Kane Brown and John Legend Collaborate on “Last Time I Say Sorry”

This new collaboration with Kane Brown and John Legend is everything the music world needs in its discography: a quick-rise-to-the-charts country artist that is described to have a voice unparalleled to its vessel and a warm-hearted master that calms the souls of those fortunate enough to listen.

The arrangement of this track is perfect. It’s a tricky business when a singer lends his or her voice to a song because of the delicacy of music production. However, “Last Time I Say Sorry” delivers two things to make it an accomplished partner piece.  First, each artist is given the space to sign their name, as if it was their own, by utilizing their signature styles. For example, Legend sets the stage as if it’s a classic dedication to his wife, Chrissy Teigen, and attends to his soulful runs before Brown comes into the lead singer role for the second half of the verse.

Secondly, the chorus is where these incredibly respected and admired musicians join to portray the chemistry, that is evident within the track, first-hand. This is where Legend explores background vocals, still maintaining his artistic tendencies. At the same time, Brown is on brand and executes his laid back, storytelling abilities.

“I won’t say I’m sorry over and over / Can’t just say I’m sorry, I’ve gotta show you / I won’t do it again, I’ll prove my love is true / I hope the last time I said sorry / Is the last time I said sorry to you”

Together, Brown and Legend are truly iconic. These men show vulnerability, regret, love, and compassion while, at the same time, showcase their strength and masculinity. In response, a widely successful partnership is created. The mature vocals solidify this production and provide listeners with a raw, deep surge of something genius.

Jordan Davis Releases Arguably His Best Song Yet: “Detours”

Today is a great day for new music in the country world. Rising artist and one of our 2018 Artists to Watch, Jordan Davis just released another new song entitled “Detours,” a follow-up, “Trouble Town” and “Cool Anymore.”

The new track may be one of Davis’ most personal to date. Co-written by the singer with his brother Jacob Davis and Dave Turnbull, Davis takes fans through the ups and downs in his life’s journey. The first verse depicts his experience as a little bit of a rebel. He sings “I was a renegade ragtop, revvin’ up an engine,” adding later a vulnerable time in his life, “Parents got divorced, kinda dog that would bite ya / And I’d love ‘e and I’d leave ‘em it was what it was.”

Unexpectedly, Davis switches gears in the second verse, sharing with fans that meeting his wife was the turnaround point in his life. The song made a sweet turn into a long song for his life partner, sharing how they met, as long as, all the reasons that she makes him a better person.

“Sittin’ with a group of friends and sippin’ on a glass of red / And I don’t remember what I said but she wrote her number down / All I ever wanted but never knew I needed / She’s the dotted lines and every sign that led me straight to Jesus / Was a voice that made me hit the brakes, slow it down, have some faith”

Arguably this is one of the best Davis songs to date. He lays his heart on the line for fans to bear witness to, while remaining sonically pleasing. We hope to hear more tunes like this from Davis, as we anticipate his sophomore record.

Alex Hall Drops New Track “Whiskey On The Table”

Alex Hall Whiskey On the Table

We don’t know about you, but New Music Fridays are one thing that has helped our mood during these strange times, and this week is no different. One of our NYCS Swag Spotlight Alum is back with new music! Alex Hall just released his first song of 2020, “Whiskey on the Table.”

Written by AJ Babcock, Pete Good, and Hall, “Whiskey on the Table” is a powerful song about a relationship ending. The way it is written and how the singer-songwriter delivers the lyrics, you feel as if you are going through the breakup in real-time.

Starting with a guitar solo, the Georgia native isn’t afraid to show his rocker side. He then goes into telling the story of someone willing to give up their records, a shirt, even their whole town to the person who broke their heart. Their only request is to keep the whiskey so they can deal with the heartbreak. We’ve all been there, haven’t we?

While we are all uncertain about the postponement of shows, Hall is scheduled to have a busy spring and summer. He is scheduled to tour the southeast in conjunction with Sofar Sounds and attend a few major festivals, including Shaky Boots, Trailblazer, Tailgate Fest, Hometown Rising, and C2C. Pending schedule changes, you can also catch him on tour with Brandy Clark.

NYCS First Impression: Jessi Alexander ‘Decatur County Red’

By now, you are probably familiarized with Jessi’s Alexander’s work. With a collective 70 hits under her belt such as “The Climb” Miley Cyrus, “I Drive Your Truck” Lee Brice and “Mine Would Be You” Blake Shelton, Decatur County Red is the artist’s first original release since 2014’s Down Here.

Produced by Alexander, Jon Randall, and Leslie Richter and recorded at Zac Brown’s Southern Ground studio with an array of Nashville’s top castings, Decatur County Red is an open letter of the Jackson, Tennessee born singer + songwriter’s most vulnerable and humble makings. This collection of stories compose first tastings of heartbreak and resilience, tap back into the singer’s musical influences and is dedicated to, “the folks that love sad songs, beer joints, pedal steel, and country music,” Alexander expressed in a press release.

Title-track “Decatur County Red” is autobiographical. Every word that drips from Alexander’s lips is authentically lived and bona fide to the singer’s makings. It sustains conventional country customs, brimmed with twangy, outlawish-guitar, inspired by a cabin in Decatur County left to Alexander by her grandmother.

The first single, “Mama Drank,” which she performed for us during our Swag Session was written by Alexander her husband Jon Randall, is an ode to her own actualities of motherhood as a mom-of-three while “Damn Country Music,” recorded by Tim McGraw, depicts the hardships that occupy the road to becoming a country music songwriter in Nashville over silky instrumentation showcasing the singer’s soulful vocals singing: “The hum of wheels on the blacktop // The strum of strings on a flat top // It’s a neon fever for a small-town dreamer // Tells you everything you have that’s worth losin’ // Damn country music // You might get lost in the lights // The things that keep you up all night // Whiskey straight, three AM // Chasin’ songs in your head // It’s the sweetest highs, the lowest lows // Needin’ yes and hearin’ no // Just another so-so // Believe me I know”

“I Should Probably Go Now” shows Alexander’s sultry, vulnerable side as she paints the story of a smokey bar introducing a forbidden love story of infidelity. “Country Music Made Me Do It” featuring powerhouse Randy Houser, encourages a boot-stopping, backyard barnyard aura that incites you to stop everything you’re doing to get up and show what you got. “Lonely Out Of Me” partners up with “I Should Probably Go Now” encompassing the singer’s soft side creating a haunting ambiance while “How I’m Going Out” closes the album. The ladder was recorded by Dierks Bentley on The Mountain. The song welcomes a warm guitar throughout the duration of the song comfortingly accepting fate. She sure as hell will be going out with a legacy. She sings: “And when it’s my turn to jump off this carousel // I’m gonna ride on that white horse and run like hell // Be thankful for the friends I’ve made // The hungry years, the glory days // Give ’em one more song and lay this guitar down // That’s how I’m going out”

Exclusive Premiere: baker grissom Drops New Song & Video “workin’ man”

“Nothin’ left of me, I’m just beer and bones, corner booth cliche, playing jukebox drinkin’ songs”

Last year when songwriter and artist baker grissom released his debut EP Saturdays and Sunday we were immediately hooked on his clever lyrics and polished delivery. Much like “You Are Who You Listen To” and “Right Bar Wrong Stool” which envelope the listener with brilliant songwriting, released today, “workin’ man” does the same.

When the title of a song gives one impression, yet the actual storyline is different than you expected, you know you’ve got a great one coming through your speakers. Written by grissom along with Ben Stennis and produced by Stennis and Jeremy Stover,  “workin’ man” chronicles getting through a breakup and all of the measures you can try and take to dull the pain.

The official music video, premiering exclusively on NYCountry Swag today, showcases the singer-songwriter working on cars, sitting in a quiet bar, and performing the track, all while regretfully realizing that nothing is working to help with the heartache. Whether it’s time or someone new, getting lost in the same old routine doesn’t seem to be changing things. In the chorus he laments: ” I got them whiskey doubles shootin’ double shifts / Pullin’ overtime getting over this, raise ’em up, knock ’em back, line ’em up again, ah but it ain’t workin’ man…this neon ain’t nothin’ to lean on, but I’m doin’ the best I can, but it ain’t workin’ man”.

NYCS First Impression: Ingrid Andress ‘Lady Like’

Ingrid Andress Lady Like

Since bursting onto the scene with her unique brand of piano-infused country, Ingrid Andress has been one of the genre’s most exciting and fastest rising stars. Today (March 27), she releases her debut album, Lady Like, which shows no sign of the songstress slowing down. From the album’s opening notes of “Bad Advice” through its closing title track, it’s abundantly clear why Andress has repeatedly been named one of the genre’s brightest new artists, including one of our 2020 Artists to Watch.

From the opening notes of the endlessly catchy, “Bad Advice,” Andress is in full control, her talent on display. The lyrics catch you immediately, as she begins, “I drove down to Trader Joe’s/ Straight to aisle five/ Got a bottle of Merlot/ ‘Cause my friend told me/ If I drink the whole thing/ Then I wouldn’t think about you/ And after glass two/ Well, I’d be brand new.” In just a few bars, the tone for the album is set. Andress is blunt and brilliant here, each song co-written by her, with lyrics that tell stories in a way rarely seen in country music. Here, she’s magically a perfect mix of brilliant yet relatable, humorous yet poignant.

While the album kicks off with an up-tempo, Andress shines on the ballads, akin to a modern country version of Sara Bareilles. This is evident on the achingly beautiful “More Hearts Than Mine” and her unique take on defining a relationship in “We’re Not Friends.” On the former, she plans to take a new love to meet her family, warning him that ending their relationship will affect her family more than her. “If I bring you home to Mama/ I guess I better worn you/ She falls in love a little faster than I do,” She warns. “If we break up, I’ll be fine/ But you’ll be breaking more hearts than mine.”

“We’re Not Friends” tells the story of a couple who desperately needs to define their relationship, but simply calls themselves friends. “Friends are something that we were/ Before me sleeping in your shirt,” Andress admits. “But baby we’re past that now/ Friends don’t do the things we do/ Friends don’t use the words we use/ Yeah, friends can just hang out.”

Another of the album’s highlights is “Life of the Party,” which shows Andress putting on a brave face despite living with a broken heart. Here it’s 3 am and she’s still going strong, while no one knows that she’s hurting. She’s the life of the party here to hide her broken heart, and it’s all too familiar a sentiment.

For Ingrid Andress, Lady Like is a beautifully cohesive piece of work that every music fan would be remiss in ignoring. The only downside here is the album’s length, caught somewhere between an EP and a full-length release with only eight tracks, many of which have been previously released. However, the eight tracks that Andress has given us are a beautiful collection of songs and stories that are sure to cement her place in the musical landscape among the likes of music’s big names.

Lakeview Sings of Missing Obvious Red Flags in “Eyes Closed”

We’ve all been there, all of the people in your life are telling you to stay away from someone but you are blinded by love. In their brand new song, “Eyes Closed”, dropped today (3/27) new country duo, Lakeview is personifying those sentiments. Combining a unique blend of country, rock, and pop, the Pittsburgh natives are fresh on the scene.

The track chronicles a small-town love story gone awry and all of the missed signs that could have helped prevent heartbreak. Written by Lakeview bandmembers Jesse Denaro and Luke Healy along with Kevin Baird, “Eyes Closed” is the second offering from the new group, the first being “Poor Me”, which video has garnered over 170 thousand views. When the chorus drops, the realization hits: “Looking back, I wish I would’ve known not to kiss you with my eyes closed.”

In conclusion, when you feel like the wool is being pulled over your eyes in a relationship, always trust your mama, she knows best.

Florida Georgia Line Drop Relevant Track, “I Love My Country”

Florida Georgia Line is back with new music, and it’s a song that will have you up on your feet loving our country. “I Love My Country” is the award-winning duos first song off their highly anticipated fifth studio album, which we can expect later this year.

In a time of uncertainty, we may not like or agree on what’s going on in the United States right now. Still, Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley remind us why our country continues to be a great place to live, with a reminder to keep having a good time and enjoy life the best that we can right now. They also wanted to pay tribute to the anything-goes lifestyle that their fans can’t do without.

Written by Corey Crowder, Ernest K. Smith, and Charlie Handsome, the song has a sound of hard-edged Southern Rock stomp with a rolling banjo. With their familiar and perfect blend of the singer-songwriter voices that we love, it has set the tone for Tyler and Brian’s exciting next chapter in their career.

Florida Georgia Line is set to hit the road on the Chillaxification Tour with Kenny Chesney, Old Dominion, and Michael Franti & Spearhead. While the beginning of the tour has been postponed, we are keeping our fingers crossed that the hottest show of the summer makes its way to New York at MetLife Stadium on August 22nd. Kelsea Ballerini & Halsey Collaborate on CMT Crossroads

On the heels of the release of her studio album entitled kelsea, country’s princess Kelsea Ballerini joined pop superstar Halsey on stage for an episode of CMT Crossroads. Filmed at Nashville’s Ascend Amphitheater in October 2019, the two powerhouses performed for a live crowd, while rain poured down, almost threatening cancellation. Luckily the show went on, and boy are we thankful it did!

Perfectly paired the two even share a song on Ballerini’s new record. The songstresses performed that tune, “the other girl,” trading verses to the impactful song. The new duet tells the story of solidarity among two women who are seemingly dating the same man, who is cheating on them both.

Ballerini and Halsey join forces on several of their songs, during the course of the night, including a rendition of Ballerini’s “Peter Pan” and the inspiring “homecoming queen.” Ballerini also lends her vocals to Halsey’s hit “Bad At Love,” a song about problematic relationships, as well as, “Graveyard” and “Without Me.”

Just prior to performing ‘homecoming queen,” Halsey praised Ballerini for bringing the song to life. “If there is anything song that I wish I wrote,” she said, “ it is “homecoming queen” by Kelsea Ballerini!” Of course, fans erupted into cheers, as the two singers went on to sing the heartfelt ballad.

On the contrary, during Halsey’s songs, the two singer-songwriters jammed out and showed off their sassy style. Both performances of “Bad At Love” and “Graveyard” were highlights of their creative and fun set. The same energy was applied to their rendition of Ballerini’s “Miss Me More.”

Another highlight came when the two ladies gave a dazzling cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams.” Their vocals shined on the mesmerizing tune. It was almost hard to believe that it wasn’t an original.

Overall, once again Crossroads delivered a special and enticing combination of two top-notch songstresses in the music industry. Halsey and Kelsea are true superstars, and we hope to see them perform together again in the future.
