NYCS First Impression: Runaway June ‘Blue Roses’

Just nine months after the premiere of their self-titled debut EP, the talented ladies of Runaway June have finally released their debut album Blue Roses. Complete with ten brilliant tracks, the songstresses channel their heartbreaks, sassiness, vulnerability, and girl-power into an impressive compilation of songs.

The record opens up with “Head Over Heels,” a song that honestly expresses the stigma of women having a one night stand. We caught up with two of the members of the trio, Hannah and Jennifer, during Taste of Country Music Festival, where they shared that they wanted to write and sing about a subject that is not typically discussed in country music, especially from the perspective of an all girl-trio. Cleverly placed as the next song on the track list, Runaway June’s current infectious single, “Buy My Own Drinks” celebrate women empowerment and independence, post-break-up. The ladies continue their confident and sassy attitudes in “Fast As You,” another track that debuted originally on their EP. Naomi, Hannah, and Jennifer put their own twist on Dwight Yoakam’s song, reminding men that they can “break hearts too.”

On the contrary, the songstresses sing in “I Know the Way” that they “know the way to unbreak your heart.” The flirty song is a unique twist on a classic love story, featuring more uptempo instrumentals and a confident female protagonist, enticing a love interest to come to the bar downtown to dance with her.

Slowing it down a bit, the singer-songwriters harmonize on the nostalgic song “We Were Rich.” The ladies reminisce about simpler times, where finding money in a couch cushion, the old church, family time, and singing hymns meant that they had everything they could have ever wanted. Admitting in the last verse that though they’ve become more successful, they would always view those times as their ‘richest.’ “We didn’t have it all / but we all thought we did / Mama always said that we were blessed and I believed her / Never thought the grass was greener / on the other side of our old chain link fence / Yeah, we were rich.”

The women continue the theme of gratitude in their song “Good Bad & Ugly,” which depicts a healthy relationship. Naomi, Hannah, and Jennifer harmonize beautifully, as they sing the chorus, sharing “I’m a saint, I’m a sinner, I’m a train-wreck / Just about as wild as they get / but you still love me, good, bad, and ugly,” adding that they “must have done something right in another life” to be with the one they’re with.

On the opposite spectrum, Runaway June’s lament about loss and heartbreak on the record in both “I Am Too” and the title track. The former is a self-reflective ballad, picking apart the emotions and situations associated with a recent break-up, and wondering if their ex is feeling the same way. The chorus, though heartbreaking, is as relatable and raw as it gets.

The latter, “Blue Roses” is a deeply personal song that deals with loss in a unique way. Despite how personal it is, the songstresses openly sing about their vices and wanting their loved ones back on the track, which will surely resonate with fans everywhere, and make naysayers stop to listen and appreciate the talented trio that are Runaway June.

Runaway June delivered a well-balanced debut album that will surely garner them praise and many more fans. We cannot wait to see what is next to come for the girl group, and look forward to their future success. Top 5 Rising Artists You Can’t Miss at Taste of Country Festival

New York’s Taste of Country Festival at Hunter Mountain is one of our favorite events of the year! NYCountry Swag will be setting up shop at the festival for the third year in a row. We can’t wait to see you all at our booth!

As always, the festival is armed with some heavy hitters, including superstar Keith Urban and the iconic Brooks & Dunn; however, it’s the impressive list of up and coming country artists that we are most excited for.

Take a look below at five rising artists that you can’t miss!

1. Morgan Wallen
The Big Loud Records recording artist was recently added to the TOC lineup, but his Sunday afternoon set is one you won’t want to miss! Wallen recently headlined a sold-out tour, achieved his first number one single with “Up Down,” and his newest single, “Whiskey Glasses” just hit the number one spot. Back in 2017, before his massive success and before the infamous mullet, we had the chance to interview the singer-songwriter. During that conversation, our Managing Editor, Christina predicted that “Up, Down” would go number one, and sure enough she was right!

2. Runaway June
The ladies of Runaway June are another act to look out for at Taste of Country! Their self-titled debut EP landed them a spot on the road as a supporting act for Carrie Underwood on her ‘Cry Pretty Tour 360.’ Last summer, we caught up with the sassy and talented trio just before its release, where we previewed their song “Wild Wild West” and their hit, “Buy My Own Drinks” in one of our Swag Sessions. Make sure to catch their set on Friday afternoon- it’s sure to be a good time!

3. Tyler Rich
On Saturday afternoon, you don’t want to miss Tyler Rich’s set! Last year in May, we had a chance to chat with the singer about plans for more music, his radio single, “The Difference,” and his first time on the TODAY show. Flash forward a year later, he has toured with Brett Young, released more music, most recently “Leave Her Wild,” and of course, garnered fans across the country.

4. Adam Doleac
Possibly the least known on our list of rising country artists that are a must see at the Taste of Country Festival, Adam Doleac is someone to add to your list! Opening up the performances on Sunday afternoon, the singer-songwriter has been one of our favorites since 2017, when he released his self-titled debut EP. During his first time in New York City, we hosted a Swag Session with Doleac, where he sang a few songs, including “Whiskey’s Fine.” Currently, the singer has a killer hit, “Famous,” that he is sure to sing as part of his must-see set at the festival!

5. Walker Hayes
Rounding out our list of rising artists you can’t miss at Taste of Country Festival is one of our favorites, Walker Hayes! Armed with a fun personality and catchy songs, Hayes is an artist who delivers on stage. The singer-songwriter will most likely sing hits, “You Broke Up With Me” and “90’s Country;” the former he sang for New York Country Swag, during a Swag Session, before a show in NYC. Make sure to head to his set on Friday Night!

The Ladies of Runaway June Release Video for “Buy My Own Drinks”

Our June Swag Session Alumni, the ladies from Runaway June recently released a music video for their sassy single, “Buy My Own Drinks.” The trio is making waves in the country music scene this year with an ACM nomination for New Vocal Group of the Year, as well as, making their national TV debut on NBC’s Today Show.

The girls are proving that they’re ones to watch, as they continue the momentum with their new music video. The infectious song promotes women empowerment, as do the visuals. The colorful and confident video showcases group solidarity, as well as, independence. Each woman participates in their own tasks, such as washing their dog, writing and playing guitar, and painting, while mini-mes of each woman reflect the same tasks and mood. According to Runaway June songstress, Naomi Cook, “’The ‘Little Junes’ were the perfect way to capture that carefree feeling of returning to your inner child and getting a little wild. In doin’, that we find true liberation.”

The song was co-written by Runway June’s Naomi Cooke, Hannah Mulholland, and Jennifer Wayne with songwriters, Hillary Lindsey, and Josh Kear. The bop is truly an anthem for girls and women of all ages. The powerhouse group of ladies will lend their vocals as openers on Carrie Underwood’s ‘The Cry Pretty Tour 360,’ this fall, accompanied by fellow female country duo Maddie and Tae. The Ladies of Runaway June Make Their Morning TV Debut on TODAY

Earlier this morning, ACM nominated New Vocal Group of the Year, Runaway June, made their morning-television debut on NBC’s Today Show. They took the stage during the 10 am hour with co-anchors, Kathie Lee and Hoda, performing their latest single, “Buy My Own Drinks,” off their recently released self-titled EP. Watch the full interview and performance here.

Before performing their catchy girl-power anthem, Kathie Lee and Hoda, came to the stage with special guest Martina McBride to introduce and talk to the lovely ladies, Naomi Cooke, Hannah Mulholland, and Jennifer Wayne. When chatting to the group, Kathie Lee mentioned, “They’re the first all-female trio in over a decade to earn two top 40 hits!” With Hoda continuing by saying, “We’re so excited y’all are here with us, you guys are opening for Carrie Underwood when she goes on tour after the baby, along with Maddie and Tae…Are you pinching yourself?” The trio replying, “Yes, every moment, it’s bananas, it’s crazy!” Making the moment even cooler was having McBride standing beside them, a woman who has paved the way in this genre.

After the quick interview, the time came for the powerhouse group of ladies to take the stage, singing an anthem we all needed. The ladies brought energy to their performance, showing off their incredible talent with such confidence. The trio harmonized beautifully, as they sang their lyrics, captivating their audience at home all while leaving them empowered. At the end of the song, Kathie Lee, Hoda, and McBride came back on stage cheering the girls on and saying, “We love them!” New Yorkers, can catch Runaway June on the ‘The Cry Pretty Tour 360’ with Carrie Underwood and Maddie and Tae at the iconic Madison Square Garden on October 2nd, 2019.

Runaway June Performs On Halloween at Nash FM 94.7’s Stage 17

It was a happy-and hilarious-Halloween last night (October 31) as Runway June took the Hackensack Meridian Health Stage 17 at Nash FM 94.7 dressed in costume as another country trio: Midland. The Nash FM 94.7 team was also in the holiday spirit with Jesse Addy, a Dalmatian, and Katie Neal, Cruella De Ville, introducing the first all-female trio in over a decade to have a top 25 hit (“Lipstick”).

Donning mustaches and hats reminiscent of Midland, Naomi Cooke as Jess, Hannah Mulholland as Cam and Jennifer Wayne as Mark took to the stage in front of an intimate group of fans. After the first song, Naomi and Jennifer shed their faux mustaches which were interfering with being able to sing. Hannah, however, stuck with hers, saying “it feels horrible, but I’m going to commit to the mustache” with a laugh.

Next, Naomi told the group “you might know this one” as they went into a cover of Keith Urban’s “Love Somebody Like You”. Following the song, she explained the trio was “In four states in one day” the prior day, using that to introduce their latest hit on country radio “Wild West”. Fun fact: Jennifer is the granddaughter of Hollywood Western legend John Wayne. Fans were treated to an amazing live rendition of the bluegrass-tinged single, which earned them an ACM 2018 nomination for new vocal duo or group of the year.

As the trio launched into their hit freedom anthem “Buy My Own Drinks”, Naomi took notice of the one fan, a woman named Tracey, that had been dancing solo from the start of the show, bringing her up on stage. Tracey later told us she first heard the group/song three weeks ago while visiting her daughter in New Hampshire and it struck a chord with her as her husband passed away six years ago. After that, the ladies launched into their take on Eric Paslay’s “She Don’t Love You” which was co-written by Jennifer. Finally, the trio performed a lively, sing-along worthy version of “Lipstick”, the perfect close to a spirited night. Watch the full live video below.

Where Are They Now? Our 2017 Artists to Watch Update

Here at New York Country Swag, we pride ourselves on being tastemakers, finding and championing new and up-and-coming artists and introducing our followers to the best of the best of the rising acts. Back in 2017, we named the 10 artists below in our “Artists to Watch in 2017” and we are proud to say, we know rising talent before they make it big. Check out what each of these artists has done over the past two years and what is coming up for them in 2019.

10. Seth Ennis – In 2017, Ennis released his debut EP, Mabelle, which featured his first single “Woke Up In Nashville” which put him on our radar early on. Most recently he released a heartfelt song “Call Your Mama” which features Little Big Town and has garnered over a million streams on Spotify. The singer-songwriter joins Dylan Scott on tour which hits Gramercy Theatre on January 17th. Grab your tickets here.

9. Trent Harmon – Harmon spent 2017 writing and working on his debut album, You Got Em All. The American Idol winner of season 15 set out to prove to his fans and critics that he wasn’t just a competition winner that could sing covers but that he had something important to say with his songwriting. We caught Harmon back in February in Nashville as he performed his single “You Got Em All” for radio programmers and the audience was blown away by his delivery of the breakup song. He told New York Country Swag during a recent interview: “I had one job that day and that was to solidify myself a slot for the next year as a relevant up-and-coming artist in the country format,” which he certainly did. We can’t wait to see what he has in store for fans in 2019.

8. High Valley – This Canadian duo since making our Artist to Watch list has toured the country on the Sirius XM The Highway Finds Tour and released brand new music, The Farmhouse Sessions which was recorded appropriately on a farm outside of Nashville. When we caught their infectious, high energy set a little over a year ago, the brothers, led the audience in a dance off and played their top 15 hit “She’s With Me” which elicited a crowd singalong. The duo has tour dates booked through the new year, playing shows in the U.S as well as Canada. For all of the tour dates head to their website.

7. Runaway June – The ladies of Runaway June are at such an exciting time in their career. The week that New York Country Swag hosted them for a Live Swag Session, they had just announced they would be joining Carrie Underwood and Maddie and Tae on her Cry Pretty 360 Tour. Since then they have also released their debut self-titled EP and their single “Buy My Own Drinks” is garnering plenty of spins on Spotify. 6. Brett Young – Arguably the artist who has made it the biggest over the past two years, Young released his debut, self-titled album in February of 2017 and since then has had four no. 1 hits including “Sleep Without You,” “In Case You Didn’t Know,” “Like I Loved You”, and “Mercy.” His brand new single from his forthcoming album, “Here Tonight” is already Top 40 on the Country Radio Charts and steadily climbing. Young is coming to New York City on December 9th with Tyler Rich and drops his sophomore album, Ticket to L.A just two days prior.

5. Ryan Hurd – We highlighted Hurd’s incredible songwriting career back in 2017 however since then he has written and recorded songs for himself that have proved he isn’t just a songwriter anymore. Recently he released two songs, “Diamonds or Twine” and “To A T” which were both inspired by another huge milestone Hurd has accomplished since 2017, he got married. Marrying fellow singer-songwriter and chart-topper Maren Morris earlier this year has given Hurd the opportunity to write about his love for her and when he sings those songs, his delivery and devotion is evident. We are hoping for a full-length album in 2019 and will keep you posted about future tour dates heading our way.

4. Russell Dickerson – We are proud to champion the very first artist that New York Country Swag ever featured at our very first event back in January of 2016 just a few weeks after our launch! Dickerson played on top of a bar at Libation, a New York City nightclub, the event was sold out long before he had signed his record deal with Triple Tigers. Since previewing his music for 300 of our lucky followers and a handful of NYCS events later, Dickerson has garnered not one but two no. 1 songs on the Country Radio Charts. His love song for his wife, “Yours”, made it to the top of the charts and appropriately was the title of his debut album which was released this time last year. Most recently, his second single to radio “Blue Tacoma” took the top spot. He toured all summer with Lady Antebellum and Darius Rucker, increasing his fanbase. Looking to the new year, Dickerson is working on new music and will hopefully get back on the road. Take a look back at our Country Night with the rising superstar from September 2016 below.

3. Walker Hayes – In January of 2017 when our list was published, Hayes had only released his 8Tracks Vol. 1 and 2 to his fans, a unique take on the storytelling country music is so accustomed to. Over the past two years, the lines of genres have blended, country music has sonically changed and become more fluid and no artist has benefitted more than Hayes. His blend of hip-hop, R&B and pop all infuse with country lyrics and have created a sound that is undeniable all his own. We hosted Hayes earlier this year for a Live Swag Session after he released his major label debut album boom. and garnered plenty of success with his debut radio single “You Broke Up With Me”. He just released a new single, “90’s Country” which name-drops 22 different 90’s country songs that Hayes tells us in a recent interview, influenced him growing up and is the first of new music we can look forward to in the new year. 2. Luke Combs – Another artist who had huge success since 2017, Combs released not only a debut album but a deluxe version with five additional songs. The album entered the Billboard charts 73 weeks ago and continually makes its way back to the top of the charts, including this week where he holds the top spot for not only album but also the top song with “She Got The Best of Me” at no. 1 for the second week in a row. This marks the fourth chart-topper for Combs, previously he landed the top spot with “Hurricane,” “When It Rains It Pours,” and “One Number Away”. He joined Jason Aldean this summer on his High Noon Neon Tour which made its way to Madison Square Garden in August. The sold-out crowd knew every word to each of his songs, even the deep album cuts proving that the country crooner has grown his fan base so wide and is here to stay.

1. Drake White – White’s ability to captivate a crowd during his live performances landed him an opening spot on Zac Brown Band’s tour and at festivals across the country. He just released five new songs in an EP titled Pieces which highlights his signature groove and sultry vocals. Next year he is heading overseas to play the C2C Country to Country Festival in Glasgow along with Chris Stapleton, Keith Urban, and Lady Antebellum.

Karen Fairchild Calls Attention to Rising Female Artists

Wednesday night, CMT did their part in changing the conversation about women being played in country music and the lack thereof. While the night specifically honored Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Kelsea Ballerini, Carrie Underwood and the ladies of Little Big Town, Karen Fairchild, and Kimberly Schlapman, Fairchild used her platform during her acceptance speech to acknowledge something that we already knew at New York Country Swag, there is a TON of incredible female artists out there.

We have worked with several of the artists that Fairchild named including Jillian Jacqueline, Abby Anderson, Tenille Townes, Runaway June, and Natalie Stovall. Below is a playlist of our favorite songs from all 35 of the rising female artists that were named during that epic moment which you can check out here as well as some other amazing females that you should be listening to.

2018 CMT Artists of the Year – An Epic Night of Women in Country Music

Wednesday evening (Oct 17.), in Nashville at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, CMT’s 2018 Artists of the Year ceremony honored women of country, including Kelsea Ballerini, Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Carrie Underwood, Hillary Scott, Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman, and for Country Artist of a Lifetime Award to Loretta Lynn. It was the perfect step towards changing the conversation to an action of supporting women in country music.

The night started off with Miranda Lambert and her band the Pistol Annies singing their new cut “Sugar Daddy,” which is on their on their upcoming record Interstate Gospel. Lambert voiced her opinion on supporting women in the industry and how we always have to be there for each other.

Kelsea Ballerini joined Alison Krauss to perform a beautiful rendition of Krauss’ classic, “Ghost In This House” and then accepted her award from Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott.

“One of the greatest gifts that have been given to me as a new artist on this short journey that I’ve been on so far is having people that I grew up listening to and that I’ve learned from, turn around and reach out their hand to me,” Ballerini said. “They’ve shared their stage with me and shared their platform with me and I think what I’ve learned from that is to lift each other up, to support each other, and to share our stage no matter how big or small it is.”

Maren Morris brought sass and R&B into her performance, where she joined Brandi Carlile on stage to put their own spin on Aretha Franklin’s soulful hit “Natural Woman” in tribute to the legend who passed away earlier this year. Accepting her award from Sheryl Crow, Morris voiced on how thankful she was that CMT was shining the light on the lack of female representation and putting this night together. She also said how she feels that the females in this room are putting out the most compelling and emotional music right now.

Hillary Scott performed with pop star Tori Kelly and gospel singer Kirk Franklin with an inspiring showing of Lady Antebellum’s hit “American Honey,” Kelly’s new single “Never Alone,” and Franklin’s track “Oh Happy Day.” Following Scott, Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman and Karen Fairchild performed with the soulful legend Gladys Knight for a mashup of “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” which brought chills and a standing ovation through the Symphony Center.

A standout moment was when Fairchild humbly included 35 up-and-coming women artists to look out for and support through their new projects in her speech including our past Swag Spotlights, Jillian Jacqueline, Abby Anderson, Tenille Townes, Runaway June, and Natalie Stovall. Sadly, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Loretta Lynn wasn’t able to attend the ceremony to accept her award but her lifetime friend and actress Sissy Spacek was happy and tearful accepting the award on her behalf. Spacek seemed overwhelmingly thrilled and proud to talk about her dear friend and their everlasting friendship.

Lastly, Carrie Underwood brought out her opening acts for her 2019 Cry Pretty 360 Tour, Maddie & Tae, and Runaway June. Underwood began her performance with an acapella version of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by Your Man,” and then Maddie & Tae joined in with “Rockin’ with the Rhythm,” by the Judds. Underwood then continued with a rousing rendition of Martina McBride’s “Independence Day” giving everyone a blast from the past. Runaway June added their touch with singing “Wild One” by Faith Hill. The artists then ended with a powerful performance of Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and harmonizing on Underwood’s single “Cry Pretty.”

CMT gave everyone a taste of what’s to come for females in country music. It was the perfect opportunity to show everyone that the future is female and female artists aren’t going anywhere but up from here.

NYCS First Impression: Runaway June Debut EP

The rising trio Runaway June, which includes the beautiful and talented ladies Naomi, Hannah, and Jennifer, have given fans exactly what they have been waiting for. Today they dropped their self-titled EP and it can be downloaded and listened to everywhere music is available. The group has been working on this project for two years with well-known producer Dann Huff. In a press release about the EP, Jennifer said that Dann Huff has changed their lives, while Hannah said it best with “The EP is a really fun and diverse look into our sound as a band. It incorporates the fun of the live show, but also shows some soft moments that fans can relate to.”

The EP consists of 5 songs, “Buy My Own Drinks”, “I Am Too”, “Got Me Where I Want You”, “Wild West” and their own spunky version of Dwight Yoakam’s “Fast As You”. The trio gave fans a taste of their EP last month when they released “Buy My Own Drinks” which was written by the ladies themselves alongside songwriters Hillary Lindsey and Josh Kear. Fans love that single and will love the rest of the songs on the EP.

The collection of songs feature their spectacular harmonies on lyrics that touch on heartbreak, finding the perfect love and being badass, empowering women. This being their debut release on Wheelhouse Records, the project proves that the chicks of Runaway June are primed for stardom.

Last month Runaway June joined us for a Swag Session where they performed “Wild West” and “Buy My Own Drinks.” They talked to us about their exciting plans for next year. They will be joining Maddie and Tae on Carrie Underwood’s Cry Pretty 360 Tour. You will not want to miss the trio when the tour hits NYC next year, so make sure to grab your tickets here.
