The Beginning:

This week we shine our spotlight on an artist who has been on our radar for a while, Meghan Patrick. Patrick is a creative powerhouse and a force to be reckoned with in the industry. We chatted with the singer-songwriter about her unique journey and of course, her brand new album, Golden Child.

“I was born and raised in Bowmanville, Ontario. I definitely grew up in a very musical house,” began the songstress. “My dad played some guitar and we always had music playing in the house […] When I was about twelve years old, I auditioned for the school musical and that was kind of when I figured out I could sing.” The singer recalls her teacher recommended a vocal teacher for her, which catapulted into taking lessons.“I’m actually classically trained. […] I did that all through high school,” shared the singer. Adding, “I honestly grew up on a pretty eclectic taste in music. I loved all genres and I just really loved music and came from a family that loved all kinds of music.”

At the same time that Patrick was honing her talent as a singer, her focus was on competitive snowboarding. “In my senior year of high school, my goal was to get on the national development team and eventually go to the olympics. My parents really wanted me to go to university after high school, but I wanted to keep snowboarding, so they made me a deal. They said “if you make the national development team, we’re cool with you deferring school.”

Unfortunately, the singer ended up getting severely injured causing to walk away from snowboarding. Music became her fallback plan, and she went on to study opera at a college in Canada. “One year of that made it very clear to me that, that was not the path for me. I loved the singing aspect of it, but I wasn’t really passionate about the genre of opera,” shared the singer, who decided to try snowboarding again. Unfortunately, another concussion halted those dreams yet again.

The Turning Point:

Despite her snowboarding career coming to end, music remained a constant in Patrick’s life. She ended up switching into the Jazz program at her college, which landed her in a 10 piece soul band. “Outside of my first ever band when I was thirteen, that was the first time I ever got to experience touring and playing some big shows. That’s when I started realizing that this is what I wanted to do.”

Then, Patrick transferred to a school in Ontario, where her dreams began to take shape. “I ended up meeting some musicians from my hometown, and we started a bluegrass band. We made a couple of records and did a bunch of touring and that was the final tour for me. I knew this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” The singer decided to quit school and focus on music full-time.

While performing with her bluegrass band, Patrick gained an even bigger appreciation for country music, falling in love with new artists at the time like Eric Church. “When I went my separate ways with the band and started writing songs by myself, they were country songs. That’s what kind of seemed to naturally come out of me,” she shared.

Her hard work, busking, working odd jobs, and continuously grinding in music led her to her first Canadian record deal. “After I signed with Warner, I had wanted to move to Nashville then but I decided to spend a couple of years in Canada and build up my career there. I didn’t have an offer on the table from a U.S. record label at the time, I just wanted to be able to tour and get music out, so that’s what I did.”

Patrick earned many accolades in Canada, but ultimately felt the pull to move to Nashville, so the fall of 2019 she followed that urge. Unfortunately, the pandemic halted her progress and she was eventually dropped from her record label in Canada, due to restructuring. Instead of letting that stop her, the songstress took it as an opportunity to drop deeper into herself as an artist and as a person, intuitionally creating music that felt distinctly her.

Today:

Flash forward to today, that intentionality Patrick had in 2020 led to her American record deal, as well as, her latest project, Golden Child. “‘Golden Child’ was the catalyst for everything that happened after that where I made myself a promise that I would write songs that I wanted to write and I would be unapologetically myself. […] That’s when I started writing a lot of songs that ended up on this record,” she shared. Adding, “It’s autobiographically. Some parts are really heavy. I think the underlying theme of it is more so focused around the journey of healing and empowerment and self-love.”

For Patrick, this record is the biggest and most honest project of her career. “It feels like I’ve been trying to write this record my whole life, and I kind of have been, because it’s all of my heart and all of my happiness, my relationship with my husband, and the journey of that, and all the stuff that came before it. At the end of the day, I always write these songs with hopes that people will find some of their selves in them or relate to them or it will be empowering or healing for them.”

While all the songs off the album are incredible, the title track stands out, as an important turning point for the songstress. “Joey Hyde and Aaron Eshius, who were the co-writers and producers on the track, when I told them I wanted to name the record that, they said we need to write that. It was rooted in me deciding I wanted to tell my real story and show people who I truly was for what felt like the first time in my life. […] Getting to a place where I finally felt I could be myself and totally honest was important.”

Meghan Patrick is the real deal. Stay tuned for what she does next!

Meghan Patrick Shares New Song “Golden Child” Out Now

Meghan Patrick shares new song “Golden Child,” out now, September 6th, on all streaming platforms. Listen to the brand new track below.

Up and coming country artist, Meghan Patrick has been working hard, honing her talent as a singer and a songwriter in the competitive music scene. While she has always been impressive, it feels like she may be on the rise as she gains more traction and grows her fanbase. Patrick’s brand new song, “Golden Child,” out today is one of her best songs to date.

Written by Patrick with Joey Hyde and Aaron Eshuis, “Golden Child” is a reflective and introspective song. Patrick seemingly wrote a song to her younger self, giving advice and reflecting on what she would tell herself now. Throughout the song, the songstress encourages her younger self to keep her real friends close, ignore the shiny things in favor of the forever things, and to nurse her heartache because the love of her life will be worth it.

“But I’d tell her while you’re reaching for the stars // Just be careful wha you wish for honey // You never know it might come true // Don’t be tempted by the easy money // It might cost more than you’re willing to lose // The same thing that takes the edge off // It can take the shine off after a while // So wear your diamonds on the inside // ‘Cause everything that glitters ain’t golden, child”

“Golden Child” is a song for anyone who needs it. Patrick shares her heart and her talent with this incredible new song.

5 Unreleased Cuts From Instagram That We Are Loving

Maybe it’s just us, but it seems that it is now trendy for country artists to give fans a taste of what’s to come via Instagram. We are noticing that so many singer-songwriters are previewing unreleased materials and even demos to fans via their social media, just to keep fans excited.

Whatever the reason, we are absolutely loving it! We shared some of our favorites last year, here and here, and now we’re sharing some of our new faves from the past few weeks.

1. “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old”- Luke Combs

One of our saving graces during this past year, Luke Combs continues to be a man that is all about the fans! Recently, he posted a video of himself singing a new unreleased tune that could easily fit into his latest project. “Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old” is a must record!

2. “Mama Prayed For”- Meghan Patrick

One of the most unique picks on our list, Meghan Patrick’s unreleased song “Mama Prayed For” is a masterpiece in the making. The Canadian country star is on the brink of success here in the states. It is only a matter of time! This particular song features her insane vocal range, her unique songwriting, and her ability to relate through her music.

3. “No Hard Feelings”- Old Dominion

Honestly, Old Dominion can do no wrong in our eyes. “No Hard Feelings” has already got fans asking when it is going to be released. Clearly, in the songwriting mode, the men of Old Dominion are cranking out demo after demo this year, and we are here for it! This unreleased jam will be a perfect addition to their setlist.

4. “Perfect Imperfections”- Tucker Beathard

Tucker Beathard has been quietly doing his thing on social media all quarantine long. He is not one to fight for attention, continuously proving that he is an artist above all else. Although there were a few unreleased tracks to choose from, “Perfect Imperfections” captured our hearts. The mellow and emotional tune is all about love and recognizing all the details about your partner. Swoon-worthy for sure!

5. Untitled- Madison Kozak

Madison Kozak is one of our favorite singer-songwriters on the scene right now. Her voice is strong, yet ethereal, but it is her ability to craft a lyric that gets us every time. She has been having a lot of fun sharing her writes and demos on social media, but this untitled song is tugging at our heartstrings the most.

Keep up with NY Country Swag, as we will be sure to let you know ASAP, if any of these songs are released! Fans can join our Weekly Round-Up e-newsletter here, for the latest in country music and more news about future releases.

NYCS First Impression: Meghan Patrick ‘Wild as Me’

Meghan Patrick Wild as Me

Canadian country music singer-songwriter Meghan Patrick is a girl boss humbly blessing country music amidst the likes of Ashley McBryde and Kacey Musgraves. Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, and later settling in the music scene in Nashville, the two-time CCMA Female Vocalist of the Year is sustaining her coast to coast journey and making a prominent introduction in American country music with her new EP, Wild as Me, following her previous releases Country Music Made Me Do It and Grace & Grit.

“Girls Like Me” mightily kicks off the musical assemblage with the allure of feminine individualities and the attractiveness of male qualities, promulgating what works for “girls like her.” These include tattoos and a working man persona. This prompts the second track, “Things I Shouldn’t Say;” a sensual, slow-talking, rhythmically ballad, begging you to hold the one that you love close. Perhaps not the most appropriate for the younger ears but the strongest love ballad in the mix.

“Wild as Me,” the EP’s title track, unveils a softer side of the singer-songwriter, musically and emotionally, but powerfully delivers a love story singing: “Baby, you’re wild as me / My once in a lifetime made of the same kind of crazy / I want every sunset, and every sunrise / When you hold me tight, it sets me free / I thank God I found somebody / Wild as me.”

Closer, “Chaser” insinuates a late-night bar karaoke, feel good love story. Not minding taking the position of a rebound love interest for the night, the track written by Patrick with Joey Hyde and Dan Isbell relays a care free situation. “I’ll be your chaser, something sweet, get your mind off her and on to me / the eraser of memories, and you get your lips where they want to be, right on mine cause boy it’s time to send that her on down the line / I’ll be your chaser, yeah I’ll be your chaser, so take a shot on me”.

Patrick will be hitting the road in 2020 opening for Old Dominion’s “We Are Old Dominion” tour across Canada alongside fellow country music singer-songwriter and beau, Mitchell Tenpenny.
