the dance floor with your stepfather. “He Didn’t Have to Be,” says thank you to those who stepped up to be a “father figure” when he wasn’t asked to be.

“And then all of a sudden ah it seemed so strange to me/How we had gone from something’s missing to a family/Lookin’ through the glass I think about the man that’s standing next to me/And I hope I’m at least half the dad that didn’t have to be”

No matter what song you pick for your father and daughter dance, it’s a special moment you’ll cherish forever.

Miranda Lambert Gets Down & Dirty in “It All Comes Out in the Wash” Music Video

Miranda Lambert It All Comes Out in The Wash

In the fun, catchy, mud-slinging music video for her latest single, “It All Comes Out in the Wash,” Miranda Lambert and friends get behind the wheel for an off-roading adventure then follow-up trip to the car wash proving it really does all come out in the wash. The song’s chorus is all about going through tough times but knowing it’ll all turn out to be OK.

“‘Cause it’ll all come out, all come out in the wash / It’ll all come out, all come out in the wash / Every little stain, every little heartbreak, no matter how messy it got / You take the sin and the men and you throw ’em all in / And you put that sucker on spin”

Filmed just outside Nashville, Lambert dresses the care-free part in a yellow leopard-print top, jean shorts, and tall boots while her lifted truck is covered in mud. You then see her sitting in the back of the truck while it’s going through the car wash.

Heeding Her Mother’s Advice, Caylee Hammack Releases “Preciatcha”

Caylee Hammack Preciatcha

Capitol Record Nashville’s Caylee Hammack dropped new infectious single “Preciatcha” on August 30th; weeks ahead of scheduled release date, the songwriter announced via social media. Hammack’s elocutionary influences, chic-driven hooks and parallel imagery differentiates the singer-songwriter/producer from others, but in a bigger, luminous way. Hammack’s subtle delivery still fuses aura of her cheek but gratitude. Co-written with Laura Veltz and Jordan Schmidt, Hammack reminisces on past love from a broken relationship and holds those lessons learned near and dear to her heart.

“My mother once told me that every hand you hold is a lesson or a blessing,” shared Hammack in a press release. “If you find good love, you hold on to it. If you find something else by accident, learn what you must from that experience and move on. ‘Preciatcha’ is about searching for a silver lining in a storm. It’s my song for the broken hearts that deserved better but didn’t get it.” Everything happens for a reason, and there’s positivity to be gained from all ordeals and The Bobby Bones Class of 2019 Member preaches her mother’s words singing: “Preciatcha, every time you made me cry / I appreciate ya, even how you said goodbye / Cut me deep, cut me loose, cut me like a piece of paper / But it taught me that isn’t love / So how can I hate ya? / I appreciate ya”

“Preciatcha” follows the Georgia native’s previous single “Just Friends” and her debut “Family Tree.” “Family Tree” was the most added single at country radio for a female artist in over three years. At just 19, the country expressionist moved to Nashville and snuck around with fake IDs to obtain gigs by night, while breaking into the songwriting community by day. She then signed with Universal Music Publishing Group in 2016 as the youngest writer on their roster and then won the ASCAP Foundation’s Sammy Cahn Award. Caylee Hammack is the one to watch.

To keep up with Caylee Hammack follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

“Preciatcha” is now available you buy or stream music. Take a listen below and check out more new recently released music here on our “New Country Music” playlist. Be sure to give the playlist a follow for your weekly new country music fix.
