Sheryl Crow, Chris Stapleton, and Friends Shine on CMT Crossroads

Sheryl Crow Crossroads

Sheryl Crow invited some of her friends for an hour-long special on CMT this past Friday night (9/27) Crossroads: Sheryl Crow & Friends included special behind-the-scenes interviews and intimate performances of songs featured on Crow’s new album, Threads. Instead of the usual Crossroads atmosphere with a large crowd and big stage, this hour-long special was intimate and raw mostly taking place in what seems like an attic turned music room. Guitars hang on the wall and her entire band is playing behind her.

Chris Stapleton is just one of the six artists who joined Crow on the CMT special. Two of the most recognizable voices in the last few decades, Crow and Stapleton sang a song co-written by both of them, “Tell Me When It’s Over.” “When Chris Stapleton says ‘I want to write a song,’ I’m like yes. There’s a few of you who are holding onto that baton and keep it going forward—people who write really great, people who play really great, that know what their influences are. They’re unabashedly unashamed of their influences and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to get you on the record. I just feel like you’re an extension of all the people I’ve loved for me and I love writing with you,” Crow tells Stapleton as they sit down together before their performance.  Crow’s smooth voice blends with Stapletons’s grittiness for the perfect combination. The GRAMMY award-winning songstress played the piano while Stapleton played the guitar.

You can check out the full episode on CMT. In addition to “Tell Me When It’s Over,” you’ll hear these songs on the one-hour special:

“Everything Is Broken” – ft. Jason Isbell; written by Bob Dylan

“Tell Me When It’s Over” – ft. Chris Stapleton; written by Sheryl Crow, Chris Stapleton

“Nobody’s Perfect” – ft. Emmylou Harris; written by Sheryl Crow, Jeff Trott

“Still the Good Old Days” – ft. Joe Walsh; written by Sheryl Crow, Joe Walsh

“Don’t” – ft. Lucius; written by Sheryl Crow

“Live Wire” – ft. Bonnie Raitt; written by Sheryl Crow, Jeff Trott

Her latest studio album, Threads, came out August 30th and features duets with some of the most notable names in music including Johnny Cash, Keith Richards, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson.

“I became inspired to record an album of musical experiences with the legacy artists who inspired me to want to be a great songwriter, musician, and producer. It is a celebration with them, and a tribute to them. Just as importantly, I wanted to work with younger artists on this record, who I believe will pick up the torch and continue to light the way for humanity with their stories and their songs for many years to come. Their music inspires me every day,” Crow says about the album.

To keep up with Crow and her new album, follow her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.

Jon Pardi Celebrates His Album Release at Hammerstein Ballroom

Singer-songwriter, Jon Pardi celebrated the release of his third studio album, Heartache Medication with a show at the historic Hammerstein Ballroom in the heart of New York City on Friday night. The 2017 CMA New Artist of the Year brought along fellow California-native and good friend, Tyler Rich.

As the floor was filling in for Jon Pardi, Tyler Rich entertained the crowd with a mix of tracks from his 2015 EP Valerie, his 2019 self-titled EP, unreleased songs and a variety of covers. Rich expressed that he has been to this venue before to see some of his favorite artists but there was no cooler feeling than performing on stage. He sandwiched a cover of Halsey’s “Without Me” in between his songs “11:11” and “Adrenaline” to start the show before playing a snippet of a slow, new song he did not reveal the name of. He followed that with an upbeat track in “Turn It Up.”

Rich, from Yuba City, California grew up just 55 miles from Pardi’s hometown of Dixon. Ironically, Rich’s uncle coached Pardi’s high school football team. Rich told him that the first time they met at a bar in Nashville. “And since that moment, Jon took me in as one of his best friends in Nashville and just showed me the entire town. And you guys bought tickets to support his new album that just came out but you did not just buy tickets to see one of your favorite country singers, you bought tickets (to see) a good-ass person; he’s one of the nicest guys I ever met.”

Rich then performed an unreleased song he has played at his shows before called “God Made You For a Small Town” which transitioned into a cover of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude”. “Feels Like Home” came next, another unreleased track. He closed his set with his current single “Leave Her Wild” and his hit “The Difference”.

NYCountry Swag caught up with Tyler Rich just before he hit the stage at Hammerstein for a live swag session with the rising artist. Tune in below to catch his acoustic performance of “Leave Her Wild” and interview.

Jon Pardi came out on stage to a new song called “Oughta Know That”, the first of ten songs he performed Friday night off Heartache Medication. He ditched the guitar to sing “Night Shift” off his sophomore album California Sunrise. Pardi told us that he idolized traditional country artists growing up such as George Strait, Dwight Yoakam and Mark Chesnutt, who are never seen without their guitars. Just like his heroes, that was the last song of the night he performed without a guitar in his hands. “Up All Night” from his debut album, Write You a Song was next.

He then played two new songs in “Old Hat” and “Ain’t Always the Cowboy” then went back to older stuff in “Can’t Put Down” and “She Ain’t In It”. Pardi surprised the fans for his next song, “Tequila Little Time” when he brought out an entire mariachi band on stage to perform with him. The audience loved the twist.

Many people believe that country music and The Big Apple do not go together but ask any country artist and they’ll tell you New York has some of the best country fans out there. “They asked me, ‘why would I go to New York City for an album debut?’ Because New York City is awesome; they love country music!” He praised the crowd for the energy they were bringing so far.

After “What I’ve Been Drinking”, he played two more new songs in “Love Her Like She’s Leaving” and album’s lead single “Heartache Medication”. This made the fans rowdier than before. A couple of songs later, Pardi thanked them and country radio for making this next song, “Head Over Boots” number one and really giving him a voice in the industry.

“Me and Jack” is the story of his love/hate relationship with the whiskey. He displayed that story in cartoon form on the screen behind him as he performed the new tune. Another new one, “Tied One Up” was followed by his big hit “Heartache on the Dancefloor”. Pardi talked about how his grandparents were the ones who got him into country music. He dedicated his next song and the final track on the album, “Starlight”, to them. He ended his set with his boot-stomping number one single, “Dirt on My Boots”. Pardi introduced his band, took a bow then walked off stage, concluding the fun-filled, high-energy night, leaving the crowd of country music traditionalists very satisfied.

We’ve seen Pardi as a supporting act on tours with Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley in the past and if you thought he put on a good show then, you have to see him as a headliner. This Jon Pardi was even more animated on stage and even displayed a few dance moves that he’s kept hidden for us.

Pardi will continue the Heartache Medication Tour with special guest Riley Green starting with two sold-out shows at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Find out if he is coming to a city near you by heading to his website.

Lauren Alaina Releases Honest New Track “Getting Good”

Lauren Alaina Getting Good

As we anticipate an upcoming third studio album from the songstress, Lauren Alaina debuted a new song for fans. “Getting Good” follows the sassy and fun single, “Ladies in the ‘90s” and Alaina’s sophomore record Road Less Traveled.

The newest release is a thought-provoking track that begins with a soft instrumental and the singer’s piercing vocals. As the song advances, both Alaina’s vocals and the message get even more powerful. The song encourages listeners to worry less about the future and to live more in the moment. Even more so, the track shows Alaina’s growth as an artist.

“Once I fall in love then I’ll be happy / But then you fall in love and there’s still a hole / Once I get some money it’ll all be easy / But then you get that money and you still feel broke”

Drawing inspiration from the popular quote “grow where you are planted,” the song explodes into an uplifting reminder that happiness comes when you “realize that [your] life’s already good.”

We hope the singer-songwriter drops more music soon, but for now, she will continue to focus on her stint on the new season of Dancing With The Stars. However, she will grace the stage yet again as a singer this January when she kicks off her That Girl Was Me tour with supporting act Filmore. New Yorkers can snag tickets to the January 27th show here.

To keep up with Lauren Alaina follow her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Rachel Reinert Debuts New Music at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC

rachel reinert

You may remember the name Rachel Reinert from her days in the hit country vocal group, Gloriana. Gloriana formed in 2008 when Rachel was just 18 years old and went on to have a successful run on country radio. They opened for Taylor Swift and saw chart success with singles like “Can’t Shake You” and “(Kissed You) Good Night.” But on the heels of success, the country songstress knew she needed to stay true to herself, and left the band to get back to her dream of being a solo artist.

On Thursday night, the former Gloriana member debut several stripped-down new songs to the crowd at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City. She opened with her first solo single, “Cool,” a song she said, “is about first love and heartbreak, and coming out on the other side of it.” As the night got started, she told the crowd how excited she was to be in New York, because this is a time in her life she’s really hopeful about. “I just got married, actually less than four weeks ago. I turned 30, and signed a new record deal — so it’s one of those crazy, great years I’m excited about.”

She launched into a new track called, “Secret,” which explores the burgeoning anticipation around a new romance. Then Reinert opened up to the audience, sharing the story of her last four years. After spending most of her young adult years feeling like she was chasing after someone else’s dreams, she finally made a choice to leave the group. But leaving came with its own set of obstacles that made her feel forgotten and lost by the people that had once supported her. “The whole journey was the inspiration for the next song,” she told the crowd. “I felt like I was existing in the dark and had this light within me, but people hadn’t had the chance to see it yet.”  The beauty of “Dark Star” is its authenticity. It’s a track that doesn’t shy away from ego and disappointment. Reinert strips away the veneer of success and fame to show the other side. The darker side. With flawless vocals on top of everything else.

Next up was the romantic ode to her husband, “Some Kind of Angel,” followed by the in-disguise love song, “Kiss On The Cheek.” “This is about someone in the business world that kept stringing me along,” Reinert smirked as she started the “sneaky little diddy.” Her cover of the Foo Fighters, “Learn to Fly,” was another highlight of the evening. A nod to the classic rock song while fully rooted in who she is as an artist. Soft, sweet, and vocally pristine. She wrapped up the acoustic set with her newest single, “All We Have,” the culmination of the four years that brought her to the present moment in New York. It’s about learning to let go of the ego and fame, and instead focusing on the love around you. Last up was “Ocean,” a track that feels like what it must be like to fight against the tide and come out on the other side.

Rachel Reinert’s album is expected to be released in the Spring of 2020.

Until then, you can find her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

Jason Aldean Reveals Next Track From ‘9’ Titled “Dirt We Were Raised On”

Jason Aldean Dirt We Were Raised On

ACM Artist of the Decade Jason Aldean released a new single titled “Dirt We Were Raised On” from his highly anticipated ninth studio album today, (Sept 27). While not a complete departure from Aldean’s previous singles, it’s definitely fresh-sounding.

“People buy albums with eight songs for 10 bucks now, but with ‘9′ it’s like you’re getting two whole albums at once,” Aldean shared in a press release. “I want fans to feel like they’re getting more than they bargained for and I want it to be something they listen to from top to bottom, and never hit skip…or thumbs down or whatever.”

The track starts with a complimenting acoustic and electric guitar and leads to a natural full-band kick in. The electric guitar almost serves as a baseline for the verses, which makes the song even more memorable. Aldean has always had a very signature sound, classic rock and modern country infused into one, and fans always know what to expect.

Lyrically, the song is all about nostalgia. “Yeah, we drank on it, cranked some Hank on it”. The verses are all about what any small-town boy and his friends did on that dirt road. It’s detailed enough that it feels personal to Aldean, but universal enough that so many can place themselves in the song.

In each chorus of the song, he sings, “We’ll never be too far gone from the dirt we were raised on”. It’s almost like he’s reminding himself that he’ll never be too proud to reminisce about his past and want to go back to where he came from. What strikes us most about this song is its production and instrumentation. Aldean could have easily fallen into a formulaic radio-ready song, but he didn’t. He had the listener focus on section changes in a song that’s 3 minutes and 36 seconds long.

Aldean’s ninth studio album 9 is out November 22nd. Catch him on his upcoming “We Back” tour with special guests Morgan Wallen and Riley Green.

NYCS First Impression Kalie Shorr ‘Open Book’

Kalie Shorr Open Book

If you’re looking for a record that is honest, raw, and relatable with a delightfully unique perspective, look no further than Kalie Shorr’s debut record Open Book. The new project gives us a front row seat into the songstress’ life experiences, her thoughts, and her feelings, all wrapped up with pretty melodies and enticing vocals. Shorr delivers an impressive melding of genres while remaining true to her songwriter roots, co-writing and co-producing each and every one of the 13 tracks.

The record begins with the essence of an old-western instrumental in “Too Much To Say,” but it is the opening line that packs quite the punch. The track sets the tone for the rest of the album, as Shorr exclaims in the opening lyrics, “I’ve never been worse, thanks for asking / Is it making you nervous, all this honesty?!,” only to add later that she’s an “open book.” She reminisces again in “Big Houses,” a cut that comes later on the tracklist that depicts positive moments with her mother, while still having a somber layer of wishing to be anywhere but ‘here’.

“Escape” and “Messy” follow the first song. The former is the listener’s first introduction to her demons. She unapologetically attests to how her struggles in her childhood led her to seek love in the wrong places and to find her own version of an escape. She sings, “Everybody needs an escape / And mine was leaving.” The later also shows off Shorr’s vocals. In “Messy,” the singer-songwriter plays with her vocal range while seeking answers as to why her relationship ended the way it did.

Shorr continues to explore how she felt in a former relationship in “The One.” Between the clever wordplay and tempo-changes, “The One” is a stand-out song on the tracklist. For different reasons, “F U Forever” is arguably one of the most impressive songs off the project. In the upbeat jam, the songstress empowers women to wear their heartbreak and vulnerability like a badge of honor.

Her impressive use of wordplay and expressive singing is apparent again in “Alice in Wonderland.” Besides being cleverly titled, the song is another explorative track with strong imagery about wanting to escape from a bad relationship. Relating the song to the movie ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is not only brilliant but reminds us all of our vulnerabilities. “Wonder if you’re good enough / Or if you’re the only one / You wonder if he’s lying again.”

As we delve deeper into Shorr’s masterpiece, she openly shares her grieving process with us in “The World Keeps Spinning.” In memory of her late sister, the singer laments about how hard it is to get through a day, when you lose someone you love, “The sky didn’t even have the decency to cry / And that damn sun / Still found a way to shine / When my heartaches hitting / I think it’s kinda cruel that the world keeps spinning.” The powerful ballad is for anyone that has ever experienced loss.

After tugging at our heartstrings, Shorr switches gears and delivers three more upbeat tracks that fans of recent Taylor Swift and Alanis Morissette would love. In “Gatsby,” she sings the sarcastic sentiment, “people like me because I’m happy.” The song rivals the Morissette classic “Ironic.” As for, “Thank God You’re a Man,” the play of tempos feel like Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” or “Red” by Swift. It will have you singing along after just one listen. Finally, “Vices” will have you relating to Shorr’s struggles with her “vices” and hopefully help you to give yourself compassion for not always making the ‘right’ decisions.

Continuing to play with the gamut of emotions, Shorr shares her journey through heartbreak in her current radio single “Lullaby”. The ethereal song was inspired by the end of a six-year relationship. She takes us through the process of moving on both lyrically and rhythmically. The beautiful track begins with just Shorr’s voice shining through an acoustic guitar evolving into a full instrumental backing track. She sings “This is the sound of letting it go / of learning to sleep and your sleeping alone / of figuring it out how to love when you don’t.

The record ends with “Angry Butterfly.” The obscure titled song begins with heavier guitars and polarizing vocals. Shorr admits to being a ‘walking contradiction,’ relishing in the “beauty in the breakdown.” It’s the perfect way to bookmark a thoughtful and innovative debut.

Open Book is a catalog of songs for the individual, who is looking to find healing in the music. As Shorr shared in a recent press release, “These songs are like three minute journal entries,” adding, “I’m happy to have the freedom to share my truth on this album.” Shorr’s refreshing perspective is one that will surely resonate with music fans across many genres, but her niche at perfectly speaking her truth, while still standing up for women is arguably what will keep her successful in the industry for a long time to come.

To catch some of these songs live along with your favorite cover songs, come to our Manhattan By Sail on October 11th where we will feature Kalie Shorr as our musical guest. More information and tickets available here.

Lauren Davidson Releases Optimistic “Soaking Up Every Second”

Swag Spotlight alum and local artist, Lauren Davidson, is back with a new single, “Soaking Up Every Second”, a positive anthem to live life to the fullest, never letting a single moment pass you by.

Written by Davidson and Adam McDonough “Soaking Up Every Second” starts with guitar and drums to a tune that will easily have you on your feet in no time. The New Jersey native quickly joins in with her astounding vocals, once again showing off what vast range she has. While the track is upbeat and fun, it shares a powerful message.   It reminds us that we shouldn’t wish our lives away by continuously counting down the days until the next big thing. Instead, we should be enjoying every second of the journey we are currently on, no matter where it may take us.

“I’ve been waiting at the station / But when the train comes I ain’t gonna take it / Life is rolling set in motion / But I’m gonna stop here in my tracks / I won’t wish away my life, waste away my time / I just want to make the most of where I’m headed /  I’m soaking up every second”

This is the second single released by Davidson this year, “Live Laugh Love” was released in May. While “Soaking Up Every Second” has a different tune from the rock-country anthem, they both share the similarity of showing off the singer-songwriter’s talent to cowrite powerful music.

Carly Pearce and Lee Brice Duet on “I Hope You’re Happy Now”

Carly Pearce Lee Brice

Carly Pearce, who was nominated for CMA Awards New Artist of the Year after such a successful year with singles “Every Little Thing” and newest release “Closer To You.” As she is putting the final touches on her sophomore album, Pearce released a sneak peek of her new song, “I Hope You’re Happy Now” which features country superstar, Lee Brice, earlier this week.

“I Hope You’re Happy Now” is a honey-soaked, whiskey-drenched track which makes for such a painfully truthful, raw, and real song. Written by Pearce herself alongside Luke Combs, Jonathan Singleton, and Randy Montana, the team wrote a song everyone can relate to.

The newest CMA nominee shared in a press release, “I am so excited to share such a personal part of my story with one of the best male vocalists in our format. Lee has the kind of gruff yet vulnerable quality to his sound that I envisioned for this duet and am grateful he agreed to join me.”

The song starts out with a classic country sound as Pearce and Brice’s vocals quickly fill the airwaves. With the opening lyrics stating, “I said I don’t love you a little too late / But I guess there ain’t ever a right time,” this song is intriguing off the bat. Moving into the chorus, “Well I guess you found what you were looking for / I guess my heart ain’t worth it anymore // I’m a wreck, I’m a mess / And I ain’t got nothing left / So I hope you’re happy now,” it speaks to a situation we have either been in personally or seen someone we know go through.

The two shared a short video on their Instagrams earlier this week for fans to listen to and reading the comments, we can tell people were very excited about this duet. Hearing both great sets of vocals, this song will be one that hits you hard. “It was an absolute pleasure working with Carly on this track,” said Lee. “She has such a beautiful and powerful voice and definitely has a huge career ahead of her.” Take a look at the lyric video below!

Pearce is currently on the road with Jason Aldean’s Ride All Night Tour while Brice is headlining shows across the country up until the Christmas season.
