Keith Urban Reminisces in New Track “Superman”

Keith Urban Superman

Country superstar, Keith Urban released a new track titled “Superman,” last Friday (July 17th) and a music video to go along with it. The song will feature on the Urban’s upcoming project, The Speed of Now Part One, coming out September 18th, along with other previously released tracks, such as “Polaroid,” “God Whispered Your Name,” “We Were.’

Although the idea around the song is sad, the upbeat tempo and colorful video make “Superman” a feel-good, summer jam. Urban reminisces on his time spent with a particular girl and how when they were together, he felt like a superhero. In the video, Urban sings the first verse as a cartoon sketch, and when the chorus comes around, he is brought to life in front of imaginative scenery. Watch it below:

Urban, who is up for ACM Male Artist of the Year, is scheduled to host the award show on September 16th, two days before his album release. Check out the full list of nominees here.

NYCS Swag Spotlight: Hudson Valley

We especially love introducing our followers to country artists and groups who are from our home state of New York. This week’s Swag Spotlight fits the bill. Hudson Valley is a new female-fronted country band that is rooted in country vocals with a rock-infused sound, all while keeping with a fresh perspective that comes from growing up in New York.

We chatted with the lead singer, Sarah Owens and her drum-playing husband, Richie, one of the members of her band, all about their journey together, their new music, and how the landscape of country music has changed over the years.

Both Sarah and Richie grew up in Hudson Valley, New York, but it was Sarah who always dreamed of playing music. “It was always music,” she tells us, “There’s never been another option for me […] I was going to be a country singer,” adding later, “For me, I always sang country music, it was always my thing.” Sarah grew up on female powerhouses in the country music genre like Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Faith Hill, and Trisha Yearwood, despite her friends being interested in other genres, and country music not getting the recognition it deserved in New York during her upbringing.

Although she played music her entire life, including playing in a cover band with her husband, it wasn’t until 2018, when she and her new husband finally made the big move to Nashville. “Once we came down here, it was just all country all the time, and I was like, finally, we were where we needed to be,” she explains. The plan originally was to continue to write and eventually release music as a solo female artist; however, an industry executive suggested that she create a band instead. After a night out with her husband and two other potential band members, Hudson Valley was formed.

 

Currently, Sarah fronts the band with Richie playing drums, Andrew Kopek on bass, and Matthew Farinelli on guitar. The foursome combined their influences in the rock, punk rock, and country music genre to create a sound that makes Hudson Valley so authentic and unique. Because of the vast influences, the songstress tells us, “With being influenced by rock music, Hudson Valley is [essentially] a rock band with country lyrics.”

That notion is ever present in their newest released single “Right Place Now.” Ironically, the romantic country-rock jam was the first song that Sarah ever co-wrote during her trip to Nashville in 2017, just before she moved. “I had always written my own music, but I had her written music with people who had number one songs. I was scared to death,” she shares with us about writing with fellow country artist Sheri Austin.

After getting the idea one night after seeing Vince Gill perform at the coveted Grand Ole Opry, she took the title “Right Place Now” to a write, ultimately creating the song. “I wanted it to be something about being in the right place now. As much as it was about being in Nashville because that’s where I feel like I belonged,” she explains, “It suddenly became about my husband. As much as it’s about a place, it’s about a love at the same time.” The brand new single ultimately has its root in Nashville but is relatable because of the romance.

We think this is only the beginning for Hudson Valley. Their unique perspective on country music will keep them in the limelight for sure, as they continue their journey. Currently, the band has a residency at Blake Shelton’s bar, ‘Ole Red’ in Nashville and plan to release three more songs before the year is up. The group also promises that they will be out there touring again when it is safe for fans to come to shows, and hopefully playing venues in New York! Until then, fans can enjoy their new single and their previously released project Seven.

A Thousand Horses Cheers to Heartbreak in “A Song to Remember”

A Thousand Horses A Song To Remember

 

The country music band A Thousand Horses are back, collaborating with producer Dave Cobb again on new music. The group released their brand new song entitled “A Song to Remember” today, marking their first single from their upcoming album, Let the Band Play On, and with their new label home.

Lead singer Michael Hobby co-wrote the track with Brett Warren, Brad Warren, and Christopher Stevens. “A Song to Remember” is a catchy, southern-rock jam written during the phase after a breakup. The men lament about the suffering one feels during heartbreak and the array of emotions that follow suit. Their gritty vocals and enticing lyrics make help fans to have empathy for the protagonist.

“I need a song to remember / And a drink to forget / I’m on my way to gettin’ over you / But I ain’t there yet / When the melody hits me, a little Coke in my whiskey / I’m as close to good as I can get / I need a song to remember / And a drink to forget”

This quasi-positive mentality is refreshing in a break-up song. The track overall is a perfect song that compliments the skill-set and talent of the members of A Thousand Horses. “’A Song To Remember’ is about being stuck in the purgatory of heartbreak and dealing with the rollercoaster of emotions that comes along with it,” said guitarist Bill Satcher. “We always love working with our old pal Dave Cobb, and to have Warner Music Nashville in our corner alongside Low Country Sound/Elektra means the world to us.”

NYCS First Impression: The Chicks ‘Gaslighter’

Country music fans have been waiting fourteen years for The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, to rise from the ashes, and boy are they about to set fire to everything we ever knew about them in the best possible way. The powerful trio of songstresses is ready to share their truth with the world and lean into their brazen, rebellious side. Gaslighter is a masterpiece that was released at the absolute perfect time.

The Chicks’ evolution has been a long time in the making, and the new record is both sure to burn some bridges and build some new ones. The record is full of humor, pain, and honesty beginning with the album’s title track, “Gaslighter.” It is the perfect introduction to everything that makes this record what it is. The song is a reminder to all the naysayers that they are strong and independent women. The word itself is a not so subtle message about what the ladies have endured as products of their environment back in the heyday; however, the song is something special.

“March March,” is an in-your-face political tune about the power and importance of protest. It is sure to spark some controversy, but clearly The Chicks aren’t holding anything back, which is an evident theme throughout the entire record. In the same vein, “For Her” is another outcry for women. The beautiful harmonies shine as the songstresses pose the ideals of standing up for one another, standing up for your younger self, and showing up for yourself and other women simultaneously.

Heartbreak, bad experiences, and marital discord with men is another theme that is weaved throughout many songs on the record. In the heartbreaking ballad, “Everybody Loves You,” The Chicks break-down the hardships of ending a relationship, where your ex is loved by everybody. The singers examine that relational dynamic and divorce again in the story-telling song “My Best Friend’s Weddings;” however in this song, the ladies learned that they actually prefer their own company. “I’ve never seen her look more happy / Guess from ashes we can really grow”.

The Chicks continue to channel their angst and new-found confidence in “Tights On My Boat,” where they call out a cheating ex in a comedic, yet dark lyrical prose. Despite the subject matter, the song has an anthemic feel about it. Of course, “Sleep at Night” is another, not so subtle, message that reveals cheating rumors to be true. Ironically, the ladies cleverly place “Texas Man,” an outlier on the record, after the latter, which showcases some hope and romanticism for a post-split life.

In back to back songs, the ladies share their experiences of how divorce can impact kids. In “Julianna Calm Down,” the ladies give advice to women, who are in the throws of disintegrated relationships, naming all their children and nieces on the track. The ladies turn heartbreak into women empowerment in this necessary track, which was written by Julia Michaels, Jack Antonoff, and Natalie Maines. “You’re gonna make it through / So just put on, put on, put on your best shoes / And strut the fuck around like you’ve got nothing to lose”

“Young Man” addresses the sons that have been impacted. Specifically written for Maines’ son, the songstress encourage him and other boys to not take on the pain of the adults. The bluegrass tune is both inspiring and sad all at the same time.

Finally, the last two songs on the record have the ladies facing their pain and trials head-on. “Hope It’s Something Good” examines the heartbreaking reality that a twenty-plus year relationship is over. The vulnerability of the song is sure to resonate with fans across music genres. With that being said, the ladies end the record on a different note with “Set Me Free.” Although equally as emotive, the ballad feels like a release of pain and hurt, expressing a readiness to move on and find happiness again. It expresses closure both literally and figuratively.

The Chicks have found a way to take us through their journey for the last twenty years through their music. Gaslighter, though maybe not what fans expected or hoped for, is a fully cohesive album that is exactly what we needed. The Chicks have created a completely new space for themselves in the music scene and have really upped the ante for other artists to speak their truth in their music.

[Listen] LANCO Drops Brand New Track Titled “Save Me”

LANCO continues to showcase their folk-country sound and honest lyrics with their new track titled, “Save Me.” This is the double-platinum, country group’s first release since October when they dropped “What I See” and “Old Camaro.”

“Save Me” is a song about a lost, troubled man who meets a girl that helps him not only find love but find himself. Backed by a string-heavy production, the feelings become physical as lead singer, Brandon Lancaster describes his attraction for this woman in the second verse with the suggestive lyrics, “My addiction to this friction is like the skin against your jeans.” The slow tempo of the song amplifies when the chorus comes around.

“I’ve been lost and I found you / You can be the someone to / hold me close and make me believe / You could save me”

Although they have not been releasing new music like other artists, LANCO has stayed busy during the pandemic performing virtually on multiple live streams and for personal parties, appearing on an episode of P.K. Subban’s NHL Trivia show, and partnering with the non-profit organization, Purposity to raise money for families in need and much more.

LANCO was supposed to open for Miranda Lambert on her Wildcard Tour, which has been pushed back to start in October, but given the current state of the country, those shows are likely to be postponed again or canceled completely.

“Save Me” may be the first of many new songs coming from LANCO. The band already has “What I See,” “Old Camaro” and “Rival” to feature as the first few songs on their upcoming sophomore album.

Our Favorite Covers of “Fast Car” & “Cover Me Up” by Country Artists

Sometimes country artists like to cover songs by other artists, but in and outside the genre. We love it when it just works. Lately, two songs seem to be tugging at the heartstrings by many artists in the country genre.

Tracy Chapman’s soulful and incredible song “Fast Car” seems to be a favorite by many artists across genres. Since its 1988 release, it has gained more and more traction and has become an iconic song and melody in the music industry. Artists like Justin Bieber and Passenger have shared their versions, and now, it seems, many country artists are following suit. “Cover Me Up” originally by Jason Isbell also appears to be a crowd-favorite, despite coming out in 2013. With artists like Taylor Swift and Zac Brown Band singing their praises, country artists have paid attention too!

Here are a few of our favorite country music covers below!

 

  1. Luke Combs

Of course, superstar, Luke Combs has to top our list. After fans begged him to sing this song, Combs obliged, and his performance went viral. The video was viewed almost a million times in just 24 hours. Combs’ version is vocally-pleasing, yet effortless, and we cannot get enough of it!

  1. Levi Hummon

Our Swag Session alum, Levi Hummon is vocal about his love for “Fast Car.” He often covers the song, during his live shows, and it’s clear his fans are receptive to his simple and modern rendition. Hummon’s version feels authentic and believable to his story and parallel to his songwriting.

 

 

  1. Morgan Wallen

Morgan Wallen’s version of “Cover Me Up” went viral across all streaming platforms, and fans instantly fell in love with it. The song resonated so well with fans that the singer even premiered an intense and impactful short film about PTSD as a music video for the track. It is very easy to believe that Wallen was the originator of the song if you didn’t already know the stunning original.

  1. Luke Bryan & CB30

We have always been big fans of Luke Bryan, but seeing him collaborate with newcomers CB30, (who we are also loving) takes it to a whole new level. Their version of “Cover Me Up” is harmonies on fire. The three voices meld together exquisitely, and it’s clear that they all appreciate the beauty and intricacies of the song.   1. Rodney Atkins

One of the greatest vocalists of our time, Rodney Atkins liked “Cover Me Up” by Jason Isbell so much that he recorded his own rendition and included it on his latest record, Caught Up in the Country. Atkins make the song his own by not trying to sound like Isbell and keeping his vocals true to his aesthetic, and it worked! The video dates back to 2014, where Atkins sings the tune with his beautiful and talented wife Rose Falcon.

We wonder what other songs will make a splash with artists this year. We love seeing singers rally and give attention to such meaningful and important songs.

Sean Stemaly Drops Small Town Anthem “As Far As I Know”

Swag Spotlight Sean Stemaly is an upcoming artist signed to Big Loud Records with a few releases under his belt. He grew up in southern Indiana driving heavy machinery and teaching himself the ways of music. He relocated himself to Nashville and penned over 100 country songs for other artists that led to his deal with Big Loud Records.

“As Far As I Know” is a summertime anthem and a story of heartbreak. Co-written by Jameson Rodgers, Hunter Phelps, and Justin Wilson, it holds a conventional country feel, a small-town country heartbreak. This close to home hitter is a mid-tempo dot on the map.

He sings: “But if she takes it through the red light // And hangs right // She’s probably just headed to her mama’s // And she takes a left turn // By the big church // There’s a 50/50 chance of where she’s going // I know where one road goes // And the other I don’t // I just hope the county line is as far as she goes // ‘Cause that’s about as far as I know.”

Mentioned in a press release, “From the second my team played me “As Far As I Know,” I immediately connected with it. It’s line for line a story I had actually lived. When I was 18 living in Evansville, IN, my girlfriend at the time struggled with our small town life. Let’s just say she hung a left at the big church and I never saw her again. That’s why I knew I had to cut it – I can sing it every night at shows and tell a real story, and that’s what Country music is all about. Thank you to Hunter Phelps, Justin Wilson, and Jameson Rodgers for writing such a good, honest song and letting me bring it to life.”

The country singer + songwriter is currently working on his debut album with producer Joey Moi who has worked with Florida Georgia Line and Morgan Wallen.

What We’re Listening To: July Picks

Pick: “Good Times Roll” – Jimmie Allen feat. Nelly
Songwriters: Cornell Haynes Jr. (Nelly), Jimmie Allen, Zach Kale

This month I chose Jimmie Allen’s “Good Times Roll” featuring Nelly. The infectious song only came out a few days ago, but I have been impatiently waiting for it since back in December when Allen first teased it during his opening set on the CMT on Tour with Michael Ray in New York City.

The track has the nostalgia of old school Nelly classics like “Country Grammar”, but blends Allen’s familiar and unique vocals of today’s country music. The kind of song you just want to blast with the windows down, the two paired up have created the perfect upbeat, summer anthem that 2020 really needed right now.

Pick: “Sunday Drive” – Brett Eldredge
Songwriters: Barry Dean, Don Mescall, Steve Robson

Through first listen I fell in love with Brett Eldredge’s album this weekend but it wasn’t until Sunday afternoon driving in the car with my husband and my son in the back looking out the window that this particular title track struck a chord. The lyrics encourage the listener to focus on the small, seemingly insignificant moments for they become the most memorable in the long run.

“And we were only young but they were trying hard to reach us / How was I to know that there was something so worth keeping?”

The simple piano instrumentation with Eldredge’s smooth and clear vocals tell the story of growing up watching your parents and then as time goes by, you take your parents out on a Sunday drive, giving them the chance to reminisce about the good old days. This entire album is a masterpiece, Eldredge mixes his Sinatra big band vibes with country storytelling and it is definitely some of his best work.

Pick: “Haven’t Even Kissed Me Yet” – Aubrie Sellers

If I had to pick my favorite sub-genre of country music, it would probably be the dreamy, more indie-folk side of it. Aubrie Sellers’ latest LP, Far From Home is a captivating piece of work front to back, but it’s the solo-penned “Haven’t Even Kissed Me Yet”  that’s my favorite. Lyrically, it’s so introspective and confessional, and it’s as if Sellers is letting you into her inner dialogue. “Cause I’ve been thinkin’ of you all day long/Wonderin’ how long it will be before you’re gone/You’re already playin’ games with my head/And you haven’t even kissed me yet.” No reverb is spared in the song, and the vocals float along with the grungy, garage electric guitar, and the fuzzy kick drum that surprises you at the end. It’s truly a stunning song, perfect for a summertime drive at night.

Pick: “Come As You Are” – Tenille Townes
Songwriters: Daniel Tashian, Tenille Townes, Marc Beeson

This is such a fun song and it really stood out to me when listening to her new album. The record can be very emotional at times and definitely provokes a lot of thought with songs like “Jersey on the Wall,” and at first, I thought this song was just put on there to break up all the emotions. Upon further listens, it does that and so much more. This song is all about self-acceptance and promotes the message of ‘everyone is dealing with similar problems, so stop overthinking, let loose, enjoy yourself, and live in the moment.’ In these trying times, we all need to be reminded of this. This song is just full of good vibes.

I love Tenille Townes and was blown away by The Lemonade Stand. It takes story-telling and adds a whole new layer to it. Excluding Sam Hunt’s Southside, this my favorite album of 2020 so far. This may be a bold statement, but this might be my favorite album by a female country artist ever.

Pick: “In My Veins” – Lauren Alaina

This song by Lauren Alaina has been out for a while but I feel like it’s such a great summer jam. A lot of people went back to their hometowns to quarantine during the Covid-19 pandemic and this song talks about your roots and never forgetting where you grew up because those memories and experiences made you who you are today.

“But you don’t leave with roots that deep // No matter where you’re at It’s in my blood, it’s in my veins // The way I talk and the way I pray // If I close my eyes, I’m there right now // You can take the girl out of the country // But the country stays running in my veins // Running in my veins”

You can hear Alaina’s southern twang on this track. The Georgia native’s lyrics are relatable and something most of us have experienced.

Pick: “Then You Do” – Brett Eldredge

Brett Eldredge’s new album is full of sentimental, lyrically-beautiful tracks. It’s definitely one of his most honest and creative productions. Though, “Then You Do” seemed to be the one that instilled the most significant reaction out of me, the first time I truly listened. It was one of those moments that demand attention, leaving you blind and unaware of anything except the lyrics spewing out of the speaker, and the music that paints the background. “Then You Do,” tells a story of a relationship from the moment of meeting, and continues to narrate how it evolves and develops. And, eventually, how it ends. A song rarely covers so much ground in one song, at least not so naturally, but Eldredge and Scooter Carusoe did exactly that. And they did it well.

Pick: “Waste of Lime” – Ingrid Andress

Ever since I saw/heard “More Hearts Than Mine” on NYCS Instagram story, I was obsessed with Ingrid Andress. An exquisite lyricist, with songs that hit the heart of single 20-somethings, but really touch those of all ages, Andress lightens it a little with this beachy tune, “Waste of Lime”. With a taste of the Beach Boys’ “Kokomo” sound, you think you’re on the beach, but then she proceeds to tell the tale of another wasted drink on another unworthy mate. Her tone points to a little heartache, but really the overall mood of moving on to the next one, trying to match the carefree mindset of island time. She’s no longer wasting time on the wrong people, but she’s still considering it a waste of a lime.

 

Pick: “Why We Drink” – Justin Moore
Songwriters: Casey Beathard, David Lee Murphy, Jeremy Stover, Justin Moore

My pick is “Why We Drink” by Justin Moore. I chose this song because it’s a fun song that was needed during this quarantine summer. It’s the perfect song to put on after a long day of working from home, on a Friday night or for Sunday Funday. Cheers!

Pick: “Think About You” – Alana Springsteen ft. Filmore

I got the chance to interview talented songstress, Alana Springsteen for our Swag Spotlight feature. I already knew how extremely talented she was, but I didn’t know how humble and passionate she was for music until our conversation. In preparation for our interview, I listened to all her released music and ultimately fell in love with one above the rest. My pick this week is “Think About You” by Springsteen featuring one of my favorite rising artists, Filmore.

I am a sucker for a good duet because of that push-pull dynamic that duets often offer. This particular song is both vocally pleasing and lyrically expressive- two things I love in country music. The combination of Springsteen and Filmore is the vocal duo I never knew I needed!

I Love New York with Jimmie Allen

Our ‘I Love New York’ Series features artists in the country music community taking over our Instagram Story each week to give us the Top 5 Things they love most about New York City.

This week, singer-songwriter, Jimmie Allen, who just released his latest project: Bettie James, took over to give his Top 5 Picks in the personalized videos here on Instagram Highlights plus a rundown below.

 

#5 – Madison Square Garden

Allen kicks off his Top 5 Picks with Madison Square Garden. “While I do love the Lakers, I do appreciate the history of Madison Square Garden,” Allen says.

 

#4 – Zara

What is a trip to New York City without a little shopping spree. Allen includes Zara as his #4 pick, adding “I’ve noticed you have a lot of Zara stores and some things you have at one store and not at the other, so yes, Zara.”

 

#3 – Central Park

In the middle of the big bustling city is the quiet and serene, Central Park. Allen adds the famed location as his #3 Pick. “Central Park is somewhere I would always go just to clear my head, go for a run. I’ve actually roller-skated there before too. I fell once or twice, but yea, Central Park is great.”

 

#2 – Bubba Gump Shrimp

All New York trips have to include good eats, right? Allen adds Times Square’s Bubba Gump Shrimp as his #2 I Love New York Pick. “Every time I go to New York, I always go there,” he says.

 

#1 – Broadway

Allen’s #1 Pick for his Top 5 Things he loves about NYC in our ‘I Love New York’ Series is: Broadway. “I love musical theater. I’ve seen countless shows on Broadway and I look forward to when I can go back and see more shows again.”
